summary: Richie pushed himself up on his elbows and smirked. “You know, Eddie my love, we suddenly have great potential right here. Don’t you remember what it was like? Back in Derry… all the sneaking around, the thrill of getting caught all the time? What an adrenaline rush!”

“What a constant risk of anxiety attack you mean,” Eddie corrected, but he was grinning too. “But yeah, it was pretty exciting. What’s your point?”

“What if… and really hear me out here, Eds… we just let them think we were broken up?”

“Hey, buddy, how you doing?”

Richie Tozier tugged one earbud out and looked up at his room mate in confusion. He and Stanley Uris had grown to be good friends in the last two years that they’d been together in the college dorms- though, Richie had been surprised when Stan had been willing to agree to room with him a second time. They were all salt and nothing sweet, such different souls in one confined space, it was very rare that they were ever particularly gentle with one another. It was only ever when something was seriously wrong that they’d drop their harsh outer friendship and show through what they really were- best friends who cared deeply for one another.

Richie couldn’t think of anything that would have caused Stan to drop his sodium levels. He wracked his brain of everything that had happened over the last forty eight hours, but it threatened to give him a headache. He couldn’t focus on that and his English Lit paper. “I’m fine? This paper’s a killer, though. Mathers can suck my dick.”

A worried crinkle appeared between Stan’s brow and Richie’s heart picked up slightly. Had something really bad happened and Richie had just totally forgotten? Oh shit, had he repressed some sort of terrible experience from today? Did Stan know something that he didn’t, what-

“Pats and I are going to Floats tonight for dinner,” Stan broke through Richie’s internal panicking’s. Stanley had recently started going out with a girl from his Algebra course, though it had been a nearly year long struggle for Richie, having to watch Stan pine over her when it obvious that the girl had been just as smitten. For whatever reason. “Did you want us to bring you back some curly fries? I know they’re your favourite.”

Richie’s eyebrows disappeared completely behind his moppy bangs. Stanley has never, not once in the nearly two years they’d known each other, offered to pick up food for Richie. No matter how much Richie had begged him to. “I- Yeah, man. That… That’d be great. Thanks?”

Stan nodded once, and reached out to squeeze at Richie shoulder, before turning and walking from their shared living space. Richie shook his head slightly, confused but also looking forward to Floats’ curly fries, he’d barely turned back to his computer before his phone was lighting up. Beverly Marsh’s face lit up the screen and Richie almost declined, assuming it was a butt dial. Beverly Marsh did not make phone calls, that was just a known fact.

“Bev?” Richie inquired lightly, hoping that he’d get to listen in on some sort embarrassing private conversation and not Bev getting busy with her boyfriend. Richie had been burned before.

“Hey, Rich! How are you doing?” Bev’s too-chipper voice rang through the speaker and Richie had to frown.

“Why is everybody asking me that?” Richie asked, hearing the whine in his voice. “I’m peachy fucking keen. Nothing wrong on Rich Bitch front.”

Bev made an annoying sympathetic noise on the other end and Richie really did feel as though he were going to tug his own curls out. “Ben and I got Infinity War on DVD.” Bev continued. “Did you wanna come over and watch it with us tonight? We can cry into giant bowls of popcorn then obsess over online theories on how its going to get resolved.”

Richie hummed. “I would love to, Bev, but I actually have to get this stupid fucking English Lit paper done or I’m going to flunk out.”

“Oh. Okay.” Beverly sounded almost disappointed�� no, not disappointed? Worried? Maybe worried. “Text me if you need anything, yeah?”

“Sure, Bev,” Richie said, pinching the brim of his nose. “Whatever.” Richie clicked end on the call and tossed his phone onto the comforter. He only looked at his blank document for a moment before grabbing his phone once again and scrolling through the contacts.

Richie scrambled up from his bed, throwing on what he knew were Eddie’s favourite pair of grey sweatpants, and started throwing his things into worn down backpack. He’d had it since early high school, and he knew he was going to tear a hole right through it soon enough, but he couldn’t be bothered to get a new one before that happened.

