Top 20 Best Movies of the Decade (2010′s)
Now that we have entered the 2020s, it’s time to look back on a decade of movie magic. To emphasise the importance of each year, I’ll balance things out by including two films from each year for my Top 20 list. I’ve tried to pick films that both defined this decade as well as appealed to me personally, so my list will of course, as always, be different from yours, but hopefully, I won’t totally irritate you with my humble choice, which I deem worthy to post online for the public eye to witness.
2010:
INCEPTION - “You’re waiting for a train...” Christopher Nolan unarguably is the most exciting and original directors working today. Each time he releases a movie, its an event. A literal must-see at the cinema. Which is why this isn’t the only film of his you will find on this list. With Inception, Nolan gives us a movie that is both enjoyable and imaginative, rewarding the audience for the attention that it demands. Filled with so much detail that if you miss certain shots, you will completely get lost in confusion of the narrative (as confusing as it already is). It’s intense and complex, with great performances from the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, this movie will leave you lingering for more even after that mysterious ending.
SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD - “You cocky cock! You'll pay for your crimes against humanity!” Once again, another exciting director on this list (oh there are so so many!). Ever since Edgar Wright emerged from the British isles, he’s given us some of the funniest films of the past decade and onwards. His Cornetto Trilogy is a blast, Baby Driver is a blast, Ant-Man was going to be even more of a blast if Marvel allowed Wright to do his magical shenanigans his way, and the upcoming Last Night in Soho will surely be a blast also. With Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Wright creates a meta-clever universe taking inspiration from comic books and video games and filled to the brink with wink-wink-nudge-nudge humour, this is an exciting and very sarcastic over the top endeavor. Also, Brie Larson in this movie.....phew!! And unsurprisingly, its all a blast!
2011:
DRIVE - “I just wanted you to know, just getting to be around you, that was the best thing that ever happened to me.” Drive is more of an elegant exercise in style, and its emotions may be hidden but they run deep. A shamelessly disreputable, stylish, stoic, ultra-violent thriller with amazing stunt work, one of the best opening sequences of any movie this decade and a neon-pumped soundtrack that’s a must-own for all vinyl users, if you still haven’t seen Drive, there’s only one thing you can do. Clue: it’s to go watch Drive.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL - “Your mission, should you choose to accept it...” Tom Cruise’s deal with the devil allows him to do some literally impossible stuff, and though I don’t condone his Scientology ways, the man’s stunt work and efforts in his area of expertise are worth all the praise and respect. To be honest, I’m commemorating all three of the Mission Impossible flicks that graced our screen this year (Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation and Fallout). This franchise is like a game of dodgeball, except that Tom Cruise is the dodgeBALL, being thrown and thrust left and right like nobody cares. Also, with me being Russian, the fact that a movie manages to destroy the Kremlin and then have me not hate the film in the aftermath shows that this film is way too fun to hate.
2012:
DJANGO UNCHAINED - “Gentlemen, you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.” Quentin Tarantino is one of my favourite directors working today. And Django Unchained happens to be my favourite film of his. The writing for this film is orgasmic (I went there!). The way the actors deliver the lines and the lines of dialogue themselves sound almost poetic to my ears. I can quote so many lines from this darn thing. The cinematography is immaculate. The soundtrack choice is great. The performances, my goodness, the PERFORMANCES!! Jamie Foxx does arguably his career-best work here, but also we have Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio both chewing up the scenery, and I’m sure everyone has heard the story involving DiCaprio and the broken glass. Django Unchained is an easy choice on this list for me, and possibly in my Top 10 of all time.
LES MISERABLES - “Do you hear the people sing?” The film that is based on a musical that is based on a book that is based on certain true events. Tom Hooper did an interesting choice of having actors sing live in front of the camera during filming rather than pre-record their voices, and it works to grand effect, though Russell Crowe should have probably been given more singing lessons. The movie is one hell of a way to adapt such a popular stage musical. With an opening shot that emphasises the scale of this picture with a zoom-in towards this big ship during a storm being pulled by these poor prisoners, we are plunged into the despair and conflicts of various characters with adroit narrative thrust so that not a moment feels wasted or redundant. You’d think that a film with hardly any dialogue and an overall reliance on singing wouldn’t be so emotional. Yet, somehow, it works. Also props to Anne Hathaway for winning an Academy Award for being in a film for only 5 MINUTES!!
2013:
THE WOLF OF WALL STREET - “Sell me this pen.” Martin Scorsese’s mad look into Wall Street life is a bombastic caper and running at nearly 3 hours, Scorsese and his editing team manage to keep an astoundingly intoxicating pace that keeps you enthralled and engaged throughout. This one is definitely not for the families, as this R-rated fest is filled with drugs, money, sex and everything you can possibly imagine and paints quite the picture of the rich folks of Wall Street. And the middle of it all a bravura performance from Leonardo DiCaprio. Someone needs to give DiCaprio’s agent a raise, this is Leo’s third appearance on this list and we’re only in 2013!
THE WAY WAY BACK - “I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave. You're having way too much fun, it's making everyone uncomfortable.” Sometimes a little indie flick is enough to lift a human spirit. Real, fun, uplifting and innocent, The Way Way Back dedicated to anyone who felt awkward or out of place at some point in their life, which, let’s be honest, counts all of us. I’m not afraid to admit that. So stop being a b*** and reveal your sensitive side too! Yes, you, the person reading this. Who else could I possibly be talking to? Myself? Maybe. The Way Way Back though is one of the best feel-good indie films of this decade, with the loveable Steve Carell acting very unloveable and Sam Rockwell Rockwelling himself to charm city! If you’ve missed this one, treat yo’self and check it out.
2014:
THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL - “And?? Where is it? What's it all about dammit don't keep us in suspense this has been a complete f***ing nightmare! Just tell us what the f*** is going on!!!” Easily Wes Anderson’s best in my opinion (I have a friend who would argue Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums has the better hand but I think my opinion is more valid because it's me), this movie is a glossy, colorful, whimsical deadpan affair with an energetic turn from Ralph Fiennes as the hotel concierge M. Gustave H. as he and his lobby boy run into various Wes Anderson regulars and deal with murderers, stolen paintings, love affairs, prison breaks, and all kinds of crazy shindigs, but all shown in such a casual Wes Anderson way. This movie is like a slice of cherry pie - damn fine!
INTERSTELLAR - “Murphy’s Law doesn’t mean that something bad will happen. It means that whatever can happen, will happen.” As promised, Christopher Nolan makes another appearance on this list, now with his space time-traveling epic Interstellar, where he takes inspiration from the likes of Kubrick and Tarkovsky to give us, as always, a tad bit confusing adventure with great visuals and an interesting narrative (though it does sometimes get lost in its own way), however, the key thing holding this piece together is the father-daughter relationship with Matthew McConaughey and Mackenzie Foy (and Jessica Chastain) managing to bring so much raw emotion to their respective roles that you can’t help but want to shed a tear. I mean, I haven’t cried for over 14 years, but I remember when I first watched this film, the audience around me was sobbing quite a few times during the duration of this movie. Give it to Nolan to give us the emotional moments!
2015:
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD - “Oh what a day! What a lovely day!!” Easily the best action movie of this decade. Sorry John Wick, neither you or Tom Cruise could defeat this beast. The sheer, limitless invention behind this movie's exhilarating, preposterous chase scenes highlights action filmmaking at its finest. With big monster trucks and a random guitarist rocking-it in the middle of all the action, it’s like a nihilistic version of a Cirque du Soleil show! And it makes Tom Hardy the calmest person on-screen; no idea how it managed that.
STEVE JOBS - “I sat in a garage and invented the future because artists lead and hacks ask for show of hands.” If there is anyone who can make formulaic, mathematical or technological sound fun and exciting, its Aaron Sorkin. The man has a talent for writing screenplays about difficult and complicated topics yet turning them approachable for the casual moviegoer. Pair him with director Danny Boyle, and the result is Steve Jobs, a look at the man behind the phone. Narratively set during three important product launches of Jobs’, we get to see the behind-the-scenes of his relationships with his colleagues and family members, and this character study is one that could have easily fallen into generic biopic tropes, but it holds it’s own right till the credits roll. Also props for showing that Seth Rogen can actually do a serious role. Who would’ve thought that pot-smoking fella had dramatic chops in him?
2016:
NOCTURNAL ANIMALS - “Susan, enjoy the absurdity of our world. It’s a lot less painful. Believe me, our world is a lot less painful than the real world.” Fashion designer Tom Ford does sew his suits well. Apparently, he can also make great films too, with 2009′s A Single Man and with said Nocturnal Animals. This movie is truly incredible and I remember it taking me and my friend by surprise when we first watched it at the cinema. It’s shocking. Horrifying. Depressing. Upsetting. Altogether exhilarating. Being of a fashion background, Tom Ford directs the hell out of this movie, with gorgeous shots and great use of colour as well as managing to masterfully create tension and suspense when necessary. Honestly, I know Tom Ford is probably busy at a department store somewhere, but the guy needs to make another movie. The man has a talent.
LA LA LAND - “Here’s to the ones who dream, foolish as they may seem. Here’s to the hearts that ache; here’s to the mess we make.” Oh, La La Land. Damien Chazelle’s follow-up to the also excellent Whiplash. People who know me well know how much I love this movie. An old-school tour-de-force musical that’s a love letter to jazz and the golden age of Hollywood. The city of stars never looked so good. Featuring catchy original songs, excellent dance choreography (the sequence to the song “Lovely Night” is especially memorable) and a romance tale ten times better than the forsaken The Notebook, La La Land is one special movie. I know many are put off by the film’s not so happy ending, however for me it was the only way this narrative could have ended.
2017:
BLADE RUNNER 2049 - “We’re all just looking out for something real.” Similarly to Nolan, Denis Villeneuve is proving to be one of the most exciting directors working today. He’s the man behind such films as *deep breath* Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. And those have all been done within the last decade. The man constantly makes quality movies of various genres, though lately, he has been leaning more towards science fiction, which is a-okay in my books, since as Blade Runner 2049 proves, he can turn science into fiction like butter on bread. A sequel made 30 years after Ridley Scott’s classic, this visually breathtaking piece is arguably even better than its predecessor with many moments giving you the “wow wow wow wow wow WOW!” factor, and when Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford are both on-screen they are dynamite. Forget the new Star Wars film (that’s right, I'm throwing shade there), Blade Runner is where it’s at!
PHANTOM THREAD - “The tea is going out. The interruption is staying right here with me.” The supposed last Daniel Day-Lewis film, as he has now apparently retired from acting, but let’s be honest, nothing stops him from simply unretiring at any point. Exhibit A - Joe Pesci. However, like Pesci, if he comes back I’ll only be happy. He’s one of acting greats of our time, and his collaborations will director Paul Thomas Anderson bring out some of his best roles. Phantom Thread is a marvel of a movie. No, I don’t mean that’s its part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I mean as in it can fill one with wonder and astonishment. Phantom Thread is PTA’s Gothic dark fairy-tale romance film, which expertly planned shots and scenes where every word of the dialogue counts. There is no wasted moment. And as the film transpires to its dark and unsettling climax, one begins to realize that this, THIS, is what filmmaking is about. Telling an engrossing story in an interesting way with crisp-clear shots and off-the-chart acting at play, with great costume design on display, although the latter is unsurprising due to a major aspect of the movie revolving around fashion.
