Since you write for multiple Choices stories, I'm curious: (how) do they all intertwine? Do your various MCs know each other? How do they get along? How did they meet? If any of your stories don't exist in the same universe, how would the characters get along if they did?

they do all intertwine, but in some places what's 'canon' and what isn't gets a little muddy. like for example, for me both RCD and HWU are equally canon, but its impossible for them to both exist in the same timeline, but that doesn't mean that there isn't connections that happen in both versions. Simon is Hunt's nephew in both RCD and HWU, but how he met Avalon is different because how Hunt met Avalon is different. and that's not even touching on all of the different versions for It Lives I have, and how those different endings would change how It Lives connects to all of the other stories. plus also: all of my sillies fun aus (which i will not talk about here at risk of this post going wayyy too long)

Simon

anyway since i mentioned Simon by name I'm gonna start with him. im ignoring choices HSS for him & his friends, bc i don't like that it kind of retcons some of HSS prime + makes all of the original friend group just People Who Go To School Together And Barely Interact.

obviously, he is Thomas' nephew, his dad is Thomas' older brother. they're very close, Thomas is his favorite uncle & he's very supportive with Simon figuring out his gender stuff. in fact, he's the person who buys Simon his first suit and the person who helps Simon find a good surgeon for his top surgery, as Thomas himself had issues with his own and didn't want Simon to experience the same things he did (more on this later)

in the HWU world, Simon meets Avalon over his spring break, which he used to sit in on a few classes of Thomas' classes. they know who each other are in really simple terms, just "there's that tall guy from that one class Thomas teaches, he sure is a nice dude :)" "oh, there's that high schooler who's sitting in on classes that Ethan wants to be the agent of. i hope he doesn't feel too pressured to make a decision right now, he's still got plenty of time to figure things out". they do eventually form a stronger relationship but that's only after Thomas and Avalon end up together officially- Simon thinks Avalon is really cool, and Avalon likes that his daughters have a cousin they can look up to (Simon LOVES babysitting/hanging out with Dawn and Lily btw theyre defo The World's Most Chaotic Cousins)

in RCD world, Simon was very small when Avalon and Thomas were together the first time and he knew Avalon just as Thomas' Cool Fun Roommate. he was absolutely DEVASTATED when Avalon "moved away" (read: they broke up) bc he thought Avalon was just SO COOL. but alas, since he was so small at the time he doesn't really remember Avalon all that well. But he is excited when Avalon reenters Thomas' life, and even more excited to find out that they're getting married (he'd be about early/mid 20s by this point). he may not remember Avalon too clearly, but he remembers how much he loved it when Uncle Thomas and his Best Friend Avalon came to visit

in both worlds: one Dr Bryce Lahela does Simon's top surgery (i'd say he gets it maybe mid/late 20s). he specifically chose an Edenbrook doctor bc Thomas knows Dr Banerji and he asked if there were any surgeons that Dr Banerji would trust to do the surgery properly, and he recommended Bryce :) more on how Thomas knows Naveen later

Baxter & Reigan

theyre getting a whole section to just them bc theyre BoyBestFriends and there's a lot about em (but ill try to keep it short)

Baxter and Reigan met in high school, after Baxter was deemed healthy enough to actually attend school instead of just being homeschooled in a hospital room (it was absolutely 100% Baxter's idea and want to do this, their parents wanted to keep them in the hospital 24/7 bc they were worried they'd immediately get sick)

at the time Baxter had been super standoffish and did not like being around people, so Reigan was the one to approach Baxter first. he was fairly well liked and respected by their classmates & he wanted to make sure that they didn't have an awful experience in school. eventually Baxter ended up asking Reigan out, not because they were particularly attracted to him (they were a bit of a late bloomer in that regard) but because they wanted to have all of those Normal Teenage Experiences(tm) and they did like spending time with him. and he said yes, bc even though he didn't feel any attraction either (he's ace/aro), he did like spending time with them as well (and to some degree was hoping that attraction might happen eventually)

dating for them just looked like how hanging out did, although they did hold hands a bit more and kiss at some point, when Baxter decided that they were at The Point In A Relationship Where You Kiss. they also went to prom together.

they broke up shortly after graduating high school, half bc Baxter achieved all those Normal Teenage Experiences(tm) they wanted to and half bc Reigan felt bad that he felt no attraction to Baxter, although he didn't mention it at the time bc he didn't want to hurt Baxter's feelings. there was a bit of a pause in their friendship after this, as both of them felt that they had to give the other some space to get over the romantic part of the relationship, but in the end they realized that neither cared? and went right back to being close good best friends :)

their friendship ended up being long distance for a while, as both college and career choices got in the way of being physically near each other. but. the week that Reigan got the job offer for McGraw Byrne was the week that Raf broke up with Baxter AND Ethan left for the Amazon, and the idea of being just a three hour train ride from his best friend defo played a role in him deciding to take the job. he actually flew to Boston instead of NYC so he could spend a little time with Baxter before he got too busy with his job. Baxter, Aurora, and Bryce actually spent one of their days off helping Reigan's dad furnish Reigan's Cool New NYC Apartment :)

speaking of Reigan's dad. Baxter is actually WAY closer w Reigan's parents than they are w their own. in fact, when Baxter went NC with their parents, Reigan's parent's were like "cool WE'RE your parents now :) we love you kiddo"

anyway. the attack in OH year two happened to line up w the end of LOA book one/beginning of book two (at least it does in my timeline) & Reigan immediately dropped everything to head to Boston to make sure Baxter was okay. while he was there, Martin kept trying to give Reigan really petty cases that were a waste of time, even though Reigan had taken time off and given a reason for it. he ended up chewing Martin out over the phone and quitting, deciding that he'd just look for a job in Boston to be closer to Baxter anyway. he stays in Boston for a bit to help take care of Baxter after they're discharged from the hospital, and when he gets back to New York he learns that Aislinn and Gabe also quit & have started their own law firm, which Reigan has been given a job offer for. he takes it only after Baxter assures him that they will be fine if he stays in NYC

Baxter is the reason that Reigan and Tobias meet (but not the reason that they end up in a qpr together) and they're also the Best Man Of Honor at both the weddings they end up having (Reigan and Tobias marry twice-- once in a Boston courthouse bc they decide that the legal benefits of being married work with what they want from the relationship w each other (Baxter's role here was just a witness), and a second time a more traditional wedding (more of an exchange of vows than a legal process this time) a year or two later to appease the parents)

and this does Not have to do with Baxter and Reigan's friendship but it doesn't really warrant it's own section: Reigan and my Bachelorette Party MC, Hallie, are friends from law school :) and speaking of Hallie, she's the twin sister of one of my Lovelink MCs, Harvy, although Harvy and Hallie were separated at birth bc their bio mom didn't know she was having twins until giving birth & she was unprepared to raise both so Hallie was put up for adoption & raised in the US (Harvy was raised in Vancouver, Canada). it takes em a while to find out about each other (Hallie knew she was adopted but didn't know she was a twin (her adoptive parents didn't know either) and Harvy just straight up Didn't Know he was a twin as his mom didn't tell him). also Harvy technically is just A Character I Have Now bc i really don't care for Lovelink anymore

It Lives

ok so here's where it gets messy. also i might kind of be vague here sorry

the It Lives series has a bunch of different ways to end (zero thanks to pb, this is 100% itlivesproject's win [blows a kiss for the itlivesproject crew <3]), all of which i really like.

so tbh for my world. each and every one of the endings is both canon and non canon, depending on which one i feel like writing for. bc sometimes i wanna write some cute soft fluff where Noah and Devi get to overcome their trauma. and sometimes i want Noah to fucking wallow in his pathetic meowmeow sopping wet sadboy misery where [SPOILERS] bc [SPOILERS] and [SPOILERS] (seriously pls go read the it lives trilogy theyre so good, especially It Lives Within)

however. It Lives IS canon in my worlds. i like the idea of a very mundane world having some kind of exciting magic to it, even if its mostly unknown. just. a magic that touches everyone's lives in little ways and connects us all together :) and that's EXACTLY what the Power is

anyway the ending where the It Lives characters get to interact with characters from other stories is the one where Noah and Devi get to overcome their trauma, and they open up a restaurant together <3 basically i think at some point All of my characters will end up having a meal at Baby Jane's. not all together, but they'll make their way there eventually :)

also there's my au where It Lives is a tv show which I KNOW i said i wouldn't talk about aus BUT i just want yall to know that the actor who plays Devi (i don't have a name for him yet, bc hes not technically Devi) sees Avalon as a mentor figure :)

