Training for Two
Chapter 2. Rules
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Masterlist
Summary: Simon lays the ground rules and shows you around the house.
Warnings: Simon's email etiquette, very mild cursing, beginnings of obsessive behavior.
Tumblr media
Sure enough, Simon had emailed you by Tuesday afternoon. You noticed how... unprofessional it was. Not that he had been rude or obscene, but it was obviously written by someone who never had to write many emails for his career.
here is riley's routine. she likes walks, usually 3 or 4 a day. she eats one scoop in the morning and one at night. she doesn't finish her food all at once, but she'll come back to it. if you're gonna give her more cookies, just two per day. fill water every morning. around the house, if you could just dust and clean up any dog hair, that would be great. let me know if meeting me tomorrow at 0900 for the key works. I ship out thursday. thanks.
Simon.
You chewed your thumb nail, reclining on your couch with a confused expression. Was he irritated with you for some reason? He didn't show it at the interview if he did have any hostile feelings... you reminded yourself that he was a rather gruff man, and maybe that just bled into his written words, too. You rolled your shoulders and started working out your reply.
Hello Simon! Tomorrow works perfect for me, I'll be there by 9 am!
Does Riley have any favorite places she likes to go? Any particular spots or trails she enjoys? Also, are there any rules you have for her, like being on the couch? Is she ok going to the dog park? Lastly, does she take any medications I should be aware of?
See you soon!
You sent the message, sighing and dropping your head back against the arm of the sofa. You were honestly thankful that you'd gotten the job, even if Simon was a rather stiff client. You finally quit your shitty job, and while you did still have babysitting your niece and nephew, you never charged for that - the only time you were "paid" for it was when you took them out somewhere fun, and your sister forced you to accept money for the admission fee.
So this gig fell into your lap at the perfect time. And the fact that you had beat every other person Simon had interviewed made your ego soar. It wouldn't be a bad idea to make a career out of this, you thought.
Your phone dinged - you held it above your face, and saw that Simon had already responded. You sat upright and opened the email.
she only takes aspirin when her leg flares up. no more than twice a day. no favorite trails, we just go around the block a few times. she can sit on the couch, my bed too, but she'll need help getting up. no human food is the only other rule. never took her to a dog park, but if you really want to, that's fine. she's good with other dogs.
Simon.
You frowned. Walking the same block every day, multiple times each day, sounded awful. It wasn't even close to animal neglect, but you couldn't imagine walking the same route every single time. If it didn't drive Riley insane, it certainly would for you.
You read back over the email, your eyes lingering on "if her legs flare up." Simon had never discussed Riley having arthritis with you - and you sincerely hoped that was the reason she had leg pain, and nothing else. You made a mental note to ask him about it tomorrow as you began to write your reply.
Understood. Thanks again!
Tumblr media
"Here's the basement." Simon said, leading you down the stairs and into a dullish room. It had a cheaply-manufactured desk, what appeared to be a dining chair (not matching the dining set upstairs), a stuffed bookshelf, and some cardboard boxes filled with paper. A fan stood in the far corner, and next to it was the washing room. Much like what he had shown you of the rest of the house, it was bland and drab.
You looked around, letting out a polite noise of approval. Truth be told, Simon's life seemed awfully boring to you. Your mother had always told you that military men were always overly practical, in more than just home decor. They never cared much for the environment around them, as long as there was no mold, or anything similar. But you had never expected it to be so brutally true.
You knew he had a life outside of his home - from the way he described it, he was usually deployed more often than he was in his own home country. But you wondered - what did he do for fun, besides watch the telly? Did he have friends, and were they all like him? Any hobbies?
"If for whatever reason y' need to clean up a stain, you can find solution in there." He said, pointing to the washer room. "Other than that, nothin' much to see down 'ere."
You followed him as he trudged back up the stairs. Riley was sat upright on the floor, watching you and Simon move about the house with an observant expression.
"The only other things I'll ask you to do is hoover n' dust when it looks like it needs it." He said, leaning against the kitchen counter. "There really isn't much else t' do; of course, if you do see anything that needs fixin' you can always text me." He rolled his head from side to side, wincing as he worked out a crick in his neck. "Might not answer immediately, but I'll see it."
You nodded, standing in the walkway of the kitchen. Even with him leaning against the counter, muscles hidden under his sweatshirt, he was huge. For a brief moment, you imagined what he looked like on the field, dressed in his uniform and holding a gun - but you quickly shooed the thought from your mind before it had the chance to latch on and fester. "Gotcha. And just so I know, do you let Riley sleep with you?"
Simon paused in confusion before he responded. "Come again?"
"Like- you know, if I crash on the couch, is she allowed up with me?" You said, shifting your weight. You couldn't quite tell if Simon was irked by your question, or if he was genuinely confused.
He paused again. "Uh, yea, that's fine. If y' don't mind waking up covered in 'er slobber."
