#things i wish i'd known

It's been a year now since I started my first job (and moved to a second one) and I want to share some of the things with yall

Interviews are a two way street. They are seeing if they like you. But you need to decide if you like them. Ask questions and don't be afraid to listen to your gut.

There are two types of questions you should ask at an interview: to get more knowledge about the company, and to make yourself look good. The ones that make you look good are more important.

Buy a notebook. Make notes every day. You'll thank me.

Manage your pain. Take the god damn painkiller.

Set "yes but" goals. "This is my goal for this period of time but if something happens I will do this instead." " This is my goal for the year but if something happens before then I'll do this."

Don't be afraid to leave. Seriously. It's not worth it.

If they say they want to extend your probation period/training period, start looking for another job. They might be doing you a kindness and actually mean to help you, but if they're not and are only trying to cover their own skin you want to get out of there before they hurt you.

There will always be people who cannot admit fault and or will try to blame you for things you haven't done. Handle it however you please but accept that this is a universal truth.

Your colleagues are not your friends. They may become friends in time, but they are your colleagues first. Remember this. It may protect you one day.

"if you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life" is mostly true. It should still feel like work, but if you can find a job that you love, don't waste it. Your lucky.

If you stop loving it, it's a sign of a bigger problem.

If you stop doing the things you love because work has made you mentally/emotionally/physically incapable, don't be afraid to reassess.

If your place of work doesn't have a wellbeing and or disability support system, it's not for you. Even if you're able bodied, neural typical, and in peak mental and physical health.

Be a team player, but not at the expense of yourself.

You can be professional and still be the little freak that you really are. Just remembered when to wear which face, ok?

Eat some fucking fruit.

Work is just work. If you find it fulfilling, fantastic. But you need more that just work. Friends, family, hobby's, join a club, get a pet, start a project, take a class, go to the theatre, bake a cake, anything. But have something

Never stop learning. Either on the job or outside of it. But especially on the job. If your place of employment won't encourage you to keep learning and progressing, find a new job.

Comfortable, practical shoes. That is all.

Health and safety is your friend. I know. Everyone's least favourite department. But they are there to protect you. Go to them if you have concerns. If you don't have a h&s department and or your concerns are ignored, leave. No job is worth your life.

While I'm out here dropping unasked-for advice, another one:

Teach yourself how to feel proud of other people instead of disappointed in yourself. It seems like such a small brain shake-up, but learning how to be excited for other people's successes is so much healthier than berating yourself for being "behind" or "failing" in comparison.

ace's death might be the biggest thing fans regularly retcon in op fanworks and that's probably because ace is one of the most loved characters in the whole series but i was thinking that a huge part of why people can't just accept that it was a necessary evil and move on is that ace died without ever knowing sabo was alive and sabo got his memories back only after it was too late to do anything about them re: ace. by people I mean me. I find that unacceptable.

You know, looking at a diet soda can it occurs to me that it might not be so wretched to me if the cans weren't so unpleasant

Like we know that things like color play a role in how our brain perceives things, and I realized looking at the can that they're always this bland but at the same time nasty looking silver and it just... it looks foul and I think that compounds with the fact that I also just plain don't like diet soda

My point here isn't to say anyone else shouldn't like diet soda, just how I never realized how much of an impact the can has on me not liking it... there's just something offputting about it to me

idk who needs to hear it this pride but nail polish doesn't stick to skin that long. You'll get a better finish if you wipe the excess off the brush before painting (and do 2-3 coats if you have to) but it literally doesn't matter if you glob it all over your fingers. As long as you put it on the day before, this is one task where missing out on learning it as a kid is inconsequential

Was nobody going to tell me the most visually distressing cartoon ever made has audio description?! I had hopes that since Amazon was doing Hazbin Hotel we might get one and we have one, but how does anyone get hold of the audio description for Helluva Boss that apparently exists?! Well, it exists for season one and I have the mp3 files only version, but I'm still up a creek on finishing season 2 without having any way to find an audio description (if there is one).

no what I think the thing is is there is so much very visceral violent imagery for Benze and Crab. a FOUNDATION of their relationship is that Benze unintentionally causes pain when he's checking out Crab's months-old injury. do you trust me. and Crab doesn't realize how difficult words and touch can be for Benze and unintentionally causes pain that way before they start to figure things out. I wish we could talk. I wish I'd known you before. they're so so drawn to each other from the get go but there are so many barriers they have to get through, of pain (physical and emotional) they have to work to try and ease, mistrust and miscommunication. it's like that blood transfusion post. it isn't compatible with how much the love each other. I'd give you my very blood but it would kill you. it's better to let it bleed out. you can only survive without me. there's so much capacity for pain and hurt, but they choose to love instead.

when me and my brother were younger and on better terms (i wouldve been 7-8) our bedrooms used to be directly across from eachother and when it was bed time we would play "dream game" for several hours which was basically text roleplay if two children were shouting the responses across the room at each other. my favorite setting was "pokemon characters stranded on a raft trying to kill eachother"

finally swallowed my pride and checked the dark souls wiki and apparently you're not supposed to fight the bridge dragon? apparently it's insanely difficult and overpowered for the player's level even by the standards of dark souls? i thought i just sucked lol.