2018:
MANDY - “You ripped ma shirt!! You ripped maaa shiirrt!!” An acquired taste for sure, however, Mandy is indeed something truly special. From first glance, this film might seem like nothing out of the ordinary, especially from the point of view of the plot. Its the usual revenge flick. However director Panos Cosmatos’ vision and how he presents it is so much more unique. And what’s not love in this film? There’s something for everyone! It’s artsy and slow enough for the critics, hip and metal for the nonchalant, gory and violent for the hardcore genre fanatics and of course the Nic-Cage-rage factor is present for the fans of the actor. Alright, it may not be a family film, but this one is worth a watch. The whole thing is bound together by this psychedelic otherworldly environment, with the whole movie conceived in this dark, unsettlingly beautiful yet horror-filled aura that might stray people away, as it might be just too different for them, however, if you are looking for something different to watch, take mandy. I mean, watch Mandy!
A STAR IS BORN - “Music is essentially 12 notes between any octave. Twelve notes and the octave repeats. It’s the same story told over and over. All the artist can offer the world is how they see those 12 notes.” The film that began all the rumours surrounding Bradley Cooper’s and Lady Gaga’s affair. People, heads up, they are actors! They were putting on a performance! Jeez. That being said, I totally ship them. Nuff’ said. The film though? Yes, it’s good. Some country-style music, romance blooming, Gaga can apparently act, people sing about shallows for some reason...all together works for a pretty decent motion picture. Also, the fact that Bradley Cooper wrote, directed, produced and starred in this gives me so much respect for the guy. He poured his heart and soul into this. And Lady Gaga absolutely shines!
2019:
PAIN & GLORY - “Writing is like drawing but with letters.” Director Pedro Almodovar semi-autobiographical film takes a close look at how one deals with acceptance, being forgotten, symptoms of depression and generally all fairly negative attributes, but delivered in such an honest and profound way that there is a strange lightness that emerges from it all. Antonio Banderas is uncannily vulnerable in the lead role, delivering such an earnest performance that shows a man that is filled with melancholic regret who seeks his own form of redemption. This movie is a thing of beauty.
PARASITE - “You know what kind of plan never fails? No plan at all. If you make a plan, life never works out that way.” Parasite is easily the most original and surprising films of 2019, and possibly the decade, managing to subvert expectations and blend together so many different genres so naturally. To spoil any narrative element of this movie would be a sin, like this one in particular works best when not knowing anything about it. This movie comes to us from Bong Joon-Ho, a South Korean director behind such films as The Host, Memories of Murder, Okja, and Snowpiercer. It’s nice to see the awards ceremonies giving him the proper recognition finally. He deserves it.
That sums up my Top 20 Best Movies of the Decade list. Of course, there are so many other great films that came out in these 10 years, such as Whiplash, When Marnie Was There, Paterson, Silence, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Nice Guys...I can go on forever. Cinema is a constant ever-growing medium, and it is fascinating to see how it changes through the years, in some ways improving and in some parts not so much. In any case, I look forward towards a new decade of, hopefully, great movies, however, let’s be honest, for all these great films there’s always a Norm of the North, a Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse or frickin’ Cats. But let’s hope those will be kept to a minimum. In any case, bring on the 2020s!

TASK ONE: ABOUT ADORA JANE AJ DARKE !
Character’s full name: Adora Jane Mary-Anna Darke Reason for name and/or meaning of name: Adora Jane is her first name... yes, both names. All of her names come from family except Adora, because her mother always loved that name and She-Ra. Jane comes from her paternal grandmother, Jane Darke and Mary-Anna is her maternal grandmother’s name. Character’s nickname: AJ, Little Darke (to a small few) Reason for nickname: Her parents have called her AJ since she was a kid, she’s always preferred it to her full name. Older people around town have taken to calling her Little Darke since she was a kid, because she looks like her mother and because she’s the youngest member of her family, naturally. Birth date: August 30, 2000
Physical appearance Faceclaim: Lili Reinhart Gender: Cis woman Height: 5′8 Build: Slim and relatively fit Eye color: Green Glasses or contacts?: No Distinguishing marks/scars: She has a couple of small, faint scars on her arms and legs, most of which her parents assumed were from her childhood as she had a tendency to scratch herself during her nightmares. She has a very faint collection of freckles on the bridge of her nose and at the tops of her cheeks. She also has quite a few beauty spots/freckles on her arms. Hair color: Blonde Type of hair: Long with a slight wave, has some layering to it and is mostly nice due to her mother taking her to get it done whenever she’s home. Hairstyle: Typically she wears it half up half down, though she’ll often do a low ponytail or just have it out too. Voice claim: Lili Reinhart but without her singing voice... AJ cannot sing at all. Physical disabilities: N/a Clothing style: Mostly can be found in pants, ranging from thick, coloured corduroys, to jeans, to suit pants and at times, even the occasional pair of overalls. She’s often not caught dead without her favourite leather jacket, passed down by her mother from the 90s and still in quite good condition. She loves to wear button up dress shirts, vests and blazers. She’s typically in something belted and high-waisted. She also frequently wears boots and sneakers most often. She’s at all times wearing a crucifix with a built in blade and caries a worn shoulder bag. AJ tends to favour shades of brown, grey, black and green. Make up: If she’s had a late night, she might put on some concealer. If she wants to look nice, she’ll add eyeliner and maybe a tinted lip balm.
Personality Good personality traits: Quick-witted, loyal, intelligent, resourceful, charming, adventurous, amicable, playful, broad-minded, brave, determined, imaginative. Bad personality traits: Headstrong, secretive, compulsive, impatient, resentful, manipulative. Mood character is most often in: Contemplative but hiding it, usually wearing a smile Sense of humor: AJ loves to be sarcastic, she loves wordy, stupid jokes, also doesn’t mind a good pun Articulation: She’s fairly well spoken and tries to always pick her words carefully, she was really into giving speeches in middle school after she finally got some confidence... she then realised how embarrassing that was Character’s greatest joy in life: Being with her friends, uncovering new information with them and putting it all together Character’s greatest fear: Not being able to help or protect her friends and somehow losing them to her own ignorance Character is most at ease when: In her element, researching or putting together the board in Scooby HQ Most ill at ease when: She’s stuck on one particular thing and can’t get past it. She’s not good at putting things down and moving on, ever. Enraged when: Someone hurts one of her friends or lies to her Depressed or sad when: Her mother leaves for another trip Priorities: Unravelling the supernatural shit in Bridgemead, her friends, her family Life philosophy: Almost nothing is impossible Greatest strength: Her determination and strength even when things feel so much bigger than her Greatest vulnerability or weakness: Her tendency to push down and hide her emotions
Goals Drives and motivations: The search for knowledge, being able to keep herself and others safe Immediate goals: Solving each mystery/helping each person as they come along Long term goals: Becoming a fixture in her town, being appreciated beyond her circle
Childhood Hometown: Bridgemead, MA Type of childhood: From the ages of about 4-8, AJ was plagued by nightmares that seemed so incredibly vivid that they made her a very anxious, exhausted and grumpy little girl. Her parents tried to give time and energy to helping her, after it became clear that ignoring the problem wouldn’t help. Professional help is what they swore saved them all. Despite some of the more horrible stuff in her childhood, her parents did their best with her even if they weren’t really the most affectionate or naturally empathetic people. They never took her fears seriously, though. She formed a much closer bond with her mother, clinging to her even more when she started travelling again. She gained a lot of independence as she got older and when her parents noticed it, it gave them the confidence to let her do as she pleased, but it also let them pull back a little as parents, guilt free. Pets: Her dad is allergic to both cats and dogs, so they had a particularly large tropical fish tank instead. AJ didn’t name them because she liked calling them their scientific names instead and she liked watching them. Most important childhood memory: The first time her mother took her to the lookout tower 40 mins out of Bridgemead. It was towards the end of her struggle with the nightmares and she was feeling exhausted and sad, so her mother told her to get on her snow gear and took her out to look at nature as the sun went down. It was beautiful and probably one of her nicest memories from this time. Dream job: Private detective, but maybe the supernatural kind Religion: Her parents raised her as Christian, technically, but they never went to Church
Present Current location: Bridgemead, MA Currently living with: Still with her parents in North Bridgemead Pets: None, she wants a dog Religion: Athiest Sexuality: Not straight, but unsure Politics: Very left learning, always votes but struggles to stay up to date with everything Occupation/education: Graduated from high school, currently an assistant for her aunt, Delia Darke Mode of transportation: Baby blue Mustang Convertible, passed down from her grandmother, the family has paid to keep it in good condition
Family Parent one: Harrison Darke, doctor at Bridgemead General Hospital Relationship with them: Though AJ and her father are always in the same house, they kind of end up being two ships passing in the night, for the most part. He’s a workaholic and so is she, in a sense, though if he ever heard what she actually did outside of working for Delia, he’d be pissed. The two of them barely speak and their relationship only worsened when AJ came home unexpectedly early one day after a Scooby Gang and found her father with another woman in his study. He asked her not to tell her mother, so she asked for cash. He’s been paying her monthly ever since. Parent two: Clara Darke, travel writer Relationship with them: AJ’s mother is quite the flighty type, she hates staying in one place too long and is a social butterfly intensified by a hundred. She loves her job and sometimes spends months out of the country. She’s a little famous for her writing if you’re interested in travel. She tried a little harder to be a good mother when AJ was younger and they have a good bond when she’s around, but it’s mostly because AJ never wants to be ruining her moments with her by getting upset/complaining. They only really talk about superficial stuff, nothing deep and while she feels bad not telling her about her dad, she tells herself there’s no reason to ruin everything. Siblings: N/A Relationship with them: N/A Other important family members: Cordelia ‘Delia’ Darke, great aunt and her father’s aunt... often referred to as just ‘aunt Delia’
Favorites Color: Dark green Music: Moody 90s indie and rock music, she loves Fiona Apple and Hole Food: Steak Film: Heathers or Hellraiser Drink: Screwdriver, probably Form of entertainment: Does research count? She likes true crime documentaries and podcasts, too. Most prized possession: Her car
Habits Hobbies: Very early morning runs, research, puzzle games, sketching, journaling Plays a musical instrument? Only a little bit of acoustic guitar Plays a sport? She used to run track in high school, but that’s it How he/she would spend a rainy day: Probably cooped up in the library or her bedroom with several books in front of her, music playing, a scented candle lit and coffee. Spending habits: She tries to save as much as she can, despite the money coming in from two sources now, it’s not actually that much. She doesn’t splurge, mostly because she also doesn’t need to let anyone know about the whole blackmail thing. Smoking/drinking/drugs?: She drinks occasionally, if everyone else is doing it. Smoked once at sixteen, never again. Extremely skilled at: Research, gently manipulating people/getting what she wants, keeping secrets/hiding what she’s thinking, talking to people, thinking outside the box. Extremely unskilled at: Opening up to others, being sensitive enough to not choose the logical option, getting eight hours or sleep, patience. Nervous tics: Her stare typically intensifies in annoyance/anger when she’s nervous. Usual body posture: She has pretty good posture, always walks with her shoulders back and her head high. Mannerisms: She tends to get lost in thought, noticing things when maybe she should be listening. She folds her arms over her chest a lot or scratches the back of her neck when she needs to think quickly and feel stressed. Peculiarities: She sometimes won’t allow herself to do certain things until other tasks are done. Like, if they order pizza, she can’t have a slice until she finishes a task.
