I feel like Bracken/Brackendra had the potential to be like. Not Weird if Brandon Mull actually wrote it that way. Like if he had actually made it so that Bracken was actually mentally 17 and not a full grown unicorn (see: Bracken having his third horn and reaching "maturity") and made Kendra, well, not 14 when they met. Brandon Mull seems to go back and forth on whether or not its weird for them to have feelings for eachother (it is, at least the way Brandon wrote it). In ROTDS when Ronodin proposes to Kendra, she's like "omg ew,,ur so much older than me" and then. Calls Bracken her boyfriend. You know. The guy thats the same age as Ronodin.

When Bracken first appeared in the prison with Seth, I actually really liked him. He was witty and actually had some personality. But then when Kendra met him, all his personality became reduced to "ok guys let’s give Kendra a straight love interest because we killed the last one in the previous book". I just feel like the two Brackens we met are so different in terms of how they interact with the story. Sorry for ranting but as a previous Brackendra girlie its just interesting to think about

hiii i made another rezero spotify playlist again.

so this goes through subarus Entire character arc from arc 1 all the way roughly to arc 8!! gonna put notes under the cut.

theres a few repeat songs from my other playlists, mainly from the emilia playlist and the other subaru playlist i made, but i keep it to a minimum!! these songs are important okay.

i use several rezero songs because. well a lot of official rezero songs are from subaru's pov if you look at the lyrics + play in certain crucial moments. and also theyre bops and this is my playlist so i do what i want HAH

also in general i wanted to choose a blend of. more depressing songs. but also more upbeat ones. and a mixture of both of those. subaru has a rollercoaster of an arc hah i had to get a specific Tone here.

the first three songs are the intro songs!! the ones that summarize subarus entire character <3 okay also i know "the whole being dead thing" is an absolutely hilarious choice for a subaru playlist. even in just the song title alone. but LMAO i stand by that choice. 1000%.

"waving through a window" is like. just a bit pre-arc 1, then "connect" is the arc 1 to arc 2 transition

"relive" and "peace and love on the planet earth" mark memory snow and the end of arc 2 overall. "all i've ever known" is in this section because of remsuba growing close together. "ceilings" and "same boat" are in this section because i think they kind of fit the specific kind of Yearning subaru has. just in the sense that rbd undos time hes spent with the others; he loves them, but do they love him back? he knows them, but they dont know him. that sort of thing. i had to acknowledge it ;-;;;

"wrecking ball" (yes i know its a very fitting song title aljsldf) to "mr loverman" are arc 3!! also yes i know theres a lot of songs from the show crazy ex-girlfriend in this section but like. hear me out okay those songs fit. i think it's easy to tell what theyre referring to with the song titles alone also alksdjfljksfd

(and yes "what is this feeling?" is referencing subaru and julius's unfortunate first meeting. i couldnt resist.)

"realize" (this is specifically the cover that subarus va did!!) to "hopes and dreams" is arc 4. "look whos inside again" and "this is me trying" can be seen as references to subaru's first trial also.

"haven't you noticed (i'm a star" to "fightsong" are the transition from arc 4 to arc 5. and yes i had to include the song "boy bi".

"theater D" to "zero to hero" is the rest of arc 5. and yes theater D is an extremely good song okay it deserves to be in this playlist twice. the second time just represents sirius fucking shit up <3 "i see stars" is supposed to represent subaru's heroic speech to the entire city!! "immortals" is also in reference to subaru learning reinhard can Also die and come back.

"soldier, poet, king" is the transition into arc 6. you can also see the "soldier, poet, king" as julius, subaru, and emilia.

"demons" to "soap" is the rest of arc 6 <3 and if you so desire it you can see "at my back" and "what else can i do?" as julisuba (platonic or otherwise) songs.

"collusion" and "malachite's theme" are the transition into arc 7-8 and the rest of the songs that follow after are the rest of arc 7-8!! "run boy run" marks the start of the child subaru arc yes.

