Pastel Blue (Chapter 5)
Synopsis: After his lucky escape, the Tesseract takes Loki on new adventures–but unfortunately, his journeys through space do not go unnoticed and he soon ends up on TVA’s radar. Working for them, albeit reluctantly, he keeps finding himself in the company of a young woman, Jess, who works in the linguistics department and who has a truly strange effect on him. Smitten by her confidence and smugness, he seeks her presence like a bee hunting for honey and lets her wreak havoc in his heart without really knowing why. But he is determined to find out. He means to escape this godforsaken place anyway.

It almost felt like no time at all. Had one whole week really passed already since Loki had accommodated himself in her unit? In the books, the characters who had to share a room usually fell in love by the end of the story or, even better, they had some mind-blowing sex and then ended up together, and yet all she had done was play with her vibrator like it would be taken away from her the next morning for good.
But unlike any of the mischief and the chaos she had expected, Loki was a rather pleasant roommate. He was respectful, calm, tidy… and she doubted he had ever entered her room without her permission. Unless, of course, he had done so in her absence.
Jess gnashed her teeth, her eyes fixed on her brown hair in the mirror. Ariana had found this lovely youth magazine in the nineties yesterday, one that had already been thrown in the bin. The only reason she had taken it was because the cover showed a blue phone booth with Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor on the cover. Jess had spent all morning skimming through it, reading the headline article as well as chuckling about the gossip and the ads—even though some of them were rather sexist.
At some point, she found a double page on fancy hairstyles for women and now struggled to copy one of the elegant braids to spice up her own hair. Thus far, she had been failing miserably, flinching with a grunt when Loki opened the bathroom door. He tilted his head upon seeing her sitting on the edge of her bathtub with her tongue sticking out a little and her fingers entangled in her brown hair.
“Yes?”
“I meant to get washed but clearly, you are occupied in here.”
Jess huffed, flinging the hair tie into the sink. “I’ve been trying to braid my hair. Like this, look!” She pointed at the magazine. The woman in the picture looked like it had taken her five minutes to create this look, and they’d had the audacity to rate this style ‘quick and easy’.
Loki chuckled. “You look like a scarecrow.”
“Why, thank you.” She rolled her eyes. “You can take your shower, I give up on this.” She said.
His sigh surprised her. “Allow me.”
“What?” Jess’ reply was all but a chirp but Loki had already approached her and fetched the hair tie from the sink. The braid was indeed a simple one, and as he stood behind her to part her hair for her, he had to refrain from letting her know just how soft it felt.
He had often braided his mother’s hair as a child. It was an activity that had calmed him down whenever Thor and his friends had made fun of how fond he was of books and preferred to use his mind and tricks rather than raw strength in play fights. The hand movements he was so familiar with that he had no need to look. Instead, he met Jess’ eyes in the mirror. She swallowed, and for a brief moment, he found himself remembering the whimpers coming from her bedroom at night.
Quickly, he averted his gaze again, parting her hair to reveal the earrings dangling down her earlobes. They shimmered in the artificial light of the bathroom. He had never seen her without them, come to think of it.
“They are moonstones.” She said when she noticed his glance. His finger brushed against her left earring once more, making it swing a little. “M got them for me on my birthday. The stone is said to soothe emotional instability and stress, and to stabilise emotions.” After all, her own parents were unlikely to buy her birthday presents anymore. “He asked me to always wear them… that they would protect me from evil.”
Loki hummed. He was familiar with the healing properties of moonstones. They were rather common on Asgard too. Only it made him wonder why Mobius would be so keen on her keeping them on at all times.
“Do you truly believe that?”
She shrugged. “I choose to.”
His fingertips brushed against the soft skin of her neck and he sucked in a deep breath. Jess’ lips parted. She was indeed a beautiful woman, was she not? Loki pondered if she was aware of just how alluring she was. How delectable she sounded when she came undone, believing so naïvely that he was unable to hear the fun she had with herself.
Lust flared up in his blue eyes, his fingers caressing her neck once more, and him braiding her hair all of a sudden turning into a subtle excuse to touch her over and over, to explore what their physical connection meant to him. Then it hit him. The inexplicable tension between them was indeed sexual too.
It was perfect, was it not? If Jess desired him, in whatever way she imagined to… then perhaps he could make use of her attraction, especially as this meant that he too would get to blatantly act on those carnal needs simmering right beneath the surface of his very core. He could not possibly trust her beyond that.
“There.” He announced, finishing up the braid by tying the loose ends together with her hair tie. She looked exactly like the model in the magazine now—only Loki had done an even better job. Jess swallowed once more, wishing, subconsciously, that he would touch her one last time. When he stepped away from her instead, she came to suppress a disappointed whimper.
“M is, um… you’ll be sent to a different unit next week.” She said, breaking the oddly peaceful but palpable silence between them.
“Am I?”
“Yeah. Reese recovered well, I mean, that’s what M told me. He will take over after the party.”
“What party?”
Jess stood, clutching the sink behind her for support—Loki did not fail to notice how flustered she was now, almost as if him braiding her hair had intensified whatever it was she felt for him. It had been a long time since he had last had to think this way upon meeting someone of the opposite sex, let alone a mortal woman.
“Dave is celebrating his anniversary this weekend. It’s a big deal here at the TVA, much more important than birthdays. M didn’t tell you about it, then.” She concluded.
Loki shook his head slowly and decided to give her a smirk. Her reaction, blood biting at her cheeks, pleased him. “I’d dare say I am not invited to your silly festivities.”
“M is thinking about it. About inviting you, I mean. And I guess you could… use a break from all… this. Besides, apart from security, everyone will be drunk by midnight. Lots of snacking and dancing…”
Loki rolled his eyes. He had already hated these kinds of parties back on Asgard. Fandral would shamelessly flirt with three women at once, Volstagg would stuff himself into a coma and Thor would brag with his hammer on the dance floor, making the women believe they could lift it as they danced with him.
If anything, however, this absurd anniversary was the perfect opportunity for him to let his charm play and gain her trust. Jess sighed, prompting him to look up and meet her eyes. She stood, approaching him with the hint of a smile both scornful and compassionate at the same time… and then wrapped her arms around him.
Loki tensed up, his arms hanging by his side motionlessly. Physical affection was the last thing he had expected in a place like this, even from Jess. Perhaps, gaining her trust would be easier than he thought it would be, and still, part of him was unable to deny how much he enjoyed knowing that someone at least pretended to care, as peculiar as she was. Her touch felt like someone had set his entire body ablaze.
“Listen, I know you’ve been through shit and I know you hate everyone right now, including me. M may or may not have red on his ledger but you’re a part of the team now. You’re one of us. If we don’t stand up for each other, then who will?”
“I never agreed on becoming a part of the team.” Loki responded darkly.
Jess moved away from him a little, her smile faltering. “Me neither.”
~*~
“You’ll have to explain that to me one more time. When your father, I mean, Odin, fell into the Odinsleep—whatever the hell that means—your mother gave you the throne?”
Loki hummed. That was the part of the story Thor had left out upon telling S.H.I.E.L.D. and all the other silly secret organisations run by mortals how dangerous and menacing his adoptive brother was.
Jess was flicking through one of the thickest books he had ever seen. It was a collection of astronomical anomalies written down in a language not even Loki could decipher and it was so big she had to stand upright rather than sit at her desk to read the top of the pages. She gazed at him from the corner of her eyes.
“Thor was no longer on Asgard and Mother refused to leave Odin’s side. I was the only one left fit to rule—only Thor’s idiotic friends did not accept me as their king.”
“Let me guess… they pretended you were the villain so you became the villain?” Nibbling on her candy necklace, she bit off a pearl with a loud crack. Loki flinched a little. It was short of a miracle she had not chipped any of her teeth yet.
“I saw my chance,” he said. “So I took it. I never saw myself as the villain. And I never lied. I was the rightful king of Asgard.”
