Contrarian-Cold Parallels

Something I think is super underrated is the parallels between the Cold and the Contrarian. Because, though they present themselves very differently, at heart, they're much more similar than you'd initially believe.

The Contrarian is someone who strives to piss off the Narrator. Whatever he does, he just wants to ruin the Narrator's day. Have some fun, and mess with Narrator; those are his two main goals. He doesn't actually have bad intentions, though. He never wanted to create a fusion of multiple princesses like in the Stranger, in fact, he seems incredibly remorseful. He never realized the weight of his actions, that's all. The Contrarian is much more caring than he seems at first glance, trying to get the player to help turn the princess back at the end of the stranger route, and softening up considerably at the Shifting Mound's heart.

The Cold is actually pretty similar to this, though he has his differences. He, at heart, strives to ruin the Narrator's day and have fun/stay interested in things. Though he's considerably less remorseful for the fate of the princess than the Contrarian, he definitely is more caring than he appears at first glance. He tries to help the Slayer in his own way in Moment of Clarity (I believe it's even implied Cold's powers were what the Slayer used to help stay sane), and he tries to help the other voices bear through terrible pain using his advice of staying numb.

So, they both:

Want things to be interesting

Want to ruin the Narrator's day as much as possible

Don't really seem care about much else other than the two aforementioned goals

Can be surprisingly feeling despite their initial, uncaring presentation

Both seriously underestimate the consequences of their actions—With Contrarian underestimating the harm you can do to the princess, and Cold underestimating the harm she can do to you (sure she's just a ghost, bud, suuuure.)

Funnily enough, though, they spawn from opposing courses of action. Disobeying the Narrator from the start until you accidentally unravel everything (including yourself), and obeying the Narrator until he unravels everything, and then having no other choice but to purposefully end yourself to escape the eternal void he's trapped you in.

And so their presentations seem opposite: The lackadaisical, mischievous, prankster type; and the stoic, serious, calm type. But they both have a major, dare I say character-defining trait in common:

A seeming apathy towards everything except pissing off the Narrator.

In Cold's main route, and most of his others, you literally stab yourself because, well, fuck the Narrator and this torturous eternal void. And Contrarian's routes are... Pretty self-explanatory. You walk away with no discernable goal but the lulz and pissing off the Narrator.

Despite seemingly being completely opposite courses of action, these paths begin to converge into endings much more similar than they seem. You did everything so differently, but in the end, you're still here. With an unknown princess, and a voice who seems to care for naught but entertainment and that pesky raven in your head.

So different on the outside, yet so similar at the heart of it all; that's something I love about these two.

   ↑ mr. mathews wasn't abusive, but he wasn't the greatest dad to have. he did actually try to support his family and be there for them, but he and his wife (her name is martha in my au) always got into arguments and it really had a bad affect on two. i mean, he and his dad did argue from time to time, but they were quite close. mr. mathews left a month before shannon was born. (two-bit was eleven at the time.) usually two-bit doesn't talk/think about their dad but when they do it's kinda hard for them 'cause they actually did have a good relationship and had a strong bond that collapsed the moment two realized his father wasn't coming back.

the feminine urge to curl up inside a warm, breathing belly as a way to escape from the horrors of the real world

nothing would make me feel more secure than being cradled in the hands of someone so unfathomably giant and so, so, so kind. i need that right now. i need to be cared for. the thought of tender fingers curling around me as their maw opens up, a large, soft tongue curling around me slowly, reminding me of what i'm getting myself into. they'd be taking their time so as not to alarm me. with every twitch and jolt of my tiny body they would hesitate, afraid to startle me. as they hold their mouth open, warm breaths akin to that of a sugary-scented summer's breeze would wash over me in a steady, rhythmic pace. i would imagine the movement of their lungs as they breathe, envisioning each organic swell and contraction. they'd take pleasure in knowing what all i'd be thinking, aware after a certain point that my sheepish behavior is not fear, but rather,, something more light-hearted.

and then, i'd be pulled in. the light from the outside world would fade, replaced by a pitch-blackness unlike anything else. it's a comforting, breathing darkness that swallows me whole. this darkness is alive, and it tells me to simply relax. there is no need to strain my eyes with the light in an obnoxious, heartless world. darkness inside of them is where i find peace. besides, i know i'm not alone. if i was alone, the ground would not be shifting and squirming. there would be a soft *squelch* as the saliva trapped underneath their tongue is shifted about, eliciting a chuckle from me. i'd almost be able to feel the way they'd smile around me, knowing at the very least that they got me to laugh if nothing else. my laugh would trail off as my hands brush against their teeth, sharpened at the tips and yet completely harmless to me. to the lasagna i fixed from earlier, no, but i'm alive. i'm a person. they're free to tear into that lasagna as much as they'd like, matter of fact! i worked hard on it. me, however? i'm delicate to them. they know they must be gentle with me. they'd never use their teeth to hurt me. though, i do recognize that they'd like me to pay attention to those teeth of theirs. their tongue, soft and folded underneath me, would move to poke at the divot in one of their molars, bringing my attention to it in the process. i'd smooth my trusting hand over their molar and thumb at every individual detail. it's fascinating, really. i think a big reason why vore intrigues me so much to begin with is because it's all so terribly captivating. everything is alive, and everything alive surrounds me. it's comforting.