Thomas & Naveen

hey so remember when i said i'd talk about Thomas' top surgery later? and that i'd also talk about how he knows Naveen? well.

my Thomas took a gap year between his senior year of high school and his freshman year of college to medically and legally transition. he was moving to a new place and he wanted to be as stealth as he could be. so as soon as he turned 18, he got his name legally changed and started on testosterone, and got his top surgery scheduled. his plan was that by the time he started college, he would have recovered from his surgery and he'd have been on T for long enough that he'd be going through most of the changes he'd want from it

he specifically found a surgeon in the same town his older brother (Simon's dad, his name is Jonathan) had moved to so he'd have some company/a caretaker while he recovered. unfortunately for him, that surgeon... kind of sucked. his surgery was done wrong, and wasn't healing properly, even though both Thomas and Jon were making sure they were doing everything right. but when they tried to talk to the surgeon, the surgeon would just say "nope everything's fine nothing is wrong you are delusional :) its SUPPOSED to be all rotten and nasty :) stop bothering me" and no one else in the clinic seemed to care at all?

anyway one day Jon just had Enough, bc he'd heard from other people who'd had this surgery how recovery typically looked, and his brother was just wasting away, too weak to do anything bc of how his surgery got fucked up and he kind of just. snapped. and started yelling at the surgeon to Please Fucking Do Something.

while the surgeon didn't do anything, Jon's yelling attracted the attention of a different doctor, one who had only heard bits and pieces about this patient who's brother kept stopping by to ask over and over again if a surgery was healing properly, one who'd heard said surgeon being kind of a dick about it in the breakroom, and he decided that someone needed to do something to help these brothers

that doctor being a young Dr Naveen Banerji, pre diagnostics team and pre Edenbrook employment

he caught Jon just outside after Jon had been..... "politely" escorted out and asked what, specifically seemed to be wrong with his brother's recovery

immediately recognizing the problem caused the surgeon's incompetence/prejudices effecting the health and safety of a patient, Naveen helped Jon find a hospital to take Thomas to, one that would actually help him with what was wrong and set him onto a proper path for recovery

he also quit his job at that hospital. he'd noticed things similar to that happening before, but this was just the final straw. he helped as many patients as he could there, but at some point you have to know when to walk away. but that was a good thing for his career, as he was able to start the diagnostics team at Edenbrook, not to mention that other hospital ended up getting shut down for medical malpractice

Thomas and Naveen stayed in touch, and now whenever Thomas ends up in Boston for whatever reason, he'll stop by for a visit :)

Hi!!! I would just like to say how much I loved your Artem and Vyn analysis. This also helped me realize how much I kinned the both of them, lol.

I wonder what would happen if Artem just came clean to Vyn and asked for a mental diagnosis (he probably needs one). We get crying and venting Artem (I would pay for that shii) and Vyn seeing that Artem isn't perfect in a way that doesn't belittle Artem or make Vyn superior. I'd like to see how Vyn would react if Artem did this; would it change their work dynamic, would it change how Vyn saw himself? Tbh I'm not too familiar with Vyn to say this hahaha

hello!!! wahh, im glad you enjoyed my vyn and artem analysis :D

this ask is interesting because personally, i dont think artem would go to vyn for mental health services (either a diagnosis, therapy, prescriptions, any of em). this is primarily because of what i mentioned in the analysis itself that like, artem sees vyn as a symbol somebody he wants to be but is failing to achieve.

being vulnerable in the face of that...i dont think artem would do that willingly. if it happened, some kind of outside circumstance would have to push him into that situation.

if that situation does happen, ur right, vyn will not take on the offensive because at his heart, hes a doctor and artem is somebody who is in pain. he will help in any way he can and later wonder if how he holds his own image (the image of perfection and control) had somehow, even tangentially, contributed to artem's distress

if vyn comes to the conclusion that yes, he did somehow contribute to this one way or another, itd be a wake up call for vyn irt how being "perfect" can make people around him look down upon themselves (this was discussed in this response as well irt to how mc feels inadequate sometimes with vyn)

on the flipside, even if theyre friends already and care about each other, i still dont think artem would go to vyn but for a different reason. because once artem cares about somebody, he wants to be seen by them as this almost impossible balance of Super Reliable but also Not Perfect but also Correct In Every Way but also I'm Just Some Guy. there goes artem once again with the contradictions that drive him nuts.

that being said, i actuall wrote a fanfic where artem goes to (non-vyn) therapy!!! it's called "designed to send mixed signals, one image made up of different pixels" and jus click the link to go check it out hehe

in that fic, artem is quite close with all members of the nxx team, vyn included. he cares about all of them so much and he wants to be a good (i.e. correctly functioning) human being for them, and because of that, he wants to seek help outside of the team so they dont see how hes "incorrect" and also so that he can work on becoming better for them.

and as for a diagnosis, this is purely just my own hc + me projecting VERY HARD i dont even try to justify it into my interpretation of artem's character, this is self indulgence = i think artem wing is bipolar with a history of depression and anxiety.

thats is the diagnosis i work on in the above linked fic and my rationale is this:

artem is somebody rooted in logic. i see him valuing cause and effect, rational outcomes, reasonable emotions, analysis and studying something to make it make sense and find the answer. this is a lot of how i am as a person as well, i like to tackle everything from the vantage points of logic because logic is constant

the nature of bipolar disorder (irt how i experience it it) is being in flux

upswings and downswings can happen either because of a cause but it's more often in my experience that it happens for no reason. my psychiatrist explained it to me like "the circumstances are not changing but your brain has difficulty regulating mood aligned with it." this is hell for me. sometimes theres no cause, oftentimes my brain is irrational and unreasonable, and no matter how much i pick it apart, making it "make sense" doesnt solve the problem

because life isnt sposed to work like that in the first place. life isnt a set of problems and solutions and so much of it is chaotic and you cannot live your life as a case study or else you will suffer for it.

so, to me, artem is bipolar cuz 1) itd clash with his unhealthy system of looking at himself and his life for a long time and thus cause him pain but then as he grows he will learn to manage it while also adopting a healthier view of who he is and how he lives. and 2) i get to project onto fictional characters....as a treat :')

okay so, im about to go ham because i truly stand strong in my shoujo fantasy.

In my opinion, im pretty sure (like 89%) lucifer tells us that whenever mammon breaks off a relationship with someone, they go broke completely after. so hes had previous relationships before, as for the rest of the boys, im pretty sure lucifer has, but nothing serious, he wont let anyone in, MC is literally the only person who has pushed past his walls and seen him for more than pride. satan, 100% he has never had a relationship, levi, has had a couple of fwbs and other relationships but they always fizzle out, never lasting. asmo has never had a serious relationship, always just flings. belphie never had a serious relationship and same with beel. i truly believe MC is their first true loves, i know what youre thinking "theyve been alive for so long, theres no way someone couldnt have been special to them" but the thing is, theyre so different with MC; their entire dynamic and relationships changed with MC, MC saw them for more than their sin and got to know them to their very core, while yes the other relationships never lasted, thats not to say the boys didnt love them; but just not in the way they love MC. i believe MC to be a true love, not just a love, the difference for me is all of the boys would gladly give up chasing MC once she finds herself happy with another brother, instead of forcing them to choose yk? the "as long as youre happy, it kills me everytime i look at you smile at him, but i love you too much to let you be miserable with me" and i dont think any of them have experienced. also, with the whole "new relationship" thing, the honey moon phase, while yes every couple has it, i feel like with MC it would just, last. not to say they wouldnt have fights; ofc they would, but its different with MC, everyday the brothers would wake up and chose the option to love and fall in love all over again, speaking further on that, i dont think any of them would truly get over MC. and i mean that; (i dont think MC is going to die, obey me devs have something planned LOL, plus theyre super powerful, like the other anon said i dont think theyd be able to really function without them, even if they do "get over" mcs death at some point.) after MC dies i feel like the family dynamic wouldnt be the same, the brothers would get quieter and would never truly forget about it? and every relationship would fail because theyre not MC (you dont have to agree but i love reverse harems), like i 100% hc that after MC chooses another brother or after they die, mammon would try and try to find new flings, even after its been decades mammon finds someone whos super similar to MC, their look, personality, etc, but one wrong move and theyre out. (say MC doesnt like pickles, but the replacement for MC does, he would immediately start crying and call mc a stupid human who he shouldnt have fallen for.) anyways in conclusion, i truly dont think MC would ever die canonically in the obey me game, the devs are sneaky (love you devs), but even if they would, i really feel like they would never get truly over it. some part of me truly believes that the brothers would go back to being distant, how they were before. they would sit at the table and eat in silence, asmo would begin partying ten times harder (since we already know he uses his ego to cover up his major insecurity of people not liking him and how he feels about himself) and the brothers would become even more indugled in their sin. also, for every relationship they would have, they would just compare them to MC, and yeah but I cannot see MC dying. the other stuff about what the brothers would be like after MC dies could also be applied to when MC chooses her s/o. i think the brothers would be super fucking hurt, that was their first love, their first understanding who walked out and chose someone who wasnt them. anyways thats all, you dont have to reply i just felt like i needed to get this off of my chest, also im gonna be pretty frequent on your blog ( i love ur writing ) so im gonna call myself cake anon! have a great day! - cake anon