Traits Optimist or pessimist? Somewhere in the middle Introvert or extrovert? Daredevil or cautious? Depends on the situation, she leans towards cautious Logical or emotional? Leader or follower? Disorderly and messy or methodical and neat? There’s method to her mess, okay? Prefers working or relaxing? Confident or unsure of himself/herself? Animal lover? She thinks they’re okay
Self-perception How do they feels about themselves?: AJ is confident in herself because she knows her abilities and thinks she’s capable of a lot... but she also knows that she’s not really a good person, even if she justifies the things she does for the sake of the group or someone’s wellbeing. One word the character would use to describe themselves: Strong What does the character consider their best trait?: Her quick wit What does the character consider their worst trait?: Her inability to let things go What does the character consider their best physical characteristic?: Her legs What does the character consider their worst physical characteristic?: She never bought into the whole women hating their bodies thing, but she wishes she had more muscle definition How does the character think others perceive them?: She thinks people see her as strange, charming and determined. What would the character most like to change about himself/herself: She’d like to be stronger.
Relationships with others Opinion of other people in general: She thinks most people are blissfully clueless, but she doesn’t hate them for it. Opinion of the Scooby Gang: She’s protective of every member. She thinks they all have something to offer, but she also cares about them and considers all of them her friends. Does the character hide their true opinions and emotions from others? Absolutely, she’s not into sharing things unless they need to be shared. Most important person in character’s life: She would hate to answer this question. She’d say her aunt or her mother or even Arabella, but maybe it’s... herself? Best friend/s: Arabella Byrne, Dylan Frye and Kody Pierce. Dating experience: Literally none. AJ doesn’t date and claims loudly that she’d never want to date. One time a guy tried to ask her to a dance in middle school and she got so freaked out that she kicked him in the balls and ran away. That being said, her first kiss has happened and it was Arabella, but that’s not really a romantic thing. It was just the only person she trusted enough to do that with at the time and they were quite young. Romancing: First of all, AJ would probably bury those feelings so hard and avoid them so she’d never even go about romancing anyone. If she were really trying, or at least subtly trying, though, she might just do little extra things for them, leave them small gifts. It would be subtle. She has no active interest in dating.
Extra Physicality: AJ keeps relatively fit, but she doesn’t have fighting skills outside of self-defence just yet. She’d like to learn some. She also has started occasionally lifting weights to build up muscle. Species: Human How do they feel about it?: Part of her always feels a little uneasy because of how vulnerable she is, but she’s not sure she’d be lining up to be anything else just yet.

HELL O FRIENDS !!! IM SO EXCITED THIS IS FINALLY OPENING WOWOWOW Ok so hey hehe my name is fox (she/her), i’m 21 and in the gmt-3 timezone (so it’s likely i’ll be on here when most of you are asleep.... rip) and this is my baby seok moonbin!!! for starters, i’ll already tell you that he’s a very broke 23-year-old artsy boy who just wants to live his own life lmaooo you can find his detailed background and everything HERE, and his stats HERE, while under the cut i’ll basically sum everything up if you’re also like me and have the attention span of a fruit fly :> anygay i’ll also leave some possible connections here and !! that’s it?? HFJDSHFS pls like this if you want to plot and i’ll slide in ur dms k thx BYE
tw: mentions of underage alcohol and drug use, violence, anxiety/depression
background !!
moonbin was born in may 16th 2003 in busan so he’s 23 and a taurus baby <3
his birth was long awaited by his parents since they had been trying for a while, and a year after he was born they also had another boy
they moved to seoul when the two were still kids bc of his father being promoted
moony’s brother, jaesung, was always his best friend. they did everything together, played together, went to school together (their mom even sent them into school at the same time for their sake, so moonbin got into school 1 year late)
still, they had their differences, what with likes and dislikes, mostly bc jaesung was always more studious and straight to the point when moonbin was more imaginative, creative, easily distracted and loved everything that had to do with art
their parents disapproved of moonbin’s choices, since they wanted both of their sons to get jobs that could take them all kinds of places
everything stayed pretty much the same until they got into high school, where they were finally separated into different classrooms and jaesung’s behavior started changing bc of the people he started hanging out with, what one would call “the wrong crowd”; alcohol, drugs and too late night outs became something normal to him
it was pretty obvious that moonbin was left behind by his own brother, and he had to find his own friends, which were much more inviting towards him
jaesung started acting cold to moonbin even at their own home, and it didn’t stop there. as their high school years passed by, moonbin graduated and had to start working right away to be able to save enough money for college; his parents had way too much on their shoulders, since jaesung was suffering from anxiety and depression and had no intention of fixing that, only digging himsel deeper into the mess he was in and getting held back a few years in school
eventually, jaesung got so lost within himself that he ended up getting locked up after attacking both a random guy at a party and the officer who came over to separate them, and in his drunken state only made things worse for himself. that assured him more than ten years in prison, with a fee high enough to make his parents unsure if it was really possible to get him out
this happened when moonbin had just been accepted into college, and while the natural thing for him would be to just stay and help his parents out during such tough times, moonbin got easily affected by his friends and other people’s comments all the time, about his brother and how jaesung was in jail and simply associating moonbin to the person his brother was. it seemed so much easier to just go away and pretend like the life he lived up until he got into college didn’t exist, so that’s exactly what he did
if you ask him, moonbin will either deny he actually has a brother or disgard the family topic as a whole; he likes to think he’s detached himself from the reality he used to live in, so dependent of someone who so easily forgot about him
personality + extras !!
moonbin has always been very cheery and friendly, but before it was in a way more muted way than nowadays, since he doesn’t feel like he depends on anyone else to be around a crowd of people anymore
he always tries to make friends w everyone and likes to feel included when people remember him and such :>
at a party, moonbin is the kind of friend that everyone thinks is drunk when in reality he’s the only sober one lmao he rly only likes wine,, sometimes
moonbin is REALLY sensitive when it comes to things that dont concern his own personal emotions only. like for example.. he might cry during an argument about food or during any kind of movie lol maybe even in the middle of singing songs
very imaginative, often times has his head up in the clouds lmao also can be caught anywhere sketching in his little trusty journal, but he prefers painting over drawing anyway
another place he’s seen in is etude house, where he part-times and despite popular opinion, he actually thinks the pink uniform fits him quite well
ALSO he busks sometimes wherever ppl will have him !! he’s quite confident in his singing voice as well as his drawing/painting skills so thankfully he can also make a little bit of money from that (if u havent noticed, he’s broke)
PLS LOVE HIM HES MY BABY
wanted connections !!
ppl that study with him, study partners, someone that is tutoring him with a subject he cant quite focus in?? he’s not that studious lmao
a best friend??? someone who understands him and is able to crack him easily? he’s not very open to others about emotions and such, so it’d be nice to have that
he’s from seoul, so .. people who knew him back then? so like. high school friends, exes, enemies, all of that good shit
one sided crushes?? from him or on him, doesnt matter. maybe ur muse keeps visiting etude house only to swoon over moonbin dressed in pink.,, or he justs looks up to your muse and calls it a crush even if he knows it’s probably nothing too much
some deeper platonic relationships...
hook ups!! friends w benefits !!! all the romantic plots!!!
someone pls pls PLS give this boy a muse !!!!! doesn’t even have to be romantic but just like. maybe he saw your muse around one day and thought ‘OH shit wtf whos that person who’s suddenly given me an inspiration boost’ and proceeds to want to draw them at all times.. maybe even asks them to paint / draw them in person <3 could lead to more or not
idk maybe some enemies?? or ppl who dont like him? he doesnt rly drink or do any kinds of drugs (he’s traumatized by his brother) so idk maybe ur muse is rly into that stuff and got into an argument w moonbin about how he should live a little??? and moonbin got mad?? idk lmao
someone who’s seen moonbin busking a few times and just cant get enough of his voice.. his first “fan” :)
overall, just give my baby some friends pls <3
#if it's not obvious english is not my first language#pls be patient w me <3 thank u i love u yes u#ALSO IF U PREFER DISCORD LEMME KNOW#<3#┊. ➶ ˚ ᵒᵘᵗ ᵒᶠ ᵗᶦᵐᵉ 「 ooc 」

karmic reading for @dearwuby
hello! welcome to your reading. I'm going to give you a quick overview of what I'm going to talk about in this karmic reading: I'm going to analyze in-depth your south and north node in your birth chart, with all the aspects they make. in addition, I'm going to analyze every major aspect that represents a karmic debt, as well as easier aspects that represent what you have mastered in your previous life time. I will also analyze the placements of your planets in your chart to determine your soul's age, and hence whether you're an old soul or a new soul. last but not least, I'm also going to talk about your life purpose, what you need to put aside in this lifetime to focus on something bigger that will help you nurture your soul. let's get started!
🌕 Moon
taurus moon in the 4th house
in a karmic reading, your moon indicates something you've mastered in a previous life of yours, and that hence comes natural and automatic to you. in fact, there's a theory that states that your moon sign in this life used to be your sun sign in a previous existence of yours! with your natal moon being in the sign of taurus, it is probably natural for you to get attached to material goods. you could be very fond and possessive of your things, from clothes to money, or even food. it could be that you had some sort of restriction in your past life, especially with your ascendant being in capricorn, that restricted you from accumulating money and other material things. you didn't have anyone to spoil you, or perhaps you had so many responsibilities on your back that you couldn't allow yourself to live and enjoy the finer things in life. this is projected as materialism in this lifetime, you could be a little bit too attached to your stuff and money in general. you could struggle to make spontaneous gifts, especially if you don't receive another gift back. in general, you always feel as if you need to do something to receive something else back; that is, you may work mainly for money rather than indipendence or pride. you may only help someone if you know that that someone would also help you back, and so on. you could also struggle to express your feelings with words, you could be the type of person to show your love for someone through material things; for instance, you may prefer buying a gift rather than crafting it yourself, you're more logical than intuitive. I don't think that it's wrong, it's fine to enjoy shopping, food, etc. just remember that you shouldn't vent your worries in this way, it will become unhealthy in the long run. balance is the key; learn how to look more beyond the surface. it's a good thing that you're so attracted to spirituality, as it helps you understanding better what matters and what doesn't in the world, you'll benefit from this.
taurus moon sextile cancer jupiter: in a previous life of yours, you probably had a hard time handling your money and finances. probably, since you were quite an authoritative figure back then, it was easy for you to earn money and wealth. therefore, you used to spend money recklessly, without caring about saving up. basically, you took your finances for granted. you were also most likely very bossy, you could have abused of your positions at work for example., or maybe you were some sort of bully. luckily, this is something that you've already solved, and now in this lifetime you just need to prove the universe that you learnt your lesson. in fact, with your natal moon being sextile jupiter, you are naturally intelligent and open-minded. in your past life you could have been quite close-minded, and you tried to force your ideas on others. now, you understand the value of intelligence way better, and your soul has become more mature. you still enjoy being in charge, but not to be the boss, but to lead others. that's exactly the lesson that the universe wanted you to learn: appreciate what you have, don't over-indulge, and always treat others with a warm heart and words.
taurus moon square aquarius neptune: before getting into the real essence of this aspect, I wanted to point out that this indicates that it was probably fated for you to be born a woman. perhaps, in your past life, you were a man that didn't treat women correctly for example. or perhaps, while in your past life you were seen as strong, intimidating and bold, this lifetime you could appear more reserved, maybe passive. you don't feel the need to stand out anymore. aside from that, I assume that in your previous existence you used to attract lots of attention to you. you were probably someone in charge of something, you used to stand out, and that obviously caught others' attention. while this could be good as it made you quite popular and it made you feel important, you also attracted lots of criticism and malice from others; you were in the spotlight, so obviously there were loads of people who judged whatever you did. because of that, in this lifetime you could be very sensitive, you care a lot about what others think of you and about your reputation. you aspire to be efficient in whatever you do, you basically want to be perfect. in addition, in one of your past lives you probably had to deal with problems involving drugs, alcohol, etc. you may still develop an addiction in this lifetime, even to more common things like social media, sleeping, food... you could lack self-control and discipline, as you were way too tense in your previous existence.