Jess bent over to read the small print. She was still wearing the plait Loki had braided into her hair. It swayed from side to side a bit as it fell over her shoulder, revealing her neck. Her scent was almost unnerving—unnerving in a most ferocious and desirable way. Intoxicating. He had sensed it when she had hugged him already and now, part of him was greedy to press her close to him once more and feel her body against his. He suppressed a growl. He should be enjoying his quest to tiptoe nearer and nearer to getting this ridiculous collar off his neck and make this mortal woman swoon over him—not the other way around. He was the one in control. He had to be.
So he stepped closer, his tread so quiet Jess never heard him approach her.
“So you came to like it. The power of the throne?” She said without looking up. Loki nodded, oblivious to the fact she could not see him. She cursed under her breath when his arm brushed against hers, eliciting a barely noticeable smirk from him. It was amusing how quickly he could read her reactions to him now.
The Trickster swallowed. “I meant to prove myself to the man who never saw me as a potential heir in the first place.”
“How did Thanos find you?” Jess choked out when he moved in closer, demanding all of her attention to himself. It almost scared him how fast she forgot about the massive book on her desk, her eyes fixed on his face as if it bore the answer to all of her questions. Loki’s expression hardened nonetheless, regardless of how much the urge to taste her lips rose within him.
“How much do you know?”
“I know what M told me… that you were his ally and he helped you take over Earth in exchange for the Tesseract.”
Loki narrowed his eyes at her. “Then you know nothing.” Her glance found his lips now too. He was standing close enough for his warm breath to ghost over her mouth, her heart beating more rapidly with every passing second.
Fuck. Her office was being monitored. Sucking in a deep breath, she moved away from him and closed the thick book on her desk shut. “It’s late. We should head to the party.” She cleared her throat. “You can, um… wait for me here so I can get changed. Give me five.”
Loki nodded, taken by surprise until he noticed her glancing at the chunky surveillance camera in the corner of the room. Ah… there it was. The fear or shame or both to be caught being involved with him. Loki gnashed his teeth when she rushed past him, fleeing from the scene. That, at least, was something he was familiar with.
He remained in the office, almost as if glued to the spot, for a while longer before he made his way towards the cafeteria where the festivities would take place. Jess would catch up—besides, so he had to admit, he was indeed looking forward to seeing their faces when he joined the ridiculous little party and what it might give him to work with.
“Really, that’s all? That’s almost a little disappointing.” He heard Dave say in the distance, presumably a few yards away from him, his voice ricocheting through the dark hallway.
Loki stopped dead in his tracks. As silent as a mouse, he leaned against the wall, melted into it almost, and slowed down his breathing.
“Yes…” Another voice that Loki identified as Mobius’, replied. “We did take a risk with them but I must admit, I too almost expected a little… more. I thought one of them might… feel something, you know—a connection or recognition, maybe.” Loki could hear his suit ruffle as he shrugged. “Well, timelines can be unpredictable. We do know that better than anyone else.”
Connection. Recognition? For some peculiar reason, he was certain the pair were speaking about him. Him and… Jess? Who else could they possibly mean? His gut feeling, however, told him that he should, seidr or not, get rid of the security footage in Jess’ office as soon as possible. Whatever it was Mobius wanted to see unfolding between them, he was not going to grant him the satisfaction of presenting it to him on a silver platter.
Fortunately enough, they were too far away to hear him, he realised that once more when Jess’ footsteps echoed through the hallway. He knew it was her without even looking behind himself and yet, found his heart skipping a beat when she touched his arm.
“Ready? You know they might give you suspicious looks as soon as you… what are you doing?”
Loki gave her a disarming smile. “Nothing. Shall we?”

MONTHLY RANGE : Eight & Charley & C’rizz (1/2)
Scherzo - 2.5/5 : So... I really don't know how to rate it. Because I recognise the brilliance of the thing (excellent way of using the audio medium, the sound creature was brilliantly creepy and the atmosphere is so cringy but in a good way? Also Paul McGann and India Fisher are excellent and they do have good chemistry together). But I'm not a fan of Eight/Charley so this was kinda … annoying? I liked how the Doctor/companion relationship is explored and I like the fact that companions are memento mori (a nicer way of saying "pets", the Master gets it) but I really hated the idea that Charley was the first one the Doctor really loved (lol no) because like Rose and Clara, Charley is supposed to be """special""" (the difference being that Rose and Clara actually believe that they are special, it's not the case for Charley which is why I don't hate her with all my guts like the other two) in her relationship to the Doctor. Each and every companion has a special relationship with the Doctor, no one is special and the Doctor (whatever the incarnation) loves them all. Period. So yeah, having them mopping for two hours about "You said you loved me, you didn't mean it", "But I love you", "No, I don't love but actually I do, I'm just trying to protect you." was annoying. Just say you love each other, kiss or whatever and move on, but don't linger on it for THREE episodes, thank you very much. And then in the last part, the Doctor admits that he loves all his companions, so yeah great, but what was the point of saying that Charley was the first one half an hour before except pissing me off greatly? Despite all this, this was still a good illustration of my Eight-treats-his-companions-like-shit thesis. (Also, forgot to mention, Eight at the beginning whining about loses his senses … annoyingly brillant and sent me huge Eleven vibes). So yeah, I love some of it and hate other bits, so I guess I'll settle for something in the middle, rating-wise.
The Creed of the Kromon - 2/5 : It was going well pretty much until the end first part. Then it became a huge disappointment. We have two female characters, Charley and L'da, and they're both reduced to being reproductive tools for the Big Bad Bugs of the week and despite saving L'da being C'rizz motivation from the beginning, he just shoots her when he finds her without even considering trying something else to help her, I mean it's not like she begged that bad. And then he's ready to do the same to Charley. Great. Way to go. I hope this trigger-happy tendency will be corrected soon because I do find him an interesting character - I mean he's rough around the edges but there's way for amazing character development so please don't screw this up. The chameleon concept is also great (and wouldn't work on visual medium, let's be honest). Consider me hooked up for the Kro'ka/C'rizz arc (which I don't remember at all btw so that will be like listening to it for the first time). Also, I have to add that Eight's laugh in this episode cleared my skin, watered my crops and all of this. Also! I’m glad to have a Doctor + two companions dynamic, I really love it
The Natural History of Fear - 4/5 : So this was weird. I mean most of Eight's adventures in the main range are weird but this is another level of weird. Like they're really taking meta to the next stage. I don't have much else to say to be honest, except that it was difficult to follow at times but that I obviously loved the 1984 vibes. THIS IS THE VOICE OF LIGHT CITY. WELCOME TO YOUR NEW WORK DAY. TODAY IS HIGH PRODUCTIVITY DAY. Also that end twist *shocked*
The Twilight Kingdom - 2.5/5 : That's not particularly memorable. It really struggles to keep us hooked up for two hours and it didn't really work for me : I've lost interest and let my mind drifted several times and I was still able-ish to understand what was going on. That's not a good sign, people. The interesting bit was at the end with the return of the Kro'ka and how the mystery thickens about this weird place. Also Eight yelling "RASSILLON" at the end … someone's mad at daddy. We get to know a bit more about C'rizz which is always good to take since last episode didn't offer us any insight on his person at all. There's something definitely shifty and not coherent at all about him, like he's supposed to be a pacifist monk and yet, he's a pretty violent lad (I mean, this episode doesn't really count, he was controlled, but in the Creed of the Kromon he's not particularly gentle), which he acknowledges himself (I mean it could just be that being enslaved by the Kromon changed the man that drastically, but still...)
Faith Stealer - 3.5/5 : Ah! Finally we learn a bit more about C'rizz and we address what the hell happened in the Creed of the Kromon. Although, did he just get brainwashed into getting rid of his guilt, just like that? Because if that's the case, I'm gonna be very disappointed. I mean, I don't want him to suffer or anything but it all seemed a bit easy. Also, yeah, poor C'rizz, easily manipulated and preyed on by pretty much anyone is this freaking universe - can anyone give him a break for a second please? (also, is strangling Charley going to be a recurring thing or what? Because that is NOT ok, writers, no matter how much Charley jokes about it afterwards). Anyway, the plot was ok, the multihaven (or whatever the name of this place was, I don't remember) is an interesting concept (even more relevant today) and I really liked the idea that it's completely ok for anyone to worship literally anything without judgement.