He’d only bounced out the door to his dorm before he almost ran smack into Audra Phillips. He hadn’t known the girl long, she’d only transferred to their college a few months earlier, but their majors ran into very similar circles and he’d only seen more of her since she’d started seeing Eddie’s room mate, Bill. She was a nice girl, if not a little bland, and Richie enjoyed her company. She was, of course, not somebody he expected to see standing outside his dorm room with two cups of Starbucks.

“Hey,” she said, blinking up at him. She almost seemed that she was as surprised to find herself here as Richie was to see her. “I brought you a coffee? Chocolate mocha frapp, right?”

Richie made a happy noise and took the cold drink from Audra’s awaiting hand. “Dude, I love seven dollar drinks. What do I owe this tongue-numbing pleasure?”

“I figured that the English Lit paper was kicking your ass,” Audra said lightly. “Amongst… other things. Thought I’d be friendly.”

Richie crinkled his nose up, green straw almost in his mouth. If one more person implied that something was wrong when Richie had absolutely no idea what that could be, he might actually start screaming. But Audra was smiling so sweetly at him, and as far as Richie knew the girl had never done anything wrong in pretty much her entire life, he just nodded at her and thanked her again for the drink. They exchanged a few more civil pleasantries before Richie excused himself and made it the rest of the way to Eddie and Bill’s room.

Eddie was seated in his bed, surrounded by his mountain of yellow pillows and wrapped up in his soft green comforter. Eddie had, without a doubt, the most comfortable bed Richie had ever been in. That was, possibly, a little bit of a bias but it was true. The only good thing that Richie thought Sonia Kaspbrak had ever done- besides actually giving birth to Eddie- was insisting he get so many pillows and blankets to make his dorm bed safer for her Eddie Bear. Eddie seemed to hate it, tossing most of the pillows to the foot end of his bed when actually going to sleep, and using the green comforter only, but Richie absolutely loved it and Eddie always put the pillows back at the head when he knew Richie was coming over.

Richie had known Eddie easily as long as he’d known anybody. He supposed the only people he would have known longer were his parents and older sister, meeting Eddie at his orientation of kindergarten. The older they’d gotten, the harder Sonia Kaspbrak had tried to push them apart, and all the closer they’d grown. By seventh grade, it was almost impossible to find one without the other. RichieTozierandEddieKaspbrak. Richie had probably been in love with him even back then, but they’d only made the jump to boyfriends near the end of sophomore year. Despite a few short, drama-filled fights and break ups, they’d been together ever since.

“So, did like… my mother die and everybody forgot to tell me?” Richie asked, chocolate coffee dripping down the corner of his mouth.

Eddie startled, sitting up on his pillow mountain and shoving his laptop aside. “What? What happened to your mom? Rich-“

“No! No, no,” Richie started shaking his head, dropping down beside him. “Mags is fine, she texted me this morning. I just… I’ve had the weirdest fucking afternoon.”

“So you decided you’d make a joke about your mom dying?” Eddie squawked, cheeks starting to turn pink. “What the fuck, Richard?”

“I just…” Richie sighed. “Bev invited me over, Audra brought me coffee. Stanley offered to bring me home curly fries from Floats? I am like… dying and don’t know it?”

Eddie shook his head slightly, frowning, before slapping a hand over his mouth. “Oh, shit. Oh, shit. Fucking Bill…” Eddie chuckled. “Do you remember last week when you forgot about breakfast and I was super pissed? Didn’t talk to you all day?”

“Uh, yeah, vividly.” Richie grumbled, jutting out his bottom lip. “You’re the one who tried to make plans with me when I was half asleep, you know. You should know better than that after 18 years, Eds.”

“Don’t call me that,” Eddie rolled his eyes. “But no, I was super pissed off and I ranted to Bill. I might have sort of said I was going to break up with you. Guess he thinks that I did… and he told everybody.”

Richie’s mouth dropped open. “Everybody is being nice to me because they think I got dumped? What the fuck! Why would you tell Bill you were going to break up with me?”