🌙 Lunar nodes
sagittarius south node in the 11th house
this is another placement that indicates that you had a lot to deal with in your past life. in fact, your sagittarius south node made you come into this world with a big baggage of knowledge with you. you have this innate maturity and awareness of the world that you've accumulated from all of your past life experiences, it comes automatic for you. you may have your own view of the world, you are very open-minded and you have great and innovative ideals. yet, you can sometimes come off as too bossy, as not everyone may understand your thoughts. or perhaps, you may be so proud of your ideas that you don't take in consideration others' opinions. you could be driven to know everything about anything, you probably live to make new experiences and learn new life lessons that will make you earn more maturity and knowledge. you may also be very attached to your friends, you could be the type of person to prefer friends over love or even family. the problem is, you may give too much attention to relationship that won't be meaningful for the rest of your life; you could be superficial when it comes to friendships, or perhaps you're the one who tends to attract superficial friends. you may also like thinking big, having goals for the future, but you could have problems turning those aspirations into something concrete.
sagittarius south node conjunct sagittarius pluto: this placement confirms what I've been thinking about: I believe that in your past life, you were someone very powerful, or at least someone that easily had an impact on others' lives. what I'm going to say now is more based on my intuition, therefore it may not be totally accurate, but I keep seeing this image of this man dressed all elegant in my mind. you were probably a man, maybe a businessman, someone who owned lots of wealth probably, and you also had a long life. this placement indicates that you might've been born in a rich family, maybe in this lifetime or even in a previous one. your past life was filled with plutonic traits; you got to be in power, you were wealthy and you enjoyed taboo things in life, but you also had to experience lots of karma and transformation for your behaviours. secrets and lies were also apart of your past life, it would make totally sense if you were some sort of boss, ceo, maybe even a politician. you were powerful and influent in your past life, and hence in this lifetime you either feel the need to shine and be successful again, or perhaps it's the opposite; you shy away from attention, you focus more on your inner self rather than your reputation, your future.
gemini north node in the 5th house
your sagittarius south node indicates that in your past life you got to experience giant, big things in life, it was very full and pretty overwhelming as well. hence, with you gemini north node, you need to move in a smaller environment. you may wish to travel the world, learn as much as you can and you may be very attracted to foreign countries and languages, but in this lifetime your purpose is learning about your current, everyday environment. you need to embrace your roots, your culture, and learn and understand about it. it doesn't mean you can't work abroad from example, you just shouldn't focus as much as developing in your smaller environment. more specifically, gemini is all about words and communication; that means that those two things are going to be very important for you in this lifetime. especially since your north node is placed in the 5th house, you could become successful at creative communication, such as writing, singing, acting... especially since your sun is also conjunct to your north node, these affairs are extremely relevant in your current life. also, with your gemini north node also indicates that you're here to balance your existence; with your gemini dominance, you're able to adapt very well to environments, you can switch from a modality to another very easily, but exactly because of that you may struggle to identify who you truly are. you could have very contrasting traits, for example you may sometimes be patient, sometimes not. you need to focus on correcting this behaviour, especially when it comes to your negative traits.
gemini north node conjunct gemini sun: with this placement, you may be more interested in realizing your life purpose, in following what you're meant to be. in fact, you may actually detach from your south node way more than others, you don't see foreign affairs as a necessity in your life, but you probably still enjoy them as an hobby for example. you aspire to be successful in life; that doesn't mean that you have to be famous, it's still up to you to decide whether you want to become a celebrity or not, but you still need to achieve success in your small environment (and actually, it's what I'd suggest you do to do). also, you may also take advantage of your sagittarius south node that makes you naturally skilled at foreign languages to become a translator for example. in this way, you're going to make the most out of both of your nodes. you are very ambitious, but you may have the tendency to be too self-centered, you could think too much about accomplishing your goals and life purpose rather than developing your bond with other people. overall, I find it extremely beneficial that you're getting to know yourself in-depth through astrology; in fact, this placement requires you complete knowledge of who you are and what you want in order to be happy and pursue your goals to succeed.
gemini north node conjunct gemini saturn: I consider this placement extremely beneficial in your case; in fact, saturn being conjunct both your sun and north node makes you much more patient than the typical gemini dominant. you like being good and succeeding, but you don't have an enormous thirst for fame, achievements and just being over others in general. you're willing to take your time to understand what you want from life and earn it, you're an hard-worker. you are highly focused on your goals, you can concentrate way more than the typical gemini, and you're also fond of your career, reputation, etc. you may not start strong when first pursuing your dream career, but this placement literally assures you that you're going to be successful if you stick to your life purpose. you'll have to sweat and work a lot to get what you want, but once you do reach the peak, you're never going to leave it. you'll be crowned for your efforts. also, since your chart ruler is saturn, this placement is going to be even more important and beneficial for you, as it gives you the ambition to deal with your past karma and finally accomplish your soul purpose. it's no surprise that you're so spiritual in this lifetime, during your previous lives you couldn't understand what was good or not for your soul. this is your moment.
🪐 Saturn
gemini saturn in the 5th house
saturn is the great teacher, the karmic planet for excellence. it brings challanges to the matters of the sign and the house it is in, in order to make you learn from your past mistakes and handle your karmic debts. since your saturn is in the sign of gemini, your karmic issues have to do with gemini traits; perhaps, in your past life, you embodied gemini's negative behaviours. you could have been very superficial and unreliable, you most probably used to act for your own advantage. it could also be that you used to get influenced easily by others' opinions, and hence you never really stimulated your mind. you only fought for what others believed, you were some sort of boss that was still highly influenced by someone, and hence you weren't completely independent. while this placement can seem quite bad at first (like any saturn placement, after all), it has its serious pros. in astrology, gemini represents thoughts, the creative intellect. that's exactly the reason why geminis are considered to be flaky: they could get so invested into fantasy and creativity, that they forget to apply seriousness to their goals and acts. in your case, saturn compensates for that. you have the power, the potential to become an extremely intelligent person who's both imaginative and logical, a strategic thinker that can get anything thanks to your intellect only. in order to succeed, you need to stop being afriad or insecure. stop fearing that you may not be right, that you could sound stupid. it's okay to make mistakes, as it is thanks to them that you'll get to grow up and settle your karmic issues with the universe.
☔️ Retrograde planets
gemini mercury retrograde
you're a very introspective person. in contrast with your past life, where you probably were a charismatic and influential speaker, in this lifetime you may not be interested in making your voice be heard, or at least not in a traditional way. you may prefer staying silent, or perhaps you prefer expressing your feelings through writing, poetry, music, art... anything that doesn't allow you to use words, as you may struggle to find the rights ones to properly communicate your thoughts and feelings. what I've noticed in your chart is that there's this consistent focus on intelligent creativity; it's likely that in your past life, you didn't allow yourself to be creative and imaginative. you were too work and logic-oriented to dedicate your time to hobbies like music, art, etc. you weren't expressing yourself., you were pretty much shaped by your job. in addition, I feel like you also lacked spirituality in your past life. it would be extremely beneficial for you to start doing yoga, reading the bible or just whatever religion attracts you, meditating, manifesting... since your natal mercury is retrograde, you're naturally more connected to your inner self, it's one of the reasons you incarnated in this lifetime, and hence the law of attraction will work perfectly for you for example.
aquarius uranus retrograde
my take on this is that you were someone in the public eye, someone who was constantly analyzed and judged by society. hence, you always felt as if you need to have a nice reputation, you were some sort of people pleaser that would have died to keep their reputation together. because of that, you could have often felt as if you had to act like someone you weren't. actually, you might have been influence by your parents, maybe your father, or just someone very authoritarive in general in your past life. as a result, in this lifetime you are afraid of expressing your quirks, your uniqueness and individuality. on one side, you have amazingly innovative and revolutionary ideas, you're very open-minded; on the other side, you're afraid that others may think you're different, you probably don't want to be hated on or judged for being yourself, it would ruin your self-esteem, and hence you may tend to repress your ideas and feelings, especially with your mercury being also retrograde. you may wish to be in charge, to be someone people look up to, but at the same time you see it as something very overwhelming and large for you to handle. deep down, you're a free spirit. you hate being told what to do and what to believe in, you've come into this lifetime to develop your independence and give life to your own ideas and opinions, without others' influence.
aquarius neptune retrograde
retrograde neptune is quite tricky. this placement indicates that, in your past life, you were someone who used to lie very often. you used to fool people, you tricked them into believing in something that wasn't a part of reality. you took advantage of people, especially the weaker ones, in order for you to succeed and receive what you wanted. it was very important for you to be at the top, even though you could have been a bit nasty to achieve your goals. in addition, you probably weren't really attached to spirituality in your past life; you probably didn't believe in god or anything that alligned you with your higher self, and hence now you need to focus deeply about these topics in this lifetime. after all, that's why neptune is retrograde, in this way it will have a bigger impact on you and you'll be able to focus on it with more awareness. you could have some psychic gifts, you may be gifted with predictive intuition for example, or just anything that allows you to connect to the universe and analyze people and the world under a different point of view. for instance, you could even make a good astrologer or tarot reader. last but not least, you may also find yourself caring a lot about matters like psychology, dreams... anything that has to do with the unconscious you will be important for you in this life. you may also have to deal with your inner demons, such as addictions or maybe issues like depression or eating disorders.
sagittarius pluto retrograde
this placement indicates that during your previous lifetime, you probably had to deal with lots of traumas and enemies, as well as challenging moments in general. your past life was surely pretty intense, you had to handle lots of things not just physically but also emotionally, and it was obviously exhausting. now, in this lifetime, pluto is retrograde in your natal chart. that means that its influence is reflected inwards; while in your past life, plutonian matters were displayed on the stage for everyone to see, this lifetime you're more private and reserved. you prefer keeping your feelings for yourself, in a certain sense you may actually fear talking, especially when it comes to the inner, deeper you. basically, while your enemies were outside in your past life, in this lifetime your enemy is probably yourself. you're your worst judge, you're always over-analyzing everything you do, you're very harsh on yourself. you may often feel as if people are intimidated or annoyed by you, and as a result you could easily get intimidated and / or annoyed as well. you may also feel as if people may try to abuse you, they try to take advantage of you. you most likely have trust issues and you fear being betrayed. you're also very attached to your secrets, you may be extremely private about them.
