AN OPEN LETTER to THE U.S. CONGRESS
Put the Good Jobs for Good Airports standards in the FAA reauthorization bill!
104 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!
I’m calling on you to stand with working people, passengers and our communities by supporting Good Jobs for Good Airports standards (GJGA) in the FAA reauthorization bill. Airports should and can be strong, vibrant drivers of good jobs in every part of our country. The Good Jobs for Good Airports standards are central to that mission and our nation’s future prosperity. Billions of our public dollars are invested in our nation’s aviation system every year, and we must ensure that our public resources serve the public good. That includes ensuring airports better serve the needs of our families, our passengers, our communities and the airport service workers who make it all possible.
It is evident that our air travel industry is in crisis. From record flight cancellations during summer travel peaks to mountains of lost luggage during the holiday travel season. Airports are critical publicly-funded infrastructure vital to the health of our local communities and global economy, but right now airports aren't working the way they should for travelers or airport service workers — a largely Black, brown, multiracial and immigrant service workforce. These working people, including cleaners, wheelchair agents, baggage handlers, concessionaires and ramp workers, keep airports safe and running smoothly even through a global pandemic, climate disasters and busy travel seasons. Yet many are underpaid and underprotected--even as some major airlines rake in record profit and billions of our tax dollars are invested in our national air travel system.
Domestic passenger numbers increased by 80% between 2020 and 2021, total industry employment fell by nearly 14%, leaving airport service workers to sometimes clean entire airplanes in as little as five minutes as many take on additional responsibilities outside of their typical job duties. Meanwhile, wages have barely budged for airport service workers in 20 years. The Good Jobs for Good Airports standards has the power to transform workers’ lives by ensuring airport service workers have the pay and benefits they need to care for their families.
The Good Jobs for Good Airports standards would help build a stronger, safer, more resilient air travel industry by making airport service jobs good jobs with living wages and benefits like affordable healthcare for all airport workers. Airport service workers at more than 130 covered airports would be supported through established wage and benefit standards, putting money back into hundreds of local economies and helping families thrive. If passed over 73% of wage increases will go to workers making $20 or less, estimates show.
I urge you to include the Good Jobs for Good Airports standards in the FAA reauthorization bill, and help ensure our public money serves the public good.

"Happy Birthday, Sam" please?? I'm sensing fluff??
Oh, yes, this one. So I started it last year in preparation for Sam's birthday, but I didn't finish it in time to post for his birthday. Then I didn't finish it this year either. Maybe next year?
It's about Bucky taking Sam on a surprise romantic getaway for his birthday, during which Sam gets several uninterrupted days of relaxation and Bucky seeing to his every wish. Big "Bucky spoiling Sam" energy in this fic, if I ever get it written.
Here's a snippet from the morning before they catch their flight:
Sam rubs the sleep from his eyes and blinks a few times to bring Bucky into focus. Bucky’s got that sneaky look on his face that spells trouble, but the warm affection in his eyes softens the expression.
“C’mon, doll, I can’t cancel just because you’ve decided to sleep in for the first time since I met you,” Bucky continues. “Any other time, and you know I’d let you sleep.”
Sam turns his head and yawns, and Bucky takes advantage by kissing the soft spot just below Sam’s ear. “If you’ve had these plans for months, why am I just now hearing about it?” Sam asks when he turns back to meet Bucky’s eyes.
Bucky grins. “You do remember what tomorrow is, right?”
Sam frowns, thinking hard, trying to visualize his desk calendar. He doesn’t have any meetings until next week, and he’s pretty sure there aren’t any extra press appearances or training sessions scheduled for tomorrow either. It’s nothing to do with Sarah and the boys, he’s pretty sure. It’s September, so it’s probably not a holiday. He frowns. Sam and Bucky haven’t been together long enough for it to be an anniversary, right? Unless Sam’s about to find out that Bucky does half-year anniversaries or some shit. But it’s been longer than half a year, hasn’t it?
Sam sighs, giving up. “Thursday?” he guesses.
Bucky sighs and shakes his head, but he’s smiling fondly. "Your birthday."
If you want to ask me about my WIPs, here's the post!

