Yeah he's a loser so the first female to hit him up is probably going to take his heart. I think instead of being touchy like Jinseo, I feel like he would appreciate a girl who is more of a caring figure (cause of his daddy...oops) and does acts of service. You would need to give him some time, and also get to know him and his past without prying too much into it. I feel like you patching him up after he gets into fights would be kinda cute, and it gives that extra boost for him to fall for you.

Hella competition though, but if you get there first I think you have a shot. What is missing to him is reassurance, and if you make it loud and clear that the person you like is him, he'll be pretty satisfied. I really don't know why, but I feel like Eunsung would be into a girl with a mean demeanor but a soft heart. Like I could imagine him with an s/o who is rich and spoiled but secretly has good morals. Like with his whole "sibling" backstory (if the author doesn't start dropping more hints I'm literally gonna have to write it myself), he would probably be a bit more sensitive with topics regarding family and life. So if his hard-headed s/o takes care of stray kittens and donates to/volunteers at local orphanages, he'd definitely fall.

Another thing I would say is loyalty. I don't know if he's being forced to work for the council due to his sibling, but he knows that he needs it to survive. If his s/o is spoiled but knows when to be sophisticated and get shit done, I think that's a pretty solidifying factor. He definitely takes interests in people that remind him of himself.

No but imagine this: heiress who lavishly spends her money and always comes dressed up in full Chanel and bedazzled in Cartier rings. She requests gifts from him every other day and gets upset when he doesn't greet her with roses. But when she goes shopping she buys them matching designer outfits and stocks up his closet and fridge with the highest quality goods. Not only that, but also a spitfire, and she is b r a t t y .

Sometimes when she gets worked up she starts sticking her tongue out at Sunjae and just doing things that piss him off in general. Four Of Our Books Are Now Audiobooks, Or So I Hear

Four of our books are finally up as audiobooks! Do you hear me?

I know what you're thinking: "But Mark, you can't afford to engineer an audiobook!"

What's that? You're actually thinking, "I wonder if white socks have to be dyed, or if colored socks have to be bleached?" Fine. But just the same, they're up on that audiobook powerhouse, Audible.com:

The books, not the socks. I guess the socks would be in the category of Sole Music.

Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing, in one of those cases of "We should have seen it coming", is offering authors a chance to use Virtual Voice to make their works into audiobooks. I was contacted to beta the service, as was, I suspect, every other writer on Amazon. But audiobooks have become a big thing, and I can't afford a service, or the equipment and time to do it myself.

The first one I tried was Storm Chaser. I found the process easy, and the voice acceptable. It is a virtual voice; the term "virtual" has become a dirty word among artists, but this one isn't stealing from someone to make something. Anyone interested in trying it should read a sample first, to see if they're okay with the voice.

Pay no attention to the voice behind that book!

The second I converted was The No-Campfire Girls. Since the book is almost entirely from the POV of a teenage girl, I chose a female narrator for that one. The price I used for all four books is $3.99, which is low for an audiobook but within reason. Amazon's "free" service gets a cut of that, of course.

Seriously, there's no one there. You're imaging those legs.

The other two are my straight humor books, Slightly Off the Mark and More Slightly Off the Mark. (This is as opposed to books like Hoosier Hysterical, which are a mix of humor and other things. But they're still funny. Trust me.)

I'd love for these books to get popular enough to generate a series--I have lots of columns to go.

It was only, oh, this week that I found out Audible is now an Amazon owned service, so ... yay!

Of our other books, some I can't get converted to audio right now due to technical problems, which we're working on. Some I just don't think would work as audiobooks. Images of America: Albion and Noble County is a photo-heavy book, and I'm not sure I could do this without permission of its traditional publisher, anyway. Smoky Days and Sleepless Nights is a toss-up, but being a local history book on a niche subject, I'm not sure there's any point in trying.

Listen to a sample and let me know what you think. If it works, it's a great chance to expand our audience. If it doesn't ... well, all it took was a little time out of my life when I would have been watching "Resident Alien".

My doomer phase is largely over by now.

I used to doomscroll endlessly on r/collapse.

I was enamoured by arctic-news.blogspot.com, a site which has baselessly claimed for over a decade that within four years, global temperatures will rise up to 18°C.

I cried at the Arctic death spiral.

I refreshed the NSIDC's charts daily, fearing that descending line would plummet below the 2012 threshold.

I watched carbon clocks in terror.

I checked Climate Reanalyzer and was agog at global hot zones.

I devoured Peter Wadhams' A Farewell to Ice, Extinction Rebellion's This is Not a Drill, Nathaniel Rich's Losing Earth, and David Wallace-Wells' The Uninhabitable Earth.

I scared my therapist with my talk of climate catastrophe.

That's not to say that I'm entirely past that phase of my life. I still regularly check the NSIDC and Climate Reanalyzer. I read IPCC reports. But I'm a little better informed now on the realities of climate collapse. I know shit is currently hitting the fan. But I also know that, no matter what happens, I lived, and I was here. I know it isn't my fault. I know that my efforts to save some fragment of the planet might be in vain, but it can still make me feel better. I do litter clean-up on the side of the roads near me. They still fill with trash after, but for a brief moment in time they look beautiful.

And while I can push to the side of my brain those qualms about sea ice and desertification and microplastics, I can never get the smoke out of my head, out of my nose, out of my lungs.

Living in southern Alberta, I've been used to rapid changes in the weather my whole life. Our proximity to the Rocky Mountains means chinook winds are frequent in the winter, raising the temperature from the low -30s up to the +20s at times. The dry air means hot summer days can quickly cool off. This semi-arid air comes with a caveat though. It's perfect for wildfires. And we have swathes of forests (many of which are awash with trees killed by mountain pine beetles). The same is true of Eastern British Columbia.