🗻 Hard aspects
gemini mercury square aquarius uranus
in your past life, you most likely were someone very clever and witty. you had an innovative and strategic mind, you were a trusted leader thanks to your skills. you didn't conform to others, you didn't really care about following trends and stuff like this; you only followed what you thought was right, even though you could have been quite criticized. your mind was always filled with new ideas and projects, but just like in this lifetime, you most likely struggled to be consistent and get everything done, especially if we're talking about hobbies. in fact, you were driven by money and a strong sense of duty that allowed you to be hard-working when it comes to your career. overall, you still have some of that essence inside of you, and these past life-experiences may translate in this lifetime as being a little too intimidating. you could appear as someone cold or snob, maybe fron your apperance or even by the way you speak. because of that, you could struggle to be more extroverted, especially if you're surrounded by people that aren't similiar to you or that don't understand your needs. or perhaps, you could get bored very easily of stuff; the thing is, you still have the creativity and innovation of your old self, but you may lack the efficiency you had. therefore, you may often change hobbies, taste. even friends, sometimes, so be careful to control this impulse of yours.
🌈 Easy aspects
gemini sun trine aquarius neptune
your ability to detach from reality and get closer to your higher, spiritual self is your hidden strenght. you are extremely empathetic and compassionate of others, making you a softer gemini who understands others' needs. you're naturally creative and imaginative, you probably love art, music, dancing, singing... anything that has to do with creativity while expressing yourself. you're gifted with this natural imagination that makes it very easy for you to realize something creative and be complimented for it, simply because you're skilled at it. actually, a career in the creative field is highly recommended, but I feel like with your mutable gemini energy and your saturn influence, you'd also do great at more logic-based jobs, in an office for example. or maybe, to mix the two things together, you could become a creative director for example, it would be a nice career to fulfill your soul purpose. in addition, you also have a natural, great understanding of the human mind and soul, it's easy for you to connect with others, or at least it'll be once you get closer to your higher self, meditation could be extremely helpful. hence, you would do well as a psychologist, or maybe even as a teacher, someone who gets to help others. last but not least, while in your past life you could have struggled with drugs and other types of addiction, this lifetime you're blessed with awareness, and you probably don't feel interested in those things, even if you're feeling down you're still responsible.
cancer jupiter conjunct cancer venus
I feel like in this lifetime it's easy for you to attract luck and fortune, especially when you start having your spiritual awakening. you may be lucky in love, you don't have any karmic debts regarding love and relationships. you may attract very benevolent people in your life. in addition, you could also come from a wealthy family, or at least you'll be able to become wealthy thanks to your job or maybe even through marriage. you want to leave a peaceful life, you don't need any drama nor you attract it, I feel like this lifetime serves you as some sort of rest for your soul after all the challenges it had to endure in your previous lifetime. this is also another placement that indicates your innate talents at art, and jupiter means fortune; put these two together, and you get absolute success from creative outlets. I can't stress how powerful this energy is for your soul, you should totally embrace it. otherwise, this may manifest as laziness; creativity is too important for you to overlook it and leave it aside, it's a part of you that you can't leave behind. hence, if you pursued a career that doesn't involve arts, or that doesn't allow you to have enough time to nurture your creative hobbies, you may start hating your job and create an unhealthy relationship with your career life.
🏡 12th house
12th house cusp in capricorn
in a karmic reading, the 12th house indicates the higher part of yourself, your soul. because of that, it's usually associated with your previous lives, your karma and your previous identity before coming into this world. since your 12th house cusp lies in the sign of capricorn, I imagine that you were some sort of authority in your past existence. you probably were some sort of leader or boss, and because of that you obviously had a lot of responisibilities that made your life feel a little bit dull. in addition, the ruler of your 12th house, saturn, is placed in the 5th house; you used to think so much about your duties, that you didn't dedicate much time to yourself, for your mental health. you could have been so work-oriented that you didn't enjoy fun, youth, amusement, love... you could have been a career-oriented person, and since chiron is also placed in this house, I get the feeling that you could have lots of unsolved karma from your previous existence. you were a very authoritative and logical person, you probably weren't a much spiritual person back then. same goes for your career, you probably didn't have a creative job. you could have had an ordinary job in a bank, an office, etc. something very practical that didn't really need mental stimulation. this placement can as well indicate that you were wealthy in your previous lifetime, but you probably had troubles handling all of your finances. luckily, it's something that you managed to solve though, as you probably don't struggle with excess and impulsive shopping anymore as your taurus moon being sextile your jupiter suggests, even though you may still be a bit materialistic. talking about your soul's age, I don't think you're a young soul, nor an old one; I assume you're halfway through your journey. you have accumulated your karma in your past lives, now you just need to deal with it in this life and in your next ones.
this is the end! thank you again for booking a reading, I'm looking forward to your feedback :) - libramc xx

Like the 1960s generation had The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan, the Big Three of the 1980s were Prince, Michael Jackson, and Madonna. Their new albums weren’t just song collections, they were messages uttered by the Oracle up on the mountain, echoing across the valley. They were events, statements, re-incarnations. Each new album presented a new persona for fans to imitate and for critics to evaluate, or, in the case of Prince, decipher. (Artists, back then, had to change with each new release or else be considered irrelevant. David Bowie entered the 1980s a smart yuppie, George Michael in the span of 7 years went from sparkling teen idol to sensitive, searching biker cowboy.)
Michael Jackson and Prince were regarded as rival gods, with the former more commercially successful but the latter preferred by most serious music critics (though in reality, fans, like me, liked both). Michael Jackson played games with tabloid journalists, who in turn responded with growing hostility; Prince played pranks on music critics, who wilfully allowed themselves to be deceived and wowed by this inscrutable prodigy.
Michael Jackson’s Avalon was Neverland, a fantasy dream that always invited ridicule (though not from me); Prince’s Mount Olympus was Paisley Park, a place deemed so mythical that fans constructed their own maps from the few photos and bits of footage that existed of it, and then endlessly speculated on what life was like inside of it: the parties, the concerts, sacred rituals, whisperings, the spontaneous nightly sessions. “Did you know,” they’d say, wide-eyed, “Prince has this huge vault of original masters and unreleased music right under Paisley Park? Only he knows the key code.” Whole albums (all masterpieces of course) had disappeared into that vault, never to be heard by ordinary mortals. And he never slept: nobody had ever caught him sleeping. He just went on and on, creating music. That was Prince, the enigmatic wonder, the living love symbol, and flamboyant question mark.
I still find it strange to realize so many of the artists I just mentioned, who so energetically populated my childhood and early teens, are dead. Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, and George Michael all died within 7 years of each other; but there’s also Whitney Houston, Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain, and so many more. (Compare 1960s giants Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, who are still touring and releasing records.)
When Prince died, a little more than three years ago today, I was on Texel, an island to the north of Holland, where I live. I checked my phone, checked the news, like you so stupidly do every now and then, and then saw the incredible headline. A sunny day, clouds seemed to appear that moment. Some people love celebrity deaths and follow juicy rumor sites about who punched who and who stepped out of the limo without their knickers on; me, I get depressed. It’s like having swallowed a stone. The sensationalist cries around every celeb death to me are like a beehive of bad vibes, a pest, and I have to stay away from it as far as possible if I want to protect my mental health, or what’s left of it. Prince’s death made me take things slow for a week or so. I have to mentally chew on such things, change my settings, ease into the new reality, let my heart adjust to its new weight. I’ve often had to deal with death in my life, sometimes it’s as if every high-profile death shocks me back into that familiar feeling of dread and despair.
Though Michael Jackson’s Neverland has turned into a derelict theme park that carries the curse of being unsellable, Prince’s Paisley Park has become a museum. Occasionally, browsing the internet, I see photos of it, and I’m always struck, kind of uneasily, about how soulless it seems. What does the lair of an extravagant hermit look like? What did I expect? Not something that looks like the atrium of a New Age company maybe. Looking at the interior, those sad police photos that were released last year, I can’t help but see the stupendous mundanity of it all. The building itself, somewhere in a suburb outside of Minneapolis, resembles a bunker, and though the pyramid skylights, that vaguely resemble guard towers, provide some natural light, the rest of the building is artificially lit, but dark. The recording studio is just that. Some of the walls have sayings like “Everything You Think Is True”. Stained glass with stars, clouds, and guitars. There’s a potted plant here, and an ugly tangle of phone cords in the corner there. Prince’s bedroom was sparse with empty green walls, and a plastic trash can you can buy at your local Walmart (but he never slept of course). The legendary vault reminds me of the storage room of my dad’s old electronics company, with its disorderly shelves and half-opened cardboard boxes. And everywhere, in every corridor and every space, there’s Prince iconography, but it’s rather bland, like the cover of a cheap unofficial biography.
For Prince, it must have been strange living in your own mausoleum.
The music that came from that place though. I believe PARADE (1986) was the first full album he recorded there, and then everything that came afterwards. My uncle was a real Prince fanatic, taking a slew of albums with him whenever he stayed with us, bootlegs too, so from an early age I became quite well-versed in all things Prince. Bits of his lyrics are as familiar to me as old family sayings. Personal favorites are the albums 1999 (1982), BATMAN (1989), and the LOVE SYMBOL ALBUM (1992). I like the street-smart humor of his early stuff, the raw passion, the in-your-face sex metaphors, with symbols as loud as cymbals, just the wild mercury sound of it; later on, his work became more spiritual, and harder for me to follow. His whole being though was music, every movement was a melody, every step a beat; he created music the way other people breathe. He had more songs in him than a duck has quacks. If you listen to the posthumous release, PIANO AND A MICROPHONE 1983, it’s as if the piano, microphone and artist aren’t three separate things, but one organism, bleeding and generating music; it features some wonderful, loose playing. It seems to me that towards the end of his life, in physical pain and unable to play a piano or guitar unless stuffed with elephant tranquilizers, he started to drift, and drift further, until he fell over the edge.