"your reality" is the finale song... i know it's like a pretty calming choice for a subaru playlist aljsdlf but i feel like the lyrics are fitting for the entirety of his character arc and the possible direction it might take yes!!

Chuunin exams timeline

introductions, team training

trip + boat ride. Kakashi gets to come along and Karin spends a chunk of time trying to corner him

Land of Snow + trains, and then Yukigakure. Might put a discussion about the land of snow -> land of spring thing and how yukigakure is going through a little bit of a crisis because depending on how that machine works, it will seriously destabilize a LOT of their jutsu.

First exam is intel gathering/psychological fuckery

idea 1: teams are separated and led to believe that the chuunin exam was actually a Trap and they’re now surrounded in enemy territory, OR, separated and corned by snow nin who want them to give up details on other teams? im not 100% on this. I still need to think on it.

Second exam is wilderness survival in the snow. lmao. good luck. Instead of a scroll, the name of the game is Bounty Hunting. Each team is given a list of targets from the other entrants and they have to bring back one of them alive, while also not losing any of their own members. But also some of the targets are actually chuunin plants, so better hope you were paying attention to who all was actually there at the briefing! (I want one of the teams to accidentally hit a chuunin plant… and then still manage to capture them ANYWAYS. Possibly Gai’s team, because they are maniacs.)

I kind of want Karin to figure out how to use her chains here in a moment of high stress just for maximum “Oh fuck” reactions. Also because they would be really convenient for prisoner transport.

Also speaking of Karin, yes there IS a team from grass taking the exams too! isn’t that fun :)

Third exam is standard tournament arc, obviously. I’m waffling back and forth on it, but I might have it so that instead of 1v1 fights, its 2v2 fights, with each genin “randomly” matched up with someone else from their village (the OTHER reason for the 4 man squads, to have even numbers in the case of only one team from a village getting to the final round).

If I go this route, both Kiba and Hasami get to team up. Snow wanted them to be at a disadvantage because they both have the same fighting style and so any weaknesses would be multiplied… however, uh. The inuzuka’s whole thing is combination attacks. Do you know what’s worse than fang over fang? Fang over Fang over Fang over Fang.

I want to have Killer B’s team show up because Theyre the only named characters from Kumo that we know. Also this gives me an excuse to bring in Karui, who I like.

I also want to have someone from Iwa with Explosion Release, albeit not as stupidly overpowered as deidara, because Explosion Release is like Iwa’s main crazy bloodlimit. (I might branch out into other shounen and just make them a bakugou expy???)

(in fact, I almost certainly will, because the idea made me giggle)

-Also because its land of snow, SOMEONE is getting that bullshit chakra armor from the movie. The main weakness is the fact that they short out if two sets of armor come into contact, but with only one armor set that is less of an issue! Unfortunately, Sakura gets to fight them, and they are going through the wall. She already knows how it works and HER jutsu (punching people through walls) requires very little chakra so there’s nothing for them to steal.

you're right that Mikey gets kind of left behind though, which isn't ENTIRELY everyone else's fault to be fair. Mikey kind of leaves himself behind too. he spent so much time angry at their situation that now that things have changed he kind of just expects himself to be happier/better automatically. and he goes a bit crazy with the freedom for a while which makes it hard to talk to him about his emotions, because he SEEMS to be really happy all the time! That's good, right?

I think he's also a little emotionally illiterate when it comes to himself. he can sniff out other people's emotions just fine but when he looks at himself its a bit harder for him to tell. unless the answer is obvious (like being mad because splinter yelled at him or something).

so yea Mikey kinda just doesn't know what to do with himself. which is funny cause that's the same boat all his brothers are in, in one way or another. and they could probably really easily relate to each other if they'd just!! talk about it!!

his life mission was to convince his brothers that their dad sucks ass, and now they all agree with him! and they've all moved out together! so why are things still hard??? maybe he should do some underage drinking about it or something.

its nothing concrete but i just like ffxiv...

