3: more fem mako thoughts but makorrasami love triangle/eventual polycule(?) except they’re all girls. I just feel like the pining after your team captain who you now do know is gay except it’s because she’s dating a rich girl who’s also very hot is just a whole lot more fun than what they had going on in canon because. girls but sports au. sooo in love w that. also I don’t think makorra would get together in b1 like canon did for a couple reasons. for one, the girl trauma in addition to general trauma of being a homeless orphan. touch and gestures of affection from a person she doesn’t know well yet would probably be a no-no, and korra seems like a very touchy person, just in the natural way that her space is yours and your space is hers. also her energy? like obviously mako would come around but korra in b1 is so much more excited about the world than mako and I think that would kind of, like, intimidate her. (<-also reasons makorra could’ve worked later on but not when they happened) but as the series progresses, korra mellows and mako gets used to her. it works.

but then how does masami happen so early? because asami is the moon to korra’s sun. she’s calm and a careful thinker and after korra’s exuberance breaks down mako’s walls a little bit, asami would be able to slip in being everything mako imagines herself wanting. also more than financially stable. so masami becomes a thing, and korra is jealous, but she’s not sure of who which I personally think is so funny

Hi! 54 and 65 for the fic writer's asks, please!

ahhhh thank you for your interest!!! 54. my absolute favorite part of the process is getting feedback because the brain chemicals are unparalleled, but that has less to do with craft, so i will also offer a real answer. my favorite part about writing fic is that i almost exclusively work in alternate-setting AUs, and figuring out who each of the characters and what each of the locations map to and make sense as is super fun for me. in my baldur's gate story, one of the main villains (a cult leader) is a crossfit-influencer in a metal band. in my magic story, it was fun to think about where in the college ecosystem each of those mechanical monsters and the heroes fighting to overthrow them would fit, what kinda fashion they would be into and what hobbies they would have, that kinda thing. those types of details are super fun for me to figure out.

65. the tricky part with this is that while i have an outline for my current project, i hesitate to specify any plot details ahead of time because i'm about to be hitting my readers over the head with a club when my next chapter (currently in beta, sourceless bruises girlies and gays check Ao3 SOON) gets posted. so i want to preserve the drama and uncertainty of the moment in the story right now. but i am very excited to keep working on this story, to be sure. there is also some original fiction i think i will be trying to work on when i finish sourceless bruises, and i am DEFINITELY excited for that, but this is about fic so i'm also going to weasel out of a firm answer to this question on that front. but i will talk about what fic is on the horizon for me. the thing for me is that i don't really have the instinct for drabbles or one-shots; when i have an idea i go all-in on turning it into an Entire Thing (more of these queer feelings... it's probably nothing being an example of one of my bonkers premises which i gave extremely serious, loving care and attention to and took entirely seriously with the exception of a couple gags) and i tend to write novella-length or longer. SO i've had a couple of ideas of fandoms i want to work within and what i want to do with it; fans of mine probably would like that absurd LoK idea i posted about a few weeks ago and while that was meant to be a joke, the more i think about it the more i think it may have legs. i've also been really into wenclair and the empyrean recently in my own reading time so those spaces are very real possibilities for me strike next in. that being said, per the content of each of these answers, expect it to be heavily AU and such like everything else i write, whatever it is.

i couldn't get behind the lesbian ending of lok because it felt like an ass-pull for representation after they both went for the same guy earlier, especially with the cattiness between the women before then. i also couldn't get behind kuvira because she was a cop, and because her character existing implied toph slept with a man (and was also a cop), especially when kuvira also went for men, romantically.

more than that, i'm bothered by the shitty plot, especially the way they threw out basically everything important to the world of atla. atla very strongly supported things like harmony with nature and portrayed much of industrialization as a bad thing for the world (due to both the harm it does to humans AND the harm it does to the environment), but the "better world" of lok is steampunk? only about 100 years or so have passed iirc, and the world has become a completely industrialized, westernized, capitalistic place. it's depressing. the destruction of the avatar cycle combining with that really grossed me out.

plot wise, it just felt infinitely less cohesive and controlled than atla. atla felt like it had things to say (many of them based around social justice and environmental justice), and built a strong story around those things without faltering for even a moment. lok felt like a sloppy anime that clumsily tried to forcibly inject social justice talking points into the plot. it's unfortunate because there are a few impressive character designs and concepts, and i would have loved an atla sequel following a female incarnation of the avatar (and actual, solid gay representation would be nice too), but it just failed to be anything actually impressive, imo.

on the downlow, i kind of feel it paved the way for the steven universe era of cartoons, where children's cartoons are heavily marketed to adults (who they rely on for an audience more than the actual kids the show is meant for) using nostalgic references and weirdly inserted social talking points and instances of representation that feel more like the creators are saying "LOOK HOW STUNNING AND BRAVE AND SUBVERSIVE AND PROGRESSIVE WE ARE" rather than actually trying to tell stories, convey messages they feel strongly about, or represent people authentically. i know a lot of right-wing people use that sort of argument in bad faith, but a lot of these pieces of media with gay representation or therapy talk make me feel like i'm a brand or a market audience rather than a normal type of person.

