Every time you try bringing it up, it’s like Senku gets a sixth sense about it and is pulled away from you as soon as possible. Listen, listen: I was considering a more standard/expected approach to this matchup, like maybe c!Wilbur or c!Niki because they’ve both got some major academia vibes. Especially Niki, because damn she’d probably take you to her flower shop and make handmade bouquets for you each day. However, I just think that it would be so perfectly fitting to have you and c!Sapnap together aesthetically. He’s very emotionally driven, always doing something stupid, and he probably hasn’t read a book since L’manburg claimed to be a sovereign nation. Regardless of that fact, he could sit and watch you read a book for hours, even if you didn’t ask him to. Standard case of grounded scholar + impulsive idiot = natural soulmates.

Within the region of the SMP, I imagine you like confining yourself to the libraries filled with ancient texts on the vast history of your home — although taking a visit to Eret’s self-made museum is always a pleasure as well. Niki gets along with you easily enough that you hang out together all the time, and it’s on one such occasion in the early days of L’manburg that Sapnap encounters you for the first time.

Dream had sent him out for scouting duty (which to Sapnap translates into, ‘be annoying to everyone within the walls’), and he’d taken to the edge of the country’s small borders, lounging up high above the trees so that he could see everything below with ease. To his surprise he found you, scribbling away within a ragged old notebook underneath a tree canopy, and wearing the prettiest smile he’d ever seen exist on a person before. You were waiting for your friend to arrive, it seemed, taking the ideas in your head and putting them to paper whilst you sat patiently. He was enraptured with you right away, and as a result he took to teasingly pestering you every chance he could.

Sapnap showed up at least once a week — and when he could, more than that — to slowly learn more about you. He tried staying under the radar of Wilbur when he did, just to make sure none of his endeavors were interfered with or got back to Dream in any capacity. Initially, his presence appeared a pain in your side, but your apprehension ultimately fell at the hands of his ridiculous humor and genuine inquiries as to your likes and dislikes. You knew who he was from the get-go, but it was hard not to find delight in his visits when he made such vigorous attempts to know you.

Although you’re sure he’d already learned it somehow, you told him your name one fateful afternoon, and he’s thought about that moment every day since, marking it as the first day he truly made progress in winning you over.

“You should come up here one day so we can talk normally,” he called out on a particularly overcast fall morning. “Maybe then I can see your face up close.”

You laughed, gazing up at him from the hillside on which you reclined. “You’re ridiculous. That’s not how this relationship works.”

“Mm, relationship? Sounds like you wanna gimme a kiss more than saying anything, hu—ow!”

A pine cone had clipped him in the shoulder harmlessly, chucked with expert aim by your own hand. Despite his surprise, Sapnap couldn’t help smiling.

“If you’re working that hard to twist the narrative and get me up there, how about you just come down instead?”

Without missing a beat the next day, he scaled to the top of the nation’s wall, made his way inside (with very little consideration for his safety), and took your face in his hands.

Navigating a full blown relationship in the conditions y’all were in was not ideal. Sapnap tried everything he could to make sure you were safe, despite his distaste for your mother country and its leaders. After that cleared, though, it was a whole lot easier to be together and figure things out. Sapnap didn’t mind you staying within the walls as much as he initially thought because it reminded him of the first time you met, and so long as he could spend time with you he loved every second. Literally ask this man to do anything with you and he’s in, no matter what it is.

The sheer spontaneous energy Sapnap has inevitably feeds into your own, so while you’re much more contained than the pyromaniac, you have some very notable moments of crazy that are simply unforgettable. It’s honestly super funny to see that infectious life invade your senses, because otherwise you’re a super logical person and love entertaining yourself with the more simplistic things.

You work a lot with Wilbur on record keeping and cartography, but something that you and Sapnap apparently have in common is archery. That pine cone throw was no fluke, and he found that out when you came to visit, a shimmering bow fastened to a stock-full quiver on your back. It’s become a pastime to both ride out into the forest with your horses and practice archery (oftentimes mounted) as a way to let out frustration. If the weather conditions are too abysmal to go and do something outdoors, though, Sapnap likes to fall asleep watching you do methodical work, most commonly with his head in your lap as a fireplace crackles nearby. He’s a huge sucker for that cozy atmosphere, even though he tries to be all tough and badass at other times.

This became a huge ramble because I just think this pairing for you works so well, but I’m praying you get the picture. Sapnap is a flirty, slightly whiny, very protective, and free spirited person whenever you’re around, and he’d do whatever he could to see that pretty smile like the first day you told him your name. He thinks the world of you, and in his eyes your intelligence goes unparalleled.

(Mostly) Destiel Fic Recs #5

This is a LONG recs post because it’s been a while since I did an update and I fell hard into reading one author’s work (DeanRH). In fact I could easily do a rec post just of their fics alone, but for this round I’m just going to pick out a handful of my absolute favorites so far, the ones I’d recommend to start out with, along with more other authors’ works I’ve especially enjoyed lately.

Absolution at the Five-and-Dime by DeanRH (125k)  - this is perhaps THEE DeanRH fic to start with if you want a good, long read with a little bit of everything (Roadtrips! Intriguing casefic! Americana! Tasty Dean/Cas pining! Wing!kink and unique angel lore! Kinky soul fisting and tentacles!) It’s kind of two of parallel stories in one: the first, a flashback to Dean and Sam's first year hunting on their own (as well as trying to avoid hunting, and John in general); the second on how Dean and Cas finally get together during an unusual case and when Dean is able to really let go of his past trauma and accept himself/accept love from Cas. 