some spoilers for everything - including endings shadowbringers and endwalker (everyone should play shadowbringers its so good)

i imagine its like an isekai just for funsies, so dont and did have to adjust to not having their abilities. and also being turned into the ffxiv races. they basically wake up on the cart/boat (i think alphinaud and alisae will be going to limsa via the boat in this au... idk if i'll ever write it but if its something ppl wanna see i am Willing...). tho they all have the echo. technically dungeons are meant to be 4 player but for our intents and purposes we're gonna ignore that. its My AU i get to make the rules

as for jobs... splendont is a marauder/warrior, splendid is a gladiator/paladin, flippy is an arcanist - for jobs he'd be a scholar and fliq would be summoner (tho fliq would also do reaper i think)

idk what the twins would start as but theyd end up switching to rogue/ninja asap, tho lifty would go machinist in heavensward and ive toyed with viper shifty. probably archer for a starting class just for gridania rep. i started at maurader on lifty just for easier access to rogue but that doesnt really matter. rip to splendid who is all alone in ul'dah.

now races... the twins are miqo'te, specifically keepers of the moon (bc thats what i made lifty)... maybe wildwood elezen. and flippy... xaela au ra (im an au ra lover... my main's an au ra and i have a secondary character thats also an au ra who i made to pair with estinien bc i like him was the second option for shipping my main w b4 i went with my beloved g'raha. i was gonna put a picture of my main, honoka miyashiro, here but i forgor. lovingly known as honk.) i was thinking au ra for super bros but i think flippy au ra is better. still not sold on elezen tho. maybe hyur? 23rd the 2nd benchmark comes out maybe i'll make them in that? theyre gonna questioned for their names but... oh well.

ive done arr a few times but ive only played the 2.1+ patches very little (im not done with post endwalker yet either i just started 6.4 but i started levelling reaper after the last trial) so i dont remember Too much (im gonna new game plus some things + i could stream ffxiv lifty's adventures) but i do remember many key moments. i'll put a cut here bc im gonna get into story events

i pulled up to the inn to look at the unending journey. but the openings are basically the same except flippy and dont are working together + the twins are too, and the city-states all send out envoys to each other for funny 'oh hey we all had the same idea lmao' moments and they all get directed to go to investigate sastasha (not b4 the twins take up rogue, getting disappointed when they realize they're actually supposed to maintain the code) where they all meet again and everyone is like 'yay thank god you're okay' and of course after copperbell and beating up some dick, all the scions show up and say "hey you're pretty cool join our club :)'

okay i haven't thought too much about story things in main arr + what grand company they join. but. i think if i go the route of different events being focused more on different characters in place of the wol, splendid being the one to be framed for poisoning nanamo might work best bc he does start in ul'dah + being framed like that kinda fucks with him mentally - 'i should've been more diligent, i shouldn't have just picked something up and kept it, how could i have been so blind?' and being considered traitorous + seeing all that happened at the bloody banquet is. well it's... a lot, especially for him (though he probably thinks he should be used to it considering canon htf but in see what develops he did get sick when he saw mime's body. i think. may in fact be misremembering).

splendont holding the twins close to him as they want into ishgard bc its cold and they can barely see through the snow... and the twins thinking 'we've done something good for once, we were celebrated as heroes and this is what we get?'

stormblood i dont have too many thoughts on either but if i go the route of flippy (or well fliqpy really) being the one to be zenos's main rival... i think fliq and zenos would have fun banter. also he would 100% do the reckless thing with yugiri and try to kill him with very little plan.

i think when there's split paths they do split up (aka at the beginning of expansions where there's different quest chains to start with) but thats all i've really thought about so far regarding some beginnings... i do know that i want splendont and the twins to be the ones to go to amh araeng bc them witnessing tesleen would be - that is if i even end up having flippy and splendid in shadowbringers bc they might stay back to help tataru and stuff... but having did there would make it a bit more painful so i dont know. splendont is considered the shard of azem here, (dont ask how if its an isekai its just how things seem to be rolling) and the one feo ul bonds with so it all ends up working out. also the exarch barely managing to bring all 3 (or 5) over when he finally gets it right is funny.