Every summer there are at minimum a few days where smoke fills the air. It can be downright cozy at times, when the skies remain clear and blue but you get that whiff of seared wood. It's as if someone is brewing a delicious cup of lapsang souchong (coincidentally my favourite tea). But it isn't uncommon for the smoke to linger for around a week, to make the skies overcast, to reduce visibility so that you cannot see downtown from the outskirts of the city.

With increasing frequency, the smoke has gotten worse. And it has stayed for longer.

In 2015, wildfires in Washington state and western Canada drove air quality in Alberta to be the worst on the planet, shooting to an AQHI of over 28. On a ten point scale.

In 2016, Fort McMurray was partially destroyed by wildfires. It was the most expensive disaster in Canadian history. Fort McMurray is very far from where I live yet the skies were nonetheless a miasma of smoke.

In 2017, 100 Mile House, British Columbia was the site of what would become the largest single fire ever in British Columbia history.

In 2018, the AQHI soared past 10 again. I remember the deep red sun, turning darker as it set. I remember it being the first wildfire season where I had an N95 mask. I had to wear that mask indoors. It was the year I got my cat, and I was horrified at what the air quality would do to her tiny, new lungs. I remember the non-stop headache. And even after the smoke dissipated, the smell remained.

In 2019, the AQHI reached 18 in May. You could see maybe a kilometre into the distance.

In 2020, despite COVID restrictions on activities as distanced as camping, smoke rolled in again. This time it was much less of a danger than previous years (we never broke an 8 on the AQHI).

In 2021, we got the heat dome. A somewhat novel meteorological phenomenon, temperatures in my city reached 36.3°C, only 0.2°C away from the highest ever recorded here. Lytton, British Columbia rose to 49.6°C. And despite the crushing heat, there was almost no smoke. It made it seem almost tame. People were dropping like flies of heat stroke. It felt like being in the fires of hell. But at least there was no smoke. Air quality still became dreadful, but at least there was no smoke.

In 2022, the AQHI only rose past 10 briefly in August. There was some smoke in September. The other day I smelled it on the wind again.

I know the smoke will be back. I know the smoke will be worse. I know the climate will get worse. I know everything will get worse. I know the smoke will be inescapable. I know the air quality will be worse even without the smoke. But as long as charred pine does not poison my lungs, does not burn acrid in my nose, maybe I can hold onto the fragment of hope inside me that thinks things can get better.

CAMP UNUS ANNUS SAFETY RULES!

Rule #1 - Always remember the BS (Buddy System).

Rule #2 - When confronted by a bear (depending on the type of bear), confront it back and make lots of noises. But keep in mind, only do that for Black Bears.

Rule #3 - Bears can't get through the polyurethane of a tent. Plastic repels nature, since it's not of this world.

Rule #4 - The forest doesn't give a damn about you. Arrogance will get you nowhere.

Rule #5 - If you're stuck in a tree alone and two people happen to come across you, they are buddies. Don't just assume because another human life is nearby that they're obligated to help you.

Rule #6 - You help those in need though.

Rule #7 - Communication is key.

Rule #8 - Look, scan, observe, react, run.

How to survive a bear attack:

Rule #9 / Step Number 1 - Evaluate, determine which type of bear it is that it's attacking you.

Rule #10 - If the bear grunts twice it's a Grizzly, if it grunts three times then it's a Polar Bear.

Rule #11 - When dealing with Polar Bears, the biggest thing you want to do is make sure that you're covered head to doe, with as much armor as possible (sleeping bags work just fine).

Rule #12 / Step Number 2 - Try to maintain silence, maybe it'll go away on it's own.

Rule #13 / Step Number 3 - If step 2 fails, abandon all coverage plans, because clearly it's not going to work. However, you don't need to worry, because your tent is safe as long as the bear doesn't claim it as it's own by attracting other bears as competition.

Rule #14 - It is very important that when you go shopping for your tent (or you're finding your tent), you get one that's strong, triple layer made of the highest quality material.

Rule #15 - If the bear attacks with a gun, make sure you cover all of the important parts of your body. The smaller the target the harder it is for a bear to get you.

Rule #16 / Step Number 4 - This is an emergency step, you would never do this unless you were in a extremely dangerous situation... just run. With the help of your buddy (don't forget the buddy system!) you will roll the tent from the inside away from the bear.

Rule #17 - It's important to remember where your tent was when you pitched it.

Rule #18 - At this point the bear should be very intimidated by your skill and athleticism. It may think you and your buddy are now one large creature.

Rule #??? - RAGE, rage against the dying of the light...

Rule #19 - After all that escaping protocol, the bear should be gone by now. But in the case that it's not, just keep going rolling away in the tent.

Rule #20 - Bears are afraid of the sunlight, they can't handle it's intense heat.

Rule #21 / Step Number 5 - And finally, to escape the tent, you have to find it's weakest point and destroy it.

Rule #22 - Nature it's a dangerous place filled with evil, horrible monstrosities that are beautiful in their own way.

How to safely bury your friend:

Rule #23 - Carcasses can attract bears and other wildlife that are opportunistic scavenges.

Rule #24 - For this process you're going to need a shovel and a buddy.

Rule #25 - Don't forget the Buddy System (B.S) or you will DIE.

Rule #26 - The first thing you're going to do is search the area for a proper place for a burial. You want a place with some soft dirt, plenty of open space, and not too near to the campsite.

Rule #27 - Dig six feet down (at the least), so you can put their feet first, then head at the top.

Rule #28 - Your dead body will grow into the environment.

Rule #29 - B.D.S.B (Bearing Doesn't Stop Bears)

Rule #30 - You are also going to need a quality shovel that can break through. You want a sharpen blade and a good foot rest.

Rule #31 - Do not, under ANY circumstances, mention the Tactical Shovel to counselor Mark.

Rule #32 - When you're digging a grave you should bring water, remember to stay hydrated!

Rule #33 - You can only absorbe so much sweat you produce. After a while it gets unhealthy, because your body can't filter out the bad water that you produce.