Hello Cake! iluuu! Thanks for this, i really love getting every ones take on these things! And there is defs a lot that i agree with here. 

I agree with the Mammon part. Out of all of the brothers, i feel he is probably the easiest to get emotionally attached in a relationship, so i see him as the one with the most previous relationships. Asmo coming in second, but his being mostly flings or poly/open relationships. I’m sure Mammon has had some serious ones as well as many flings, where Asmo’s have never been overly serious and certainly never long lasting. I’m also sure Luci has had a few, some more serious than others, but he wouldn’t get overly attached emotionally. I’m sure he’d be too busy with Diavolo since arriving, being the workaholic he is. I’m sure not many partners would be willing to deal with that level of non-commitment and emotional unavailability from him.Levi I feel like all his relationships never left that awkward early stage, and his only ‘serious’ relationships would have been strictly online, maybe a couple meetups that made him nope right out of it. Satan, again, has probably just gone on some casual dates but didn’t have much interest in actually dating rather than gaining connections. i feel like Beel is the most likely candidate to have had healthy previous relationships. He is pretty well balanced emotionally and has a good outlook on love and family values. I’m sure he’s had a few serious relationships and has dated his share of people. Belphie gives me vibes of had one or two previous serious relationships that did not end well at all and now he’s a salty sob over it lmao. 

I still don’t feel like MC is necessarily their first true love, but maybe the first different kind of love for them. MC has reached them in ways no one else has, they don’t try to change anything, they fit in well with the whole family, they understand their sins etc. I have loved a few different people in my life, and each one was such a different experience for me. The first guy i loved, i consider to be my first true love. However, it didn’t work. And then i met the man I eventually married, he wasn’t my first true love, but it was a better kind of love, yk? 

And uugghh you ripped my heart out with how the brothers would feel if MC chose a different brother!!!! Because they all would be so heartbroken it’s not them, but they really truly just want mc to be happy and cared for, and they know their brother would keep them safe and provide well. 

A few asks ago, i mentioned that the brothers would move on eventually. I think there is a big difference in moving on and getting over that I maybe didn’t articulate very well. If MC were to die or choose someone else, they would move on eventually, but they might not ever really get over it. My heart hurts just thinking about how they would feel trying to move on. Like you mentioned, the empty, quiet dinner tables, lackluster parties and festivals, it would be like they lost their best friend. (i giggled picturing your mammon scenario with the pickle because that’s exactly how he’d react to something so small lmaooo)

I also agree that i don’t think the devs will kill mc off (again), that just seems like a really crappy way to end the game!! I’m curious to see how they would make different routes go if you can only romance one of them end game, vs you being able to have them all? I wonder if we’d get a choice in the whole becoming immortal thing or not?

ohhh im flattered youd wanna come to me for vil writing advice out of so many other writers around omg T_T vil is one of my favorites so i do have Things to say about him hdhdjkfs hopefully you can find some useful info in the middle of my rambling!

im not the best with prompts, to me that kinda depends on what sort of mc/reader you wanna work with in the story?? an easy one would be vil teaching/helping them out with something, since his tendency to lecture colors the way he interacts with others so much. if were going for romantic fluff, something with a regal aesthetic like taking a walk in a garden or ballroom dancing could be nice too!! maybe teaching reader how to dance?? thats a classic i cant get enough of jsdgkfk

onto characterization... vil is very complex, actually. we all know hes very strict and proud, and willing to go to great lengths for his goals, but translating that into interactions can get tricky, since the way he expresses it isnt nearly as open as it might look like it is?

i think its kinda pertinent to compare him to riddle when thinking about how to write him, since theyre both these "strict with others but mainly themselves" types? but vil differs in that his brand of scolding isnt as affected by emotion, hes not as likely to lose his cool. i wouldnt picture him yelling unless the situation is Really dire, i mean. he cares a lot about his image so he comes off as a lot more poised and sophisticated. they both have this aristocrat flavor but vil is a lot more queenly id say.

when it comes to romance, he wouldnt be very affectionate outwardly, but not in the way that hes shy or awkward, just more subdued. i think he tends towards taking on a very caring sort of role, but still with his nitpicky perfectionist undertone, if that makes sense? hes still prone to scolding, but its a lot more lighthearted, kind of going "what am i going to do with you" in exasperation at his partner when they do something like, show up to class looking messy? but then fixing them up and such. he can be gentle and soft, but wouldnt get overly sweet.

besides that, id recommend you to read up on some vil personal stories to get a good hold of his dialogue and such!! he has a nice and polished speech pattern that i think is a staple of how to portray him. beans day event also gives us some good vil moments! i hope this makes sense jgjkgs if you need anything else feel free to let me know!

Also he cant afford to have you die. Not here.

Mammon:

Wow you're... Different. Yeah that the best way he can put it. It kind of... Appals him at how soft and innocent you are not gonna lie. He walks on eggshells around you because he doesnt know if anything sets you off, or worse, makes you cry. Not a fan, honestly, but as long as youre not a threat, he sticks around.

Leviathan:

Lolololol what are you doing in the Devildom #1. How could they have chosen YOU for this dumb exchange program? You wont be able to survive long. They shouldve put you up in the Celestial Realm. You kind of remind him on Ruri-chan though so maybe that's why he decides to be your designated protector?

Satan:

Lolololol what are you doing in the Devildom #2. Listen he doesnt /care/ what you look like or how you act. His only instructions were to make sure you stay alive and that's what he's doing. He always knew something was special about them, their magic was so strong and just felt different than anything he’d ever felt before.

It was nearly intoxicating to have them use their magic on him, the feeling of it washing over him, it was so unique and so very Them. 

After he brought them back, he was terrified how this would complicate things. They had the Fool’s body, could the fool’s body contain the power of a Fae? 

Would their powers come back? Would they be too strong for the body? Would they have no magic at all? 

Then he started to feel bad for them, once their magic started coming back, he knew that his magic was nothing compared to theirs and yet he had to teach them magic from scratch, he didn’t feel qualified.

But he was also worried about them hurting themself because they didn’t know how to control how powerful they were yet. 

Overall? He’s beyond proud of them. Look at his Super Powerful Fae Spouse, thats His Spouse!!! 

Nadia

She’s embarrassed to say that she’s heard of the Fae but doesn’t know a ton about them.

Though, she’d love for them to sit down and tell her all about the Fae and what its like to be one of them, over a cup of tea. 

She first notices something about MC when she activates her mark and can see all the magic around them, and MC lights up in a way that she has never seen a person, magician or not, light up, ever before in her life. 

Its dazzling and, dare she say, Enchanting. 

Knowing MC is so, so incredibly Powerful is something that draws her to to them, power seeks out power, as it were. It doesn’t hurt that theyre gorgeous, Fae or not. 

She loves seeing displays of MC’s power and magic, and she likes knowing that not many people know about it, its their little secret. 