back on the subject of them having seen tesleen transform, it genuinely freaked them the fuck out and fearing it could happen to dont, lifty and shifty probably beg splendont to let them dispell some of the lightwardens' aether especially when y'shtola mistakes him for a sin eater and after qitana ravel where y'shtola is sure it is being absorbed and tells him to inform her of any side effects. but splendont says 'Absolutely Not. i can deal with it i'm not letting Anything happen to you.'

after malikh's well when he starts having pain and getting sick they beg him again, but he again puts his foot down. they fight about it, and the twins spend the night in a different room in pendants (they cant see ardbert anyways and have just thought splendont was seeing things).

things are tense throughout kholusia, and its very clear that lifty and shifty are afraid of what will happen when they kill the final lightwarden. then their fears are proven true when innocence is killed and splendont starts to turn because he cant contain the light and the sky they worked so hard to bring night back to reverts to the eternal day.

and despite the tension, despite the pain, he looks at them and says 'i promise... i'll be fine. i didn't want this to happen to you.'

'you fucking moron, this wouldn't have happened... if we shared the light,' shifty retorts but he and lifty are too afraid to get close, especially with urianger being weird. and all this time theyve gone with this in hopes of finding a way home, and now they might lose splendont and it feels like they'll never get home.

there's a lot of emotions going on with the exarch reveal bc they also dont want him to sacrifice himself just for splendont either but theres no other choice is there and then emet-selch comes in and that little bit of hope is dashed. and though ryne delays the inevitable it is still, at that moment, inevitable. they do their best to help the scions look for a way to save him but it's very clear that they're pessimistic, heartbroken. afraid that it's true that everyone they hold dear to them is destined to be taken away. if theyd fought harder, if they could have been more convincing...

i have more thoughts about shadowbringers (mostly with the twins being afraid splendont is taking up emet's offer) but i'll skip to the end so if i do write it i dont end up spoiling everything. but after ardbert fuses with splendont, lifty and shifty join him to fight hades alongside whoever else the exarch summoned... and when all is said and done and it's revealed that splendont is no longer being corrupted by the light, after they return to the source and have reported to tataru and krile, and they take a moment to breathe... they plead with him to let them bear some of his burdens, just as they let him do. even if it's for their sake, neither of them want him to do anything like that ever again, and they make him promise. they all cry about it, even dont, because Fuck that was probably so stressful. he does tell them what happened with ardbert though.

endwalker... endwalker. ultima thule in particular. while fliq would be the one to fight zenos at the end if i go the 'everyone has a part to play', and probably the one that gets posessed in 'in from the cold' i think i want dont to be the last one standing in ultima thule and extend it a little bit, in particular so lifty and shifty can sacrifice themselves for him. and at the very end when they are alone again he tells them not to scare him like that again. lifty responds with. 'it was like that for us too. that's why we made that promise. your burden was to go forward, and we helped you bear it.'

'we came back anyways,' shifty adds, but he 100% expected to just. be dead forever. theres a lot of crying again. ffxiv makes me emotional so it makes the characters emotional.

also in elpis splendont being like 'i am a familiar of azem.' and shifty confidently goes 'yeah and we're his familiars' and lifty facepalms. 'thats absolutely not how it works, shifty.'

of course none of this is fully set in stone. flippy and splendid might not even be included at all bc a lot of my thoughts are mostly dont lifty and shifty save for zenos n fliq (if i go this route, one of the twins would be made a pugilist and start in ul'dah) bc i dont have many ideas for the twins to have wol major moments other than thinking about them being framed for poisoning nanamo instead of splendid. this also got really long... i'm gonna have to do this arent i? ffxiv au yes or no poll when.

I think that the dynamic of them both growing up alongside Kinn is so interesting. Kim is resentful of Big in many ways for essentially fitting where Kim used to, beside his older brother. Big is obviously in love with Kinn and can't tell him, but while Kim maintains this whole snarky moral superiority over the fact that Big is in unrequited love with Kinn; Kim is essentially in almost the exact same boat. He loves his brother from afar but cant actually bring himself to tell him outright. Thematic parallels my beloved.

