I would like to add. Swifties and anyone adjacent who excuse Queen Swiftie's behavior really are the scum of the earth. I was on Tik Tok as one does bestie and the way this one black woman was not defending either but pointing out that Taylor Swift rehashing her beef with Kim K and Kanye is a telltale sign that her entire career is based off being a professional victim and she is no better than the villians on shows like Law and Order SVU because she never healed from whatever happened and the way people continued to bring up what Kanye did amd Kim editing the clip and all I could say was "so why didn't Taylor sue??" If what Kanye did to her with that MV and song was so detrimental to her mental health, WHY DIDN'T SHE SUE!? She sued Olivia Rodrigo FOR a BRIDGE IN a SONG! and a college kid for having a page dedicated to cataloging public accessible information about celebrities! But she didn't sue the big bad Kanye and Kim because she didn't care! Her stans cared more, which made her jump into action. Her stans dont see that Taylor isn't a feminist. In her own words, she said that in like 2015-2016. Taylor is a girl who centers men in her life, she is only as good as who she has linked on her arm, all of her friends are phoney, she forces friendships to seem likeable amongst demographics who dont even look her way. She wants to be relatable, and sis hasnt been relatable since her debut album. The only way she can get any kind of clout is by chasing beef from years prior. I am not a Kim or Kanye fan at all, but the way Taylor is in a twisted sense of irony proving the only reason she has the clout she has is because Kim and Kanye.🤷🏾‍♀️
wait can you send the link of that tiktok? that sounds super interesting. also she sued a college student???? for THAT????
she (the tiktoker) makes a great point because taylor has sued for much less. she definitely is milking the kim/kanye thing because its been 8 years (yes 2016. that was 8 years ago) and 15 years since kanye/2009 mtv awards. she benefits from the framing kanye as “the over aggressive black man” who is mean and hurts the “innocent docile white woman” or taylor swift. that’s why her fanbase is so racist—the most visible celeb conflict she’s had have been heavily racialized aka kanye…twice.
taylor stans are too far gone and also don’t do their research. theyre not really feminists either, they just adopt whatever ideology their queen has atm and use that to defend her.
taylor is uber obsessed with men. which is funny with how much her fans are like “dont define her by her relationships!” when she literally does. like her fans even tried to guess who this album was about. like cmon…
her #GirlSquad freaks me out so bad. its so unnatural 😭 and you’re right she cements her current relevance in past beef its so weird. like why do her fans still harass jake gyllenhaal and calvin harris. soooooooooo weird
and unfortunately whether she likes it or not the mtv 2009 awards was a major turning point for her exposure into the mainstream and it was with fucking kanye 😭

Bella! Queen of wirting fic herself and recommending them! I have a question for you! The rilex slow burn au you recommend was just *chefs kiss* (also quite long, which I love) can you recommend me something else? the love of my life michael clifford has to be in it, but otherwise I don't care, I just am sad and want to read something cute 🥺
oh! hello!! i don’t know if you’re asking for specifically rilex fic recs (slim pickings i’m afraid) or just a fic rec in general ??? but i just went through my bookmarks and this made me realize i haven’t read a good long michael-centric fic in a hot sec, so i’ll have to get on that.
in the meantime, may i direct you to in a world of black and white, by the queen and love of my life @kaleidoscopeminds ?? it is a lashton fic but michael is in it, as requested, and also, i am extremely biased because it was written for me and i love it to death. but! background jalex. AND a jalex spin-off. the things you can achieve when you’re annoyingly persistent and won’t stop bothering your writer friends am i right
also a bunch of old recs of fics i like are in my unofficial fic rec tag, i don’t know if you’ve gone through that yet but it has a lot of good stuff. in my personal opinion

THE FACTS:
part of why mac changed his mind about gay marriage in “fights gay marriage” was because it would have made it much more difficult for dennis to kick him out and cut him off if they had been married (which they had been, functionally, for 20 years already)
dennis has thought about marriage before. “i always thought i’d be married by now” - but to who? why was he thinking about marriage, and who exactly was he marrying in those fantasies? a girl, or...his roommate/best friend of 20 years that he just got out of a nearly-year-long secret relationship with (up until “mac & dennis break up” a few episodes prior)?
gay marriage wasn’t legal in philly in 2010. neither were civil unions or domestic partnerships. in fact, the only way to have a same-sex marriage was if one of you was a government employee.
gay marriage got legalized in 2014...no episodes aired in 2014.
THE THEORIES:
dennis has suggested a marriage scheme before season 6. that wasn’t the first time they’ve fought about dennis’s gym membership, and cell phone plan, and who’s on the lease. dennis has suggested they get married for the benefits (which is why charlie thought of that in the first place), and mac said no. that’s way too Gay For Real and anyway, it’s not legal. even if they went out of state for a license, it wouldn’t be recognized there.
dennis proposed....sort of. it wasn’t a big, romantic proposal; there weren’t any rings, or a nice romantic speech. casually, over candles and steak and wine at monthly dinner, dennis brought up the idea... and mac rejected him.
mac wished he’d said yes. they literally just broke up (in s5) and his immediate reaction is to think that maybe they should have gotten married after all (even if philly wouldn’t recognize it) to be clear that even though he didn’t want to sleep together and be a couple anymore, he didn’t want to lose him completely, either
after they burned their apartment down at the end of season 9 (nov 2013), they revisited the “marriage of convenience” idea. they thought that being married might help them close easier on a new lease. dennis ended up proposing again, this time in the park. it wasn’t any more romantic than it had been the last time - no rings, no big speech. just him sitting on the fountain and mac standing next to him, with dennis looking pretty in the slight breeze and late afternoon sun, suggesting a scheme. mac said yes.
they got the lease, and a temporary apartment to go with it. of course, since the entire scam hinged on using being married as a selling point (à la frank and charlie trying to get a discount on a lap dance), they could only search for apartments with one bedroom...and one bed.
(@glirsty said this to hurt me, but) they were really very good at keeping up the facade. holding hands, pet names, kissing goodbye and going out to dinner. sleeping in the same bed, waking up in the morning tangled up together. and one day mac wakes up feeling so warm and soft, with dennis the first thing he sees, that he kisses him before he can think it through. and dennis is kissing him back and then theyre making out on the pillows before they can even register what’s happened, and mac pulls away first, thinking like, “fuck, we’re just fake married, what are we doing” but dennis looks so pretty, hair a mess and his lips just-kissed-pink, and mac is still pretty sleepy so he decides to just go for it. & they sleep together for the first time in...years.
except one day dennis kisses him in public - like, public public - and mac goes off about sinning, the usual rampage. he ended up feeling like the whole scheme had gotten way out of hand and he called it off. he drunk-dialed the lawyer, again, and the next day dennis got served divorce papers.
