My Top 10 Favourite Magical Girl Designs: Magia Record
Gosh this was hard- I love almost every character, so I had to try not to let that interfere with my picks. Also, I decided not to include characters from the original series, or characters from their own respective spinoff manga.
These aren’t in any particular order, just choosing these was hard enough!
Kanoko Yayoi:
Tumblr media
In addition to being my favourite side character, Kanoko has one of my favourite designs. She’s got this enthusiasm in her expression and her fluffy bob reflects her personality in my opinion. The outfit is simple, with enough elegant flair to reflect her dream of designing fashion, but it doesn’t get in the way of a fight. The hat is adorable, and my favourite part is the sewing needle sword!
Manaka Kurumi:
Tumblr media
Where do I even start? Manaka’s design is just brimming with personality! She’s always emitting confidence, obviously ready to take on the world, and I can take her completely seriously in spite of her ":3″ mouth. Her magical girl outfit is bright, colourful, both whimsical and cheflike, and instantly recognisable. Her soul gem is a CARROT, AND SHE WHACKS FAMILIARS WITH A MAGICAL SKILLET, HOW GREAT IS THAT??
Mitama Yakumo:
Tumblr media
I know Mitama is a super devisive character. But I adore her design. She looks simultaneously professional, welcoming, and mysterious. Perfect for her role as the secretive, neutral coordinator. Her outfit reminds me of a magician, or maybe a magician’s assistant. It’s classy, but it’s not out of the question that you might see it on a stage. She always looks and sounds very affable, effectively acting as a mask. I STILL don’t know how to feel about her, but I feel like that’s a good thing when considering she’s meant to be somewhat enigmatic.
Rena Minami:
Tumblr media
Honestly, she has my favourite design among the secondary mains. Her unique hairstyle is different, but not absurd, and she manages to avoid being obviously tsundere based solely on appearance (Is it just me, or is it often really easy to spot who the tsundere girl is in anime before she even speaks?). Her dress is so cute and just the right level of classy, and the colours and stripes mix well and don’t make the outfit too busy. And I love that her weapon looks like a callback to more lighthearted magical girl series.
Masara Kagami:
Tumblr media
Masara was another character I almost immediately latched on to when I drew her in the fate weave. She doesn’t have a whole lot of regard for herself, but her magical girl outfit is gorgeous, almost ethereal. Over-exposed chest aside- (no sweetie you’ll catch a cold :( ), I LOVE how her look contrasts with her personality and fighting style. Just looking at her design, you wouldn’t guess offhand that she uses all out offence and doesn’t care if she’s injured or killed. At the very least, I didn’t.
Tsukuyo/Tsukasa Amane:
Tumblr media
I know, I’m cheating just a little bit here. But I have to include both of them in the same slot. As identical twin characters, they’re well designed, and look different enough that you can tell them apart at a glance, but definitely identical without question. I like the subtle difference in the shape of their eyes as well, and that their fringes, while similar, aren’t just the same hair mirrored. Their kimono-esque dresses are also similar, but each one properly reflect their respective wearer’s personality. For instance, Tsukuyo has a loin flap (I’m so sorry I don’t know the right term), prefering to use her flute from a distance. But Tsukasa has nothing to get in the way when she runs to smack someone or something with her weapon.
Yachiyo Nanami:
Tumblr media
Hands down, my favourite design of the Mikazuki Villa family. Poised, graceful, decisive, and clearly experienced by the way she carries herself; she holds her cards very close to her chest. Transformed, she looks like a warrior queen or priestess. The look of her dress reminds me of stars reflected on the ocean, especially with how fluidly it’s always drawn. The armour isn’t overdone or underdone, and her headdress is unique and striking, I could gush about the character design on her all day. But since she’s a main character, I can imagine everyone’s already said everything there is to say about her, so... I’ll back off :’)
Mito Aino:
Tumblr media
What a precious child! She’s got that ‘head in the clouds’ look, but isn’t incapable of being serious. The four leaf clovers incorporated into her design are a nice touch considering she was frantically looking for one before becoming contracted. Her ‘forest archer’ design is both cute and functional, and, this might be my love of pokemon talking, but she high key reminds me of Rowlett’s evolution line.