i really think we need to appreciate just how nice mouths are, y'know? i think that's an underrated part in vore. there's so much material, and yet it goes untouched for the most part, but i digress

we'd need to move on eventually. their maw would start to fill up with drool, and since i would have been anticipating the upcoming part, i'd already be comfortable and prepared for their tongue to lift, lift, lift, and send me sliding down their throat into a hot, pulsing abyss. every inch of my body would be coated in a thick blanket of slobber by this point, and i imagine that'd definitely make the journey down their esophagus much, much easier. i think most people fail to realize just how challenging it'd be to swallow someone whole without chewing, regardless of their size. or maybe we choose to overlook it bc vore can't technically exist at all irl anyway idk. i like to ramble lol

at some point, the tight, throbbing walls of their gullet would transition into a different space. i'd slip inside, recognizing my ability to move around and get comfortable unlike the other organ i was squeezed into after their swallow. as i'd lean my head back against the fleshy abdominal wall behind me, i'd feel a lack of resistance comparable to a beanbag chair and how it feels to lay in one. the walls would adjust to this new weight, moving to surround me. i would be cradled and held. adored instinctively. their stomach doesn't obviously have cognitive thought, but somewhere within the deep recesses of their mind, their brain perceives me as being more than just sustenance. i am loved here. this is my safe space, and nobody else would be able to agree. that is how i want this to be. if i could write my name somewhere in here, i would. that wouldn't last very long, though.

not a word would be exchanged between the two of us, and yet our silence holds more weight than anything we could say. my throat would feel dry, and i'd swallow a few times before raising my hand to pat at the lining of their precious gut. they'd laugh outwardly, and i'd know that if i could purr, i would be doing it. the tension in my muscles would dissolve into warmth, spreading throughout my small body. i am fragile and exposed, but that is how i like it. it's nice to feel small while being small.

for them, i'm unsure how they'd feel. i like to think that, while unnatural, this process would be enjoyable for them. the stinging ache behind their collarbone would be evidence of me, a reminder of the tiny body they carried into a comforting space. their soft fingers would rub at their neck, gracing over the spot near their adam's apple where i once was. they'd swallow again, feeling the bob of their throat. their hand would trail down to their stomach, pausing right above the taut flesh above their belly. with every rise and fall of my chest they'd feel movement, and they'd attempt to mimic it. i think they'd take in every foreign sensation one at a time, and i'd appreciate that. we're both still new to this, after all.

as they'd adjust themselves to get comfortable in bed, my environment would slowly move with me. i'd wait until i could no longer feel their movement, and then i'd curl up on my side in a small pool of gastric juices and drool. though very muffled, i'd hear the smacking of their lips and their deep, pleased hums as they savor what would be left of my recognizable taste clinging to the surfaces of their mouth. i might even hear them licking their fingers. i'd roll my eyes and bury my face into my arms, only to lift my head upon realizing that my arms are coated in slime. silly me. how could i forget? even with the constant drum of a strong heartbeat and the churning from below of a meal i prepared hours ago for them sounding all around me?

"you're a dork," i'd call out to them, my voice audibly cracking after so long of having nothing to say. the rumbling laughter that would surround me and the way their walls would squeeze around me briefly would remind me of just how small and frail i truly am within them.

"says the one who asked to be eaten earlier," they'd tease, a hint of playfulness evident in their tone. i'd scoff.

"yeah, well, i know you enjoy it. you'd be a liar to say you don't like the aftertaste i left in your mouth earlier," i would reply. they'd pause, and then i'd hear a hum without reply. being the way i am, i'd take that as surrender. not that it mattered. they'd be in a more lovey-dovey mood anyway.

the way they'd yawn would send chills speeding up my spine despite the hot, stale air within the depths of their insides. i'd reciprocate the yawn and then settle in contentedly once and for all within them, finding peace in the silence that would arise again. sometimes i like the silence between us more anyway. it's nice to enjoy your presence, especially when it's all that i can enjoy, really. i'm trapped within you. there's nothing else to focus on. everything is you. everything i look at, smell, hear, breathe in... it's you. it's all you.

Been thinking...

So, because of the absence of brozone's parents in the 3rd movie, we assume that they either were killed or terrible parents, so comes in John having to raise his siblings (presumably) by himself. Their grandma probably not being much help.

We usually talk about the stress and impact it probably had on John, suddenly having to step us as the leader of the household at such a young age, but what about Bruce - the second oldest?

Bruce probably witnessed the change of character of John, watching his brother force himself to mature. From being a goofy and playful older brother who loved to sleep in, to someone who'd already be busy in the morning and somehow always tired, a sad look evident in his eyes. Especially when their younger brothers started to enter the picture.

He would notice how there would already be breakfast on the table once he awakes, how JD would immediately take action whenever either Clay or Floyd would start to cry or throw a tantrum, immediately running to their side cheering them up, and how the eldest would always be the last to sleep and the first to wake up the next day.

He'd also witnessed John start Brozone, and he'd do his best to help, just wanting to see his brother genuinely smile again. All he wanted was to see the brother who would give him piggyback rides every morning as their mom would make breakfast, the brother who'd easily laugh at his jokes and make funny faces all the time, the brother who'd chase him around the pod then proceeding to tickle him relentlessly once he caught him. He just wants his older brother back. To see him again.

But after years passed, and his younger brothers started to get involved in the boyband and a new baby arrives (Branch), that hope started to feel impossible. John was now annoying, controlling, and obsessed with being perfect. Barely thinking about the well-being of others at this point, his only goal is to please the fans and make sure Brozone is in top shape.