You laughed. "Nah, I'm used to it. A little drool never bothered me. Although, if I do need to wash up, am I alright to use the shower? Or would you rather I use my own back at my flat?"
Suddenly, it clicked in Simon's head. You were planning on sleeping at his house.
He had assumed you would just stop by for walks and meals - he didn't expect you to actually live here while he was gone, and he wasn't sure how it made him feel. He'd never had anyone else spend the night. Hell, no one ever visited, besides the rare occasions of the rest of the 141 stopping by. Even then, they never stayed for longer than a conversation or two.
But, once he took a second to think about it, he realized it might be better if you did stay - at least, while he was on missions. Riley would be bored out of her mind if she was alone that long, especially after spending the past several weeks with Simon constantly there. It would be good for someone to be there when he wasn't, and you seemed like you would be the best person for that, of course.
"Sure, 's fine." He said, rubbing the back of his head. "Just don't touch my shit in there."
"Don't worry about that..." You said quietly, "catch me dead and cold before I touch a 3-in-1 anything."
He chuckled and rolled his eyes. It was refreshing that you could handle his gruffness - most people treated him like a landmine, never wanting to say the wrong thing and set him off. You seemed to have taken life by the horns, like you weren't afraid to bite back at someone. He wondered if that was all for show, or if you really would snap back if he was to test you...
He pushed himself off the counter and reached into the drawer behind him, pulling out a spare key. He walked over to you and held it out. You were just about to take it, when he suddenly yanked it back.
You faltered. "Sorry...?"
"You lose this key..." Simon began lowly, "n' I'll frame you for murder. Understood?"
You gaped, mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He didn't really mean that... did he? You waited for him to laugh and say he was just joking... but he never did. His eyes bored into yours so intensely, making you shiver, as he waited for you to answer.
"Y-yes, sir. Understood." You said, voice wavering a bit.
He grunted in satisfaction, then handed you the key. You let out the breath you had been holding, then cautiously took the key, before immediately attaching it to your lanyard. You didn't want to take any chances at losing it - not after Simon's threat. You took a deep breath and smiled at him, trying to dust the exchange off of your shoulders.
"You can come 'round tomorrow after o' nine hundred, I'll be out by then." He said, turning sideways to moce past you and heading towards the door. You followed behind and rubbed Riley's head when you passed her; she let out a contented sound.
"Feel free t' use the kitchen if you'll be stayin' overnight." He opened the door for you and leaned against it.
"Will do, thank you!" You chirped, hovering on the landing outside of his house, right were you were two days ago. "Thank you for showing me around - good luck on your- mission- deployment, thingamajig!"
He huffed. "Promise I will, luv."
Your spine tingled in response to his comment. Get it together, don't get your knickers in a twist over a client. You thought. You straightened your posture and cleared your throat.
"Well, see you around!" You said with a smile, then hopped down the steps to your car.
Simon waved, taking a moment to watch you pull out of his driveway. He shut the door and leaned back against it, exhaling slowly through his nostrils.
He was an observant man - he had to be, with his occupation. Your reaction to being called "luv" didn't fly over his head. And it's not like Simon didn't know the effect he had on women... he knew how he looked, how he presented himself, and he saw the reactions it got him.
But with you, something felt different. He saw your reaction, and a part of him wanted to chase after it. To see what you would do if he continued to apply pressure to your weak spots. Would you blush? Would you call him out? Would you drop the gig altogether?
He thought about how easily the word "sir" had rolled off of your tongue. He thought about how you would look, all tuckered out on his couch, donned in whatever pajamas you decided to wear, your face peaceful and expression soft as you slept - he imagined you in his shower, the room filled with warm steam and the scent of your shampoo, water hitting your skin as you-
Riley barked, making Simon jolt where he stood. She stared at him, ears turned to the side as she whined. She could always tell when he began to dissociate, and knew just as much as he did that it wasn't a good sign.
Simon sighed, running a hand down his face. "Get it together, fuckin' creep." He muttered to himself. "I need a bloody hobby, f' Christ's sake..."
He blamed it on the upcoming mission. He would typically stress about it beforehand, and if there was anything else that could occupy his mind, he would fixate on it. Right now, unfortunately, you were the victim. But he buried it deep down into his subconscious - it wasn't fair to you.
He pushed himself off of the door and headed towards the washroom, adjusting his crotch as he went. He figured he should at least tidy it up a bit, since you would be using it. The only other people who had been in there were Johnny and Captain Price, and of course, they never cared if there were trimmers on the counter, or if the mirror had splotches from toothpaste residue.
Hopefully, he'd forget all about you - at least, while he was on the mission.

If Taylor Swift Had Endorsed Donald Trump
Democrats would scorn her business savvy, cap her ticket prices, and fret over her huge carbon footprint.
Wall Street Journal
By Allysia Finley
Forbes estimates Taylor Swift’s net worth at $1.3 billion. Despite her liberal leanings, the singer-songwriter has amassed her wealth the old-fashioned way: through hard work, talent and business savvy. Her endorsement of Kamala Harris last week is rich considering she owes her success to the capitalist system the vice president wants to tear down.
