was thinking really really hard the other night about the windfalls. promise and volo are opposites in so many different ways it's sucking the normal juice out of me and i have to talk about this to someone other than my 4 twitter followers who don't give a fuck about voidpet characters. i get way too nervous to type paragraphs in the discord so instead of that i think i will spread it here... lots of words warning. i haven't gone over this for editing because i am tired. schade

there are a lot of little design pieces i want to talk about but to start off with some obvious comparisons... we have simple stuff like their personalities (volo being more closed off while promise lives on attention. introvert extrovert difference). but the first thing i thought of has to do with volo excelling physically versus promise with his immense mental strength... particularly on promise's capabilities, in the windfall family slideshow posted by linda on tiktok she actually does go over promise's lack of physical strength with points like. "will lose to a regular human in a fistfight" (hilarious) and "fights sitting down with his eyes closed" (less proving. maybe just there because it's fucking silly but i'm adding it here as reason anyways) promise is mentally powerful but weaker physically while on the contrary volo is noted to be physically powerful. they're like on opposite sides of the damage type thing. coin

this one is especially prominent in the stage descriptions but there's the way they push promise's villainy theme and emphasize his questionable morals far more than they do for any of the siblings while volo is like the only one out of the four windfall children who's doing something that's good for the world such as running a charity or becoming a surgeon... building off of this there's also the fact that it was specifically stated in the broadway video that volo is his favourite child while he is PERPETUALLY DISAPPOINTED IN HIS SON PROMISE!!! as broadway is a philanthropist i feel like he is probably quite proud of volo for helping society. similarly the whole villain thing promise has going on conflicts with broadway's superhero thing so yeah. "doubles down on greedy villain aesthetic to spite dad" congratulations it worked

then there's small shit like promise's eyes being Unbelievably Fucking Bright, even brighter than both pecunia and pandora's, in comparison to volo's which are the darkest throughout all of the siblings' stages, even without counting for the later changes in eye colour which literally turn the sclera black. truthfully this one was a bit of a stretch and i think arguments concerning eye colour fit a lot better in a different group of thoughts but i want to include it anyways because why are promise's eyes so fucking bright oh my god

more seriously though there's also how volo's passion lies with studying voidpets and a lot of what he does generally concerns helping other people while promise's focus thing is his own quest for power which is objectively way more selfish. amd then if u compare their stage 5 descriptions from garden you can look at promise and see how it's implied especially at that point that promise wanting to focus on self care and taking it easy, combined with the fact that he's always online, shows that by stage 5 he honestly isn't very productive anymore because he's already found his successes and feels like there's kind of nothing more he needs to do. so he doesn't do more. he's living comfortably with minimal further involvement in working... like it doesn't even tell us which branch of windfall inc. he leads when all the other siblings have one mentioned in their stage 5 description (volo nonprofit, pecunia finances, pandora is chair)

and speaking of the other windfall children if we go back to volo guess what the fuck he's doing in stage 5. he continues to be successful in fundraising! he runs the nonprofit of windfall inc.! and in his spare time what the fuck does he do? does he take time off like a normal person? relax like his brother promise? no he's a FUCKING SURGEON WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH HIM this guy does NOT take breaks. which is completely opposite promise who by the end of his stages seems like he's kind of doing Nothing. genuinely promise takes enough time off for the two of them combined

i feel like the most interesting comparison between the two has to do with their own kind of recovery... in one of linda's tiktoks she explains that in voidpet the heroes (freshmen) represent trauma and the villains (windfalls) represent healing. volo's healing is basically him not giving a fuck about what other people think of him and promise's healing is loving himself / taking care ofhimself. however promise doesn't have volo's in the way that he does give a fuck about what kind of attention he gets from other people he may actually give too much of a fuck... volo ends up learning not to care what other people think while his brother promise actually does care a lot about attention and the way he is perceived. unexpectedly i was thinking about this several days before any of the other points and i think it's really cool how promise's recovery, his intense love of himself, might end up fuelling an egotistical desire for attention... not cool in the way that it's necessarily a good thing for him but it. gives me thoughts. many thoufhts

🔵 He teases you very often. You'll do something slightly embarrassing, and he points it out with light-hearted chuckle. Blue loves to see you all flustered. Though, when you reverse his actions back toward him, he'll either blush bright red from it or laugh it off. Eventually, you'll just tease each other constantly and flirtingly. It is disgusting how sweet it is.