The Last - 3/5 : Excelsior used a nuclear weapon to end a never-ending war and killed most of her people in the process? Excuse me? The unpredicted parallel with the Doctor and the Time War is up the roof people. And so I can't help thinking that this story would have been much better in a shorter version with a post Time War Doctor (can you see this with Nine, Rose and Jack? Because I definitely can and I'm not ok). Anyway. Charley doesn't get strangled this time but choked with a pillow. I don't know, do the writers have a kink about strangling/choking/killing women? And her death was the least credible possible with the Doctor moving on from it like twenty seconds after and absolutely not going into huge drama/self pity/extreme guilt mode, so you know she won't stay dead very long. I liked C'rizz very much here, he's actually growing on me much more than Charley. I like his loyalty and the fact that he has a much darker side, when it's actually well exploited.
Caerdroia - 5/5 : gfvbvgttybvgf THREE EIGHTS THREE EIGHTS T H R E E E I G H T S it's more than I can take. Hmm. So, i love the first part where the Doctor takes a nap (he deserves it) and sass the Kro'ka into telling him where the TARDIS is. I love him. Then we gets three versions of Eight and that's when I completely lost it. I also quite liked the crazy vibe of this episode, which felt a bit like Alice in Wonderland (again). The labyrinth part (or is it a maze??) was quite well done and the fact that it feeds off the Doctor, Charley and C'rizz subconscious was a nice to get to know them a bit more (especially C'rizz, whose annoyance with Tigger!Eight was very relatable). Charley and Eeyore!Eight was also priceless to be honest. And finally, finally, we get the TARDIS back and yeeeah! Also the Kro'ka is a frog vbyvegbvfy I can't
The Next Life - 2/5 : Excuse me but did this thing need to be that sexist? I mean... even Eight was a bit borderline a couple of times. I hated Charley in this episode, I hated how quick she was to judge C'rizz and how jealous she is throughout this audio when she's never really struck me as being jealous, especially not of C'rizz of all people. And it's a shame, really, because I was starting to think that maybe, she was getting less annoying. And most of all I HATED how her interactions with Perfection were depicted, how they bicker about the Doctor and, like, I get that it makes sense with Perfection being Zagreus and all, but it was very poorly brought, and ... just no. Also Perfection's relationship with Kip ... brrrr. Again, no. The plot in itself was not particularly memorable. It ends the Divergent Universe arc properly, the idea of this universe being in a constant cycle was kinda interesting and made sense with everything we had learnt so far so that's that. It was also nice to get to know more about C'rizz and I really like him more than Charley, and I hope he'll have a proper chance to find out who he is now. I'm definitely disappointed with this audio, it was way too long and problematic. (Just kudos for the Grace reference ... and it's made me miss Grace so I might rewatch the movie as a treat)
Overall opinion : Well I’m glad this is over. The Divergent Universe was an interesting concept but the quality of the episodes overall wasn’t very good and the way women are treated/depicted here is just a big NO. Big kudos for Caerdroia which was a nice surprise. The Natural History of Fear and Faith Stealer are good too, not as much though, and the rest, I’ll probably forget very soon, just like I did the first time. The only good thing to come out of this is my boy C’rizz

I’ve been watching a lot of Classic Doctor Who, and that really made me appreciate the history of the show. Some of it has been a hit, some of it has been a miss. It is all a bit dated, some of it is annoyingly a product of its time, and much of it is very poorly paced. Still, though, there are some episodes that are so fantastic, it is a joy to watch. The characters and the actors have really grown on me as well.
Along the way (sorry, season 19, I will come back to you soon), I got distracted with Big Finish stories, and tremendously enjoyed almost all of the stories I’ve heard. Stories with Eights Doctor are a particular highlight. Honestly, we’ve been robbed that he had so few on-screen appearances, Paul McGann provides such a deep and nuanced portrayal. The audios alone are enough to make him my third, possibly second favorite Doctor, and there is a lot of stiff competition near the top.
Exploring his adventures, I jumped over onto the War Master saga. Derek Jacobi is a phenomenal master. He has such a terrifying presence, just the way he breaks people apart mentally, to turn them into tools at his disposal, and then discard them after he is done, it gave me shivers. Delago, Simm, Dhawan are all spectacular in their own right, but the degree to which Jacobi owns the role, it’s indescribable.
After that emotional journey, I decided to, *sigh*, give Missy Big Finish arc a try.
I never had any sympathy for Moffat’s era. I had hopes for it, I was looking forward to it, but ever since the first episode of series 5, I got soured on it pretty quickly. A lot of his ideas didn’t connect with me at the best of times, and actively soured my enjoyment of the franchise at the worst of times, and boy was it frequently at its worst. And Missy... was the straw that finally broke the camel’s back all the way back in series 8, what made me retcon the entire Moffat era out of my memory.
Still, recently, engaging with Series 11 and 12 (and it is such a joy to have new Doctor Who I can wholeheartedly love again), I started engaging with the fandom. And it is undeniable that there are people for whom Moffat era worked. Absorbing what has happened by osmosis, reading their theories, their meta made me feel... a bit excited? Not enough to go back and actually watch what I skipped, mind, I don’t trust Moffat an inch. But, may be, just may be, some of his ideas could work in the hands of more skilled writers?
So, Big Finish. River. Missy. *siiiiiiiigh*
River is also a character who just doesn’t work for me. I haven’t listened to the Diary of River Song yet, but I wouldn’t call her appearance in the Doom Coalition, or the Ravenous to be a particularly high point of those arks. I mean, I suppose, if you have to include her, it was workable, but I none of what I heard sold me on her any more than absolutely necessary.
But Missy just hurts. After listening to Only The Good, Master of Callous, and even Rage of the Time Lords, to Missy... How is this supposed to be the same character? I like the Master - they are seriously messed up, but very compelling character, and definitely a perfect foil for the Doctor. Obviously, some takes stand up more than others, and different actors bring different energies, but there is still supposed to be a core to the character that remains unaltered, the thing that makes the character work on the most fundamental level. And Missy just doesn’t even begin to have it.
Take this, for comparison, the preview of Masterful volume, with 8 different Masters:
youtube
I have issues with some of them - namely Mark Gatiss (Can he just stop appearing in the franchise already? How many roles in it can he possibly want?), the “alternate universe/dimension Master”, he was kind of just meh. I can happily ignore him since he is technically not “our” Master. Unsure about Milo Parker, it’d be his debut, he seems a bit young for the role, but would be something to look forward to, seeing where he fits in. Others are a matter of taste. But Michelle Gomez? It’s bad enough that she has a different name, that instead of the name that gives off the commanding presence of the character, she is being infantilized for her femininity. But they didn’t even let her say The Line that everyone else does, just kind of tacked on at the end, disconnected from all of the rest of them. It’s plain insulting, that’s what it is. I get it, that is her character, as it was presented in the show, that’s how she has to be if she is to remain consistent, and Gomez probably gives her all with what she gets, but she just isn’t the Master. And there is only one person to blame for it.
So, yeesh, still hate Moffat, and everything he ever tried to do with the series with the rage of theta1 Ori C. There may be nuggets of good ideas, but it’s not enough to just build on them, they need to be entirely rewritten from scratch to make them work.
I admit, though, seeing some people complain that Chibnall is supposedly “retconning everything”, and they give example after example of things supposedly “not making sense” that come solely from seasons 5-10, and I do get a bit of a kick. Not only can I continue safely ignoring those seasons, now they also know how it feels.

Name ten favourite characters from ten different things (books, tv, film, etc.), then tag ten people
I resisted doing this last time, because all my favs are rubbish men (or men who aren’t rubbish, but are still men). but now you know that, I guess I can just tell you :/
One per canon sort of helps, although it also really really doesn’t.
here’s the thing - if i wrote in that fandom, i probably love the character far more than i would love any other character, because i spent far far more time thinking about them than i do other characters i also really really like. and i’ve written in a lot of slash fandoms.
i also really like protagonists and/or leaders - i mean, you’ll see.
in (approximately?) alphabetical order.