What I love about DeanRH’s work is that they write from the unique point of view of a drifter, so they understand living on the road, traveling place to place, and the highs and lows of that life like no others I’ve encountered in SPN before. (The author’s notes are often as much fun to read as the stories themselves). They also write a kickass angel!Cas and never lose sight of his non-human traits and background. Their writing style is unique - almost poetic in nature, and I know some readers have found it difficult to get into. But it works really well for me in their SPN fic...gives it the flavor of oral story telling as might actually happen at a drifter’s camp (with one story written exactly as such). Be warned this particular fic does play up the idea of John Winchester being mentally abusive and Dean having to turn tricks when he was younger in order to support him and Sam, so there is some dark stuff. But as someone who grew up with mentally abusive parent, reading this was extremely cathartic to me and believably written (unlike some stories that go too over the top with abusive John, or just don't understand how that kind of abuse leaves lifetime psychological scars.)

Carnevale by DeanRH (18k) - Actually the first fic by this author I read, because I just couldn’t resist a story set in my favorite place in the world, Venice, Italy. Castiel is the Angel of Venice, banished there for so long he does not even know or remember the reasons why. But Carnevale season is the one time a year he can let his wings out - figuratively and literally. And during this particular Carnevale season, he meets an intriguing masked young American tourist there with his brother and their one night stand turns into something far more powerful than either expected. This one’s hot, romantic, and achingly sad at the end as it all ties together unexpectedly with canon-verse...though with a hint for the future so it’s definitely not totally sad. I loved how DeanRH clearly understands Venice as a fellow lover of the city, the side of it most tourists never see unless they spend a long time there. This story made me cry just from wanting to be back in Venice again.

Ice cream was sweeter, food more satisfying, everything was an epicurean delight. There was just something magical about Venice, and he had lived here in the city for hundreds of years, so the shine should have worn off by now.

But it didn't, and there was always something more, something wonderful to discover around the next corner. The painted eaves of a church. The beauty of two women dancing with flowers in their teeth across the Piazza San Marco one day, overcome by the sheer joy of just being there. The way the university students still created Venetian masks, like Castiel's extravagant volto mask and Dean's humble servetta muta, with crafts that had been handed down across the generations. The morning silence that lay against the stones.

Hard Landing by DeanRH (26.9k) - A bit similar in theme to Carnevale. A pre-series Dean and Sam are sight-seeing in Spain when an angel, struck by a babel-spell, crash lands right in front of Dean. A strange yet seriously hot encounter with the angel turns into something much more complicated when the brothers return home and realize something more serious is afoot and they are both trapped in the middle of it. This is another story where things are very much not as they seem at first (as fun as that is!) It features master strategist Cas at his best, with a side helping of delightful trickery care of Gabriel and Balthazar as they deal with Lucifer, Michael...and a few others along the way.

The Sacred Band of Thebes by DeanRH (14.5k) - The last DeanRH fic I’m gonna allow myself to include in this round up, because it’s just very soft and sweet and beautiful - for a story about Dean & Cas being magically transported back in time to ancient Sparta! This is another story infused with a great knowledge of place and history, with some wonderfully delightful original characters added in that make it all the more enjoyable to read.

And now on to some other authors, I promise!

IPAMIS OL OLPRIT by emmbrancsxx0 (56k). A really wonderful fic that take a different look at what might have happened with a temporarily resurrected John Winchester during Season 14. Dean & Cas are in an established relationship here, and John here isn’t too happy about it — though mostly because he sees Cas (and Jack) as monsters, the kind of monsters he spent his lifetime hunting. This is a great fic for the emotional complexity of how John, Dean and Cas are all handled. John isn’t a cardboard evil dad, Dean is struggling between his loyalty to his father and to Cas, and Cas is increasingly bitchy/frustrated at Dean still being so desperate for his father’s approval (and all the more complex for not just being a quietly suffering perfect supporting boyfriend.) There’s some great action sequences in this too along with the emotional angst and a delicious dose of hurt!Cas if that’s your thing (as it is for me :D)

Abrenuntio by Neonbat (51k). A very dark but compelling AU take on the/a apocalypse universe. Dean, Sam and John are all alive in this post-angel war-apocalyptic world. They are part of a group of human survivors fighting against the angel army when they manage to capture “Blue” — a particularly feared angel of death. Dean is tasked with bringing Blue in for interrogation and he becomes a prisoner in their camp after John is killed. As mentioned, this is a pretty dark/sad fic (with some rather gruesome torture scenes) but I still found it quite compelling as a look at how things could have gone in some other parallel universe. And somehow the author manages to make the Dean/Cas relationship come together despite them starting out as complete enemies. This is one of those AUs that works for me because the core of the characters really shine through despite the differences in the setting.

if it all fell to pieces tomorrow by spocklee (37k) - a gorgeous post-Empty rescue fic that takes an approach I haven’t really seen explored in detail before (despite being something I’ve actually thought about as something that could’ve happened.) What if Cas has spent so long denying himself happiness, and then trapped in regrets and false-rescue scenarios created by the Empty, that he can’t trust that his rescue is real? And so he runs off to be on his own - literally stealing the Impala because he can’t handle being in Dean’s presence one moment longer - and only slowly comes to terms with the idea that it’s over now and he can be happy with/around his friends and family. This one’s both deliciously angsty and at times funny/sweet, looking at Cas’s relationships not just with Dean but with Sam, Jack, Claire, even Eileen. It does some fun stuff with other returned angels and demons who now find themselves back on Earth (and human), and...I just really enjoyed this one a lot.