And the thought of a very powerful Fae creature being SO submissive to her in the bedroom is…enticing. 

Julian

He is….taken aback? Overwhelmed? Scared? Confused? A little horny? All of the above? when MC first tells him.

He’s all for being intimidated by a powerful partner, but the Magic part has him a little wary, he barely understands human magicians, much less the concept of the Fae or Fae magic. 

He doesn’t really know what to do the first time he feels their magic in the magical realms, he thought he was prepared but he wasn’t, at all. 

He wonders why their magic couldn’t stop the plague, they’re so powerful, and they were working as his apprentice, he doesn’t know anything about magic but something feels very bad about knowing they had all that magical power and still weren’t able to stop it, they weren’t able to avoid dying of the plague either. 

Post- upright end he ends up relishing the feeling of their power, especially when they’re using magic in the bedroom. ;) Post reversed ending he’s thankful that MC is such a powerful creature because they have to live in a world full of chaotic powerful magic. 

MURIEL/PORTIA/LUCIO/COURTIERS UNDER THE CUT

Muriel

Muriel lives in the forest, he knows the Fae lore, and he is WARY of MC. He has half a mind to use a fake name until Asra walks in and says “Hi muriel” and blows it. 

He keeps an eye on them at all times, just waiting for something about their True Nature to rear its ugly head, but when it….doesn’t….he’s mostly confused and straight up asks them about it. 

Eventually he gets used to how powerful their magic is, it makes him feel a little better knowing that they’re capable of being at least as dangerous as him, but also choose not to. It gives him…a little hope for himself as a person and his future in not hurting people, even accidentally. 

He’s still really taken aback (and impressed) the first time he sees their full display of power, he’d only heard in tales the power of the Fae…

Is wary of marrying them, he was careful to never drink anything they gave him, so why is he marrying them? He loves them? Oh…right, he does. He just needs to get over the “marrying a Fae creature” thing. 

Portia

She LOVES SECRETS. MC telling her a secret? That they’re secretly a super powerful FAE CREATURE???? She wants to shout it from the rooftops she’s so excited but,~oops~ she wont. *zips mouth motion*

She’s read about Fae in a book in the palace, aren’t they supposed to be like, really tiny? And live in the woods and try to trick you into things? MC do you secretly live in a mushroom? 

Portia is literally dying to find out how powerful MC is, its impressive enough that they’re a magician but his is on a whole new level of impressive to her. (Swoon) But also…she wants to see what MC can do!

She asks MC to make her a cup of tea and then downs the whole thing in one gulp and says “does this mean we’re married now?” and thats how she lets MC know that she wants to get married. 

If MC ever lets her know its ok to tell people, she literally never stops bragging about her super powerful Fae spouse. 

Lucio

Lucio is drawn to power and MC is no different. When they tell him, he responds. “I KNEW there was something special about you! I have a sense for these kinds of things, I attract powerful people, its part of my charm and one of my many talents.” 

He still nearly pees his pants when he feels MC”s power for the first time, he’s used to dealing with powerful creatures but being able to feel their power so close to him, it’s like nothing he’s ever felt before. 

“Youre a what now?” “Of course I’ve heard of the Fae, who do you take me for? I’m worldly.” He says, yknow, like a liar. 

He is chomping at the bit to see MC take someone down though, him displaying his feats of strength slaying the wyrm was essentially his way of flirting (and definitely arousing and intended to be arousing for MC) so he’s ready for their show too. 

Dramatically presents them with a dress made in the style of the Fae he saw in a book. 

Valerius

Do they really expect him to know what that means? That they’re Fae?

(He’s genuinely interested when they explain it to him, he even stops sipping his wine and sits up in his chair to listen) 

After a few minutes he takes a second and wonders if he should have been including the Fae in his diplomatic relations all these years and never has been. Ultimately he cares about Vesuvia above most other things (except for MC), so if they’re a powerful non-human magician, he wants to know how they can help Vesuvia and how Vesuvia can help them. 

(He wont mind a demonstration of their *ahem* immense power, though, perhaps back in his chambers)

Vulgora

POWERFUL YOU SAY? 

They challenge them to a duel, but its mostly a display of MC”s immense powerful energy. 

They earn Vulgora’s respect p much immediately. 

The ONLY way to make them swoon is to beat them in battle and MC does that so like, whens the wedding yknow. 

Vulgora does NOTHING but brag about MC being powerful and capable of squashing any enemy with ease. 

Vlastomil

He’s....attracted to power. He knows power, intimately.

Volta doesn’t have a very good track record with very powerful beings so she’s a little wary about getting close to them. 

But she’s easily won over if MC gives her lots of food, maybe even magic food like Mazelinka’s soup but more powerful that can keep her full!.

VOLTAGE. PEAKED!!!! AT KAGA’S SEQUEL

THIS STORY IS AN ABSOLUTE 

(Early warning: minor/major spoilers and a lot of rants/fangirling/thirst etc etc all bec I just absolutely love this story and I feel the need to share this love with everyone. Also, I keep seeing everyone hating on MC in this but I actually really liked her here and so I MUST defend her)

Okay

First of all look. loOK. LOOK AT THESE CGS!!!!

CAN YOU BELIEVE WE GET A HOT AND SEXY KAGA CG, A LITERALLY STEAMY ROMANTIC CG AND A BOMB AF STORY ALL FOR $3 EYE-

And oh my huedhaut dont even get me started on the story. It was absolutely on point. It has everything a HLITF story promises to have:

justice in the eyes of our straightlaced MC vs the PSD ✔️

Conflict btwn Kaga and MC precisely because of that ✔️

Our girl pulling a vanishing act bec she refused to compromise her values ✔️

the refusal of each side to back down and their love for each other TEARING THEM APART INSIDE ✔️

OUR GIRL SHOWING OFF HOW INSIGHTFUL SHE REALLY IS AND FINDING A SOLID AF LEAD ✔️

MC’S GROWTH in finding a somewhat compromise between her principles and what is required of her as a PSD detective ✔️

And of course, my absolute favourite: ANGSTY ANGSTY MY-WORLD-IS-ENDING-BECAUSE-MY-MC-IS-IN-DANGER-ANGSTY KAGA ✔️

Okay, I need to address the one thing that everyone just hates about this story en masse and it’s MC. Personally, I dont agree with her about the some parts, especially the interrogation because she did hinder an investigation and in law enforcement that is one big No-No but I do see where she’s coming from, especially with the surveillance thing and the whole copping out and literally running away to the countryside. I saw reviews abt her being completely naive but seriously, put yourself in the position of the one being spied. She’s so against it because to the suspect, what they’re doing could be harmful to him, especially so if he was innocent. I think as a person, she believes in the more publically-accepted justice - the kind of justice that everyone wants but is really very difficult to obtain.

And this is where we get to the beauty of this story. As per their MO, the PSD is ready to do whatever it takes to get the culprit even it means breaking the law. They’re desperate to get the culprit because people are actually getting hurt and the longer this guy gives them the slip, the more people are going to get hurt. Even in MSB, its been established that to the PSD, the end ALWAYS justify the means and they dont give a shit if they look like criminals for it. So this is where the conflict arises between MC and the PSD guys. For the PSD, there’s an opportunity where they might get the culprit but its illegal and for MC, what the PSD wants to do is too risky for something only based on suspicion; she wants to stay on the legal path but she has no lead whatsoever and time is not on either side. People dont seem to realise the weight of MC’s viewpoint and have a tendency to think of ‘officers doing something illegal’ as something as light as jaywalking or smt. No, these institutions have a wide reach and one misstep could bring harmful repercussions onto countless innocent people not to mention the implications of their actions on their integrity as an institution of the law and the integrity of the entire justice system. However, the PSD’s side is a lot more true to reality albeit in more complex situations: their duty beyond all else is to prevent crime and there are times when there really seems to be no way. I’ve been working in law for the past few years and this is a classic dilemma that has been simplified but quite well executed in this context. Justice is not as clear cut as the right way, the right end. The law may simply be black words on white paper but different circumstances dye it with their own colours. This is where MC is lacking. She’s like a freshman at law school - someone who truly believes in the importance of justice but actually has little idea what that actually entails. She is not entirely naive but more in a sense that she’s never been confronted with these kind of complex high-stakes situations (she worked in a police box before this for Ichthys’s sake) and that inexperience disables her from seeing and evaluating the entire situation from the PSD’s pov. For her, its like playing poker for the first time and she’s already betting with the million dollar chips.