1. Sirius Black - Harry Potter
everyone is in love with sirius - he just has everything you want in a character. i mean, most people here love baz - there’s no surprise there’s a massive crossover with wolfstar. which i, of course, wrote plenty of before i was 20.
i think if i was in Potter now, i’d probably slide away from sirius to prefer remus because everyone preferred sirius, but i don’t know. a lot of my ships have a kind of sirus in them, even if they don’t necessarily make this list, but who i obviously adore.
2. Roj Blake - Blake’s 7
he’s the underdog in his fandom - everyone loves avon! i love avon too - but i really love blake’s anger and weariness and commitment to doing good. and his dad jokes. here’s a thing i wrote ages ago about why i like blake best.
3. The Doctor - Doctor Who
the doctor is now a woman - does this redeem me? of course not. (i was very sad when it was announced that the doctor was now a woman, because - you know, i like rubbish men. but i like this new doctor too. and also, i realised that i was also angry because i wanted to be the doctor and now jodie is instead of me.)
my favourite doctor is paul mcgann - because he was the doctor when the programme was off the air and so all kinds of crazy fucked up shit happened, plus he’s the original time war doctor. plus - eight looks sweet, but is actually dark on the inside. and he makes shit jokes, too.
here’s a thing i wrote even longer ago about eight.
4. Benton Fraser - Due South
hello! what’s this? this man is NOT rubbish. a bit autistic, but not that rubbish at all - by all rights if i’m going to fall for a paul gross character, it should be geoffrey tennant, and i DO love geoffrey, he’s exactly my type. but oh - i love fraser. he is so beautiful and honourable, and i just love honour. and people who are true hufflepuffs, through and through. even as i love me an anti-hero or a villain. i also like them straightforwardly good.
i have never written benton fraser and don’t ship him with anyone, although i was closer to Ray V than Ray K.
5. Sherlock Holmes - Sherlock Holmes
book!holmes and granadatt!holmes, who basically is book holmes. you can see he follows on fast from fraser - they’re men of a similar cut. super smart, a bit rubbish with people but also super kind and dorky. and jeremy brett is divine, of course.
i have never written holmes. i platonically ship him with watson, and i like both the watsons from granada!holmes.
6. Horatio Hornblower - Hornblower
... super smart, socially awkward, protagonist, leader - i mean, you see where i’m coming from.
there was a moment where i might have gone into hornblower fandom, instead of blake’s 7. i wrote hornblower/bush. which is a very true ship, even though hornblower’s wife lady barbara is also amazing.
7. Arthur Pendragon - T.H. White’s The Once and Future King/Camelot
i took authurian literature at university because i loved the movie ‘camelot’ so much. what i learned from this course is that i have no patience for real medieval literature - but i love T.H. White’s Arthur, on whom Camelot’s Arthur is based.
he’s kind and sad - he tries to set up a utopia and fails. he knows his wife is cheating on him with his best friend, and his reaction is to try and warn them both, then to sentence her to death because he can’t sacrifice his whole country for her - and then to hope that lancelot rescues her. richard harris plays him beautifully.
I have never written Arthur, but I think if I was to ever write something ‘original’, it would actually be Arthuriana.
here’s a thing i wrote about arthur the last time i was avoiding this meme, and how he’s the platonic ideal at the bottom of quite a few of these.
8. Jean Luc Picard - Star Trek: TNG
Picard is Hornblower in space. You get me.
i have never written picard. i would ship him with Q (who i love), but i know that picard hates that dick. understandably.
9. Simon Snow
i wrote about why i love simon really recently. while he isn’t a super genius like pretty much everyone else i love, i think you can see bits of him in Blake and Arthur, particularly.
10. Numair Salmalin
Probably the first fic I ever wrote was about Numair’s escape from Carthage - and then I updated it (which is the version squirrelled away on my AO3 under a pseud, but still very old). he’s a powerful magician, he’s a womaniser who falls in love and reforms, super smart, clearly an ex-anti hero. he’s great.
i also like jonathan, of course. and alanna - but not as much. not as much.
the only woman who was even slightly close to making the list was...
hectate hardbroom - who is over the top and emotionally repressed in a way that female characters often aren’t. she’s great. and i love watching her. she would have been number 11.
i have never written worst witch. although i was forced to dress up two halloween’s ago, and i was miss pentangle.
i also like villains - so i love servalan from blake’s 7 and azula from A:tLA, and i love jenna from b7, but not more than the men of their fandoms.
i wouldn’t even really put princess leia on the list, even though she’s great - because i was the right age to imprint on... luke skywalker. (see above) retrospectively, i think that han solo is awesome and leia is awesome and luke is probably whiney or whatever. but that’s not what my heart says.

Dom’s mini Who reviews - the awful episodes
Arachnids In The UK – The Trump guy reminded me of Monobrow Man from the Hobbit films, an irrelevant dick who never learns anything. Also the Doctor murders all the spiders, then is a huge hypocrite about it. Great CGI though.
The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos – Not a battle. Also not a finale. I don’t for a second believe Graham could kill someone. Wasted obstacle of the planet’s trippy atmosphere and the Ux are boring. Yas & the Doctor relegated to exposition. Great production design though.
Extremis – Total non-event. Moffat way too pleased with himself about the number thing. Farce of the Doctor pretending to not be blind played out for far too long. Yet more people cowering in fear at the awesome, legendary heroic legend of the Doctor.
Fear Her – Dull setting. Dull everything. And the Doctor & Rose are insufferable.
The Ghost Monument – A gentle stroll from A to B. Killer bedsheets. Deus Ex Machina ending. Ryan, Yas & Graham’s second appearance and they’re already side-lined in favour of supporting characters. The long take at the start is great though.
The Idiot’s Lantern – Dull setting! Maureen Lipman got money for being in this which makes me sad.
Kill The Moon – Interesting abortion debate ruined by having the pro-choice advocate be a grumpy stranger. Clara could have wiped out the human race. Courtney’s only slightly annoying but Clara & the Doctor take way too long before sending her back to the TARDIS. Excruciating overuse of ‘A Good Man?’ that makes the BBC look like amateurs.
Knock Knock – Dull setting. Obviously evil landlord never raises an eyebrow from the tenants. Rubbish creature design. Pulls its punches on the body horror. I like it when the Doctor says that everyone loves insects though. “They’re fascinating!”
The Long Game – I don’t know why, but this is a rubbish future. I think it’s the garish production design, it looks cheap and feels like a set. The mad thing is, my favourite episode of the whole show is in the same location. I’ll never understand that
The Name of The Doctor – Another total non-event. Smith’s whole tenure’s climax is River Song saying his name on mute. Clara sacrifices herself but then she’s fine. What would have been wrong with Paul McGann doing the 50th?
Orphan 55 – More superfluous supporting characters than ever before. A pointless rescue mission that leads nowhere other than people chatting on a windowless bus. I understand the desire to be unambiguous about the theme but it comes across as patronising. The dregs look good though.
Planet of the Dead – Davies’s writing at its silliest. This is too light to be taken seriously but can’t make up for that by being actually funny. Michelle Ryan is easily the least likeable companion and the writers’ attempts to convince you otherwise backfire. What a waste of Daniel Kaluuya.
The Rings of Akhaten – Annoying autotuned singing child. The Doctor creepily stalking Clara all through her life. Why does a leaf causing two people to meetcute make it the most important leaf in the universe? Also Matt Smith ‘A C T S’ his speech, which I hate.
The Tsuranga Conundrum – I can hardly remember this one. The Pting is unintimidating. An interesting obstacle of the ‘fam’ recovering from injuries is instantly jettisoned so we can learn more about a medic who promptly dies.

Tag Me
If you like, tag ten people you’d like to know better! I was tagged by @gingerteaonthetardis and @imogen-theimaginedcat— thank you!