Both Saved and Lost by angelfishofthelord (13.7k) Gen Cas character study, absolutely gorgeous and sad and one of those fic I couldn’t stop thinking about the day after reading it. AU where Apocaverse!Cas isn’t immediately killed by our Cas during 13x22 but instead hitches a ride back to the main ‘verse. Dean and Sam want to keep him alive for information on Michael; Cas is torn and trying to figure out just how similar—or different—they really are. Some great angel stuff here (I also highly recommend this author’s Jack & Cas “dadstiel” fics, they’re equally lovely and heartbreaking at the same time.)

flesh of the mighty by Mudprophet (2.7k) - THEE “What exactly did Dean eat in Purgatory, anyway?” fic you’ve probably already heard about. *cough* I’ve been trying to work up the courage to read this one for a while and finally gave in and OH MY CHUCK I’m so glad I did. It’s perversely disturbing and beautiful at the same time, Cas is wonderfully DERANGED and ALIEN in that way that I love it when fics managed to convey just how much angels are NOT human. Do heed the tags.

Full of Grace by ilovehowyouletmefall (11k) - Another one for the weird-as-fuck-angel!Cas lovers’ list. Heaven/canon-compliant fic where Dean knows he should feel happy and at peace but he just...isn’t, even with Cas and all of his friends and family there. He finally goes looking for Cas when he’s been absent for a time and, for the first time, gets to not just see but experience his true form. Another one that hits some kinks I knew I had and others I didn’t...until now. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

don't ask me where i've been by saltwound / @1x06 (8k) - I can never resist a good 09x06 fiction gap fic! What makes this one really stand out is how well it captures Cas’s internal voice - his struggles adapting to human senses, limitations and emotions versus what/how he experienced things as an angel. It’s an alternative take on where Cas might have ended up after leaving the bunker and features some great Cas & Sam friendship feels, when Sam sets out to try to bring Cas home. It’s all the stuff you’d wish the writers would’ve let them talk out in canon.

Well I spent far too long on this, but it was fun. 

A - Ships that you currently like a lot I mostly read Stucky. They got me into this mess and I’ll love them forever :) I like Geraskier a lot, which is definitely @witcherling‘s fault. I love Carol/Maria, although I haven’t read a ton (hint hint we need moooooore). I love good, interesting friendships with Steve & Nat and Bucky & Nat. I love stories that explore Steve’s relationship with Wanda post CACW. I love reading Sam when he’s developed beyond a caretaker or helpful friend with no actual personality of his own and Tony when he’s developed beyond an asshole literally only present to antagonize Steve. 

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind. I loved Geralt and Jaskier’s dynamic in the show and that mountain scene made me cry, but I don’t think I’d have sought out fanfiction or really shipped them without @witcherling​ ‘s intervention. When I love a writer, I’ll read damn near anything they write, and now I’m fully immersed and reblogging witcher shit and I’m not really sure what happened but here we are.

J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. I haven’t watched The Magicians, but tumblr posts make me want to ship Queliot a little. Not sure if I should watch the show or just look at two lovely boys kissing and/or pining when they show up on my dash. Honestly most MCU pairings didn’t cross my mind until I saw them here. Stucky jumped out of the movies and slapped me in the face with WE ARE CLEARLY IN LOVE so lots of other ships are just...odd...to me. But ship and let ship, y’all. If it makes you happy, write it!

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc? Bucky? His actual arc gets pretty fucked by the MCU, but I do really love the idea that love transcends violence and pain and time and ultimately helps him find his way back to himself. I love fic that explores that, but lets him do the heavy lifting of his own recovery (vs. Steve fixing him with his super soldier dick). 

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend. SHURI PLEASE BE MY FRIEND! I will awkwardly stand in the corner of your lab and be amazed and try not to ask obnoxious questions every two seconds. She is the coolest and I want to hang out with her. She could be jaded or spoiled or pampered but instead she OWNS that she is always the smartest in the room and uses that to help people and help her country. She doesn’t take shit and she owns her intelligence and I love her. 

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice). Realistic depictions of mental health issues and recovery and therapy, bi and pan representation that goes beyond off-handedly mentioning a random person is attractive, non-binary and trans representation period (but especially stories where gender identity isn’t THE THING, but merely one part of who the character is).

O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of? I’m recently obsessed with Hozier which is also @witcherling’s fault (really throwing you under the proverbial bus today, I suppose) and NFWMB definitely gives me stucky vibes. 

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas). uhhhh... something with Steve having a big brother-ish relationship with Wanda and maybe him and Bucky bond over that… Bucky feels similarly protective of his sister and they meet because maybe Wanda and Rebecca are friends and these two giant beefcakes bond over their extreme softness and incredible love for these two young women? I love fics with Geralt and Ciri and Jaskier… maybe Jaskier teaches guitar lessons (lute lessons? I don’t know there’s a reason I don’t really write) and he has a major crush on his fave student’s super hot dad but doesn’t want to make it weird? I’m tired I did my best *shrug*

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending? I have lots of headcanons but none are really so rigid that I can’t consider other viewpoints or read fic where things are different. I think Bucky knew he loved Steve before Steve understood what his love for Bucky meant. After watching CATFA far too many times, I’m not sure that Steve knew what all his BIG BUCKY FEELINGS meant until he lost him. But I still love love love reading pre-war stucky where they’re all sweet and and in love and having glorious sex in their shared apartment. 

V - Which character do you relate to most?

hmmm this one is tough. Bucky is my favorite character in the history of everything, but it’s not like I have lots in common with him. Bucky is wildly competent; the things he is/wants/need to be good at, he steadfastly devotes himself to and his loyalty and love for the few things he really, truly cares about is unshakable. I’m passionate but that passion gets strewn about across too many things; I really admire Bucky’s quiet devotion to what he loves and his ability to become fucking great at what he needs to be good at. Steve being ready to fight the entire world to protect Bucky is hella relatable.

The formula of the modern cartoon

WARNING: LONG POST AHEAD!

All shows have some kind of formula. Some, like Phineas and Ferb, make it more obvious than others. But they all have one. I'll use Star vs the Forces of Evil as an example for this post because it seems to have all the elements I will talk about.