🔵 He's a minor kind of PDA guy. He doesn't need to be all over you, but it's nice to have you close and to know you're there. People watching you stroll about in Viridian City with his arm slung across your shoulders while he goes on about some of his latest research projects. His hand's warmth in sinks into your own as he pulls you to your seats on the magnet train. Your learned into his side as you sit on a bench in Johto's National Park.

🔵 His more private affections are much the same way, but he's much more passionate. Kisses are pressed to your lips that turn into make out sessions with him covering your neck in hickies. Blue has no shame about it and says you can do the same thing to him if it bothers you that much. He likes for you to sit in his lap while you watch television; his arms are wrapped around your waist and his head rests on your shoulder. He's glad to have you in his arms, and he'd do this any time.

🔵 Not aggressively jealous, but strangely competitive. If someone flirts with you, he's making comments about before showing them how he's clearly your boyfriend. It's a bit annoying when he starts saying weird things that are pokemon related to the whoever decided to flirt with you. Seriously, who starts bad-mouthing someone's team choice when they're attempting to pick up your partner?

🔵 He's always busy helping his grandfather with research and gym leader duties, yet he somehow finds the time to travel often. You get to go on trips with him around the world. He deems them romantic getaways, but they are mostly research related. Your trip to Kalos was because of reporting of a strange, unknown pokemon in an abandoned cave that hikers didn't even bother with. Still, he managed to sweep you off your feet by taking you to many restaurants and cafés. (You even met a man who screamed 'totally not evil' while he went on about a perfect world.) Alola was pleasant, but he was so busy with the Battle Tree, you were left alone for the most part.

🔵 He'd love if you were a trainer. You would be his training partner and a power couple. It's a dream come true. He totally brags about you to Red, who just kind of nods. (Internally, he makes a note to battle you.) If you're not, he doesn't mind, but you definitely have to have a pokemon of some sort. He'll give you one if you don't; it's a joy he wants to share. If you're interested in research like him too, he also loves that. (If you're both a powerful, whiz couple is something enviable.)

🔵 Sometimes, he acts like an older brother rather than a boyfriend. It's hilarious how he sometimes scolds you like a younger sibling when you do something dumb; he's the younger brother in his family! It's because he feels a bit protective over you. He loves you and wants to see you at your peak. This means he mimics what his older sister would for him during his younger years.

🔵 Occasionally, he'll go on about a random topic he's researching to you. It's all very in depth and very obviously something he plans to publish. Blue is looking for your praise in this situation and to search his knowledge with you. Please give him genuine criticism, he appreciates your compliments, but also needs to make sure it is unbiased and factual.

🔴 Quiet. He's so speaking adverse, in fact, it might be best you learn nonverbal communication if you don't already. Red can talk, but he just doesn't prefer to. Something in his brain just inhibits it most of the time, and he does feel bad about it. The few times he does talk is very pleasant. His voice is very soft and calming to listen to. Red only speaks when he feels comfortable or absolutely has to, so feel extremely special.

🔴 Not big on PDA, he's more comfortable enjoying your presence rather than clinging to you. It's a bit lonely, certainly, but you'll know he's there for you. You're allowed to cling to him, actually. He never initiated, yet doesn't mind, so long as you also give him his personal space.

🔴 In private, he's much the same yet more loose. You'll find random hugs from behind are quite common, along with kisses to your temple. It's all very gentle and soft. There are a few times when he just buries his face into your chest while you're laying down together. He's a bit overwhelmed and wants you to hold him for a while. Stroke his hair, blab on about something you learned, talk about the weather; just he there for him.

🔴 It is next to impossible to make him jealous. He trusts you wholeheartedly and knows how much you love and care for him. It takes someone, usually a close friend, taking up all of your time and leaving him lonely to finally feel the harsh strings of envy. You'll notice he's somehow even more quiet while refusing to give you any mind. Reassure him that they're just a friend and that you don't get jealous when he spends large amounts of time with Blue or Leaf. Red then feels bad for getting so wound up.

🔴 He's a professional, celebrity trainer. You're at any tournament he competes in. Cheer loudly for him, and you'll catch a rare, bright smile from him. Your support means many things to him. You'll also travel a lot with him and see many different sights. He's often exhausted from battles, so try to do everything before his tournaments. (You're still not forgiving him for abandoning you in Alola for Blue.)