The second thing I REALLY must defend her in is the whole quitting from the academy. For the love of Zyglavis, she did NOT run away just because Kaga told her she’s not suited for PSD, it was just the trigger. Lemme put it in a different scenario (btw this scenario is not meant to mirror the situation, its only meant to evoke how MC felt in the story) Imagine you live in a city and you and your significant other are living together. A pandemic has struck your city but everyone refuses to wear a mask and the government is even encouraging people not to wear a mask. You know that wearing a mask slows down the spread of the virus and you are trying to convince people to wear one but they just ignore you. The number of cases is dropping and people think its because they dont wear masks unlike other cities but you know that people should still wear masks or the numbers might spike. So you try to convince everyone to wear a mask and people start berating you for being so stupid as to believe that masks will slow down the spread of the virus when the numbers are dropping without the city wearing them. You go home and your significant other berates you for forcing other people to wear a mask and says ‘since you wanna wear a mask so badly, get out of my house and move out of town’ That’s what it felt like for MC: the absolute frustration + sadness from the rejection of what she truly believes in by the people she’s surrounded by. Time and time again in the story, she’s confronted with the fact that the justice she believes in is not the justice PSD serves. For someone who is working towards joining the PSD, that has to be killing her inside every time. It just serves as a reminder that she is not suited for PSD nor is she what PSD wants in a detective, something she has been struggling with since MS1 but she perseveres perhaps because of her dream to become a detective or because of her aspirations to someday be Kaga’s equal or at least be someone he considers he can rely on. I really believe it’s the second one, after all, it was his rejection of her that really broke her inside and finally convinced her to quit. That’s why if you buy the ending set, you’ll see in the extra stories that Kaga gets extremely angry AT HIMSELF that MC quit the academy. He knows that our persistent Kappa doesnt give up so easily, not even when he scolded her for ruining his interrogation. Its because all these factors built up and he was the one to push her over her limit. So yes, our girl is not fragile yall. She’s just been through so much and I honestly dont blame her for leaving like one order of R&R for our MC here, she deserves it thanks. 

Okay, I need to end this soon cause its starting to get too long but what made me really love her here is the whole LIME thing. That part made love her so much because even when she quit on the academy, there’s still a fire inside her to do what it takes to achieve justice, even if it meant relying on the people she didnt agree with. Even when she was so broken inside believing that she’s not one of them, she’s not needed by them, she’s not worthy of helping them; she just wants to help!

Okay, you have to read that phone call scene from both sides because then you’ll see how much these two are being stubborn because they still dont accept the other’s pov abt the case but at the same time how much they love and miss each other is gnawing at them inside AND THEYRE STRUGGLING TO HOLD ALL THOSE EMOTIONS BACK WHEN THEY HEAR EACH OTHERS’ VOICES OVER THE PHONE FREAKING KRIOFF TAKE THE WHEEL PLEASE

Anyways, I really enjoyed reading season 1 for Kaga, especially because of his MC - I see her actually growing from the small police box officer to a PSD cadet and the sequel, especially, shows promise in how she’s going to navigate the world of law enforcement and facing difficult choices. Our girl really decided to return to the academy without finding a proper middle ground between her values and what PSD requires of her but she showed determination to work on it so I really hope we get to see more of that in later seasons. Also, WHIPPED Kaga is my fav but soft Kaga is up there as well. MC SAYING HE SOUNDED SAD OVER THE PHONE AND HER TEARING UP I CANT. THESE TWO ARE BAD FOR MY HEART.

Okay, Im not sure what I’ll be reading next. I kinda wanna start on his season 2 but considering how amazing this season is for Kaga, Im really curious abt the other characters so I might start on them before starting any season 2s. Also, idk if I would make these long argumentative-ish essays a thing but just idk why, my brain is really good at spewing essays out when it comes to HLITF and I think its fuelled by the panic from all my unfinished work so yay

TUT thank you! Then could i request Saeran, Saeyoung, and Vanderwood reacting to meeting a scared child alter? Theyre scared of saying whats going on without being asked, but they have a hard time acting normal, and any "adult" situations theyre used to mc being okay with scare them. Like flirting, or substances like alcohol or smoking? Maybe the child alter can still feel kind of comfortable with them though, like theyre okay with being held so long as its obviously not romantic or sexual?

Warning for those who are triggered by mentions of DID, alters, systems, or any of the sort.

Saeran 

Saeran knew that you had very similar struggles to him, he saw it when he was looking for the perfect candidate. He saw something in your eyes that felt akin to him and once he picked you there was no going back. He empathizes greatly with people who had gone through something not so great, and he finds a sense of comradery and comfort in the notion that you understand him unlike anyone else. 

That’s just why he latched on so hard. It started to become more frequent, your switches, after you had left Magenta. It wasn’t much of a surprise, that place was very stressful and could make anyone uneasy and unsure of themselves. He knew it all too well. 

One morning, in particular, he got up and left the room to go and check on the status of work with C&R, but when he came back, something seemed off about the situation. By now, it would have been routine for you to get up with him and start breakfast. Instead, your body was turned away from him on the couch and your knees were tucked close to your body. 

He tried to prompt you, by calling your name, but you didn’t look back at him or say anything. That seems really out of the ordinary. He tried once again, but shoulders only seemed to tense and the tension grew. Now, he knew that from personal experience that this might have been another member of your system that he hadn’t met. 

Saeran gives some physical space to the child alter and makes sure that he’s not invading their comfort zone. 

So, he takes a seat a bit away from them because hey, if you didn’t know where you were or if you don’t know who somebody was, of course, it would be scary! He’s incredibly gentle, and he doesn’t rush them to answer him, he slowly starts to prompt them with questions about what’s bothering them, and if they feel okay. 

The child opens up, but only after Saeran has diffused some of their fears for the moment. They were really struggling with everything that you were dealing with, too, and they really don’t have the capacity to keep up any charade that they’re you. 

Ray is a lot like this child during his moments of dread and panic, so, Saeran knows how Ray would want to be treated, so he acts with that thought in mind. First and foremost, he makes a point of trying to empathize with the child and discern how they can make things better. 

He doesn’t rush them to like him, that’s not what he’s worried about, he wants them to know that they’re safe and that he’s a trustworthy person that they can ask for help if they need help. They’re a kid, and kids have their own comfort levels. All he does is offer to try activities or help them procure things that can make them more comfortable... if they need a blanket, a plush, or anything of that regard, he’ll be the first to offer to go and get it. He asks with the same urgency that he would have hoped to receive when he was a kid. 

Y’know, thank goodness that he’s so good at baking because there’s nothing that kids want more than something sweet. 

He usually tries to lift the child’s spirit by offering them something that he’s made. Saeran is very doting and sincere, and he pushes everything aside to ensure that they’re feeling okay. He asks a lot of questions to ensure that they’re comfortable, and he never does anything without asking first. Whatever they want, he’ll do what he can. If they feel comfortable enough with him to ask for a hug, he’ll be happy to provide it. 

Saeran really wants your system to trust him, but he knows that it’s going to take time, and he wants to understand how to help not only you but your alters, your littles, so on and so forth.

Saeyoung

Saeyoung knew after going through your medical records that you had a lot going on, he didn’t read too far into it, he just skimmed a bit briefly to see since the file was rather large compared to some of your other information. He never brought It up himself, he waited for you to feel comfortable enough with him or even the others to talk about it. Being with the RFA wasn’t always the easiest thing in the world, and he figured that you had to settle into this weird new normal of yours. 

It isn’t really until later after you’ve started being around each other more often in person that he meets more of your system, but he understands that not all of them will be approving of him or like him at first, and he’s got to work with them too since they’re with you and anything they’re struggling with, your entire system is going to have a hard time with. 

He’s working on something, tinkering away at his desk on some pieces parts for one of his robots. 

You’re supposed to be behind him or in the other room playing on your phone or speaking with the rest of the RFA in the chatroom since it’s the peak time of day for everyone to be online. He gets a text from one of the others that you had stopped responding in the chat after something was brought up and the others were a bit concerned. 