So for context: This got cut because the entire context for the piece changed - I decided the fic worked better as a stand-alone where nothing had ever happened between Kim and Big before BUT once upon a time this was the second chapter of a two parter: in this scenario: months before this, Kim and Big has Done Bits in Kim's office and then never spoken about it again. Now theyre drinking together, Kim's spilled his drink and Big has just cleaned it up. Kim is desperate for some kind of distraction and drinking together hasn't proven distracting enough.

Kim dips two of his fingertips into the amber liquid in his hand. The ice is cool and slick against his fingertips as he chases it around the glass. Kim feels an almost impish smile spreading across his features. “You missed a bit.” Kim says. “What?” “You missed a bit.” Kim says, Big stares back, almost incredulous. It looks good on him. Kim stirs the glass, ice clinking softly against the sides before languidly raising his hand. He lets the whisky drip from his fingertips onto the table.  “See?” He grins. Big, looks as if he's a drop away from muttering something else under his breath but watches, rapt, as Kim holds his gaze and slowly licks the whisky from his own fingertips. It’s silent for a while. “Do you think about it?” Kim asks, eyes half lidded, letting his eyes rake over Big where he’s seated in the chair. Big holds the glass instinctively against his chest. He half expects Big to play dumb, to glance off at the doorway and stand again. To straighten the creases in his suit and leave. Kim would let him this time. Big cocks his head, blinking at him slowly, holding Kim's eye with the kind of defiance that could only be brought on by an awful cocktail of alcohol and anxiety. “Do you?” Big asks in answer. The smallest of smirks hides behind the rim of his glass, only visible in the crease of his eye as they flicker off to the side. There’s a slight sheen to his bottom lip that the whisky has left. “Careful.” Kim warns smoothly, just to watch him shrink. Only he doesn’t. Big straightens in the chair.

and APPARENTLY me and my cousin are part of the armed detective agency now???? and last night, we had to make dinner for everyone, and we did kind of badly but fukuzawa was proud of both of us or something. and everyone else (who wasnt the actual characters, this was like if the agency was just a regular police force that hires children for odd jobs sometimes?) was laughing at him for it. so i made the connection it had smth to do with the fact fukuzawa cares about the both of us and those bitch ass guys who laughed

and then i told my cousin that, like "hey uhh so we're probably kidnapped." and he was like "no we arent lmaoo.... Oh wait. yeah we probably are." so we went into our shared room and really quietly discussed the situation, bc the people in the room next to us were trying to listen in and there wasnt exactly anywhere else to go, and then we started walking while just casually whispering

and then our walk took us to a different person in the hotels room and it was KUNIKIDA??? and looking back katai was probably with him bc it seems to be 2 to a room + there were computers and servers and shite all over in his room 💀 and he was basically like. "What are you doing here." what are YOU doing here dude??

Trial fics are weird

Weirder when Catra gets off Scott free yet Hordak has to do it

Even weirder when Catra is ok with it. Like in my opinion Catra would be calling out Princess BS for not putting her on trial too.

That was exactly what my own scrapped trial fic was about. The first fic i worked on after finishing the show.

Catra, Entrapta, and Scorpia get told they will be pardoned, but they are apprehensive about this, especially Catra. Meanwhile Hordak faces full trial and is blamed for the whole war, as well as crimes against the other three. He proudly accepts responsibility for everything, of course, believing this is his fate.

In this concept he'd actually killed Entrapta's parents and a number of her people and she was the LAST PERSON to find out DURING the trial, very dramatic lmao, but when Hordak was sentenced to "death by exile" she causes a courtroom disaster by saying that if he's going to face capital punishment then she should too. Also she slapped him for killing her family. One of the reasons i scrapped this fic is cos i no longer liked this scene, it's not very Entrapta and it was too convoluted, but I wanted to make her angry/upset about something for once. And here she's going "I made the portal and the Horde's death machines so I share equal responsibility for the worst crimes, either you give Hordak a second chance to right his wrongs like you did for me or we both go down together".