First, you have your pilot episode (Star Comes to Earth). This is the introduction to your characters and your world. Usually, the pilot takes place on the occasion of a big change in the protagonist's life. This is different from 2000's cartoons, which are mostly all slice of life and will usually premiere on just a normal day in the life of the characters.

Next, you have season 1a (Party with a Pony thru Sleep Spells). These episodes are mainly slice of life, with low stakes, minor villains, and simple plots. They serve the purpose of introducing more of the characters and the world that the show will take place in, as well as getting you invested in the show. There might be one or two episodes where the stakes are very high (Mewberty), but all in all, this will be a glimpse at day-to-day life in this universe.

Then you have the mid-season finale (Blood Moon Ball and Fortune Cookies). This episode will introduce the main conflict of the series. In this case, BMB introduced the main romantic conflict, while FC introduced the main villain. The protagonists will come out mostly unscathed, but the villain will not be dead. They will merely bide their time until the season finale, which I will explain in a minute.

Next, you have season 1b (Freeze Day thru Interdimensional Field Trip). Again, the stakes will be relatively low, but this is when things can begin to have consequences. Characters might reference the events of previous episodes, they might meet up with old friends (or enemies), and there might be some lasting effects from the mid-season finale. There will also be some lead-up to the season finale (i.e. Buff Frog getting fired in Mewnipendance Day).

Next we have the pre-finale episode (Marco Grows a Beard). Usually, this one starts out as a normal episode, but it will throw in a twist ending that leads into the finale. In this case, that twist ending was Ludo getting fired.

Now we're finally at the finale. In the finale, there will likely be new (usually temporary) alliances; the protagonist will team up with someone (often their original enemy) to take down a common foe (the villain who first showed up in the mid-season finale). In this case, Ludo and Buff Frog both attempted to team up with Star against Toffee. Any main conflict introduced in the midseason finale is going to be addressed again here. In this case, this episode addressed both the battle against Toffee AND Star's love for Marco.

The second season will premiere with an episode dealing with the aftermath of the finale (Ludo in the Wild) and introducing the new normal (My New Wand!) The new normal will be pretty similar to the old normal for our protagonists, with a few minor changes that make everything more complicated. The antagonist, though, will be dealt a major setback that they will have to work past.

It will take the antagonist at least half the season to get back in the game, leaving the show with enough time to do a few more "normal" episodes (Mr. Candle Cares thru Page Turner). This time, more and more actions will have consequences, and several subplots will begin or continue. (Star vs seems to alternate between the romantic stuff and the villains lurking just beneath the surface, so these plot points include Marco and Jackie's friendship blossoming, Tom trying to make up for whatever caused his breakup with Star, Star learning more about her family history, Ludo fighting his way through the wilderness and amassing a new army, and hints of Toffee's return.) There will also be continuations of minor subplots from season 1, including: Marco's rivalry with Jeremy, Britney's rivalry with Star, Marco teaching Star about earth life, Glossaryck teaching Star more about magic, Janna harassing Marco, etc. Enemies will become friends. Friends will become enemies. The protagonists will mature a little more. Life will continue to happen.

Next, there will be the pre-mid-season 2 finale (Naysaya). I've already talked about the pre-finale episode, so please refer to that description. This time, though, the stakes are higher, and the solution will be harder to implement.

Then there is the mid-season 2 finale (Bon Bon the Birthday Clown). This is where they will make a major change that will take the rest of season 2 to fix (i.e. Ludo stealing Glossaryck and the book of spells). This change will likely be a direct result of the next big move by the antagonist.

Season 2b (Raid the Cave thru Collateral Damage) will look similar to seasons 1 and 2a on the surface, but something will feel different (as a result of the aforementioned big change.) It's clear by now that things will never be quite the same again as they were at the beginning.

Then there will be the season 2 pre-finale (Just Friends) and finale (Face the Music and Starcrushed). The stakes will be even higher than they've ever been, and someone (usually the protagonist) will have to make a very hard choice under a dwindling time frame with very limited information. This will be the beginning of a drastic change in the show (in Star's case, it was moving the main setting of the show to Mewni.)

Any future seasons will probably follow a very similar formula. The premiere will see the aftermath of the previous season's finale, as well as giving us more information about what was going on. The villain of the season will rise up early, strike in the mid-season finale, gain power throughout the season, and lay down a crushing blow in the season finale. The rest of the episodes will be reflective of the new status quo. Other subplots will come and go as the writers dictate.

In season 3's case, The Battle For Mewni (which could have easily been the series finale) was the premiere that nicely wrapped up Toffee's (and Ludo's) storylines. Meteora was the main villain. She rose up early in season 3 (Princess Turdina), struck in the midseason finale (Monster Bash), grew in power for a few episodes pre-finale (Skooled! and Tough Love), and delivered her final blow in the finale (Divide and Conquer). They also kept the other major plot going by having Star and Tom rekindle their relationship (starting in Club Snubbed) while still giving hints that Star was pining for Marco (culminating in Booth Buddies).

In season 4's case, the premiere (Butterfly Follies and Escape From the Pie Folk) and the post-premiere (Moon Remembers) dealt with the aftermath of the season 3 finale. Mina and the MHC were the villains. Mina rose up early (Down by the River), they were shown at work in both subplots of Junkin' Janna (Mina by stealing the boot from Janna and Tom, the MHC by wasting Eclipsa and Star's time), the MHC struck in Cornonation, and it all came together in the series pre-finale (Gone Baby Gone) and the finale (Sad Teen Hotline thru Cleaved).

