Hey, just to make this clear, first of all yes it is absolutely possible to love bomb somebody without consciously recognizing that is what you are doing. Second of all it is associated with cluster B personality disorders because it is associated with cluster B personality disorders (specifically narcissistic and borderline personality disorder). When somebody has a personality disorder which is correctly diagnosed, it means they behave in a way which meets certain criteria for behavior and self-described thought processes, for psychological reasons associated with learned/induced behaviors as opposed to innate psychiatric difference. Doing things like love bombing is literally part of the diagnostic criteria for these disorders.
These tend to be oriented around common behavioral traits and thought patterns whicy amplified to such a degree that they form a qualitatively distinct behavioral pattern than you see in the general population. And specifically, for these to be personality disorders as opposed to simply atypical behavioral patterns, they must be harmful to the individual, those around them, or both. Cluster B is specifically characterized by harm to those around the person with the personality disorder.
For example, love bombing. The desire to put one's best foot forward in the early stages of a relationship, or overcompensating for the fear of not being deemed good enough by a prospective partner, is common and natural. Not necessarily healthy, but common. Love bombing in cluster B personality disorders represents an escalation of this behavior to such a degree but it must be understood differently.
And it is particularly associated with narcissistic personality disorder (see this dissertation), and also the impulsive and discourage subtypes of borderline personality disorder. There are janky bullshit articles out there about this, but this research ain't part of that.
Love Bombing primarily occurs in the initial phases of many narcissistic relationships and is characteristic of premature, highly concentrated compliments, attention, and gifts indicating interest and love (Perrotta, 2020). This is a strategy that will draw people in quickly and provide prospective partners with a carefully curated set of romantic gestures designed to present a highly attractive image to the specific person they are wooing (Back et al., 2013) and they may seem exceptionally responsive.
According to Lawler’s affect theory of social exchange (2001), when there is an accuracy and intensity to fulfilling the emotional states in a dyad by a partner, this can serve to create stronger attachment to that partner or to the foundation of the relationship, which is also what later can buoy the strength of the trauma bond. As was seen in PNT [partner of individual with narcissistic traits] narratives, love bombing tends to decrease dramatically once the PNT has become enmeshed within the relationship, and more negative INT [individual with narcissistic traits] behaviors emerge (Perrotta, 2020).
It's extremely rare for someone to be love bombing in a deliberately Machiavellian way where they are perching their fingers and saying "hohohoho, once I have finished love bombing them they will find it that much harder to leave me when I start abusing them". What's far more common is for people to find out by trial and error that it works, to learn by example that it works from others in their life, to do so reflexively out of a fear of not having control over whether they are reciprocally loved, or because they feel it entitles them to reciprocal treatment. Or any combination of the above or more.
And approaching relationships in this way, anywhere on the spectrum from unintentionally approaching relationships in an unhealthy way, to accidentally harming others, to maliciously using it as an abuse tactic, are all common ways that love bombing presents itself as a behavior in many people with narcissistic and borderline personality disorder. Again, the diagnostic criteria of these disorders literally includes this as an indicator.
This doesn't mean there aren't problems with the field of psychology and these disorders by any means. Antisocial personality disorder in particular has gaping holes in the methodology in the history of its criteria that you could fly a plane through. Histrionic personality disorder is falling out of favor because it's just not characterized by terribly distinct behavioral patterns and there's a push to get it relegated to particular extremes of personality indices instead. And borderline personality disorder specifically has a really terrible history of being wielded as a weapon against women in relationships with abusive men, because emotional swings and outbursts are very common (and reasonable!!!) when getting out of an abusive relationship, and when combined with common patterns of lies that abusers tell about their partners that can often be misdiagnosed as borderline personality disorder.
And yes, there is also a particularly bad history with discrediting experiences of people with borderline personality disorder, especially women, you're never going to find me going to bat for psychology as a flawless institution because it fucking ain't.
But NPD and BPD literally have love bombing as one of the suggestive diagnostic signifiers, for a reason. This one ain't bullshit, this one is well established by the research. Also, these are not lifelong diagnoses, they can be managed, treated, or moved past. That's admittedly very rare for narcissistic personality disorder but it does happen with less severe examples, and it is not uncommon for borderline personality disorder.
There is a long ass gap between "don't automatically tar people with cluster B disorders as inhuman monsters" (reasonable) and denying one of the diagnostic indicators of NPD and BPD is associated with cluster B (unhinged).
Love bombing is not a euphemism for "too much affection too soon," or "high desire for contact."
"Love bombing" is a term originally used in the context of cults to describe a deliberate and coordinated recruitment method that involved feigning friendship and interest in a potential recruit, via flattery, flirtation, physical affection, and very directed positive attention to everything the recruit says in order to lure them into the cult.
Since cults and abusive relationships operate in similar ways and use similar tactics, love bombing in an interpersonal relationship looks like manufacturing closeness in order to trap someone into a relationship in which the abuser has all the control.
And I know these days there's a million bullshit junky articles out there that make you think this is a symptom of cluster b personality disorders, but there is no way for you to be love bombing somebody without realizing it.
If you are an affectionate person and the level of affection and attention you give makes someone uncomfortable, you are not "accidentally" abusing them.
If you are uncomfortable with the level of affection and attention someone is paying you, they are not de facto abusing you.
Love bombing is about using someone's desire for human connection to fast track them into a situation you control that they will feel disinclined to leave.

Tumblr media
"I dare Y/N to pick the most attractive person in the room and stand with them under the mistletoe."
Silence.
Utter silence at that.
Then a choked laugh rings out from someone𑁋probably Seokmin𑁋and you can feel fire burst out of your ears and swallow you whole. Your body sinks into the couch as the moments pass, feeling as if a million different pairs of eyes were all staring at you, waiting for you to do something.
"Are you serious right now?" You somehow muster up a chance to shoot a daggered glare right at Soonyoung, who was staring at you back so innocently.
You should have expected this, should have known better than to agree to join your friends' ridiculous game of truth or dare. But now, here you were. And as if the whole situation wasn't embarrassing enough, your eyes instinctively drift to Jeonghan across the room.
He was doing everything but being interested in the game, sitting on the couch right next to Seungcheol𑁋your older brother𑁋with his feet up on the coffee table and his arms crossed, rolling his eyes jokingly at whatever Seungcheol was saying.
Yoon Jeonghan, the boy who caught your eyes years ago when your brother brought him home for the first time. Yoon Jeonghan, the boy who used to ruffle your hair in the hallways back in high school and tease you about bombing your math exams, not realising how those little interactions meant to you. Yoon Jeonghan, the boy who never seemed to notice how much you'd grown since then, how much more you wanted him now.
Yoon Jeonghan, the boy who had always been lurking in the corners of your heart, but never fully in your reach. And you've accepted that fate a long time ago.
A lump forms in your throat. You already know this is going to be a disaster, especially with your friends staring at you like hawks, but it's not like you can choose someone else.
No, your eyes just had to gravitate straight to Jeonghan. Your brother's best friend.
Taking a deep breath, you find your feet begin to move on their own, dragging you across the room to where Seungcheol and Jeonghan were sitting.
You notice how calm Jeonghan is, how effortlessly relaxed he looks simply minding his own business, and it only seems to make everything worse, because you're about to do something that might just haunt you for the rest of your life.
When you approach closer, you hear the whispers of your friends behind your back. Jeonghan glances up from his spot on the couch, his brow raising upon your presence.
"Um..." You croak out nervously. "Hi."
It's just a game, You remind yourself. Just a game.
Jeonghan looks at you quizzically for a moment, and then his lips curl into a faint smile. But you don't detect any amusement in his features, any hint he might tease you senseless𑁋just a warm, easygoing expression that almost makes you forget why you're standing here.
"What's up?" he simply asks, and it's enough for you to beg the world to crush you.
"I, uh..." You seriously want to slap yourself in the face right now. "I pick you."
His eyes widen slightly, and your stomach ties itself into a knot.
"Me?" he questions.
"Uh, yeah." You nod quickly, dipping your head down guiltily. "We're supposed to... stand under the, um... mistletoe?"
Jeonghan doesn't answer right away, just glancing between Seungcheol's suspicious eyes towards the two of you and the mistletoe that stands proudly above the doorway to the living room.
Then he just fucking smirks.
"Well then," He takes his feet off the coffee table and stands up. "Lead the way."
Seungcheol opens his mouth to say something, but you're already walking away before he could get a word out. Each step feels heavier than the last as you trudge towards the stupid mistletoe, with Jeonghan casually following behind you.
When you reach the spot beneath the mistletoe, you stand there awkwardly, unsure of where to go from there. Jeonghan stands right in front of you, way closer than you anticipated, and you have to fight the urge to meet his eyes.
"So..." You turn back towards your friends. "Game over, right?"
"Of course not!" Seungkwan chimes in, shaking his head. "You still have to kiss, duh."
You're this close to kicking every single one of your friends in the shin.
"I𑁋That was not part of the dare!" You protest, face reddening. "You can't just𑁋"
"No takesie backsies!" Seokmin exclaims, and you give him your friendliest death glare.
You want to die. Or at least crawl into a hole and never come out. That would be nice right now.
"Y/N," he calls out to you, so quietly only you can hear. "It's okay. It's just a stupid dare, right?"
All the words that ache to tumble out of you immediately disperse when you meet his soft eyes. The way he's gazing at you has your legs feeling like jelly, your heart running marathons, your nervous façade crumbling just slightly. You almost forget about how your entire situation is put on display for everyone to watch.
"I won't bite, you know," Jeonghan muses playfully, yet when he catches the worried look on your face, his smirk fades away. "Y/N? Look at me."
You hesitate for a moment, before torturously lifting your head to look up at him. He's so pretty, especially up close, so close you can't help but flicker down to his lips for a second𑁋
"We can just get this over with, yeah?" His eyes hold yours even as he inches closer. "It'll be quick."
It's just a kiss, You tell yourself. Just a kiss.
"Okay," You murmur, feeling your feet root into the floor. "Okay."
Then when he gives you that smile again, you suddenly can't move. Jeonghan places one hand on your shoulder, another one coming up to hover closer to your cheek, though his warmth still seeps within even when he isn't fully touching you.
"Don't worry." He leans in more, his breath ghosting against your skin, and your eyelids flutter to a close. "It's just me."
Your heart pounds so loudly you're sure he can hear it. You can't see his face, but you know he's just a breath away from your mouth.
However, you also don't see the way he pauses right before your quivering lips, how his gaze roams over your face like he's studying you. You hear a chuckle.
"Cute."
Then before you can fully process, the softest touch of his lips land right at the corner of your mouth. It's gentle, light, lingering a few beats longer than necessary, and it's somehow more intimate than a kiss on the lips.
And then like a snap, it's over. Jeonghan pulls away from you slowly, the warmth from his touch spreading through your body like a wildfire. The room erupts into an obnoxious round of applause. You only stand there like a lost child, because the world and your damn brother now all know that you're hopelessly in love with Yoon Jeonghan.
And the worst part? It wasn't just a kiss in front of everyone𑁋he made it feel real.
"I..." You clear your throat, pursing your lips together. "I need a drink."
You're quick to dash towards the kitchen, away from your friends and Jeonghan.
Stepping into the kitchen, the cool air calms your flushed skin. You lean against the counter and let out a groan, burying your face in your hands, willing the heat to leave your face.
"Y/N?"
Shit.
"You okay?"
"No." You give a half-hearted laugh. "because now everyone and my brother knows I have a crush on you."
Jeonghan stands right next to you by the counter, tilting his head to get a better view of your face as he smirks amusedly. You roll your eyes, unable to grasp how much he seems to enjoy seeing you flustered.
"Seriously?" You frown. "You think this is funny? You𑁋"
"I think it's cute," Jeonghan interrupts confidently. "You're cute, and I'd rather kiss you properly than have it be from a stupid dare."
Your jaw drops to the floor, your brain short-circuiting, and you stare at him like he's just told you the most absurd thing in the world. And in a way, it is.
"Don't mess with me, Yoon Jeonghan."
"I'm not," Jeonghan responds affirmatively. "but it's fun watching you squirm."
You groan helplessly. "I hate you."
"No, you don't." He grins, the smugness oozing off him, and it's so infectious that you also smile, because he's right𑁋you don't. "Your brother can kill me for all I care, but..."
Jeonghan steps up to you until there's barely any space left between you two, reaching out to push back a strand of hair behind your ear. This time, when his lips meet yours, it's not a dare; not rushed or pressured, nor a product of your ridiculous friends’ antics. Though brief, it's deliberate, soft, like he's been waiting for this moment as long as you have.
When he pulls back, he shoots you a wink. "...I'll make this worth it for you."
And just like that, Yoon Jeonghan has you completely, hopelessly, irrevocably smitten. You can't decide if you want to slap him or kiss him again.
Before you could remotely question what the hell you just got yourself into, Seungcheol's unmistakable voice booms from the living room.
"Y/N! Jeonghan! Get your asses out here right now!"