Eddie shook his head and took Richie’s hand in his. “I tell you I’m going to break up with you twice a week. I didn’t realize that somebody else would take it so seriously. We’ll just tell everybody that we didn’t break up, or that we got back together, or whatever…”

Richie pushed himself up on his elbows and smirked. “You know, Eddie my love, we suddenly have great potential right here. Don’t you remember what it was like? Back in Derry… all the sneaking around, the thrill of getting caught all the time? What an adrenaline rush!”

Panic moved quickly across Eddie’s face. “You want to break up? Richie, what the fuck, since when, why didn’t you-“

Richie clapped a hand over Eddie’s panic-rambling mouth. “No, no, shut up, I don’t want to break up. Ever. Jesus Christ, no. I’m just saying… if we let everybody think we’re broken up, we could have that thrill of sneaking around again. It could be fun, you know, keeping it a secret. Kind of kinky, definitely hot.”

Eddie still didn’t look convinced, but his cheeks had started to warm up under the idea. “It would never work. You couldn’t pull it off.”

Richie made a loud, offended noise. “I couldn’t pull it off? You’re the one who won’t be able to keep their hands off all of this.” Richie gesturing up and down his body, waggling his eyebrows.

“I’d fake puking right now, but you’re wearing those stupid grey sweats and you know I’m weak for them,” Eddie muttered under his breath, looking highly put out. Richie burst out laughing and draped himself around Eddie’s mid-section. He pressed his face into his stomach and blew a raspberry over top of Eddie’s T-shirt. “Admit it, Eddie Spaghetti, you would absolutely blow it before I would. Without a doubt.”

Eddie tangled his hand in Richie’s messy curls, pushing him away from his stomach, but keeping his fingers deep in the curls. “Care to put your money where your trash mouth is, Tozier?”

“First off all,” Richie grinned before bouncing forward and kissing Eddie deeply. He dug his teeth into Eddie’s body lip and tugged slightly. Eddie made a small whimpering noise when Richie pulled back, when only caused Richie grin to grow. “You love my Trashmouth and all the trashy things it can do. Secondly, when have you ever known me to turn down a bet?”

“Not often enough,” Eddie looked mildly horrified, no doubt remembering the stupid ass things Richie had done on bets and dares in the many years he’d known him. “But we can discuss the arrangements of this bet you’re going to loose those your fucking pants off?”

Richie cackled.

The Cobalt Prince: Act II, Scenes I & II

(Welcome back for act two of my old screenplay, The Cobalt Prince. If you enjoyed act one, I only hope your enjoyment gets better and better with each passing installment. Happy reading, and be sure to let me know what you think. Anyways, here it is:)

Scene I:

[Curtains open to a long table inside the castle. King Leon, Ravel, and General Kall sit upon the table with a map displayed out before them.]

Kall: This has to go exactly right. At daybreak tomorrow we will already be setting up the streets to pull people away from our path. We will pull you across the center square, starting off when the sun is high. We will end back at this place for you to give a closing address about the day. Easy.

Leon: Daybreak? I hate the morning. Why are we up now? (Sighs) Very well. I want this to be extravagant! Guards will start marching in front of me just a hair before our exit.

Kall: I suggest maximum guard coverage around you. This is supposed to improve relations with the kingdom and its people, but we must protect you, sir.

Leon: I need no protection. I need the support of the people. I need the people to see the military and its strength. I want, by the end of the festival, twice as many men volunteering to serve to reclaim the land we lost at the battle of Rodela.

Kall: Sir, I must say, the people do not think of you highly. This would be the perfect time to strike and we must be prepare-

Leon: (Hand slams on the table) No! No other in this kingdom will match my sword. They will not strike me down.

Kall: I insist upon you having some extra form of protection.

Leon: I insist upon you shutting up. You are not king. Send in the others. They will agree with me.

[Kall exits, stomping.]

Ravel: Father, what if you were to be struck down? What happens? Is it all up to me? Must I carry the name? Or does Mother get to help?

Leon: I promise no sword in my side could stop me. And, if I were to go, I only hope my wife wouldn’t have to see. I fear she will go before me though. Ravel… she is growing ever so ill.

Ravel: Is that not all better reason to be protective?

