Week 345 / Sheltering in Place
I mean, I think it’s 345. Honestly, I have lost all sense of time and believe I could be off by a week. Let’s just say I’ve survived March and April began at some point recently and I’m still inside my house.
I don’t have anything exciting to report – just after my last week notes, SF declared “shelter in place” for 3 weeks and the State followed suit. SF extended shelter in place until May 3rd for now, but who knows, I am expecting it to extend again. I do gather from the data (from people who tweet that data) that us all being cooped up has flattened our local curve, so that’s nice to know.
I’ve been filling the weeks with nothing particularly extraordinary. A little work here and there, but not enough to really force a proper routine – so I’ll be honest that I’ve not been setting morning alarms most days and that’s meant I’ve been up out of bed late, and therefore going to sleep late. I’ve not really been sleeping well and I’ve been on the melatonin, with mixed results and crazy dreams. I’m a bit untethered, but that’s the worst of it.
Here’s some things that I’ve been consuming, though:
Animal Crossing New Horizons! Thank goodness this little slice of escapism came out when it did. It’s been so lovely to visit real friends’ houses, both near and far, even if it’s just to wave and steal a few peaches.
Oculus Quest! The only way I’ve been getting any sort of real exercise (other than fitness boxing which I’m starting to get quite bored of) is playing Beat Saber for about an hour a day until I sweat enough that the lenses fog up. Gross, but quite gratifying.
Podcasts! I had subscribed to a bunch of interesting science podcasts at the start of the year, but I had to ditch them all because they all just talk about COVID-19 at the moment. Instead, I’ve been listing to radio plays. For example, I like NoSleep for short horror stories that feel very Twilight Zone/Tales from the Crypt. Also enjoyed Body Horror from Radio 4 and Blackout (it’s got Rami Malek in it).
Tiger King!
Books! Still working through The Expanse novels. I’m just now caught up with the TV show, so doing well. There’s so much.
Cooking! Like, not good cooking, but not ordering take away constantly. I have a pretty decent end-of-the-world pantry and I sort of enjoy trying to use up what we have. Honestly, though, our local fancy corner store has everything except bread so we’re FINE.
Art! Well, not consuming, but outputting. Finished one not-great watercolour and did an illustration for a game that Monica is making.
I don’t have anything else to inform anyone. I’m worried sometimes and I’m pretty sure I’m constantly low-key stressed, but who isn’t?

@alaricathecat sent an ask
You’re such an amazing artist! I’m sorry if you got this question 100x times already, but what media do you use to paint your pictures? I’ve been looking for a new media type, and it looks absolutely fun (and perhaps really difficult?) to use, but I’m nothing but stubborn if I do say so myself. Lmfao. Anyway, your art is stunning, I wish I could have art class with you, because I believe I could learn a lot from you
First of all: Thank you
I’m guessing you are talking about the most common style I’m using right now?Easiest way is to show, I guess, so I documented the process of my last drawing ^^ I’ll go into detail under the cut! (there should alsobe miscellanious things under the tag #how I art)
Basically, it’s bottled ink with a few touch ups. Everything but the glass of water is in the first image (coffee, very important, and KEEP IT ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF YOUR WATER to minimise risks of inking up your coffee!!), including the sketches I did of orcas in preparation for this piece. Always find ways to nag yourself into some sketch studies whenever you manage! I hadn’t drawn orcas before, so I just set a timer to 40 minutes and drew a few of the first images that came up when googling.
I use mechanical pencil for the sketch, a 2B 0.7 lead, which I get excess lead off of with a kneaded eraser. This help not to clog the tips of pens or brushes with all that excess, and the ink go on the paper not on top of the graphite. I rough line it with a thin waterproof ink pen (today that ended up being a 02 micron) and then use the kneaded eraser to remove the rest of the sketch. The kneaded eraser is worth gold! Get a good brand one, though, because there are some really crappy out there, and the brand ones I find don’t generally cost more in any case. They are supposed to be really soft and possible to drag out loooong very easily and quite fast. You might get stuck stretching it over and over and over and over- yeah.