Bruce hated this. He hated the toxicity weighing down their relationship as brothers. He hated always being told to do better because it's always never enough. He hated John, and it hurts him to feel that way towards his first friend, and now first enemy.

And so you bet it broke his heart immensely when the boyband broke up, and that John was the first to leave. Not even leaving with a proper goodbye or a guarantee that he's coming back. Not even bothering to look back at any of his brothers, not even to him.

But even if he was so angry and tired of his shit that night, a distant part of his heart sobbed when John left the pod. If he didn't have self-control and pride, he'd probably just break down there and then. But instead, he also walked out, desperate to leave and finally be able to breathe again.

Fast forward to 20 years later, you bet it took every bit of Bruce's willpower not to tackle John in a tight hug once he laid his eyes on him again. Despite the heartaches and tears JD had caused in the past, he was still his brother, and he may not admit it out loud, but he still loves John, so much, and he missed him, so so badly.

I have a filthy confession to make. I still love Volkswagens. Yeah, I hear you air-cooled folks in the background screaming at me about how spending ten thousand dollars for approximately 36 horsepower is a way more fun way to exist. To you, I have no polite reply. You have gone so far down the rabbit hole (get it?) that there is simply nothing that can be done to rehabilitate you into regular society. For the rest of us, I think we can all acknowledge that the Mk3 GTI is underrated.

Sure, when they were new, and even when they were a little bit old, nobody liked the Mk3. You've got the Mk2, which is fun and zingy, and the Mk4, which is luxurious and fast. The Mk3 is... neither of those things. So everyone threw them in the bin as soon as they could, and went to go buy Audi Allroads instead. Joke's on you, suckers. You accidentally made those shitboxes into rare collectibles and I hope the exploding-heater-core coolant burns to your face and genitals heal quickly.

Thing is, there's just something about these terrible cars. Maybe it's because they're boxy. Possibly it's because I have a compulsive hoarding behaviour that makes me want to rescue unloved vehicles from oblivion. For me, the disease is so bad that I'll sometimes drive past farmer's fields in the most racist part of the outskirts of my city. And then, I will finally be able to live my fantasy of owning and operating a car I didn't want twenty years ago.

Main Messages from Trolls Band Together

Family isn't perfect, and is often complicated. It's full of ups and downs, but what's important is being there for each other.

2. Family doesn't have to mean blood: Poppy at first says Bridget is 'like' a sister, then after hanging out with Viva she realizes her and Bridget act like sisters, then Poppy ends with referring to Bridget as her second sister.

Also, Poppy and Viva are included in the family harmony and the family song at the end, yet they are not related to Brozone. Poppy and Branch are only dating, not married - but he and Poppy have such a strong connection and care about / support each other so much, that she and her sister are already part of Branch's family.

3. Just because someone is related to you doesn't mean they're allowed to treat you badly.

And lastly, the most underrated and perhaps most important lesson in this movie:

4. Bad behaviour needs to be punished

I figured Velvet and Veneer would get off easy, the usual kid's movie ending where the villains suddenly transform into good people and everyone loves them now, or at best the villains run away never to be seen again.

Instead, we see Veneer with a change of heart, but not Velvet. We saw right from the beginning that Velvet is the true villain, and Veneer is half-heartedly going along with it because she's his sister so he feels he has to support her.

Then Velvet rightfully gets arrested, but so does Veneer - even though he realizes he was wrong, he still did bad things as Crimp pointed out, and should be punished. A quote from the Land Before Time movies, movie #7, describes this perfectly: "He may be sorry, but it doesn't change what he did, and he must be responsible for that. We must all be accountable for our actions."

It's SO nice to see this lesson. Too often characters commit terrible crimes and get nothing more than 'that wasn't nice, please be nicer', 'okay, I will', and then the bad stuff is just 'oh well'. And this happens way too much in real life too - people get away with anything because 'punishment is mean'. No, it's not, it teaches people right from wrong, and/or stops bad people from continuing to hurt innocent people. Like Veneer, some people can change. But like Velvet, some people are just evil.

Or, y'know, a "I'll take this hit so you don't have to" man. Talking to someone about their feelings was all kinds of weird, so usually he just left the space for someone else to talk. And, well... Magnus wasn't good at words. But there's a few different ways to get his support across.

Mostly gen with some Magnulia, 8.6k. You've all heard of the classic 5 Plus 1, but obviously Magnus deserves a 7 Plus 1! I don't know how to describe it without spoilers other than being full of incredibly sweet, gentle takes on so many fraught or bittersweet moments. Super underrated, do give it a read.

Embrace the Dark by @ceilingfan5: Bookstore coworkers Kravitz and Taako get more than they bargained for when Taako tries to use his powers to fix Kravitz's migraine. But it's okay--it's an excuse for them to spend time together until one of them can nut up and ask the other out.

Taakitz, 8.9k. Modern with Superpowers AU! Super sweet interactions between Kravitz and Taako, paired with lots of fun background worldbuilding. And, of course, a very special grilled cheese sandwich.

Break This Heavy Chain by Punka_Writes: In the immediate aftermath of Story and Song, Barry Bluejeans could really use a hug.

Blupjeans and misc. platonic interactions, 2.3k. The absolute epitome of comfort food in written form, with excellent Barry characterization (and of course, he does get that hug)!

birds of a feather steal sweaters together by @holdmecloser-gandydancer: When you're a big, burly guy it seems that your clothes just become free reign for all your friends. Normally Magnus is a reasonable guy, but everyone has their limits.