Aaron Hotchner loved paperwork day.
Days like these meant the frenetic energy of ringing phones and rapid footsteps is replaced by the soft drone of air conditioning and the occasional rustle of files being shifted. It’s the kind of morning he appreciated—time to breath, to recalibrate without the air of an active case breathing down his neck.
But that's not why his pulse is thrumming more than steadily beneath his skin.
Hotch glances at the clock on his desk. It's early—too early for most of the team to be here yet, save for a couple agents whose faces barely register in his peripheral vision. His focus is elsewhere, fixed on a singular thought. Or, rather, on a singular person.
You.
Hotch leans back in his chair, exhaling slowly as a shameful type of heat rises to his face. It's a little pathic, he thinks, how predictable he's become—it's not the work that makes these mornings bearable anymore. It's the anticipation.
The knowledge that, any minute now, the elevator doors will part, and you'll step out, wearing something that will completely dismantle his carefully constructed composure.
Hotch had noticed a pattern (of course he did, that was his instinct honed to a razor's edge). In the field, your outfits are a study in practicality: slacks, fitted jackets, muted tones--professional to a T. Nothing flashy, nothing that would draw undue attention.
But in the office, when the cases are shelved, and the team is left to wade through stacks of paperwork... it's different.
And it drives him insane.
The image takes root before he can stop it: the curve of your thighs, tantalizingly framed by a skirt that seemed designed to test his limits. The way the fabric molds to you when you move, clinging in places that his eyes are all too quick to follow.
Hotch exhales sharply, clearing his throat as if that could somehow clear his mind. It's unprofessional--he knows this, knows better than to let his thoughts stray so far from where they belong but yet…
The ding of the elevator pulls his attention like a magnet, and there you are. His grip on the pen tightens instinctively, the knuckles blanching as his gaze locks on you.
You're wearing that skirt today--black, fitted, and infuriatingly short, hugging your hips in a way that leaves nothing to the imagination.
He tells himself to look away, and for a second, he manages it--his eyes dropping back to his desk, his breath coming out slow and measured. But that reprieve is fleeting. His gaze flicks back before he can stop it, drawn helplessly to the curve of your waist as you laugh at something one of the other agents say.
You're too good. Too sweet. Too damn oblivious to realize what you're doing to him.
And he knows it's wrong—knows he's toeing a line he has no business approaching. But the way his body reacts to you, the pull you have on him, is beyond reason. It's instinctual, raw, and completely out of his control.
He calls out your name. "Could you come in here for a moment?"
You turn, blinking at him with wide, curious eyes. "Yes, sir?"
"I need you to grab something for me," he replies, his voice level, though every syllable felt like a tightly coiled spring. He motions towards the cabinet near the corner of the room. "The Marcus file. Bottom shelf."
He was a terrible terrible man.
Without hesitation, you step toward the cabinet, crouching slightly as you begin to sift through the lower shelf. The moment your body lowers, his eyes start trailing down where the hem of your skirt lifts, just barely revealing the soft curve of where your thighs meet your ass. Then, as you bend further, shifting your weight slightly to reach deeper on the shelf, the fabric stretches taut, clinging to your ass in a way that sends a jolt straight through him.
Hotch's throat feels tight, his breathing shallow as he drinks in the sight before him. You're so close, just feet away, and the angle offers him an unobstructed view. The shape of you, the smooth expanse of skin that's always just out of reach in the field, is right there--so achingly close he feels like his chest might explode.
He knows if you dipped any further, your panties would be on display and he couldn’t help but wonder what color you had on.
You’ve always had a meticulous attention to detail, choices leaning towards deliberate but understated at the same time. In the field, you favored muted tones—greys, blacks, navies. But here in the relative safety of the office you allow a little more personality, more femininity.
His mind turns to your preferences—pink, maybe.
Hotch swallows hard, pulse roaring in his ears. The thought gnaws at him, insistent and unrelenting—he needs to know.
“Careful,” he says, feigning concern. “You might need to check further back on the shelf. Sometimes the files get pushed out of sight.”
You glance over your shoulder at him and he swears he could combust. “Further back?”
He nods, leaning back in his chair to appear casual, though his grip on the armrests were anything but. “Yes.”
You turn back to the cabinet, shifting your weight again as you crouch lower, leaning further to search the back of the shelf. The motion sends the bottom of your skirt riding higher, and for a brief, heart stopping moment, the lace of your panties is on full display.
It was a pink barely there strip of fabric.
His mind betrays him, conjuring images he knows he shouldn't entertain. He imagines his hands on you, running over the curve of his hips, gripping your thighs, sliding that damn skirt higher until there's nothing left to hide. The thought of you like this, pliant and completely unaware of the effect you're having on him, makes his pulse pound in his ears. He wonders what you would do if he were to push those panties to the side and slide a finger in you.
You shift again, leaning deeper into the cabinet as your voice drifts back to him, murmuring something about not seeing it. His jaw locks, teeth pressing together as he fights to maintain control. His fingers dig into the armrests of his chair, the leather creaking faintly beneath the strain. It's a futile effort, though; the pressure building in his chest, his body, is relentless.
The heat pools low in his abdomen, simmering and insistent, a sharp pulse of arousal tightening every muscle in his body. He's painfully hard now, the evidence uncomfortably against his slacks, but he doesn't dare move. His mind a blur of want--what he wants to do to you, what he knows he shouldn't do, and the precarious line he's treading just watching you like this.
The tension in his body seems unbearable, and for a fleeting second, he considers how easy it would be to walk over, to let his hand graze your hip, to tilt your chin up so you'd look at him and see the wreckage you've left in your wake.
But he doesn't. He can't.
Instead, he forces himself to remain still, staying rooted, the self-restraint biting and bitter.
"Are you sure it's under here? I still don't see it."
Hotch's lips twitch, the smallest shadow of a smirk threatening to break free on his face. He leans forward, feigning surprise as he picks up the file from the corner of his desk.
"Ah," he says, waving the file. "Looks like it's been right here the whole time."
You straighten abruptly, brushing your hands down your skirt and turning towards him with a soft laugh. "Hotch! So I was practically upside down in that cabinet for nothing!"
He shakes his head, giving a small chuckle to match yours. Not for nothing. The satisfaction still simmers low in his chest, a private indulgence he knows you'll never suspect--the movement was far from wasted.
"My mistake."
"Well, I guess we all have our moments. Let me know if there's anything else you need, okay?"
When the door finally closes behind you, he exhales shakily, the breath spilling out like a confession. Leaning back in his chair, he presses his fingers to his temples, his entire body tense with the effort of restraint. He feels unmoored, like a man balancing on the edge of a precipice, one misstep away from losing everything he’s worked so hard to keep under control.
But for now, he’ll settle for watching, for imagining, for wishing—knowing full well that nothing could ever come of it. And yet, as he glances at the door where you’d just been, a part of him wonders how much longer he can hold out.
It’s going to be an impossibly long day—but the most troubling part of all is how much he’s starting to enjoy the torment.

My Princess
•🪽🦇💙•
Summary: You are Feyres sister and have always been shy but when everything happens and you and your sisters become Fae, you find yourself falling in love with the mysterious shadow brother
Pairing: Azriel x Feyres sister
Content: Sneaking around, fluff, smut, getting caught
•Masterlist•
Tumblr media
I never thought much about how my life would turn out, living in a run down home with my three sisters and father gave me no hope for what could come, I thought I would die young of either illness or starvation, I always tried to help Feyre when I could just to help and get away from Nesta and Elain, they never liked me much, I am I second youngest and they liked to point out every flaw of mine
But then one day everything changed when we were kidnapped and thrown into a cauldron changing out forms, from human to far, Nesta took an immense amount of power, Elain could feel the future and me, well I haven’t shown anyone what I’ve discovered, I can morphe into the shadows, dissapear whenever I want, it came in hand when Nesta would get in one of her fits with who ever dared step up to her
But then one night as I was slipping into the shadows I met the most adorable little tendrils of shadow that seemed were alive, they were all over me swirling around with what I assumed was joy as they led me to Azriel, he was quiet like me and I found comfort in that silence but never had the never to approach him until the shadows brought me right into his room, as I’m in the shadow of his book shelf
Noticing him straighten up and peer around as his shadows spoke to him
“I know you’re here” my heart leapt, I shifted back into my fae solid form and stood before him nervously
“So you are gifted after all” he stood infront of me, shirtless showing his broad shoulders and ripped body
“Ummm yeah, please don’t tell the others”
“And why not?” I shrugged unsure of why I had to explain my reasonings only making him smirk
“You’re not like your sisters, you’re…….different”
“Different bad?”
“No different good, you’re intriguing and mysterious, you don’t put everyone out there”
From that day forward we kept our nightly meetings between eachother and it was sooooo easy, sneaking through the shadows right to his room, we started just talking and getting to know eachother but along the way I fell for him, how could I not he’s so beautiful inside and out and one night when all the others were busy getting drunk at a bar I felt my soul meld with his and his mine
That night we accepted the bond and we haven’t been able to stop, it’s been a week and our hunger for eachother hasn’t been quenched and it’s getting harder to hide this relationship
“Do you think we should tell the others?” I ask him as we catch our breathes, my head resting in his shoulder, his hand dragging up and down my back
“If that’s what you want my angel, but I can’t say sneaking around doesn’t make things more hot” he smirks as he grips my hip
“Maybe just a little longer” I giggle as I turn and straddle his legs laying forward on his chest
“Ready for more already?” His voice got deeper sending shivers down my spine
“Are you able to” I love to tease him knowing he has taken me multiple times in one night
“Please woman” he grabs my hips and grinds them up and down his hardening dick, I’ve heard about the girls talking about the comparison between wingspans but there is absolutely no way Rhys or Cassian could be bigger than my man, he nearly splits me apart
“I love you Azriel” I moan as he slowly stretches me out
“Not as much as I love you Angel, fuck you feel so good” at this angle he was just hitting every part just right it was impossible to keep quiet
“Oh god more I want more” I scream when he thrusts up into me faster and faster
“OH AZRIEL YES RIGHT THERE” I scream not even caring right now who here’s
“So good, mother above I’ll never get enough of you” right as I’m about to be in heaven the door bursts open and everyone in the group is standing there wide eyed and mouths hanging
“Ummmm what the hell is going on” Nesta shouts anger written all over her face
Azriel sits up and holds me closer covering my body
“Can we have a moment to get decent” he groans his shadows pushing the others out and slamming the door
“I’m nervous, did you see the way Nesta and Elain were looking at me?” He pulled out and helped put his shirt on me as he pulled on his own sweatpants
“Don’t worry it’ll be fine come on!” He took my hand and led me downstairs to where everyone was sat around in the living room
“Congrats brother!” Cassian congratulated Azriel patting him on the back
“How long has this been going on?” Feyre asks with a little smile as she sat next to Rhys
“Well we’ve been talking for a while at night but then last week our mating bond happened and we accepted immediately” I say holding his hand tighter
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Rhys asked
“Obviously she knows she’s not good enough to be with him I mean look at her” Nesta laughed, I hung my head low before Azriel pulled me in at the waist
“Watch your mouth, don’t think I can’t destroy your life just because you’re the high ladies sister
“She’s not wrong” Elain whispered but we all heard
“That’s enough they had their reasons and it’s their relationship, Nesta and Elain you need to leave her alone I’ve had enough of you two always bashing on her just because you know she’s better than you, I’m happy for you sister” Feyre smiles
“You can go to the family cabin if you wish while still in your mating faze” Rhys adds looking happy for his brother the next instant in standing in the cabin Azriel holding me tight from behind
“You know they’re not right, your as pretty as the stars” he says placing kisses up my neck
“Thank you Az, now how about we get back to what we started”
“Don’t have to ask me twice”