(dennis never signed a prenup, again. probably he thought he wouldn’t need to, not with mac. that’s why, despite “hating mac” he never fucking moves out of his back pocket. a) he still loves him and b) way too much paper work and he’ll lose half his stuff.)
they move into dee’s living room right before new years’. beats boggs happened in mid-january
by early s10 (2015), dennis had already canonically not been sleeping around with women that much. there was no real reason to fuck mandy since he wasn’t on the plane anymore, so doing so wouldn’t “win” the bet against frank. except - mac just divorced him, and then dennis thought mac was saying “don’t go” to him but he wasn’t really asking him to stay. he never did. dennis got mad and did it as revenge and to let off some steam with how upset he was (boy, did that backfire on them both).
mac knows it. “because of you i changed who i am at my core” - two months to the day since they signed divorce papers. looking dennis in the eye, saying “i want you to meet the love of my life.” not really teasing him, just saying: “i’m straight. that was a scheme. that didn’t mean anything.” and it hurts dennis just like intended (even though he got caught out for not actually sleeping with dusty right after)
THE CONCLUSION:
dennis proposed in 2009 and 2014, and mac turned him down and then divorced him, respectively... and that’s where a lot of their baggage from s10 onward comes from. mac’s out now but dennis is still scared of something like this, or just the general idea of mac wanting him in bed but not for real, happening again.

My first post. Kind of put this off for so long cos i was scared i would get judged or blocked or attacked if i stated my opinion. But since i dont really have followers, I figured, might as well do it. Also I believe im respectful enough not to attract heat and be blocked by people I follow so yeahp.
First, in case someone else does chance upon this post, I’d like to make it clear that I believe Louis and Harry were together at one point. Dont know if it’s official or serious or they were just fooling around and acting on their curiousity but there is NO way that was all platonic. Do I believe theyre together still? I cant say for certain. Im the type of fan who takes in things as they come. Some days im so convinced they are still together but stunts makes me doubt it. Which I think is why exactly the stunts are there for anyway so 🤷🏻‍♀️ though to be honest, im leaning towards, yes. I do think they broke up for a brief period in 2015, but even that, im still open to be desuaded.
Second, I have no definite opinion on babygate. Again i take things as they come but I feel like Freddie can be Louis’ and still be with Harry now. Kind of fits the timeline im sort of buying into. But theres also so much that doesnt add up with regard to Briana and Freddie that i would not be surprised if larries were right all along.
That said, I just want to put down into words what I think about Fine Line and the story it tells. This is my blog anyway and I feel like im entitled to write down what I think it might be about.
I think Fine Line tells a story of Harry from the time he joined XFactor and met Louis. The songs, I believe are arranged chronologically and again fits the timeline im leaning towards believing.
GOLDEN
Harry meets Louis. Hes too bright for him. Baby Larry was something else really. Its so fascinating to watch them and kind of heartbreaking when you compare to how they are now in public. Louis was so full of life, so energetic that Harry was more often than not, left in awe.
Despite how Louis was, though, I believe Harry was the braver one and was the one who was more accpeting of his sexuality and feelings. If the rumors are anything to go by, Harry always knew he wasnt straight as opposed to Louis who, until Harry, appears to have been with girls exclusively. His “fear” or feelings of being scared must have come from this or from just maybe, letting other people in, generally.
Watermelon Sugar/Adore You
The Honeymoon stage of the relationship. Watermelon sugar so obviously refers to intimacy (okay fine, SEX) and just being obsessed with the other person. Spending as much time as you want. Makes sense that this was written about the early part of their relationship.
Same with Adore You. Thematically, both songs are about the happy times and promises of adoration, love and commitment.
Lights Up
I’ve always interpretted Lights Up to be about self discovery on the one hand but also a narration of how Harry must have felt while he was in the band. Lights literally meant stage lights which have exposed and caged him at the same time.
The line “lights up and they know who you are”, i believe refers to the public and how they think They know Harry simply because they get to watch him on stage or on television. But despite all of it, the fame etc. couldnt stop the darkness or emptiness Harry feels. No matter what they say, being in a boyband must have put tremendous pressure on all of them. And if Harry is indeed not straight then absolutely not having freedom to express himself or be himself (eve just a little bit) must have been very difficult.
Thus the line “be so sweet if things just stayed the same” must refer to staying in the band. But he can no longer do it and must “step into the light” to more freedom or freedom to express more. And that he’s never going back to a set up where he was so constricted or so controlled as when he was in 1D.
Now here goes my unpopular opinion, but I believe Harry was the cause of the hiatus and must have demanded to get out of the band. Ergo, straining his relationship with Louis. Which could (or could have not) led to a break of some sort or some very difficult trying times in their relationship.
Thus, the breakup/heartbreaking/sad songs.
CHERRY/ FALLING
Now im well aware of the narrative behind Cherry. And it could be true but it could also have been dressed up a bit to fit said narrative. Cherry, could also be about Louis and the time they may have been apart.
I read somewhere, an Anon believes Cherry to be about Camille but that the rest of the album about Louis after Harry realized it was still him. Still makes sense if we believe that H and L have broken up a bit in 2015.
But it could also be a purely stunt song. Cherry seems to be out of place because in it, it is suggested that Harry’s love interest is already gone/broke up with him and “moved on”. Yet Falling which comes after Cherry, and Falling appears to be about couple who just broke up or on the brink of it.
Falling also is about heartbreak and could again be about the time H and L were apart.
To Be So Lonely
...appears to be a transition song of some sort. Could be about reconciliation as Harry slowly admits to being in the wrong and fixing things slowly.
She
i subscribe to the interpretation that its about H’s identity. Still chronological as self discovery is an ever on going process and never really stops. Somewhere between leaving the band and now during HOLO it makes sense that H is still discovering things abt himself.
Sunflower Vol 6/ Canyon Moon
Now this i believe are songs abt Louis. Its happy cos they (depends if you subscribe to the timeline) were able to fix it, they made it. And are in a better place now. Too many lines seemto have been lifted from fandom beliefs and headcanons for it not to be related to L at all.
Treat People With Kindness
simple straight forward song about how Harry must have felt during tour.
Fine Line
Believe this song is for the present. Like a promise and vow that they will be alright despite everything still surrounding them and put upon them.
The song calls to me as very loaded, somber but hopeful. Resigned but full of promises. The instruments/instrumental gives you that nostalgic feeling like “i know who I am now. Ive accepted me. And we’ll be alright”
As said even prior to HS2, i have a general belief/leaning towards the fact that H and L may have broken up for a time. Couldnt really say how long or how short, or if it was an actual break up or merely a rough patch, no one can anyway. But if my interpretation and opinion are a tiny bit accurate then that makes sense right?
Whatever it is, the way H writes abt L matches Louis’ songs too. Too Young, Habit and Defenceless appears to be abt a difficult time in a relationship or even a break up of some sort. But really, when Louis sang these songs in CCME I didnt feel sad or felt like they have indeed broken up. To me, it felt like a declaration that “hey we havent had it easy but even during the times were not together, its you. Youre it”. Theres too much love there not to think or interpret it that way. A person who has been left behind or have left someone wont write abt heartbreak and at the same time declare “YOURE THE ONE”.
Id like to end this first post, by saying that we cant really know the real score between H and L. And at the end of the day we are all speculating. But regardless of their status now, you cant deny how inspiring their love is (or was, depends what your beliefs are).
Hope i can now post more things as they come. I promise, really, not to be a problematic fan.
Please dont fight me??!