Gen (IPRE crew), 1.9k. Starblaster era fluff! Everyone is written absolutely delightfully, and every time I read it I snort out loud at least twice.

Security by @ceilingfan5: Barry has finally made it--his incredible scientific discovery has landed him a huge fortune...and a lot of problems. The only good thing that's come of it, honestly, has been his bodyguard, Lup. (And the science. That's good also.) He's just gotta stay normal about how nice it is to have someone like Lup around, and also not perish by way of press circuit, and everything will be fine.

Blupjeans, 6k. Modern with magic AU from Barry's POV, featuring equal parts anxiety and pining. Also, it's straight-up extremely funny.

Lonesome Dreams by @jerreeeeeee: Taako wakes up one morning from a nightmare, fast fading. There was a guy in glasses, and they were… somewhere high up? Something terrible happened, but he doesn’t remember. He wakes up in a wagon he’s never seen before, but it has his name on it. There’s tons of food inside, more than he’d be able to afford. And he’s alone. Thinking back to the last thing he remembers is difficult. College? No, he’d graduated. Top of his class, obviously, he remembers that. But what- what happened after? Where is Lup?

Gen (Taako & Lup), 10.2k. Everything starts out the same, except Taako remembers Lup, even if not how she went missing, and it's incredibly underrated and full of phenomenal characterization. I won't spoil how things shake out, but it's a great emotional ride and I genuinely reread it all the time.

it's my party and I'll mope if I want to by @holdmecloser-gandydancer: Taako's birthday is just another Thursday. A detective and an old friend have a different idea.

Gen (Taako & Lucretia & Angus), 2.1k. Short and so sweet! Fics about voidfished!Taako's birthday never get old, and this is one of my absolute favorites. Nailing the angst-to-wholesome ratio.

Tedious Familiarity by @barry-j-blupjeans: Déjà vu. Noun. A feeling of having already experienced the present situation. A tedious familiarity. Barry Bluejeans woke up in a cave, fresh out of a pod filled with green goop, and saddled with an unsettling feeling that he had been here before. If you had asked forty-year-old Barry if he would follow instructions left by a talking coin, he probably would have asked you what type of drugs you were on. But, y’know, fifty… two? Fifty-one? How old was he? Fifty-two sounded right. But, y’know, fifty-two years old Barry didn’t really have that many other places to turn, so this couldn't be all that bad.

Gen, 4.1k. Missing scenes based off Barry's decade alone, written in such an effective style, where all the little details truly make it. Mandatory reading for fellow Barry angst enjoyers.

Angus McDonald and the Wonderland Escape Rooms by coppersunshine: When Angus gets grounded from detecting, to keep his skills sharp he becomes a patron of the Wonderland Escape rooms, run by Edward and Lydia, who quickly decide he's their new nemesis. To their surprise, Angus and the collection of weird adults he's accompanied by decide otherwise.

Gen (Angus & Edward & Lydia), 7k. Modern with magic AU, putting Edward and Lydia in the absolute funniest possible job, at which a little boy detective torments... and maybe, even gives them a chance to turn over a new leaf. I am of the opinion that Angus and the Wonderland twins have a criminally underexplored dynamic, and this fic gave me everything I wanted.

If the Sun and Moon Should Doubt by Punka_Writes: Merle Highchurch, on the brink of a bad decision.

Gen, 1.6k. Merle character study immediately before running out on his marriage. Truly the incredible characterization that Merle deserves; this was a fic that really ignited my love for him.

Greensleeves by @sgrumby: Kravitz has never seen a lich like this before, and he's seen a lot of liches. Merle is just trying to save the universe, thanks very much.

Gen (Kravitz & Merle), 2.2k. A unique and also absolutely genius Lich!Merle AU where Kravitz inevitably comes after him, and Merle is... well, the Peacemaker, of course!

i've gotten a few questions about the maitlands but they got buried with other asks and once they're out of my sight i just forget BUT please know i love the maitlands and god they are so terribly underrated, especially musical maitlands.....

i've seen people say they're THE protagonists of beetlejuice but i'm not sure i agree, both the first movie and the musical are more of ensemble casts....meaning it's easier to brush them aside in favor of beetlejuice or lydia, who in the end ended up being the core duo of the franchise. IT'S SAD but at the same time i feel like they did everything they could've done, storywise, i'm not too sure what else there is to say beyond expanding upon them being parental figures to lydia. i think the lack of potential in that regard is what makes people forget about them....most fans always get stuck thinking about the potential of a character. beetlejuice is on screen for 15 minutes but there's A LOT of potential and room for theorizing and character exploration, so people will gravitate towards him and will definitely want to write about him a lot in comparison.

tl;dr they're super underrated but at the same time it makes sense people don't focus on them as much.

LCB Crew date scenarios

This turned out longer than I first anticipated, so it's going under the cut. Feel free to take these and run with them, they're here for your enjoyment!

Yi Sang: He takes his partner somewhere calm, where they can enjoy some alone time. Preferably somewhere where they can stargaze. He talks about everything that's been on his mind and confesses the things that have been gnawing at his core. He asks his partner to tell him what's been on their mind, and carefully listens to it all. After the date, he brainstorms ways of helping his partner. If it's anything out of the scope of his capabilities, he makes sure to be there for them whenever he can, and to motivate them through their struggles.