In Jake Norton's words...
Among domestic clearer political skies (yes, thank God, it's improving greatly!), it is with much interest that I read Jake Norton's first blog entry about the Everest trek with S and team. You can find it here: https://jakenorton.com/reflections-on-hunku/
Here are the excerpts I found most telling, but I do encourage you to read it all. It is genuine, it is honest and it is real. This guy does not need to sugarcoat anything, indeed - not that mountaineers were this particular type, either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
'An adventurous soul with a heart of gold', who 'rose to it all, never flustered or bothered, always interested and engaged and inquisitive.' Remember (ROFLMAO), this is not Tash, the Twitter Sparkle Lounge madame, speaking from her fangirling mirador at a random OL con. This is what a man with a 30 years experience of high-altitude trekking has to say about his unlikely, but enthusiastic travel companion. And to make the unintended (but honest) Slap-an-Idiot operation even more resounding, he then proceeds to explain why this is not even remotely an indulgent judgement of the character. He could not be clearer about it:
'And, to be honest, my little coffeeshop meeting was both to suss out his interest and let him meet me (and judge me) in person, but also, more importantly, to feel him out. Guiding for me is not simply an economic thing, transactional, but about time and people and experience. I’ve done too many “off-the-shelf” trips in the past to have zero tolerance for sharing the mountains with people whose goals and values are misaligned with mine. It took but minutes with Sam to know our worlds, while vastly different, were built upon similar ideas and ideals and approaches.'
He guided S the only possible way one must travel through Asia: with an open mind and an even more open heart. They deliberately ran away from five-stars accommodation (this blogger always combines the humble and the glam, with a noted preference for the genuine 'humble') and graciously responded to the local people's enthusiasm - something that will always be the most beautiful surprise to any traveler who successfully unlearned how to behave like a tourist:
'Unfortunately for Sam, I don’t really believe in the sugar-coated version of Nepal; fancy hotels and windowed views of life are little more than television with smell. I want people to see the real Nepal, wander the back streets, immerse in the smoky incense of dawn on cobbled streets, bells chiming and dogs barking, ambling through the visceral reality that is Pashupatinath, taking in the respite of Bodhanath, embracing the comforting chaos of alleys and backways of Lalitpur.'
Reading this made me both feel nostalgic and itchy. For even if you might find me enjoying high tea, in the Bangkok Mandarin Oriental's Author Lounge, my heart will always, always fondly remember the magical nights in a humble Hmong thatched hut at Ban Somsavath, somewhere midway from Vientiane to Luang Prabang. But that is personal and I wouldn't dare mix it up with someone else's experience, so I won't insist. What I can tell you, though, is that I absolutely believe S is honest when he says he will be back: for it is not the traveler that chooses Asia - it is Asia that carefully, deliberately chooses the traveler.
These sounds are mine. They will always resound loudly in my soul, for too many reasons to list here in tearing haste. Why did I add them, though? Because once your plane crosses the Everest, the magic begins in earnest:

There's this big gripe I have with a lot of television shows that are dramas, which is that they take the formal elements of modern prestige television--very good cast, high-quality cinematography, terrific music, often even a pretty interesting premise--and just fall completely flat-footed on the execution, because the plot has the structure of a floppy spaghetti noodle.
Plot can be just one damn thing after another, but in general this is not a satisfying way to approach plot. Satisfying plots usually have some kind of structure, build logically to some kind of climax (or even series of climaxes, in serial formats like television), often leveraging diverse dramatic techniques so that even if the plot temporarily veers off into some cul-de-sac or subplot, you feel like the overall momentum of the story is moving forward, is coming to some conclusion. In short, you feel like there is a reason for you to be watching this story in particular, that it has some weight or consequence for its characters, that each sub-element of the overall plot, each chapter or episode or what have you, is in retrospect a necessary element in the story the creator wants to tell, and the audience wants to watch.
(Obviously, for more episodic structures, which a lot of perfectly great TV shows have, the rules are different, because the plot of each episode is partially or wholly discrete; but a key element of modern prestige TV is a serial and not episodic format. I don't know why this is exactly, but I assume it has something to do with the long shadow of The Sopranos and the notion that episodic formats are for cheesy sitcoms or cheap science fiction.)
But almost every prestige drama and quite a few other shows I have tried to watch in like the past--I dunno. Ten years? Maybe not that long, but it sure feels that long--has the floppy spaghetti plot problem. The plot really is just One Damn Thing After Another, usually fuelled by characters having to hand off the Emotional Idiot Ball to one another to generate conflict. Hell, one reason Game of Thrones stood out was that it wasn't this: for all I have ragged on George R.R. Martin, I think he has some notion of structure, and though in a long-running book series you can let that structure expand and breathe, the parts of the show that followed the plot he laid out in advance benefitted strongly from having that structure to guide them. Most showrunners these days seem to think only as far ahead as the next episode, and boy, it shows!
I'm not saying all writers need to be J. Michael Straczynski, and plot their shows out five seasons in advance with multiple escape hatches for various characters in case their actor has to leave the show, but I do think I haven't seen a well-structured serial drama television show since around the time of The Wire. And this lack-of-structure problem has even infected a lot of episodic, decidedly non-prestige TV shows that have tried to incorporate overarching plots into their seasons, which I think is in part due to the idea that serial storytelling is somehow, I dunno... like More Serious Television? Anyway, I wish it would stop. I wish writers and showrunners would care more about structure!
(There's also a related problem where a show will start out with some interesting premise or concept, and abandon it like three episodes in to focus on side plots, despite the premise being the whole draw of the show.)

SSR Trey Clover - Room Relaxation Vignette
"Happy Birthday"
Tumblr media
[Interior Hallway]
Trey: Next class is… Oh, alchemy. There's stuff I need to prep for the experiment, so I guess I should head to the classroom already.
[Silver approaches]
Silver: Hello there, Trey-senpai...
Trey: Silver, hi. What's up, why are you staring at me so intently? Do I have something on my face?
Silver: Trey-senpai, is there anything you wish you had right now?
Trey: That's an unexpected question. Hmm, what do I want…?
Trey: Oh, maybe an automatic flour sifter? It'll speed things up and will keep my hands from getting too tired. It'd make baking sweets much easier on me.
Trey: Also, I'd like an apron. I have a few that I can hang from my neck, but that might cause my shoulders to get stiff, so I'd like to try out new kinds.
Trey: Plus, they tend to get pretty dirty before long, so it's never a bad thing to have too much.
Silver: I see… That was helpful.
Silver: Thank you. I think Riddle will be pleased once he hears what you've said.
Trey: Hm? Why are you bringing up Riddle?
Silver: Yesterday, before we began our club activities, Riddle was pondering over what to get you for your birthday.
Trey: Oh, so that's why you asked me what I'd want all of a sudden. …But hey, should you have told me all that…?
Silver: He seemed to be stuck in a conundrum, so I thought perhaps I could help with suggestions. Is that a problem?
Trey: Uhh, I mean, I thought maybe he might have been trying to keep the gift a secret, since he didn't come ask me directly…
Silver: …Forgive me if I've done something terrible to the both of you.
Trey: Y-You don't have to look that grave!
Trey: I'm sure this'll help him, so you should try telling him it was something you picked up through casual conversation.
Silver: I understand, I'll try telling him that. Thank you, Trey-senpai.
[Silver departs]
Trey: Yeah. See you, then.
Trey: Silver is one strait-laced guy. A bit different from the way Riddle is, that is...
Tumblr media
[Heartslabyul Dorm – Hallway]
Trey: Ah… It's already past 8PM. I have to start making my rounds to see if anyone's breaking any of the Queen of Hearts' laws.
Trey: I'll go check out the kitchen first. I'd like to think there'd be no issues, but…
Trey: It'd be bad if there was someone trying to steal a tart from the refrigerator again, even if it's only a slim chance.
Tumblr media
[Heartslabyul Dorm – Lounge]
Trey: So far, so good, for now. Next is the lounge. Hm? What's this smell…?
Trey: Hey, you two sitting on the sofa. What is that drink you have there?
Trey: Just as I thought, it's honey lemonade!
Trey: It's already 8PM. You planning on violating Queen of Hearts' Law Number 256?
[Heartslabyul Student A speaks up]
Trey: …Oh good, if you haven't actually drunk any, then that's fine. Make sure you pour it out before any issues arise.
[Heartslabyul Students A and B run away, Heartslabyul Students C and D arrive]
Trey: …Hm? Hey, you guys who just walked into the lounge, did I just hear you say "that turkey lunch was delicious"?
Trey: Do you remember the Queen of Hearts' Law Number 648? You forgot? It'd be bad if you violated that rule. Make sure you check if there were any others who might've forgotten, too!
Tumblr media
[Heartslabyul Dorm – Trey's Room]
Trey: Phew, somehow, we got through the day without there being any rule violations. Please, all I'm asking is for them to do better at not getting caught…
Trey: Now that I've taken a shower and freshened up with a good teeth brushing, guess I can just relax a bit in my room.
Tumblr media
[Heartslabyul Dorm – Trey's Room]
Trey: Oh, yeah, I should answer the Headmage's survey before I forget. Let's see, it's about…
「Survey on Quality of Life Improvements for the Student Body」
Trey: Things we want improved…? I feel like I could take it or leave it. Hmm, guess I'll try to think it over while drinking some tea.
Trey: …Oh. Ah, right, I just brushed my teeth using fluoridated toothpaste.
Trey: I can't let the fluoride film dissolve. I'll just drink water instead.
Trey: Even if I were to just brush my teeth again, the washroom always gets pretty crowded around this time, so it's not really a good time to go.
Trey: Sigh… If there were at least a sink in my room, I could do it all here, even my flossing…
Trey: I'd like to put that in the survey, but there's no way they'd accept me asking for a private washroom…
Trey: …Then, doesn't that mean it should just be that every room should have its own washroom?
Trey: Yeah. That might be a necessary change to make sure that all the students have clean dental health.
Trey: Even now, whenever I try to hand them floss, or tell them to brush more properly,
Trey: There's a ton of guys who only do it halfway, giving excuses like, "it's causing a line" in the washroom.
Trey: But it'd take too much time to renovate every single room. If I want them to renovate something while I'm still here at this school…
Trey: Oh, I know. I should write in the survey that I want them to "widen the washrooms."
Trey: That feels a little more realistic than asking for a private washroom for each room, so this request might get accepted, right?
Trey: If this actually comes to fruition, I would be able to go brush my teeth on my own preferred schedule…
Trey: And none of my other dormmates would be able to use the excuse that they'd be holding up other people in line.
[knock on door]
Trey: …Hm? Who's that? One second, I'll open the door.
[Heartslabyul Student E arrives]
Trey: One of my packages got mixed in with yours? Sorry for the trouble. Yeah, goodnight.
Trey: Wait, is this…? Ah, it is! It's the recipe book I bought online!
Trey: It had good reviews, so it grabbed my interest. Hmm, let's see… The sweets I wanted to make was…
Trey: Ah, found it. This is the one, combining cream and caramel into a puff pastry. This looks easier to make than I thought.
Trey: I need to try making it tomorrow… Ah wait, there's supposed to be a lot of sweets at the birthday party tomorrow.
Trey: Guess I'll have to wait until at least the day after tomorrow to try and make it. Oh man, just looking at this book is giving me more and more things I want to make.
Tumblr media
[Heartslabyul Dorm – Trey's Room]
[alarm rings]
Trey: …Ugh…
[Trey slaps alarm off]
Trey: …Shut up.
Tumblr media
Trey: …Is it morning already? Hrrrngh… Ugh…
Trey: Yaaawn… Glasses, glasses… Mmm… It's not here… Where is it…? Ah, found it.
Trey: Nnnnggh… I'm so groggy… Uhh… What's going on today again?
Trey: Oh, right. Today's my birthday party…
Tumblr media
Trey: .....................
Trey: …Ack! This isn't good, at this rate, I'll fall back asleep. I should go wash my face and brush my teeth…
Tumblr media
Trey: Mmm, I feel like my brain's finally working.
Trey: I only planned on skimming it, but I ended up staying up late reading through that recipe book
Trey: I'm not a morning person, so I was trying not to stay up too late… Guess I can't get carried away like that.
Trey: Alright, guess it's time to get ready for the day. I'll pull out my mirror and start with sunscreen… Oh, oops.
Trey: That was close. I still had my glasses on, I should take them off.
Trey: That reminds me, I remember when I once forgot to take off my glasses and took a shower with them on.
Trey: All the other guys in the dorm couldn't stop laughing at how my lenses fogged up, that it was a running joke for a little while after that.
Trey: Okay, I'm done applying it. This sunscreen is pretty easy to apply, so it helps me get ready faster.
Trey: "Do you find daily maintenance troublesome? All the more reason to pick and choose the exact items you use!"
Trey: …Or so Rook said, when he gave me this. It's definitely different than the one I used to use, that's for sure.
Trey: Guess I'll just buy the same thing again once I'm out. Oh, right. I need to do something for Rook to pay him back for this, too.
Trey: Okay, next are my eyebrows. I'll use a pen to gently give them shape…
Trey: …When I look at my eyes this way, it really looks like I have a mean glare.
Trey: Cater did say once that a lighter-colored eyebrow mascara could help give a gentler feel. Maybe I should try that next time…?
Trey: Nah, nevermind, it's not like I tend to glare whenever I'm wearing my glasses, so I can just leave it. If anything, it'd just be a pain to add more to my makeup regimen.
Trey: All it needs is to look good, right? Oh, and I should paint on my suit before I forget…
Trey: Back when I was a freshman, all my clovers tended to be asymmetrical, or distorted, or just plain misshapen…
Trey: Now, I'm able to draw it on pretty quick and cleanly. Guess I've just gotten better over the years. …Alright, I've finished applying everything, so now I can put my glasses back on…
Trey: As for my hair… It looks like I have a bit of bedhead. Maybe I shouldn't've been wearing a headband like this?
Trey: But hey, I should be able to fix that with a bit of brushing. I just have to be a little careful here… I guess this'll do.
Trey: Once I get changed into my school uniform, I guess I'll head to campus a little earlier today. After all, there's someone who's waiting to give me a surprise.
Tumblr media
[Main Street]
Silver: Good morning, Trey-senpai.
Silver: I was able to inform Riddle of our conversation yesterday. The present he chose is…
Trey: Hey now, you don't have to say anything else! I'll save the surprise for when I actually receive the gift.
Silver: I see. I understand. Well then, I hope you have a good birthday.
[Silver departs]
Trey: Thanks. Sorry for all the trouble.
Trey: I'm perfectly happy if I can just have a peaceful day, sure… But I guess I can still get excited about getting birthday presents.