Put your playlist on shuffle and name the first four songs.
If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It) - AC/DC
Don’t Stop - Fleetwood Mac
I Want to Ride My Bicycle - Queen
Keep on Growing - Derek & the Dominoes
*I do have things on my playlist outside of classic rock though you’d never know it from this shuffle.
Grab the nearest book. Turn to page 23, line 27.
“Some Eurasian prisoners, guilty of war crimes, were to...” (1984, George Orwell)
Ever had a song or a poem written about you?
I highly doubt it. The Bitch is Back was written before I was born.
When was the last time you played air guitar?
Sometime in the 80′s I’m sure.
Celebrity crushes?
Chris Pine
Christopher Eccleston
Paul McGann
Sounds I hate/love?
Hate: my russian dog screams instead of barks and it is the worse sound ever (especially when he does it at 6:00am).
Love: waves crashing onto the shore
Do you drive, and have you ever crashed?
I do drive and I have crashed. I was at work and it had started snowing, I left as soon as I could, but by the time I made it home the roads were terrible. My house was on a hill and, in the attempt to build up enough speed to make it up my driveway, I managed to slide right into the retaining wall in front of my house. Grrr.
Last book you read?
One Day She'll Darken: The Mysterious Beginnings of Fauna Hodel by Fauna Hodel
Do you believe in ghosts?
I don’t not believe in them, but I also don’t really believe in them. I’m agnostic when it comes to ghosts, I guess.
Do you believe in aliens?
There is no way that Earth is the only planet in the whole universe that has life. So hard yes - but not necessarily ones that look like Judoon or little green men.
Do you like the smell of gasoline?
I liked it more when I was younger.
Last movie you saw?
Always Be My Maybe
Do you have an obsession right now?
Soccer right now (thanks FIFA Women’s World Cup) ⚽ AND Doctor x Rose (but they’re an all the time obsession).
Do you tend to hold grudges?
Stealing ---> Depends on the severity of the situation, but yeah. I can happily resent someone forever if I need to.
I’m tagging the following, but there’s no obligation unless you’d like to participate:
@ciara-jane @fleurdeneuf @chiaroscuroverse @badwolferosewrites @c-g-nyx-writes @angryrabbit42 @naughtylupine
Enjoy!

y’know I was thinking about Thirteen’s earrings all afternoon and I think maybe part of why that stands out to me (beyond just the general ‘who the hell knows why I fixate on anything that I do’ that is standard) is that it’s actually pretty rare for the Doctor to make a conscious change to their own appearance.
oh, clothes, sure. we all know the scene with every new Doctor where they abruptly realize they hate the fashion sense of their past life and scramble to put something else on. and most of them have had the occasional periodic adjustment to their outfit, some more drastic than most. but their actual self, not so much.
you ever think about how weird it is that the Doctor always regenerates with a hairstyle that they like? like you don’t really think about that. I never thought about that until today. from a Doylist perspective, of course the showrunners aren’t going to immediately change the essential look of the new Doctor half an hour into their first episode. but it doesn’t actually really make a lot of sense that the Doctor has never gone “no, don’t like that” and gone for a quick trim, no matter what the regeneration roulette tossed up for them. given how much they usually critique their new appearance (and all the complaints about not being ginger) it seems unlikely they’re capable of significantly aiming for anything in particular in the looks department while regenerating, so did they just get lucky with the hair twelve times in a row or do they not care?
and it rarely gets significantly altered later on. Eight cut most of his off (primarily because Paul McGann didn’t want to keep wearing that dang wig iirc), Eleven messed with his a bit at one point, and tbh I don’t actually know what all Twelve got up to, but that’s about it. aside from Eleven growing a beard that one time they never seem to try growing facial hair. Ten reacted to regenerating with sideburns with surprised delight, even though there seems to be no reason why he couldn’t just grow some if he wanted.
yeah again in a Doylist sense I’m sure Thirteen is the first one with earrings because Jodie Whittaker was the first one with pierced ears (I’m not googling that to check) but I don’t see the Doctor ever caring about human gender roles enough to have let that stop them if they decided they wanted to wear earrings (or any other piercings) while male. in general it just...doesn’t seem to ever occur to them to make a change to their appearance besides clothing.
(I’m not counting Three’s tattoo because he clearly didn’t decide to go out and get that, there was no possible time he could have. I have no idea how the heck he did get it, but it seems unlikely it was a conscious choice.)
and sure, characters on TV often don’t stray far from their initial recognizable silhouette, usually not unless the actor went off and did something that necessitated a change. but, the thing is that with most characters we can assume that they look the way they look because they chose to. they chose to style their hair that way, grow or not grow facial hair, get piercings or tattoos or not get them. we don’t usually see those choices because it’s the kind of detail most shows don’t bother with, but we can assume they happened.
not so for the Doctor, who just periodically gets dropped into a new fully adult body and then trundles off. we know Ten didn’t choose those sideburns, we know that Seven didn’t choose short hair while Eight chose long, etc. the way the Doctor looks is a matter of random chance in a way that no real lived human’s appearance ever is, but it rarely seems to occur to them to alter it at all. Thirteen getting pierced ears is actually rather an anomaly in that regard.
what does this mean? does it speak to the alienness of the Doctor, who doesn’t truly feel the need to express themselves through appearance in the way that we do? is it a facet of Gallifreyan culture to take what a regeneration gives you and not try to mess with it? does it mean something that the Doctor has more frequently changed their own appearance the older they get, that perhaps they are adopting more of human culture, or simply feeling more inclined to express themselves in new ways as they get older? or is this all, in fact, fevered and senseless late-night ramblings about a topic that has no actual significance whatsoever? probably the last one. sorry.

give me all the ship questions!! why limit ourselves! and do eight/charley for the fill in the blank ones ofc :D
hahahahaha WELL ALRIGHT THEN :D
what is your absolute favorite ship? so many!! too many!!! could never choose!!! but I’m on a Seanan McGuire kick right now and oh my god Toby/Tybalt owns my heart forever and ever so shoutout to those jerks, and I think I’ve written the most fic for Ahiru/Fakir so them too!
what ship do you hate most? I dunno, Toby/Connor was a Bad
what was your first ship, and what fandom is it from? oh man I have no idea, Ive been a romantic loser since forever…Haku/Chihiro, maybe? I think the first ship I actually engaged with a fandom about was Percy/Annabeth
explain why do/don’t ship Eight/Charley: I SHIP THEM VERY MUCH because they are the sweetest ever, they are BEST FRIENDS and they have so much fun together and they LOVE EACH OTHER, and then also everything is a terrible heartbreaking mess but they still love each other so much and basically: take my hand anyways
how did you start shipping Eight/Charley? ummm I listened to Storm Warning and I was doomed
is there a ship that you used to ship, but don’t anymore? ….can’t think of any? I’m very stubborn, even when I abandon fandoms I usually hang on to my favorite ships
what’s a ship you like that most people don’t? ahahaha Sif/Loki is my fave garbage ship that I will never give up on
what’s a ship you hate that most people like? why is there so much Rey/Kyle Ron on my dash please make it go away
what is the most underrated ship, in your opinion? well Eight/Charley and Toby/Tybalt are both pretty underrated on account of having three-people-and-a-shoestring fandoms :(
what is the most overrated ship, in your opinion? oh man a lot of things probably, but mostly I just stay away from those corners of fandom so I’m having a hard time thinking of any?
do you prefer Eight/Charley as an otp, brotp, or notp? otp! they’re also an excellent brotp, but I am a romantic loser
why do you think Eight/Charley is so popular? CAUSE THEY’RE ADORABLE AND IN LOVE OR SOMETHING PROBABLY
why do you think Eight/Charley isn’t popular? I think there are people who prefer them being platonic only? which is fine, I get that interpretation, but I’m definitely in the romantic boat
rate Eight/Charley from 1-10 and explain why: 12/10 the cutest and bestest and most wonderful, containing both the cutest fluff AND the most heart-rending awful tragedy!! the ideal!!
what’s your favorite headcanon of Eight/Charley? I’ve ficced a couple of them! I just love to imagine them hanging out on the Tardis, cuddling and reading on a couch in the library or drinking tea after an adventure or watching movies from Charley’s future and just, TARDIS DOMESTICITY MAN
what’s your favorite canon moment of Eight/Charley? aaaaaaah
the Stones of Venice and Seasons of Fear are my two favorite audios for cute moments, there’s so much good banter and teasing and just all-around adorableness
“I hope you’d never abandon me like that, Doctor.” “Abandon you? No, and I wouldn’t lose you in a game of cards either! Of course not. You’re my best friend.”
when Eeyore!Eight freaked out about Charley maybe hurting herself because “I’m still him, I’m still me, I still–” and then I cried
“you’re my friend, and I love you” from Neverwhere and like, that entire scene and ALL THE PAIN
“but I love you”
“Of course I loved you! I killed myself for you, didn’t I?! Of course I loved you! ….Of course I love you.”