Then I move on to the ink, and watercolours or gouache depending on what’s closest when I’m about to sit down. The brushes are the only thing I’ve bothered to get hold of high quality ones. I splurged with birthday money, and I’m weak they were so good! A single decent one that hold liquid well and don’t let go of it in great blobs was fine for quite a while, though.
Here come the trouble with my technique though, because what I use for paper is printer paper x’D Not the cheapest one, but step above, xerox big pack for colour print. The surface hold up surprisingly well, and I have also used it for markers as it doesn’t bleed through very fast. If can’t handle liquids well at all, though x’D Bubbling, people! The trick is, as little water as possible and let layers dry inbetween. A bit fiddly, but lower the cost a lot for these not high class artwork pieces. (also a lot of the low cost, but still far more expensive, watercolour papers actually handle water worse than these printer papers, sooo
The ink is thinned out with water, a can lid work excellently as colour cups! A dip into the ink, put it in the lid and add a some droplets of water. I use a clean moist brush, but let excess water bleed out from the brush onto toilet paper, then bring in the amount of watered down ink I want and apply. My different brushes need different ratios of water and ink in them to let go of the same amount of liquid and colour, so learn your brushes! The more expensive brushes are able to let go of practically all ink and practically none is wasted in the water glass, while the cheap brushes always have quite a bit of ink left in them despite not really letting go of more to the paper.
Then it’s layering time. But not too heavy layering, as the ink I use reactivate again. Making sure not to work the surface much, as it too easily crumbles. Oh. And getting distracted by how pretty ink in water is. Maybe dip the brush an extra time just to see the pretty swirls~
First few layers are all over, not that much confined to inside the lines. Help to create more depth and movement in the end. I try to shade the lighter areas first, as the darker colours will bleed when layering over them. The very darkest clear edges last, on perfectly dry paper, to ensure clean contrast lines.
The shading from dark to light, I make sure to have a dipping of water sucked up high up in the brush, then relatively dark ink. When you then go from dark to light, you’ll get less and less colour. The smoother a shade you want, the more important it is to work wet and not risk the paper suck up colour and end up with sharp edges where you don’t want them. Usually with liquids, you apply water first, then add in the colour in the wet area, but you can only do that with good (expeeeeensive) watercolour paper. So, here you have to work fast and confidently.
Or. You know. Get shades in ways you hadn’t planned, and either just make it all lots darker, or pretend it’s all fine. That’s a skill to learn, too! Very important one x’D
I use maybe… 2-5 dips into the ink in total for these pieces, so a bottle of ink really isn’t very expensive compared to what I get out of it.
When I’m happy with the ink, I add in touches of colour. Still with little water, and it will mix in with the ink. Gouache you can layer on top better, but I’m just accenting a bit, so solstice blue it was x3
Then we have the white el tip pen. That I have to stop myself from overusing completely x’D Outlining things like the weapon and dividing line between body and furthest fin to stand out more, added in on the eyes that was a tad bit too dark and adding shinies to body and such.
Lastly I go over with a ink pen again, or possible my smallest brush if I can be bothered, to just touch everything up.
And that’s it. With disturbances and cats and kiddo and all, it took about 1.5 h, preparations and digital after work (adjusting what the scanner killed, and tiny adjustments here and there, made his right pupil smaller as it was too big, for example) excluded.
I really like working the ink and the brushes. It got such life and soul, the medium give it’s own twist on what you try to make. I did get a grip on the ink thanks to inktober, where I at least 2/3 worked with the bottled ink to prompts, so that the point became making something with ink rather than forgetting your medium in favour for motif. Sketching and exercises and time limits, those are what have made me take the biggest steps in art. Making truly elaborate pieces have been about having a bit fun with the skills you have, but the journey of growing as an artist isn’t about those anymore for me. It’s surprisingly freeing, and the day you discover hard work on sketch exercises make you suddenly able to sketch a wide variety of things just like that? It’s complete awe ^^

Let me be a Part of your Heart
Ravioliweek 2017
Day 3 - Role Swap (Halloweenies included)
_______________________
Sherrow came flying franticly throught the window, pulling Links costume with such a force, he thought he was gonna fall. This could only mean that Ravio had returned hurt. Again.