The way U.S. teens spend their time is changing, but differences between boys and girls persist
The way U.S. teens spend their time is changing, but differences between boys and girls persist;
Teens spend an average of 16 minutes more per day doing homework than they did around 2005. Above, a student works on homework while her sister hangs out. (Katherine Frey/The Washington Post via Getty Images)
Teens today are spending their time differently than they did a decade ago. They’re devoting more time to sleep and homework, and less time to paid work and socializing. But what has not changed are the differences between teen boys and girls in time spent on leisure, grooming, homework, housework and errands, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
Overall, teens (ages 15 to 17) spend an hour a day, on average, doing homework during the school year, up from 44 minutes a day about a decade ago and 30 minutes in the mid-1990s.
Teens are also getting more shut-eye than they did in the past. They are clocking an average of over nine and a half hours of sleep a night, an increase of 22 minutes compared with teens a decade ago and almost an hour more than those in the mid-1990s. Sleep patterns fluctuate quite a bit – on weekends, teens average about 11 hours, while on weekdays they typically get just over nine hours a night. (While these findings are derived from time diaries in which respondents record the amount of time they slept on the prior night, results from other types of surveys suggest teens are getting fewer hours of sleep.)
Teens now enjoy more than five and a half hours of leisure a day (5 hours, 44 minutes). The biggest chunk of teens’ daily leisure time is spent on screens: 3 hours and 4 minutes on average. This figure, which can include time spent gaming, surfing the web, watching videos and watching TV, has held steady over the past decade. On weekends, screen time increases to almost four hours a day (3 hours, 53 minutes), and on weekdays teens are spending 2 hours and 44 minutes on screens.
Time spent playing sports has held steady at around 45 minutes, as has the time teens spend in other types of leisure such as shopping for clothes, listening to music and reading for pleasure.
Time spent by teens in other leisure activities has declined. Over the past decade, the time spent socializing – including attending parties, extracurriculars, sporting or other entertainment events as well as spending time with others in person or on the phone – has dropped by 16 minutes, to 1 hour and 13 minutes a day.
Teens also are spending less time on paid work during the school year than their predecessors: 26 minutes a day, on average, compared with 49 minutes about a decade ago and 57 minutes in the mid-1990s. Much of this decline reflects the fact that teens are less likely to work today than in the past; among employed teens, the amount of time spent working is not much different now than it was around 2005.
While the way teens overall spend their time has changed in a number of ways, persistent gender differences in time use remain. Teen boys are spending an average of about six hours a day in leisure time, compared with roughly five hours a day for girls – driven largely by the fact that boys are spending about an hour (58 minutes) more a day than girls engaged in screen time. Boys also spend more time playing sports: 59 minutes vs. 33 minutes for girls.
On the flip side, girls spend 10 more minutes a day, on average, shopping for items such as clothes or going to the mall (15 minutes vs. 5 minutes).
Teen girls also spend more time than boys on grooming activities, such as bathing, getting dressed, getting haircuts, and other activities related to their hygiene and appearance. Girls spend an average of about an hour a day on these types of tasks (1 hour, 3 minutes); boys spend 40 minutes on them.
Girls also devote 21 more minutes a day to homework than boys do – 71 minutes vs. 50 minutes, on average, during the school year. This pattern has held steady over the past decade, as the amount of time spent on homework has risen equally for boys and girls.
When it comes to the amount of time spent on housework, the differences between boys and girls reflect gender dynamics that are also evident among adults. Teenage girls spend 38 minutes a day, on average, helping around the house during the school year, compared with 24 minutes a day for boys. The bulk of this gap is driven by the fact that girls spend more than twice as much time cleaning up and preparing food as boys do (29 minutes vs. 12 minutes). There are not significant differences in the amount of time boys and girls spend on home maintenance and lawn care.
Girls also spend more time running errands, such as shopping for groceries (21 minutes vs. 11 minutes for boys).
In addition to these differences in how they spend their time, the way boys and girls feel about their day also differs in some key ways. A new survey by Pew Research Center of teens ages 13 to 17 finds that 36% of girls say they feel tense or nervous about their day every or almost every day; 23% of boys say the same. At the same time, girls are more likely than boys to say they get excited daily or almost daily by something they study in school (33% vs. 21%). And while similar shares of boys and girls say they feel a lot of pressure to get good grades, be involved in extracurricular activities or fit in socially, girls are more likely than boys to say they face a lot of pressure to look good (35% vs. 23%).
About the data
This analysis is based primarily on time diary data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS), which has been sponsored by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and annually conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau since 2003. The ATUS produces a nationally representative sample of respondents, drawn from the Current Population Survey.
Most of the analyses are based on respondents in the 2003-2006 and the 2014-2017 ATUS samples (referred to in the text as “2005” and “2015”). Data regarding time use in the mid-1990s is based on 1992-1994 data from the American Heritage Time Use Survey (AHTUS). For all time points, multiple years of data were combined in order to increase sample size. Because time use among teens can vary so much between the summer and the school year, only data for September through June are used for these analyses. Although focused on the school year, the data also reflect time use during school holidays, such as spring break.
These time diaries track in detail how Americans spend their time, focusing on each respondent’s primary activity (i.e., the main thing they were doing) sequentially for the prior day, including the start and end times for each activity.
All data were accessed via the ATUS-X website made available through IPUMS.

AP FACT CHECK: Trump claims innocence in probe; wall myths
WASHINGTON — Feeling the pressure of investigations and a partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump is playing loose with the facts regarding hush payments made by his former attorney Michael Cohen to two women and is changing his story on his promise to build a concrete border wall paid for by Mexico.
In comments over the weekend, Trump said he did not commit any campaign violation and suggests anything improper would be minor compared with infractions of Democrats such as former President Barack Obama. The reality is not so cut and dried. Federal prosecutors in New York have implicated Trump in a crime, linking him to the hush-money scheme. The Obama campaign’s infractions were civil, not criminal.
On the border wall, Trump insists he never promised a concrete barrier — even though he did — and asserts that much of it has been built. It hasn’t.
The dubious statements capped an expansive week of assertions by the president. On top of the usual Twitter flow, Trump opened a Cabinet meeting with 90 minutes of opining to the press, touching on immigration, drug prices, the Soviet history in Afghanistan, his approval ratings, Syria, oil prices, the attractiveness of his generals (“better looking than Tom Cruise”), and much more. A few days later he spoke for an hour at a Rose Garden news conference.
A sampling of his claims:
TRUMP INVESTIGATIONS
TRUMP: “Many people currently a part of my opposition, including President Obama & the Dems, have had campaign violations, in some cases for very large sums of money. These are civil cases. They paid a fine & settled. While no big deal, I did not commit a campaign violation!” — tweet Saturday.
THE FACTS: Trump has been tied to — but not charged with — a crime. At issue is not a routine campaign violation.
Prosecutors’ court filings last month said Trump directed Cohen to make payments to buy the silence of porn actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal during the 2016 presidential campaign. Both women alleged they had extramarital affairs with Trump, which the White House denies.
Cohen, who pleaded guilty in August to campaign finance crimes in connection with those payments, had previously implicated Trump. Now the Justice Department is backing up Cohen’s claims.