“The way I see it, fans view music the way they view their relationships,” Ms. Swift wrote in a 2014 piece for the Journal. “Some music is just for fun, a passing fling. . . . Some songs and albums represent seasons of our lives, like relationships that we hold dear in our memories but had their time and place in the past. However, some artists will be like finding ‘the one.’ ” She has become “the one” for hundreds of millions of fans worldwide with lyrics that chronicle relationship woes women commonly experience.
Ms. Swift took advantage of her ardent fan base in 2014 by removing her catalog from Spotify in a bid for higher royalties. “Valuable things should be paid for. It’s my opinion that music should not be free,” she explained. “My hope for the future, not just in the music industry, but in every young girl I meet, . . . is that they all realize their worth and ask for it.”
She also criticized Apple Music for not paying artists during the streaming service’s free trial, prompting the company to change its policy. As she jeers in a hit song, “Who’s afraid of little old me?” Apparently, Big Tech companies.
Last year she reportedly raked in $200 million from streaming royalties on top of the estimated $15.8 million she grossed per performance during her recent “Eras” tour. Some fans have shelled out thousands of dollars on the resale market to see Ms. Swift perform. Americans have even traveled to Europe when they couldn’t get tickets in the U.S.
Her fan base may be more loyal and enthusiastic than Donald Trump’s. JD Vance scoffed at the idea that the star’s endorsement of Ms. Harris could influence the outcome of the election. The “billionaire celebrity,” he said, is “fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans.” Maybe, but she certainly taps into the problems of young women.
Democrats hope to use Ms. Swift’s endorsement to drive them to the polls. But it isn’t difficult to imagine what the left would be saying about her had she endorsed the Republican antihero. It might go something like this:
The billionaire has gotten rich by ripping off fans, avoiding taxes and harming competitors. Time for the government to break her up. Unlike rival artists, Ms. Swift writes, performs and owns her compositions. This vertical integration allows her to charge exorbitant royalties and ticket prices.
Tickets for her “Eras” tour on average cost about $240. That’s merely the price for admission—not including food, drink or Swiftie swag. VIP passes that include memorabilia go for $899. How dare she make young women choose between paying for groceries or rent and going to a concert.
The Federal Trade Commission must cap Ms. Swift’s ticket prices at a reasonable price—say, $20—and ban her junk fees. Concertgoers shouldn’t have to pay $65 for an “I Love You It’s Ruining My Life” sweatshirt.
Her romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce also unfairly boosts their star power, letting them charge more for endorsements. As Ms. Swift writes in one song, “two is better than one.” Mr. Kelce reportedly signed a $100 million podcast deal with Amazon’s Wonderly. By breaking up the couple, the government could reduce their royalties and ticket prices.
Ms. Swift, the self-described “mastermind,” also dodges taxes on her “full income,” which includes some $125 million in real estate and a music catalog worth an estimated $600 million. “They said I was a cheat, I guess it must be true,” Ms. Swift acknowledges in her song “Florida!!!”
Under the Biden-Harris administration’s proposed billionaire’s tax, she would have to pay a 25% levy on the $1 billion increase in her fortune since 2017. But that isn’t enough. Ms. Swift should also have to pay taxes on the appreciating value of her “name, image and likeness,” which the Internal Revenue Service considers an asset.
How much is her brand worth? Easily billions. She might say, as she does in a song, that her “reputation has never been worse.” True, Miss Americana’s image took a hit after reports that her private-jet travel in 2022 emitted 576 times as much CO2 as the average American in a year. When Ms. Swift sings, “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me,” she’s correct. She and her fat-cat friends are what’s wrong with America.
Appeared in the September 16, 2024, print edition as 'If Taylor Swift Had Endorsed Donald Trump'.

Feeling Indigo (how ‘bout you?)
tw: cursing, (fake) blood, scenes from a haunted house, insta love
blood covered the walls, handprints dance up and down the walls without uniform, some scrape the wall as if it was dragged.
and after two weeks of working until four in the morning, chasing the sun up and watching the moon dance up slowly, slowly, slowly up the horizon-you we’re proud of it. thought it almost looked realistic-if you titled your head just right.
if it weren’t for the thick clumps that hung in the middle, giving away the corn syrup, with the dark red lighting it almost would’ve passed for real blood- or at least you’d tell yourself that.
look, you weren’t expecting much but your club out it together, trying to raise money for new equipment you all so desperately needed. so far it’s been a lot of middle schoolers-happily paying the $3 admission fee (mostly in spare change) and coming out genuinely scared-people in your grade have been leaving with the rolls and huffs about how you could’ve at least tried to make it scary-
“Hasan,” someone in a small group huffs, “It’s by the college, how scary could it be?”
he’s tall, all elbows and sharp edges, but he’s trying desperately to make himself smaller, clinging to the shirt of the guy in front of him like a lost child.
his voice is low when he speaks, all gravel, like he doesn’t want you to hear; “i’m not fuckin’ scared, dude. I just think haunted houses are fuckin’ stupid.”
his eyes snap to you when you go to tear his ticket, his hands practically shaking when you take it: “watch out, a group of third graders just made it through.”
you’re teasing, your voice is light but instead of looking relieved, he looks more stressed.