This causes problems because NOBODY wants to sentence Entrapta, but there's too much public desire to get Hordak done in, and they need to do SOMETHING. Do they just ignore her plea or exile both?

Then the actual most epic part of the fic is that after seeing Entrapta throw herself to the wolves in a bid to save Hordak, Catra goes "Fuck it" and joins in. She jumps down and holds her hand in solidarity and say "I was the co-leader of the Horde as it razed Salineas and waged war against Brightmoon, I brought us further than ever before, you can't give HIM all the credit for MY hard work!!!"

THIS is where shit hits the fan, and you get a Horde "I am spartacus" moment of everyone from the Horde joining in to say they refuse pardon and were warriors in the war effort, they refuse to be patronised by the crown.

Anyway the compromise is Micah sentences them to "exile... to Beast Island" and Entrapta goes "Oh, Beast Island? Why didn't you say so--" and Catra punches her on the arm so shell shut up and theyre not so much exiled as sentenced to a short term cleanup as a whole fucking army.

There were lots of holes in this idea, like how Entrapta's parents would be killed without her ever knowing, or whether the Horde (including Catra) should stick up for Hordak. The biggest obstacle turned out to be my own interest, I read a much better (if similarly contentious) trial fic called The Six Limitations of the Truth Spell and decided that my ideas were very boring and I didn't want to write a courtroom at all. However I wrote most of the start of this fic and it's saved on my drive.

The spirit was that I don't think Catra or Entrapta (or Glimmer) would stand for Hordak getting scapegoated for everything and given capital punishment. They'd fight against it because they are in the same boat.

Best GMs and coaches in the league ACC to you?

we can start with gms because coaching is a bit more complicated. best gms in the league is easy to look at because like, who has a good team? who has had a consistently good team? whose locker room is the most cohesive, whose coaching staff is the best? who is the best at acquiring and keeping the best players, coaches, staff, etc? and you can see that in the way teams play. 

(putting this under the cut because it got long. and i mean Long.)

so, in no particular order: kyle dubas (leafs), steve yzerman (red wings, i will explain this later), don waddell (canes), julien brisebois (lightning), joe sakic (avs), and kelly mccrimmon/george mcphee (golden knights) (god i still hate that name and also will explain this later too) are the best in the league in my opinion. honorable mention to marc bergevin, who has held onto his job much longer than he arguably should have, but still has a decent team on the ice and a decent coaching staff, although the french rule does severely handicap them (i understand why it exists but it does, it just does). 

david poile (preds) is the longest tenured gm in the league (has been the preds gm since fucking 1997, thats insane, thats legit before i was born, what the fuck), and i do genuinely think he is very good at his job, and that he is very hockey smart, but oh boy have his recent decisions been suspect as hell, and that reflects in the state of his team. doug wilson (sharks), who is the second longest tenured gm in the nhl, is in the exact same boat (the karlsson deal is a nightmare, and also did he just forget that his star core was gonna get old and retire or ??).

with dubas, waddell, brisebois, sakic, and mccrimmon/mcphee all have the same basic strengths: they draft well, they have a fundamental understanding of their team structure and how to manage public perception of the team and everything that implies, and they have two fingers on the pulse of their locker room at all times. im not going to pretend to know as much about sakic and mccrimmon/mcphee as i do the eastern gms, but it doesnt take much to figure it out. look at the avs, and their locker room, the success theyve found after being dead fucking last in the league. look at the knights and their incredible success that theyve found after literally not existing before 2017. ive talked about dubas a lot on my blog, but its incredibly easy to see that waddell and brisebois do the same shit he does, and i can do a deep dive on them if asked. bergevin has moments of brilliance, like the suzuki trade and acquiring caufield and anderson, but things like kotkaniemi’s development and their entire blue line give me a massive pause, which is why he’s not in the main list. he’s a good gm. he’s just not the best.