🔴 He would be enthused if you were a trainer, but really doesn't need that in a relationship. Red would like someone outside of his career choice as a partner. Do you participate in contests? He's interested to hear all about how those work. Are you a breeder? Red used to do some himself, tell him about it. Are you a movie star from Unova? He will watch your films. If you are a trainer, however, please don't use him for practice constantly. He's your boyfriend first.

🔴 His pokemon love you. You cannot leave the house without his Pikachu attempting to sneak out with you. Espeon sits on you and purrs all afternoon. Snorlax loves for you to nap on him. Charizard is your personal escort and bodyguard. Red thinks it's adorable that his team is so infatuated with you. (His namesake is spread across his cheeks after he watches you press a kiss to Venusaur's head.)

🔴 Even if you aren't a trainer, he wants to do Multi battles with you. He will carry you; he just wants the strange intimacy present in being battle partners. Supposedly, you have to be in sync to be good partners for them. Red feels like he is in rhythm with you throughout his day-to-day life. His time at home is bright and calming with you at his side, you're patient with his selective mutism, and you don't mind the comments his rabid fans make toward you. A smile breaks across his face as demolishes the poor trainer couple you were battling. Yes, his synchrony lies in you.

Okay okay okay, I've got Thoughts(TM) about Hollow Mind and I'm just gonna list them as briefly as possible here. I might elaborate on a few of them later, though. (I also don't feel like grabbing screencaps so sorry in advance for the wall of text)

I believe that Wittebro was the human who once lived in Bonesborough (with his witch wife who may or may not have had the surname Clawthorne) that Gwen mentioned in Keeping Up A-fear-ances. I'm not sure where to place Philip in all that but judging by the progression through the mind paintings it seems that he'd been dabbling in some bad magic even while his brother was still alive.

Belos claims he's a witch hunter. I have several thoughts regarding this:

My theory is that the Wittebane brothers come from a family of witch hunters and that their father was the original founder of Gravesfield. The reason I think this is because we briefly see a third statue in Yesterday's Lie, other than the brothers, of a man in a tricorn hat and tall boots.

It's interesting how Belos continues to fight witchcraft after all this time whereas his brother seems to have taken to it very quickly. I mean, he seemed content enough to settle in the Boiling Isles, marry a witch, and have a child with her.

I have a feeling that Philip didn't intend to kill his brother, but his brother's wife, in order to free him from her witchy wiles or some bullshit. Obviously, it went south, Wittebro defended his wife, and he got stabbed in the process.

I'm almost positive Jacob, the witch-obsessed museum curator from Yesterday's Lie, is distantly related to Belos and for some reason I find that idea hilarious.

I wasn't expecting them to lean quite so heavily into religous zealot territory with Belos but his early stunts to rope witches into his grand scheme is uncomfortably similar to cult recruitment strategies.

"Look at what wild magic has done to your city! Now imagine what it's doing to you. A city can rise from the ashes, but a soul...I can make your magic pure again, as the Titan intended!" UGH UGH UGH DON'T LIKE THAT

Also reminds me of those rich televangelists who prey on people's beliefs for a quick buck UGH

I also wasn't expecting them to go all into the witch genocide route but Belos is straight up planning to kill all of the witches in the Boiling Isles with the Draining Spell.

I want to love the Collector because they've got such an fun design and personality, but the first thing they reminded me of was Jevil from Deltarune and I hate that bastard with a passion (I have yet to defeat him because that fight always gives me a headache 😓)

That being said, they've really got Bill Cipher vibes in a chaotic-trickster-demon-with-malicious-intent kind of way, waiting for a specific event for them to finally be freed and restored to power. They're even similar down to their two-dimensional, abstract designs!

Also, when you think about it, isn't Gravity Falls a portal to a demon realm, of sorts, where weirdness seems to leak through in excess?

I'm very intrigued by the "nine bright hues" comment that we hear from both Belos and the Collector. The colors represent the nine main covens, the nine schools of magic, a rainbow of colors. This reminds me of Steven Universe discussions about White Diamond, how all gems likely originate with her, how white light splits into a multitude of colors when refracted through a prism...Luz means "light," light was the first glyph she learned, it was the one glyph that still eluded Philip...interesting stuff, very interesting.

It was clever of Raine to hide the transportation spell in the flowers because of course Hooty's a sucker for romance, but you know Raine was just trying to flirt with Eda. And maybe also apologize for having a part in this mess in the first place.