“that’s arguably even fuckin’ worse, dude.”
you snort before you can help yourself: “Speak to it. how is that somehow more horrible?”
he looks over his shoulder like it’s a secret before coming in close to you. you can practically feel his lips against your ears, his hot breath-
“Because kids fuckin’ suck,” he says, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world, “And their single job is to torment me-“
“is it hard always being the victim?”
“or,” Hasan doesn’t miss a beat, ignoring your comment, “Lurking in corners to laugh!”
You snort.
“Three dollars,” you hold your hand out, “I feel bad charging you, like kicking a puppy.”
“So does that mean it’s free?”
his smirk is almost blinding.
“Nah,” You shake your head, remembering the supplies that’s needed, “If anything, you should owe me double-“
“Look,” Hasan huffs, one hand digging in his pocket as his friends roll their eyes and crane their neck every time a yell is heard from inside, “If you think you’re so brave, you come in with me too.”
“Is this your shitty way of asking me out?”
He snorts, his head practically falls back.
“You wish,” acting like you don’t see how bright pink his face is and how his friends elbow one another. “Just trying to get you to admit you aren’t as brave as you’re acting. A real killer could be hiding-"
One of his friends, you think his name is Anthony, opens his mouth: "Uh, Hasan-"
And you don't want Anthony to blow your cover, so immediately, you're talking to shut him up.
"Fine. I'll go," You nod, "But If I don't scream, you pay us $40."
"And if you get scared?"
You snort, "I'll give you $40?"
He smirks, bites back the part that wants to offer a date- "Sure."
"Deal."
He offers his hand and you roll your eyes, but obey, meeting his hand to shake it mid-air.
The door to the room creaks open (thanks to you) and William, the art major, who's make up only looks good in the dark, "Welcome. The doctor will see you now."
William practiced that line for days, you walked into the room and he'd be cross legged in front of a mirror propped up against the wall, and you walked in on it many times, him trying new voices out-louder and deeper, trying to get his voice as low as possible.
You turn to Hasan, about to make a joke but he actually looks scared, is still trying to make himself smaller.
"Come on."
And before you can stop yourself, your lacing your fingers into his, and pulling him in.
The first room is a hospital and while it's not the best-you'd admit it, you can still be proud of it.
Annie, the political science major from across your hall, stays strapped in a bed, screaming bloody murder, the make up runs down her face and stains the outfit she wears-if hasan got closer, he'd see how shitty the make up looks.
You look at him, ready for him to finally be laughing, or rolling his eyes, but he's still half behind you
it's hard to hear you. Hasan has to strain, has to hunch his shoulders and offer his ear for you to be heard, and you can still feel his hand shaking in yours.
"That's just Annie," You finally say, knowing you'll win this bet, "She's a poly sci major."
He still doesn't seem sure as you lead into the next room, someone facing the wall, another pacing-
Before you can warn him, Scott comes behind him: "Come play with us."
Hasan lets out a scream that makes you almost feel bad, his friends long gone. It's a smaller haunted house-three rooms, and you're almost there, almost about to warn him-
look, you set this up but it doesn't mean your friends aren't dicks.
you turn around and your face to face with a clown, white make up on their face, lipstick smeared all over-
if you had been prepared for it, it wouldn't have been scary, but he got you last second-and the scream ripped through you.
"Fucker." You fight the urge to chase after him, don't want to give it away yet that this is your baby, your masterplan-especially since you ended up screaming-
"Well."
His smirk says it all as you're greeted by sunlight finally.
"I don't want to hear it."
He continues anyways.
“So, i guess i win.”
you roll your eyes, “You screamed the entire time, that hardly feels like winning-“
“So, $40?”
You make the move for your wallet, biting your lip to refrain from telling him this is your entire money for the next two weeks when his hand is over yours-
“Let me take you out,” he says instead, “Loser buys the other a coffee, yeah?”
your heart beats in your ears.
“I don’t drink coffee.”
“Jesus christ, dude.” he laughs, “are you always this difficult? fine. Buys a beer? or a tea?”
“hmm-“
“Let me take you out.”
and he says it so low, like he’s embarrassed that he went through all that for this, but he’s squirming in his spot, cranning his neck.
“Fine. The nest, 6pm. don’t be late.”
and you turn on your heels before he can realize how red your face is or how excited you are.

This is a comment I intended to post on Z/P’s most recent video, but they’re locking down their comments now to manual approval, and my comment would’ve been censored anyway. Consider this my refutation of the points in their video:
Four points.