EVERYTHING IS THE WORST!!!!
remember how he always lets her win at scrabble, that’s good and non-heartbreaking let’s focus on that
“TAKE MY HAND ANYWAYS”
favorite AU ideas for Eight/Charley? ummm I like Hogwarts au for them, and also I have a college au buried in my wips somewhere where they mostly hang out in the library being dorks and chatting about the million classes Eight is taking that’s pretty fun
rant about Eight/Charley: they’re so good for each other when things are going well, they have so much FUN together and just delight in being around each other and saving the world and it’s so wonderful, but also I don’t think I can think of any other ships that have been broken quite as thoroughly as them? like scenarios where both people will die for the other but won’t let the other person die for them are always fascinating but Scherzo is the most honest and most brutally painful exploration of dealing with the fallout of that kind of mutual self-sacrifice for love and it’s so terrible and so real and just god, what a masterful piece of writing, what a brilliant shipalso, they have SO MANY MONSTERCHILDREN, WHAT IS EVEN UP WITH THAT
what’s a meme/quote that reminds you of Eight/Charley? Scherzo is basically its own meme at this point
what song(s) remind you of Eight/Charley? no idea honestly? Paul McGann’s voice is music
what kind of dates do you think Eight/Charley would go on? world-saving dates!! opera dates!! weird alien restaurant dates!! bookshop dates!! dates to Venice when it’s not being wiped off the face of the planet, one of these days, maybe!! butterfly room picnic dates!! pick a time period and let’s dress up and go explore dates!! dates that are just lying around cuddling and drinking tea and playing board games!!!
have you ever written fanfiction/drawn fanart of Eight/Charley? would you consider it? I have written fic of them! two of which are even finished and published and can be found in my fic tag! and I should definitely write more, someone should send me some prompts maybe
#ask#memes#abibliophilehobbit#thank you!!!#THAT TOOK FOREVER SO MANY QUESTIONS#AND SO MANY EMOTIONS ABOUT EIGHT/CHARLEY#I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!!!

That’s a brilliant description of 8 actually. He actually does appear as innocent as the others present themselves to be.
I think he’s probably neck and neck with Capaldi as my favourite because of that. 12 feels like the Doctor returning to that unblemished youth that he was as 8, wiser, knowing that he was right the first time round, to have hope and to gaze in wonder at everything and to never give up and never stop loving, all of that he was right the first time round. It’s just a conscious choice now, after seeing and doing all he’s seen and done.
8 now feels slightly jaded, just starting to realise how horrifying the universe is and what choices, what impossible choices, he has to make. I think that Dalek dream fantasy of a good, happy Skaro is the one thing I would point to that differentiates 8 from the other Doctors. He still harbours that hope, and yet 12 even when literally faced with a good Dalek, has no hope or belief in it and requires a Miss Oswald to slap some sense into him.
None of the other NuWho Doctors have that hope for the Daleks. 12 perhaps, after everything with Rusty. But they don’t because they don’t hope for goodness from their enemy, they just wish to see them burn. 8 is just before the Time War, or during it, I really can’t tell with Dark Eyes when it’s set in relation to the Time War, and so 8 does still harbour hopes of turning Daleks good, he’s not been given a chance to hate them the way 9-13 do. 8….reminds me of 4, he has the same entrancing innocence to him, the same passion, the same hope burning in him.
I think then the interesting difference between 8 and 12 is that 12 is now wise enough to know to never kill, to never act in hatred, not even against the Daleks, and though she burns with fire and rage, you can see that in 13 and the way she handles the Daleks. Her priority is the safety of Earth and her loved ones, her hatred is given the backseat. 8 doesn’t make that choice because he hasn’t learnt to hate them yet, not the way his future regenerations do, which begs the question as to whether his mercy means anything in comparison to 11, 12 and 13’s. I think that is what still makes 12 better for me; because he’s lived through the War and he’s learnt to hate the Daleks, he’s also learnt he was right to hope and to act on hope and love, not hatred. 12 means so much more because of the fact he’s seen the horrors and refuses to stop dreaming and hoping and being gleeful at everything the universe has to offer him.
12 and his debate on being a good man then has even more significance when you put it into context with 8 and his innocence. Both are good men but I would perceive 12 as better, because it’s a challenge for him to be kind in a way that 8 hasn’t faced yet.
Look if I ever bump into Paul McGann again I’ll record a video for you and ask him to *say* he’ll spread you over a platter okay then you get the visual and the audio of your favourite Doctor saying he’ll do that to you like the true bff I am (although seriously when I saw him on the tube he was like eh, too pretty my foot I’ve seen prettier)
Okay though I actually sleep very peacefully now with Doctor Who audiobooks (who knew it just took the chaos of time and space to help me sleep not I) and I definitely do enjoy being lulled to sleep by 8’s rather nice voice I still have yet to become enamoured by Paul McGann’s Doctor like the rest of y’all
Do I love him? Unquestionably. I have adopted him, he’s my newest little miaow miaow.
Do I adore his and Molly’s relationship with every fibre of my being? HECK YEAH no nonsense Irish nurse and her dramatic Byronesque Doctor and YES I do see the Byronesque vibes from him (Molly and 8 have the same energy as Donna and 10 though and that’s the facts)
But personally speaking I’m like eh
He’s brilliant and adorable and the nicest, politest Doctor out of them all but I’m definitely not interested, he’s really not as flirtatious as some of you made him out to be. More, starry-eyed dreamer, he reminds me of me ^_^. However if I were to see Paul McGann on the tube again I would definitely go up to him this time and beam and gush about how much I love his Doctor because I really do. I’d also ask if he’d sign my bag and proceed to never wash it again.
TL; DR: The horrors may lull me to sleep every night but I’ve not fallen in love with them the way the rest of you basic lot have :P

Fandom Tag Meme
I was tagged by @amelias-sunflowers, thank you! :D
1. Your current OTP(s)/OT3(s)/OTX(s):
Tbh I’ve never really been one for shipping, I tend to enjoy stories themselves much more! That said I adore Eight/Charley (listen to Big Finish guys, they’re as canon as a Doctor/companion ship can get!!), and also Doctor/Clara! It actually took me a while to get around to Twelve/Clara because I just saw them as a really intense platonic friendship for a long time, but then I started reading romantic fic and the rest is history :)
2. A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind (bonus points: who was that person).
Probably Twelve/Clara. I don’t think anyone changed my mind, I just started reading shippy fic for them haha.
3. A pairing you used to love, but it all fell apart for you.
I wouldn’t say it all fell apart, but I just don’t care for Doctor/Rose anymore. It’s been a while since I’ve seen those eps and I remember I used to really ship them then (I think almost everyone does lol!), but as more time has passed and I’ve delved deeper into Doctor Who their relationship just isn’t as compelling to me anymore. (That said I have absolutely nothing against it, you’ll never see any ship hate on my blog!)
4. Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what?
Well, I made a few of those “distracted boyfriend” memes before, but none of them were very popular haha. Maybe I’ll make something funny soon :)
5. What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
Probably Harry Potter, which I’ve loved since the first time I read it when I was nine!