Rule #34 - You piss out of your skin when you can't piss out of anywhere else. So if you drink that, but then you piss it out again, then it becomes Super Piss (and that's not good to consume). But if you drink that then it turns into Ultra Piss, which is very valuable but bad to ingest. It's also incredible dangerous because, while bees can smell fear, they can also see the vapors from the Ultra Piss. So, although rare and easy to sell to a high price, it would attract thousands of bees.

Rule #35 - B.E.C.W.U.B (Be Extra Careful With [the] Ultra B[P]iss)

Rule #36 - The forest is one of the most polluted places, you can't get a breath of fresh air.

Rule #37 - Your buddy is always a breath of fresh air. (Hey, please don't do what Mark and Ethan did on the video, COVID-19 is still a very, very real thing.)

Rule #38 - Once you are done digging the grave, lay the body on a fetal position. Remember to really support the spine.

Rule #39 - If you can, get a standing grave, it's great for the spine.

Rule #40 - You can feel more productive when you are standing.

The smoke signals will travel to your candling and say "Hey, catch on fire." And in response it will sometimes go "Okay" in an umberwear farm. Rule #71 - Always have a fire extinguisher (preferably water) just in case something goes wrong.

Rule #72 - Put your prefect stick on your wood base and start rubbing said stick against it.

Rule #73 - Gently blow the base after rubbing the stick, fire needs oxygen to grow.

Rule #74 - If you manage to make a hole through the base, leave the stick there and start spinning it. With the power of insertion, if you get it going fast enough, flames should ignite.

When you get a bit better, you can't go out training but you definitely draw or play sports with the Wii at home, this is definitely quality time for him.

Overall it could sound strange but Daichi doesn't hate these episodes, because he can see that you can do chores or just have fun, and this is definitely a proof of strenght for him!

Your voice. She could never get tired of listening to it. It could be filled with excitement about the simplest things or the certain tone you make when you pout because of her teasing. Absolutely love it and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Your neck! She loves to bury her face in it and leaving little kisses all over it (depending on you things might escalate👀). It’s also a place of comfort after a bad day. She claims that your scent calms her down. It also gives her the excuse of being close to you.

C = Cuddling (how do they like to cuddle?)

(I just thought about her giving you that kiss right before yorknew without knowing that was going to be her last. I’m sitting here sad now.)

Physical touch is really big. Believes that actions speak louder than words. She also just really likes touching you. If that’s not your forte then she’ll go to the next best thing: gift-giving. Baise has really good taste so if she sees something she thinks you’ll like consider it bought.

M = Memory (favorite memory together?)

You two were on a date. It was at a field of flowers that you could pick. To be honest though you two were just playing around. Running and jumping around, laughing at each other’s antics. I mean who could ask for a better day. You two were standing under a tree sharing short and sweet kisses when a girl took a picture. It’s Blaise favorite. Whenever she’s doing a job she’ll look at it to remind her what she’s coming back to.

N = Nightmare (when is their worst fear?)

Someone coming to kill you. She’s worked and dealt with some nasty people. She also knows that people do come after others just because they feel like it. She would be absolutely torn if she came home one day to not only see that place trashed but to also see you laying on the floor lifeless.

That she’s a heavy sleeper. It will take some time getting her up in the morning but that’s alright! There’s a foolproof way of getting her up…or it might end in her pulling you back to sleep. First make some tea. Then go into your shared room and begin placing soft kisses all over her face. She’ll begin to stir with that but it’s not enough! “Love, it’s time to get up. I made you some tea.” Baise will let out a groan before pulling you into her, placing a kiss on your head. “Why’re you always up so early?” is what you’re usually met with.

P = Pet Names (what do they like to call you?)

Regular ones like babe, love, lovebug, or, her personal favorite, the absolute love of her life. When she says this it’s always in a dramatic tone. Doesn’t do the shorter version of your name unless it’s a really serious topic and she needs you to be serious.

Q = Quality Time (how do they like to spend time with you?)

Baise is willing to do whatever you want to. She just wants to be close to you. Wanna cuddle? The pillows and blankets are all ready to go. Want to cook? She’s a decent chef so sure why not? Want to watch that show you’ve been binging? Let her get the popcorn.

R = Rhythm (what song reminds you of them?)

Le Festin from the Ratatouille soundtrack. You two were cooking when it came on and acted like fancy chefs. It’s a very cherished memory between the both of you. I’m a Flirt by R. Kelly is one. Like the title it implies her flirtatious behavior towards you and how she likes to tease. Last but not least is I Met Sarah in the Bathroom. S = Secrets (how open are they with you?)

At first not so much. It’s not because she didn’t want to open up. It’s just the fact that she wants to keep you safe. Eventually she’ll start venting her issues to you. Little by little she’ll get more comfortable just saying what’s bothering around you.

T = Time (how long did it take you to get together?)

A few years. Baise loved you and wants to spend the rest of her life with you. However she works a dangerous job. The last thing she wants is to drag you into something that could possibly end you.

U = Upset (how do they act when you’re upset?)

Upon seeing you upset she’ll pull you into a hug. Rubbing your back asking what happened. If you decide not to tell her that’s fine. She’ll then ask you what you want to do. It can be going for a snack run, taking a walk, cuddling, anything. As long as she gets to see you smile again.

V = Vaunt (what are they proud of? Do they like to show you off?)

Hell yeah! On the occasion that you two go into town she’ll be proud that she gets to walk around with you. Proud that you chose her over everyone else.

W = Warrior (how do they feel about you fighting?)

Honestly would rather you not. The thought of you getting injured or worse haunts her. If you can fend for yourself then she can’t really stop you but she’ll be extra attentive to make sure nothing happens.

X = X-Ray (how well are they able to read you?)

With her occupation, she needs to be able to read people. So being able to read you comes with it too. If Baise sees that you’re upset she’ll walk up cupping your face in the process asking what’s wrong.