Faust: She's either always performing maintenance on an invention or in the middle of solving a complex mathematical problem. It may not look like it, but she appreciates that her partner's still hanging around. Their presence gives her an energy and motivation boost. She occasionally bounces ideas off her partner, and takes time to explain to them ideas and concepts that they may be unfamiliar with. After they spend some time together, she will make sure to reward them by creating something unique and based on their interests.

Don Quixote: It is definitely a convention or faire based on her interests. It's a loud place, there's people all around but somehow she ends up being louder than everybody else. It's rushed, she's dragging her partner to all booths. Their feet hurt. She will get so much merch both her and her partner will be loaded after they leave the convention. She will then show that for every little thing she got for herself, she got something for her partner too! She will thank her partner for accompanying her in this adventure and make an exaggerated love confession. She will massage their feet and then talk all about the things she loved in the convention for the rest of the night.

Ryoushu: It's a concert. The music is maybe electronic or rock but it's too loud and her partner's ears are ringing. They're both in the middle of the crowd, there's no room for intimacy and yet there is no space between herself and her partner's body. Everybody is squeezed together too close, it's difficult to push through. It sounds like a terrible place for a date, but she holds their hand through it all. Somehow they haven't gotten separated from each other. She calls her partner's attention and speaks in their ear: "All as one," she begins. She explains to her partner in few words that the crowd moves like the waves on the ocean. There is beauty in chaos. There is art in human flesh. Afterwards, she will take her partner to a pub and ask them what's their impression of the concert. She will listen to them for as long as they want to speak. A week or so later she will gift her partner something she crafted herself. It reminds them of the concert night and the time they both spent together.

Meursault: He takes his partner to a club. It's not the place they were expecting, but it is certainly a place! He will order drinks for them both and then ask his partner to tell him what their impression of the place is. He doesn't really dance, but sometimes he taps his foot to the rhythm. He seems much more relaxed than usual and the drinks help him ease up a little bit more. His expression hardly changes but his face lights up when he is content. He even smiles a little here and there. As the night progresses, he will sit closer to his partner, even put his hand over theirs. He will walk them out of the club later, his fingers interwoven with those of his partner. It is an uneventful date and later he will gift them something that is meaningful. It comes accompanied with a neatly handwritten card that speaks of his appreciation for his partner.

Hong Lu: At home movie night! With the help of his friends, he picked a selection of horror/slasher movies that are said to be underrated, unique in concept or odd in some way. He doesn't really like gore, but he read/heard people tend to get closer together when watching scary movies. It ends up working because some scenes actually scare him, making him cling to his partner. He thinks twice if he wants to go through the rest of the list, but decides to hang in there. The odd movies are funnier than they are scary, and both him and his partner are able to laugh away the fear. As the night grows longer, he will lean onto his partner or maybe cuddle in bed with them while another movie begins. They don't really see it progress, as both fall asleep. He makes sure to thank his partner for spending time with him and then gives a gift that is super expensive.

Heathcliff: He tried taking his partner to a fancy restaurant. He thought it would be the proper thing to do, since he's serious and all that. It was a terrible idea. They keep asking him if he's fine. He's sweating cold as he tries to remember which spoon is the one you use for the soup. He messed up his speech when ordering and the waiter looked at him funny. He's five seconds away from either bashing somebody's head in or bashing his own head into a wall. His partner reassures him they don't need to stay in that restaurant, but now he's stubborn. He will go through that dinner even if that kills him. It ends up killing him. He's been sitting in bed after getting home, sweating cold as he fights off a wave of nausea. His stomach couldn't really handle the exotic food. He's super embarrassed about it. His partner reassures him it's fine, and they can try something less stressful another time. He will shower his partner in gifts for weeks to come, in order to both apologize for his stupidity and show his appreciation for their patience with him.

Ishmael: She takes her partner to a pub/bar she knows well. It's a loud place, full of sketchy people who seem to be ready to start a fight whenever. Somehow, the patrons of the place know her and show her respect. She grins through it all, being loud and taunting one guy or another. Her partner is a little nervous about it, but her confidence manages to soothe them a bit. She orders drinks for them both, drags her partner in to sing along a song or another that has come up in the jukebox and even pulls them into a dance. The ambient looked sketchy at first, but after a while it just seems like a gathering of good old friends. The night somehow ends in a big bar fight, which she drags her partner out of while laughing and throwing a good punch here and there. She reassures them the people in the establishment will be fine, and that that kind of thing happens a lot. She promises her partner she will teach them how to throw a good punch, and also how to look scary in case they don't want to throw any punches. If none of these options work, she knows a guy.

Rodion: Shopping. Spree. She takes her partner on a shopping trip and thank god her arms are strong because she's bought so many things. She's carrying most of the weight herself and it doesn't look like it's making her break a sweat. She is happy to talk about her haul, until a few security guards approach them both. Something about a cloned credit card. Uh, oh... She throws all the shopping bags at the guards, grabs her partner's hand and makes a run for it. If they are too slow to accompany, she will pick them up and carry them. She's not letting her partner in crime get caught! They manage to make it out of the mall before getting caught, and although her partner is nervous, she's just laughing it off. They ask her if that will be a problem and she grins, saying she just has to get out of the mall before security finds them out next time. She takes something out of her pocket, showing her partner that although most of the haul is lost, she still managed to save a little trinket for them.

