And I was always frightened by the idea of ​​writing in a book, I thought it was because of my upbringing and culture of the older school. And then I realized for myself that every time I read, my thoughts are supplemented, varied,They branch out endlessly or have a completely different take on the same story, and there simply isn’t enough space between the lines for me to fit it all in.Now I put thin leaves in the book, written with different thoughts, like a mini-bookmark to the chapters, a little reminder of that version of myself and that view of the world.

Writing in books can so intimidating I know! Especially when it was reading for school, cuz in my school we woukd borrow books from the library, so I couldn't write even if I wanted to. But also it wasn't a thing in my family either, and my older brother was very protective of the condition of the books we had at home.

So writing in books also felt intimidating cuz of upbringings as well!

A bit over two years ago when I'd picked up some books (The Love Hypothesis, The Cruel Prince and A River Enchanted) that I'd wanted to annotate, I was so focused on writing cute little notes and making sure my handwriting was neat and my lines weren't too wobbly and all. And that's all fun and stuff but also it made it feel like a task? If that makes sense? Like I'd read, I was enjoying reading and the characters and the story, but I also felt the need to write something on every page. Something smart or funny or just idk cool.

I guess it was mainly cuz of seeing many people share how pretty and expansive their annotated pages were that I started pressuring myself to make sure my annotations were cute?

Then came Six of Crows. The book I'd bought was the Collector's edition, and I really didn't want to write in it at first.

But after the first few pages I started writing some small, very small, thoughts and reactions with a light pencil, and hoghlighting quotes I liked.

Didn't force it. Just underlined a sentence here and there and wrote stuff like "lol" , "damn" , "wtf" etc.

And I guess it broke that mental barrier for me? Cuz now the thing I love most about annotations is the fact they are a a small journal of my own thoughts in the margins. When I re-read a book, it's fun to see what I was thinking then, or sometimes the jokes I'd cracked between the lines. I genuinely had moments during rereads where I was like "omg past me was onto something!" Or laughed at a "come fight me bruh let's duke it out" that I left after someone's dumbass line.

They aren't meant for other people. They are just little thoughts from me to me.

They are meant to be understood by me if I were to look back on them. To give me a glimpse into the headspace and thoughts and theories I had on my previous read

And I found that after that, whenever I did make more expansive annotations, I could enjoy them a lot more, pull out my post its and tabs and go all out with the small essays lmao

But I didn't force it, it didn't feel like a mental task. I didn't feel like every written thought had to be an enlighting take or amazing analysis.

So in some books I still found it fun to be more loose with them (We Hunt The Flame, Before the Coffee Gets Cold, The Folk of Air series) where sometimes pages and chapters went by with nothing more than a word here and there, while in others, I found it more enjoyable to dissect the details and put my takes on paper. Not because I felt the need to have smart annotations, but cuz I genuinely wanted to write down thoughts and explanations and ideas, because there were many things going on in my head as I'd read and I really wanted to capture those as I went on (Pride and Prejudice, If We Were Villains, Vicious)

jimin in growing pains is so incredibly hot, but oc in the wake of your leave? that's a whole different story. her determination and drive is so attractive. the way she behaves is so cool. I love oc. if I were her, I'd never really come back, but she's so strong-willed and determined. role-model worthy, I tell you. and the way you made us FEEL the angst, heartbreak and the yearning-to-be-understood that the oc went through was just 😩🤌. fucking amazing, I swear. I rarely find fanfics or even books with such badass female ocs, and this is the perfect cup of tea for me, I didn't even realize i needed to read about a character like this.

I wouldn't say it's really E2L, for jimin and oc, but I get the tension between them, and their past. it's so.. how do I say it, full of tension. they way you described e2l from your reply on my latest ask would be fitting in their situation (given that there's a happy ending). i am loving this.

- dark romance books aren't everybody's cup of tea, the topic can be a bit heavy at times, because there can be a LOT of triggering stuff. fantasy's really fun to read tho, I loved almost every fantasy book I've come across.