Leon: (Sighing) We must not live in fear of any other land, Ravel. Nor, in the fear of what may come. A rock from the sky could knock me off into the trees, but it only may come, not will. If we slink into the shadows, what kind of king am I? What land are we?

[Kall enters with General Dontelle, General Oellidos, and General Arvick.]

Kall: A living one! You all will lead us to our graves! Here they are, like you asked, Dontelle, Oellidos, and Arvick, here to agree no matter what!

[The three generals stand at attention directly in front of the king.]

Dontelle: I am strongly in support of your endeavor to look as a caring king. I say you run with open arms!

Oellidos: Easily! You are a strong man sir, and you are more than capable of holding this festival with minimal protection. I say we hoist you high upon the sky, and you can sing for the world to hear a song of revolution and respect across the land.

Arvick: Guards are stupid! I like songs!

Kall: You are all fools if you think the people who are suffering below us are going to sit and be happy with him being propped up above all else. I have never been not upon your side, my king, but I must say, you are not a caring man in the eyes of the people.

Leon: Enough talk! You don’t get to tell me how my people see me! You do not speak to the people, you carry a shield for them. I talk to the men of this land. As does my son. Ravel! Tell these men that the people of my land will respect me on this day.

Ravel: [Hesitant] I say…

Leon: Out with it son.

[Stage freezes.]

Ravel: Out with it, he says. Pick a side, he says. Support me or die, he says. What am I to do? Certainly not say what I mean to say. Can’t have that in the lovely world my father has created. I cannot disobey his word, yet at the same time, I know every part of his plan is foolish. I didn’t want a festival to begin with, nor do I think he should be hoisted into the sky. No protection. It’s stupid. Then again, my father didn’t ask me about what I wanted. He did not ask me what I had to say. He asked for someone to agree with him. He asked Leon, not Ravel. I am a mirror for him to feel superior. Eh, why bother denying him what he wants?

[Freeze ends.]

Leon: Ravel?

Ravel: I say, that they will not chose such a busy day.

Kall: Ravel!

Ravel: I say, they wouldn’t attack the king on a day all about him in fear of backlash.

Kall: Ravel!

Leon: Let my son speak!

Ravel: I say, that if anyone is sure of their own life… let it be… my father.

Leon: So it is decided! We will do it my way. Arvick, Kall, Dontele, Octopus!

Oel: Oellidos, sir.

Leon: Yes! Take off to the furthest reaches of the town and get all guards on a schedule of marching. They will know every step of the festival by the night's end! We only have a day to prepare. Now! Go off!

All Generals: Yes sir!

[All Generals exit.]

Leon: Son! I thank you for your support! We will have a truly grand festival where everyone can see how amazing and truly powerful I am. They will see the best of me, and the best of you. I want you right up there with me on my throne in the sky Ravel. My one son. My only son. You will make me proud, I am sure of it. Now, off I go, to be a king. Do with yourself whatever.

[Exit Leon.]

Ravel: Father, I am scared to make you proud. I am unsure if I can have your respect, and the happiness of Matilia. I hope it takes years for you to die. It will certainly take years for me to decide.

[Stage goes dark.]

Scene II:

[Stage lights up at daybreak at the military post just outside the castle. Matron rises from his bed to find the rest of the beds empty.]

Matron: Damn this bed. I could sleep better on the ground. Why is everyone already gone? Is it not dawn? I hate this life.

[Enter Julius.]

Jul: You’re a fool if you think you can sleep all day! Come on! We start early in preparation for the upcoming festival.

Matron: They won’t even let me be a guard on patrol, yet they want me up before the sun is even fully out? Before light barely peeks through the trenches we call houses?

Jul: Up!

Matron: Very well. I hope for some food before I become a mule to the empire’s whims.

Jul: You can take a swig from the salt lick out back. Or maybe find some worms in the grass.

Matron: I pray I find a snake instead, and let it swallow me whole.

Jul: [aside] I didn’t realize he was in that kind of mood.

Matron: Where do we off to?

Jul: Take yourself outside, and look with your own eyes. I don’t need to do all the work.