In particular, the Justice Department says the hush money payments were unreported campaign contributions meant to influence the outcome of the election. That assertion makes the payments subject to campaign finance laws, which restrict how much people can donate to a campaign and bar corporations from making direct contributions.
It’s unclear whether Trump will actually be charged with illegal activity, because Justice Department legal memos from 1973 and 2000 have suggested that a sitting president is immune from indictment. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told NBC this past week that Trump isn’t necessarily immune, calling an indictment of a sitting president “an open discussion in terms of the law.”
There’s a big difference between Obama’s campaign violation and Cohen’s case.
A Federal Election Commission audit found that the 2008 Obama campaign failed to file 48-hour contribution reports in a timely manner for more than 1,200 donations totalling $1.9 million. The commission also found the campaign was late refunding some contributions that exceeded legal limits, and discovered some other reporting errors regarding contribution dates.
The commission fined the Obama campaign $375,000 for the violations. The campaign was not found to have wilfully violated the law, making it a civil infraction.
In Cohen’s case, he admitted he knew he was breaking the law by making the payments. Cohen told ABC last month that “of course” Trump knew it was wrong to make the hush-money payments, though he did not provide any specific evidence in the interview. Unlike the Obama case, where the issue was timely reporting, the hush money payments were never disclosed at all on Trump’s campaign filings.
Andrew Herman, a lawyer specializing in campaign finance at law firm Miller & Chevalier, said the two cases are “completely different species.”
“One is a paperwork error,” he said. “And the other is a conscious attempt to obscure payments made to affect an election.”
——
THE WALL
TRUMP: “As far as concrete, I said I was going to build a wall. I never said, ‘I’m going to build a concrete.’ I said I’m going to build a wall.” — Rose Garden news conference Friday.
THE FACTS: Actually, he did say he would build a concrete wall. Trump even repeated that promise last week, rejecting the claim of his departing White House chief of staff John Kelly that Trump had abandoned the notion of “a solid concrete wall early on in the administration.”
“An all concrete Wall was NEVER ABANDONED,” Trump tweeted on Dec. 31. “Some areas will be all concrete but the experts at Border Patrol prefer a Wall that is see through.”
During the 2016 campaign, Trump pledged to build a “big, beautiful wall” made of concrete, rebar and steel across the length of the southern border with Mexico. Back then, he lashed out at the suggestion that what he was proposing had anything in common with mere fencing.
“Jeb Bush just talked about my border proposal to build a ‘fence,’ he tweeted in 2015. “It’s not a fence, Jeb, it’s a WALL, and there’s a BIG difference!”
He now often refers to the wall as “steel slats.”
“Steel is stronger than concrete,” he said Friday. “If I build a steel wall rather than a concrete wall, it will actually be stronger than a concrete” wall.
——
TRUMP: “When they say ‘build the wall,’ I don’t say that any more. I say ‘finish the wall.”‘ — remarks to reporters Sunday.
TRUMP: “We’ve already built a lot of the wall.” — Rose Garden news conference Friday.
THE FACTS: He hasn’t built much of the wall at all.
Trump’s claim is only supported when counting work done under past presidents and ignoring the fact that fences from prior administrations are not the towering walls he promised. The 2006 Secure Fence Act has resulted in about 650 miles (1,050 kilometres) of border barrier. Money approved by Congress in March 2018 is to pay for 84 miles (135 km), but that work is not done. Trump has achieved some renovation of existing barrier.
——
TRUMP: “The drugs are pouring into this country. They don’t go through the ports of entry. When they do, they sometimes get caught.” — Rose Garden news conference.
THE FACTS: He’s wrong in saying drug smugglers don’t or only rarely use official border crossings for their trafficking. Land ports of entry are their primary means for getting drugs into the country, not stretches of the border without barriers, says the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
The agency said in a November report that the most common trafficking technique by transnational criminal organizations is to hide drugs in passenger vehicles or tractor-trailers as they drive into the U.S. though entry ports, where they are stopped and subject to inspection. They also employ buses, cargo trains and tunnels, the report says, citing smuggling methods that would not be choked off by a border wall.
——
TRUMP: “The new trade deal we have with Mexico and Canada — what we save on that, just with Mexico, will pay for the wall many times over, just in a period of a year, two years or three years. So I view that as absolutely Mexico is paying for the wall.” — Rose Garden news conference.
THE FACTS: Mexico is not paying for the wall and nothing in the trade agreement would cover or refund the construction cost.
Trump is assuming a wide variety of economic benefits will come from the agreement, but they can’t be quantified or counted on. For example, he said the deal will dissuade some U.S. companies from moving operations to Mexico and he credits that possibility as a payment by Mexico for his wall.
The deal updates the North American Free Trade Agreement, in the main preserving NAFTA’s liberalized environment of low or no tariffs among the U.S., Mexico and Canada, while making certain improvements for each country. Trump stated inaccurately that it’s “brand new. It’s totally different.”
Moreover, it’s not in effect. The deal has yet to be ratified in any member country and its chances of winning legislative approval are not assured.
Trump has argued repeatedly that Mexico is footing the bill even while insisting on $5.6 billion from the U.S. treasury to go toward wall construction. His demand and the refusal of Democrats to satisfy it are behind the budget standoff that has closed parts of the government.
——
SYRIA
TRUMP: “We are pulling back in Syria. We’re going to be removing our troops. I never said we’re doing it that quickly.” — remarks to reporters Sunday.
TRUMP: “We’re bringing the troops back home over a period of time. I never said so quickly, but over a period of time.” — Cabinet meeting Wednesday.
THE FACTS: He’s wrong about his past statements regarding the pace of withdrawal. In a video posted to his Twitter account on Dec. 19, for instance, Trump said of the roughly 2,000 troops in Syria: “They’re all coming back, and they’re coming back now.”
——
TRUMP: “I read, when we pull out, ‘Oh, Russia is thrilled.’ Russia is not happy. You know why they’re not happy? Because they like it when we’re killing ISIS, because we’re killing them for them, and we’re killing them for Assad, and we’re killing ISIS also for Iran.” — Cabinet meeting.
THE FACTS: Russia says it’s happy. A U.S. withdrawal opens opportunities for Moscow and Tehran to increase their influence and may help the Syrian government survive as a Kurdish-led opposition force loses its military ally on the ground.
Russian President Vladimir Putin says the U.S. “has done the right thing” in planning to pull out.
——
AFGHANISTAN
TRUMP: “The reason Russia was in Afghanistan was because terrorists were going into Russia. They (the Soviets) were right to be there.” — Cabinet meeting.
THE FACTS: His assertion that the Soviet Union was experiencing a terrorist influx from Afghanistan when it invaded in 1979 is out of step with history. And his belief that the Soviets were right to invade is a stark departure from U.S. and world opinion.
The Soviets were trying to bolster communists in Afghanistan and possibly expand their influence against the United States and the West.
World condemnation was swift: The U.N. General Assembly voted 104-18 to deplore the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. The U.S. supported the anti-communist rebels, giving them shoulder-fired rockets to down Soviet aircraft. The Soviets withdrew in 1989.