compilation of nice/sweet things the foxes said to neil because even though they're a bunch of assholes who'll insult anyone in their vicinity they all just love him so damn much (part 1) :
WYMACK :
"if your parents are a problem for you, we'll move you to south carolina early."
"foxes are foxes for a reason and they know we wouldn't sign you if you didn't qualify. that doesn't mean they know specifics. it's not my place to ask and I'm sure as hell not going to tell them."
"it's about second chances, neil. second, third, fourth, whatever, as long as you get at least one more than what anyone else wanted to give you."
"I have never, ever hit someone without provocation and I'm sure as hell not going to start with you. you hear me?"
"I'll take care of this. you take care of you."
"do you have any idea what could have happened to you between here and there? what were you thinking? you should have called me"
"any of us would have come and gotten you"
"it's not your job to take care of yourself anymore. it's your job to play, and mine and abby's job to look after you."
ANDREW :
"oh you might actually turn out to be interesting"
"you be something. kevin says you'll be a champion. four years and you'll go pro. five years and you'll be court."
"curious that a man with so much potential, who has so much fun, who could 'be something' wouldn't want any of it"
"a liar who practices occasional honesty. clever."
"are you going to tell kevin?" "don't ask me stupid questions"
"oh neil, as unpredictable as he is unreal"
"what would it take to make you stay?"
"I'll stand between you and the moriyamas"
"you gave your game to kevin. give your back to me."
KEVIN :
"neil is exactly what the foxes need right now. his inexperience is inconsequential. we went through a hundred files looking for a striker for this year, but neil is the only one we approached. we knew as soon as we saw him we needed to sign him. we're just lucky we got there before anyone else did"
"our primary concern was keeping neil safe"
"*to riko* leave him alone."
MATT :
"are you bleeding anywhere?"
"coach says [neil's] got potential. andrew says you're fast. [...] andrew bets you can outrun everyone on this team."
"seriously are you okay?"
"I'll owe you one" "you won't owe me anything"
"you be careful, okay?"
"I'm fine" "you say that a lot. I'm starting to think you don't know what it means."
"coach says stupid but I say you have balls of steel"
NICKY :
"neil, you clean up good"
"andrew is keeping you, same as he kept kevin. it means you're part of the family now. [...] family means something different with us because it has to. it's not about blood. it's not even about who we like. it's about who andrew's willing to protect."
"that makes you invaluable to andrew"
"you're one of us, which means we'll never push you further than you're willing to go"
DAN :
"are you okay?"
"coach said you hitchhiked your way back here. I'd yell at you for being stupid but coach said he handled that already"
"we didn't let him [in]. he didn't make it further than the front door."
"neil? you don't have to do this, you know"
ALLISON :
"looking fancy"
SETH :
"maybe you're not as stupid as I thought"
AARON :
(I know it surprised me too but it's probably the only compliment he gives neil throughout the entire series and they literally just met at that point)
"at least you're not going to completely drag us down. it'll take most the season to get you where we need you to be but I can see why kevin picked you"

🍸🦎Astrology placement observations pt 2.🦎🍸
Disclaimer: these are my observations based on people I know irl and resources I have found. If you don’t agree you’re entitled to that opinion but don’t come at me xo
☿ In my experience, there are 2 kinds of libra moons. The kind that is kind of cartoon character-ish. Bubbly, fun, very sociable. Kind of exaggerated in their expressiveness. The kind that is bubbling with positive energy and could not hide their emotions if they tried. Then there is the other kind that is not talked about so much. These are much more introverted and harmonious. I would say they are equally likeable as the typical presentation of libra moons but they either don't care to have as many friends or just keep to themselves more. They have a much softer, sensual vibe kind of like taurus or cancer in a way. They are fairly in-tune with their emotions, albeit in a pretty detached, intellectual way. They tend to be quieter but still have a very pleasing aura to be around. One thing I will say that is pretty common with all Libra moons is that although they are pretty romantic, they are rarely satisfied with committing to one partner and will have many relationships or flings throughout their young adulthood as they want to experience the many facets that the dating world has to offer.
☿ An Aries/libra interception in the placidus chart can create great struggles with the self and relating to others. They struggle to express and assert themselves, and with having clearly defined boundaries between themselves and others. Usually, in childhood they struggle most in relationships with other people and may be unintuitive with social cues even if they desperately want to be accepted and have friends. This is not as apparent into adulthood as they have likely learnt, through trial and error, how to make friends and be liked. Although this is not usually through conventional means of intuition and more through an intellectual stance. Whereas in childhood they may have had a stronger sense of self, in adulthood this starts to suffer more. I think a desperate questioning of the self in an attempt to find what distinguishes them from other people and makes them uniquely "themselves" is common. These individuals can be susceptible to people pleasing tendencies as they can sometimes feel like whenever they try to assert themselves it is taken the wrong way and so they have to appease everyone and say exactly what others want to hear in order to be accepted. It is a delicate balance between selfishness and selflessness that they have to achieve.
☿ Pisces moons are a lot more grounded than people give them credit for. They usually have pretty solid ambitions and they don’t waste time striving for them. They are full of optimistic energy so they don’t have a problem with believing they are capable of achieving whatever it is they want. They approach life with a very “go with the flow” attitude. And it is precisely this attitude that allows them to easily succeed as they are pretty much okay with anything that comes along in the material world. They are also usually pretty good at a lot of different things.
☿ Venus retrograde in the natal chart can struggle with self-care and believing they are worth being cared for. They may either be less interested in romantic relationships or they can have tumultuous love lives, unless venus is well aspected. This is because they might believe they should just put up with unkind behaviour simply because they love someone. They tend to either have many different romantic relationships or stay in the same one for years and years even at a very young age. They can be pretty messy even dirty sometimes and have a boring or unconventional aesthetic style. They may be less adventurous in artistic pursuits than most people. They can be prone to copying others aesthetically as they are unsure how to express this part of themselves externally.
☿ Virgo mercuries are usually very direct and even a bit bossy in communication but even so, it is usually well received by other people as they do it in a way that is inoffensive and kind of playful. This kind of approach may not be pulled off so well by other mercury signs.
☿ Sagittarius moons and mercuries are great conversationalists. They are very funny and can strike up a conversation with anyone about anything. Sag moons especially appreciate a good sense of humor and can bring out the funny side of people. They can seem a bit tiresome at times as their propensity to debate from even sides they don’t even necessarily agree with can be grating. They don’t do this to be annoying though, they’re simply interested in finding out about how people think and stretching an argument to its limits in order to confirm or deny its validity.
Merry Christmas! X

Grumpy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Little!reader is sick and grumpy, but her mommies are here to take care of her.
Warnings: Age regression, none.
Tumblr media
Agatha sighed and rolled her eyes when you rejected yet another stuffie that she had brought you. You would always get so grumpy when you were sick, and even though Agatha was fully prepared for it, she still wasn’t expecting that much attitude from you today. Just as she was ready to snap, Rio joined the room with a small stuffed bunny in her hands. Your face immediately brightened up with a smile, and you grabbed the plushie right out of her hands, giving her a small kiss on the cheek.

„Thank you, Mommy.”

You said, hugging the plushie with both of your hands. Agatha almost gasped out loud, finding that completely unfair. She was about to swear that she had given you toys that were much better than that plushie and still got thrown onto the floor.

„How have you done that? She was grumpy just a minute ago!”

Agatha said, getting even more annoyed when Rio sent her a teasing smirk, before turning around and sitting down on your bed with a small bottle of warm milk in her hand. You took the bottle in your hands and started to drink the milk while still holding bunny in your embrace.

„Well, I got used to dealing with one brat. Having two of them doesn’t make any difference.”

Agatha was about to curse her out, but stopped right at the time, reminding herself that you were also in the room with them. She sighed and approached the bed, leaning closer to you so she would be able to check your temperature by placing her palm on your forehead. You were still hot, but much less hot than you were the last time that she had checked. Agatha sat down right beside Rio, hugging her from behind. Both women watched you finishing your milk and placing an empty bottle on the nightstand before you started pouting once again.
Before Agatha could say something, Rio squeezed her hand, asking to be the one who would handle it.

„What’s wrong, baby?”

She asked, hoping that your next wish won’t be too hard to fulfill. You reached out your hands, gesturing them for a hug.

„I wan’ hugs!”

Both Agatha and Rio almost sighed with relief after they heard your ask. They quickly crawled into the bed, getting under the sheets and hugging you from both sides. Agatha made sure that you were warm and cozy by wrapping another one of your blankets around you. Rio helped her with that, pulling you closer right after she made sure that you were all tucked in.

„Hey, don’t you dare steal her from me!”

Agatha protested jokingly, pulling you right back to her side. You giggled while both women were tossing you around. You weren’t stopping them, enjoying that little game. It actually made you forget all about your sickness and your previous grumpy mood. Actually, it wasn’t that surprising. Your mommies had always been able to make you laugh and smile, even in the worst possible situations.

„Mommies, stop!”

You said through giggles, before wrapping your little hands around them and hugging them both tightly. They immediately hugged you back, helping you get into the comfortable position between them. When you calmed down, your grip on them loosened, as you felt sleepy.

„I love you, Mommies.”

You say, making Agatha gasp in the fake surprise. She then gave you a kiss on the forehead while Rio was still holding you in her arms and caressing your back in the calming manner, helping you fall asleep.

„And here I thought you were having favorites.”

Now it was Rio’s turn to roll her eyes. Agatha smiled back at both of you before lying down right next to your tired little body. Soon enough you and Rio were asleep, while Agatha was right beside you, making sure that you were having peaceful dreams.