It was one of this very rare occasions that Baise was up before you. She was standing on the balcony over the city in deep thought when your arms found their way around her. “Well someone’s up early.” You said in a teasing tone. She chuckled to herself, turning around to engulf you. “What’s on your mind?” She let out a sigh. “You can see right through me. As always.” Looking up, you were met with green eyes full of love and admiration but also concern and worry. “I’ve been thinking a lot about us..” Your breath hitched. You always knew that your safety was her highest priority. You knew she would brake it off if she deemed it unsafe. Was this it? What Makes a King? - A Concept Overview & Analysis

Above is my favorite scene from the manhwa King’s Maker (from Season 1 Episode/chapter 14). 

I love this scene because it perfectly embodies the ideal of what it takes to be a just or good leader in the fictional world of this particular story (not just seen as one publicly, but actually being one). It's an idea that relies heavily on the concept of noblesse oblige, which tends to pop-up in stories featuring nobles, royalty, or something similar. While also expanding on this idea of the necessity for chivalry that draws its definition and history from stories of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round. In modern-day stories, I would argue that much of our current interpretations and ideas of knightly/chivalric qualities come from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s stories of the king and his knights as well as the tales’ later retellings. [For those that don’t know noblesse oblige is the idea of inferred responsibility from privileged people to act with generosity and nobility toward those less privileged and chivalry is defined as a knightly system with its religious, moral, and social code. Geoffrey of Monmouth is the author of the first narrative account of King Arthur's life that we know of.]

You see, as someone who has studied literature in school, particularly Classical Antiquity and where we've gone from since, I've always been really interested in this idea of what makes a King, particularly in stories where we see a fight for the throne because it's hard to maintain these ideal qualities in what is often a bloody battle for power among people who have little to no qualms about committing vile acts to maintain what they have or gain more power, money, etc. This question of what makes a King? is a one I find myself asking often when I read fantasy stories that involve any question of a throne or it’s inheritance. However, I use the term "king" loosely to encompass the concept of a rightful ruler as defined by the set up an author gives in their individual stories.  

In popular works like Game of Thrones, in which we see much of the darker sides to knighthood, oaths, nobility, royalty, and so on--we see the grim reality of Geoffrey of Monmouth's time. In fact, some argue that Geoffrey's account and the focus on the knighthood and Arthur's reign amid war and beyond was a subversive aim to inspire real change among the dark abuses of power that many members of the knightly class, nobility, and above, held. In a movie like The Knight's Tale, we see this too in which it is the common man that depicts the embodiment of a true knight's spirit--one that is loyal, protective, chivalrous, deserving of love and admiration, and so on--rather than the majority of the knights born to their status. Shakespeare, who features many noble and royal families in his tales, also marks some of these qualities--showing audiences both redeeming features and cruelty among the classes (a rare depiction that landed him, at times, in the hot seat). 

These stories draw me in, as they do many others, and I think we can draw a conclusion on the trials a good or just king, knight, noble, or other must embody to achieve their "throne" by the end--one that is a bit more clear than The King Maker's summary above. 

Each potential "king" must succeed in a trail depicting one or more of the seven knightly virtues (defined here: http://marktoci.weebly.com/7-knightly-virtues.html), those being: 

“Courage.  More than bravado or bluster, a knight must have the courage of the heart necessary to undertake tasks which are difficult, tedious or unglamorous, and to graciously accept the sacrifices involved.

Justice.  A knight holds him- or herself to the highest standard of behavior, and knows that “fudging” on the little rules weakens the fabric of society for everyone.

Mercy.  Words and attitudes can be painful weapons, which is why a knight exercises mercy in his or her dealings with others, creating a sense of peace and community, rather than engendering hostility and antagonism.

Generosity.  Sharing what’s valuable in life means not just giving away material goods, but also time, attention, wisdom and energy - the things that create a strong, rich and diverse community.

Faith.  In the code of chivalry, “faith” means trust and integrity, and a knight is always faithful to his or her promises, no matter how big or small they may be.

Nobility.  Although this word is sometimes confused with “entitlement” or “snobbishness,” in the code of chivalry it conveys the importance of upholding one’s convictions at all times, especially when no one else is watching.

Hope.  More than just a safety net in times of tragedy, hope is present every day in a knight’s positive outlook and cheerful demeanor - the ‘shining armor’ that shields him or her, and inspires people all around.”

Suppose one were to look to the code of chivalry defined in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In that case, those virtuous qualities might instead be represented as friendship, generosity, chastity, courtesy, and piety/humility. 

Failing to pass such trails, the potential "king" would instead display a knightly sin (defined here: https://chivalrytoday.com/knightly-sins/), and often, if not always, in a story suffers karma for such actions. 

The idea of a Hero's Journey, a story form I'm sure everyone has heard defined many times before, includes these trails even though they are rarely explicitly spelled out in a summary of the form. This may be because many heroes rising, of which these "kings" are, already embody these virtues and only struggle with or require a trial against one of them.

As it stands, we can often see in advance a potential king's tragedy by understanding this idea. For example, we know that Wolfgang Goldenleonard, the prince seen above in The King's Maker excerpt I’ve provided, is going to be the King, birth order be damned. Will there be trails? Of course. And he passes them securing his crown at the end of Season 1; and continues to pass them thus maintaining his throne, which we can see currently in Season 2.

By extension, we can see the character's whose stories will end in failure based on how long it takes them to pass the knightly trails, if they even can pass them. For example, Richard III in Requiem of the Rose King, which is sure to end in tragedy--not simply because the Shakespearean plays the work draws on tend to end that way but because Richard’s character has changed from the loyal son/brother. 

King, in this sense, could probably easily be replaced by the word hero or knight... but the idea stands that to make them worthy of their title they seem to need one or more of these qualities.