——
TRUMP: “Russia used to be the Soviet Union. Afghanistan made it Russia, because they went bankrupt fighting in Afghanistan.” — Cabinet meeting.
THE FACTS: Afghanistan was far from the sole reason for the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. The dissolution occurred in a time of ethnic and political troubles, economic woes and a series of revolutions that led Soviet republics to seek their independence. The Soviet demise was accelerated by the heavy cost of competing with the West to wield influence around the world, including in Afghanistan.
——
OIL PRICES
TRUMP: “Do you think it’s just luck that gas prices are so low, and falling? Low gas prices are like another Tax Cut!” — tweet Tuesday.
TRUMP: “It’s not luck. It’s not luck. I called up certain people, and I said, ‘Let that damn oil and gasoline — you let it flow — the oil.’ It was going up to $125. If that would’ve happened, then you would’ve had a recession, depression.” — Cabinet meeting Wednesday.
THE FACTS: It’s not all about him, or even mostly about him.
While Americans may end up paying somewhat less for gasoline this year, Trump’s suggestion that he deserves all the credit and averted a U.S. economic depression is an exaggeration. Oil prices, which peaked Oct. 3, have been generally falling on the realization that U.S. sanctions against Iran would not create a shortage and on fear that a global oversupply of oil will spill into 2019 if slower international economic growth depresses energy demand.
The president’s supposed “let it flow” edict did not stop OPEC and its Russia-led allies from agreeing last month to cut oil production. That initially failed to stop oil prices from sliding further; they have since rebounded a few dollars in the past week. Continued OPEC production cuts would push prices higher.
Trump has pointed to his positive relations with Saudi Arabia, which remains the biggest oil exporter. As a so-called swing producer with the ability to adjust production up or down relatively quickly, it can indeed influence the price of crude. But the market is complex: Canada, for example, is actually the top source of U.S. oil imports, with Saudi Arabia second.
——
TARIFFS
TRUMP: “The United States Treasury has taken in MANY billions of dollars from the Tariffs we are charging China and other countries that have not treated us fairly. In the meantime we are doing well in various Trade Negotiations currently going on.” — tweet Thursday.
THE FACTS: Trump is off on two major issues. First, tariffs are taxes paid largely by U.S. business and consumers, not foreign countries. And while Trump’s “MANY billions” might sound like a lot, it’s doing little to nothing to improve the federal balance sheet. The U.S. government spent $4.1 trillion last fiscal year and the budget deficit shot up, according to Trump’s own Treasury Department.
Customs and duties generated $41.3 billion in revenues last year, up from $34.6 billion in 2017.
That $6.7 billion increase occurred in part because of the president’s tariffs. But it amounted to just 0.16 per cent of federal spending.
——
MATTIS
TRUMP, on Jim Mattis: “I wish him well. I hope he does well. But, as you know, President (Barack) Obama fired him and essentially so did I. I want results.” — Cabinet meeting Wednesday.
THE FACTS: Actually, Mattis resigned as defence secretary in protest over Trump’s decision to pull U.S. troops from Syria.
The retired Marine general announced on Dec. 20 in a resignation letter that he was stepping down after Trump’s decision to withdraw 2,000 U.S. troops from Syria. Mattis said he would stay on the job until the end of February. Three days later, Trump said he was replacing Mattis with the second-ranking defence official, Pat Shanahan, on Jan. 1.
As to the tenure under Obama, Mattis served as commander of the military’s Central Command. He departed a few months earlier than expected in 2013, in part because of disagreements over Iran.
——
DRUG PRICES
TRUMP: “I think you’re going to see a tremendous reduction in drug prices.” — Cabinet meeting Wednesday.
THE FACTS: Prices continue to rise. Administration policies announced last year and currently being completed don’t seem to have shifted that trend.
Figures on U.S. prescription drug price changes compiled by health data company Elsevier show that from Dec. 20 through Jan. 2, there were 1,179 product price changes. Of those, 30 were price cuts and the remaining 1,149 were price increases, with 328 of them between 9 per cent and 10 per cent. All but one of the rest were by lower percentages. Elsevier spokesman Chris Capot said more companies will be announcing price increases this month.
Separately, a data firm whose software can help patients find the most cost-effective medications says its information shows price increases on many commonly used drugs for conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
“In the first two days of January, prices have increased on more than 250 different products,” said Michael Rea, CEO of Rx Savings Solutions. The average increase is about 6 per cent, he added.
——
IMMIGRATION
TRUMP, on the number of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally: “I used to hear 11 million all the time. It would always stay right at 11. I said, ‘Does it ever increase or go down?’ ‘No, it’s 11.’ Nobody knows. It’s probably 30, 35 million people. They would flow in, mostly from the southern border, they’d come in and nobody would talk about it, nobody would do anything about it.” — Cabinet meeting Wednesday.
THE FACTS: It’s nowhere close to 30 million to 35 million, according to his own Homeland Security secretary as well as independent estimates.
The nonpartisan Pew Research Center estimates there were 10.7 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally in 2016, the most recent data available. Advocacy groups on both sides of the immigration issue have similar estimates.
At a House hearing last month, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen acknowledged the number was “somewhere” between 11 million and 22 million, significantly lower than Trump’s claim of 35 million.
According to Pew, the number of immigrants in the U.S. illegally had reached a height of 12.2 million in 2007, representing about 4 per cent of the U.S. population, before declining in part because of a weakening U.S. economy.
——
TRUMP: “The coyotes are using children to gain access into this country. They’re using these children. They’re not with families. They’re using the children. They’re taking the children. And then they dispose of the children after they’re done. This has been going on for years. This isn’t unique to us. But we want to stop it.” — Cabinet meeting Wednesday.
THE FACTS: This does happen, though it’s not as common as Trump suggests by talking about it so often.
He is referring to adults who come with children they falsely claim to be theirs, so that they won’t be detained under a no-child-separation policy.
But such cases of fraud are rare. According to the Homeland Security Department, about 500 immigrants were found to be not a “legitimate family unit” and thus separated upon detention from April 19 to Sept. 30 of last year. That’s a small fraction of the 107,000 families apprehended in the last budget year, which ended Sept. 30.

Khabib Nurmagomedov: UFC’s first Muslim star on the verge of greatness
The 28-year-old Dagestani brawler boasts a 24-0 record but he faces the stiffest test of his MMA on Saturday with the interim lightweight title on the line
Since its founding in 1993, a diverse mix of men and women have laid claim to belts as the best of the best in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Saturday night in the co-main event of UFC 209 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, 28-year-old Dagestani mixed martial artist Khabib Nurmagomedov seeks to become the first Muslim to join the list.
Boasting a 24-0 record built over the course of a nine-year career, The Eagle, as he likes to be called, brings a particularly hard and damaging grappling style into the Octagon that was hammered into him since he could walk the rugged terrain on which generations of North Caucasian men have been instructed to battle.
These are the people and places Nurmagomedov conjures as he prepares to fight.
I feel I represent my country. Not only my country, but all former USSR countries, because I have very big fanbase here and I have more than a billion Muslim fans, Nurmagomedov told the Guardian. I feel I represent these guys all around the world. My fans. This gives me very good energy. When I go to the cage I think about these people.
