Teddy
Teddy was visited today
Most of our followers remember Teddy and Moses, the two young children who had a house falling down, no parents, and were not in school. I will post a memory photo of them from 2020. Today Pascal visited them. The young boy, Moses is in eastern Uganda with his grandmother and going to school. He comes home during holidays. Teddy remains in Kyankwanzi with her aunt and still walks long distances…

“Hi this is Meredith Haberfeld I am an executive coach who works with individual, executives, groups and companies to increase performance, effectiveness and results.
It's often asked how important is it to be visible in your company especially in the time of an economic downturn?”
In fact common wisdom says keep your head down and stay under the radar in economic downturns and I actually recommend quite the opposite. I recommend you work your tail off but make your successes and results visible, not empty results but find those things that you're working on and highlight them, showcase them. There are a few different elements that I'd include as key ways to secure your position in the workplace: One is operate like an owner and that has a few different elements:
Find ways to contribute to the bottom line whatever position you're in in the company. Whether you are a senior executive or an administrative assistant, find ways that you can contribute now to the bottom line of the company; that is the lifeblood of the place you're at.
The second thing is create a business plan for yourself just like you were the owner. That business plan should be a yearly plan with what you're going to accomplish inside your role in that time with quarterly benchmarks, specific deliverables, action items to get there and then measure your progress over time and the amount of integrity you have to that plan makes all the difference. When you're working to suit someone else's needs and goals you'll give a certain amount but when you work to meet the deadlines, goals, benchmarks, and intentions you set for yourself and then meet them no matter what hurdles you have to get over, all of a sudden things start looking very different in your domain whether you're at the most senior level or the most junior.
One of the most effective things I see people do and have people do in my work with them is get out of their box and create relationships. Pick up the phone, ask people in your company to go for a coffee, to have lunch, ask people outside your company with but within your industry, go to networking events; the more inclusive you get and connected to people in your company and in your industry the more foundation you have for your career. Not just the immediate although that's true but also for the long term.”

Hailing from Kansas City! We’re over 60% to goal! Please keep the donations coming! Remember, I’m pole dancing across the U.S. to raise $1,000 for Ugandan refugees! . Now let’s talk about clean water. Uganda’s health care performance is ranked as one of the worst in the world by the World Health Organization (WHO). Uganda is ranked 186th out of 191 nations. . According to the WHO report, sub-Saharan has 24 percent of the global disease burden but only three percent of the health care workforce worldwide and one percent of the global health expenditure. . The good news is that Think Humanity is changing all this by providing wells. The wells we are constructing are located in the villages where water is most needed. . Based on current exchange rates, Think Humanity can construct most wells for $3,000 and repair boreholes for $900 each. . Can you help?! Even $5 makes a difference. How emphasizing and considering your team’s perspective can foster better employee engagement and better understand what they are going through so you could be in a position to help.
The importance of giving credit and acknowledging employee achievements when the job’s done.
Why as a leader it’s your responsibility to take the blame for mistakes.
As you continue evolving as a leader you will discover how crucial the role of good communication can be for your and your team’s performance. To help make sure you are getting your message across and are getting the results you want from your staff here are some tips from leadership training professional and CEO of ThinkHuman Meredith Haberfeld in an interview she did with Fox News for you to enjoy and take with you:
youtube
Video Transcript
“Whether you're working in a team or on your own good communication is critical so to ensure everything is running smoothly and to your advantage here are a few key tips to help you master the art of communication in the office”
“Make sure goals and accountabilities are clear. Take the time to outline very specifically with your boss, what you're accountable for and the results expected of you and encourage that this process is done with everyone on your team.”
“As soon as you see that a deadline might be slipping or a breakdown happening don't wait. Communicate that problem as quickly as you see it. It's recognized as a sign of leadership.”
“Talk through complaints and upsets with the appropriate person. If there's a clash in the office or someone you're upset with, instead of speaking with someone else about it address it with that person directly.”
“Be interested in perspectives other than your own. A huge part of communication is listening, be open to what other people think. When you start a conversation, especially a difficult one remind yourself to listen, not just communicate your point or defend your point of view.”
“I'm Meredith Haberfeld thanks for watching.”

Updater Has a Brand-New HQ! See It Here First
Updater has grown a lot in the past year. In 2016 alone, we nearly doubled the size of our team - from 25 to just shy of 50 employees. Our office was filled to the brim. Take a look:
That's why we spent 12 weeks this fall building out a custom penthouse loft with sweeping views of Union Square Park in New York City. It was time for a new HQ for our growing team. From the raw shell of a space that - formerly home to Pandora - we chose everything from where the walls should be to the style of the keg tap handles (undoubtedly one of our favorite decisions to make). People have asked us why we spent so much time building out an entirely personalized office, and our response is always: people first. Our team comes first, and they deserve a work environment that inspires collaboration and creativity.
One of the many views from our new HQ.
A look at Updater's new HQ

You can see more photos and check out our incredible time-lapse videos of the buildout and our custom-made mural right here.
What our team values
We started the buildout process by asking our team what they valued in a new office. With responses all over the board (seriously... everything from quiet nap lounges to top-of-the-line video conferencing solutions to a double rainbow maker), we narrowed it down to a few core ideals:
Flexibility. People wanted the flexibility to work sitting or standing. So we bought Herman Miller desks that electronically raise and lower. People wanted greater flexibility when it comes to working from home, so our entire remote team received a stipend to improve their home offices. People wanted the flexibility to meet whenever and wherever, so we quadrupled the number of conference rooms and built them in a variety of shapes and sizes.
The tools needed to get the job done. This includes new monitors for our engineers, incredible video conferencing software (so that every meeting with a remote teammate can be done face to face), easy access to a metrics dashboard with over a dozen TVs across the space, and a huge upgrade in physical space - giving us each additional breathing room.
Professional development. Millennials make up a large portion of our team, making it crucial for us to have advancement, learning, and growth opportunities available. As a metaphorical welcome to the new office, we hosted a DiSC "Flex Your Style" session with ThinkHuman. It was great to see where we fall on the various spectrums and to learn how to better communicate with one another in our new space.
It's a new year and a new Updater, and we're all excited to see what the future holds!
New hood, new hoodie!

Unfortunately, due to car issues, we won’t make it into Lawrence until 10:30pm tonight. We’ll still try to get our pole dance in, but if not, here’s tomorrow’s updated, very detailed schedule. 😉 . . . #poledance #fundraiser #poledancing #unitedbypole #uganda #refugees #helprefugees #thinkhumanity #polefit #polefitness #polelife