Like Bob Dylan, whose mystique and inaccessibility he shared, Prince had a habit of frustrating his fans, by deliberately excluding a great song from an otherwise so-so album and storing it in his vault, or by making his music hard to buy or even find (online, before he died, there was almost nothing). That’s one reason I kind of stopped following him; the other is the depressing decline of his songwriting since the 1990s. Looking at his later albums, which I first dutifully bought until I didn’t anymore, there’s hardly anything I really like. None of the best-of compilations collect anything from after the 90s. What happened? Age is part of it of course. A decline in quality is inevitable, most musical artists do their best work in their 20s and 30s. It’s also possible Prince’s brand of singing about his women like they are divine vaginas simply went out of style. Once cheeky and outrageous (his work was why Parental Advisory stickers were invented), his songs no longer shock us 21st centurians. We’ve seen so much already. Dirty sex wasn’t the only topic he sang about of course (far from it), but it’s the one he pushed forward the most as part of his image; his “royal badness” was part of his appeal. (The BATMAN soundtrack originally was going to feature Michael Jackson as Batman, the force of good, and Prince as the Joker, representing decadence, sin, evil.)
But his supposed “badness” was an act of course. The cocky poses, flashy gestures and mean diva looks were an obvious shield against the outside world, a theatrical defense mechanism. An attempt to dazzle people before they can get to you. When you’re shy—and he of course was the shyest—you feel like everyone is constantly watching you, and you become overly aware of how you look, how you walk, how you come across; you are constantly aware of your physical being taking up space. So what do you do when you’re an artist? You perform. Everything you do becomes a kind of performance, a conscious act. It gives you a feeling of control: you know why people are watching, because you’re making them watch you. But the essence of it is always shyness and nerves.
There’s something endearing about that 1983 footage of him being invited on stage for an impromptu jam by James Brown, who a few minutes earlier had invited Michael Jackson up. Ready to upstage his rival, who had just performed some killer moves, Prince takes the stage, struts, plays some random riffs, struts some more, suddenly takes off his jacket and does some tricks with the microphone stand, claps to whip up the audience—and then as he wants to make a fast and sudden exit, he clumsily goes down knocking over a prop, stage hands hastily arriving from all sides to help him up.
He died in an elevator near the lobby, but the spot itself has been covered up by a new wall (it’s near the watchful eyes in the third image). I keep wondering what happened. Was he making his way down to the ground floor from his production offices, or was he going up from the recording studio to his bedroom to maybe sleep? One associate, questioned by police, stated that Prince had told her he “was depressed, enjoyed sleeping more than usual and was incredibly bored”, and that at his last concert, he felt like he was going to fall asleep on stage. Those were rare remarks. An intensely private person, he mostly hid his problems, not just from others, but even from himself. The end, then, was inevitable. As with Michael Jackson six years before, the drugs relieved him of his pain, and then of his life.
He never slept, and when he did, it was 4ever.

TGF Thoughts: 3x05-- The One Where a Nazi Gets Punched
One recap down, two to go. Think I’ll be able to write them before the next ep airs? I doubt it.
The episode opens by confirming Maia’s gone from RBL: Her name’s no longer on what used to be her office, her documents are being shredded, and all her personal belongings are in a box.
Marissa decides to pick a fight with an associate over Maia. “If you didn’t like Maia, you could have just come out and said that,” Marissa says. Uh. I don’t think Maia got fired because one associate didn’t like her but okay Marissa. The associate insists she’s not happy because she didn’t like Maia, she’s pleased that the zero-tolerance policy is being enforced consistently.
I do wish people would stop saying “Maia’s been arrested twice” because one of those arrests was in no way her fault. Every time anyone tries to use that as an argument, it makes me want to defend Maia even though I totally believe the partners had reason to fire her.
“Maia didn’t use drugs,” Marissa, who faked a drug test on Maia’s behalf, insists. Alright Marissa.
The whole 22nd floor starts to bicker, and Julius goes to inform the other partners that Marissa is stirring the pot. “She’s only stirring the pot because she feels that Maia was made a sacrificial lamb to the fact that the partners don’t want to pay for true financial parity here,” Diane says in defense of Maia/Marissa. Does that mean Diane wants to take whatever pay cuts and struggles come with paying true parity? Or does that just mean Diane wants her goddaughter to be able to get ahead?
To pay everyone the same amount at each level (which I’m not convinced actually gets at the root of the problem if they don’t put measures in place to make sure performance evaluations and opportunities are also awarded equally) would cost the firm $800,000 a year. That’s less than I thought, if only because whenever the partners are personally liable for something it’s always at least a million a person and when they bring in a big client it’s always like 35 million dollars/year in billing. And didn’t they pay off lots of the women Reddick assaulted with at least 800k?
Adrian is very right: this strategy would also raise the lowest performers to the level of the highest performers (within their job title), and then the highest are going to want more, and then the problem resets. How do you determine who the highest are, and which of the highest threaten to leave and which stay no matter what, and so on.
“Maybe we should consider it a human resources issue,” Julius says. Maybe? MAYBE? You’ve got associates fighting while on the job and internal documents circulating and you’re only NOW thinking to involve HR?
Julius wants to hire an expensive sensitivity trainer to talk to the associates instead of paying them more. Sounds like something the partners need more than the associates. Also would that go over well? I’m imagining the associates being like, wait, they have money for this but not money to pay me fairly? And now they’re telling me I need sensitivity training to cover their own asses, as though I just decided to pay myself less? If they do this sort of training in conjunction with an actual fix, sure, whatever, they may need it just to deal with the infighting. But alone? Noooope.
This conversation gets interrupted by an assistant telling Adrian that Judge Dunaway is wondering why he’s not in court. “An associate” is there and Dunaway wants to know why no one else has showed up. None of the partners knew anything about a motion in this case, so they suspect Maia of trying to steal their client.
I think Maia could try to steal a client, but I don’t think she’d ever think to do it.
They put Maia on their biggest case? Just Maia and Lucca and the partners? This sounds wrong.
Maia’s not returning Diane’s calls. I think it’s pretty clear that Diane wants the best for Maia, but I can totally see why it might not feel that way to Maia. She’s not handling this in the most mature way, but I’ll cut her some slack. She was just fired, after all!
Lucca and Jay are in the middle of nowhere, poll watching. Lucca worries this assignment is punishment for stirring up the salary drama (though idk how anyone other than Jay would know to tie it to Lucca!) and I don’t think she’s wrong. She’s a fucking department head and they have her out poll watching?
Maia isn’t the surprise co-counsel: Blum is. That makes way more sense, but also, UGH. I’m over Blum.
This case is interesting but I’m still going to write it up as “Case stuff happens” for the most part. Its premise is more interesting than its execution. I kinda just want to Google what kinds of suits are pending against real life genetic testing companies.
Blum got on this case because of documents he stole from Diane’s office. It is very possible RBL has worse security than Alicia’s apartment building.
Maia’s got a new job at something called Consult-a-Lawyer, a phone helpline that charges clients by the minute (and makes sure each call takes many minutes). This seems terrible.
Lucca and Jay talk with their Republican counterparts; they disagree but can at least talk about their disagreements. Also, none of them are really there to be poll monitors; they are there to try to sway the election results by fighting to selectively enforce rules. I’m sure they’d take issue with that phrasing but that’s what they’re doing.
Marissa’s noticeably grumpy at work and tells Diane it’s because her “best friend” was fired. Marissa says and does so much stuff that no one else could get away with; this is not a proper way to conduct yourself at work-- especially towards the people who are on your side.
Diane is reaching out to other firms on Maia’s behalf. That’s privilege at work right there.
Diane tasks Marissa with watching Blum. She also confuses Marissa and Maia, which is weird since only one of them is her goddaughter.
I am SO OVER Blum. Why is he so loud?! When I watch these episodes first thing on Thursday mornings, the last thing I need is his maniacal screaming.
Marissa is unimpressed with Blum.
OH MY GOD MAKE HIS LOUDNESS STOP. I just don’t care. Just gonna let this next bit with the song play while I change my sheets, because I have nothing to say about it.
And then I did laundry, went on two trips, and visited a bunch of bookstores and now I’m back, three recaps behind.
I didn’t even get to the credits before I stopped writing!? Me of three weeks ago, what were you doing?! (The credits are 17 minutes in, to be fair.)
He’s so loud! So! Loud!
Some sort of white (male) supremacist group shows up at the precinct Lucca and Jay are monitoring.
Diane and Liz meet with the sensitivity consultant, who has them do an exercise as a test. It’s one of those games where you take a step forward/backward if a sentence describes you. Neither Diane nor Liz wants to participate, but the game ends up working on them: turns out they both like singing, Prince, Roma, and Hannah Gadsby. LOLLOL I believe every one of those things.
I don’t know what Lucca thinks Diane will be able to do to help with the white supremacists, but she probably doesn’t suspect Diane’s going to have her unwittingly help #Resistance.
Case stuff happens. It involves Blum singing. Go away.
Jay calls Naomi with the story about the Red Jackets, while Diane’s #Resistance buddy (what is her name? I’m going to have to pay more attention because she is “The Young One Who Does Computer Things” to me, but she’s been in enough episodes I should probably learn her name) gets the Red Jackets fired.
Case stuff happens. Blum puts another actor on a stand as a witness.
Marissa comes to visit Maia at work. At this job, Maia actually has to do work and gets negative feedback when she doesn’t do work well, so as happy as she is to see Marissa (and the Sunglasses of Badassery), she can’t chat long.
Maia is not as happy to help with work related things. In fact, given that I’ve seen the next two episodes (and the end of this one), Marissa reaching out to Maia about something work related may even make Maia feel like her work friends never really cared about her.
Marissa also brings Maia a list of three firms where Diane’s put in a good word. “Diane doesn’t care about me,” Maia, who got the only two jobs she’s ever held because of Diane, insists. Sure, Maia. But I won’t criticize her too much-- she WAS just fired.
Marissa loudly informs the entire Phone-A-Lawyer office that it’s “not fine” to work there. I love Marissa but she lacks self-awareness, like, all the time when she’s not undercover.
Maia’s supervisor isn’t pleased Marissa’s shown up during work hours. She asks her to leave, but does help out with the case.
“If you don’t call them, I will,” the woman in the cubicle next to Maia interjects, offering Maia some much-needed perspective. Maia’s been through a lot, but it’s still clear she’s not someone who has ever had to worry about money.
Lucca calls the police on two of the Red Jackets (they’re sex offenders) just as Naomi’s news van shows up.
Naomi and Jay are a couple which surprised me but, you know, I don’t hate it. Actually, I think I like it.
The judge Adrian is sleeping with does him a favor in court. This relationship? I don’t think I like it.
Diane and Liz regroup about the sensitivity consultant. Liz doesn’t think she’s worth the money, since no sensitivity game will ever solve racism (she’s right-- I don’t know that I think they’re completely useless but they are never going to get at the root of the problem). Diane suggests midyear bonuses instead; Liz points out they’ll know they’re being bought off.
Then something magical happens: Diane and Liz start SINGING! It’s so fun. It’s also a great character moment. We’ve never seen Diane have a female peer at work she could just be herself around, and this strengthens the Diane/Liz friendship that’s driving a lot of the season.
A sex scene quite rudely interrupts the wonderful duet.
If anyone’s written anything on Judge Hazelwood, I’d love to read it. I’m intrigued by her use of power but I think I need to read someone else’s take to fully understand what the writers are (attempting to) do with her.