More and more, they think about him.
Few fighters in the MMA have cultivated a relationship with fans the way Nurmagomedov has. The unbeaten contender boasts 1.9 million followers on Instagram, and has drawn large crowds of Russian and Muslim supporters. The UFC has attempted to make in-roads to promoting events in Russia, and Nurmagomedov is a major reason why.
Upon his return to Makhachkala, Dagestan, after dominating Michael Johnson in November, hundreds of fans greeted him at the airport. If he manages to become the 71st fighter in UFC history to win a belt, the reception is likely to bloom well beyond that. Wherever he goes, whatever he does, Nurmagomedov, who speaks English with an entertaining flair, has shown an ability to connect with people, whether or not they identify with him on cultural, ethnic or religious grounds.
Drawing upon his heritage and faith, the UFCs first Muslim star is on the verge of realizing the greatness that was set out for him in his earliest days. Like his father, Abdulmanap, Khabib began wrestling, as most Dagestani boys do, near the age of eight. Abdulmanap excelled at judo and combat sambo, a form of martial art linked to the Russian military, and went on to counsel many Dagestani children in the ways of self-defense and fitness as much a rite of passage as a simple competitive exercise. At the top of the class, of course, was Khabib. From the outset of his training Khabib displayed natural gifts, and his father sought to push these traits to their limit.
Famously, a video surfaced in 2015 that showed Kabib, nine at the time, successfully wrestling a bear cub to the delight of Abdulmanap, an esteemed wrestling coach under the old USSR sports program. The son never stopped going after the cub, such was his desire to please his father. That sensibility has only grown stronger over the years, leading him to the stiffest test of his professional MMA career this weekend against American dynamo Tony El Cucuy Ferguson (22-3).
I think when I win this fight that my skill will be better than his skill, Nurmagomedov said of Ferguson, a wild and rangy challenger who could easily present problems. He is unpredictable. He has good knees, good elbows. I think my game is much better than his game. Most important, I have my heart which is more big than his head. I think thats why Im going to win this fight.
Five years ago, Nurmagomedov sought to perfect his skills away from Dagestan, where proper sparring partners became sparse while distractions mounted as his profile expanded, so he joined trainer Javier Mendez and the assortment of top-tier fighters and wrestlers toiling daily at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California. Nurmagomedov said he took to San Jose, and remains comfortable being a devout Muslim in the US, at a moment in time when others in his position might not feel the same.
I know America is very nice and very good people, he said. Im a professional athlete. I come here. I never have a problem with somebody about my religion, about my name. I am happy.
Im always comfortable because I never do anything wrong. All the time I do something right. I follow all the rules. Why do I have to feel uncomfortable?
Following Nurmagomedovs debut in the US with the UFC in 2012, its been his opponents who have felt uneasy after being driven to the canvas and mauled. Along the way any difficulties he suffered had more to with injuries, including a series of setbacks with his knees, than politics or what his foes could do. He briefly flirted with walking away from fighting after breaking a rib in 2015. That incident delayed a matchup with the man he fights Saturday, another bout in which Nurmagomedov will be expected to rely on his grappling because this is where he is significantly better than anyone he has fought.
I dont think Ive had anyone thats as good as him at doing that, said Mendez, who has trained the likes of UFC champions Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez. Mendez has served as Khabibs chief second in place of his father since 2012. Hes just an incredibly tenacious grappler who just wont quit. Hes a badger in a way, in that you aint stopping him.
Two months prior to fights in the octagon, Nurmagomedov makes the trip to California to focus on his preparation.
I train, eat, sleep and repeat.
Yet fans continue to find him to express their admiration. Among American Muslims, few athletes these days have drawn their attention as much as Nurmagomedov. Prior to traveling to Las Vegas for the Ferguson fight, cameras following the fighter for UFCs online documentary series Embedded caught a group of supporters making a surprise visit to AKA to wish him will. He promised them he would become the UFCs first Muslim champion and they cheered intensely. As the face of a growing crop of Muslims competing and excelling in mixed martial arts, Nurmagomedov has come to represent more than a dominant competitor to the many people who love watching him fight.
I feel theyre waiting for my victory, he said. I feel a lot of people are waiting for this belt. They want me to win this belt and Im going to do this for sure.

If I hadnt met Michelle Obama, I might not be where I am today
The first ladys campaigning on education took her all over the world. Here, some of those she met over the years recall her golden touch
Isha Sesay
A presenter and correspondent for CNN International. She travelled with Michelle Obama in Liberia and Morocco last year for the making of the CNN documentary We Will Rise: Michelle Obamas Mission to Educate Girls Around the World
It will be a strange and sad moment for me, a woman of colour, when Michelle Obama leaves the White House. To lose the imagery of a black first family and all that Michelle Obama has bought to the table, all she has actively and routinely worked for. Ive been in the States now for 11 years now but every time they stepped out as the first family it got me. It never lost its potency. She is such an active and participatory first lady. No one knows what kind of first lady Melania Trump will be. No one is saying she wont carve her own path, but Michelle Obama was very special.
I first met her in 2014 when I was invited to the White House to attend a formal dinner for a US/Africa summit. All the heads of state from Africa came to DC along with their first ladies and I was asked to moderate a panel for Mrs Obama and Mrs Bush at the Kennedy Centre. Later an invite came to the formal dinner, which was thrilling. At the White House you wait in line to be introduced and when I got to Mrs Obama she said I almost wore that same dress tonight! And I say No! and she says Yes! and she gave me the biggest hug. She was just amazing, very tall, very warm, she just scooped me up into this big hug the very first time I met her.
The Obamas celebrate people of colour, they want to include them. Both she and the president are skilled at knowing what they can achieve by aligning themselves with other successful people of colour, how it amplifies the message of what is possible. I think they almost do it as a public service. They understand that every time they have Beyonc with them, or John Legend or Jay Z, the message goes further and it opens the minds of kids in the inner cities to the possibilities and I think thats smart.
CNN discussed various projects with the White House and then settled on the first lady going to Africa, for her last overseas trip. [In the documentary Michelle Obama, along with Sesay and actors Freida Pinto and Meryl Streep, meets and speaks with young north African women who describe their struggles to get an education.] I got an email asking how I would feel about travelling to Africa with the first lady and practically had to pick myself up off the floor.
When we were in Liberia I kept watching how she was trying to connect with the girls who spoke, really watching them and willing them on as they struggled in some cases. It was very moving because she really wanted them to feel safe and able to share. Before we arrived I asked the White House about the protocol for the girls who would meet her. How should they address her? Could they touch her? I was able to tell them that from the White House point of view, once youre in the bubble so to speak [through security], once you are in the room with her, youre good. So the girls could touch her, refer to her freely, there were no restrictions placed on interactions with her at all.
We went to hear her talk at the Peace Corps [the US governments volunteer programme] in Monrovia and she just walked into that space and practically blew the roof off with her energy levels. I will say, and Im 41, that whenever Im with her and I listen to her speak you walk out and you are charged by being in her presence, by hearing her words of motivation. Its not just the words she utters, its her conviction and its her life story that backs them up. In Morocco I saw how willing she was to share her own insecurities, her own challenges with the girls. She said to them: Were all girls here together. Were all going to share. How many first ladies in the world can you imagine just busting in and saying: This is girl-talk time? And it resonates authentically. I think maybe thats the difference. Other people say it but she means it.