Other things of note as the series progresses:

Finales and premieres are often multiple part episodes, and the chances of this get higher as the series goes on. For example, Storm the Castle directly led into Ludo in the Wild and indirectly led into My New Wand! Bon Bon the Birthday Clown indirectly led into Raid the Cave. Just Friends indirectly led into Face the Music, which itself indirectly led into Starcrushed, which directly led into The Battle For Mewni. Then each episode in The Battle For Mewni, while telling a different chapter of the story, picked up where the last one left off. Tough Love, Divide, Conquer, Butterfly Follies, Escape From the Pie Folk and Moon Remembers all tell one continuous story. And Sad Teen Hotline thru Cleaved also tell one continuous story.

The stakes get progressively higher as we learn more about the world. In Blood Moon Ball, all Marco did was ruin Star's night at the dance. In Storm the Castle, Toffee nearly killed Marco. In Bon Bon the Birthday Clown, Ludo kidnapped Glossaryck and stole Star's family history, and nearly killed Star, Marco, Jackie and Janna in the process. In The Battle For Mewni, Ludofee actually took over Mewni for a short time and ruled with an iron fist (or in his case, a wand hand), and he levitato-ed anyone who stood in his way. In Divide and Conquer, Meteora went on a rampage, destroying Mewni and sucking everyone's souls. And in the series finale, Mina tried to kill all the monsters in Mewni, as well as Star, Marco, Moon, River, and Eclipsa.

The tone gradually becomes darker as the characters mature. Season 1 Star was cute, naive, and goofy, while season 4 Star was serious, smarter and focused. Season 1 Star didn't take Ludo all that seriously, while season 4 Star worked tirelessly to defend monsters from the likes of Mina and the Magic High Commission.

Slice of life episodes, as well as special occasion episodes, can be inserted anywhere. Occasionally there will be a break episode in the later seasons (i.e. Stump Day and Holiday Spellcial). This episode will often feel out of place.

A villain who appeared in season 1 (whether that is the original villain or the one who became a threat in the midseason finale) will continue to be present throughout the series. Their plot may go in a different direction, but they will still be there. (In this case, that villain is Ludo.)

What I say in this post isn't just true of Star vs the Forces of Evil. It's true of many cartoons these days. Some other examples with a similar structure include Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Milo Murphy's Law, and Adventure Time, among others.

kiss me once, kiss me twice - a series for kiss prompts!! so sweet. this one has some really heartwarming modern au installments that i just adore

something new for me and you - this one recently wrapped up! a good multichapter, probably the peak modern urban au in the tag. very detailed and has some very good themes about like… feeling love and feeling deserving of relationships and having to grapple with being bond to the people you’re close to. ALSO has background claysol which you KNOW i’m a BIG SUCKER for. very charming!

*indelible - modern au! tattoo parlor stuff, which can be very hit or miss for me, but this was such a sweet, lovely au with a lot of like. recovery stuff in it? for both of them. very nice.

*meet me in the woods - OOF this has such such delicious piiiining… yearning! molly Noticing caleb’s hands and the two of them slowly growing closer. it was such a sweet read and i enjoyed the whole thing like a soft blanket.

*boats and birds - i love this! such a great snapshot of molly (swinging from the ropes on the ball eater, and being a bit reckless & unlucky in his circus tricks - that’s my bitch!), and such a lovely, telling interaction between him and caleb. i loved that “did you just tell a joke? well, it was a good one” bit, and i love fics that revisit it with a bit more future tenderness. this is the line that won me completely over to this fic:

Because Molly is an idiot and likes to pretend that he has a chance of breaking through the ten layers of trauma Caleb wears like a second skin to find the person underneath and convince him he’s worth something, he takes a minute to appreciate the view.

*matryoshka - immediate fixit after molly’s death, which rules. molly’s ghost gets to carpool in caleb’s body before they rez him. i think this scenario was written enjoyably but with appropriate weight as well, which could be very hard to find. pre-relationship, which i always enjoy - i love me some people meandering towards feelings. it also has some very interesting lucien theory tidbits sprinkled in, which i enjoy.

*cat magnet - molly gets turned into a cat for a hot minute and cuddles up to caleb. short and fun and not weird (thank goodness).

*devil’s tongue - i’m always a bit bashful/hesitant about reccing explicit stuff, but this one has such excellent and caring characterization that i feel correct in putting it on this list. the best explicit ship fics always have an element of knowing that the characters aren’t losing their personalities once they get in bed, and this one has both characters as like. people. the d/s stuff does not overwhelm the characters or the fic and is very light - you see that these are real people in an equal relationship trying to help each other feel good (and i’m a judgmental bastard about fic, so you can take my word on this). AND it has some linguistic stuff about infernal as the actual plot, which i can be a sucker for.

*a thin line - molly gets injured, caleb sews him up, they dance around a conversation before actually Talking About Stuff and becoming closer. excellently written h/c. this is an early wdmk fic, but actually writes the characters pretty well in hindsight! op rules. it’s interesting to see what the author manages to get right, and the backstory elements they made up are still engaging and consistent for the molly & caleb they have written.

*heartfrost - molly lives au, taking place around ep 72. molly is resistant to fire, so he’s vulnerable to cold. he has a bad time with that, and with grieving for yasha as well. caleb takes care of him. this was just sweet h/c whump, and reading molly getting his feelings validated by caleb was *kisses fingers* very good.

*limerence - caleb accidentally casts a spell that makes everyone who sees him fall in love with him - except the party lesbians and… molly, for some reason. isn’t it strange that a love spell doesn’t alter molly’s behavior towards caleb??? synopsis aside - i really enjoy how this fic took the fact that molly canonically wouldn’t pursue caleb because he sees caleb isn’t in a good place to have that; molly’s respect for consent with regards to relationships shines through here and agh i love him. also, i am beau in this fic.