Saeyoung set his things aside and went to go and check on you just in case something was really wrong and you just hadn’t gotten distracted making lunch or something. He found your body sitting on the kitchen floor, your lips pursed and hands nervously fiddled with the fabric of your hoodie. It seems a bit odd, but he can’t be sure what’s up unless you say something to him.

His instinct is to ask you what’s wrong and after a brief moment of silence, in a quiet voice, the child alter speaks up and tells him that they’re upset. He doesn’t know what upset them, but he knows that it must have been something big for them because their body is tense. It’s clearly not you right now but he’s not sure who they are, he still makes a point of sitting down next to them, not too close as to not startle them. 

After some gentle probing here and there, he discerns that the conversation in the chat had bordered on something that really wasn’t comfortable for them, and they got overwhelmed and had to leave. He does his best to make them feel better once he’s got a better grasp on what happened to them back there, and he plays up his goofy persona since it seems to make them laugh a little bit and perk up. 

Saeyoung understands that they’re just a child, and they have different comforts than you do. They need a different kind of reassurance to feel like they’re safe and everything. He takes to them like he did with Saeran, and he does with them what he would do with his little brother, he would try to make them laugh, try to remind them that things are okay even when they feel scary, and just generally all-around try to ensure their safety. 

His approach is to act goofy and make them smile, what he would do with any other upset child, honestly. He does his best to make them feel better when they’re afraid, and although he may make a few boundary mistakes every now and again on accident, Saeyoung is trying. With the child, he’s guilty of trying to spoil them with presents and things that make them feel more at home in his bunker. 

He would make any changes and do whatever it took to ensure that all of your system felt safe with him, especially the more vulnerable alters that need a bit of extra care. 

Vanderwood

Vanderwood has been around countless people in their life and there’s nothing that they aren’t surprised about. 

They’ve seen that, they’ve done this, and there is nothing that they can’t handle. Well, that’s what they think until you come into their life and make a whirlwind of sorts that they find themself juxtaposed into a life change unlike any other. One minute they’re forever stuck being an agent until somebody came around and took care of them, and the next, they’re free from that life forever. 

You’re always a surprise to them. There’s just so much about you that they can’t read or truly understand. That’s a good thing, they’re used to being able to read anybody, but you’re special, you’re that puzzle that takes forever to be solved because it’s so tricky. They’re not the best person to know what to do all of the time, though, they’re prone to mistakes, they’re human too. 

Vanderwood is pretty much used to being around you but not around your system. They haven’t come out much when they're around and if they have, Vanderwood hasn’t noticed per se. They know that it’s likely that it’s happened but they haven’t made themselves known to Vanderwood yet, so, the agent hasn’t yet directly spoken to any.

At least, until today that is. 

So much had been happening lately to not only them but you as well, and it was increasingly obvious that it was not only distressing you but others in your system as well. 

Your actions as of the last hour or so had let them know that something was a miss. Now, Vanderwood isn’t known for being soft or reassuring, when they see that your body’s eyes are covered in tears, that’s about all that it takes for them to want to help. 

Vanderwood first takes the steps to understand what the problem was and their tone was a little brash which may not help things at first but after the child understands that Vanderwood is just like that, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. 

Vanderwood tries to adjust accordingly to what is comfortable for the child but hey, it’s not always like they do the right thing, but they’re doing their best to mind what you may have mentioned to them in the past when in regards to helping your system feel safe. The easiest thing that they know how to do is hand them their plush or their comfort device to try and make things seem less disorienting. 

The child is treated with care and respect, very unlike the way that they treated Seven if that’s something you may have been worried about. Vanderwood may be a little rough around the edges but that doesn’t mean they can’t be nice to children. It’s kind of goofy when you come back from the switch and haven’t been close enough to front to know what’s been happening and the child has gotten Vanderwood to do something that they wouldn’t have done otherwise, like, tea.

　● Via Gekirock Interviewer: On the flipside of the coin, HELL”O” seems like a song infused with only the darkness of the heart. This type of song was never seen in Omedetai’s roster before.

Sekihan: Up until now we’ve focused on the joys of music, but deep down I actually think this world is a living hell. Omedetai is grounded on the concept of turning negatives into positives, but the fact that we ourselves have negatives inside us just like everyone else was, well, kinda undisclosed before. It’s hard to hit these things into a song or a short performance. The first time I divulged my heart at a long concert MC, everyone kinda went ‘Wow, so he feels like that huh’. People don’t know- and it turns out… people who are extremely depressed or mentally struggling seem to get pissed off when they hear our songs.

Interviewer: The songs are so bright and happy at a glance, huh.

Sekihan: According to some, it feels like it embosses the darkness within them and makes them want to scream “Shut up!”. ‘That’s the perverse effect’ I thought. Giving form and bringing light to those such jittery oozy festering feelings is literally number one on our job agenda. If we can’t even do that, then there’s no reason for us to tell you to have fun. Of course we’re not free of negativity, it’s the very biofuel for our positivity. So I took note of the necessity to shamelessly shamelessly show everyone what it looks like before it’s processed. The opportunity arised along with the full album - we had room for a more negative piece. Thus we came to the decision to do one.

Interviewer: Up until now your writing process involved changing the bad into good. Once you had to write the bare naked bad as is, was there any problems you encountered with?

Sekihan: Actually it feels like we’ve gone all-natural.

Sekihan: Seriously? It is true that none of my mates went hard on the editor’s red pen of death this time. Normally they beat the shit out of me with it (laughs). Well now I know that when someone’s truly miserable, it’s best to welcome that misery with open arms. Just saying “You can do it, feel better!” won’t save them. So we have to welcome the misery, soothe it, and only then does our music come it: its turn to give them a boost. I hope this works out well with everyone.

Interviewer: One thing that caught my attention was Poniki’s Twitter post reading “Even I feel like everything in life is stupid fucking bullshiiiit, arghhhh!! - But the band’s branding just prevents me from showing it!”

Ponikingdom: This album served to iron out that idea.

Sekihan: We’re supposed to be guys who ruminate the negatives then output them as positives. But after hearing feedback I learned that sometimes we were interpreted differently: people who are leagues deep in depression say that listening to our songs ticks them off, (laugh) it drags them deeper into depression. Our ultimate goal is akin to literally acting as a spokesperson for upset people, so when I heard that we were actually being counterproductive I was shocked.

Of course we feel negative feelings just like everyone else. So enough beating around the bush I said, we gotta express it directly. Hence “This world is a living hell” is the keyword of HELL”O". And once 324-kun saw that, he followed suit and included the lyric “Karmic hell” in ‘Kotoba no Ayaya’.  With these songs in their rightful place, they even helped to bring out the brightness in our positive songs, I think listeners will view us more as people now and I hope these songs are acting as a helping hand to pull depressed people out and up to higher heights.

Interviewer:  Omedetai always look like they're having a blast, and look like they’re as positive as can be.. So it makes sense that there are people who don’t fit in such a place.