So as you read the next chapter of your favorite knight's tale, or a battle for the throne, or a rise to power--consider whether or not your hero/protagonist is capable of achieving these virtues. You will probably find that even the characters that seem villainous, like the self-ish Seo Joo-Heon from Tomb Raider King or Naofumi Iwatani from The Rising of The Shield Hero, pass the test we've defined here.

Chinese Megastar Lay Zhang wants to bring ‘China to the world’ with his music. He talks to Don’t Bore Us about how he plans to achieve his dreams.

For most of us, our dreams are conditional. For us, they remain in the abstract most of the time, attached to phrases like ‘It would be good if…’ or ‘I wish I…’. Not for Lay Zhang. Lay Zhang speaks in dreams. In his mind, he picks them out of the abstract and parks them on the road to his goals. Then, he sets into motion a cause and effect cycle, where each step leads to the realization of that dream.

“The word dream is a strange one,” he wrote in his autobiography Standing Firm at 24. “You start with a dream, but you have to fulfill everything in reality. Of course, it’s not really that you’re dreaming, because someone once told me, a dream is actually what a person’s heart looks like.”

Despite his status as one of China’s most famous stars, it’s this spirit that still is the condensation of Zhang’s ethos as an artist. Born in Changsha in the Chinese province of Hunan as Zhang Yixing, he was no stranger to the world of entertainment as a child star. In 2008, he auditioned for trainee-ship at SM Entertainment, largely considered the progenitor of modern-day K-pop, and passed. Four years later, he debuted as EXO’s Lay, an act that turned the tide for K-pop in the 2010s.

It’s an ideal trajectory for anyone with dreams as big as Zhang: every new release came with new records and renown. Eventually, however, Zhang realized what his work was missing: a piece of his roots. He wanted to show the world “what China is really about.”

And so he said: “Let there be LIT.”

Named after a play on the Chinese word for lotus, ‘lián huā’, LIT — released in two parts over the course of 2020 — puts Zhang’s Chinese identity at its core. As he weaves the sounds of the Hulusi, Guzheng and Gong together with hip-hop, R&B, and Latin, Zhang not only creates his own genre (which he calls “mixed Mando-pop”), but also nurtures a new dream: one where Mando-pop frees itself of the labels of being “vapid” and “vain” and presents new avenues of experimentation and cultural triumph.

“In the future, mixed will be king. Every work, every genre can be mixed with each other; every language can mix with another. That’s where we go.” he says.

The way to this “mixed” world might be long, but Zhang will soon have company on the way. Earlier in 2020, he announced the establishing of his own company, Chromosome Entertainment, with a set focus to not only train the next generation of Chinese idols, but also to include Chinese culture and history as an integral part of their artistry.

DBU caught up with Lay Zhang to talk about Chromosome Entertainment, his music, how he is going to take his company to ‘infinity’, and his adorable cats.

Don’t Bore Us: Why did you think this was the right time to start your own company?

Lay Zhang: I have always wanted to have my own company and leave my mark in the world. I feel I need to think less and do more. I wanted to do it no matter how difficult it would be. If I kept waiting for the right moment, I might never do it. So, I created the Chromosome Entertainment Group.

DBU: Is there anything that you’ll focus on teaching the trainees that you yourself didn’t get during your trainee years?

Lay Zhang: Our trainees will learn more and more about Chinese culture and Chinese history.

DBU: Speaking of your music over the past year, we have to talk about LIT. We saw you expand into genres that you had never experimented with before. While Part 1 was a mix of traditional Chinese sounds, Part 2 had more modern inspirations such as R&B, Hip-hop, Latin, and others. Which of these sounds comes more naturally to you, and which one is more difficult to explore?

Lay Zhang: I just tried a lot of genres. Since I was young, I have been singing in Chinese and listening to pop music, so I find writing R&B is easier, since it is similar. With traditional Chinese music, it feels like second nature, since I grew up with it.

Latin and Hip-hop is very new to me, but Latin caught my ear because it’s easy to dance to. I’ve been listening to hip-hop and trap in the past few years. I think no matter what kind, I want to do a new genre. I want to call it M-pop because I think in the future, mixed will be king. Every work, every genre can be mixed with each other — every language can mix with each other, and that’s where we go.

DBU: Speaking of the incorporation of your native Chinese sounds into the songs on the first album, what is the most difficult part while looking for a middle-ground between culture and modernity?

Lay Zhang: You always want to respect the culture. We owe a lot to the past for giving us today: I cannot stress that enough. I understand that people have new tastes each year, so you want to make sure that you match the energy and the vibe of the year.

It’s hard to explain how I find the balance. I ask my friends and collaborators, what they feel. I took that into consideration [with LIT], and checked my gut feeling. Did I feel [like] it mixed my Chinese sound with the present or modern without losing it? It’s [a] feeling I get after listening to the record time after time in my car or in the studio.

DBU: With reference to bringing “China to the world”. How do you think LIT did that, apart from, of course, being a mash-up of different influences?

Lay Zhang: I think this album is the first of its kind in a way. It’s very unique: we brought together new and legendary producers to create beautiful music. We had traditional and modern day stories to showcase the idea of the past and the present, to show the world that Chinese artists can be creative. They can think more deeply about music. I want people to know that we are improving everyday. We are working hard. This is what LIT shows.

DBU: Historically, western audiences have thought of Mando-pop as being “very vain or bland.” You have always wanted to push forward Mixed Mando-pop through your work. How do you hope to change this perception of Mando-pop globally through your music?

Lay Zhang: It is a work in progress. We are still improving and developing M-pop. Since I was a child, I have always had big goals and dreams. I want to show the world what China is really about, that we are respectful people trying to better ourselves.

DBU: Your current approach to your work makes me curious. The words “one of China’s biggest celebrities” are often used in your context. With the fan-base and work you’ve built over the years, you could very well have taken the safer route and stuck to the previous sounds you have experimented with before, because anything you make is guaranteed to be a hit. So why is it important for you to keep making the kind of music you do, in the way you make it?