“Your head is like a sculpture. I want to cut it off and put it on my desk,” is a VERY DISTURBING LINE.
Maia’s using her mom’s maiden name again-- smart. And she took Diane up on the interview offers-- also smart. (Yes, I’ll call her privileged for even having those offers, but I don’t take issue with her using connections. I don’t care if she’s privileged; I care when she lacks self-awareness about it.)
The job won’t start until November, which makes Maia angry. She sees this as Diane trying to fuck her over, when really she’s been offered a job 30 seconds after introducing herself because Diane’s recommendation means so much. Maia TURNS IT DOWN, even though it’s a promise of good work in six months and the best lead she has. Unless there’s going to be something in the contract about how she cannot accept another job if one comes up in those six months before she officially starts, WHY? WHY TURN DOWN GOOD WORK AT A TOP FIRM JUST BECAUSE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU COULD DO BETTER? YOU’RE WORKING AT PHONE-A-LAWYER.
And this dude gives her so many chances-- he even says to let her know if she winds up being available.
Her only question is whether Diane knew about the late start date. The interviewer thinks so, and Maia takes it as a personal insult. Oof. You know what most low-ranking people who are fired for drug use get? Here’s a hint: it’s not interviews at three top firms with the highest recommendation from a well-respected name partner.
NOTHING about this reaction from Maia is out of character for her. I just have no patience for it.
Adrian and Blum collaborate in one of the more interesting scenes they’ve done with Blum. He’s loud and devious, but he’s not stupid. And watching Adrian understand and go along with Blum’’s strategizing-- setting the stage for him to normalize all of Blum’s other, more illegal antics as appropriate workplace behavior-- is fascinating.
Naomi is polite when interviewing one of the Red Jackets, but she refuses to shake his hand. I like that moment.
Jay punches one of the Red Jackets after the Red Jacket antagonizes him. The Republican poll monitor sees the whole thing, but decides to say nothing. (The point, basically, is that we can find common ground with people we disagree with, and that only CERTAIN people we disagree with are actually the enemy.)
A riot breaks out and we see only a little bit of it before Jay starts monologuing about his belief that Nazis should be punched. Dunno to what extent I agree (slippery slope, etc) but I do know I’m not going to waste any time being outraged over one of them being punched.
More case stuff happens.
Lucca, Jay, and Naomi share beers after the riot. They’ve all emerged from the riot safely. This is a nice scene; I love watching these characters just hang out. Apparently Jay had a crush on Lucca for a little while, which I find kinda cute as long as it doesn’t go anywhere beyond that (SO OVER WORKPLACE ROMANCES ON THIS SHOW).
Maia calls Lucca, but Lucca can’t get any reception so she decides to be 2x14 Alicia and find a high spot on top of a car. Her phone still gobbles the call, though. Maia takes this, too, as a personal insult.
Diane calls Maia and Maia refuses to answer. Oh, Maia. If I got the sense she wanted to do this without help-- kind of like s7 Alicia not wanting to answer to anyone-- that would be one thing. This just sounds petty.
Oh goodie! We get MORE BLUM in the future: he’s now working with RBL on the Second Helix case for the near future. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.
Maia’s packing up her apartment now that she can’t afford the rent, and another firm Diane set her up with tells her the soonest they can interview her is in a month. Well, at least she’s still trying. She throws her phone on the floor in frustration, and I do feel bad for her. Just, like, not that bad.
Lucca shows up at Maia’s door, since Maia’s now not answering her phone. Lucca explains her day and why she wasn’t near her phone-- and her reasons are, of course, valid-- and Maia just doesn’t care. You’ll remember that Lucca doesn’t have friends and that when Lucca shows up for someone, she’s all in. Maia, who is actually friends with Lucca, has not picked up on this (or is not willing to acknowledge it). Lucca offers to get dinner (and to pay), and to spend time away from her baby after a stressful day. She says she feels awkward about how things went down at work.
Maia doesn’t just decline the invitation or say it’s not a good time. She says she and Lucca were “work friends” and shuts the door. Well, that’s harsh. I don’t really fault Maia for feeling detached from her old workplace or awkward around her old work friends, or for needing time to herself. But wow, this is a phenomenally awful way to treat a friend. (And not that I need to pile on more, but Lucca and Marissa have both been FAR more supportive of Maia than Maia’s ever been of them.)
#this may be my worst recap ever#i don't mean that in a 'omg please validate me' way i mean that in a#'wow i didn't say much of anything about this bc i didn't put much thought into it since i just wanted to get it done' way#also the next 2 eps are maia free so maybe for once i'll do something other than complain about her#but if i'm not complaining about maia and i'm barely recapping anything blum does what will i even write#tgfthoughts

“Hello, my name is V. I love you,” Taehyung’s deep voiced drawled slowly, eyes watching you curiously as he dragged each syllable carefully. You nodded along with his words, confirming that he had been pronouncing them well.
“Good! Now, what else can you say?” You spoke in perfect English, gauging Taehyung’s ability to listen and understand along with responding in your mother tongue. He paused for a moment, intently trying to piece together the phrase to then answer properly.
“Uh,” He stammered, Taehyung repeating the script he’d made for himself in his mind. He ran through the possible questions he’d have to answer, English reporters having the same usual queries for the lot of them and they’d typically ask Namjoon all the insightful ones. “Do your best.”
You tittered at Taehyung reciting what he once confidently said to Eric Nam on their visit to ASC quite some time ago, his small phrase inciting coos from fans all over the world and even managed to make the show’s host flustered.
“You’re too cute, Tae. Do you know how much fans love when you say stuff like that?” You spoke in Korean once more, to Taehyung’s relief. He winked at you and turned on his charm as he returned to his comfort zone.
“Of course! I’m supposed to make their hearts flutter,” He posed cutely, in what you could say as a ‘flower stance’ with his hands at his cheeks, the fluffy fat there squishing up adorably to make his eyes form crescents.
Rolling your eyes, you turn back to your phone to read an email from a company hiring you to translate at some event, boring business work as usual.
Taehyung—always the nosy badger that he was—peered over your shoulder and rested his cheek on it as he read your message.
“Aw, don’t tell me you’re leaving us again?” He pouted and you pinched his cheek in retaliation, watching as he let the air out of his mouth through his pursed lips. “Why don’t you just stay with BigHit permanently, Y/N?”
“Because Taehyung,” You began, sighing in exasperation at having to explain this to him for the nth time since you began tutoring Bangtan in English. “BigHit only hires me from time to time, rent is more than just one paycheck from showing you all how to say you love pizza.” He groaned and laid back onto the black couch, throwing a small tantrum at not getting his way again.
“Quit being such a baby, it’s only for a few days. The business conference is in Gwangju, I’ll be back in a day or two, tops. It’s not like I was scheduled to see you guys before then anyways,” You trailed off, responding to the email with quick fingers much to Taehyung’s chagrin and he literally whined like a kicked puppy and looked the part too.
“Hey Y/N! What does this mean?” Hoseok came from his make-up chair, hair all coiffed up to look even more regal than normal. You took Hoseok’s phone from his hands, reading over the tweet replies that had come from his recent selfie. Most of which were really eccentric ways to say I love you or a mix of people saying variations that they’d had their wigs snatched or their hearts fell out of their ass.
“Just that you look great, Hobi.” He beamed and nodded as he bounded away, bragging to Seokjin about how many retweets he’d gotten and Seokjin threatened to post the one “risqué” photo he had on his phone to see just how many retweets that’d get. The shade of red that graced his face before draining rapidly was sort of scary, and you wondered if Hoseok was going to faint from the fear alone.
A few of the others around chuckled at the reaction and Namjoon clapped him on the back to break him out of his stupor, a little too hard if you had to judge from how much Hoseok’s body jerked forward.
“Y/N,” Taehyung drug out your name, remaining in his role as a whining puppy. “It’s not that you don’t have an appointment, but when will we see each other?” He enunciated his words carefully, treading around the meaning and raising his brows in hopes to translate what exactly he meant.
A quick look around to make sure no one was watching or listening to the two of you had reassured you and you leaned in to speak in hushed tones.
“We can still talk on the phone,” Pointing at the said device, Taehyung nodded in understanding from your words before trying to string along his own response. He stuck his tongue in between his teeth as he thought, a strand of fiery red hair dipping down to hang in between his eyes and while he continued to ponder, you took the liberty of pushing it back to join the rest at the sides of his forehead, along the edge of the patterned bandana he’d been put in.
“I understand, but I want to do more than talk,” His words came out stuttered and broken, long pauses as he thought of conjugations and proper tenses. “I want you, Y/N.” You tried to shush him at the words, still warning him that there were too many people and prying ears around to be completely safe but his eyes bore into yours, a darkness swirling in the hot cocoa of his irises.
“Tae, you need to calm those wild hormones of yours,” You shoved the red-haired boy away from you, trying to gain distance from him and his wickedly enticing lips for fear of what you might do on impulse if they stay so close to you for any longer.
“Alright all, prepare to head on stage!” Some staff shouted, gathering the group and they had a small pep talk before breaking to line up for their Fire stage. Taehyung looked back and winked at you before making his way to the door, heading out to dance and sing his heart out.
○ ◐ ●
Taehyung laid in the comfort of his bed, juggling his phone restlessly in his hand as he tried to think of anything else.
Anything other than your legs and body and pretty lips that look so much nicer when they’re wrapped around his—
“Hey Tae Tae, we’re going to that lamb skewer place around the corner, did you wanna join?” Jimin came into the room, already bundled comfortably in a hoodie and black jeans, phone in hand. Jeongguk popped up from behind him to shoot him a pleading look to join the rest of them, but Taehyung had already decided on what he needed.
“Oh, never mind then.” Jimin smirked and hid his laugh behind his petite hand, gesturing to where Taehyung was pulling his shirt over. Jeongguk was about to protest some more but with Jimin leading him away by the waist, he hadn’t the chance to even get a word out before he was guided out of the room and the door was shut behind them.
Taehyung sighed as he let himself melt into his mattress, thoughts running rampant about you. He hadn’t been able to focus on anything else since the day you’d left to board a train to Gwangju, wearing a pretty pair of shorts and a cut-off t-shirt, looking like his wildest dreams all wrapped up into one pretty package.
With a tug of his belt, he shimmied out of his bottoms and laid sans pants for a minute, trying to pick out one direct thought to work with before finally feeling his dick twitch at one particular memory.
You’d been working hard with Jeongguk in teaching him the lyrics to a song he planned to record a cover for in the recent future. The entire time, your focus had been on the youngest and thus you had missed the serious ogling you were receiving from Taehyung.
It wasn’t his fault, he swore by that. It was all because of that pretty dress you’d chosen to wear that revealed most of your back in an open-cut design, giving him all sorts of ideas on touching you there, knowing how sensitive and ticklish some spots were.
With the tangible thought in mind, Taehyung closed his eyes and focused on the exposed skin of your back, the midriff of the dress rising as you crossed your legs. His palm sneaked down to rub at his rapidly growing erection, the length tensing with timid touches.
