Tbh i dont understand why ppl are hatin on mon-el's confession to kara. I ship lena and kara too but doesnt mean u need to shit on mon-el. Wjen he told kara about his feelings he did it in a matire and adult way. He didnt pressure her into giving him a straigt answer or tried to kiss her or beg her to give him a chance. He just calmly accepted her decision and decided he still wanted to be her partner and train with her. He still wants to help ppl and didnt want his feelings to get in the way.

I thought that people who don’t ship them would love that confession! I was so surprised. Then again, I keep thinking people will be happy with an episode and then coming online to find it is not so.

But because she didn’t really reciprocate, and I figured people would love that. And he also was respectful, so there shouldn’t have been much room for hate. I mean, compare it to Winn’s and he did everything right. I’m like, I get that you wish he didn’t have those feelings to begin with, but this was the best possible option right now for non-shippers.

Kara will likely change her mind or realize her feelings or whatever, but this allows us some more time for a gay-ass reading of everything.

I think people are less forgiving of Mon-El because of the kind of character he is. The whole frat boy thing is especially unappealing to many wlw (which, let’s be real, make up like 99% of the tumblr fandom). But in all honestly. he has flaws, but so do the other characters. And the show knows that they’re flaws. So we can be sure his character is going to change for the better.

Cat Grant had flaws, too. She practically verbally abused all of her workers, but we saw her character arc heading toward the light and forgave these qualities. Now, I know people are going to be like “But Cat was always out for the greater good, and Mon-El isn’t!” And it’s a good point.

But plenty of fictional characters have the same kind of selfish heroic qualities (I’ll save the people I love, and only others if it doesn’t put the ones I love in danger) that Mon-El has, but are still loved by fans. Katniss Everdeen jumps out to me. She only cared about the people she loved, but she was still a hero. Not a true hero in heart, like Peeta (Like Kara), but someone who tried to protect people.

If Alex had this quality, if she said she’d sacrifice anyone for Kara’s life, would we fault her? The only person in this show who I know for sure would value the greater good above the individuals she loves in her life is Kara. (Cat comes close, because of her pragmatism and urge to change the world for the better, but I think maybe she’d burn it all for her sons.)

Frankly, people falling in love and then risking their mission to save each other (for the purpose of more “we just can’t be together...”) is a huge trope in fiction, which people just don’t usually criticize.

As for Supercorp, I’m sure there are plenty of fics in which Lena chooses Kara’s life over the good of the world- even if I personally prefer the idea of them both choosing to be a hero for the world above love. (Legend of The Seeker Au? Someone talk to me about this.)

But yeah, I agree with you. But I don’t think the fandom is going to change in this regard. People will have to come around on their own. You can’t convince people to like someone, and if they don’t like someone, they’ll look for validation to dislike them. It’s human nature. And because so many people are feeling this way, it’s a spiral of validation of hate.

Mon-El is a new character, so not many people have strongly-pro feelings about him. And he’s not really established enough for these people to have good reasons to like him. They’re mostly like “he’s nice to look at”, “he has funny lines”, “I like the storyline that may happen in the future”, or “I’ve looked into his character more than what has been shown and like the depth I’ve created”. At least at this stage.

So the equation of few people liking him a lot (without fully developed proof of his goodness) and a lot of people disliking him, the hate for Mon-El will only grow. Not to mention that those who really like Mon-El tend to like men, and this community is mostly formed around liking women

(which, though I know it is not anyone’s intent, has felt effectively bi-exclusionary due to how vehemently people criticize those who like Mon-El. It is a heterosexual ship, but people who are not heterosexual could ship it. Going “gross, this is too hetero for me” to the image of a guy and a girl getting together doesn’t feel good to a bi person, especially one who feels they belong to a wlw community.

I know people aren’t doing this on purpose, just something to think about. People who want to be a part of a wlw community may stay quiet about their feelings toward men, but it doesn’t disappear, and you could be hurting someone you consider a friend. Idk, it’s a big topic. Feel free to talk to me about this idea, it’s not fully formed.)

People with the opinions I do, who feel kinda neutral about Mon-El personally but disagree with the black and white judgement toward him, might not say anything, because they don’t feel strongly about him. Few people passionately shout “Middle ground! Middle ground!”

So the Mon-El hate will probably continue unless the show itself makes a drastic change in their plans, which I think is so unfortunate, because we don’t need anymore negativity in the world. Supergirl, in all it’s optimism, has become a kind of personal safe haven, so the growing negativity of it’s fans disheartens me greatly.