That boy was such a lousy hero… No, he couldn’t think like that. Ravio was trying his best, even if his best meant he came home full of cuts and bruises. He was doing a better job than Link ever did, he just need a lot more training… that’s what he needs.
Sherrow lead the way through the swamp palace, to the rocks that would lead to misery mire.
The boy was intelligent, strong minded, and kinder than Link ever was. He had accepted him immediately when he discovered his true identity. If it was inversed… he actually didn’t really know how it would’ve played out.
Sherrow abruptly stopped next to a rock.
- Ravio, are you there? – he heard a few grunts coming from its direction. He could see his face, a bright smile in his direction. His leg was stuck between two rocks, it seemed they were exercising force on it. – Can you use your gloves?... Are you okay?
- I’m fine Mr. Hero, it’s just my leg. I don’t think I’ll be able to walk for a while… I tried using the power gloves, but I can’t do nothing from this position.
- Give them to me. – He took them and started instructing him - Okay, can you hold the smaller one? Good, now on my count to three, we pushed them off. 1… 2… 3! – With a few grunts they managed to take the rocks of him and Link leaned in to inspect his leg. – Can you move it?
- Not without pain. We better get to the witch, the one living with the fortune teller. She may have a potion that’ll make it heal faster.
Link picked him up. – Do you have any idea how long it takes to heal a broken leg?
-Too much, that’s for sure. – He took a glance at Link. – Can you make me soup after we get home please? I’m starving! I saved a sage this time!
Before Link could answer, Ravio saw the posters spread on the walls of the palace. – Link! Today is Hallows Eve!
-What? Hallows Eve?
-Yeah, the night of the spirits. We dress like monsters and other scary creatures and stroll around town to scare the evil spirits. There’s a fair every year full of the best pastries! We have to go!
-We? I’m not dressing has the enemy! Besides, I’m not sure you’re good to walk anyway.
- Fairies can do wonders Mr. Hero. You can keep the bunny costume you always wear.
- Sure, whatever you say. We aren’t going.
__________
Of course they went. It wasn’t even a question.
The witch had a few potions and fairies around. Of course, she had. Link should’ve know the universe wasn’t really found of him and Ravio would still wanna go no matter how tired he was.
Ravio was masked as a blue Zirro and he kept his dark green bunny costume. Zelda had given it to him before he had to leave her back in Hyrule to the hands of Ganon. He still remembered the panic and sadness of leaving her behind. She had asked him to look for someone from the other side to help them. He looked at Ravios excited face as he suddenly pulled him through the crowd. He hoped he hadn’t failed her.
He quickly forgot about all of his affairs, the colours, the lights and so many deliciously smelling food! Ravio kept pulling him too many different games, the pain in his leg almost forgotten. Cucco dodging, apple catching, shooting galleries, he never had so much carefree fun before.
Ravio was so happy to have brought him along. Link held Ravios hand in an affectionate way, something he dared not show. The luminous orange lights made his eyes so much beautiful. He was glowing. He wanted to embrace him and never let him go.
_____________________
They arrived at the arena where many large man wearing the scariest suits Ravio had ever seen were preparing to fight. So many people were coming to watch and bet, trusting into each other, making Ravio loose his grip on Links hand.
Link called his name but no sound could be heard in the blending of so many voices.
He was surrounded by people, warm giant bodies of flesh, only small flashes of light visible.
He fell to the floor, dust involving him.
He was too hot. To small. His hearting was beating errantly.
He was alone.
-Hey are kid are you okay? – asked a large man with a pig mask.
He screamed, tears treating to spill, bunny hood away from his face. The man tried to touch him, but he was too far gone. For in his place he saw another giant pig.
Grabbed the pocket knife on his belt and trusted.
He heard someone else scream. Someone was holding his hands. He opened his eyes.
-Link, are you okay? - For a moment he could have sworn that soft warm voice was Zelda’s. But in her place, holding his hands close to chest was Ravio. – Link, please speak to me.
He almost put a knife through his heart. He almost killed Ravio.
He ran as fast as he could. Away from there.