Holy Alina:
Tumblr media
Now, I have a lot of beef with Alina as a character. But her Holy Alina design is just perfect to me. It’s beautiful but macabre and a bit creepy with the skull on her head, and the masks on her skirt and hovering around her. You can even see the ribs of the fur god in the cape hanging behind her! But it’s also got her signature colourful touches, and the stars on the inner side of the headdress add a mystical kind of feel. But then you see her smug, crazy smile in the middle of all that-                    Anyway, 10/10 design.
Ayame Mikuri:
Tumblr media
The Azalea Trio’s matching designs are a delight, but among them, Ayame’s really stands out to me. Her jacket cloak thing is white instead of black, and the skirt isn’t as fluffy which suits her hyperactive nature. And then you have the eyepatch that she doesn’t even need, and the bunny on her tights and pompoms dangling from the vest. It feels like she went in on the base outfit and customised it herself, which I think is pretty in line with her character and also adorable :)

A Dynamic Take on Festive Dressing //  Ft. Angasutra
Lovely people! As the festive season sets in on India, everyone is looking for unique outfits that can set their festival look apart from others. Festive clothing usually means bright hues, lots of embroidery, thread work, and complementing accessories to complete each look. Everyone wants to look their best, and why not?! Since October and November are all about festivals, and they’re back-to-back, let me give you a few names to look out for when you are doing your festive shopping or research.
I have collaborated with the multi-designer store, Angasutra, which offers creations by more than 30 unique designers. The designers I’m featuring here, in association with Angasutra, are:
Matsya
Dolly J
Anushree Reddy
These looks that I’ve styled are glamour-infused looks! We are all rushing around at festival time for the perfect “Diwali party” outfit, or the perfect “informal fusion event” outfit, so here is some inspiration. I’m keeping in mind the Fall/Winter’17 hues, regal-looking, deeper shades, with a lot of embellishment.
It was a complete princess moment when I styled these 3 outfits, truly. But hold up… I will be biased here and say that the Matsya outfit made me feel like I belong to some far, far away land, where only princesses dwell, embellished in all the best luxury accessories. As you may notice, I toned down my accessories and went very subtle with my makeup and hair.
Matsya’s story is one of love, fusing art & fashion with poetic magic. The brand aims not to create intimidation, but to flourish in warmth.  Get ready to become modern royalty. Every garment is personalised and you feel like you are taking home a piece of creativity that was customised only for you, specially. The garment was heavily embroidered with white & gold  embellishment. The outfit is a two piece outfit, with a jacket plus the beautiful plain weave mermaid style skirt.
Dolly J is a luxury brand known for its minimalism when it comes to creating an outfit like a lehenga or an anarkali, or even an evening gown. The uniqueness in her approach lies in the way she builds style on top of solid roots, using superb craftsmanship and design.
This midnight blue gown was so breathtaking to wear. It had a pastel ‘peace’ pink dupatta complementing it and the most gorgeous floral embroidery work with deep-shaded florals intertwined throughout the outfit, on the bottom. The sleeves were made of sequins and net.
It was a pleasure going a little off the edge and styling these oh-so-glamorous outfits. Dolly J has always been my favourite to associate with for weddings or festive seasons.
The last outfit I styled obviously had to be from a Hyderabadi designer! Anushree Reddy to the platform! Her designs speak volumes and are quintessential floral and very grandiose. She has always used pastel hues and floral embroidery, with a lot of stone and gold embellishment work. This particular outfit from her collection perfectly suited me. I wore this deep maroon- red lehenga with this pastel pink and green and gold off the shoulder blouse. It was the perfect combination for an Indo-Fusion look. Leaving it simple, without any complicated hairdo or accessories, I wanted to embrace the outfit, and bring it to light (quite literally, as seen in the pictures). The raw silk lehenga was made for someone like me, who loves dressing up, yet wants to keep it simple. I love the cross off the shoulder blouse, it gives the outfit a very modern yet festive look.
So, folks, to sum it all up- Angasutra has your back! Go to them for your festive and wedding needs.
It was a pleasure working on this festive editorial. I shot with the SUPER TALENTED THARIQ HUSSAIN. It was our first time associating together. I knew I only wanted to collaborate with him on a project that challenged the both of us and as you can see, we’ve come up with some magnificent shots in keeping with the theme.
It is always a pleasure working with Angasutra on our monthly editorials. They always push the best creativity out of me, and they’re a great team to work with.