- omg you have the whole shatter me series?? you should read it as soon as u can, it's actually good. i actually finished the first book of the series, you might not like the writing style, but that's what it's like inside the character's head, how she's thinking.

- the invisible life of addie larue is just on a different level than other books (at least for me). the way it's written? poetry. magical. amazing. I loved it. the plot? so intriguing i had to take breaks to take everything in. and the smut wasn't really smut, ik, but the way it focused on her emotions and the things she felt. loved it. bc you see a lot of authors write smut but some are just.... luc I found frustrating, but I can't blame you for liking him. he IS hot and attractive, the way he acts. and Six of Crows is actually on my tbr!!

- my book bf? have a few, but def cardan (cruel prince series). loved him in wicked king, but at the last scene tho... anyways he owns my heart.

- I'm really not a fan of colleen hoover either lmao. read it ends with us and was majorly disappointed with the writing style. you write so much better. idk the hype any her tho. and please I beg of you, if you don't want to come across really really really bad smut and an even worse plot, no development for an imp character, do not even TOUCH the sequel. traumatized me fr. but did u hear abt her wanting to turn the iewu book into a coloring book 💀 like what are we gonna color 💀 the stairs or ryle's fits of rage that didn't end well 💀. also have you heard of the movie adaptation?

- I actually haven't finished any Emily Henry book 😅, but I started/am almost through a few, book lovers, beach read, people we meet on vacation. love her writing.

- I think I prefer a series over a stand-alone. because it has more depth and keeps me busy for a long time (I get bored very easily). but when I just want to read to get my mind of something, I go for stand-alones, when I don't have enough time. what about you? which do u prefer, or does it depend?

-still waiting on the next part of the jimin mafia series tho, it was so good, I will wait forever if that's the time you need, can't imagine drifting away from the series, I keep rereading it!!

Yo! Firstly, thank you so much for your kind words about Growing Pains and In The Wake Of Your Leave, it made me smile. I'm diligently working on the subsequent parts and let me tell you, there's lots more angst to come. Hopefully it'll be out in the not too distant future!! I am a little worry my 'twist' is going to upset some people, but you can't please everyone. I tried to make her as strong willed and someone who doesn't need anyone else as possible, so I'm happy that came across.

Oh yeah Carden as a book bf is a good choice. He was a bit rough in the first book, but he redeems himself.

Ah I'm so glad you're also not a fan of Colleen. Not that there's anything wrong with liking her stories but sometimes I feel alone in not enjoying her stuff. looool your comment about the colouring book had me creasing. I have heard about the movie, they have Blake Lively playing the main character? I'll be interested to see how they make the film.

Oh yeah, I do love a series and getting attached to characters and learning more and more about them. But I do also find stand alone books quicker and easier sometimes. It's a tough one because sometimes I want to learn more about characters and I get upset when a book is over but then with series I can find I get too much and I get bored or tired of the characters. Guess it ultimately depends on the writing and whether it's good and keeps me interested.

I tend to only read one book at a time, mainly because I know I'll favour one over the other and the one will go forgotten. I'm not one for DNF'ing, I try and push through no matter what. What's your preference?

I've just finished Icebreaker. Have you read it? I kind of loved it, kind of hated it. lol. I don't want to spoil anything and I would say it's worth a read if the synopsis appeals to you. I'm now onto Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Only 50ish pages in but I'm loving it. Can see why people rave about it. What are you reading atm?

My tbr is never ending. I am one of these people that views buying books as a hobby in itself, which is not good for my bank balance. I can always see my mum side-eyeing me when I tell her about another book I've bought. Some books on there that I'm excited about are The Kingdom of the Wicked series - I've read books 1 & 2 and I have book 3, might re-read from the start when I come back to it. Half a Soul. The Roughest Draft. A River Enchanted. And I've read Things We Never Got Over and though it wasn't my favourite I do want to read the next one in the 'series'. Have you read any of these? Or anything you think I should be adding?