Christmas at Shiz
The bustling halls of Shiz University were quieter than usual as Christmas break approached. The students, eager to return home to their families for the holiday, packed their bags and filled the port, leaving behind the campus, which would soon be shrouded in a blanket of snow. Yet, Elphaba Thropp remained in her dorm room, the only sign of life in the otherwise empty corridor.
She sat at her desk, her green hand resting over the pages of a thick book, but her mind wasn’t on the text. Instead, her thoughts drifted to her family—her father, who hadn’t even sent a letter this year, her mother, who had long passed, and Nessarose who’d fought tooth and nail to get her to join the family to no avail. The holidays had always been a bitter reminder of how alone she was. Her father’s disdain for her… her difference. She wasn’t welcome in their home, not for Christmas, not for anything.
As she stared out the window, watching the first snowflakes of the season descend softly upon the grounds, she knew there was no reason to go home. No one would miss her except Nessa— who’d soon forget at the sight of the many gifts she’d surely receive. The thought of spending the holidays alone didn’t faze her as much as it probably should. She had always been used to it, after all.
It was then that there was a knock on her door.
“Elphie? Are you in there?” came a familiar, cheery voice that always, without fail, sent a chill down her spine.
It was Glinda, her best friend, her roommate, and possibly the only person who ever seemed to truly care about her outside of her studies, unless you count Dr. Dillamond, but even he’d have more interesting counterparts to interact with. Elphaba sighed and remained at her desk.
“I thought you were going home for the holidays,” Elphaba mumbled, flipping the page of her book with a frown. Of course it was nice to see her friend, but it was the holiday season, one in which she knew Glinda Upland had be eagerly awaiting as she’d sang every Christmas song she knew. Every. Day.
“I was… but I received notice that Momsie and Popsicle were caught by a rip in the sails if you can believe it! It is most heartbreaking that they won’t be able to see my face for the first day of the Upland Christmas festivities. Alas, they will be here tomorrow.” Glinda replied with slight frown, her brown eyes now riddled with concern. “But Elphie, what on Oz sake are you doing here?”
Elphaba tensed at the question, her teeth gnawing at the insides of her cheeks as she debated whether it was worth it or not to send her feather hearted friend into a frenzy, however, she knew that the girl would only pry more and more until she got to the truth. And damn it did she always get to the truth.
“I don’t have anywhere else to go,” Elphaba said quietly. “Besides, my family.. They don’t want me there.”
Glinda’s expression softened. Hesitant, she stepped closer to Elphaba, her blonde curls swaying as she moved. “That’s not fair,” she said, her voice filled with warmth and genuine sympathy. “You should be with someone— people who cares about you, Elphie. And I do. So I’ve decided.. I’m going to stay here with you! We’re going to have the best Christmas ever!” Glinda’s sugary voice sang as she clapped in approval of her own decision.
Elphaba blinked, unsure of how to respond. “But… why would you want to spend Christmas here, with me? Shouldn’t you be with your family?”
Glinda shrugged nonchalantly. “I suppose my parents will be fine without me for one holiday. I’ve already sent them my gifts, personalized photos of me in these great Shiz halls. And besides, it’s important to me that you’re not alone—“ The blonde daughter herself, “because how else would you feel the Christmas magic?!” She flashed a smile, unsure if her quick thinking covered her pathetic pining. “So, what do you say? Will you let me stay?”
A smile tugged at Elphaba’s lips. She wasn’t used to such kindness, not from anyone, let alone someone like Glinda. “I… I guess so,” she said, her voice quiet but filled with gratitude.
“Great! Now, let’s get you into the Christmas spirit!” Glinda said, clapping her hands together excitedly. “We’ll decorate the whole place, bake some cookies, maybe even build a snowman. You’re going to experience your first real Christmas, Elphie!”
Elphaba groaned, already wondering if she’d made the right decision of letting her best friend stay just at the sound of all of the extravagant activities.
—————
The next few days passed in a whirlwind of activity. Glinda was, as always, a force of nature when it came to organizing and decorating. She had managed to find an old Christmas tree in the campus storage room, which, despite being a bit scraggly, had a certain charm to it. The tree’s branches were sparse in places, but Glinda didn’t seem to mind in the least. It was still a tree, and that was all that mattered.
Elphaba watched from her spot on the floor, arms crossed, as Glinda eagerly strung lights around the tree, her movements quick and precise, almost as though she’d been born for this. Elphaba couldn’t help but be captivated by the way Glinda worked. There was something about the way she moved—so graceful, so full of energy—that made everything seem brighter, even on a dreary winter afternoon. The cheerful clink of ornaments being hung on the tree and the occasional giggle from Glinda only added to the warmth that filled the room.
Elphaba, who had never done anything like this before, felt a mixture of awe and discomfort. She couldn’t remember the last time anyone had made an effort to do something for her. The idea of having a tree in her room, something so festive and joyful, felt almost alien to her.
“Okay, Elphie! Now it’s your turn.” Glinda sang, handing Elphaba a green ornament to place amongst the rest of the sparkling bulbs and tinsel.
“I’ve never done this before,” Elphaba admitted as she cautiously placed the single ornament on the tree. “This whole thing… I don’t know what I’m supposed to feel.”
Glinda paused her decorating and turned to her with a soft smile. “It’s okay. You don’t have to know what to feel. You’re here with me, and I’m going to show you how wonderful Christmas can be. No expectations, no pressure. Just… us.”
Elphaba couldn’t help but feel a warmth in her chest at the sincerity in Glinda’s voice. It was such a simple promise, but it meant more to her than she could articulate.
“I’ve never had a real Christmas,” Elphaba murmured, her fingers tracing the edge of a green ornament. “Not like this. I don’t even remember the last time I had someone to spend the holidays with that didn’t do it out of proximity.”
“Well, now you have me,” Glinda said, grinning. “And I’m not going anywhere. So… let’s make the most of it.”
Elphaba’s heart gave an unexpected flutter at the words, though she quickly brushed it off. Glinda didn’t mean anything by it. She was just being her usual bubbly self. Still, the sentiment lingered in the air like a spark.
When Glinda finally stepped back, her hands on her hips, she surveyed the tree with a proud smile. “Perfect! Now for the star!” she exclaimed, holding up a shimmering gold star, its edges delicately curved. The short woman stood on the tips of her toes to try and place the star but failed to reach the top. “Tsk, tsk, tsk. Mr. tree could you be kind and bend to me so I mustn’t struggle so much?”
“Do you want me to help?” Elphaba asked, her voice betraying a hint of hesitation.
Glinda’s eyes lit up. “Of course! I suppose that is best since my wand is still broken, which I need to talk to Morrible about that.”
Elphaba let out a soft chuckle, avoiding Glinda’s gaze as she stepped toward the tree and place a soft touch to either side of Glinda’s slender waist, helping her stretch to place the star on the very top branch. For a second, Elphaba’s hands lingered a little longer than they should’ve on Glinda, and a jolt of warmth surged through their bodies. The proximity was both comforting and overwhelming.
When the star was finally settled atop the tree, they both stood back, their gazes lingering on the shimmering gold decoration.
“It’s perfect,” Glinda said, her voice soft and full of admiration. She turned to Elphaba, and for a moment, they just looked at each other, both of them blushing slightly, the unexpected intimacy of the moment still hanging between them like a delicate thread.
Elphaba cleared her throat, breaking the silence. “It’s… it’s nice,” she said quietly, trying to ignore the rush of emotions stirring in her chest. “Thank you. For letting me help.”
“Thank you for not fighting me on this,” Glinda said with a bright, almost mischievous smile as she stepped back. “Now it’s time for the next part of our Christmas festivities—cookies and hot chocolate!”
Elphaba nodded, relieved for the distraction. She still wasn’t sure what had just passed between them, but for now, she could at least try to focus on something else. As she followed Glinda to the kitchen, she couldn’t help but glance over her shoulder at the tree—at the star, shining so brightly at the top, as though it were a symbol of something new beginning.
And for the first time in a long while, Elphaba didn’t feel quite so alone.
For the rest of the day, they laughed, sang Christmas carols (even if Elphaba’s voice was a bit off-key), and indulged in Glinda’s latest holiday obsession—baking. Glinda was a disaster in the kitchen, spilling flour everywhere, but it didn’t seem to bother her in the least. Elphaba couldn’t help but be amused by Glinda’s infectious energy, even if she kept accidentally burning the cookies.
As the evening drew near, they sat down on the floor, sipping hot chocolate that Glinda had somehow managed to make without burning the milk. The tree glittered in the corner, the lights twinkling softly in the dim room.
“I’ve never had hot chocolate before,” Elphaba confessed before cautiously taking a sip of the hot liquid, her eyes widening at the taste. “This is… good.”
“See? I knew you’d like it!” Glinda exclaimed. “It’s a Christmas classic! Next up, we’ll do some caroling—just you wait.”
Elphaba chuckled softly. “I’m not much of a singer.”
“You don’t have to be,” Glinda replied with a grin. “It’s all about having fun. Just wait until we get to the mistletoe part.”
“Mistletoe?” Elphaba raised an eyebrow.
Glinda’s grin wiped from her face as she realized she’d said that out loud. “Oh, Oz. I-it’s nothing. You’ll see!” She squeaked, taking another sip of her sweet, chocolately excuse to not talk.
—————
The next morning, Glinda had many thoughts that paced through her mind as she watched her emerald companion get ready for the day they had in store. Swallowing hard, she finally mustered up enough courage to stand. She tip toed over to the other side of the suite and handed Elphaba a small, neatly wrapped box. “Here,” she said, her tone suddenly quieter than usual. “This is for you. It’s not much, but… I wanted to give you something.”
Elphaba stared at the gift for a moment, unsure how to react. She gently unwrapped the paper and opened the box to reveal a delicate silver bracelet, etched with a small ‘G + E’.
“I… I don’t know what to say,” Elphaba whispered, her voice tight with emotion.
“You don’t have to say anything,” Glinda replied softly, boldly taking Elphaba’s hand in hers. “It’s just something I wanted you to have.. As a reminder when you’re outside of these here Shiz walls that I, Glinda Upland of the Upper Uplands, am your best.. friend.” The word friend had taken a bit more effort to say than she’d liked, but her friend was still too shocked to notice.
Elphaba’s heart thudded painfully in her chest. She hadn’t realized how much she had longed for such an acknowledgment, such a gesture, until this moment. Her fingers brushed over the smooth surface of the bracelet, and for a moment, everything else in the world seemed to fade away.
“Thank you,” she finally said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Glinda smiled, her gaze warm but hesitant. “You’re welcome. Um.. Elphie, actually I.. well I was thinking about how you haven’t had the full Christmas experience, and as your.. friend.. it’s my job to make sure you have absolutely every magical Christmas experience, is it not?” The golden haired girl rambled, her light feet pacing across their room.
Elphaba raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
Glinda bit down on her perfectly glossed lips, glancing toward the doorway, where a sprig of mistletoe was hanging just above the entrance. “I.. I mean. I know we’re just friends and you can totally say no if you want to, but I mean it’s a tradition and.. well you should experience all the traditions. Right? I hope I’m not confusifying you.”
Elphaba had never thought much of the traditions surrounding Christmas. She’d always seen them as frivolous, unnecessary. But in this moment, as she glanced at the mistletoe with Glinda underneath, she couldn’t deny the magic of it all.
Elphaba’s eyes were soft as she stepped closer, her breath warm against Glinda’s skin. “I mean.. it is tradition.” Elphaba cooed.
“You don’t have to, if you don’t want to,” Glinda said quietly, her voice trembling slightly. “But… if you do, I’d like it. A lot. For you to get the experience, that is..”
Elphaba’s heart was racing. She had always been so guarded, so protective of herself. She had never allowed anyone to get too close. But Glinda… Glinda had a way of way of chipping away at her walls, even when she’d first arrived at Shiz it was Glinda who got under her green skin and made a home. Now her mind was filled with much more than just the cruel darkness of the past, but the warmth of the woman just inches away from her.
“Elphaba?” Glinda’s voice was a whisper now, almost too soft to hear.
Elphaba swallowed hard, her gaze meeting Glinda’s. There was something new in her eyes, an uncertainty that she’d never seen before. One that she’d recognized so many times in her own gaze.
Stepping closer, Elphaba closed the small gap that somehow was still too wide between them, allowing Glinda to feel her heart beating against her chest as she gently cupped her soft, blushing cheek in her hand and kissed her like the delicate flower she was.
The kiss was gentle, tentative at first, as if they were both testing the waters. But as their lips met again, and again, and again, the world seemed to fall away. For the first time in years, Elphaba felt… home. The warmth of Glinda’s presence, the tenderness of her touch, completed something inside of her that she didn’t know was unfinished. “So this is the Christmas magic you were talking about? I quite like it, Glinda Upland. Now.. remind me, with Mistletoe am I allowed to kiss more than just your lips?”
Glinda’s eyes widened and she quickly ran to her bed to pull out a handful of mistletoe from her bedside table. “Shall we find out?” Her swollen lips curled into a smirk.
The two enjoyed the rest of their Holiday at Shiz just like that, filled with warmth and wrapped in each other, eagerly awaiting their next school break.
——
I hope you all enjoy!! :)

Hey, so what’s your opinion on “system-agnostic” modules?
I think they work best as a starting point for GMs, because ultimately the game system you end up running a module in will invariably end up affecting how the module itself runs. As such, with system-agnostic modules more than anything designers really shouldn't try to present a neat progression of scenes that the characters can be expected to go through regardless of system, but instead a situation with multiple ways to approach it.
Like, the reason it's kind of popular to present an "adventure" in modern D&D and similar games as a sequence of challenges that the characters can be expected to get through, the main variable being "how many resources do the characters expend," is because D&D is ultimately a game where challenge is the main gameplay and things are skewed in favor of the player characters. If you however tried to run a Mythras group through a D&D 5e adventure, even if you somehow managed to convert the stats so they're fair approximations of the original stats in Mythras, it would still result in heavily different gameplay because Mythras is very different from D&D (despite them both being very trad!).
So yeah, system-agnostic modules if anything require the designer to be more aware of all the various gleeblors they are operating under. Are you assuming a baseline of competence that is only true in a very specific type of game? Are you assuming that characters will have access to verbs which are in fact not universal? Are you assuming that the characters will be working together? All of this and more is important stuff to think about and make explicit in the text!
So yeah, none of this is to say that you shouldn't write a system agnostic module, but if you do you REALLY have to remember that you are not writing a story: the story is what HAPPENS in the game, and you as a module writer cannot write a progression of events that will be unaffected by the game system, because the game system is an active participant in creating the story. What you can and should write is a setup, a starting situation, with lots of room for the story to emerge from the empty space.