Matron: You hardly do any. Last time I saw you be a mule was when you were being a jabbering jackass a half a wit ago.

Jul: The very same day I lost my will to go on! And my arm has never been the same since.

Matron: It was two years ago! Your arm is fine! You just wish to get out of as much work as you can. I wish Kall would whip you once in awhile.

Jul: Kall is on his last leg, Matron. He wouldn’t last another week be he not so loyal to the empire. But, from what I hear in the goings on, King Leon’s faith in his most proud general has been weakening.

Matron: No.

Jul: Yes.

Matron: No.

Jul: Yes.

Matron: No. Jul: Yes. Yes. Yes. YES.

Jul: And, to top it off? I hear Kall has had a sustained injury. All this will lead to his downfall, meaning there is going to be a new general. I think we know who it is, cough.

Matron: Why did you just say the word cough? That means noth-

Jul: It means that I could be next in line. I am, after all, the best fighter.

[Bilov comes onto stage, sees the two, and hides behind a bed. Only Matron notices.]

Matron: You were only a bit better than the wizard. He actually survived without an injury from the battle of Rodela. You were beaten by a child the day before.

Jul: Beaten by none such! It was a test of his character more than of my own. I was happy to make him feel like he won.

Matron: I see he is the one to usurp the position to general. Bilov is the child of Kall, after all.

Jul: He is too young. About your age.

Matron: I don’t see Kall kicking the bucket yet, and when the time comes I am sure Bilov will take the title with one hand tied behind his back.

Jul: You only want so because you know if I were general, you’d be out of here in a heartbeat. Or, at least given a lash to the back. Maybe a hundred!

Matron: You could be general. But, if you were, we would lose more than three towns. You would have us all get on top of tables and announce our own arrival. Paint our suits and swords gold and claim our victory for the gods. No tactical intuition. You would lead us into a massacre by the end of the first day you held the position.

Jul: What do you know of tactical brilliance?

Matron: I know one should never charge into every town we can find no matter our level of supplies. And, I have no idea why we attack the strongest place around us instead of trying to build our own empire. We need to take out the weak and use their resources to build and unstoppable force that relies not on the number of men, but with what we do with the men. We need to learn how to properly ration our supplies, and teach the men of the army to go with less and fight even longer and harder. We need to actually train ourselves instead of throwing everything we have against a wall to see what can dent it. We are not capable of handling Ragnarok, and we should’ve never tried to do so. I could easily tell you of where the next place to go should’ve been. Or the next place to rally for supplies, and guys who could spy on the inside. That is called tactical brilliance.

[Enter Bilov from behind the shadows.]

Bilov: Is that so? That sounds like a plan straight from my father's mouth. Who are you again, young knight?

Matron: Matron, a youth just trying to find his way through and find his purpose. And someone to endlessly serve, no matter the cost.

Bilov: What you said was inspiring. How long have you been in service?

Matron: Two years. Ever since the day your father caught me and I felt a lash to the shoulder.

Bilov: I remember. Weren’t you supposed to receive seven? One for each mouthful?

Matron: Yes. And, it makes me delighted to say so, but I am surprised he thought I only had seven mouthfuls. I took two loafs! HA!

Bilov: So, you’re a perfect strategist, and you have the cunning to even fool my father into lightening the sentence to the point of it being a flick on the wrist? That settles it.

[Bilov grabs Matron by the arm.]

Bilov: Come with me now. We are going.

Matron: Going where?

Bilov: To my father, he needs to hear these ideas of how to succeed. I think you just let yourself rise up in the ranks, Matron.

[Exit Bilov and Matron.]

Jul: I am smart too! I promise! Dammit. This kingdom has no respect for me and my talents. I deserve kinghood itself! Maybe… I should get it. Maybe. It’s mine for the taking.

[Lights go off as Julius exits.]

Look Alive, Valentine [AO3]

Sirius Black had never been more horrified in his life.

Well, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration. There was probably a time when he was a bit more horrified than he was right now, but he was going to ignore that fact for the moment. He was the unofficial Hogwarts Drama Queen, after all.

