I'm re-reading the Discworld series for reasons, and honestly the most relatable part of reading these as an adult is how many of the protagonists start out being tired, used to their little routine and vaguely disgruntled by the interruption of the Plot. Sam Vimes wants to lie drunk in a gutter and absolutely doesn't want to be arresting dragons. Rincewind is yanked into every situation he's ever encountered, though he'd much rather be lying in a gutter too. (Minus the alcohol. Plus regretting everything he's ever done said witnessed or even heard about fourth-hand in his whole life.) Granny Weatherwax is deeply suspicious of foreign parts and that includes the next town over; Nanny has leaned into the armor of "nothing ever happens to jolly grannies who terrorize their daughters-in-law and make Saucy Jokes"

Only the young people don't seem to have picked up on this---and that's fortunate, because someone has to run around making things happen, if only so Vimes and Granny and Rincewind have a reason to get up (complaining bitterly the whole time) and put it all to rights. Without Carrot, Margrat, Eric, etc. these characters don't have that reason; they're likely to stay in the metaphorical gutter and keep wondering where it all went wrong or why anything has to change.

............well, that's not quite true. You get the sense that Vetinari knows how much certain people hate the Plot. And as the person sitting behind the metaphorical lighting board of Ankh-Morpork, he takes no small pleasure in forcing the Plot-haters specifically to stand up, and say some lines.

I've been thinking about the different couple combinations between the four of them...

There's something so tender with a hint of yearning in Tom + Luke couples and would-be couples. E.g. Ditch, AngelJohn, DIWives, Pablo + Cheryl, the tailor/incest couple, the dad and his partner in the "Gay dad" timewarp

Sam + Luke I'd say are intense and emotional. E.g. Samantha + Egbert, Bubbamiah, David + Jemima (Milkman), Anna + Esmeralda, the kids at prom, the Oompa Loompa couple

Sam + Tom are fierce and passionate. E.g. Stephen + David (Huge Genre), the bus-stop ladies (Jingle Boys Genre), Amanda + Tarquin, the Lafayettes, Persephone + Geoff, the couple in the "Friends with Benefits" genre, Angus + his "friend" (The Hobnob Affair)

Luke + AJ I think focus less on the romantic moments like the others do, but importantly, they do the most iconic dipped embrace kisses. E.g. Sarah + Jean-Luc, Clarissa + Mark. (I think they're also parents often, e.g. in Beetroots & Murder, Neighbour's Under the Bed, The Milkman)

Sam + AJ are good at playful couples. E.g. The Excited Chinchilla couple, The Ingredients couple, the Divorce TimeWarp, The Hare Who Wore a Sweater couple, Mr + Mrs Claus

Tom + AJ I think give off a similar casual vibe in longforms, e.g. the Oopsie Daisy Bulge couple, Mary + Johnson from Murders in Space, Cheevo + Stewie. But they can be very suggestive in shorter games and scenes, e.g. the couple in the garden centre, the couple where AJ becomes chair-man, the couple who met at the German bar, the couple in the pub where AJ jumps onto Tom and Tom complains about Daisy

An au where Elphaba has Galinda and Fiyero trying to "woo" her and she has no idea how she got here!!! Galinda and Fiyero are bestfriends and almost everyone thought they would end up together, but are instead treated with the chaos of both trying to impress Elphaba, the school outcast, as they're both ignored, initially. Its Galinda and Fiyero, so ofcourse they're dramatic and very public about it, Elphaba hates it...

what if JGY and SJ swapped their men?

i mean, LXC with his pristine reputation could actually make for a pretty good defender for the victim of an intentional smear campaign as long as LXC himself is willing to defend the man. and i kinda feel that LXC wouldn't be all that appalled by SJ's crimes? he had sympathetic reasons for the qiu family massacre and running away with WYZ and he didn't - as far as we know - kill anyone after joining the sect. we'll have to assume, of course, that in this scenario he's willing to actually talk and explain himself instead of being the world's most uncooperative defendant.

(some of y'all may ask, "what about his abuse of LBH, the one crime he actually committed with no sympathetic reason behind it?". and i'll say, what about it? let's be real here, no one in that setting including LXC would send a respectable sect master to jail over accusations of child abuse alone.)

and as for JGY. well. what JGY needs is a man with a huge ass sword who'll hear out the accusations against him and will, without a hint of hesitation, say that he doesn't actually care and he's taking his shidi back to his sect right this instance, thank you.

and like YQY would do it even if he believed JGY to be a cold-hearted murderer, but given that JGY is much more open to the idea of defending himself, YQY wouldn't even have to silently suffer in doubt! thank you for clearly explaining your actions and motivation behind them, i'm so glad i know exactly what you did and didn't do, and why you had to kill the people you killed! i'm so happy you can actually talk and explain yourself to me. i would've defended you regardless, but it's nice not to feel like i'm betraying my own conscience by staying at your side.

day 5 at the job. i redid their whole paperwork organisational system to make it easier to learn and to follow. with their permission and encouragement.

(because when i was being trained i found it hard to remember what file went where so i reimagined a system that made sense instead of having to learn all of that.)