"We see a glimmer of emotional despair and blame lobbed at Cas which is… fascinating" out of curiosity and for clarification, what was the emotional despair lobbed at castiel? im reading the transcript and am not quite sure
Tumblr media
Confession: This is conjecture on my part.
I feel like this scene in Ouroboros is ofc course directed at all of Dean's loved ones, as they were all working to convince Dean to stay alive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But imho, here: Dean's squared up to Cas.
Tumblr media
And Cas squares up to him,
while Sam's body instinctually takes on the body language of a peacemaker between them.
Tumblr media
(Also// We as audience have the diner scene between Dean and Cas fresh on our minds: DEAN: "Okay. But if -- if you don't we still have Plan B. ... Coffin. Ocean. Done.")
Sam's not exactly "getting it," but I think his subconscious must understand something of it, maybe...
///
I think the emotional despair that seems be more directed at Cas isn’t blame in the traditional sense but rather a reflection of Dean’s internal conflict.
I think Cas represents something Dean deeply struggles with—his own desires.
Cas, along with Jack, symbolizes hope and the possibility of a particular kind of future happiness, which Dean has been convinced that he’s not "allowed" to want. He has to be covert about it, to take a meager, starved kind of approach to his own happiness. (Note: Dean is allowed to enter family units and support others, but he's rarely allowed to "need" something/someone for himself in earnest.)
There's 14x10's almost-happiness: "DEAN: This bar -- This bar -- This bar -- I've never had anything this nice. Rocky's still isn't for sale."
And 2x20's DJINN CARMEN as she walks up to him, taking his face in her hands, kissing him* CARMEN: We can have a future together. Have our own family. I love you, Dean. Please."
And of course 8x17's DEAN: "I know you're in there. *CASTIEL raises his angel blade, ready to strike.* I know you can hear me. Cas... *DEAN's voice breaks, pleading.* It's me. *CASTIEL stands there, blade at the ready, light glints off the blade.* We're family. We need you. I need you."
And what's even more sickening? AU Michael's words later work to inflame this: "If only Dean had used that coffin when he had the chance."
(Aside/// And likewise, The Empty's deal works to convince Cas of the same thing, that he's not "allowed" to feel personal happiness or express love without dire consequences!)
/// Anyway, I think Dean’s decision not to say goodbye to Cas and Jack in 14x12 does stand in stark contrast to his other behaviors: hugging Sam, eating last meals with Mary and Donna, etc. I think this difference highlights how unique and emotionally complicated his relationships with Cas and Jack are. Dean’s reasoning—“I don’t need to get shaky on this thing”—reveals his fear of losing resolve if he faces them directly. (It's even unlike Lisa, whose goodbye was bittersweet but clean.)
In a nutshell, saying goodbye to Cas and Jack would force Dean to confront the depth of his attachments, making it harder to follow through with his sacrifice. (Or, per the script, it would make Dean himself "too emotional.")
SAM: You know, Mom hates this. I hate this... And Cas and Jack, you haven’t even told them. DEAN: Okay, well, yeah, that’s because I’m not good with the whole big goodbyes, alright? I-I-I don’t need to get shaky on this thing. SAM: Wouldn't be the worst thing.
Overall, Dean fears his resolve will weaken, that his emotions will spill out uncontrollably, revealing more than he intends, or that his goodbye would overburden Cas and cause him strife—because, much like Cas with his Empty deal, Dean doesn’t want to burden him.
Both Dean and Cas share a deeply ingrained sense of self-denial, prioritizing protecting others over addressing their own emotional needs.
I feel like The Gorgon’s line in Ouroboros, “Oh… you definitely want things,” brings this to the surface, as does AU Michael’s taunts. All season long, Michael asked his victims: "What do you want?"
Notably, Dream!Pamela says to Dean: "Why do you always want what you can't have?" And finally, AU Micheal's: “If only Dean had used that coffin when he had the chance.”
:(
////
Cas makes Dean want to stay, a feeling that unsettles him precisely because of how powerful it is. Perhaps, it stirs up frustration because it's something he can't seem to control, even after all this time.
This is a frustration that Dean largely directs at himself, but I think it occasionally spills over into his interactions with Cas because of the vulnerability Cas represents. (Note: All this isn't even factoring in Cas's well-meaning attempts to shield Dean, which winds up making Dean feel shut out.)
///
And of course... all hail 2x20.
John instilled hero virtues in Dean by teaching him that sacrifice and duty were part of being a hero/family caretaker, even at the cost of his own happiness. This mindset is clear in Dean’s painful reflection, where he questions why he has to carry the burden of saving others while his own life and the lives of his loved ones are sacrificed:
DEAN (to John): "Course I know what you'd say. Your happiness for all those people's lives, no contest. Right?" But why? Why is it my job to save these people? Why do I have to be some kind of hero? (begins to cry while talking) What about us, huh? What, Mom's not supposed to live her life, Sammy's not supposed to get married?  Why do we have to sacrifice everything, Dad? (pause) It's... (Dean's lips tremble. Silence. We hear the sky rumbling. Tears begins to falls on DEAN's cheek.)

2024 Was a Great Year for Elriels
The end of the year is approaching, and unfortunately, there's no announcement yet, but Elriels definitely have plenty to be grateful for this year.
On the contrary... (Quick rant...I'm allowed one a year)
The other side has enjoyed complaining and discrediting articles and large companies commenting on Elriel...
Why?
I suppose it's because their side of the fandom has nothing new to talk about with their ships?
All they have are:
Commissioned art pieces paid for by themselves (great for the artists and Elriels do commissioned pieces to so... touche)
Screen Rant articles. This website is a way for free lance writers to make some money. Honestly, if you want to dive into them, go ahead, but these article centralize on the writers' opinions and click bait/SEO. And no, I'm not going to hunt down these writers' information to discredit. People are allowed to have their opinions and make money however way they want. Just at least take a moment to look at the titles for Screen Rant articles vs. TIME, TODAY, and E! News. You'll see a difference going forward in this post.
Tumblr media
Additonal unnecsssary "official" weeks/ "spontaneous" days for ships and characters due to the belief that Elriel fans ruin everything
Tumblr media
Anyways, let's dive into this year's pro Elriel content ❤️
January 30th, 2024
TIME- Time magazine is a widely cited resource and maintains high standards of journalism. In this particular article, only Elain and Azriel are mentioned as a possibility for the next ACOTAR book.
Tumblr media
January 30th, 2024
TODAY Show- A sit-down interview with SJM. (This particular part of the interview I condensed together on Canva because of the limited pictures we can include on Tumblr) Below, Sarah talks about fate, the idea of exploring rejecting mates, and free will. (Lucien and Elain?) She also discusses her characters ending up with someone who offers growth and joy. (Azriel and Elain?) SJM can't tell us in black and white that she's doing this, but COME ON people. There's a reason she discusses it.
Oh, and the TODAY show decided to like/comment on Elriel comments ONLY.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Side Note: If interested, take a look at this tumblr post for a lovely, thorough breakdown. ( @courtofblooming )
April 19th, 2024
Guilty As Sin Instagram Story from SJM- Sarah loves her little crumbs, and this song honestly encapulates Elriel. We unfortunately don't get confirmation from SJM, but I'll include some of the lyrics for you to judge.
This cage was once just fine
Am I allowed to cry?
I dream of cracking locks
Throwing my life to the wolves
Or the ocean rocks
Crashing into him tonight
He's a paradox
I'm seeing visions, am I bad?
Or mad? Or wise?
What if he's written 'mine' on my upper thigh
Only in my mind?
One slip and falling back into the hedge maze
Oh what a way to die
I keep recalling things we never did
Messy top lip kiss
How I long for our trysts
Without ever touching his skin
How can I be guilty as sin?
What makes it even better? Audible and Spotify commented ONLY on Elriel posts in relation to this song. You won't find these particular companies commenting on any other ships of the fandom.
Side Note: The other side of the fandom tries to discredit these influential companies by stating the person behind the account doesn't represent the whole company or just enjoy saying the companies comments aren't credible. Multi-million dollar companies are NOT going to waste their time and reputation on fanon created ships. These companies are business smart and only invest in what's profitable. There's a reason they make millions...ELRIEL is profitable due to canon evidence. Simple as that.
Tumblr media
December 2nd, 2024
Bloomsbury and SJMaas Updates announce that the audiobooks are now available on Spotify- Bloomsbury, SJM Updates, and Spotify are in close collaboration with each other. Makes those Spotify Elriel comments even more satisfying. ❤️
Tumblr media
December 9th, 2024
SJM 2024 Author of the Year Spotify Video- Although we got little news for the coming spring about audible books, us as a fandom had a lovely time dissecting the video. Yet again, Spotify only commented on Elriel comments.
Tumblr media
Side Note: Take a look at these tumblr posts for an inciteful look into the significance of tea cups/Elain ( @offtorivendell ) and an excellent interpretation of the Spotify video. ( @wingedblooms )
December 13th, 2024
E News!- I know this particular article has ruffled some feathers, but it's entertaining none the less! Gotta love the nod to Azriel's wingspan. IYKYK (And yes, it's credible... it's owned by NBC Universal... the same company that owns TODAY and 33% stakes of Hulu through Comcast (Comcast owns NBC Universal, and the stakes are through NBC Universal). I only add Hulu due to the ACOTAR TV series being developed through Hulu.)
Tumblr media
December 17th, 2024
Goodreads- This is just a little star on top of the tree, but it's great to know that ACOFAS made it into the top 10 most read overall books this year. (Interesting how ACOSF didn't make it...) Notably, ACOFAS is the bridge for future spin-offs. (Also interesting how a particular character isn't seen in ACOFAS...)
Tumblr media
(ACOFAS pictures taken from @psychologynerd post linked below)
In Conclusion...
As an Elriel, I've truly appreciated the continuous confirmations for Azriel and Elain for the future ACOTAR 5 book in small, simple ways. Even better knowing that Spotify and Audible have outwardly commented on ONLY Elriel posts.
As the year 2024 ends, I'll treasure these little nuggets of positivity until the announcement day! I have a feeling 2025 will hold some excellent news for the fandom. Until then, have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!
P.S.
If you know of anymore pro Elriel content from this year, by all means, write a comment. 🥰