I've always kind of being into reading, I used to love Twilight and The Hunger Games at school. When I went to uni I didn't read much, I think because I was having to read so much academic stuff the last thing I wanted to do was read in my spare time. It was the pandemic that got me back into reading again. All that time and nothing to do! Was there a specific book or thing in your life that got you into reading?

How do I write so well 😂 Thank you, I'm happy you think I do. Honestly, I don't know. There's lots of things I'm proud of when I read back but I've written but I also think I sometimes go into too much detail and it gets a bit boring. What I'm trying to say is I tend to think up ideas and then just write and hope for the best. I do honestly think reading a lot helps too, seeing writing styles I like and don't like and different ways of plotting a story. Do you write or are you interested in it?

I read both physical and digital books. I prefer paperbacks because they're lighter and I love holding an actual book, but I also have a kindle which is great for holidays. I've never really read pdfs or epub books, do you recommend? Where/what do you read them on?

The boys have been killing us with content recently!! Jimins online fansign!!!! I mean imagine! I can't even imagine what I'd say. I mean I don't speak Korean so I would feel awkward/bad about that. I'd probably plan for ages, stressing about what to say and then not be able to get a word out in the minute I have with him and regret it forever. But, we can dream right - think that's why I write fanfics, just trying to put out into the world everything I know I would never actually do but wish I could.

Book Recommendations (1)

Lost in the Sun by Lisa Graff

Summary:  “ Everyone says that middle school is awful, but Trent knows nothing could be worse than the year he had in fifth grade, when a freak accident on Cedar Lake left one kid dead, and Trent with a brain full of terrible thoughts he can't get rid of. Trent wants middle school to be a fresh start, if only he could make that happen. Even in baseball, when a fly ball gets lost in the sun, you have to remember to shift your position to find it.”

Personal thoughts: It’s definitely a book geared to more younger audiences, but I think it’s a good read for all ages. I actually haven’t read it in a while, but Trent is a character I think lots of people can relate to. He struggles with anger and rage; emotions he has no idea what to do with. Fallon is a quirky character that you can never quite get a hold of, and she makes for a spectacular story. 

Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman

Summary:  “ A half-Japanese teen grapples with social anxiety and her narcissist mother in the wake of a crushing rejection from art school in this debut novel. Kiko has always struggled with saying what she’s thinking, and an overbearing mother makes things even harder. Her one hope and dream is Prism, a fancy art school. But then Kiko doesn’t get into Prism, at the same time her abusive uncle moves back in with her family. So when she receives an invitation from her childhood friend to leave her small town and tour art schools on the west coast, Kiko jumps at the opportunity in spite of the anxieties and fears that attempt to hold her back. And now that she is finally free to be her own person outside the constricting walls of her home life, Kiko learns life-changing truths about herself, her past, and how to be brave.”

Personal thoughts: ‘Starfish’ is a book that touches on a lot of sensitive issues, such as emotional and verbal abuse, presumed sexual assault (my memory isn’t that clear on what exactly happened so djkadhf), and Kiko herself is a very complex character. She’s a survivor who has to face every survivor’s worst fear; the abuser returning. Art is her only escape, but when that too fails, she feels like she’s spiraling. On many levels, she’s a character so many people can connect to, and the story really shows the reality of life. 

Turtles All the Way Down by John Greene

Summary:  “ Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis. Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.”

Personal thoughts: You’ve probably either read or heard of this book, but if you haven’t yet, this is a definite book you should read. Aza is really an intriguing character, and one of the things I like about her is that she doesn’t really get a happy ending. The book is her trying (and sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing) to find a way to cope with her disorder. It’s a really deep book (lots and lots of good quality quotes). It’s not supposed to be a positive or negative book; it shows the real struggles of dealing with mental illnesses and trying to balance your normal life along with it.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Summary:  “Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price–and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone…A convict with a thirst for revenge. A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager. A runaway with a privileged past. A spy known as the Wraith. A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums. A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes. Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first.”