Kate Middleton will join the Royal Family at two significant Remembrance events this weekend, Buckingham Palace have confirmed today. Kate had always intended to join the Royal Family at the Cenotaph for the National Service of Remembrance this Sunday if she felt well. Today, the Palace confirmed she will attend the ceremony, adding that we’ll see the Princess at Saturday’s Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, too. This is positive news for royal watchers and Kate fans, who had not expected the Princess to attend the evening event. The Festival of Remembrance is an annual event held by the British Royal Family and the Royal British Legion to honour and remember those who have served and sacrificed in the British Armed Forces. The Festival includes musical performances, military displays, and personal stories from veterans and families of service members, culminating in a poignant moment of remembrance with the poppy drop—a shower of red poppy petals symbolising lives lost in conflicts. Kate has attended the Festival of Remembrance annually since 2015, except for 2020 when the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year will be her 10th appearance. The National Service of Remembrance is a solemn annual ceremony held at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, to honour British and Commonwealth military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. It takes place on Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November), and is a central part of the UK’s Remembrance Day commemorations. The service includes a two-minute silence at 11 a.m., wreath-laying by members of the Royal Family, senior political figures, and representatives from the armed forces, and prayers for peace and remembrance. Veterans and members of the armed forces also participate in a march past the Cenotaph. The event draws large crowds and is watched by millions on television, serving as a moment of collective respect and reflection across the nation. This year will be Kate’s 14th consecutive appearance at the ceremony. She’s attended every year that she’s been a working royal. (In 2020, the government put on a socially distanced event.) Kate’s two appearances this weekend reflect her steady return to royal duties after spending much of 2024 out of the spotlight. Kate’s kept a low profile this year following surgery in January, her subsequent cancer diagnosis, and treatment throughout the summer. In September, the Palace confirmed the Princess had completed her course of preventative chemotherapy. They emphasised that she’d continue on light duties for the foreseeable future. Since, Kate’s conducted two public engagements, both in October, fitting around her children’s school holidays (she rarely conducts public duties during school holidays). This weekend’s appearances signal a measured continuation. Earlier this week, Royal biographer Robert Jobson gave an exclusive interview with Hello! magazine, offering insights into how Kate may approach her responsibilities in the coming months. Jobson indicated that while her schedule will remain limited, Kate is expected to adopt a “less is more” approach, ensuring each appearance has maximum impact. It’s expected Kate will carefully select engagements, undertaking projects that mean a lot to her as she gradually resumes her role. Jobson also said that he understands Kate is “doing well” and has even resumed visits to the gym—an encouraging sign of her progress. Earlier this week, Prince William confirmed Kate’s doing “really well”, noting that the Princess has “been amazing” throughout the last year. The Prince has been in South Africa for the Earthshot Prize, speaking with the press during the visit. He described 2024 as “one of the hardest years” of his life, following his wife and father’s cancer diagnoses. Kate has remained at home with her three children this year. She’s attended the glitzy red carpet event with the Prince in the past. Prince William confirmed his wife was cheering him on from home. As Kate makes her gradual return to public duties, Jobson has another interesting insight for us. He believes, health permitting, Kate might resume overseas travel in 2025, with carefully chosen visits designed to maximise visibility while minimising strain. Perhaps we’ll see William and Kate undertake their postponed visit to Italy? The pair were meant to visit in the spring. That would be fun for us royal watchers. Australia, a land of diverse landscapes and vibrant cultures, is a dream destination for backpackers. With its expansive coastlines, rugged outback, bustling cities, and serene national parks, there's something for every adventurer. Here’s your ultimate guide to backpacking Australia, filled with essential tips and top routes to make your journey unforgettable.
Planning Your Backpacking Adventure
1. Visa and Documentation
Before embarking on your backpacking trip, ensure you have the appropriate visa. For most travelers, the Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417 or 462) is ideal, allowing you to stay and work in Australia for up to a year. Make sure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay and have digital copies of all essential documents.
2. Budgeting
Australia can be expensive, so budgeting is crucial. On average, a backpacker might spend around AUD 70-100 per day, including accommodation, food, and activities. Save money by cooking your own meals, using public transport, and taking advantage of free activities like beach outings and hikes.
3. Packing Essentials
Pack light and smart. Essential items include:
Lightweight clothing suitable for various climates
A durable backpack
A good pair of walking shoes
A hat and sunscreen for sun protection
A refillable water bottle
A basic first-aid kit
A power bank and travel adapters
A compact sleeping bag or liner
4. Health and Safety
Australia is generally safe, but it’s important to be prepared. Get travel insurance that covers health, theft, and cancellations. Be aware of local wildlife, especially in remote areas, and follow safety guidelines for activities like swimming, hiking, and bushwalking.