Just imagine Eda flipping over the card with the instructions for the spell on it, and it says "P.S. sorry for accidentally traumatizing your kid xoxo"

Also, I really, really hope that Raine and co. stuck around to make sure Eda did the spell correctly. Maybe they intercepted Hunter and took him somewhere safe? One can only hope.

1. what song makes you feel better?

Right now, it's probably Musician by Porter Robinson. It's really catchy, so it gets me really hyped and it's inspiring as well *sobs*

2. what’s your feel-good movie?

I admit I struggled with this for a bit. I really had to ask myself "What's the one movie that I go back to when I feel bad?" and at this point, I can narrow it down to two. Deadpool and Detective Pikachu. They're both hilarious, Deadpool is my favourite "hero" and Detective Pikachu was the last movie I ever saw in cinemas before the pandemic, so it's always going to have a special place in my heart because of that.

3. what’s your favorite candle scent?

Definitely vanilla. It just reminds me of the days when me and my mum will have a baking day. Reminds me of home. And cake.

4. what flower would you like to be given?

This is another tricky one, because I've never really been given flowers so I haven't had to think about it before. I really like forget-me-nots but they're really small. But when they spread everywhere it just looks gorgeous.

5. who do you feel most you around?

I probably feel the most me around my friend irl, T. I'm constantly having to keep a filter on what I saw, whether it's because of work or because I accidentally insult someone due to my autism. But T doesn't care about that, she encourages me to let the filter down and just be myself :)

I hate having to skip questions, but I physically cannot bring myself to do this. It's just not in me to be kind to myself.

Yellow. It's a nice bright and happy colour.

as stated before i have absolutely no idea of how physics is, much less of being a physics major. so like,,,,,,, all theories are ambiguous. they don’t exist other than that word. what are they talking about? the one who asked knows not more than the asker.

would absolutely, and constantly tease you for anything and everything. you could be talking about the inner workings of geophysics with sasuke and you’d hear the faint sound of wiggling eyebrows and metaphorical saxophone playing.

but of course, this won’t stop shingen from trying to win you over.

he does it his own style, the classical flirting with his sexy stature. yet, you always quip back in the jargon language he knows nothing about—and his several seconds of confoundment proves to be a good strategy as you flee the scene.

prior to you telling him that you were from the future, he did find it suspicious how you have so, so many “things that came from your hometown” that was painfully specific. and he’s shingen takeda, he’s known for being well-informed, so why hadn’t he heard of this before? some villages have their own tradition, yes, but it’s usually not enough to write at least twenty dictionaries about.

and even if he wants to find it, where would he go? the only two people who’ve learnt it are you and sasuke.

although he begins to pick up basic things whenever you talk to either him or the ninja. just small references that a high schooler can pick up.

for the sake of it, shingen’d probably try to do a physics pick-up line on you. but due to the lack of knowledge he has, it ends up with you on the floor laughing until you’re clenching your sides.

you can’t help it! it’s so wrong on so many levels it’s insanely hilarious while also painful.

after the laughter dies down, shingen takes it upon himself and pins you to the wall, his sultry eyes burning into yours, “well, it seems my goddess can do a bit of fixing on those, hm? please, my muse, do demonstrate how you do it properly.”

(honorable mention hc: if you ever use terminology before the affectionate part of him comes in he’ll practically frown at you in deep confusion, “what are you talking about, you fool?”)

if his ninja had met you before he did, he probably wouldn’t have much of a problem. sasuke talks to someone, all he does is frown and just doesn’t care. but hoo boy you managed to slither into his heart without him even noticing it.

he’s just looking around the market for you, until he sees the sight of you chattering so brightly and passionately,,, with sasuke.

phase one: pouty mode. it lasts only for a few second, but his lips form a very strong scowl as it processes in his mind.

(phase one and a half: it’s where he glances at you and notice how you twinkle so brightly in his eyes—like a star beaming at him. except it isn’t at him. and so this honorary phase ends)

phase two: in a split second of his braincells barely managing together, he unsheathes his sword and begins to fish sasuke away from you. (”let’s duel, sasuke.”  /  “i’m afraid i was having a conversation with—”  /  “fight or i kill you this second.”)

phase three: usually it’s where you pull him away and lightly scold him, thus ending his bloodlust.

phase four: usually happens after the other party has left. pouty mode two: electric boogaloo; as he sulks like a child in envy and jealousy and you’re forced to cuddle with him and give him lots of kisses so he Functions properl after that.

of course, you can’t just let it repeat. you had a talk after some time, entailing that, kenshin, please stop chasing your vassals because they say one (1) word to me. with a lot of grumbling and reluctance, he agrees to it.

it won’t stop his lips forming into a scowl at the sight of it though.

he curses the oldened knowledge of the sengoku—he wanted you to talk to him about those big brained things. but alas, there wasn’t much he could do.