Personal thoughts: This book is genius. It’s part of a duo-logy, and is set in the same universe as the author’s Grisha trilogy. In my opinion, you don’t have to read the Grisha trilogy (I didn’t), though it would probably be helpful. You’re able to figure things out pretty quickly though. I’m serious about this book being spectacular though; it’s one of those books where the main character is so clever that you wonder how the author possibly wrote them. Kaz is a trickster and a conman, and makes the book filled with twists and turns that leave you shocked. The other five main characters will grab your heart just as much though; wily and clever and heart wrenching with every page and every new thing you learn. It leaves you holding your breath-but don’t hold it for too long, because there is a sequel, Crooked Kingdom (I...sobbed).

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Summary:   “Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King. To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences. As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.”

Personal thoughts: For once, we meet a main character as twisted and cutthroat as the ‘villain’-who also happens to be the love interest, if you can call them that. Jude is vicious and bitter after surviving for years as a human in Faerie. The Fey are cruel, tricky, deceptive, especially towards her. This whole book was just awesome, really, but in a dark way. Jude goes past just trying to save herself; and in turn endangers so many people.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvator

Summary:   “An unlikely group stumbles across ancient magic in Virginia: Blue, the daughter of the town psychic in Henrietta, Virginia, who has been told for as long as she can remember that if she ever kisses her true love, he will die. Gansey, who seeks the Welsh magic he believes saved his life. Adam, who searches for a way out of the circumstances he was born into. Ronan, who seeks to recover the magic of his childhood.”

Personal thoughts: Another series I give my heart too. The first book in The Raven Cycle series, this book is rich with mythology set in a realistic world. Rich boys with backstories, headstrong girl with physic abilities, ley lines-what could go wrong? It’s a story about youth, mystery, romance, friendship, fantasy-a little bit of everything thrown in between. Each character is unique, from your perfect rich boy Gansey to scholarly Adam, cold Ronan and spunky Blue. Even if the book doesn’t sound exciting, I can guarantee that you’ll probably be completely absorbed in one way or another. 

Conviction by Kelly Loy Gilbert

Summary:   “Ten years ago, God gave Braden a sign, a promise that his family wouldn’t fall apart the way he feared. Personal thoughts: Honestly, this is a book I can reread over and over again. Maybe because it’s a book that focuses on Braden’s faith and his struggle as one of the main topics, but it really pulled me in. I practically devoured this whole book in one day. Braden really struggles internally on what is the right thing to do, as well as externally when his brother, Trey, returns to be his guardian. It focuses a lot on their brotherly relationship-in which of them have two very different perspectives of what their lives have been like-some romance, but mostly it’s a book about Braden himself. When the line between right and wrong is blurred, what path do you choose?

1. What is your favourite book and/or book series of all time?

Ummmm..... Honestly? As much as I’d love to answer the first f*cking question I really just can’t because hi, I love way too many books to have a favorite m’kay?

2. What is the longest book you have ever read? How many pages?

Okay, probably... High 500′s-Low 600′s? I mainly read YA novels so I mean... Yeah, nothing too long or too profound I guess.

3. What is the oldest book you have ever read? (Based on its written date)

Honestly- Ummmm... Probably some school mandated book that I had to spend way too long analyzing because ya know gotta love the curriculum man but yeah, probably, “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” by Zora Neale Hurston.

4. What is a book series that everyone else loves but you do not?

Okay, getting into some shade now. Um... I remember when like, the matched series was so hyped up and I just... Didn’t like it too much? The selection series wasn’t too amazing or anything either but I mean that’s just my opinion. Props to you if you loved that book.

5. What book or book series would you like to see turned into a film/ TV series?

Okay, House of Night as a TV series would be so good, just... Yes.