**VWOOP! (every time a bell rings, a tiefling gets their wings) - a really interesting take on the soulmate au involving true name stuff (the author has some notes at the end about “true names” which made me :) about the concept in terms of identity and meaning, so dw about deadname snarls yk). wings! soulmates! friends with benefits that accidentally evolve into feelings!

**the fool, reversed - i’m a hack who loves to see molly slotted into present canon just for fun. this one has him being abducted with yasha by obann, and in dealing with the trauma afterward accidentally discovering his incorporeality bloodhunter powers. good stuff.

**the skin beneath the facade - this one is so self indulgent and i love it. fake dating at a fancy party! kissing! POISON! A CAT! fun fun fun read.

WIPs that i am subscribed to and really enjoy, and are good reads already: 

the prophet of tortham - LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS ONE… god i just love it. molly scrambling to be the best scammer he can and rolling miracuously well, while trying to solve a mystery! very perceptive caleb and perfectly slow burn widomauk. it’s an au where molly pretends to be an actual fortuneteller to a lord that the rest of the m9 work for. i’ve been adoring this one so far, such a great molly.

there’s a ghost in my lungs - vague future canon! the m9 finds molly again, but the empire put a bunch of stuff in his head and the gang seeks to cure him, all while getting tangled up in a town plot and festivals. very good widomauk pining. side note: the “winter soldier au” tag has nothing to do with marvel at all besides the basic premise of what’s up with molly, but for the vast majority of the fic he is himself (changed somewhat after what he’s gone through, but his wonderful self). i’ve been keeping up with this one for a long time and i’ve been loving it.

Caleb blinks, as if coming out of a Frumpkin trance. Beau knows better, though, she’s seen him staring at Molly like Molly’s a lighthouse in the dark, and he’s a man paddling desperately back to shore.

we circle by night - a far-flung-future caleb travels back in time and accidentally averts molly’s death! and there’s a splintered timeline. slow burn widomauk starts kindling but caleb’s dealing with uh… pretending he’s not an older and higher-level wizard inside a canon age caleb body. VERY good. love it.

fractured moonlight on the sea - molly is a selkie and doesn’t know it!! i looooooove this so far and can’t wait for more, this is such good like… pining for stuff you don’t know, romantically and sealwise.

map to alexandria - modern music au! very good writing of like. human emotions. very good relationship themes. this is my good buddy mauve @phantomsteed‘s fave fic!

the gay and wondrous life of caleb widogast - this is a modern with magic childhood friends road trip au! it is also fjollygast, and i really enjoyed it. extremely good and well-written pining and relationship drama, that luckily has been resolved. from what i’ve detectived, it seems like it’s been put on permanent hiatus after canon has diverged a lot from what the author was working from. but it stopped at a very good point and is a fave. extremely delicious pining.

wilderswans’ 30 day nsfw challenge - this is such a great series with a lot of character work and like… stuff about intimacy and it’s really good and tender! early relationship. really sweet and well-written!

So here we are! UraIchi Week 2018 will take place:

Monday, May 28, 2018 - Sunday, June 3, 2018.

What is UraIchi Week?

Basically, it’s a week-long event to promote the Urahara Kisuke x Kurosaki Ichigo ship. There’s no sign-up, it’s just for fun, and everybody’s welcome to participate. Hopefully by the end of the week, there’ll be plenty more works for UraIchi shippers to enjoy. What I want for this event is just for UraIchi shippers to enjoy new material, maybe chat a bit, and hopefully add some life to a somewhat dead rarepair that I happen to adore.

What kind of stuff would be accepted for this event?

Fics, fanart, graphics, moodboards, gifsets, fanmixes, and playlists are all welcome. Headcanons and meta too. So long as it’s focused on UraIchi, pretty much anything goes. The pair itself can be written romantically or platonically, pre-relationship or established, basically anything you want so long as it involves these two idiots.

Posting:

For those of you with Tumblr, you can tag your stuff with #UraIchi Week or #UraIchi Week 2018 in the first five tags of your post. I’ll be tracking those two tags so I’ll see it and reblog it to this blog. (If it’s been a couple days since you posted and I still haven’t reblogged it, something probably went wrong, Tumblr’s not always reliable, so just shoot me an ask about it and I’ll reblog it.)

It’s your choice whether or not you want to make a fanwork that includes all the themes of that day, or a fanwork for each theme, or a fanwork for just one. You can make something for each day of the week or just one or two. Likewise, you are fully welcome to create fanworks based on any genre or AU you can think of. The official themes are only suggestions. WIPs are perfectly okay too.

May 28: Day 1 - Time Travel | Dimension Travel | Fix-It

Probably to no one’s surprise, Time Travel was the most popular choice of all the themes. I’ve combined it with Dimension Travel and Fix-It, but of course, you don’t have to include all three in the same fanwork. Prompts with Ichigo travelling back in time, or Urahara during his assassin tenure travelling forward to Ichigo’s present day, or both of them dimension-hopping to a world where the Gotei 13 is in the middle of a civil war, all fit into these categories.

May 29: Day 2 - Soulmates AU | Daemons AU | Wings AU

Also probably to no one’s surprise, Soulmates came in second. I’ve thrown Daemons AU and Wings AU onto this day too since they’re similar enough to combine if you wish (or not if you don’t). Here you could find soulmates with matching soulmarks, soulmates connected by a red string of fate, or soulmates who can only see each other’s wings. Or maybe you want to explore an inverted AU where Urahara and Ichigo are not each other’s soulmates but their daemons spend an inordinate amount of time together anyway and refuse to be separated. Anything related to any of these three AUs goes!