Sinclair: He didn't know where to go for a date. He asked all his friends what was the best place to take his significant other to, and he got very different answers from each person. He's terribly unsure, and in his panic decided to choose going to the cinema in the last minute. He dressed up nicely, he made sure he had enough money to pay for everything. He stressed over it so. Much. In the end he picked a basic romcom, sat in to watch it and when the movie began, he realized he was being stupid for stressing so much over something so simple. The movie is fun, the popcorn is just fine, but what matters the most is being able to hold his partner's hand and see their smile. He decides to buy his partner a plush or something nice when they get out of the cinema.

Outis: Theater performance. It's something dramatical, some kind of historical piece. It's full of romance, betrayal and plot twists. She sits besides her partner, a small smile on her lips. Sometimes her partner can catch her muttering the lines under her breath. It is a moving performance, and when it is over, Outis takes her partner to a restaurant. It's a quiet place with jazz playing in the background. Not terribly fancy but not bad either. While browsing the menu, she asks her partner's opinion on the play. She listens carefully, and then reveals that it's a piece she enjoys enough so that she always watches it whenever she can. She confesses she wanted to share with them something that is as special and timeless to her as her appreciation for them. She makes sure to ask them about things they like so she can plan ahead for their next date.

Gregor: Oh gee, he didn't prepare anything special and he's really short on cash, so a homemade dinner should do, right? Right??? Except whatever he had in the oven is burnt. He got a bit too distracted trying to make his hair look right in the mirror. By the time his partner got to him, his tie was loose around his neck and his shoelaces were untied. He is so sorry everything turned out terribly. It takes a true angel to forgive him for such a blunder. His partner does, though. That's why they're together. They gracefully just decide to order food, it's okay. Gregor is blessed to have somebody as kind by his side. He spends the entire night doting on his partner and showering them in love and appreciation. He then makes sure to dedicate a good portion of his next paycheck to buying them something really special.

Bonus

Vergilius: He's overworked and exhausted, but he remembered he promised a date. He wanted his partner to pick a location because he didn't know where to go, and not like he goes anywhere outside work. His partner left the choice to be up to him, and so he decided they would stay in. A terrible storm rages outside, and power goes out. He lights up a few candles and wearily sighs, apologizing to his partner for this precarious situation. He thought they could turn the tv on and let some movie play, but without power that has become impossible. His second best idea for entertainment is the few story books he has around the house. He gets cozy with his partner on the couch and opens one. With the help of the candle light, he reads them a story that eventually lulls them into sleep. Vergilius closes the book and smiles one of his rare, unseen smiles. He kisses their forehead and picks them up, carrying them to bed. They cling to each other, and in spite of the storm raging outside, have a restful sleep.

Maybe Eggman admires Big for being fat and physically capable. Eggman takes pride in the size and shape of his body so maybe he gets excited whenever he sees another fatty who can perform athletic feats.

Yesss I do like to imagine them both feeling a type of kinship. From Eggman's perspective, meeting another fat guy who is also very strong and comfortable with his body, though not in the extremely egotistical way he goes about it lol

And for Big it's finally meeting another guy who is fat and is the same height. He's used to always looking down at everyone else and being the fat one. And one of my favorites which makes part of this canon: he has a funny mustache like Eggman!

This is so cute he looks at Eggman and thinks "hey he has one just like me!" the boys are both beautifully fat and have precious whiskers and have the cutest ship name of BigEgg, a perfect match fhsjfnskgdgh 🥰

I can see Big finding it cool that they both have big round bellies, are tall, have whiskers, and if he saw body hair on Eggman's chest and tummy he'd think "he has a bit of fur like me too!" 💜 I like to imagine them having fascinations and curiosities with their similarities and differences so they compare what they both have and explore what they don't with each other

Because then they also have a bunch of perfect opposites attract attributes, like Big lives in nature while Eggman's world is all mechanical, Big is simple minded and Eggman is a 300 IQ genius, Big is chill af and Eggman has a terrible temper, Big is selfless and cares for his friends and Eggman is selfish and only cares about himself, Big is pure hearted and Eggman is evil hearted

They're so underrated man. With that there's another similarity between them irl too, in the way that Eggman and Big are commonly hated, seen a joke, or at least not cared about for various reasons in fandom, a lot of the times being because they're fat and not "conventionally attractive" and very misinterpreted characters

firstly, iron is strict. like, super strict. everyone knows this. but what most in the mbcc miss is that she's strict because she cares. she cares so, so much and it shows in how she wants the absolute best for you. hence why she gets pushy and a little bossy at time when she sees you neglecting your health in even the most minor ways.

that being said, iron is terrible at taking care of herself. she can manage, for sure, but it's more surviving than living. she sustains herself on junk food and coffee, because that's whats efficient, but not necessarily good. hence, iron would appreciate it so much if you made or bought some proper meals for her and you to share. anything you bring her tastes far better than what she makes herself, and she loves it more when you make them yourself--especially if they're in those cute little bento boxes, not that she'd ever admit that.

another thing iron would appreciate, i think, are massages. i feel like she carries a lot of tension in her shoulders, so if you manage to catch her while she's free and forcefully sit her down for a few minutes to relax the tense muscles, she'd be just melting into your touch. all in all, iron is an acts of service kind of woman.