I last saw her for a special screening of the film at the White House. She was really mischievous. I told her that in Morocco I had been in the souk late at night and as I was wandering around a guy asked me: Are you an Obama? and I looked left and I looked right and I said: Yes, I am! and she roared with laughter. And then she walked into the east room and was doing her intro for everyone, welcoming Meryl Street and Andra Day who did the song [Rise Up] and then it got to me and she said: And by the way, Isha here has been passing herself off as… I almost died.
I am not surprised by her popularity at all. Not now that Ive met her on a couple of occasions. I understand it and I think if more people had the opportunity to spend one-on-one time with her there would be more people clamouring for her to run, because she is that amazing. I mean when she gave that speech during campaigning, when she just laid out her heart and said how offended she was by the Trump video, and the speech she gave during the conventions. I think those speeches really elevated her. I wouldnt want her to stand though. I think shell be far more effective outside the machinery of government. Look at what Hillary Clinton went through and the double standards that were forced upon her. Now imagine what would happen to a black woman the intersection between gender and race is just a whole other ballgame.
I asked her while we were working in Liberia: What will your post-White House years look like? and she said: This. This is what shes committed to doing lifting up girls and ripping off the roof and removing all the limitations girls feel and others impose on them and expanding their horizons. I hope thats what shes able to do. Its what shes good at and she can make such a difference.

Tamanna Islam
A 15-year-old student at Mulberry school in east London. After visiting the school in June 2015, Michelle Obama later invited a group of students, including Tamanna, to the White House in November that year
Before she came, there was such a buzz. I was in the main school hall with 300 other students. Everyone was quiet, everyone eagerly awaiting her arrival. When she walked on to the stage, we jumped to our feet clapping, shouting, crying. She brought this incredible vibe and the atmosphere was just electric.
Throughout her speech she made eye contact with everyone, and gave these little smiles. It made it feel so personal, like she was just talking to you. And then, at the end, she hugged every pupil in the front row, including me! She pulled me close, looked me in the eye and told me: Im so proud of you.
I was one of the 20 students selected by my teachers to travel to the White House in Washington DC. When we met her again, she recollected every single detail from her visit: how special it was to see us waving the American flag, how moved she was by our performance of Still I Rise [the Maya Angelou poem]. It was nerve-racking going through all of the security, but once we were inside, Michelle made us feel like we were visiting a friend. In addition to meeting her, we were introduced to lots of senior women working at the White House, such as in the justice and crime department. It was so inspiring and enlightening to see so many women and people from ethnic-minority backgrounds in positions of power.
Michelle Obama understands what it is like to be a young Muslim woman in Tower Hamlets. Your story is my story, she told our school. Growing up in a working-class environment in Chicago, she faced her own sort of unfairness, but she worked hard and showed the world that she could do anything. And if girls like us can raise our aspirations, it shows the rest of Britain, the rest of the world, that we can do anything.
Since meeting her, Ive started to seek out what I can do to make a positive change in my community. She taught me I have a responsibility to use my voice to break down negative stereotypes of Muslim women, and make change for the next generation after that. Her charisma, her energy it makes you feel like you can take on the entire world.
Dr Vanessa Ogden
Headteacher, Mulberry school
We had been approached by the American embassy a couple of months prior about the possibility of helping to launch a project on girls and education, but had no idea that Michelle Obama was involved in any way. Over about a two-month period, it became apparent that we were one of the top two institutions they were looking at and I still had no idea who was fronting the launch. We eventually found out about the visit in May 2015, and had just three weeks to get ready for her arrival in June! I learned a lot in those weeks about how to manage high-level security. One of my favourite, and most surreal, moments was standing in a school conference room, debating with special ops and secret service officers about how to manage the security in a working school environment. Of course I was nervous I had a responsibility to make things as good as they could be, and it was a very high-adrenaline time. But more than anything I just felt hugely appreciative, so grateful for what this could bring to the school.
For me, the most important aspect of the first ladys visit was making sure that every girl at Mulberry should have some kind of interaction with her, whether it was watching her speech, presenting gifts or performing a song. The whole thing, from start to finish, was for the girls. It wasnt about Mrs Obama, it wasnt about the other important people there, it was absolutely for the girls.
Thats the thing about the first lady she has no ego. These visits for her are completely non-hierarchical. Theyre about the person shes meeting, the people shes addressing. She connects with people because of who they are not because of who she is.
For example: one of the things that made the planning so complex was that we arranged to live-stream Michelles speech into the sports hall, so that every girl who couldnt fit in the main hall could experience it at the same time. It was Michelles idea to go and surprise all the girls gathered in the sports hall at the end of the speech. Thats what makes her so special she thinks so carefully and prepares so well for each visit. They had no idea she was coming, and when they saw her, they went absolutely wild.
We visited the White House in November, as part of a 10-day cultural trip to the US. Students underwent a rigorous selection process to take part, which involved attending an after-school civil rights programme, a written application, making a speech in front of a panel of teachers and finally being interviewed by myself and the governors.
After a tour of the west wing and a cuddle (and a selfie) with Bo [the Obamas pet dog], the girls sat down and asked Michelle questions, all of them quite serious. At the end, Michelle leaned forward and said, eyes glittering: Now come on. Lets talk about the things you want to know. For 15 minutes the girls and Mrs Obama chatted on a personal level, as girls and women do every day. Im afraid we made a pact to keep our discussion secret, so I cant reveal if Barack Obama does the chores.
Myesha Haque
A 17-year-old student and aspiring lawyer, who hosted the first lady when she visited Mulberry school
I couldnt believe she was there at first. I had to keep blinking and blinking. Out of all the schools in the UK, all the schools in London, she chose to come to Mulberry, our school! As deputy head prefect, I had been given the responsibility to host the first lady. Because of this, I found out about her visit earlier than any of the other students, which was so hard to keep secret. After taking photos next to the American flag, we began our tour of the school. Even just walking beside her, I was star-struck by her charisma and charm.
Walking into the main Mulberry courtyard with her was an absolutely awe-inspiring moment. The flags were waving, there was cheering, there was clapping. Four hundred students all trying to get a glimpse of her. As she met people, her eyes lit up. Her face, her body language was so uplifting you could just see how happy she was. We walked on to our Year 9 project area, where our choir, conducted by a Year 9 pupil, sang Something Inside So Strong and another student read the poem Still I Rise by Maya Angelou. While the girls were performing the First Lady hugged me to her side and murmured to me, I cannot believe this. This is amazing. I was nervous, but that warmth really comforted me. She felt like a friend, even though shes in high power. That hug was an experience Ill never forget, one Ill cherish for a lifetime.
Her story, of growing up in a working-class environment in Chicago, has made me realise I can all overcome all barriers and challenges in my life, that I can achieve anything. Weve been inspired as Mulberry students to carry on her Let Girls Learn campaign, even after she stops being first lady. Mulberry and Michelle were besties now. Were linked for life.