(”no, kenshin, you can’t go to the future just cause you wanna learn everything i learnt! the wormhole is gone and it takes at least 4 years—”)

—yukimura:

yukimura meets you the second time while talking to sasuke down in the market. and the decision to rebrand you from a wild boar to a witch casting spells were made in the flick of a second, just like that.

“hey, are you trying to hex my fried, enchantress?!”  /  “yukimura, they’re a friend from my hometown, it’s alright.”  /  “oh.”

as he says, a friend of sasuke is a friend of his! though he still doesn’t understand at all each time you make a physics reference, and still isn’t partly convinced you at least know an ancient language.

he doesn’t exactly buy into the whole ‘hometown-specific’ thing either, but hey. it’s sasuke and you, if you’re lying, he thinks, he’ll let you tell him in your own time.

but in the meantime, the fact you know terminology to references he doesn’t understand makes your daily bickering a lot funnier. what’s an atom and is his brain really smaller than that as you said? fun thing is he’ll probably never know if you and sasuke withhold such information.

if he ever sees you experimenting with something to examine the components, as long as it isn’t dangerous, he’d look at you in mild amusement and confusion, “what are you doing, silly?”

but if it dangerous (like guns, fireworks, etc.) he scolds you with a scowl, one born from pure worry.

once you two got together, you started going to dorky science puns. once again, yukimura doesn’t understand it, but the stupid grin you have on your face is just enough for him.

(he does ask sasuke about it later, resulting in a bright faced yuki, muttering a small “idiot,,” under his breath.)

—sasuke:

the moment you saw him at honno-ji, present day, you felt there was something familiar to him. like it’s a face you’ve passed through in the bustling streets. and the moment you saw his lab coat, you just assumed he somewhat came from the same college as you.

and just after he corrected you referring to him as “that college student” being an astrophysicist, your eyes brightened a thousand times, but tried to stifle it considering you were more or less being chased. 

you listened into his explanation of the wormhole closely, processing each word in fascination and curiosity. you had enough experience to know what he’s talking about—and it gave you so much euphoria from just simply listening in.

you hope to meet him again as he disappears in the shadows.

you do, to your delight. the very first day you went out to town, you encountered him at a stall. conversation immediately took off once you re-mentioned his degree, along with yours. from there, the wormhole was the center topic again, mostly talking about how he found where it would be and when it would be. you’d never heard of such a research back then.

and slowly, you grow an admiration to sasuke’s high intelligence. all the research he’s done, he’ll definitely show a fellow enthusiast, and you’re practically beaming at the chance.

so much so that you don’t notice the weirdened stares of the ones around you.

there nights when you’d sneak into his room just to ask him about something, or propose to him a theory since he’s the only person who’d get it.

and on some sleepless nights, you find yourself lying about with sasuke beneath the stars, peering into his telescope once in a while and geeking out about the small dots in the sky.

a part of you wished you met him sooner—but you feel like you couldn’t ever ask for more.

truth be told, he didn’t care much at first.

his somewhat apathy towards people and more towards art becomes just ever so slightly apparent; as he lets you rant your heart out to sasuke while he admires some cloth in the background. you have your preferred friends, it isn’t his place to be opposed to it.

well, that’s what he thought of it—until you slowly got closer to him.

through talks of art and the different medias from your “hometown”, he learnt more and more about you. and his heart grew fonder and fonder.

until—for whatever reason—he found himself,,, feeling some kind of upset by the sight of you talking to sasuke so brightly like that? it’s like a part of him doesn’t sit well with it.

while he isn’t quite sure what he’s feeling, he’ll try to fish you away regardless. his good looks aren’t for nothing, even still having its charming effects on you.

putting up somewhat of an airheaded act, he mindlessly pulls you out of the conversation to look at some beautiful fabric, catching you off-guard for a moment. if you try to mention your talk with sasuke, it’s as if he doesn’t hear it as he whisks you off to another store. and another, another—until you’ve gotten some distance from the ninja.

even with all that effort, he doesn’t think much into the feeling inside his heart. what then felt like a storm, was now a welcoming, warm spring breeze in him.

he’ll figure it out, one day.