Ravio could only run after him, even with his leg in so much pain, he wouldn’t stop. He followed him to Turtle Rock, where he collapsed. They couldn’t go on like this.
-Mr. Hero please stop!
He stood motionless, suddenly turning around and screaming – Stop calling me that! … Do you have any idea how much that name hurts me? I’m no hero, I couldn’t save Zelda, I couldn’t stop Ganon and I almost killed you! Please…
Tears were spilling, fast and uncontrollable. In shame, he turned around and sit on the bay of the lake, holding his legs close to his chest. Ravio moved to sit down beside him. He didn’t know what to tell him or what to do. He had never gone through the things Link did. He had lived up to this point a peaceful life. He didn’t know the full story, but… he adored Link, he was his roommate, his friend, someone he admired.
He moved his hand to Links back, swaying it alongside. - I forgive you. – a breath – I know you would never hurt me on purpose.
Link’s movements stopped. Ravio felt his anger rise, he wanted to scream, but controlled himself.
-Why?
-You’re my greatest friend and I trust you. I don’t know what you’ve been through or how that messed you up… When I saw your eyes back there, I saw fear, pure fear, I can’t really describe it. It was almost like… you weren’t there. Like that panic took over you. You were just… trying to defend yourself against whatever you saw back there. – He looked back at Link, whose right eye was looking at him. -  I don’t know if I can make it totally okay, but I wanna help.
He took Links right hand in both of his. – I wanna try to…fix this. A..and if it takes saving both worlds to do it so be it. If I have to fight Ganon, I will. – “for you” lay silent in the air. Link looked fully at him. He looked so determined. He wanted to “save him”.
Link blushed and turned his face. A small smile graced his lips. He didn’t believe a word he said but, by the goddesses above, he was gonna be the end of him.
Ravio could never change the scares his past left. He could never erase the watercolours of blood at his feet in name of a broken royalty or the pains of battle. The sad eyes of a gentle girl who carried the spats and blames of kings and queens before her. The clouds of darkness in every step, every turn and slash of a sword to a cruel monster. The regret and shame of a laying bloody nobody as he watched his princess being taken away by such creature.
Her beautiful tears as she kissed his cheek goodbye as he parted to another world, leaving her in the dark.
- You may not believe it, but you’re my hero.
Link meet his eyes.
-You are so brave and strong. When I saw your face for the first time and you told you went against Ganon, I couldn’t believe it. You must have lived through so much struggle. – He turned Link to him, holding both of his hands. – And after all that, you still have patience for me. You still give me compassion, you try to teach me everything you know, you take care of me when I’m hurt.
- You know that could only be interest right?
-Come on, Link. If it were only that, you wouldn’t lay next to me when I have nightmares. – he chuckled – Or make me apple pies, because you know their my favourite. Go play octorock with me or laugh at my bad jokes. – Ravio’s cheeks reddened. – Or embrace me on rainy days, close to the fireplace with a blanket when I’m almost asleep. - Ravio squeezed both of Links hands. Looking at them, instead of the other boy, with a smile. - You are very special to me.
The moon shone beautifully on the lake, like tiny specks of stars, reflecting back to Links blue eyes. Only the wind could be heard clashing through the leaves. Only the goddesses’ eyes on them as Link gently touched his forehead to Ravios. They locked eyes, Link’s warm and sincere, smile so beautiful. Ravios breath was lost to him, both their hearts no longer theirs.
-Thank you Ravio. You are very… very special to me too. You are very important to me. – They started to giggle. Ravio lauched himself to his arms. Both faces flushed, both smilling, something pure, an emotion confessed without its name.
Lying in the grass in each other’s arms, only their laughter heard through the rifts of the waves. The bugs flying around them as their breaths become one.

Thank you.

portfolio review 3- Rachel Goodyear
I sent a pdf file of my portfolio to Rachel Goodyear and some questions which might help me with my work.  she has been extremely busy with her own work but it has been a honour for her to have her time and look through my work.
My questions for Rachel Goodyear
What things do you like about my work ?
Very open, sensitive and joyful. I like the drawing style, the use of marks and the colours give them a great energy.
What things can i improve within my work?