Two, I think you've got Kuvira and Lin mixed up, but your point is no less valid since I completely understand what you're saying. i think the move to turn toph into a cop was supposed to be a funny little "isn't that crazy that the most rebellious member of the group became a cop?" but it's like, yeah, it is crazy. Two point five? If you want to tell me that Toph isn't a lesbian, I might lose some support but I can kind of understand that. To me, Toph is just a tomboy who doesn't like to be restrained. But at the same time, I also don't think that woman is one to just have sex with a cop, have fucking kids, and ugh. Like, I understand they wanted the fun of writing the offspring of a fan favorite, but honestly? Maybe Lin and Suyin should have just been adopted under some strange circumstances because I have never been able to buy that Toph slept with a man. I think that woman cares about herself and helping out when need be.

Three! Kuvira and Lin being straight is another example that another anon said about the writers not being able to fully commit. You know damn well those women aren't straight and you damn sure didn't draw them for the osa gaze. THAT WAS FOR US.

I NEVER THOUGHT OF THIS

I'll be honest, I wondered how they would go about portraying the future of this world since something that really drew me to it was the necessity of bending. To be a bender was a true boon in the original series. So much so that an entire city functioned off of it. I thought it was so cool the way the fire nation stole the concept of the hot air balloon and were able to create something arguably better around their bending. Bringing more tech advancements into the mix always felt like it would sort of ruin a little of that magic, and to me, it did. Seeing them driving and stuff, I was kind of flat faced. Like nah, what happened to the cool ass animals they ride on and stuff? It definitely took a little bit of the magic away. There had to have been a better way to push the plot into the future (if you really felt so inclined) without completely turning it over on its head.

I stand by the fact that I liked the series, but people often think that means you can't talk crap about it at all, and that's simply not true. But this is. I think what I enjoyed about this continuation was the inclusion of more fight scenes. I liked seeing the different ways people used their bending. I've always loved that. I'm an action gal lmao. what made you ship it? the archetypes (esp korra <33), i thought it had good bones. temporary estrangement and gay awakening, prime subvarieties of friends to lovers. putting meat on the bones thru fic made me stick with it, now i basically just have my own version

what are your favorite things about the ship? characters deriving sth positive from women they're different to/oppositionally placed in the narrative. the ways i interpret them being alike vs. different: i think they have more core affinities than might appear (sheltered, resultant naïveté + loneliness, open-hearted, idealism wounded by circumstance), but they present and operationalise in v divergent ways, so there's space for curiosity and learning while having a foundational kinship/solace. this word is ruined but there's sth pure? about each that they'd value in the other if they themselves feel fraught. none of which need be romantic but they're hot girls so

is there an unpopular opinion you have on the ship? it would have a smaller but more compelling fanon afterlife if it wasnt ~canon rep, but greater good, i know! also bi4bi that isnt m/f is rare and fun so thats usually my treatment of them, but idc if ppl have sexuality headcanons that contradict canon, it's not going anywhere

zuko is trans. i can feel it in my bones okay hes trans and gay and besties with katara who is also trans and gay. zutara friendship sustains me. i love reading trans zuko fics to try and see how ppl incorporate that into the story. lotta fun.

what made you ship it?

as someone who dabbled in the korra fandom during its original air on tumblr (but clearly wasn’t watching and had no idea what was going on plot wise), i knew about the makorra vs korrasami shipping wars. i was there on tumblr when korrasami became canon. i don’t think i can express to people enough just how important that was, because it was during a time in which the “bury your gays” trope was so prominent. i didn’t even think it was real at first until of course, bryan made his announcement which i read through some media outlet. fun times.

i realize I didn’t quite answer the question (which I will do more so in the next question), but to dive into why korrasami is a really great and important ship and why I love it, you need to dive into its legacy first.

what are your favourite things about the ship?

1. i love how they’re kind of polar opposites, but also very similar at the same time.

2. i adore their moments in the comics.

3. I love LOVE the ending scene. i have it recited by memory at this point.

4. i love how it parallels kataang in many instances.

5. if there was ever a ship that was the definition of just the two of us, it would be them.

6. they’re canonically soulmates and twin flames!!

7. i love how korra takes no shit and quite literally is the most powerful person alive but when her girlfriend is mad at her she becomes so sad.

8. two intelligent women committed to protecting the world are in love. also, they look really good together.

is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

i know an onscreen kiss scene at the end of LOK was and still is highly anticipated, but in my opinion, they really didn’t have to kiss at the end of series for them to be believable. for one, i think it would have the korrasami deniers and antis even more convinced that it was this last minute, completely forced ship that had no romantic build up whatsoever (despite that I’ve seen people ship a boy and a girl for even less lmao). and two, sometimes you don’t really realize your feelings for one another at the end of the series. sometimes you know that your best-friend-not-quite-lover-yet is important to you, you feel a connection, and you want to explore that connection, which korra and asami do so at the end of the series. it’s the perfect ending as is. that being said, it is 2023 - so there is no excuse on bryke/avatar studios end to not show a korrasami kiss on screen in post-LOK content.

discotrek!!!: honestly after watching everything as its come out, it’s so nice to go back and see how the plot lines and character arcs carry between seasons! and also to look back on some of the early stuff with the benefit of hindsight... LMAO

atla/lok: honestly i just have this on when i’m cooking or folding laundry and it’s so nice :) they’ll always be classics!!! also looking back at the aang-zuko foil friendship that i love so much like time is a flat circle huh