Spawn is a 24 year old adult. What they choose to do with the money their biological mother left them is THEIR business. Maybe you think they were blowing it on frivolous things, but it’s not your place to dictate how they should spend their money. Nevermind the fact that you charged them rent already.
When Spawn left your household, they were  5’1” and 80lbs. This piece of info was somehow missing from your video (unless it’ll be in part 2, which I’m skeptical of). At best you were negligent of your child’s health. At worst, you were actively starving them.
The way you point out how Spawn’s roommate has a “prestigious job” and how it would be a real shame if KiwiFarms went after them is absolutely disgusting. How is that specific detail relevant at all? The roommate has nothing to do with this fiasco. You’re all but prompting the KF mob with personally identifiable info to go after Spawn and their roommate. I don’t know how the hell you thought this made y’all look good.
You say that you consulted 3 lawyers, and that they say you have a credible case of defamation against Spawn, one which you will bring to them if they don’t stop talking about you. I call bullshit on this for two reasons. This feels like an attempt to intimidate Spawn into silence more than anything (Spawn deleting their blog speaks to that). First off, if you’re going to sue for damages related to losing your job, remember that you’re the one who made the decision to pick your social media presence over your job. That was on you, you could’ve kept your job (unless there’s something you’re not telling us). Second, I sincerely doubt you have the funds to keep a lawyer on retainer and to bring this lawsuit to fruition. Not to be mean, but let’s keep it real, by your own admission y’all weren’t exactly big ballers before, and now your household doesn’t have an income (unless Zena has a well paying job I’m not aware of). Looking online reveals that the average defamation lawsuit costs $20,000 - $50,000. Considering the sprinklings of info you’ve dispensed about your finances over the years I’ve been watching your channel, I doubt you have that kind of cheese to throw around. And even if you do manage to find enough standing to successfully sue your child (which just *screams* loving parent), what exactly do you hope to win? Spawn is probably financially destitute. What, you want the last $13k of that trust fund money? Come on, be real. See, this is why I don’t think y’all actually reached out to a lawyer, because any lawyer worth their salt would tell you this isn’t a case worth pursuing. Any damages you can extract from a disabled 24-year old wouldn’t even come close to covering the legal fees. It won’t get you your job back either; you willingly chose to leave, and if you felt coerced, you’d go after your employer for wrongful termination. This is an unserious legal threat in my opinion; you’re afraid that Spawn will keep singing like a canary so you want them to keep quiet.

Bishop Castle - June 2023 Jim Bishop bought the land this “castle” stands on when he was only twelve years old. He built a small stone cabin there in his early twenties. Someone told him it looked like he was building a castle… so he did. His family had run an ornamental iron business for generations. He continued to make his living creating ornamental iron and he used his skills to create this huge castle-like thing. No one is sure whether he ever intended to live in it, but he continued working on it for fifty years until his death. He had his own sawmill to cut the beams and he hauled stone from all over his land and elsewhere. Every stone was set in place by hand. People starting stopping by to see it, so he put up a donation box. He never charged an admission fee and even put it in his will that no admission should ever by charged. Kathy couldn’t go inside. In fact, if it weren’t for a bunch of Veterans for Veterans bikers, she wouldn’t have even make it up the hill to the courtyard. I am posting nine images of the castle. The dragon actually breathes fire (a burner from a hot air balloon), but it didn’t while we were there. MWM

After five weeks of testimony that included nearly 40 witnesses, more than 100 secret recordings, two COVID-related delays and about 16 hours of closing arguments, the jury in the historic corruption trial of former Chicago Ald. Edward Burke is expected to finally begin deliberating the case on Monday.
Before the jury of nine women and three men retires to the jury room, however, they must first be instructed on the law by U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall, who will read aloud about 350 pages of jury instructions compiled by both sides over the past several weeks.
For the record, that’s longer than the 310 pages of Burke’s 1996 book “Inside the Wigwam,” a history of national political conventions held in Chicago, which was referenced several times during the trial.
Once the jury begins deliberating, they’ll elect a foreperson and go about sorting through the 19 counts in the case, which include 14 counts against Burke and a combination of other charges involving his two co-defendants, longtime ward aide Peter Andrews Jr. and real estate developer Charles Cui.
Though tedious, the legal instructions will be crucial in determining how the panel reaches its verdict, including making findings on everything from what constitutes official misconduct to whether Burke and his co-defendants acted “knowingly” when committing certain acts.
After three days of closing arguments wrapped last week, U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall sent the jury home for the weekend. With Christmas week looming, Kendall told the panel they should not feel rushed in their discussions, particularly after a six-week trial, so if there is no verdict by Friday, they would not come back until after the New Year.
“I don’t want you to think I’m going to be Scrooge if you want to take a long time,” the judge said. “I’m not going to make you sit Christmas week. I don’t want anybody to be stressed that you can’t be with your families.”
Burke, 79, who served 54 years as alderman before leaving the City Council in May, is charged with 14 counts including racketeering, federal program bribery, attempted extortion, conspiracy to commit extortion and using interstate commerce to facilitate an unlawful activity.