6. Do you remember your first OTP, if so who was in it?
It was definitely Lyra/Will from the His Dark Materials books! I remember being so happy when they got together ^^ (and then having my heart broken at the end)
7. Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over Tumblr.
It’s not really a fandom but I only started watching Classic Who because of the things I saw on Tumblr haha. I wanted to understand all those memes!!
8. Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves (chars you’re neutral on are fair game, as are chars you dislike).
River isn’t one of my favourite DW characters, but she can be really funny and sweet :)
9. Name three things you wish you saw more of in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
Agreeing with @amelias-sunflowers about less hatred of showrunners/eras... I respect all opinions and like, like what you like, but sometimes it’s just ridiculous. It would also be cool to see more people watching the classic series and/or getting into the EU! :D But I’m happy to say that overall the Doctor Who fandom is a pretty nice place (at least in my experience.)
10. Choose a song at random; which ship or character does it remind you of?
I don’t really listen to music, sorry! But I recently stumbled across this post where Paul McGann sings a song that really reminded me of Eight and Charley.
11. A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships.
For Doctor Who - I don’t really think I have any? There’s not much Eight/Charley content because they’re kind of obscure but people do ship it. But recently I was rewatching Frasier and found myself shipping Niles and Roz?? Judging by the fact there’s no works in the tag in AO3, I’m probably the only one :P
12. Your most scandalous headcanon for your current OTP(s)/OT3(s)/OTX(s).
Don’t have one haha.
13. Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything)?
I’m sure I do but I can’t think of any right now??
14. 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms.
Doctor Who - Clara Oswald
Harry Potter - Hermione Granger
The X Files - Dana Scully
A Series of Unfortunate Events - Violet Baudelaire
Frasier - Daphne Moon
15. 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms.
Doctor/Clara (Doctor Who), Mulder/Scully (The X Files), and Jim/Pam (The Office)
16. 5 brotps:
(@amelias-sunflowers you listed your platonic ships here, and since there’s already a section on otps I thought I’d change the question!)
Ten & Donna
Bill & Twelve
Eight & Lucie
Frasier & Roz (Frasier)
Harry & Luna (Harry Potter)
17. Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go (prompts optional but encouraged).
I’m not really sure what to say here so how about I go on a little rant about how much I love Doctor Who?? It’s honestly one of my favourite things, there’s something amazing and astonishing l about the way it can keep reinventing itself practically forever and still be entertaining. It’s almost impossible to run out of content too because there’s the whole classic series, novels, comics, Big Finish. There’s a little corner of the show for everyone, and it can lead you to watching things barely even related to it, if at all (looking at you, Midsomer Murders episodes I watched for actors.) It’s just such an interesting and insane idea for a show, and the fact that it’s been going for so many years and will keep going in some form for many more makes me so happy :D
Tagging (only if you wanna): @gallihafry, @beccaland, @eightsgirl, @brightnessrandom, @clarasleafs, @accionarnia, @thjrteen!
#tag games#about me#long post#thank you for tagging me!#also @ppl i tagged you don't have to write long answers like me haha#i like to ramble sorry abt that

The Panopticon Conundrum
Hello friends! It’s been a full week for me. How about you? My wife had surgery and is still in hospital. (It’s a good thing though!) Last weekend was UK Pony Con in Nottingham. I went dressed as a Jodie Whittaker "Doctor Hooves." A few people got it. Most everyone else wanted to know where my tie was. I also did a Doctor Hooves art piece that sold at £80 for the RDA. It was a great weekend. My boyfriend is on the committee for the convention, so I go every year. There's a lot that goes into putting on a convention, oftentimes it's like a second job for him. Lots of time and effort is put into a successful event of such magnitude. It's really gone to help me appreciate other cons out there.
If you've been paying attention to Twitter, there's been a slightly trending hashtag “#boycottpanopticon.” It's not exactly blown up, but people like Gail Simone and Paul Cornell have both tweeted about it. For those of you not in the know, Panopticon is an old school Doctor Who convention that stopped running around the beginning of the 2005 series. However, they recently decided to reboot the convention. This past weekend was a sort of test run with "Panopticon Lite," which featured an impressive guest lineup of Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook, and India Fisher. It was a regular Eighth Doctor affair and I'm sure went off without a hitch. So why the boycott?
Enter Panopticon's website. Hoo-boy is it a mess. It was a tweet about their stance on cosplay which piqued my interest. According to their website, cosplayers open themselves up to getting "a custard pie in the puss," or doused with water. I'm not joking. Or rather, they aren't. This has something to do with Comic Relief, as cosplayers are given the privilege of donating £20 for an immunity badge. One might feel like this is a clear way of saying "cosplayers aren't welcome," when the alternative is "pay up, or get assaulted." Their stance against cosplay is further solidified when further down the page they mention that some cosplays will have to clear the rights with the owners of their IPs. Specifically Daleks, Cybermen, K9 and other full-body costume monsters. I've never heard of a con doing this. This isn't like Disneyland, where costumers need to "Disneybound," to avoid association with the company.
Why so much hostility toward cosplay? A majority of Panopticon's newfound critics seem to agree that it's a hostility rooted deeper than cosplay. To many, this hostility is toward the new fandom, which scans when viewing the evidence. The website reads like a bunch of the old guard fandom griping about younger fans. It's very "Old Man Yells at Cloud." Let's start with the basic fact that the con stopped around 2005. That may seem insignificant, but to me, it sounds like sour grapes. You've been keeping that Doctor Who torch burning for years, and you stop just as it bears fruit? Not to put too fine a point on it, but that sounds gatekeepery. Feeling ostracised because a new generation didn't have to live through the wilderness years is a weird reaction to your favourite show coming back.
In comic book conventions, you see a lot of hostility toward cosplay from the old fans as well. Walt Flanagan from AMC's "Comic Book Men," went through the growing pains of cosplay acceptance throughout the run of the show. You saw him go from a guy who thought it took attention away from the creators, to a guy who dressed in cosplay several times. It's an expensive, arduous, and stressful process to put together a successful cosplay, I should know. It's a labour of love on par with organising a convention, running a fan club, or writing fan fiction. Furthermore, it's here to stay. You may as well be yelling at a cloud.
It goes even deeper than cosplay. I mentioned that it's difficult to run a convention. I've had lonely evenings watching TV while my boyfriend was stuck working on the rota for Pony Con. Panopticon's organisers are not unfamiliar with running a convention. They know how hard it can be. Why then do they hate their stewards so much? In their section about stewards, they go on to tell potential attendees not to expect the stewards to know much of anything other than where the bathrooms are. They don't expect them to even know what day of the week it is. Now I get it, sometimes volunteers are just in it for the free ticket. Some people are morons. Some people are just plain helpless. But one of the things I learned from one of my favourite Pony Con volunteers, Tom, is that some of them are incredibly hard workers. The fact that the organisers seem to have such disdain for their workers isn't just crass, it's downright cruel.
Those of you who know my blog know I can be a snarky bitch at times. It's me having a laugh. I can get behind a convention trying to come off as a little bit more personable by infusing some humour. But as Twitter user drwhofan_194 said "It's unprofessional to joke about stuff which makes your attendees feel unsafe or unwelcome." Which is absolutely true. You can't assume everyone who isn't laughing has no sense of humour. Because for some, being in a giant room full of strangers is hard enough without also having to worry about a custard pie to their face. It's your job to maintain a safe environment, and if you can't take that seriously, why should anyone entrust their safety with you?