in regards to steve yzerman: you have to understand that this is the man that built the tampa bay lightning as we know them. this man was gm of the bolts until fucking 2018. tampa bay has been a monster in the eastern conference for years, BECAUSE of the work steve yzerman put in. his team set the franchise record for wins, and he was the first and is the only lightning gm to have won gm of the year. look up the 17-18 roster. it is, essentially, the roster that won them the cup last year. make no mistake, i think brisebois is great, and hes on the list for a reason, but the biggest part of brisebois’ success was steve yzerman’s incredible hockey mind. brisebois essentially had to sell off a fourth of his roster, and the lightning are still a top team in their division and in the league, and thats why he’s there (it is so incredibly easy to fuck shit up post cup win), but the brisebois lightning would not exist without steve yzerman, plain and simple.

what steve yzerman is doing in detroit should be watched very, very closely by every single person in the hockey world. youre fucking nuts if youre not paying attention to them, not gonna lie. the mantha trade was excellent, if really sad if you know even a bit about the wings, but the amount of draft picks steve yzerman has amassed and the way he’s using the prospects and players he already has is really fucking admirable. mike babcock left the red wings organization absolutely in tatters, and i think, honestly, it was always steve yzerman’s plan to go home to detroit and rebuild. if there is anyone who is going to strike absolute gold this draft year, it is steve yzerman. watch the red wings, i am telling you, keep a beat on detroit. they are going to be good. its not an if, its a when.

(real quick on the knights situation: mcphee was the first gm of the knights, and was also president of hockey ops at the same time, and then in 2019 mcphee said he was just gonna focus on his job as president, but we all know hes still an integral part of the way the knights are run, and he and mccrimmon have kinda been building the knight together since the beginning anyway bc mccrimmon was originally mcphee’s agm. so. thats why theyre together)

as for coaches, it’s very simple. rod brind’amour (canes), sheldon keefe (leafs, yes im biased, we’ll get into it), jared bednar (avs), joel quenneville (panthers), jon cooper (lightning), barry trotz (isles), and mike sullivan (pens).

(disclaimer: obviously coaching is done as a team, and assistants and specialist coaches and staff are all very important, but the head coaches set the tone and organize the entire machine, if you will, so im going to be talking about head coaches as if theyre the entire coaching staff. its just easier this way im sorry)

im gonna just start with the easy ones: barry trotz, mike sullivan, and jon cooper have been in the league for years. cooper is the longest tenured coach in the nhl for a reason (again, just look at the tampa bay lightning. its the gm’s job to make the coach’s life easier and the coach’s job to make the gm’s life easier, and this is one of the prime examples of it in the league. its dope as hell tbh), trotz is one of the most respected coaches in the hockey world for a reason (the caps lost something when he walked. they just did. and now the isles are absolute hell to play against and that is largely the coaching of barry trotz, you legit cannot tell me im wrong), and while mike sullivan does have his faults, i think hes found a way to please both management and the crosby-and-malkin unit, which has been really really fucking hard to do. he also led the pens to back to back cups, which you can never really uh. ignore. lmao. so theres those three.

i know less about bednar, but again, another example of the coach and gm working together to make each others’ lives easier. sakic gets bednar the players and staff he needs to make the avs better, and bednar takes those players and staff and makes them into the absolute giant they are. it wouldve been really, really easy to fuck up makar’s development, or bowen byram’s, or sam girard’s, or ryan graves’s, or jost or mackinnon or rantanen’s, but he hasn’t, and he hasn’t just given up on players like burakovsky or kadri, he’s given them new life as players and made them more successful.

joel quenneville is the reason the bl/ckh/wks were a legacy team point blank period. sure they had the talent, sure the gm drafted well, but you do not get the legacy of the chicago bl/ckh/wks without joel quenneville. they fired him on a whim and it absolutely was a mistake, and the moment the cats hired him i literally out loud said ‘oh no’ because i knew exactly what that meant for the leafs and their position in the standings. the panthers are underrated generally, yes, but they would not be the powerhouse they are this season without quenneville. just look at q’s wiki stats. he’s absolutely unbeilevable. he won the jack adams in fucking 2000, before he’d even won any of the cups with the h/wks. i cant tell you what kind of a locker room coach this guy is, but i can tell you his teams win and win convincingly, and that firing him was the biggest mistake the h/wks have made in years.