6. What is your favourite stand-alone book?

Probably... Ooo this is a good one. My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick is pretty good, it’s also the first one to come to mind so we’ll go with that for right now.

7. What is a book that you feel glad for not reading?

Honestly? Fifty Shades of Gray can stay FAR away from my ever growing TBR pile

8. What is a book that you feel guilty for not not reading?

... The 50 books that are on my TBR pile that I just haven’t gotten to yet.

Ummm... A majority of the books I read are set in the United States so heck yeah man. For an example... I guess I could say the majority of the Mortal Instruments series?

11. What horror book made you really scared?

Hm... I don’t read horror all too often but The murder Complex by Lindsey Cummings was pretty unsettling?

OkAy. There’s one book I just... I couldn’t get through without feeling... entirely disgusted. It was... I believe it was... Yeah! All the Rage by Courtney Summers. It was just... So graphic and I suppose the things depicted in the book were too inaccurate and played off for me. It upset me in ways I don’t really like discussing, so I’d just... Yeah I’d say that’s probably the book I hate the most.

13. What is the biggest book series you have read? How many books are in it?

Okay. Here’s the tea. I suck at reading series. I’m currently reading House of Night and Throne of Glass but I mean.... They’re both on my TBR right now since I’m rereading the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout so I mean... I guess the longest series that I’ve finished is The Mortal Instruments Series WhOoPs.

14. What book gives you happy memories?

Okay, this is an amazing question. It’d have to be... Hm... Okay, Unenchanted by Chanda Hahn. I don’t have the slightest clue why, I guess it’s a book I read during a hard time in my life and it was just so sweet and pure and wholesome and just thinking about it and reminicing gives me warm, fuzzy feelings.

15. What book made you cry?

WhAt bOoK hAsn’T?!?! Um... I guess in all seriousness though... Okay, avoding the basic answer of, “ALLIGENT” I’m gonna go with... Okay Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge. That book is definitely one of my favorites 10/10 would recommend it’s gr8

Hm... The Vampire Academy series overall is pretty funny, Rose is a riot.

Y’all. Listen. I’m gay as f*ck. My boyfriend is great just a subtle PDA because I so love that man. But um... okay The Mortal Instruments series again but not because Alec because f*ck Alec. Magnus Bane is my spirit animal.

Good. Question. Ummm.... Hatchet! by Gary Paulsen, hell yeah. I didz it.

Um... Manual wise? Like $70, but book book? Maybe $40 on a pre-ordered, signed, hardcover...

Mortal Instruments! I’ll admit it! It was still fucking better than the movie, fight me. Books are 99.99999% of the time always better.

Honestly? I have so many books on my TBR and I’m so excited for all of them.

Twilight. Enough said. Don’t @ me

Nope! I’m not bilingual but I’m learning German because yes.

The Infernal Devices Trilogy, mmm yes feed my soul with perfection.

Um... Thirteen Reasons Why was offensive for five billion reasons tbh.

40. What is the weirdest book you have read?

OOOOOOOOH okay, honestly? Charming by Krystal Wade was pretty weird.

MMM I’ve read a bit of Six of Crows and it’s pretty good but idk, that’s probably it tbh.

... The Infernal Devices.

The thousandth floor.... Don’t judge me.

ALL THE TEA IN THE WORLD, but I think any book that has a Movie Tie in Cover just automatically is unattractive... My bad.

I don’t! But I do want to start exploring books written in Verse

Hm... No... But now I want some...

I don’t think so? But the “And I Darken” series has been calling my name for a while so...

48. What book made you angry?

Honestly? The last book of the Divergent series. It was just.. No. It was a let down. And I loved that series with my whole heart.

49. What book has inspired you?

Hm... probably... in all seriousness? It’d probably have to be the shadow falls series. I can’t explain why but... It helped me keep going and pushing forward.

50. What book got you into reading?

Definintely The Mortal Instruments Series. No doubt about it.