Lay Zhang: I want to challenge myself and see what I can do. I admit, I don’t always succeed, but I’d rather try different genres and sing in different languages to see what I am capable of. Like any artist, I want my music to reach more people, so you have to branch out and try new things, but at the same time, not lose who you are. I have great fans that support me and allow me to dream bigger. I want to pave the path for the next generation to share their music with the world.

DBU: You’ve worked both in South Korea and China. With K-pop having a moment in the global spotlight, what are some things that you feel M-pop could learn or borrow from K-pop?

Lay Zhang: I think it’s great that K-pop is having its moment. In M-pop, we need to put ourselves out there more. We need to meet fans in every city and town to create that one-on-one interaction. I think there are enough artists with quality music to match the artists in K-pop: we just need to focus on sharing Mando-pop.

DBU: For the past few years, you have been heavily involved in music reality shows geared towards bringing out China’s next musical stars. There was Idol Producer, Youth With You, Street Dance of China: what are your hopes from the next generation, and why this interest?

Lay Zhang: The next generation inspires me. Their dreams and efforts inspire me to work harder and be a good role model. I hope they can focus on creating great art and work that they can be proud of. Their work should speak for itself. If everyone can do this, they can do this. If everyone can do this, we can push the boundaries of music and art. We can create works that leave people in awe.

DBU: In the larger context of your artistry, what impact has this year had on you personally?

Lay Zhang: COVID-19 slowed my life down like everyone else. We have all experienced difficulties, but I was able to think about my music and career more clearly. I decided that I should go after the things I want as soon as I could. For my artistry, I realized I needed to focus on music I made, my company, and make music that really carried the culture and vibe of my country.

DBU: Observing your trajectory from when you just started out to now, I was thinking about how it is very clear where your professional priorities lie. What about personal ones? What are you focusing on personally in the coming year?

Lay Zhang: I think about this a lot, and it’s hard to separate my work and personal life. But I think I only have that much time before I run out of energy. I am always thirsty (laughs), so I know I won’t be able to continue this forever. I want to keep pushing until I can’t. So, then I can focus on my personal life knowing I gave it all to my career.

DBU: I asked some fans if they had anything to say to you, and most of them wanted me to relay the same thing: please take a well-deserved break! Now that LIT has had its successful run, is it time for a vacation, or is there more to come?

Lay Zhang: My cats give me a lot of confidence and happiness. They make it easier to face each day; it’s nice to know you have someone waiting for you at home. But I will take a vacation when I turn 40 (laughs). Of course, there is more to come: the trainees we are receiving are so talented. I am excited to create something that will hopefully last a long time, and will improve and uphold the entertainment industry in China.

Did you make any money today?  Not today, because it’s a weekend.

What was the highest place you've ever jumped from?  I’m not too sure, actually. I tend to be cautious when it comes to jumping just because I always have this fear at the back of my head that I could possibly snap my legs in half upon landing lol.

Do you have a favorite remix of a song?  I’ve never enjoyed remixes and just stick to original versions of songs. The one remix I’ll give a pass to is BTS’ Mic Drop with Steve Aoki just because that one includes a dance break that sounds really nice and gets me all hyped up.

Has the power gone out recently?  Yeah, like two weeks ago. I was working from home then so it had been a huge bother, but fortunately I had been charging my devices all day and also had enough data on my phone so I was able to continue.

Do you like driving at night?  It’s ok and actually pretty relaxing if it’s LATE late at night and there’s barely any cars. Driving in the evening during rush hour, on the other hand, is just fucking stressful.

What do you think is the most saddest sounding instrument?  Depending on how it’s played, probably the piano or violin.

Do you really pay attention to the ratings on movies?  Yes. It’s a pretty influential factor.

Have you ever snuck in to a theater/dance/bar etc?  No.

If given the chance, would you go to Ireland?  I mean, it’s not really on top of my bucket list but for the sake of travelling and experiencing a different place and culture I definitely would go to Ireland.

Are you afraid of standing on the edge of hills/skyscrapers/cliffs etc?  I am scared but whenever I’m given the chance to do this I kind of scrap that fear first and live in the moment.

Do you have an absolute favorite name (boy or girl)? Alessandra, 120%. It is so beautiful-sounding, plus I love that you can use "Alessa" as a nickname. My Silent Hill obsession is quite thrilled by that, ha ha. < I love that name too, now that I think about it. For now, I think Olivia still tops my list.

When listening to music, do you usually tap your foot etc to the beat?  I tap my fingers more than my foot.

"Chinese Megastar Lay Zhang wants to bring ‘China to the world’ with his music. He talks to Don’t Bore Us about how he plans to achieve his dreams.

For most of us, our dreams are conditional. For us, they remain in the abstract most of the time, attached to phrases like ‘It would be good if…’ or ‘I wish I…’. Not for Lay Zhang. Lay Zhang speaks in dreams. In his mind, he picks them out of the abstract and parks them on the road to his goals. Then, he sets into motion a cause and effect cycle, where each step leads to the realization of that dream.

“The word dream is a strange one,” he wrote in his autobiography Standing Firm at 24. “You start with a dream, but you have to fulfill everything in reality. Of course, it’s not really that you’re dreaming, because someone once told me, a dream is actually what a person’s heart looks like.”

Despite his status as one of China’s most famous stars, it’s this spirit that still is the condensation of Zhang’s ethos as an artist. Born in Changsha in the Chinese province of Hunan as Zhang Yixing, he was no stranger to the world of entertainment as a child star. In 2008, he auditioned for trainee-ship at SM Entertainment, largely considered the progenitor of modern-day K-pop, and passed. Four years later, he debuted as EXO’s Lay, an act that turned the tide for K-pop in the 2010s.