Sekihan: But I don’t want to shrink and turn my back to them. I think I’ve managed to make space for them too. So this is the fruit of my growth.

im like five chapters from finishing and the pacing of this story is so different to Choices. or like, how choices novels typically play out bc ngl the pacing is kinda giving My First Two Loves but only 15 chapters instead of 100. also there were only 4 books released on this app before the devs dropped it like a hot potato, and all four of them are genderlocked f!mc, so i'll be refering to the mc with she/her pronouns even though im playing as my good doctor Baxter Lucafont (no last name in this book actually theyre just Dr Baxter)

the whole story takes place in the span of about a day, focusing on the main character trying to navigate the hospital during a crisis (building across the street on fire) (or maybe its a few blocks away? its hard to tell. the background art makes it look like across the street but the paramedics are driving back and forth which feels. inefficient if its across the street)

the main character was suspended from one of their paitents dying (he kept unplugging his heart moniter so he could hit on the nurse, & mc told the nurse next time he "flatlines" she should send a male coworker instead, but it took too long for her to find one (apparently there are no men nurses in this hospital? but there are women doctors so #feminism ig) and the dude was flatlining for realskis and he died. i had my mc take the blame for it bc she told the nurse to do that. also there's been anonymous complaints about mc, and mc immedeatly assumes its the other woman surgeon in the hospital bc theyre slightly antagonistic to each other

so the mc only shows up the day of the crisis bc she's emptying out her office (even though she's only been suspended and not fired), gets into an altercation in the parking lot (her ex bf showed up with stuff she left at his apartment and even though the mc said that actually she would like to have a civil conversation w him, this story's Forced White Boy LI decides to deck the dude in the face)

while getting the ex bf's nose stitched up, mc & ex have a conversation about why they broke up and uh. if you choose to come out as bisexual to him as your reason for breaking up, he gets mad and mc cites this as why they broke up. he never apologizes for this, and he is an LI. him being biphobic has not been brought up at all since mc called him out for being an ass. and being civil to him while at work (he's one of the firefighters pulling people from the burning building) makes the narrative seem to think that mc wants to get back together with him. EVEN THOUGH HE JUST GOT MAD AT MC FOR BEING BISEXUAL. i! hate this!

also while all that is going on, theres a special agent investigating the theft of some drugs. i dont know why the plotline is here, its just adding more bloat to the story. the special agent is uncomfortably flirty with mc but at least diversity win, it's a woman. but even though i havent flirted back with her, the nurse im actually trying to get with (not the same one as what accidentally killed the paitent) keeps walking in at the wrong time and getting more and more upset w mc for jealousy reasons and i cant tell her that i dont care about the special agent

also mc keeps walking into operating rooms like she's actually gonna do her job and then turing around and walking right back out so she can deal with personal drama. she deserves to lose her job at this point tbh

ive still got five chapters left and i genuinely dont know what the story is trying to build to. its not very well writen

hell yeah i do. ok so as a general rule, if you’re taking a chance go for something thats out on a real console (psp, vita, ps3/4) basically because theres a lot more random garbage on the mobile and steam fronts, and it’s not like there arent good ones but obviously the rate of trash to good is higher 

so heres a few of my most highly recommended:

Hakuoki: this is the most popular otome franchise in the west by far (even the non otome spinoff action game got localized. imagine) the most recent edition of the games in on vita (maybe steam? i havent checked) and its the combo of kyoto winds and edo blossoms. the reason theres two of them is because the game has SO MUCH CONTENT there was no way they could localize it as it was and possibly make a profit, so they ended up splitting it. Some people dislike the protag bc shes a little too yamato nadeshiko for their tastes but it never bugged me. it’s got a lot of action, historical intrigue, theres like? 13? romance candidates as of kw/eb so you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. plus, since so many version of hakuoki got localized the older versions tend to go on sale whenever aksys’ stuff is on sale so you can get one of the older version for real cheap if you wanna dip your toes.

Code Realize: this is probably my favorite otome game and one of my favorite vns in general. the art is gorgeous, the characters are so fleshed out and well developed (even the side characters), all the narratives whirl together with intrigue and drama and the protagonist has a lot of personality. Theres not a single character i dislike here. i think the ps4 version comes in a dual pack with future blessings, which is a direct sequel focusing on lovey-dovey marriage stuff with some more serious stories too. 

norn9: norn9 is really unique because it has three entirely different protags to play as, and each one has three different boys to pursue. this affords for them to have a lot of love interests while still keeping the MC’s arcs feeling fresh. theres one route i dont like but 8/9 aint bad! nice art, good writing, intriguing world building. fully recommend. 

anniversary no kuni no alice: so this ones pretty different in that its a doujin game that was never officially localized (ok, there was a mobile port that got released in the west but calling that a translation...... is generous) but the fantranslation finally got finished like? last year? recentlyish. despite its humble routes it made a huge splash in japan and is definitely genre defining. it also isnt as tender and sweet as some of the other games i listed, it fully embodies the charm of alice in wonderland where nearly everyone is an oddball whackjob/asshole (and dont worry, the protagonist can throw a punch) and has an old fashioned affection point and date system which make it feel really old school. its not an eroge but these characters absolutely fuck, which is nice if you want some self indulgent steamy stuff. that said i fully recommend opening up the debug menu and just slapping max affection on your chosen boy bc the low budget, slightly dated mechanics can be kind of a slog. theres also like a shit load of secret events that you need to monitor flags for so you might as well just save yourself the trouble and fudge the numbers a bit. and since the company that made it is fucking dead its 100% free! rad.

collarxmalice: this one is a bit weird bc im more recommending it for the story bc the romance elements didnt really do it for me? like full disclaimer this is a me problem, and even though the romance elements didnt click with me the routes are all still very well written (except.... for one.... who i was expecting to like the most..... aaaaaaaaaaaaa) . the heroine is a cop so shes very action focused and the game even forces you to do your own crime solving, and its easy but its still more immersive than a lot of other games try to be. it has a very strong story and aesthetic and even though it bounced off me im still looking forward to the fandisc releasing on switch so i still really enjoyed it. it was met with rave reviews and was even an office favorite of the translators working on it.

if youre still unsure i suggest just checking out which game has a cast you find appealing, theyre the main reason your here afterall

Friggin Muchigoro from the sixth One Piece movie! The random half fish half plant probably some human in there somewhere dude who has a pet giant death goldfish and is generally the cutest man on earth

AND THEN THAT MOVIE INCREDIBLY TRAUMATIZED ME

Seriously i still cannot believe this movie even EXISTS, its such a bizarre form of..like..trolling you into accidentally watching a really good movie??? Posters and preproduction material and the art style and the actual name of the thing = “oh its a cute adventure about everyone playing goofy carnival games on carnival island im sure this villain Baron Carnival will absolutely not jumpscare me with something such as for example a sympathetic comic relief goldfish friend remembering that he’s already dead and reliving the process of drowning again while on dry land and you the viewer have to watch every second of it”

SERIOUSLY FUCKIN HELL I STILL MOURN YOU, MUCHIGORO

This film actually turned out to be a FUCKIN AMAZING lovecraftian horror thing where the Fun And Innocent Carnival Games slowly manipulate our heroes into bickering amoungst each other and pick them off one by one with just the excuse of ‘oh he totally abandoned you he wasnt really your friend after all’ (MEANWHILE THE ADORABLE REINDEER MASCOT IS GASPING FOR AIR AS HE’S PINCUSHIONED BY ARROWS IN THE BACKGROUND)

And then fuckin.. super fancy cute mr baron carnival man is actually sacrificing everyone who loses his carnival games to a fuckin terrifying evil spirit of the forest who’s fused to the flesh of his shoulder and whispering dark thoughts into his very bloodstream. And you get to see a fucked up abomination of twisted human flesh fused into a plant stem while our cute happy-go-lucky protagonist cries out that he has no reason to live now his friends are dead and its like WHAT THE ACTUAL JESUS FUCK IS HAPPENING

Oh and at the same time its SURPRISINGLY DEEP and evil carnival dude has a really sympathetic reason behind it all. You see, EVERYONE ELSE ON THE ISLAND IS DEAD! once upon a time he really was just a goofy cute carnival themed pirate dude with a big ol family of funny buddies. And then they all DIED HORRIBLY and this forbidden hellbeast made a pact with him to ressurect them if he murdered other people in return. Yes, everyone having adorable lil flowers and leafs on their head was DARK FORESHADOWING ALL ALONG

So that gets us back around to this super memorable goddamn character! Poor muchigoro!! he’s just a funny doofus who loves his pet fishie and also apparantly his boss. Like he’s really loyal and hero-worshippy to baron festival mc evilplanman, and baron festival mc evilplanman looks so goddamn GENUINELY FORLORN every damn second theyre together. There’s so many foreshadows where this dude is like ‘ha ha isnt every day wonderful when we’re together, im so happy you all enjoy these funny carnival games i made for you to all never be sad ever again’. *looks like he’s fuckin dying inside* jesus christ seriously are we really doing a plot about a suicidal man who lost everyone he ever loved and now he locks himself up with these fake illusions of what they used to be like, struggling with the fact he knows its wrong to kill others to sustain their life but he loves them so much he just cant stop himself AND WHO SAW THIS COMING FROM GODDAMN GOLDFISH HUGS BEANMAN

