they are barring wikipedia. they are barring spotify. they are barring important news - both national news and world news. they are barring mental health forums and LGBTQ related things and so much more. this is not about protecting children, it has never been about protecting children.
the online safety act is an insane privacy breach, and if that does not scare you then you need to think harder about it. it is going to end up in a massive data leak - all the information is getting collected by random third party systems. can we trust them? no. can we even hold them accountable? no. because the government couldn’t even make their own system to do these age checks.
and i hear you - it is important that kids don’t see porn. but even if all this was about protecting kids, it’s sloppy and useless. it’s easy (for now) to get around with a vpn and the only thing the act doing is censoring things that it shouldnt. if the government wanted to protect kids, they would do something concrete about it - they would be putting more funding into education, for example.
of course the policy isnt called “national surveillance”. they’re not going to call it that. everything will be hidden behind things that people want.
so email your MP, and tell other people that this is WAY more than blocking porn from children - this is the first step towards national surveillance.

I understand it’s difficult to be a parent but it’s time we start telling parents bluntly it’s not the internet responsibility to keep your child safe it’s your responsibility to keep your child safe on the internet

My vampires CAN walk into the sunlight but doing so would reveal what they would look like if they aged normally
Younger vampires don’t have much to worry about but older vamps have reason to avoid sunlight as they age. They are still immortal, but their aged, sunlit selves are significantly weaker than their non-sunlit forms. Vamps over 100 years old run the risk of crumpling over, fully immobile, but still conscious

Wildest thing to me about the online safety act is that parental controls already exist on every device. Like my mp3 player has a parental controls option. Like why should i have to give up my privacy and risk my data being leaked because some people cant be bothered to check that their kids are safe online

obscene publications act 🤝 malicious communications act 🤝 online safety act
holy trinity of dogshit, puritanical, easily wilfully misinterpreted british laws that give the government and law enforcement a blank cheque to shut down peaceful protest, freedom of expression, right to privacy, i could go on

people are clowning on this guy on reddit but uhhh let's pause for a minute and ask...so what happens if someone has a skin condition? what if part of their face has been burned? what if they're missing their eyes? and so what if they just have a fuckton of tattoos? recognition algorithms are aligned with the most ""average"" / ""normal"" features which means any deviation gets denied access to shit we didnt need age verification for 1 year ago. i dont care if it's a choice versus not, dont care if it's accessing porn or wikipedia, this needs to stop

Email your MPs!
Guy's I've been emailing my MP for the past couple of days detailing my concerns over the Online safety Act implementation and he said he's sending it over (with my censent) to the Ministers of the department of science, innovation and technology!
Keep the pressure up! Let them know we won't stant for it, make it clear there are many risks towards the safety of UK citizens!
If you don't know your MP heres a way to find out: https://members.parliament.uk/FindYourMP
If you don't know what to write about heres a couple of risks I wrote about;
Data leaks of UK citizens government ID and personal data
Unsafety of sending personal data to an american site that can't be fully held accountable if things go wrong
Potential malicious intent of these companies collecting data
Scammers using ID verification to trick people into sending their ID's straight to them for identity fruad.
Predatory or other online criminals using someone else's ID to commit crimes potentially leading to wrongful convictions.
Mass censorship by many sites, censorship of content relating to LGBT+ topics, mental health help, addiction recovery, abuse help, mature topics on wikipedia, news censorship of protests/conflicts in other/our own country.
The potential for censorship by future governments of whatever they deem as 'immoral'. Potentially leading to censorship of vital information for people.
Can be considered a violation of our rights to privacy, freedom of expression and the freedom of the press (reasons above)
(It's also probably good to make it clear you don't want kids to see adult stuff but that this isn't the way to go)
Of course if you haven't already sign the petition! (only if you live in the UK), we're almost at half a million! https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/722903

i like working at plant store. sometimes you ring up someone and there's a slug on their plant and so you're like "Oh haha you've got a friend there let me get that for you" and you put the slug on your hand for safekeeping but then its really busy and you dont have time to take the slug outside before the next customer in line so you just have a slug chilling on your hand for 15 minutes. really makes you feel at peace with nature. also it means sometimes i get to say my favorite line which is "would you like this free slug with your purchase"

one of the most challenging skills i've had to learn as an adult is the art of figuring out whether i'm proportionally annoyed with someone or just tired and overstimulated and looking for reasons to be pissed off

Every day I daydream of a book-accurate Dracula adaptation, and every day I come to the conclusion that Quincey Morris should be the group's fanservice and show off his big manly pectorals while Jonathan has a Thousand Yard Stare for 2/3s of the movie.

There is literally no circumstance where I support age verification to access a website. As I've said before I'm very much the "there's nuance here" person on almost everything but on this issue there's no nuance for me, it's awful and horrible in and of itself and it also sets an awful and horrible precedent

i think the reason why i still to this day find coldflash so compelling is that len is the only person who takes barry seriously. pre-flash, barry built his entire life around people not taking what he saw the night his mother died seriously, and post-flash everyone around him isn't taking his powers and what he can do/how he feels about them seriously. and barry is sooo angry about it, there's rage simmering just below the surface all of season one, and no one takes that anger seriously, either. no one except for leonard snart, who takes everything barry is seriously from the jump. and sure that manifests as i have GOT to fucking kill this guy but len's eventual begrudging respect of barry is rooted in that seriousness. he looks at barry's anger and instead of going noooo you're the special birthday boy and you'd never do anything wrong ever he calls barry out on it. where everyone else was like yes barry keep those people in an extrajudicial prison in your basement your intentions are good so it's fine len is like oh you're so angry at these people you're denying them their rights as human beings? fair but also fucked up i'm forcing you to look inward. theirs is the most interesting dynamic to me because no one takes the darkness in barry seriously and no one takes the goodness in leonard seriously and they're both sooooo pissed off that the most annoying guy in the world is the one exception.