Ronald Ligon
A 19-year-old graduate of Harper high school, Chicago, and a member of the US military. He met Michelle Obama when she visited his school in April 2013, and was invited to the White House in June that year
All I said was that my favourite food was french fries. But that was enough to make her face split into a big smile and laugh: Thats my favourite too! She got up and hugged me just because I get the same satisfaction from french fries. It was too funny. I just felt like awh, oh my God, this is wonderful.
The first lady came to my school nearly four years ago. She sat down with a group of about 20 of us and asked us questions about our lives, about what its like to grow up in the south side [of Chicago]. For someone that has so much power, she cancelled all of that out. She told us to relax, slouch if we wanted to, make ourselves at home. Im a regular person trying to make a change, just like you are, she said. We didnt have to use big words or act proper to get through to her, we could just be ourselves.
For about three hours we talked to her about the violence in our communities. She wasnt surprised she grew up in Englewood [Chicago] and lived through a bunch of shootings around her house but she was hurt that we have to go through it every single day.
Honestly, If I hadnt met Michelle Obama, I might not be where I am today. Pretty much two weeks after I returned after visiting the first lady in the White House, my family got into a big fight with other people in my community. We ended up losing our home, and for about four to five months we were homeless. The first couple of months I was really low. I didnt want to go to school, I didnt want to do anything. I had no hope.
But then one day I came back to find my mom on the couch crying, saying that she couldnt provide for us, that she had failed our family. It hurt so bad to see her so sad. I remembered, then, how Michelle had told me that no matter what hardships you have, theres always a strong possibility you can overcome them. Looking at my mom sitting there crying, I decided to step up. I got back into school and I got a job working eight hours a day, seven days a week. I got enough money to fix things for my mom and get the house were living in now. I graduated from school and I enrolled in the military. I got back on track because of the first ladys words, because of the honesty and trust that she put in me. I try not to remind myself too much about those times, but whenever Im in a deep situation I always look back on that moment.
Im still not over how Donald Trump won and how were going to lose both the first lady and Barack Obama as well. Im so happy I got to meet her in person, twice, but Im really going to miss them.
Fouzya Toukart
She met Michelle Obama in Morocco in June 2016 as part of her Let Girls Learn initiative and the CNN film We Will Rise
Im the first girl in the family to get a baccalaureate and the first girl in the village to get a BA. I come from an illiterate family: my parents are farmers in the village, they are poor people. Getting an education was like a war for me it felt like everyone was against me. The mentalities in my village are all the same: girls have to marry and have kids and stay home and cook, like machines, and thats it.
In primary school I was top of my class but my family decided I would not go to secondary school. It was really hard for me, but I went on a hunger strike when I was 12 and I convinced them to let me go. The secondary school was very far, seven kilometres each way, and I was the only girl. In the beginning my parents were not convinced, but after I kept getting the highest grades, I could see in their faces that they were satisfied and proud. I got a BA in English in Marrakesh, and my goal is to get a doctorate and be a translator and linguist I speak Amazigh, Arabic, French, English and Japanese.
I met Michelle Obama in Marrakech in June, just when I was doing my final exam, and meeting her was like a push for continuing. The thing I remember most is that she saw me and said: Yes, I read a lot about you and I remember you that was really awesome. I also met Meryl Streep and Freida Pinto, and they were very kind-hearted and friendly too. Later I had a week in Washington DC it was my first time flying anywhere and met Michelle Obama again there. They say Washington gets busy and loud, but it was super fun.
Michelle Obama has helped so many people, and shes always been the person who fights for something which is very good for our society. With education were going to find solutions for so many problems in life. My message for all the girls around the world who dont have the opportunity to go and study, I just want to tell them that if I can do it, they can do it too, whatever the boundaries they can be overcome.
Cindy Sanders
A counsellor at King college prep in Chicago. Fifteenyear-old schoolgirl Hadiya Pendleton, who attended King, was shot and killed in 2013
I met Michelle Obama during Hadiyas funeral. She felt compelled to come to Chicago and pay her respects to Cleopatra and Nate [Pendleton, Hadiyas parents], not necessarily as the first lady but as a mom, to support another mother who had lost her child. It was very moving that she would put all of her stuff on hold for the funeral. Two years later she spoke at the graduation of the class that Hadiya would have graduated in. It was a bittersweet graduation because of this, but everybody was excited, because weve never had a speaker of this calibre. The students will remember that for ever, that Michelle Obama was the graduation speaker for their class. She talked about how she came from just this community, and how the students have so many options, and that anything is possible with an education. We all got to take photos with her and talk to her. She congratulated us, and thanked us for doing a great job with the students.
Having a first lady from the south side of Chicago means everything. Shes like the peoples first lady, and shes definitely Chicagos first lady. She was very personable: she was giving hugs, she was giving motivation. And not just surface motivation; it was because she had been in a Chicago public school. And to see what she accomplished, having a similar background and a similar upbringing it was powerful. Its very inspiring to see that with hard work and determination you can be anything.
In Chicago the whole issue of gun control is so polarised: people are getting killed by guns, and we need to do something about this. We dont want parents losing their teenage children. I have a teenager too in the city of Chicago and so we definitely need to speak up on that. And when you have the first lady championing causes it definitely puts some weight with it.
Ill miss her being in that office, but the good thing is shes still going to champion those causes shes still going to care about helping children reach higher, and having counsellors support them. Shes tough but shes also down to earth. And well miss her putting on her jeans and being on Ellen and challenging her to dance-offs.
Kyra Caldwell
A 19-year-old former student at King college prep and friend of Hadiya Pendleton
When my friend Hadiya passed, Michelle Obama ended up coming to the funeral. They had a few people in a separate room before the funeral started, and she came in went around and shook our hands. I was with a friend and we were so nervous we were about to shake hands with Michelle Obama, the first African American to be first lady in the White House. She came over and gave us both hugs, and gave us words of encouragement. The fact that she hugged me was just crazy to me. Usually youd think people who are famous would act fake, but she was the complete opposite when I spoke to her it was very calm and normal, very natural. She also came to speak at our graduation and gave a really motivational speech, which was really exciting.
Our school had done this FAFSA challenge [a video for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid]: it was Scandal-themed [after the US TV political drama series] and we sent it in to Michelle Obama. She then sent it to the cast of Scandal and got them to make a video telling us how good our video was. So you had [characters] Olivia Pope and Huck and Abby saying we did a good FAFSA challenge thats something Ill always remember.
Its very reassuring that shes another woman of colour from the south side of Chicago. I feel like once youre born and raised here you always have a connection to it, wherever you go. She went to the same high school as my mother, so it makes it seem more real: anybody can go anywhere, no matter where youre from. I also attended Tuskegee University in Alabama, and I found out that she had also spoken at a graduation there, so I was thinking: Is this a sign that Im going to be the first lady next time?
When I think of Michelle Obama, reassuring is the word I think of. Shes brilliant she went to two Ivy League schools [Princeton and Harvard Law School] and has done all these great things. Its definitely something to look up to. Im now studying occupational therapy, and after this the plan is to go to a really good physical therapy school so I can get my doctorate. Michelle said we can do anything, so I believe it.