THE OLD SOUL OF AMERICA MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
You know the trail to Dead Horse Point well by now. Something is a bit different – but still, Joshua and Daniel and the Dead Horses and Sorrows welcome you and your mules, Rook and Bishop, all the same.
Follows-Chalk, Drumming-Storm, and a few other Dead Horses crowd the mules, offloading everything you had on them: books, kettles, blankets, guns (and accompanying black powder), tobacco, and alcohol. They mostly crowd Rook, as she’s the heavyweight of the two and carries more – Bishop’s more of a riding mule. The Dead Horses wander off soon after, arms full, taking everything to its respective place.
Joshua approaches you, adjusting the bandages near his eyes to see you better. “You’ve got on well.”
“Yes, sir,” you say. “Happy Trails treats me well. I’m their employee, but I’m also their friend.”
“Yes, but this?” Joshua gestures at the people putting up what you’ve brought. “All this product? They must have put a lot of trust in you.”
“They put more trust in my steeds,” you say. “Both got some burro in them. And they can kick as hard as them, too – especially Bishop.”
“That, I don’t doubt,” Joshua says.
You watch as Rook shakes her coat out, causing her carrying gear to jingle. Bishop wanders closer to Joshua, nudging at his shoulder and nipping at the bandages that cover Joshua’s arm. Joshua lifts his arm (slowly – again, he’s bandaged all over) and pats the side of Bishop’s face.
“They like it here,” you say. “Maybe it’s something about the canyon. Or maybe they just like you.”
“Zion is a godly place,” Joshua says. His voice, though deep and abrasive, carries a heavy tone of affection. “Wherever man may be, he always dreams of Zion. These creatures may share our same dreams.”
“That’d be nice,” you hum softly. You reach out and place your hand under Rook’s jaw, and she leans forward into your touch. Her big, brown eyes blink slowly as she looks at you, then around the campsite, like she’s appreciating the sight.
“We should probably get going,” you say. You look over at Joshua. “I need to load up on daturana and datura hide. That’s what Happy Trails wants in exchange, anyway.”
“Go talk to Winding-Path,” Joshua says. “She knows what you’re owed.”
When you look to your right, Follows-Chalk is hurrying over, a hand raised and a smile on his face. The painted markings on his face crease and stretch with his smile – rather than spider legs creeping up his cheeks, they look like laugh lines.
“Hoye!” He greets. “It’s nice to see you again.”
“Nice to see you, too,” you say. You reach out to grasp his hand, and as soon as you brush it –
A bump in the road jolts you awake. You let out a small, confused sound, then settle.
You’re in the back of a wagon, crammed between folded-up lodgings and kitchen supplies. Your knees are drawn to your chest, and your back is to the wooden side of the wagon.
Before packing up and making yourself fit into the space left on the wagon, you weren’t really told much of anything. From what you’ve gathered, the men (“men” being the young-ish, able-bodied ones) robbed a train, and now you and the gang have to flee. It seems like you fit right in, because they have a penchant for pissing off the wrong people, just like you.
“Hey, you’re finally awake!” Hosea calls from the front, where he sits next to Arthur.
“Yeah.” You shift and take a quick, deep breath as you rub the sleep from your eyes. “Yeah, I’m up.”
“We’re nearly to the Heartlands,” Hosea says. He turns so that he’s facing you with his arm resting on the back of the seat. “You ever been there before?”
“No,” you say. You sway with the trail in the dirt road and the way Arthur drives.
“We’re settling up in Horseshoe Overlook,” Hosea says. “It’s near a livestock town called Valentine – all mud and morons, if I remember right.”
“Huh,” you hum. You look away from Hosea and around you.
It’s different from when you were up in Colter. It’s warmer, for one. The trees aren’t dredged in snow – instead, their branches are covered in leaves, each one green and upturned. Grasses and flowers sprout from the dirt ground, which is now soft and malleable instead of frozen and cold to the touch. Everything is just nicer.
For a minute, you just listen to the sounds around you. It’s calm. Birdsong fills the air, and you can see animals bounding through the trees of the forest and grasses of the valleys (for the first time in a while, honestly – cities don’t lend themselves well to wildlife).
What was that dream about? You wonder silently. I was… in the Dead Horses’ camp. But that place is completely fictional, even in this… timeline? Coma-fever-something dream? I don’t even know at this point.
You hear the sound of moving water and look to the front. Arthur is guiding the horses into a stream, which the rest of the caravan has cleared without a problem.
In the middle of the water, you feel a shock and hear something break. You clutch to the side of the wagon and feel that the driving is a little… off.
“Get us out the stream,” Hosea says. “You gotta keep us moving, but calm.”
Did you just ask Arthur to be calm? You shout in your head. Arthur is the epitome of everything that isn’t calm! He barely feels things, and when he does, he’s meaner than a gas station tweaker – and he’s not even on anything!
Arthur (yes, carefully, you’ll admit) pulls the wagon out of the stream. Just as he does, you feel another shock and a shift. You scramble to hold onto a canister as it nearly falls out of the back of the wagon.
“Ah, shit!” Arthur curses. He draws the wagon to a stop.
“Okay, let’s take a look,” Hosea says.
You move and shift the items so that they’re pushed further up the wagon, where you were sitting just before. You hop off the back of the wagon. Sure enough, the wheel has just popped itself right off.
“You alright back there?” Bill calls from up ahead.
“Does everything look alright?” Arthur snaps as he hops off the driver’s seat.
You can see Javier shift in his seat in the wagon ahead of yours, trying to get a better look. “Well, what’s going on?”
Arthur walks closer to you, accessing the damage. He throws a hand up in the air and groans. “I broke the goddamn wheel!”
“Alright!” Hosea chimes. “Let’s get it fixed.”
“You need help?” Javier calls.
Hosea waves him off with a hand. “I reckon we can handle it.”
You quickly step back as he and Charles make their way to the back of the wagon. Arthur hoists up the wheel so he can roll it towards the wagon. Hosea and Charles pick up the back, and Arthur forces the wheel back into place.
You hurry over and pick up a crate, putting it in the wagon. You hop up into the bed of the wagon and take a small chest from Charles, placing it where it belongs.
“Hey, look at you.” Arthur says as he checks the back of the wagon. “You ain’t so useless after all.”
“O-oh,” you say after a second. “You’re talking to me?”
“I am.” He looks up at you. The brim of his hat casts a harsh shadow that partly obscures his eyes. “Did I… offend you, somehow?”
“No, no!” You laugh nervously and take another crate from Charles. “I just wasn’t sure. Sorry.”
“Uh-huh,” Arthur hums.
“Hold on,” Hosea almost hisses.
You look over at him, and he’s looking to the side. You follow his eyes and see three figures on the ridge of a cliff, each perched on a horse. You can barely make out their facial features, but they look like Native Americans.
“What you think?” Arthur says lowly.
“If they wanted trouble, we wouldn’t have seen them,” Charles says.
“Poor bastards…” Hosea raises his arm and waves, but doesn’t call out to them. “We really screwed them over down here.”
Yeah… You think to yourself, still looking at the figures on horseback. It’s not much better in the future, either. I’d tell you all the details, but then I’d be put in an asylum.
“Come on,” Hosea says. “Let’s not push our luck.”
You take your eyes away from the figures. Instead, you help Charles pack up the last of what’s meant to go in the back of the wagon.
As Arthur and Hosea hop on the front of the wagon, you make yourself comfortable on top of a trunk. Charles sits across from you on a rectangular crate.
“Not too far now. Stay on this trail,” Hosea instructs Arthur. “We’ll follow the river, then cut left inland.”
You look around as Hosea starts telling Arthur about how the poor the natives were treated in this area. “Stolen clean away from them it was, every blade of grass,” he says. Even though it’s wrong (reprehensible, even), you understand why white men wanted this country. It’s breathtakingly beautiful – or maybe it just looks that way because it’s not what you’re used to. It’s not asphalt and smog and a concrete jungle in place of real land that lives and breathes.
“I heard some of the army out here was particularly, uh…” Hosea thinks for a second. “Unpleasant about it.”
“Unpleasant?” Charles echoes. “How do you rob and kill people pleasantly?”
“You… say please?” You try to joke. “And thank you?”
“Something like that!” Hosea laughs. “That’s the perfect way to simplify something more complicated for the benefit of our blockheaded driver here.”
You cringe a little. You don’t really want to be roped in while Hosea’s insulting Arthur so freely and carelessly.
“Hey, don’t blame nothin’ on me,” Arthur says. “Never forget, y’all – this here’s a conman, born and bred. Just ‘cause it sounds fancy don’t mean he knows a damn thing ‘bout what he’s talkin’ ‘bout.”
A nice pseudo-quiet settles over all four of you. (Pseudo because while it’s true that none of you are talking, the noise of the forest around you fills that silence well.)
“So…” Arthur starts. “Charles. What happened to your tribe?”
“I don’t even know if I have one. Least, not that I can remember,” Charles says. “My father was a colored man. They told me he lived with our people for a while – a number of free men did – but… when we were forced to move from our lands, the three of us fled. I was too young to really remember much.”
His expression hardens a little. “All my life I’ve been on the run.”
You feel your face twist a bit and a pang of empathy. Empathy – not sympathy. You don’t feel pity for Charles. You know a feeling familiar to his. Maybe you weren’t literally pushed from your land, but you sure as hell know how it feels – skipping from shelter to warming center to temporary housing to shelter.
Addicts, even child addicts and children of addicts, are liabilities. You were a liability.
Charles’ voice brings you from your thoughts. “A couple years later, some soldiers captured my mother. Took her somewhere. We never saw her again. We drifted around. My father was a very sad man, and the drink had a mean hold on him. Around thirteen… I just took off on my own.”
His eyes flit over to meet yours. “What’s that look for?”
“Sorry.” You duck your head and look off to the side. “It’s just… I understand.”
You leave it hanging at that. Then, you look at Charles out of the corner of your eye. He’s waiting for you to continue. You glance at Hosea and Arthur. Neither have turned around to look at you, but you can tell they’re waiting, too.
“My dad wasn’t around. Like, at all,” you say. “And my mom liked to go to trap houses to get stoned out of her goddamn mind.”
“Trap houses?” Hosea echoes. “What d’you mean by that?”
A cold shock shoots down your spine as you remember that, yeah – this is 1899! And you’re from the future! And you can’t let slip that you’re from the 21st century!
“A trap house is a house where people go to buy and sell drugs,” you say as you think of a lie. “Sorry – it’s slang from the Frontier, I guess. Hasn’t made its way eastward yet.”
“Huh,” Hosea hums. “And what did you do before you found yourself here? If you don’t mind my asking.”
The dream! The dream! Your mind screams at you. Remember the dream!
“I worked for a company called Happy Trails Caravan,” you lie. “Had two mules – Rook and Bishop. I spent most of my time travelling alone, and delivering to the tribes in the Mojave.”
“And how was that?” Hosea asks. “I can’t imagine travelling all the time leaving a lot of room for friends.”
“Oh, yeah. It was nice, but still a little lonely,” you say. “I started doing more local runs across the north of the Mojave around six or seven years ago. Made friends with some of the tribes in Zion Canyon. I started working that job when I was maybe… fourteen? And spent around a decade going cross-country before I did more local deliveries.”
“That was about the age we found young Arthur here – maybe a little older,” Hosea says. “A wilder delinquent you never did see! But he learned fast.”
Arthur scoffs. “Not as fast as Marston, apparently.”
You and Charles exchange a look and he speaks up. “I don’t understand. What’s the problem between you two?”
“Eh…” Arthur shrugs. “It’s a long story.”
You cup a hand by your mouth and half-whisper to Charles. “Marston’s the wolf guy, right?”
He just nods in response. You drop your hand and lean back, looking around at the scenery again. Arthur leads the wagon right by the wall of a sheer cliff drop. You look up at the ridge and the trees silhouetted there.
“We still headed the right way?” Arthur says.
“That depends,” Hosea says. “Are we still heading west, in search of fortune and repose in virgin forests, as we planned? No. Are we heading in the correct direction on our desperate escape from the law, eastwards down the mountains? Yes, I believe so.”
You smile to yourself a little. You don’t really know him all that well, but so far, Hosea’s shaping up to be one of the people you can trust. If not, he’s a nice storyteller, at least. You guess that counts for something.
“You know this area?” Charles asks.
“A little. I’ve been through a couple of times. There’s a livestock town not too far from here, called Valentine.” Hosea hooks his thumb over his shoulder at you. “Was telling them and Arthur about it earlier. Cowboys, outlaws, working girls. Our kinda place.”
“O’Driscolls?” Arthur asks.
“Probably them too,” Hosea says.
“Pinkertons?”
“Let’s hope not.”
“And this place we’re going…” Arthur shifts, giving the reins a light snap. “Wait, what’s it called again?”
You turn and watch the riverbed pass by as they continue to talk. The place is called Horseshoe Overlook, like Hosea told you earlier. They talk about the Blackwater job and about Dutch doing things that weren’t like him. (That confuses you a bit. He’s a nice guy, as far as you can tell. But everyone has their limit, and from what you can infer, the ferry was Dutch’s limit.) A few more sentences later, you get the distinct feeling you shouldn’t be listening in on this conversation. Instead, you turn to Charles.
“Are you doing okay?” You ask.
“I’m fine,” Charles says. “Do I… not look okay?”
You laugh awkwardly and scratch your cheek. “No, no. I’m just… asking to be polite.”
His eyebrows draw together a little and he frowns a bit. “Okay.”
You inhale deeply and draw your lips into a thin line, then nod, then look away. 1899 is such a weird year to be alive. Or… to be in a coma in? Like, you’re in a coma and your coma dream is set in 1899. This is so confusing.
Javier’s voice from up ahead breaks your thoughts (and keeps you from going into a spiral, really).
“There you are, brother!” He points further down the trail. “Head in there and follow the track for a bit.”
“Thanks,” Arthur says.
“Hey, slow up,” Javier calls. “I’ll jump on.”
Javier catches up as Arthur slows down. He hops up onto the tailgate step, holding onto the side of the wagon for extra support. You give him a smile and he nods in return.
“Any trouble getting in here, Javier?” Hosea asks from up front.
“No, it went well,” Javier says. “This is a good spot.”
“Excellent!” Hosea says. “I think this’ll work for us. For now, anyway.”
You lean to the side and watch as Horseshoe Overlook comes into view. It’s a nice spot, like Javier said. Some of the grass has already been worn down from all the recent moving around the people and the horses have been doing. A few tents have already been set up, but not all of them.
“Here we are, folks,” Hosea says. “Home, sweet home.”
“You weren’t wrong, Hosea!” Dutch calls from inside the camp. “This place… is perfect.”
Hosea climbs off, and you take that as a hint to get off and start unloading. Charles looks inside the trunk you were sitting on before and tells you that it’s bedding. You take it from him and head over to the tents.
Most of the rest of the day passes like that. Everything needs to be unpacked and worked on. There was a small interruption when Dutch got up on his soapbox and gave a quick speech about everyone pitching in. He told the gang their fake backstory – that you and the rest of them are a group of itinerant workers whose factory got shut down up north.
Evening comes quietly and quickly, and night follows it. The sheer drop on the outskirts of camp serves as a nice place to sit and think.
The stars are so much more bright than they are back in your time. (Your time? Or is it real life? Waking life? Who knows? And, at this point, who cares?) They twinkle and blink and almost seem to dance. They group together and look like they’re spilling from one center source. The moon is nice and full on the horizon. You can see the craters and indents in her surface. It’s like you’re looking up at millions of silver nails driven into dark blue velvet, with the white head of a spike serving as the moon. It’s beautiful, for lack of better words.
“Hey.”
You gasp and tense, glancing over your shoulder. It’s Arthur.
You return to looking up at the sky. “Jesus… What do you want?”
“Charles told me to ask you if you’ve eaten,” Arthur says. “Well? Have you?”
“Uh, yeah,” you say. “I’m good.”
Even though you think the conversation is over, you can still feel Arthur behind you. It seems that these people either don’t know how to end a conversation or it’s just different in 1899.
“The stars.” You glance over your shoulder at Arthur, then away again. “I’m… I’m looking at the stars. If you were curious.”
“Uh huh?” Arthur hums. “And what’s so fascinating about them stars?”
“It’s just that, uh… I couldn’t see them as well out west,” you say. “Where I’m from. Here, I can see them so clearly. They look so real.”
Like I could just reach out and touch them… I mean, this is a coma or something like that. Maybe I could. Maybe I can.
“I mean, I know they’re real,” you say, your voice laced with laughter. “I’m not – I’m not stupid. They’re just pretty. That’s all.”
“Whatever you say,” Arthur says.
He steps forward into your peripheral vision. You glance at him, then away, like a child after they’ve been scolded for staring. You push down the instinct to shrink away and look at him.
He takes out a hand-rolled cigarette and puts it between his lips. He strikes a match with the bottom of his boot and lights it. The cherry of the cigarette lights up his face, casting warm light and soft shadows.
“You want one?” Arthur asks.
“Huh?” You blink, then look away. “No. No, thank you. I don’t smoke.”
“If you say so,” he says.
You can see Arthur look up at the stars out of the corner of your eye. He takes a deep drag from his cigarette, then exhales the smoke through his nose. The cherry of the cigarette flickers, then resumes glowing softly.
You join him in looking up. Sure enough, the stars are still there, and the stars are still real. All seem to spill from a single source. The moon is a little higher above the horizon – no longer touching it, but hovering in the sky.
Usually, you’d never get moments like this. You’d usually work from sunrise until sunset and pick up extra shifts and overtime where you could. It’s nice to see the world like this. Natural. Raw. Even if you have to ignore Arthur’s presence extra-hard, you still manage to enjoy the moment.
Everything’s just so slow back… then? Back now? Back now. Everything’s so slow back now. It’s like a break. A break from the jackrabbit-style, too-quick, so-fast-it’ll-give-you-a-heart-attack type of living you’re used to. A forced break, but a break nonetheless.
Breaks are nice. You watch a star flicker, twinkle, then blink into darkness.
Maybe you should take breaks more often.