Andrews, 74, is charged with one count of attempted extortion, one count of conspiracy to commit extortion, two counts of using interstate commerce to facilitate an unlawful activity and one count of making a false statement to the FBI.
Cui, 52, is facing counts of federal program bribery, using interstate commerce to facilitate an unlawful activity and making false statements to the FBI.
The racketeering charge alleges Burke used his significant City Hall power to try to get business for his private law firm from developers, including the New York-based team tackling the $600 million renovation of the Old Post Office.
The indictment alleges Burke and Andrews conspired to extort the Texas-based owners of a Burger King in his Southwest Side 14th Ward, and in a separate scheme, Cui is accused of hiring Burke’s firm, Klafter & Burke, because he was desperate to win a pole sign permit for a Binny’s Beverage Depot in Portage Park.
Burke is also accused of threatening to block an admission fee increase at the Field Museum to retaliate against officials who failed to give a paid internship to a daughter of one of his longtime City Council allies.
At heart of the case were more dozens of wiretapped phone calls and secretly recorded meetings made by Daniel Solis, the former 25th Ward alderman who turned FBI mole after being confronted in 2016 with his own wrongdoing.
In closing arguments last week, prosecutors put up on large video screens a series of now-notorious statements made by Burke on the recordings. Among them: “The cash register has not rung yet,” “They can go (expletive) themselves,” and “Did we land the tuna?”
Assistant U.S Attorney Sarah Streicker told the jury that Burke’s words were their ticket into his real frame of mind.
Burke’s attorneys, meanwhile, argued that the entire case is the product of overzealous government agents and their puppet, Solis, whom even prosecutors did not trust enough to put on the witness stand themselves. Instead, he was called by the defense and grilled about his motivations.
“The fact alone that they didn’t call Danny Solis in their case creates a reasonable doubt,” Burke attorney Joseph Duffy said. “Why did we have to bring Danny Solis in here? That should give you pause, the fact that they ran an investigation on Mr. Burke for 30 months with a star witness Danny Solis undercover and they didn’t have the decency to bring him here.”

pride planning orgs will really station security at each bottleneck-ass entrance to confiscate water from people coming in, charge $4* each for bottles of water (that they run out of even despite the price-gouging) at their crowded outdoor festival in 90F+ weather with humidity levels out the ass, be shocked-pikachu baffled when dozens of attendees keel over from heat sickness, and then whine about the costs of having to call every EMT in a 25-mile radius in their social media posts about why they're not having a festival the following year.
This is a post about Houston Pride 365. Your local org can and should do better.
-
*i don't actually know if it was literally $4 or not but considering how many people in our community are broke, largely due to how rare it is for us to have any financial stability due to familial rejection and widespread hiring discrimination against visibly queer people, charging any amount for water could still be cost-prohibitive to attendees. Especially at an event that recently introduced an admission fee (??? ?? ???? ??? ?? ? ? ?!)

Mik, Madi and Hanan chat and plan for a slice of happiness post doppelgängers trauma.
@stranded-mik @madibyrd
Mik wandered over to one of the bonfires, eager for some easy conversation and an extra warm night. At least the glowing sand made it easy for him to move around at night, like a neon highway from their tent to the main settlement. Mik slipped into an easy jog as he got nearer and nearer, spotting two familiar figures near the fire.
"Hey, if it isn't my favourite ladies," Mik grinned as he approached. "Little jungle reunion, huh? The dream team!" he beamed, looking around to see if Harry was lingering around as well. No sign of her, probably for the best. He offered out his fist to the ladies to tap, if they wanted. He would make the fistbump take off on this damn island.
Mik looked between the two of them, wondering too late whether he was interupting them. If maybe he was shooting himself in the wing. "Unless... I can leave if you two are..." Mik looked between them suggestively, proudly, as if he was the minister asking them to take their vows.
Hanan had taken to sitting out each night, either chatting to people over dinner or simply listening to their stories. Now more so than ever she wanted the company of others to help blitz the time away. Madi was easy to talk to, and Hanan didn't necessarily feel the impetus to be overly polite.
In-fact just before they were interrupted she'd been asking Madi, 'how she was diddly doing?' but the question fell to the wayside as a bright, and welcome face loomed. Hanan immediately leapt at the chance to fistbump Mik. "Hey! No totally chill you can come sit with us."
"How is everyone? Post la jungle drama?" Hanan scooted over so there was space for Mik to plop himself down, and turned so she could sit with her legs crossed and face them both. "The sand is real cool huh? I'm obsessed it's the coolest thing to happen out of all of this!" They had to look for silver linings.
Madi wasn't really one to sit out by the fire where a lot of people gathered just to hang out and chat with them - she was more comfortable with the people she was close with or just spending the night alone. But she was trying to change that so when she found Hanan, she decided to stay out.
