Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:

*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.

Robin!Jason, who constantly references different books at random times by quoting them and joking about characters, except Bruce doesn't have much time to read everything that Jason goes through. Of course, he understands some nods towards classics, but Jason is an avid reader, so it is hard to keep up with him sometimes. Jason tries to drag him to watch some movie adaptations, but he falls asleep in the very beginning of it.

And then Jason dies.

Bruce goes through all his library obsessively to the point he remembers the page of every little bookmark Jason left, and he knows his little notes on the margins by the heart. He watches movie adaptations, too, even though Jason only ever watched it to hate on them. He finds new books, books he thinks Jason would like if he was alive, and reads them, imagining what kind of analysis would Jason finalise by the end of it; his opinion not always matches with Jason's, but that doesn't matter. Bruce just likes to imagine.

Years pass, and Jason returns to Gotham. Not as a boy Bruce missed so much. Or, at least, he thinks so.

But then Jason does some bitter, irritated reference, comparing them to characters of one of the books he had on his shelf, and Bruce catches himself thinking... well, they still think similarly, but the conclusion they drew had always differed from each other. It is a different situation, of course, but... but maybe he could try to make this work.

Because, if anything, Bruce is tired of imagining. Especially, not when he finally has a chance to get everything back.

On the next day after their fight, someone sends Jason a copy of a new book from his favourite author - the one that he still hadn't read - his old set of colourful bookmarks, and a little note.

Bruce gets the book back in a week, full of frantic notes, a bunch of bookmarks, and a short note explaining what each colour means (a mystery he didn't resolve years ago, after he passed away).

And, oh, God. He completely forgot how fast Jason read sometimes.

wanted to find some mushroom stock to try a noodle thing that an aunt had made for supper~~~ it was just fried onion, fried mushrooms, mushroom gravy, and maybe meat too if you eat it~~ atop egg noodles~~~ kind of makes me think of Swedish meatballs but probably not exactly~~~ unless you add sour cream or something else~~

sounds good, right? and it's simple~~~ might help with he food rut my sibling and I are stuck in~~ yay~~

go to store and get stuff cause general shopping trip, spend a lot on stocking up on frozen veggies... looked at mushroom gravy packets so I don't have to make it myself, aaaaaaand....

they're not vegetarian..... you'd think mushroom gravy would be vegetarian right? wrong~~!

it's got beef broth in it~~~ both the packet you add water to, and the Campbells canned gravy, or at least the "golden mushroom gravy" variant had beef stock in it... and it was the first ingredient no less....

reading ingredient lists is super fun for me /s, cause I'm visually impaired and it's hard to do~~~ so this makes that extra annoying...

had I plugged the Soosee app yet? you can pay for use for a lifetime w the equivalent of $15 or if you're on android, same kind of deal with ingredian pro. I'd say that one might be better tho cause you can set it up with a whole bunch of different diets, one's IOS exclusive, the other is android exclusive. so if you need to stay away from stuff for dietary reasons, they'll help~~ and they're both good~~~

When my endo was absolutely taking me out pain-wise, I did all the right things to not get fired for absences. This involved filling out paperwork with my doctor that explained that YES I have a pain condition and YES it stops me from working and YES I need to be able to use more than my alotted PTO to cover it all.

I was literally walking around the company like Professor Farnsworth because standing up straight hurt too much, and I was STILL shamed for needing to take time off.

Did I miss deadlines?

No.

Did I request extensions?

No.

I literally met every expectation they asked of me with the only thing I asked is that I could call in and say, "I can't fucking make it". All they had to do was go, "Yup, okay, you've still got plenty of non-paid days to use for that. See you when we see you."

By chance, I worked with a truly excellent manager who understood fully how much effort it took for me to show up. She knew I hit my deadlines. She made sure other people knew this. But it also came down to me just texting her, "I can't get out of bed today."

And she'd send back. "Okay. But I need you the rest of the week."

Translation= "I know you can take care of your work, but people are starting to say you're untrustworthy because they don't see you."

I finally got approved for a hysterectomy. Two days before my surgery--which HR knew about because I'd filled out all the paperwork to take six weeks off that were supposed to protect me from getting fired from absenteeism, I got a call from HR.

I think my message was, "Hey, it's me. I go on leave in two days for that surgery I warned you about, and now HR is telling me they don't think they'll have work for me when I get back."

Guess who came back for six months, hated every second of it, but got that fucking money. .

When they finally fired me, I couldn't claim anything concrete. Yeah, I knew there was plenty of work I could be doing, but I also knew I couldn't prove they were holding it from me because they wanted me to quit.

It took me 18 months to find a new job. Honestly, looking back, I can't imagine I was worth a damn in an interview for the first year. I know all my words sounded like they need for an interview, but I'm sure my tone was "those fuckers" and I was still recovering from a level of daily pain that should have (this is not a joke) made me pass out according to the pain scale.

I am a loud and fierce advocate for my co-workers to not only work 40 hours and only 40 hours, but also to shut off notifications at lunch and breaks and work whatever schedule gets them their 40 in the least painful way possible.

Will I be on a 5:01 PM when you finally feel pain-free enough to think clearly about the email I sent at 8:01 AM? Fucking nope. I'm done at fucking five. If I've got more questions, I'll ask and wait. You take care of you.

The H5N1 (bird flu) virus is going around, and cats are proving especially susceptible to it. A big cat sanctuary in Washington state had TWENTY of their big cats (cougars, tigers, etc) die of bird flu.

There have also been cases of indoor-only domestic cats getting sick or even dying of bird flu after contracting it from raw cat food. And of course coming into contact with birds also puts your cat at risk.

To keep your cat safe:

Keep them away from birds, preferably keeping them entirely inside. If they are indoor-outdoor then remove any bird feeders from your yard to make cat-bird contact less likely.

Do NOT feed them raw food of any sort, including freeze-dried raw food. Freezing will not kill the virus!

A lot of raw pet food companies are using PR speak to assure customers that their raw food is safe. Remember that at the end of the day their priority is to make money and stay in business. Unless they are testing every bird carcass for the virus their assurances are meaningless, and they certainly are not testing every bird because it would be too expensive.

Cooking kills most viruses and bacteria, including H5N1.