What formats are these usually displayed in offline? Would love to see what you could do with prints, installation, projection and zines.
Is there any artists or subject matter which i should look into ?
Margaret Harrison - drawings, superheroes and gender politics
Claude Cahun - surrealist photographer, gender and identity
Louis Fratino
David Hoyle
You have found a way of working that is consistent with every piece of work you do.
Yes - but this has been a long-term process. If I want to introduce any new techniques into my work I think long-term and introduce things gradually rather than suddenly changing things so you can see a coherent flow/ it doesn’t look random.
Have you ever been asked to create a piece of work for a client to their liking rather than the way you work?
I have been approached to do this but generally turn this down. I am in the area of fine art so my way of working is create an original in the context of my ongoing practice and then this is sold to private collector or gallery collection. This is done through a gallerist (agent), so there is an understanding that a client will get in touch with them based on my previous works and style. On occasion when I have been approached for commission it is thoroughly discussed before I commit. I am happy to try new approaches with my work for a commission - especially if it a collaboration - but there always has to be a coherency in how it fits with the rest of my practice.
How have you over come this or worked around this?
Has this ever happened to you? If not, what advice could you give?
I think a level of flexibility can be good, but if someone asks you to do something that is nothing like you’re own work, my first question to them would be ‘why’. An example of my own: I was asked to make a drawing for a book cover, but the publisher wanted something very specific in the style of another artist. I asked why they had asked me. The answer was that they knew me and knew I could draw. I politely told them that I had my own style and way of working and it was very important for me to keep my own recognisable style. I also explained that as a fine-artist I created works that were part of my ongoing explorations, style and creative language - I don’t illustrate to others’ ideas - I am trained as a fine artist, so an illustrator would be much more appropriate for that kind of job. What I did do, though, was presented some works I had already made that I felt fit with the atmosphere of the stories and agreed a fee should they want to use one of the images. They did, and the author went on to request artworks for the covers of two more publications.
I am very influence by lot of work to do with expression with the way people use colour, marking and work which deal with identity like for drag queens and super heroes, constantly portraying peoples gender or a persona in a creative way, what things do you get influenced by which connects with your work?
I find influences and inspiration in a number of different places. At present I have been looking a lot a women surrealist artists who were largely overlooked in their time due to the dominance of male artists at that time. Artists such as Dorothea Tanning and Leonora Carrington. I am also a huge fan of artists Louise Bourgeois and Marlene Dumas. I find a lot of inspiration from books too - The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman a particular favourite and a lot of interest in psychoanalysis and the subconscious.
Sometimes i struggle a lot trying to get out a art block and it drive me insane to get out of that negative zone, do you have  those days where you look a paper for hours upon hours and nothing happens?  if you have do you have any tips to get yourself out of the block .
Yes! Very often! It can be quite frustrating and demoralising at times but I have learned little tricks along the way that help me work myself out of a rut. Sometimes it can be very simple like going for a walk around the block! Otherwise I will begin to draw something purely as a drawing exercise. This might be simply drawing a still life (I keep interesting bits and bobs round the studio specifically for this), or I will draw my left hand, or do a face study from a photograph or in the mirror. Blocks are particularly bad when you are trying to force ideas to come - by doing studies that do not have the pressure to be anything other than an exercise can rest the mind a little and allow more creative thoughts to flow. If I am in a really bad rut, then I dedicate time to reading and looking at other artists. Best thing I have found, though, if I have a block is to still go to the studio and if I really can’t draw that day then I read or put on an art documentary.
I love using a different types of media to create expressive marks like for example I like using a Pocsa brush pen because It can give you some much motion and you can control the conscience of the line / marks, what types of media / tools or programs you like to use?
Are there any media, tools and programs which i should invest on getting to help me in the future?
I’m very analogue in the way I work! I am mostly working with pencils, watercolours, inks. I like the pencil for intricate detail and control, and then mix it up a bit with loose washes in watercolour or ink. When I am making animations, the intervention of any digital programme is kept to a minimum - I make hand-drawn frames, scan them into the computer and then stitch them together into sequence in a programme such as Premier Elements. The best programme I have found for animation is After Effects, though it is a programme I don’t personally use - I have had help from others in the past to do the digital side of the animations. The way I make animations is more like a collage.