I’m gonna start by saying this is a valid analysis, and I think understand what you mean. And also that I haven’t listened to the whole fireside yet (just a clip they posted), so if I’m missing big things I apologize.
But I think the context of the rest of the story is left out here and changes a lot.
Because everywhere else they go, there are just as many flaws, just as many ignorant people and harmful systems.
I need to listen to the newest episode a few more times (I’ve listened to most of the show multiple times), but it did not stand out to me as a notably different treatment of people. I’m rural, have been my whole life, and this did not stand out to me as unfair.
Rural especially America (because that’s what I can speak on) is as a whole more conservative, and a host of other harmful behaviors. That’s a generalization and unfair to always assume, and I have a lot of problems with the way urban people talk about rural people and places, but these places are conservative, partly because of the way rural communities are treated, which reinforces itself.
But think about The Citadel. They spend a whole arc there, and show how uncomfortable the actual foundations and daily lives of The Citadel are, beneath all the surface beauty and innovation and convenience. They show the exploitation, the surveillance, the bureaucracy, the all around imperialism.
Or Port Talon, how the communities are kind of disparate and uncommunicative, how this apparently rogue imperial project has affected them, but how most people are just trying to get by. Plus getting into the Azure Battalion somewhat, showing lower ranking military.
And then think about Toma, about Ame’s home, about Ame. Ame is rural. It would be a whole other discussion to talk about her life there, being alienated even in this community that’s supposed to be small and tight knit, because of who she is and how she approaches the world.
But I think the nuance of that, combined with the urban places of Umora not being glamorized or (imo) held any higher than the rural places, is important. We don’t just get to see shitty and dumb lower ranks and rural people. I think the cast are good at not dehumanizing or just dismissing characters who act ignorant and shitty. Those people being kind and helpful doesn’t mean they can’t also be extremely biased and think and do bad things, especially under the pressure of an active war and not having access to the same information as other places.
Plus the focus during the end of arc one on the soldiers who were killed. They are not just a footnote or unimportant, and the main 3 are confronted with that. The narrative doesn’t dismiss them even though to us they are literally faceless and nameless. We didn’t know them, and they’re important regardless.
We’ll have to see how the next few episodes go, and I’m not saying this concern is unfounded or that there is no bias here, that it can’t be improved, but I think picking just this example doesn’t take in the bulk of the important nuance.
To be clear up top, I really love Worlds Beyond Number, and I love the stories and the authenticity and groundedness of it. But listening to this last episode and then the fireside was doubly difficult because:
- I come from a military family that is not officer class (aka my fam would have been imperial infantry and not wizards)
- I grew up rural around lots of farmers and hunters
And some of the statements around both rural people and rank and file military (while likely very true in the story and in this world) in the fireside rubbed me the wrong way. I love Brennan and his mind and worldbuilding, and I understand the purpose of this episode was to lean into the tensions in Ame’s worldview and the truth of Eursolon’s backstory, but damn. The whole ‘these people are stupid and ignorant’ thing sucks, because yeah, there are stupid and ignorant people for sure that are rank and file and rural, but also the perspective feels quite privileged. We got to see good wizards AND bad wizards, but we only get to see shitty and dumb lower ranks. And that’s not the truth I knew growing up military, at all. We got to see very kind but stupid farmers, and while the kindness was a bonus the stupidity across the bar sucked, because some of the smartest people I ever met didn’t make it through grade school.
There was talk in the fireside about xenophobia, and it just felt kinda bad that this person I see as a very clever smart and educated person couldn’t see some of the hypocrisy in that.
So to counter some of what I heard, I want to put out some of my experiences.
Military
- there are xenophobic idiots in the lower ranks, that’s for sure, but there are also a lot of people who are much more involved in the ‘boots on the ground’ field work, especially in peace-keeping, in the lower ranks. This includes cultural exchange and engaging and helping the populace. They often see more and know more, speak the language, and learn proper customs.
- Promotion is supposed to be a meritocracy, but often it is not. If you buck against the system and call out its errors, you won’t be promoted, much like my mother, who was a woman, a corporal, and got the wing commander’s commendation more times than most officers in her squadron, started a mediation program, and was an outspoken feminist who was constantly pushing for justice and fairness.
- typical, lower ranks consider anyone above a seargent fairly ‘out of touch’ with reality, and may have to do their best to work around bad orders, because often, officers are seen as ‘not getting their hands dirty/knowing the truth of a situation’.
- typically higher ranking officers are arrogant and rude and have an elitist mentality, thinking they are better than the lower ranks. In my experience, this is often not the case, as higher-ranking officers typically pay their way for their rank (can afford officer training) which is typically not something available to they generally poor and lower class rank and file.
- sometimes people in lower ranks think very simplistically, and are not good people, but that’s a general outlier in the same way that it is for other groups of people. The bell curve applies to pretty much everything.
- many people in lower ranks join up because they are poor and need money, and the military pays for schooling and is an opportunity to travel. They typically don’t join up because they’re stupid, crude, crass fuckos who like to hurt people. The military is predatory and it feeds on the poor and lower-class citizens who don’t have much social mobility. They’re often not stupid, but they are typically pragmatic, and yeah, the language can be crass, but speaking crassly speaks to culture not goodness.
Rural
- intelligence is, in my opinion, situational. I might be able to quote Shakespeare and get into a deep philosophical debate but that’s not doing me any good when I need to help a cow that’s scared and in pain give birth to a breeched calf. But this very cool farmer I knew could talk down this cow and know just where to position his hands to turn a calf inside the womb. Show me a typical master’s student who can do that.
- I knew people who could read weather sign, bird sign, tree sign, and bear sign, who could read the woods and the trails like a picture book. They might not be able to speak much about the science of climate change, but they damn sure know it from a micro level by being able to spot the size of tree buds in the winter to know spring’s coming earlier, and that’s bad for a lot of plants and animals and the ecosystem that sustains itself, which they are intimately aware of.
- I also knew farmers and rural folks who were highly educated and moved out to the country to enjoy the wide open spaces and privacy, who had big libraries and talked about history with me, who fed my curiosity and helped me stay humble and ask questions.
- I knew rural folks so poor they lived in a shack and ate squirrel, and I also knew how everyone in the community took care to give their kids’ piano lessons because it was the only money coming into that household, and took care to just have accidentally bought a little more than what they needed of this or that and ran it down to that family.
- I also know we were so poor sometimes that I went without a winter coat in northern Alberta for 3 years, but that I was always given lots of hats and scarves and mittens and sweaters by the neighbours.
- I also knew lots of shitty, stupid, sexist and racist people who were essentially brainwashed by a cult and who were never taught to think critically or encouraged to do so. I know that they are afraid of the world because that’s what they’ve been taught. And yes, it’s on them for never getting out and being way more comfy in their bubble than outside of it, but that’s what being in a cult does, it stacks the deck against your own intelligence and curiosity.
- I knew too, many of rural folks who would have been extraordinarily embarrassed to be impolite and refer to a trans woman as a man, or vice-versa, because manners and politeness matter a whole lot in a small community. At the same time, there was definitely the opposite as well, and I knew kids who gotten beaten up regularly for being 2SLGBTQIA+.
It’s complicated, complex, and nuanced everywhere. No group is a monolith, even if it feels justified and easy in the world we live in to lump all ‘like’ people together. I just really hope in the next few episodes we see some nuance in the infantry and the officers, as well as with any rural folk they engage with too. They’re all usually so good with a nuanced take, and I really really hope this was just one episode and an off-the-cuff, didn’t-really-think-about-what-he-was-saying discussion.
And I get it. To my knowledge, Brennan grew up in New York (or at least a city?) and may have not had a ton of experiences living rural outside of the summer camp he was a counsellor at, so he may not have had a lot of time or opportunity to engage with rural people at a true community level. I don’t know his engagement with the military community either, and my experience is with Canadian and not American military, so there’s likely some difference and nuance too.
I dunno. I have a lot of hope and faith in this very cool group of storytellers, and they have not disappointed me in the story thus far, so I believe we’ll see some great nuance to come. Just had to put it out there.