whenever i talk about coaching, i talk about rod brindamour and sheldon keefe in the same breath every single time because there is no match, and i mean none, for the love inside those locker rooms. the avs, maybe, but my point stands. keefe and brindamour fucking BLEED team spirit, it is at the center of their coaching styles and their teams are good because of it specifically. marner and matthews are good, yes, and they always have been, but they have surpassed all expectation and then some with keefe. aho, teravainen, and svechnikov are good, yes, and they always have been, but they have surpassed all expectation with brindamour. brindamour and keefe have both hashtag played the game, so they Get It, and more than that, theyve grown and changed their understanding of the game as the game itself has changed, and so they can command the authority of their teams while also connecting to them on a really deep level. i should make a note here that keefe and brindamour are incredibly, deeply hockey smart, and that they are also just technically good coaches, skimming their wiki or nhl dot com articles will tell you that, but what makes them stand out to me is that their players would fucking die for them. the leafs would go through the end boards for keefe, the canes would do the same for brindamour. travis dermott said it best when keefe got promoted: boys wanna play for him. beyond that, the management skills both brindamour and keefe have are just frankly amazing (the amount of ego keefe specifically has to manage in the leafs locker room is astounding and he does it so incredibly brilliantly). the leafs and the canes are talented, yes, and would have been talented regardless of who was coaching them. but brindamour and keefe bring both of those teams from talented to exceptional, and the true mark of an amazing coach is not only how many games their team wins, but how they win them, and the leafs and canes have been winning games this year for and because of each other, and that starts with their coaches. what makes a great coach, to me, is not the talent on the team (though that certainly helps), but how the coach manages his players no matter who they are, and how he helps those players grow not just as players as people, because no matter how much pure stats people and twitter hockey dudebros wanna deny it, that shit does affect on ice play, and it does make good players better.

so theres my analysis of the best coaches and gms of the nhl, im so sorry this is so long, oh my god. also, shoutout to @bishops--knifetrick for sending me an ask about this literally a month ago that i just never answered, sorry for that, but here i hope this is good. :)

OVERALL NOTES:

this javert has the most interesting interpretation because up until his FINAL SCENE he is the stone cold police officer, and he plays it SO WELL. like i have never been truly angry at a javert up until this guy, and whether that was because it was modern and resonates A LOT in 2020 or he just looks like a cop i want to punch, I DON’T KNOW but he plays it SO WELL and i love it so much!!

these thenardiers are the fucking BEST NGL they are the perfect mix of funny and cruel. madame t is also funny as HELL and i wish i had her talent lmao

i said it before but the police costumes in this show are. woosh. kudos to the costumer i took one look at those guys and was like “haha, no!.” vaguely related to that, i think this was the first time i nearly cried at Look Down like. the first song at the show, simply because of the convict getting the SHIT beat out of him on the floor. that hurt me and i hate that it is completely accurate to what happens in prisons today.

lovely ladies was,,,a LOT and tbh, i feel like it didn’t need to be. obviously it does show how horrible it is for sex workers, but that is why the music is there. the music and lyrics is there to tell what you don’t show visually. (though i do love the male prostitute lmao he took no shit)

i also said this before but the fact that there wasn’t bigger of a relationship between enjolras and grantaire kind of annoys me simply because they are revolutionaries in the present day. you can’t tell me that ALL OF THEM WERE STRAIGHT. with how many people i know now that identify under the queer and trans umbrella, and also how queer they are (to me) in the brick, the absence of any exr in a modern interpretation hurts a little.

in conclusion, this show was fucking FANTASTIC and even though i’m six years late, it still resonates hard given the time we live in today. i think i nearly screamed when i saw the cops in riot gear on the barricade because that is LITERALLY HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. this just reminds me how timeless the story of les mis is because you had to change LITERALLY NOTHING from the story to make it make sense in the modern age, and that is really the lesson you should learn from les mis; these things happen everywhere, and they need to be fixed.