2. Stay in Hostels
Hostels are budget-friendly and offer a social environment. Many hostels in Australia have communal kitchens, bars, and organized activities, making it easy to meet new friends.
3. Travel Off-Season
To avoid crowds and save money, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn). The weather is still pleasant, and prices for accommodation and activities are often lower.
4. Work Along the Way
If you’re on a Working Holiday Visa, consider taking up temporary jobs to fund your travels. Common jobs for backpackers include fruit picking, hospitality, and tourism.
5. Respect Nature and Culture
Australia’s natural environment is unique and fragile. Always follow Leave No Trace principles and respect the cultural significance of places, especially those sacred to Aboriginal communities.
Conclusion
Backpacking across Australia is an incredible adventure filled with diverse landscapes, unique wildlife, and vibrant cities. By planning your trip carefully, budgeting wisely, and embracing the local culture and natural beauty, you’ll create unforgettable memories. Whether you’re diving the Great Barrier Reef, exploring the outback, or cruising along the Great Ocean Road, Australia offers endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.

From "VIDEO SOUL" follow-up spinoffs "Planet Groove" and "106&Park".
VIDEO SOUL - 1981-1996 Video Soul premiered on June 26, 1981 and was originally a half-hour show. The show was created after MTV refused to play videos by most African-American musicians,as MTV made the de facto color policy effective. Both BET and Video Soul served as a place of refuge for new African-American musical talent.
Video Soul Top-20 aired on Fridays, and showcased the hottest top 20 videos of the week. It was also known as The Coca-Cola Video Soul Top-20 Countdown, as Coca-Cola became a sponsor of the show. Video Soul By Request was a two-hour long video block on Saturdays. This edition premiered in mid-1992. It showcased videos requested by viewers who called a 1-900 number. Pete Buttigieg “has your back” during this busy holiday travel season
As holiday travel kicked into high gear this week, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg assured Americans that his department “has your back.” In a video message posted to X on Thursday, the out secretary touted improvements to the country’s aviation system since last year’s disastrous holiday travel season. As The Hill noted, more Americans are expected to travel this year than have since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Buttigieg said that flight cancellations have actually been lower this year than they were prior to 2020. Related: Pete Buttigieg slams Republicans for complaining about flight delays but trying to cut funding This weekend could be the busiest for air travel ever. Buttigieg also reassured viewers that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has “secured enforceable commitments from the ten largest airlines to cover expenses for things like rebooking, meals” and other expenses related to flight delays and cancellations and noted that travelers are entitled to a full cash refund if their flights are canceled for any reason. He also noted the department’s efforts to get all airlines to offer fee-free family seating. He directed travelers to the DOT’s new online dashboard at flightrights.gov, which provides information on the commitments the department has gotten airlines to make to protect passengers’ rights. In a press release, the department touted the penalty as 30 times larger than any previously levied by the DOT for consumer protection violations. “Today’s action sets a new precedent and sends a clear message: if airlines fail their passengers, we will use the full extent of our authority to hold them accountable,” said Buttigieg. “Taking care of passengers is not just the right thing to do — it’s required, and this penalty should put all airlines on notice to take every step possible to ensure that a meltdown like this never happens again.” According to the December 18 release, the “DOT has issued the highest amount in fines ever against airlines for failing to refund customers promptly and for unlawfully keeping passengers on the tarmac for hours” under Buttigieg. The department previously secured more than $600 million in refunds and reimbursements from Southwest for passengers whose travel plans were disrupted last year. Those refunds came in large part due to significant changes the airline made to its customer service plan at Buttigieg’s urging in September 2022. On Tuesday, President Joe Biden trumpeted the Southwest penalty in a post on X. “Taxpayers kept airlines afloat during COVID-19,” he wrote. “They should get a better deal.” My Administration filed a $140 million penalty against Southwest Airlines for its 2022 holiday meltdown. This is on top of $600 million @USDOT secured in refunds for passengers who faced disruptions. Taxpayers kept airlines afloat during COVID-19. They should get a better deal.— President Biden (@POTUS) December… http://dlvr.it/T0dzP0