May 30: Day 3 - SOMETHING!Ichigo and/or SOMETHING!Urahara | Creatures & Monsters/Supernatural Elements AU

Feel free to go wild with this one. Soul King!Ichigo? Let’s see what he does with the world. Arrancar!Urahara? He’d never work for Aizen so maybe when Ichigo storms Hueco Mundo, he ends up saving a half-feral monster from the dungeons, and God help any Shinigami who suggests putting him down like some kind of rabid dog. Or maybe you’d prefer a whole universe of supernatural creatures. Vampire!Urahara and werewolf!Ichigo? Angel!Ichigo and demon!Urahara? World’s biggest cliches right there but they’re cliches for a reason.

May 31: Day 4 - Mutual (or Not) Pining | Alternate First Meeting and/or Getting Together | Outsider POV

Day 4 is more slice of life than the rest. Meet-cutes or love at first sight, Urahara pining away after an oblivious Ichigo, or Ichigo determinedly courting a confused Urahara. Or maybe you want a glimpse of these two idiots from another person’s perspective. Maybe Zangetsu and Benihime get together to try and make their wielders fall in love. Maybe Ichigo and Urahara have been together for a while and eventually their friends begin wondering when those two became close enough to share whole conversations with a glance. Or maybe the Soutaichou has had it up to here with Urahara making things explode because he’s too busy moping over what he thinks is unrequited love to get his shit together enough to actually do his work, so he sets his entire military organization with the task of getting two of the most stubborn morons to have ever lived together. They’re all at least several hundred years old. It can’t be that hard, right?

June 1: Day 5 - Crossovers | Fusions

I personally wasn’t too surprised that a good chunk of votes went to Crossovers and Fusions. Fancy a Hunger Games AU fusion with the Gotei 13 making up the Capitol, Urahara as a mentor or a stylist, and Ichigo as a volunteer tribute? Or maybe a Pacific Rim AU fusion with Ichigo and co. signing up to fight Kaiju. How about a crossover with Naruto where Ichigo and Urahara find themselves in the Naruto world and they end up rebuilding Uzushio? Or maybe you prefer a crossover with Harry Potter where Urahara is hired as the new History professor and Ichigo the new Defence professor, and holy hell - as they discover - there’s a lot of shady things going on in the Wizarding world.

June 2: Day 6 - Canon Divergence | For Want of a Nail AU | Ichigo vs. Gotei 13 | Apocalypse AU

Post-Winter War, Ichigo never regaining his powers and leaving town as soon as he graduates? Pre-Turn Back the Pendulum Arc, Urahara starts receiving anonymous letters about what Aizen is up to and manages to prevent Shinji and the others from becoming Visored? Aizen wins and ends up bringing about the apocalypse? The Shinigami ‘cleaning up’ and ordering the execution of all non-Shinigami after Aizen is defeated? Give me all the what-if scenarios here.

June 3: Day 7 - Colours | Single-Word Prompts

To be honest, neither of these two themes had a particularly large amount of votes but I wanted to reserve one day for prompts geared more towards artists and those who maybe write better with specific word prompts than general AUs. So, Colours are pretty self-explanatory - pick a colour and make a moodboard or put together a gifset of UraIchi moments. Of course, writers can also work around this - a dozen red roses delivered to Ichigo’s doorstep one day, or five times Ichigo gave Urahara a different green hat and the first time Kisuke stops wearing one around him.

As for single-word prompts, there were people who wanted to come up with their own words, but also people who asked for me to come up with a list for them, so I’ve decided to include a google doc with a list of words here. You can click through or not, it’s up to you.

And that’s it! I hope everybody will have fun with this! I really want this to be a success so get those creative minds in gear and start preparing for the event. Two months actually isn’t that long. How did they first meet?

At Grady Memorial Hospital, right after Beth was... you know. Abby was the only one to step forward and join Rick’s group. So, not the best circumstances.

What was their first impression of each other?

Abby’s first impression of Daryl was him killing Dawn and then carrying Beth’s dead body out of that hospital, so uh,, I think the takeaway from that was “this man has a lot going on right now, I will give him his space” lmao

As for Daryl, his first impression of Abby would technically be him being the only person in that hospital to step forward and take Rick up on his offer, but Daryl had a lot going on just then so I don’t think he would notice Abby like at all. His proper first impression would come later, during the trip to Richmond; he probably thought Abby was an idiot who talked too much.

Did any of their friends or family want them to get together?

Aaron and Eric in particular know all about Abby’s crush from basically the moment it exists and they’re very tickled by it. Tara would figure it out too, probably because Denise -- who works with Abby -- tells her about Abby stammering and going pink when Daryl took his shirt off for a checkup. Abby’s not subtle so I imagine most of the group knows or suspects to varying degrees; all except Daryl, of course.

Who felt romantic feelings first?

Abby has a crush on Daryl literally within a month of meeting him, so. Abby. Daryl takes much longer to catch up.

Did either of them try to resist their feelings?

Abby probably does once it (apparently) becomes clear that Daryl won’t or can’t reciprocate. Daryl definitely does, both because a) that internalized homophobia hits hard and b) Daryl has so many self worth issues, holy shit. He pulls that “he deserves someone better than me” bullshit for a disconcertingly long time.

If you had told one of them that the other would be their soulmate, what would they think?

Abby would be like “what? that dude? really? he’s not straight?” and Daryl would be like “very fuckin’ funny” and then deck you

Who initiated the relationship, and how did it go?

It would have to be Abby. I can’t see Daryl broaching the subject himself; if it were up to him, they’d pine for the rest of their lives. It would probably look something like them being quiet and alone together somewhere, maybe a rooftop, and then Abby going, “If I tried to kiss you right now, would you push me off this roof?” Kinda playfully but also Not.

Daryl looks quietly at him for a long minute before shaking his head, just slightly. Abby exhales shakily. “Okay,” he says, and kisses him.

Did they have an official first date? If so, what was it like?