They already interacted before, was in the jungle together, so there was a certain kind of comfortable but also new since they really didn't know each other. "I'm doing--" she started to reply to Hanan when Mik appeared.
Madi quickly turned all red at his words. "What? No, you can join, there's nothing-- nothing like that." She was absolutely not looking at either of them now. "I'm-- doing okay, I guess. Been better before, but-- getting there. What about you guys" And then she added, "The sand is kinda new, not really sure how I feel about it yet."
So apparently Mik could join in with them. He sat down in the place Hanan cleared. Hanan seemed very cool about it, while Madi turned red like a cute cherry tomato. He saw her. A little flustered around Hanan. He'd have to corner her alone later and ask her whether she needed any help with wooing Hanan. "Great, it sounds like we're all doing well," Mik smoothly said, choosing to live and believe that tonight. He'd been morbid enough about what had happened. So much so he neatly ignored that Madi had been better, and that Hanan hadn't answered.
"I think the sand is pretty cool, yeah. It makes me feel like we should be throwing an island moon party every night!" Mik grinned, busting out some chill dance moves. He nudged Madi's shoulder, laughing at himself. "You guys ever go to Thailand? The moon parties sure were something. What do you guys think? We could charge admission fees. Like a coconut per entry?"
Between Mik’s impending arrival, which then turned into a bright and bubbly golden ray of light, and Madi’s quiet admission of being okay but not quite. Hanan was lost. She blinked between them both feeling a little bamboozled and overdosed as Mik shifted in the sand to get comfortable and Hanan felt every grain do a little dance.
Mik had decided for her that she was okay, which was fine cause honestly Hanan didn’t really fancy opening that topic up! “No, wait what’s a moon party?” She leant forwards, wrapping her hands about her ankles not sure but eager regardless. Though she’d never really been one for parties. “Maybe we need a distraction?”
“I bet we could bottle up the sand! Turn it into island-friendly fairy lights? I uh, I don’t know how we’d get the bottles though.” Hanan pursed her lips, losing her train of thought to this one specific silly unimportant detail.
At least Mik didn't press the thing further and Madi felt like she could relax a bit. That was what she wanted - the chance to relax and hang out with people, make some friends. They were already bonded by the Labyrinth and both of them seemed great and fun, just in their own different ways.
"Never been to Thailand before. Never really been outside of the States before getting here, actually," Madi admitted. "But yeah, what is a moon part?" There was something about miners that Madi knew, something about miners' bare backsides up in shafts being called something moon related, but this couldn't just be like that, a naked party, right?
"The bottling up is a good idea, though yeah, not a lot of bottles anymore. I was wondering, though if maybe... I don't know, what if we could make glass out of this sand. Would the glass glow as well? Or it would be just a simple glass?"
The dream team was united! Mik beamed happily, grateful for the good vibes that were already brewing up between the three of them. "A moon party is like, these raves they host on Thailand on the beach during a full moon, yeah? I want you to picture like sparklers, glowsticks, fairylights, fire skipping ropes, walking on coals. Like, we've got the beach, we've got the moon..." Mik waggled his shoulders, all big ideas and never one to say no to a party. If he didn't mention the shitload of E and coke he had at his last moon party, or the buckets of alcohol that other people tended to gorge themselves on, who could blame him.
"Hey, hey, hey..." Mik started, as Hanan and Madi rapid fired off two great ideas after one another. "Our own moon party yeah. Hanan, I love the thoughts of glowing sand fairylights. And Madi..." Mik clapped his arm around her shoulder, squeezing her tight as he barked out a cheerful laugh. "You know I run the forge, yeah?" He didn't know that melted sand formed glass, but if she said it did, he'd give it a shot. "We should try it," he suggested, spotting an empty coconut shell. He let go of Madi and grabbed it, scooping it full of sand. "Let's go ladies!" he grinned.
“Glowing glass…” Hanan echoed, the thought was super exciting. Would it be reminiscent of radium glassware? She’d only discovered that people had done that fairly recently. Which had inspired an all-night binge consuming everything she could come across for the neon green goblets. “Wait you run the forge Mik? That’s super cool! Did you do smithing before you got here?” Which, given he was from the same era she was meant he was even nerdier than she thought.
“I’ve been making little coconut sugar treats! Could totally make some moon shaped? Keep up with the theme.” That the sort of thing Mik was thinking of for their party? More direct to Madi she asked, “whereabouts in the states where you from? I totally get it. I don’t think I would’ve ever left either if hadn’t have needed to for comps.” That and family, but it wasn’t worth delving into that here and now.
Hanan put a hand to Mik’s shoulder. “Okay, so like maybe we do a test run? Melt the sand down and see if it still glows? This could be so, so cool! Imagine glowing cups for everyone to drink juice out of. Better yet think of the creative opportunities! I never watched that glass Netflix show but someone who’s totally more into all the cool funky art stuff could make some totally cool sculptures.”
Okay, so it wasn't a naked party, that was a win, that was good. And really, it could be fun. Fun was what she needed. Granted, at parties usually alcohol came out, but there was a shortage and anyway, she could stay away. Hopefully.