as for how iron likes to give affection, i think it's somewhat the same. she has your chart completely memorized, and always has your health in mind. if you go out on missions together, she's always a step ahead of you, shielding half your body with her own. she's a caretaker at her core, and though she's a doctor and injuries are nothing new to her, she hates seeing you hurt. she's good at keeping her emotions under check, but she can't stop her pulse from jumping if you cry out in pain or if she sees blood running down a wound somewhere on your body. iron's a busy woman, but she makes an exception when you're injured. she'll spend her nights by your bedside until you recover, nagging the whole way, but she'll hold your hand as you sleep, feeling the steady pulse of your wrist beneath her fingers and letting herself be grounded in the fact that you're here. you're alive. everything's going to be alright.

sometimes life does get to iron. she thinks of all the people she couldn't save, all the promises she couldn't keep. on nights like these she finds solace in your arms, where she can set down the weight of being this cold, calculating doctor and just be human again. in these moments she lets herself be held by you, lets you run your hand through her dark hair. she lets you intertwine your fingers with the cold metal ones of her prosthetic, and she watches with tired but quietly loving eyes as you bring them to your lips and press the softest kiss to them. as if to say, you did your best. you did your best, and you still deserved to be loved for it all the same.

in the end, i think iron isn't a whirlwind romance kind or hot-blooded passion kind of woman. when it comes to love, iron needs it to be like something to come home to, something calm and quiet and a refuge from everything else, which is exactly what you give her.

She latches onto him and they are both confronted with the fact that they’re both terrible people actually, and somewhere in there, real feelings sprout and they have to struggle to navigate it

Pairing 2: Beautyshipping (Mai Valentine|Mai Kukaju/Aileen Rao)

Propaganda: love a good f/f rarepair and also two powerful ladies. aileen is a model who is so good at games that kaiba decides to make her a game master, and mai is introduced as being a powerful duelist who wins a lot. they could make each other worse. | i really like them both and like to see my faves together. and i like the idea of two women who are both very independent being in a relationship together because it could be done either as a sort of rivalry romance where they're both trying to one up each other OR it could be a very soft thing where after a long day having to do everything for themselves, they have someone safe to come home to who really gets them. really depends on where in each of their stories you have them meet, i think.

Gustavo: Definitely chuckles. I feel like he has a jolly, goofy laugh. Probably laughs at silly little things. Tries to make Peppino laugh a lot. Brick makes him laugh quite a bit. (Huh huh huh huh huh!)

Mr. Stick: Definitely has a nasally cartoony laugh like he has in game. Has a broken sense of humor. Probably laughs at the funnies or cheesy jokes. (Nyeh heh heh heh!)

Pepperman: LOUD and obnoxious. I really like the laugh the v/a did in temorinki's video. Like Mr. Stick, he has a terrible sense of humor. Really likes Garfield comics, thinks they're hilarious. (HAHAHAHAHA HA HA HA!!!!)

The Vigilante: Old man laugh, you can still hear his accent through it. He doesn't laugh much, he's a super serious guy. Imagine an older, slower, western Seth Rogan laugh. (Gyeh heh heh heh!)

The Noise: Has many laughs. His true, authentic laugh is a bit nasally and interrupted by sudden gasps for air (HAHA *inhale* HAHAHAHA *inhale*). He might snicker or laugh through his nose. He might even full blown cackle. (KAA HA HA HAA HAA HAAAAA).

Noisette: Also has a couple laughs. She giggles more and will snort if you make her laugh hard enough (she gets super embarrassed about it). She also has a loud cackle when she finds something hysterical. (Hehehehehe *snort* hehehe! or HAAAHAHAHAAAAHAAAAAAA!)

Fake Peppino: His laugh isn't much of a laugh and more of sounds. The sounds he makes while laughing are more similar to the noises he makes in game but shorter. (Hmm! Hmmmm! Hmmmm! or GHAHSGHEJSJSA!)

Pizzaface: His is basically just the in game, maybe a few different pitches up when something is REALLY funny.

Pizzahead: Giggles or cackles. Loves laughing at people's misfortune, thinks Peppino's misery is HILARIOUS. His laugh is basically the one he has in game. (HA HA HA HA HA! or Tee he he he he!)

Pillar John: DEEP and throaty laughter. Very jolly guy. His laugh is loud enough to cause an earthquake. Also has a very monkey-like laugh like the one he has in game. (GAHAHAHAHA!! or OHH HOO HOO HOO)

Gerome: Doesn't laugh much, but his laugh is kind of like John's; deep and jolly. He might give a small "heh..." here and there, but when he laughs, he laughs HARD. (GAAAAHAAAAAHAAAHAAAA!!!)

[Chinese Dramas]

My Journey to You - Wuxia. Spy games, badass ladies, subtextually homoerotic cousins. Gentle & sweet ML who melts the cold & calculated heart of FL assassin. Gorgeous setting and cinematography. Left me with a burning desire to see Zhang Ling He play more gentle babygirl MLs and Esther Yu to play more anti-heroes. Absolutely perfect to me.., if we just pretend the director didn't add a pointless cliffhanger in the last 5 min. Which is how I choose to live my life.

Story of Kunning Palace - 'rebirth' costume drama that I waited to air for like 2 years or something and then it... actually didn't disappoint? And was almost everything I wanted? 😳😲 This is THE couple for that post about the pair that need to be stuck in a neverending monogamous relationship with each other as a quarantine measure to protect everyone else.

A Journey to Love - wuxia perfection. The stand-out drama that I wasn't expecting. Murder mommy & murder daddy became an otp for the ages and all of the supporting characters were interesting and dynamic. I cared about so many more characters than I expected and never fast fowarded. Just immensely satisfying.