Daryl probably wouldn’t care one way or another but Abby would definitely want to take him out on a “date.” Daryl thinks he’s gonna hate it but it just turns out to be a small candlelit dinner or something sweet like that that’s kind of overwhelming for Daryl anyway. It might freak him out, actually! Whoops.

What was their first kiss like?

Kind of tentative and feeling it out. Short and sweet. The second one was better.

Were they each other’s first anything (kiss, relationship, etc.)?

Abby is Daryl’s first relationship with another man :3c

What’s their height difference? Age difference?

Abby is 6′1″ and Daryl is 5′10″, a fact that lowkey rankles at him lmao. Age difference is ~a decade

Abby’s entire family live in Montana, providing they aren’t dead, so there’s no way for them to meet Daryl, rip. Abby never met Merle, either. They are each other’s families, bro! Abby fits into the group very well.

Who takes the lead in social situations?

Abby, most of the time. He’s naturally talkative and pretty personable. And Daryl is Daryl.

Who gets jealous easier?

Daryl, 100%. See aforementioned self-worth issues.

I don’t think that’s really for either of them, tho I could see Abby doing it if he were tipsy and feeling flirty. Daryl carries him home with a brick red face.

Abby. He has no reservations about saying it that first time or saying it often. He doesn’t like to embarrass Daryl though so he’ll say it quietly or mouth it to him if they’re among other people. It’s just for him, anyway.

What are their primary love languages?

Abby likes quality time and physical touch, and Daryl’s are acts of service and quality time. They spend a lot of time together doing different things, where Abby will slowly inch over to Daryl until he’s snuggled up against him.

Who uses cheesy pick-up lines?

ABBY. Daryl never gives him the satisfaction of laughing, but he has had to duck his head to hide a smile before. Mostly he thinks it’s goofy and embarrassing, which is exactly what Abby is going for.

How often do they cuddle/engage in PDA?

PDA is pretty rare for them beyond holding hands and the occasional quick kiss, usually saying hello or goodbye. They only get really affectionate when they’re alone together. Daryl is a cuddler. This knowledge CANNOT get out. (Their friends all know and pretend they don’t.)

Who initiates kisses?

Abby, most of the time, though I’d say it’s a pretty even split when they’re alone/feeling comfortable.

Who’s the big and little spoon?

Daryl is the big spoon, Abby is the little spoon. Daryl likes to protect.

What are their favorite things to do together?

Abby likes to cook, Daryl likes to watch him cook because it’s always a massive production. He’ll help when he’s allowed, but Abby’s a control freak in the kitchen and he absolutely does not trust Daryl’s cooking. The man thinks raw squirrel is a tasty treat.

Who’s better at comforting the other?

I think Abby is better at doing it verbally and being sensitive to Daryl’s moods, but Daryl would comfort through action. And I mean, his presence alone is comforting to Abby, so he doesn’t have to do much. Abby will be nervous until Daryl enters the room, and then he’s calm.

Who’s more protective?

Daryl, definitely.

Do they prefer verbal or physical affection?

Physical, though Abby will definitely pair it with murmured affection. I just think someone should tell Daryl that he is handsome and kind and good.

What kind of nicknames do they call each other?

Abby is a nickname, but everyone calls him it. They’re not really the pet names type, though Abby will sometimes call Daryl honey or baby. He pretends not to like it. He really does.

Who remembers the little things?

Daryl, I think! Of the two of them, Abby is more scatterbrained. Daryl strikes me as the type who’s surprisingly thoughtful, even if just in little ways.

If they get married, who proposes?

Oh god. Oh god, it’d be Daryl who proposes. Oh I never thought about it until this moment and now I’m emotional

What’s the wedding like? Who attends?

It would be a very small ceremony, if even that. Just them and their family having a party to celebrate Abby and Daryl finally getting hitched. Abby is a mess basically the whole night, he’s so happy. Lots of good food and laughter and just joy. A very good night for all of them.

How many kids do they have, if any? What are they like?

I actually don’t know if they’d have kids. I think they’re very happy with the family they have, and don’t really feel any need to expand it. Judith is their kid, and RJ, and the rest of the little ones in their family group. Uncle Daryl and Uncle Abby...

Do they have any pets?

Oh yes. There’s Dog, who Abby spoils rotten, and Abby’s always been a cat person so they probably have one or two cats running around their home too.

Who’s the stricter parent?

In this instance we’re talking about pet parents, so definitely Daryl. “You’ll make him fat,” he says to Abby as he not-so-discreetly slips Dog some scraps under the table.

“I don’t know what you mean,” Abby says innocently as Dog chomps on his snack very loudly.

Who worries the most?

I actually think they both worry a lot about each other, but Abby is definitely the more vocal of the two. For Daryl concern looks like checking Abby over to make sure he’s okay and maybe holding him very tightly once he’s sure. For Abby it looks like incessant pacing, fretting, and teary relief when Daryl turns up okay. He worries the most about day-to-day things, too.

Who kills the bugs in the house?

Daryl. Abby will stand on a chair and order him around from safety, thank you very much.

How do they celebrate holidays?

With their family. :)

Who’s more likely to convince the other to come back to sleep in the morning?

If Abby is being whiny and clingy it’s 50/50 whether Daryl will give in with an indulgent sigh or pry him off him to get up, but if it’s Daryl doing the convincing Abby will give in every single time. All Daryl has to do is sling an arm around him and nuzzle in and go “stay” in a raspy voice in Abby’s ear and Abby forgoes all plans he had for that whole morning. It’s a great and terrible power Daryl wields.

Who’s the better cook?

Abby. This goes without saying.

Who likes to dance?

Again, Abby. He’ll shimmy at work or twirl in the kitchen and Daryl will watch him with warm, fond eyes.