Assignment 4 Review
Project: Tools and materials
“ You experimented more with watercolour. You are clearly working very hard at this” I love it. I took a lot of time just to look a watercolour and have trying to work out the way a prefer to work.
“ These are among the strongest pieces of work you have produced so far. (the umbrella and 1950s)” I am really happy with the final result even if they are not perfect but I think what made the different is the detail. Every time I tried to work fast and furious, the result is nice but I do not love it (like Assignment 4) There are people who transform sketchs drawing into final pieces easily, I do not think I one of those people.
Project: Audiences
“it is this direct approach works, and your two finished posters are very strong, graphic and well-coloured images” I am really happy to hear this, I work really hard to add detail into the drawings, I normally found computer drawings soulless because if the lack of marks and lovely details, so I added them in a wacoom, so it was a nice compromise.
“ the viewer is almost placed in the museum as if they are looking at the animals” I have used this idea before and it really work for me, used a frame and mostly work inside and break it. I think it creates a nice 3D balance.
Project: Areas of illustration
“ overall the illustration is a very good design and incorporates the idea of the title very well” as I went back, I do not think it is good, I think is fine for a coverbook but I think is very neutral, lack character... I undestand the tutor point but now, a few mouth later I can see more problem with this illustration that I did before.
“ Your fish paintings are very good, and your watercolour technique is improving again; they are very professional looking images. It is not so easy to imaging them on the side of a van as they are not so much of a restaurant logo as a finished illustration” I think the tutor is right but I can simplified the fish into a blue and white drawing to create a logo (I think) but when I was working on it I was looking to a more appetizing, up marking illustration that a logo. About the drawing, I have fun creating the texture in the fish and the original one has a pear watercolor effect that are perfect for a fish... The research pay off.
“ For your ‘Mother’ tattoo you chose to examine more complex image-making than the traditional ‘hearts and scrolls’ type of tattoo.” I straggle a bit with the idea of writing a name or drawing a portrait so I tried to explore a more in deep idea of motherhood. Sometimes, I think too much but it is a way to elaborate your understanding of the world around you.
Project: Visual distortion
“You don’t seem to enjoy the process of simplification and collage, but your final coloured drawings are good in the way they are strange, distorted and stylised.” I would like to said my tutor is wrong but it is totally true. I do not enjoy collage (I love them but I cannot made one) I also was elaborating my eye problem by drawing. This was a constant in this assignment, the used of drawing as a way to understand something, even when I did not notice at the moment. I only came to understand that I was working on my own personal health problem when I saw the huge eye after I finish as it was the first time I was looking at it. At some point I felt like to go back an work more on that to fit the criteria but the true is, I love the drawing and they are a representation of how I felt.
Project: Character development
(Note: at this point, I have a lot of visual problems )
“ You were asked to develop a series characters, producing drawings from different angles, and expressing different emotions and expressions.” I totally forgot to add them to the blog but I only did it for one character.
“ it would have been better to see this as visual rather than written development” I wrote a story about this character because I could not see well so I added a bit to the blog, so this is the reason it is mostly writting (sorry about that) I did a lot of visual research to put the face together, mostly but looking into pictures of young white men with a particular nose and I tried to combien that...
“ your finished (digitally?) painted portraits show a suitably malevolent (creepy) character. The skin texture and folds in the clothes are very well modelled, and the shadows and tone of the wall are very effective.” It was done digitally so I could enlarge the image and work, they was a lot of drawing before I did the final and I also work on the colours (a palette) because it is easy to get lost in so many options.
Feedback on assignment
“the finished drawing where you have the three separate groups of objects doesn’t really come together.” I totally agree. I  got tired of the assignment and I have to finish so I rushed. I think the work is horrible! This is another example of my working fast and furious. It does not work.
Next step
1. I will love to work on food illustration to have some fun.
2. I love to used my course to work on what is happening to me, to look into deep things that I do not normally have time to think about...
3. finish the creating a character exercise...
4. Re-do the final assignment.