The Ingenious One - wuxia with a weak, scheming scholar protagonist on a revenge quest (yes, we've all heard that before!) who puts together a group to execute his cons, Leverage style. I love me a martial artist x weak scholar couple 👌. Some exciting twists & turns in this one. Both A Journey to Love and The Ingenious One are best enjoyed coming in with little to no information. Hell, skip the trailers and simply dive in!

Hidden Love - Modern drama. Top tier romance-novel-on-screen writing and acting. It felt honest and real. The coming of age arc for the FL was well done. Great brother & sister relationship that feels authentic. The ML's backstory was so heart breaking because it was never overplayed for melodramatics. Just a quiet pain, a distance and a burden he carried with him.

Road Home - Modern. "Do you remember who I am?" / "Yes. If I were to turn to ashes, I would still remember you." I am very weak for the "reunited exes", "second time around" trope when the actors are capable and the breakup wasn't a narratively convenient 'misunderstanding'. As a career woman who works very long hours, I also tend to appreciate modern drama relationships where the couple manages to stay functional & supportive while not having a lot of free time for each other. That's my version of wish fulfillment 😂. I felt like this narrative made me fully understand why they couldn't make a long distance relationship work as young adults but now they're ready and have experienced enough of the world to know that they are happier with their lives joined together than apart.

Love You Seven Times - xanxia. I wrote a whole review post (love letter) on this one, since it seems rather underrated. I feel like this one may actually end up one of my fav examples of the genre. I just sincerely bought into the couple and their mutual devotion.

The Last Immortal - xanxia. Terrible trailer but turns out to be a decent show. I'm a fan of the genre, so I'm enjoying it. (I think you do need to be, to enjoy it - it doesn't transcend or really subvert..just a solid representation of xanxia) I like both lead actors and they do a good job with the material. It's working better for me than Ancient Love Poetry and Ashes of Love. After being eager for Song of the Moon in 2022 but then being let down (I dropped that one quick), I'm very happy 2023 brought me 2 xanxia I liked.

Three Body - modern sci-fi. Book 1 of my fav sci-fi trilogy of recent years. As a novel fan first, I was pleased to see it on screen with talented actors. Eager for book 2.

Love Me, Love My Voice - modern drama with an unusual couple (2 introverts) and dubbing fandom hyper fixation. A laid back relaxation drama, to de-stress with. Minimal plot, no conflict. Just sweet slow burn relationship building, singing & audio performances. Supportive friendships.

Here We Meet Again - modern drama that suffered from sloppy editing. I mean almost incoherent editing in a couple places, like when they are counting down the days until getting married and then.. It's not mentioned again? 🙃 But I very much enjoyed the couple's chemistry. I can't say it was objectively good but it sure was compulsively watchable for some reason.

Royal Rumors - Costume drama that was so aggressively mediocre that I don't have any real explanation for not dropping it. Except I find the lead actress unspeakably alluring. Blame my hormones.

Back to the Brink - xanxia. Great concepts but the execution didn't work for me. I'm not a fan of slapstick and wacky humor within serious subject matter. (It's the reason kdramas can be very hit or miss with me.) The amount of humor layered into AJourney to Love is basically my limit for tragicomedies. (Note: I did go read the book and it was very entertaining - the tone was much more to my taste.)

My Lethal Man - modern. Embarassing english name, but they had me in the first half, not gonna lie. Then after her identity was exposed, I wasn't feeling it idk. Sometimes it's just not that complicated.

Destined/Chang Feng Du - costume drama. idk really why I dropped. I watched about a 3rd of it and then was distracted by other shiny objects. I plan to come back to this one in 2024 and finish.

Romance of the Twin Flower - costume drama; unholy abomination of a great novel. I hope somehow, someday, the culprits pay for their crime. Need I say more?

[Korean Dramas]

Perfect Revenge Marriage - a modern rebirth tale. For the 90% of it, I was high on the love of a drama that is just what you didn't know you wanted. The camp, the dedication, the scenery chewing, the glorious evil step mother. It was magical. And then the last 2 episodes I found underwhelming. I can't really explain it, the climax just didn't hit for me. But that's very much a personal taste issue and I'd definitely recommend to all drama lovers who enjoy the genre. Seriously, the performance of evil step mommy was a master class.

King the Land - modern workplace romance. I've heard complaints that there wasn't much of plot. But tbh that was fine with me, because some dramas are simply character pieces. This was all about the personal growth of the FL and ML. I ended up invested and rooting for the ML to become a decent guy who isn't a gross classist like his dad.

Destined with You - modern reincarnation drama. I blame my lingering kdrama good feelings about King the Land for convincing me to keep powering thru this one. Such a strong start but then half-way in I began to realize it simply wasn't going to go into the direction I wanted it to. I still have no idea what they intended to communicate with that love potion subplot.

Vincenzo - modern crime drama. I was late to the party on this one. But after I got around to watching the delightful Kinnporsche, this was rec'd to me as another drama that embraced the bigger than life unreality of Fantasy Mafia™ and provides a rollicking good time. Absolutely ridiculous and compulsively watchable. 10/10.

House of the Dragon - Awful people doing awful things to each other, as a 1st act before everything goes straight to hell. Plus freaky dragon-riding fantasy incest. What's there not to like?

Fall of the House of Usher (YES i DO watch every horror drama by Mike Flanagan thx) - Was it as good as the first 3..? No. Did I still breathlessly binge it in 2 days? Yes. Awful things happening to awful people, poetically. 👌 👌