Home, however, was never very far away — after flitting between South Korea and China for work for sometime, the lengthy schedules eventually made him shift base to mainland China, laying the groundwork for Lay Zhang. His first studio album, Lay 02 Sheep, broke five records on the first day of digital release on the Chinese music service QQ Music. C: What character do you identify with most?

On TVD, probably Caroline but I think she is (ignoring post season 4/5) the most relatable to most women. She and I have a shared neuroticism, love of organisation and control. However, according to a google search, I have the same personality type as Bonnie (INFJ - though I’m more Ambivert than either I or E) which makes a lot of sense to me but they really never brought out her full potential so I think it would be hard for anyone to fully identify. In the broader world of fiction, though, I’m Lisa Simpson. My mum says it all the time and even that one test puts me as highest correlated with her.

D: Is there a song or a playlist to associate with Psychedelic Kicks?

It’s called To The Beautiful You (아름다운 그대에게) and it’s by Wonder Girls. It’s the reason this fic even exists and the last official release of my first ever K-Pop artist (I’m fine, everything is fine 😫). I made a fake playlist for it though here ✨

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

@she-walked-away (Unexpected Exposure + Dirty Little Secret) @galvanizedfriend (We’ll Always Have New Orleans) @supernutellastuff (Picturesque) are definitely the most influential simply because a year ago almost to the very day, I had been considering deleting this account but reading and re-reading (in the case of she-walked-away’s stories) their fics really inspired me to return to writing. It’s crazy to think that if not for them, would I be writing right now? I went through a hiatus that was almost 2 years and I just kinda disappeared and I didn’t write more than a couple thousand words and now this year alone, I’ve written near 200,000 words. So a big thank you is in order for them ❤️

U: Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

I’m just going to gush more about the three already mentioned:

she-walked-away: This writer is just a master at making drama come to life. It never feels forced or over the top and the dialogue revolving conflict feels so natural and realistic. I have read Dirty Little Secret...too many times just because it is such an easy, enjoyable read. I can read it in one day and be like well, ok let’s go back to the beginning and start again! Unexpected Exposure, is my favourite, however. I don’t read it often but it’s because when I do, I really like to savour every single scene. I always bring it up, but there’s this scene where they’re in a club dancing with each other and the sexual chemistry is just through the freaking roof! This could be a non-KC story and I would still regard it as a favourite.

galvanizedfriend: I found this story in the tumblr tags last year. I had finished classes a month before I was set to go home so I had a lot of free time and just ended up re-reading a bunch of fics. When I finished all my usual favourites, I looked in the tumblr tags and stumbled upon We’ll Always Have New Orleans. I am such a picky reader ESPECIALLY when it comes to dialogue and tended to prefer human AUs over canon-divergent stories but this story just blew me away (and now here I am, writing a canon-divergent story). Yokan writes so beautifully and I am in awe of how much she can write in such little time with such quality. The story isn’t available any longer and I will always respect her decision to make it so but from all that I can recall, the characterisation was just wonderful. (spoilers) It honestly broke my heart when they reunite and there’s just the gut-wrenching realisation that for her it had been a day or so but for him it had been like 3 months. I CANNOT EXPRESS THE LEVEL OF GUILT I FELT VICARIOUSLY THROUGH CAROLINE. Heartbreak aside, the romance is so fucking gorgeous and well-built, never forced, always well-timed.

supernutellastuff: I, like Yokan’s story, found Picturesque when I was done re-reading my usuals and I think I found it on a klarolinemagazine list for friends with benefits. This was a story that literally had me like ????? how had I never seen this story before?????? Like I said, I’m picky as fuuuuck and I just fell into this story and it swallowed me whole. The friendships in this story really make it come to life and the first scene (spoilers) where Klaus and Caroline are smoking together, and he’s like well it’ll just be us two left - I SCREAM the chemistry was already overflowing. This story builds upon their relationship gradually and it really feels like two freaking adults in a weird entanglement. It’s not filled with random plot twists and it’s not so true to life that it becomes boring, it is just the perfect balance.

X: A character you enjoy making suffer.

There isn’t really any one character in particular (Damon cough) but I kind of enjoy making them all suffer in some way but mainly because it’s I know the reader will suffer? And if that’s not sadistic, I don’t know what is lmao

Testing the Potion Maker

Author’s Note: Based on  @lamiasluck​ Magic!AU. So, I’ve discovered this cool and talented writer from a Creative Buddy of mine, @juju-on-that-yeet blog. I went to take a look at @lamiasluck and found a couple of their AU’s and fell in love with them!

So, @lamiasluck this is for your Magic!AU. And since I found your AO3 Account and instantly fell in love with your Timid Speech Series. Expect another fic for ya based on that as well!

Summary:  Dark decides to pay the new Potion Maker a personal visit. He wants to see first hand just how “innocent” Eric truly is and at the same time, why not put this new Potion Maker to the test? Dark needs two of the most, highest quality, and very powerful potions of all time.

(Potion Shop)

Dark decided to pay the new Potion Maker, (Eric was it?) a visit.  He had heard from not just two of his loyal members that this new guy was so innocent but now, even one of his best spies said that he was as well.  There’s just no way someone would end up here without some kind of secret to hide!  Usually, Dark would have his “informant” in his basement “spilling the beans” on Eric by now, but unfortunately, Doctor Iplier needed to rest.  During their last, “investigation” to get the information Dark needed, Edward nearly experienced magical exhaustion.

Which led Dark to his little stroll down, downtown.  They found a man that would have the answers that Dark would need to get to the bottom of this new Potion Maker and whether or not he’s as innocent as he plays to be.  So, why not test the new Potion Maker?  Edward as of right now, couldn’t use his talents when Dark interrogated their new informant, so Dark came up with a new plan. A Truth Potion, just a few drops will have the person spilling all of their secrets no matter how personal they may be.  So, what better way to test the new Potion Maker to see if he’s the real deal then to see if he has the true skills to make it?