“Jaaames,” he called from where he was sprawled across his four poster bed. “Jaaames,” he called again, this time throwing a pillow at the other boy’s head for emphasis.

“What do you want?” James replied, annoyed, as he threw the pillow back at Sirius.

“James, the greatest tragedy of the century is going to occur next week! And we’re stuck in the middle of it! Oh, my God, I can’t believe this,” huffed Sirius.

“The hell are you going on about?” James asked, confused.

“James,” Sirius said, sitting up to look the other boy in the eyes. “James. The full moon. This month, it’s on Valentine’s Day.”

James stared at Sirius and Sirius stared back. A look of dawning comprehension passed over James’ face, and he opened his mouth. Then he closed it, then frowned.

“That is really rough, Padfoot. Jesus,” he said, frustrated. “That’s just - wow.” He furrowed his brow and rubbed his forehead.

“I know,” Sirius groaned, flopping onto his back. “Do you think Moony’s going to want to do anything? I mean, I know he’s usually bad before the full moon, but…the fourteenth. It’s special, you know? I don’t want to not do anything if he does want to.”

“Yeah. You should ask him about it. I know you wanted to surprise him with something, but you don’t want to…I don’t know, hurt him or anything.”

“Yeah, yeah. You’re right. I’ll talk to him about it.”

Sirius had been planning his and Remus’ Valentine’s date for several weeks now, but hadn’t checked the lunar calendar until today. He cursed the full moon for falling on on what he considered the most important day of the year.

For Sirius Black, February fourteenth wasn’t just Valentine’s Day. It marked the one year anniversary of one of the the happiest days of Sirius’ life. Last Valentine’s Day was the first time he had taken Remus out on a date, and they considered it their anniversary (even though Sirius had technically asked him out on February eighth). It was also the day they had their first kiss, and the first time either of them had said “I love you.” (Some people might find it odd to say this on the first date, but they had already known each other for so long they felt that they well aware of what their feelings for each other were.) Sirius highly doubted that Remus didn’t know when the full moon was this month. It was time they talked about it.

Sirius sighed, stood up, and put on his robe. “Where are you going?” asked James.

“I’m going to find Moony. We need to plan.” And with that, Sirius was out the door and mentally rehearsing the best way to bring the topic up to his boyfriend.

A week later, Sirius and Remus were slowly making their way towards Hogsmeade. The ground was covered with snow on either side of the path to the village, and on occasion a snowflake or two would make an appearance in the chilly February wind. James and Lily had left together earlier that morning, and Peter was going later with a Hufflepuff girl he had asked out three days before. Remus was bundled up in more layers than Sirius thought it was possible to fit in (including one of Sirius’ shirts), and Sirius thought he looked incredibly adorable.

“Are you sure you’re okay to do this? Because we don’t have to do this. We could just stay in the castle if you want,” Sirius said, glancing concernedly at the tawny haired boy beside him.

“Padfoot, I’m fine,” Remus insisted, though his voice was very quiet and a bit raspy. “I’m not going to let the full moon ruin our first anniversary.” He looked frustrated but determined, and Sirius knew he wouldn’t turn back no matter how much pain he was in.

“Okay. Okay. Just making sure,” Sirius replied, still looking a bit nervous. He’d just have to keep an eye on him.

Remus smiled fondly at him. “Come on, git. Why don’t we talk about something a bit more cheery, yeah?”

They talked about this and that until they reached the little café Remus liked so much. It was small and warm and lined with bookshelves, and Remus came here every chance he got. Sirius had only come once or twice (his usual haunts were Zonko’s or The Three Broomsticks), but he liked how happy Remus seemed to be here. They ordered two hot chocolates and a couple of pastries and sat down at a seat overlooking the street outside.

“Sooo,” Sirius said, somewhat awkwardly. “One year of us.”

“Yeah,” Remus replied, smiling. “I can’t believe it’s been this long.”

“I know. It seems like just yesterday I was stumbling over my own words trying to explain how much I wanted to kiss you.”

“Padfoot, you did that ten minutes ago, and then we kissed in the little alley next to this café.”

“Yeah, and that won’t be the last time that happens.” Sirius winked. “It’s funny to think that a year ago, I had no idea you would agree to such scandalous behavior.”