He groaned and threw his head back, mop of red fanning around him like a bloody aura. The iridescent scarlet halo framed his sharp jawline and crisp cheekbones, cradling the soft dips of his baby fat and following the curve into his almond, cat-like eyes.
Taehyung reached into his boxers and took himself in hand, not bothering with taking out his cock just yet. The friction was delicious, just what he needed to ease the thoughts that were running nonstop in his mind.
But, just as he was getting into the midst of things, his phone began to vibrate off in the distance. It rumbled by his pillow, somewhere around his bed. He released himself in frustration, grimacing at the feeling of pre come soaking into the fabric and sticking to his skin. A little bit of shuffling earned him the feeling of his plastic case before finally bring up the phone to his ear, not even looking at the caller ID as he punched the green answer button and grumbled into the phone.
“Wow, didn’t realized I rang up Grumpy.”
“Oh, Y/N!” Instantly, Taehyung’s mood brightened. He beamed and held the phone closer to his ear, adjusting his dick in his boxers as the strain got a little uncomfortable the longer he laid there. “I didn’t see it was you calling, I’m sorry!”
“Yeah you better be, all this crying about me not being there and when I try to cheer you up with a call, you get pissy with me.” Taehyung giggled a little mischievously and apologized once more. You followed up with asking about his day, making sure he was eating and staying hydrated.
As he answered your usual queries, Taehyung shifted a little on the bed and let his hand run down out of habit, rubbing along his soft tummy and dipping under his waistband. It was a totally normal guy thing to do, and he just grabbed his cock and gave it a little squeeze, feeling the heft of it lay in his palm.
“You okay, Tae?” The groan he’d let out hadn’t gone unnoticed by you, though Taehyung hadn’t realized he emitted it in the first place. His eyes went wide for a moment, lips pursed tight as he tried to stay pin-drop quiet.
“Y-yeah, everything’s fine! Just stretching,” He mimicked a yawn that was clearly exaggerated and you rolled your eyes at his terrible lie.
‘C’mon, don’t lie to me.”
His guilty conscience was barely there, overshadowed with the itching need to finish what he’d started. He had been riled up for some time now, anyways.
“Alright, alright, I’ll admit it. I was jerking off when you called,” Taehyung tried to listen to your reaction on the other end, silence bearing a heavy weight on his mind. When you hadn’t said anything for a full, swollen minute, the boy began to worry. “Uh, Y/N?”
You stammered out an apology, not realizing how quiet you’d been.
“You thinking about it?” He asked, smirk toying on his lips as his hand began to massage his length slowly, teasingly.
“A l-little, shut up.” At that, Taehyung chuckled and he felt his hard on come back at full force, no longer feeling like he had to conceal his noises as he pulled the waistband far enough down to let his cock spring out, slapping the soft, wrinkled fabric of the old tee he had on.
His audible hiss had you crossing your legs tighter, sitting in the open hallway of the conference rooms where a few swiveling seats had been placed along the walls. You tried to look inconspicuous as businessmen and women alike passed by, conversations in tow about deals and marketing and strategies.
“Taehyung, I’m in public,” You whispered into the receiver, smiling at a man who had passed by as you spoke, giving you a strange look.
“Oh? Kinky, aren’t you?”
With an affronted snort, you look at the phone as if you could channel enough power to make Taehyung feel the glare you were giving it.
“I was thinking of you, in those cute shorts you left in. Made me wish I had gotten the chance to eat you out before you left—”
“Taehyung!”
He giggled into the phone, letting his voice drop to its natural baritone octaves as he continued to prod. He allowed his hand to slowly stroke himself as he spoke, a smooth glide to counter his filthy phrases.
“When was the last time we even did anything? No wonder I’m so horny, I haven’t gotten my vitamin Y/N yet,” A squeeze at his head make even more pre come dribble out, the fluid in Taehyung’s eye line as he brought his fist back down to the base, letting his thumb graze the sensitive skin there.
“T-Tae, we can’t be doing this, at least not now,” You tried to sound commanding but your voice was giving you up quickly, the shake in it making it clear to Taehyung that you were just as affected as he was. That was his saving grace, the little bit of glory he found in this situation.
“Mmm, I miss your mouth. Having you suck me off is like a dream, so hot and wet—I just want to fuck your throat until it’s raw.” You sat in silence, trying to fight off the look of complete and utter desperation that tried to cross your features. You were due to return for another seminar to translate for in a few minutes, ten tops. “How do you think you’d be able to teach us English if you can’t even speak?”
He already had you speechless, face flushed with heat while your thighs clenched harder at his sinful tongue and the serpent-like speech that was flowing from it. He was going to be the death of you; a deep lungful of smoke slowly but surely killing you.
“You’re so sexy, Y/N.” The English came out smoother than it normally did, with a trained finesse you knew only came from hours of practice. Sure, he would refuse to go over normal notes like introductions and answers to questions but of course he’d memorize how to talk dirty in another language.
It’s like they say: when you learn a new language the first thing you need to know are the curse words.
“Fuck, you drive me crazy, baby.” Taehyung let his hips rise as he fucked his hand, the sounds much more noticeable now that there was a steady stream of pre come slipping down his cock. You bit down on your lip hard, closing your eyes and counting to three slowly.
“W-where are the others, Tae?” Taehyung grinned that you were finally taking part in the conversation, slowing his hips down to a gentle grind as he looped in you like a siren with their call.
“Out, eating I think. I honestly wasn’t paying much attention, all the blood was elsewhere and not in my brain. Jiminnie saw me, he knew I needed some relief. If only you were here to grant me some,” He exhaled slow and loud, drawn out to your ears.
With a gulp, you proceeded in hushed tones, eyes looking back and forth for any prying ears.
“Are you close?”
He hummed, upping his speed once more.
“I could be. Are you?” With a negatory noise, Taehyung thought for a second before rolling his hips in tight circles, into his calloused fist with neatly trimmed nails lightly grazing his length. “What’re you wearing?”
You looked down, inspecting your outfit as if you hadn’t dressed yourself this morning and couldn’t recall what you had picked out.
“A navy blouse, you know, one of those loose button down ones? And a skirt, the tight kind.” Taehyung whimpered as he squeezed a little too hard, a bead of pre come rolling down to meet his fist.
“I could picture me fucking you in that, bent over some desk or podium or something; that sweet little ass of yours out for me.” He growled into the phone, his grip white-knuckled on it. You tried to hide you own noise behind your hand, hoping you didn’t look as disheveled as you felt.
“You’re such a tease, Y/N. Always walking around in little outfits like that just to drive me crazy. You know how many times I’ve almost been caught by fans and fansites with a boner? All because of you.”
Your hands were positively shaking at this point, something you just couldn’t hide even behind the most trained smiles and tightly wound legs.
“That sounds like a personal problem, don’t you think?”
His laugh was dark; bitter. Like morning coffee too hot to taste and certainly too soon to douse with cream and sugar.
“Don’t make me laugh, baby. Otherwise I’ll have to take an impromptu trip to Gwangju to shut that pretty mouth up with my cock.”
You snorted, feeling like you’d gained a little footing in the scenario. You only hoped this meant you had a chance at getting the upper hand.
“Yeah, okay Tae. Whatever you say, good luck hopping up on a train without being flocked by fans and having your hard on photographed in grave detail.” Taehyung shuddered at just the thought of that sort of embarrassment. It was already bad enough that people still managed to get photos of their bodies even when they were fully concealed by clothes.
He growled, letting his other hand let go of his phone to push it against his ear with the aid of the mattress and his shoulder, using its newfound freedom to nudge his shirt up and trail patterns over the sensitive part of his tummy.
“Don’t tempt me,” He spoke low and with intent, lust laced into his words as he tried to stave off his orgasm for a little while longer.
The waver in his voice told you that Taehyung was close, and you felt enough confidence oozing from your fingertips to try a hand at messing with him, since he was the one who started this.
“You’re all talk and no bite, Taehyung. I mean, you’re all for teasing when the others are around and trying to play the ‘will we or won’t we be caught’ game but in reality, you’re just a coward. A coward with a big dick and an even bigger mouth.” Taehyung’s voice got caught in his throat, stunned into a silence from your sharp tongue.
With a hum, you nonchalantly looked over your manicured nails, digging underneath one the longer you awaited for the boy on the other end of the call to respond.
“See? I was right—all bark, and no bite.” You laughed breathlessly into the phone and finally felt some of the unease seep from your body, becoming comfortable with the odd situation at hand.
“You can say that now, Y/N. But be warned, the minute you get back, you won’t be able to walk for a week.” His hips canted forward once more, now out of the little hiccup he’d gotten stuck in from surprise to finally finish what he started. “I’m going to make that ass of yours raw, you’ll be lucky if you can even sit down with I’m done with you.”
You allowed Taehyung to continue, not sure if he’d really cash in on these threats but the thought was enough to have you tightening your legs again. Besides, you figured the poor boy at least deserved to come, if he was this riled up from you alone. And it was true, you two hadn’t messed around in some time; not since Yoongi nearly caught the two of you in the bathroom closest to their practice room.
“How hard would you fuck me?” You spoke in English, taking a prime opportunity to not only test Taehyung’s grasp on the language but it also allowed you to speak so filthily in public without getting side eyed; no one the wiser as you were just the foreigner speaking some other language to someone on their phone, nothing suspicious there.
Taehyung’s pulse raced, breathing following in the quickened pace of his heart as he tried to fist his cock faster. He whimpered softly, almost too quiet for you to hear but you were trained and attuned to those sort of noises, the desperate keens of Taehyung getting closer to his release.
“So hard, baby.” His tongue was heavy, laden with malicious intent as he spoke. “I want to be the one to make you scream, the others would know just what we were doing. I bet they’d get so addicted to those delicious moans of yours, they wouldn’t be able to hold back from touching themselves. But no one else gets to have you, only me.”
“Only you?”
The answer was without hesitation, a scary sort of sureness in his voice that even endless practice couldn’t ascertain.
“Only me.”
“Come, Tae.”
The orgasm hit him like a freight train, his guttural groan so loud you had to cover your phone’s speaker for fear of nearby passersbys hearing it and knowing exactly what was going on. His come shot up onto his shirt, soaking into the fabric.
It took him a little bit to come down from his high, mumbling and hissing from the overstimulation as he continued to drag his hand down his softening length to milk out every last drop.
“Fuck, Y/N. I haven’t come that hard in ages, holy shit.” Taehyung’s breathing was labored and you thanked your lucky stars that you were wearing an ensemble that allowed you to hide the aching arousal in your own underwear. “I think it’s your turn, right?”
You made a noise as you shook your head, straightening your outfit out as you stood from where you sat. Your legs ached from where they were tightly clenched but you were already being beckoned by the head who hired you to translate. The seminar was about to begin.
“Not now, Tae Tae. I have to go speak to like, two dozen people for the fourth time today.”
“Well, I plan on making what I said earlier come true so anticipate it, love.” You giggled at Taehyung’s obviously drowsy voice—he always knocked out right after coming. It was an issue more than anything else since you two never really did much on what would be considered “sleeping surfaces”.
“Of course, whatever you say, pup. Sweet dreams.”
“As long as you’re in them, they will be.”