A little bell dinged as Dark stepped through the threshold of the Potion Shop.  Light beige walls, very colorful but organized potions, and ingredients littered the shelves.  Dark even saw some local and very exotic looking plants were scattered around the place as well.  It felt a bit “cozy” actually.  Another reason to be suspicious of this new Potion Maker.  Dark stood there with his snake familiar, Celine, draped comfortably across his shoulders.

There were a couple of other customers in the shop and all of them knew he was and made the right choice of giving, Dark a wide birth.  Dark started browsing the shelves.  Most of them were healing potions, prank potions, potions to help you when your sick, and some potions that were just silly.  As Dark browse the shelves he came to one spot that looked quite empty and very out of place.  Hm, maybe he would find out what this little Potion Maker is hiding after all.  The empty space wasn’t much, just a small little cube-like space but there was dust covering it the inside of it.  And when Dark inspected a little closer he found a small card that looked like someone was trying to hide it.  When Dark picked it up and brushed the dust off of it, a Cheshire like grin was displayed on his face.  Taking the card with him, Dark made his way to the front counter.

“Oh, hello s-sir. How may - how may I help you today?”  Dark became confused as to how this meek little magic user became the new Potion Maker.  Still, Dark wanted answers and he was going to get them!

“Ah, yes. I require two potions to be made,” Dark said.

“What - what kind of potions do you need to be made sir?”  Eric asked.

“I require a Truth Potion and of course this Potion to be made,” Dark smirked handing the card over.

Eric took the Potion Card with a confused expression.  He didn’t remember put out “specialty made cards.”  When Eric saw the name of the potion that the man in front of him wanted to make, Eric immediately became uncomfortable.  That was close to a Class 5 Potion.  Not necessarily illegal especially with certain clients in this town, but this was certainly close to it! Especially with how it could be used!  Eric wasn’t sure why it hasn’t been forbidden or put on the illegal list yet.

“Um,  you want me to, to make you a True Loves Potion, sir?”  Eric asked timidly.

A True Loves Potion was highly sought after but it could be used in so many detrimental ways.  Traditional Families used it to make sure their children married the ones that the parents have picked out specifically for the sons and daughters to marry.  Many fans have tried to use it on certain celebrities because they were so convinced that they and the celebrity were actually dating or worst.  Try to break up the celebrity was with and make them fall in love with that obsessed fan.  The only reason why the Government hadn’t put the True Loves Potion on the banned and forbidden list was because; there were certain tests you could do to make sure that you weren’t given it.  And if you were given it, there was an antidote to go with it.

“Yes, along with the Truth Potion,” Dark said getting a little impatient.

“O-okay,” Eric said.  “It’ll be ready by tomorrow.”

“See that it does,” Dark said.

“What name do I put it under, sir?” Eric asked still very nervous.

“Dark.”  And Dark turned and walked out of the shop, not noticing the trembling man behind the counter.

(The Next Day)

The next day came around and Eric was still shaking.  He just met the most dangerous man that he heard of from so many different clients, Wilford especially.  But he never thought that Dark would ever step into his shop.  Now, Eric wasn’t so sure what’s he more afraid of, Dark killing him on the spot if he wasn’t satisfied with his work?  Or what twisted plot Dark might be doing with these two Potions?  Neither of them was illegal although, Eric stopped worrying about that the day he met Bim!

The Truth Potion was a potion that just a few drops either directly from the bottle or in a drink then you will be telling the person on the other side everything!  And when they say everything, they mean everything!  The True Loves Potion, however, that one was trickier.  So many gray areas and so many things with it that it should be illegal and then you have so many of the “Upper Class” telling everyone that will listen.  All the reasons why it shouldn’t be illegal!  The only problem (if you make it right) was that both parties had to drink the potion!  Otherwise, r it will only last a few days or it won’t work at all!

At this point, Eric honestly didn’t care!  As long as he didn’t know anything, or no one told him what they need it for!  Then he could go on with his day pretending that he didn’t just help some criminal!  How, did this happen to him?  Eric just heard about this small town and thought it would be a good place to start over again.  Not having to fear for his life from his overbearing father!  But now, he would just have to play along until he could find another place and move!  The sound of the bell brought Eric out of his brooding thoughts.

“Oh, Mr. Dark!” Eric squeaked.  “I got your order right here sir!”  Eric went to the back and brought out two vials.  One was a bright golden color and the other was a dark pink color.  Eric quickly put them in a safe box for the purchase and told Dark what he owed.

Dark, examined the potions first, and then gave a satisfying nod.  “Here you go, kid.  You’ve earned it.”  Dark said, giving Eric a stack of bills then walking out with the potions.

(Ego Inc)

Dark walked into the basement of his home where he had his “informant.”  Dark smiled at him, tied to the chair, trying his best to act like the “tough guy.”  Doing his absolute best to try and get out the restraints.

“What the hell do you want?!”  The man spat.  “Where’s my son?  Where’s Eric?”

“Funny, you seemed so glad that you didn’t have to deal with the ‘Son that’s the greatest disappointment’ last night,” Dark said as he strolled up to the man with his hands behind his back.  “So, tell me Mr. Derkson, are we going to do this easy way or the hard way?”

“You can go to hell for all I care,” the Man spat again through gritted teeth.

“The easy way then,” Dark said as he took the vial out of his pocket.  He then grabbed Derek’s jaw and wretched it opened.  Careful not to put more than the required drops in his mouth and then covering his mouth so he had no choice to swallow.

He stopped struggling then. He just had this blank look in his eyes as he stared ahead.

“What’s your name?”  Dark asked.

“Derek Derkson,” Derek answered in a monotone voice.

“What are your powers?”

“Fire.”

“How many sons do you have?”

“I had sixteen sons.  Twins, triplets even a few singles.  Unfortunately, due to a horrible accident, I only have one son left.  Eric.”

Dark smiled now.  “So, Derek.  Tell me everything about Eric?”