Remus laughed, and Sirius felt his heart flutter a little. “Well, now you don’t really have to ask anymore. You know I’ll say yes.”

“You probably will, but I’ll ask anyway. I am a gentleman, you know.”

Remus laughed again. He was so pretty when he smiled. He was pretty all the time, actually, but especially when he smiled. Sirius couldn’t help but fall a little bit more in love with him, and he told him so. Remus started blushing, and Sirius felt as though all the air had left his lungs.

“You need to stop being so damn cute all the time. You’re going to kill me,” Sirius said sternly.

“But that’s the plan, sweetheart. I’m just in it for the insurance money.”

“I knew it. I’ll be filing for our divorce shortly, Moony. And to make up for the deep, emotional scarring you have caused me, you can pay for my drink,” said Sirius dramatically. Remus was trying to smother his giggles.

“I obviously couldn’t have caused too much damage if hot chocolate will make up for it.”

“Hot chocolate will make up for anything. You of all people should know this, Moony.”

They continued bantering like this for the rest of the afternoon. When they finished their pastries, they ordered more, and didn’t leave the little café until the light had begun to fade.

“I should probably get back to the castle,” Remus said glumly. “Madame Pomfrey will be looking for me.”

“All right then, fine sir,” Sirius said, jumping to his feet. “May I have the honor of escorting you back home?”

“You may indeed,” Remus answered with mock formality. He tried to stand up, winced, and sat back down.

“Oh, my God Rem, are you okay?” Sirius hurried to his side.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Just a little weak, that’s all.” He tried to stand up again. “Ah. Okay. This might work.”

Sirius gently grabbed Remus’ arm and started leading him to the door. They waved to the girl behind the counter before stepping out into the cold winter air.

As soon as they were outside, Sirius wrapped his arm around Remus’ wait. “Look alive, Valentine,” he whispered into the other boys’ ear, causing Remus to crack a small smile. Once they were outside of the village, Sirius picked up Remus and continued on with him in his arms.

“I can walk, you know,” Remus said indignantly.

“Of course you can, but princes should never walk when they can be carried,” Sirius replied, placing a soft kiss on Remus’ forehead. Remus was about to reply when what Sirius had said fully registered, and he ended up blushing furiously and burying his face into Sirius’ neck. Sirius beamed.

When they were able to see the castle, Sirius gently put Remus down, but kept an arm wrapped around him. Remus never wanted to look weak or ill (though he usually did, at least a little bit), especially around the full moon. He was worried that if he looked awful enough often enough, people might become suspicious and try to figure out what was wrong with him. That would only make him feel worse.

Before dropping Remus off at the infirmary, Sirius pulled him into an empty classroom.

“What’s this?” Remus asked, raising an eyebrow.

“This is me thanking you for an incredible day.” Sirius smiled. “I wouldn’t have wanted to spend it with anyone else.”

Remus wrapped his arms around Sirius’ neck and pulled him into a hug. “I’m the one who should be thanking you. I just - thank you, Pads. For everything.”

They stayed like that for a little while, quietly holding each other until Remus had to go. They kissed, just once, before he left. It was soft, and gentle, and perfect. Sirius promised to go down to the infirmary to see Remus first thing tomorrow morning, and Remus kissed him on the cheek. Sirius could see the pain in Remus’ eyes, and was glad that he, James, and Peter would be able to help him through tonight.

He would ask the other two marauders to let him see Remus alone the next morning. They would understand. He knew they would.

Sirius watched Remus enter the infirmary from his hiding place down the hall from it. He watched as Madame Pomfrey led him outside to where he knew the Whomping Willow was. He watched Remus’ pale face lose its mask of “I’m fine” and “it doesn’t hurt” just for a moment, when he thought no one could see him. But Sirius could, and that look killed him a little inside.

Sirius hurried back to Gryffindor Tower, his lips still tingling from Remus’ kiss, where he would meet his friends and then the three would head down to the Shrieking Shack. This would be a long night for Remus. Sirius was glad that he wouldn’t have to spend it alone.