So yeah GOLDFISH HUGS BEANMAN is your first mega scarring moment hinting at the dark plot. He almost accidentally tells the heroes about whats going on, since he doesnt actually know he’s dead and ends up stumbling into a gap in his memory. And then the Ominous Forest Sentience just fuckin.. revokes his life permissions. Dude drops dead for getting too close to knowing the truth. Incredibly graphically. And then even worse is that he just reappears again later on, back in comic relief mode and apparantly unable to remember anything. He’s all “haha boss thats so weird i fell asleep on the job! I’m totally fine now tho!” and boss dude is like *bittersweet look* “i’m so glad i cant bear to see you without a smile on your face” *casually glances over the fact he just fuckin fed a guy’s soul to the dessicated corpse of his best friend and he just got back up”

And theres loads of equally depressing stuff with all the other equally adorable buddies!! There’s the ring toss attraction with a trio of adorable tiny elderly folks in funny frog costumes, this weird ice hockey/cooking competition combo game with a big scary buff dude who has a soft spot for bunny hair clips, and A LITERAL TEN YEAR OLD CHILD WHO WAS ALSO AMOUNGST THE DEAD

Oh goddd, Gappa is the one that traumatized me second much next to Muchigoro. He’s a cute kid in a goofy DJ costume but also he seems to be the one whose sense of self has most been eroded by becoming a soul-eating hellbeast? He’s introduced adorably trying to steal the hat of one of the protagonists cos he wants to be all cool fashion, and then suddenly out of nowhere his eyes go red and he murders the dude for saying no. And this wasnt even under orders from the boss dude or anything, boss dude just turns up to find the poor kid still staring off into space like he doesnt know what happened. He fuckin ate a dude’s soul and crushed the skull of his friend who tried to avenge him, and was pincushioned by a bunch of swords and just casually pulled them out of his ribcage. So he’s just sitting there disassociating the fuck out! “What did i just do, why did i do that, why did he cut me and i dont bleed?” And boss guy holds him and comforts him and tells him obvious lies about how he’s..just a very strong kid. He’s just such a great fighter that he totally must have dodged all that guy’s attacks. Don’t worry. And its such a brief scene but you get the sense that this must have happened a million times, the kid keeps accidentally ‘breaking’ people and getting close to realizing he’s a walking corpse and because of his father figure trying to shield him from the realization its just fucking up his mental state even more and he’s become the perfect host for the fuckin EVIL NIGHTMARE FOREST GOD THING

Anyway eventually we get to the final confrontation involving every one of our heroes being soul-nommed except one, and he’s barely able to drag his arrow-riddled body across the battlefield to keep on fighting. And the last you see of all the comic relief corpse dudes is them being confused why they feel so sleepy, and dropping to the floor one by one. You get the sense this whole thing is really fuckin desperate, the boss dude must have been running out of people to feed to the horrifying corpse machine and he’s had to deal with his friends slowly dying around him. And there’s this really messed up moment where all the heroes getting soul-nabbed is presented as a HAPPY MOMENT for the cute comic relief guys. You see them all come back to life and be like ‘yay another perfect day at perfect carnival island with all our very non dead friends!’ And then when the hero finally wins and saves everyone, its punctuated by a depressing note of all the funny dudes simultaneously vanishing into dust forever. leaving behind nothing but a bunch of plants growing out of a pile of empty clothes. Like the scariest damn part is how its left ambiguous whether the creepy ass forest god was even really capable of ressurecting the dead or if it was just puppeting a bunch of dolls and imitating what this man remembers of his dead friends. though the fact they were able to act on their own free will and almost mess up the plan sometimes would imply there’s at least some level of the original person still left there. but still theres also the whole freaky scene of Murder Child Does Not Remember Murdering All These People so..yeah. Horrifying ambiguity.

And then it just ends with poor boss carnival dude looking at his bloodstained hands desperately trying to hold together the dead corpse of this god that promised to keep his friends alive. He fuckin HOLDS INTESTINES IN HIS HANDS WHILE SOBBING! And what super extra sucks is that they dont give him any sort of resolution of getting to move on and atone now he’s free of that thing’s control. He just desperately tries to backstab the hero at the last moment cos he’s just so lost in grief for his friends, and thus ends up dying. And the last you see of him is him floating in the void while he hears the sound of the shipwreck that killed his friends so long ago, and fuckin CUTE VOICE OF FUNNYMAN MUCHIGORO welcomes him to the goddamn afterlife. While crying that he wishes his boss was able to move on without him and live a little longer instead.

i am sobbing into my keyboard just remembering this, seriously i dont even fuckin LIKE One Piece yet im somehow a giant fan of this one singular filler arc written by some other author. WHERE IS MY ENTIRE DAMN HUNDRED EPISODE ANIME ABOUT THIS PLOTLINE?? it has fuckin NOTHING to do with One Piece either, you coulda replaced the protagonists with the protagonists of any other anime and it woulda worked just as well. I'd like to request the brothers and their opinions on whether demons and humans can fully understand each other's perspective re: morality, life... etc. please! :D Do they think themself and the MC are too fundamentally different to comprehend where each other's coming from?? Could work towards understanding it with effort?? Aren't that different really? Depends on the human?

THE BROTHERS on whether or not humans and demons could understand each other

Lucifer:

Well no but there are a few who come close. He thinks that, in order to truly understand a demon's nature and way of thinking, you have to be super open minded and understanding. You also have to realize that, in the long run, a lot of a demon's nature wont change. They are created to be cruel, vicious, and destructive, but they do care about certain things and are highly intelligent. The same counts for the other end. A demon would have to be willing to learn about humans, with an open mind, which probably proves to be more difficult than their counterpart. So no they wont ever fully understand each other, but there are a few individuals who come close.

Mammon:

He wants to believe that is is very well possible, but the more he thinks about it, especially with himself as an example, the more difficult it becomes. A lot of demons are mischievous and manipulative and they tend to take advantage of humans. On the contrary, a lot of humans are foolish and honestly make dumb decisions; this is never a good mix. Still, he likes to believe, much like Lucifer, that there's certain individuals out there who have an open mind and can accept these differences.

Leviathan:

No. Absolutely not. Anime and Video Games aside, theres not much humanity and demons have in common. The whole reason the demon race exists is because they despise humanity, because they're different and dumb and weak. A human can barely comprehend the power if their own body, let alone something supernatural. Things that are normal to both species individually are insane to the opposite side. So no, he doesnt believe they could ever truly understand each other.

Satan:

Also a no here. He himself has a hard time understanding humanity, and thats coming from one of the smartest beings in existence. Their knowledge and ability to survive is held onto by the thinnest strings of life. Its a miracle the species hasnt been wiped out yet, honestly. Demons thrive on survival, on being better than the next, and eliminating anything that stands in their way to success, whereas humans are cowards; they cheat, they lie, they screw themselves over and for what? In the end they, still, gained absolutely nothing.

Asmodeus:

He does believe so, yes, but it requires a lot of patience and, again, a very open mind, from both sides. A human must understand a demons rather dark nature and be okay with such and a demon must understand the internal struggle between good and evil that humans to through. He's not so much worried about not finding an open minded human, hes more worried about finding a non-manipulative demon. Its in their nature to take advantage of a humans weak and struggling mind, thats how possessions happen. But anyway, its not impossible, just difficult. So ultimately, he does believe they could understand each other.

Beelzebub:

He also believes its possible but mainly because of Lilith. Of course, its a different story since Lilith was still an angel when the human fell for her, but it gives him hope that humans could also, potentially, give demons a chance. We're not all bad, he always says. Yes we torture and we have fun messing with humans, but not all of us are out to kill. Some of us are, deep down, lonely and need someone. Humans have proven time and time again that they can show compassion and understanding. He, personally, likes to stay optimistic and he's open to learn more about humanity as time goes on, though he must say that he could not shake off his demonic nature that easily.

Belphegor:

He wants to say yes but he knows that it's a no. Humans and demons, theyre not supposed to get along. They're supposed to hate each other. In a sense, he believes, humans were created as the rope in a tuck of war between angels and demons; "who makes the other team fall". Humans are insignificant in the long run and are sure to run extinct. Supernatural beings studied them for eons and humans have barely scratched the surface of what lies beyond them because they're too much over their head to lay aside themselves and look out for another. So no, they could never truly understand.