"Oh, I'm from Boston, what about you? Did you move around a lot?" she asked back from Hanan. She wasn't quite sure what comps were, but that wasn't really the point hopefully.
And then Mik was there, announcing he was running the forge and Madi really has been gone from the farm a long time because she had no idea Mik was running the forge. But she was glad to not focus on that, instead focus on the plans. "I don't know much about glass making either, I just know it has to happen at a really high heat. But yeah, we have a forger in our midst, we should do tests and see what we can make happen. It could be fun and soooo pretty. Not that this place needs more things to be pretty, it's already gorgeous, it's just-- you know what I mean. It could be really cool."
Mik beamed as Madi called him the forger, that title enough to keep the dream of glowy glass to decorate the festival alive. "That's right ladies, you're talking to the owner-operator of the Hot and Hard forge right here," Mik said with all the pomp and pride of a peacock, jutting his thumbs into his chest. "Darling, you think I ever did something as butch as forging out in the real world?" Mik teased Hanan in his most camp voice, winking at her. "That's the good thing about this place, you know? Get to reinvent yourself, do all sorts of new things." It was a silver lining Mik clung to.
He let the ladies do their little yankie-doodle networking as they walked to the forge, his favourite pet project now that BeachFit was on a hiatus. Mik pulled out the ceramic pot he used for melting metal and started to stack the firepit with wood. "I like the thought of melting shit and seeing what happens, yeah?" Mik asked the women, pulling out his rather newly acquired lighter and getting the fire going. "The way I see it, Madi, you help me make the fire burn real hot, yeah? Hanan, do you think you could like, control the melted glass?" It was a question that had been rattling around Mik's head, whether he could rope in an earth-attuned to help with the metal shaping. "Like, sand is earth, right? And this is just going to be hot, sticky sand?"
Even Hanan couldn't help but giggle at Mik's attempt at an ever so camp suggestion over the forge. "Hey! I don't really know what you did or didn't do." Though she had an inkling because she'd listened to a podcast about him. She turned to Madi, her smile flowing into something a little warmer and less over exaggerated. "Oh! Boulder, sorta technically." If it was a question of where she'd grown up, which usually was what people wanted to know. Place of birth wasn't so-so exciting when she'd scarcely ever spent time there.
"I have nooo idea if I can control the sand but hey! It's worth a shot isn't it? I'm still so new to everything, every time I think I'm making improvements something totally unexpected happens!" Hanan smiled, happy either way to help out though she imagined Mik and Madi would be more in tune with the forge. The real dream team.

MBA colleges in Mumbai without CAT
In India, one of the most well-liked post-graduate programs is the MBA. It carries a bag full of possibilities to further your profession—numerous prestigious management schools in India and beyond offer a two-year program.
The CAT test is the first thing that comes to mind when someone discusses the best MBA programs in India. For admission to more than 1,000 B-schools and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMCAT) conducts the Common Aptitude Exam (CAT), a management aptitude exam. Most Indian business schools provide preference to applicants who want to sit for competitive tests like CAT, MAT, XAT, etc.
Is it possible to get an MBA admission in Mumbai without a CAT, though? The answer is yes! A handful of prestigious B-schools moreover provide direct MBA admissions devoid of the CAT. Many MBA colleges provide admission without the need for an entrance test; instead, they admit students directly to their MBA programs based on their various university entrance examinations, personal interviews, or the candidate's performance on the prior qualifying exam. However, compared to government-owned institutes, private institutes typically charge higher fees.
Eligibility Criteria for Direct Admission without CAT
The following are the minimal requirements for admission to the prestigious MBA colleges in Mumbai that do not need a CAT exam:
Different colleges may have different requirements for the minimum score on the UG level test, but to graduate, a student must have received at least a 50% to 65% aggregate score.
The overall score for the reserved category must be at least 45%.
Other competitive test scores from exams like XAT, MAT, GMAT, NMAT, ATMA, SNAP, etc. are accepted by some institutions.
Things to Consider Before Choosing to Apply for Direct Admission in MBA Colleges in Mumbai Without the CAT Exam
Candidates should consider the following before choosing to pursue an MBA in India without a CAT:
Create and keep track of the MBA schools you would like to be admitted to. In addition to the institutes' names, candidates need to consider the fees, placement cell, professors, and other aspects of the institution.
The AICTE or Universities Grant Commission must accredit the college.
Students should attempt to stay away from brokers and consultants and instead get in touch with the college directly if they want to pursue an MBA without a CAT in India.
Candidates who approach universities or colleges directly will receive clear and comprehensive information about the course and the campus, preventing them from being misled. It is required of candidates to visit the college campus to inspect the amenities and other infrastructure.
Look into the specializations that the universities provide. Prospective MBA students should consider their desired area of specialty and whether the college of their choice offers it.
Direct Admission with Management Quota to Top MBA Colleges in Mumbai
