How anyone thinks this guy was trying to save everyone in the killing game confounds me.

Because this little asshole is the kid on the playground who has an invisible shield that blocks all attacks, and a magic flamethrower that does a bazillion damage.

He's got the same mentality as the Riddler. He wants to win and be proven the smartest guy at any give moment, especially in the eyes of the local detective, and the mastermind calling the shots. Even though he has very little skill to back that up, besides smack talk and bouts of wit.

My interpretation of Kokichi is that he, like everyone is, is in fact a child. Unlike most though, he's a child who isn't taking the game seriously. And that tends to lead to problems.