I would love to say that the website stops at custard pies and decrying the help, but it doesn't. Of course, it doesn't. This immaculate train wreck is still careening off the side of a cliff. You can also count on a good old fashioned bit of sexism. In a now edited section about seating, there was a comment made about how everyone wants to good seats so they can bask in the glow of Tom Baker, or even sneak a peak up Katy Manning or Frazer Hines' skirts. Twitter users well versed in being deliberately obtuse were quick to point out that Frazer was a man, meaning it wasn't sexist, because equal opportunity. Now I get it's a joke. Katy is sexy and Frazer wears kilts, I get it. However, I also get what it feels like to be a female fan of Doctor Who. I know what it's like to cringe every time you hear a male fan slime on about the companions' bodies. To have to hear male fans call Jenna Coleman a stuck up cow because she doesn't want to be casually assaulted by fans. I know what it feels like to be worried that every male fan I meet will eventually come onto me, like so many have in the past. Comments about looking up Katy Manning's skirt aren't just childish, they're alienating to women.
One has to wonder if that's not slightly the point. Was the language used by the organisers meant to push certain groups away? On the homepage, they go on a bizarre rant about morality and common sense. The words "traditional values," are even used. There's a vagueness like a man having an argument with someone over the phone. You can somewhat piece together the conversation through context, but who he's yelling at is a mystery. It reads like a person who has gotten into one too many flamewars online. They seem to see themselves as white knights, here to put the fandom right. Which is funny because I wasn't aware it was broken. Furthermore, I'm always very suspicious of anyone who seems to attract so much drama to themselves. If you're getting into heated arguments about Doctor Who, you need to reevaluate some shit in your life.
I could go on about the website, but at this point, I'm curious to see Panopticon's reaction. Other than the minor edit here or there, they've been shockingly blase about the whole thing. Reportedly going as far as to say it was “a form of market research to see who had a sense of humour.” This could be particularly damaging as I've already seen users saying that even with an apology, they "wouldn't let [their children] near this event in a hundred years." It's amazing that a convention that was well established as the go-to Doctor Who convention for years, can squander so much goodwill with such a stupid website. At best, it's a PR nightmare. At worst, it was done on purpose. The fact that someone had this much power to take the concept and run with it, suggests that whoever wrote this dribble is rather high up in the organisation. It's one of those "Who watches the Watchmen?" kind of scenarios.
If the organisers have nobody higher to answer to, perhaps the last bastion against their smug minded drudgery is Twitter user walsallmatt's proposed boycott. Has Panopticon killed itself mid-regeneration, or can they come back from this fiasco? They've already situated themselves as the kind of people who will decide the real fans from the fake ones. Would any kind of apology make that ever seem fun? Will they lose potential guests like McGann or Manning due to this bad press? I'm sure there will still be a devout following that will come regardless, but is it enough? Even a convention with a rich history like Panopticon cannot simply rest on its laurels. Doctor Who didn't justify its return by banking on nostalgia. It built upon what came before and moved with the times when it was necessary. At this point, it looks like the only way we'll see Panopticon return to its glory days is with a time machine.

Hello! Congratulations on your follower milestone! :D I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on the Eighth Doctor's Big Finish run, specifically which companions/stories are your favourites? I've finished Lucie Miller's series and am currently making my way through the Charley/C'rizz stories, but I know I still have lots to look forward to! :)
My main thought about the Eighth Doctor’s Big Finish run is basically incoherent squee-ing because Paul McGann is so good oh my gosh can you believe we almost only ever had one story where he played the Doctor????? Also, if you don’t listen to the Extras you really should, because he’s a giant dork who really likes the lunches.
Which companions and stories are my favourites? Well, this should really come as no surprise to anybody at this point, but Doom Coalition is flipping amazing, and Liv and Helen, who are the companions for that sprawling 16-episode feast of awesomeness are the absolute best. I mean I love Eight and Charley, and C’rizz is a terrifying cinnamon roll, but the dynamic between Eight and Liv and Helen (and sometimes River) is on a whole other level. Let me explain.
So Eight’s characterization in both the books and audios is notoriously inconsistent, right? I choose to see this as actually a feature of his Doctor and not a bug in the writing (this is also the opinion endorsed in Caerdroia, which you may or may not have listened to yet). He is both a very cuddly butterfly-chasing Tigger and a sarcastic, snark-tastic Grump, and he is both one of the most human Doctors and one of the most alien (like he relates to sentient jellyfish just as much as, and possibly more than, he relates to his fellow bipeds from planet Earth). He oscillates between these extremes. With Charley and C’rizz, he mostly gets away with it, because they are both very much portrayed as ingénues, even after Charley has been traveling with the Doctor for quite a long time, and even though C’rizz has some quite extraordinary life experience before he even meets Team TARDIS. Charley and the Doctor are one of my favorite QPP (queerplatonic pairings) in Doctor Who, but good grief, it’s not even close to being a relationship of equals, and often veers right over into twee territory.
Lucie is more willing to call the Doctor out on his crap, and there is absolutely nothing twee about their dynamic. But Lucie is still very much a novice; she’s kind of a proto-Donna. And just like I initially didn’t like how combative the Doctor’s relationship with Donna was (in Runaway Bride), in the first series of the Lucie Miller audios, I really didn’t like how snarky Lucie and the Doctor were with each other. It made for some good banter, but it’s not my cuppa. The dynamic got better in the second, third, and fourth seasons with this team, and by the end I was really sad to see her go (like Donna level sads, and Donna is tied with Clara for my favorite new series companion). Lucie comes into her own with a bang in the end, but again, it’s never anywhere close to a relationship between equals.
Molly O’Sullivan gives as good as she gets in her interactions with the Doctor, but she’s largely wasted on a story arc that doesn’t know what to do with her beyond using her as a sort of sharp-tongued plot football. Tamsin Drew gets the same treatment, unfortunately. Mary Shelley was a great idea but I feel like those stories never quite worked as well as they ought to have done.
Liv Chenka, on the other hand, has seen some things. She’s a normal human, with a normal human lifespan, but by the time she meets the Doctor for the first time she’s also a seasoned MedTech. By the time she finally joins Team TARDIS on a full-time basis, she’s already had several opportunities to get the Doctor’s measure. He can’t really fool her about who he is the way he can with most companions. Helen Sinclair is more naive in the beginning, and very much in awe of both Liv and the Doctor, but she’s also had to hold her own in a very male-dominated field of academia in the 1960s, which puts her closer to an equal footing than most of her predecessors. Best of all from my POV, neither she nor Liv have any romantic interest in the Doctor at all (I tend to read the Doctor as being more toward the ace-side of the grey-asexual spectrum). These three people love each other and have learned to rely on each other completely, but as friends and as equals–or as equal as any non-Time Lord (or Time Lord equivalent) can be with the Doctor. Their skill sets and personalities complement each other, despite each character’s deep flaws and vulnerabilities. I honestly don’t think there’s ever been a TARDIS team this well-balanced before. Add River Song to the mix and you’ve got my favourite “four doctors” ever.
Within Doom Coalition, my favorite episodes are:
The Eleven, because it introduces a really interesting villain and kicks off the whole extravaganza of awesomeness
The Red Lady, because it introduces Helen and is super creepy and weird
Absent Friends, because it’s beautiful and sad
Ship in a Bottle, because it is a perfect example of its genre
Other favorite Eighth Doctor Audios:
Invaders from Mars (Eight/Charley), because it’s delightfully silly
The Chimes of Midnight (Eight/Charley), because a) it is beautifully atmospheric and creepy and b) it was the first time I really got a sense of what the brilliant folks at Big Finish could do with audio
Neverland/Zagreus/Scherzo (Eight/Charley), because this arc is peak Eight/Charley awesomeness. Also see above re: what Big Finish can do with audio–the scale of these stories would be utterly impossible for Doctor Who to do on television, even if it had a premium cable budget
The Natural History of Fear (Eight/Charley/C’rizz), because I feel like the writers were all sitting around one night and one of them turned to Alan Barnes and Gary Russel and said, “Zagreus was the most mind-bendingly bizarre story ever written for Big Finish,” and then Jim Mortimore was like “hold my beer!”
Caerdroia (Eight/Charley/C’rizz), because one Eighth Doctor is definitely not enough
Other Lives (Eight/Charley/C’rizz), because it’s a straight-up historical and a beautiful character piece, and those are both rare
Memory Lane (Eight/Charley/C’rizz), because LEGO, ice cream lollies, and the Eighth Doctor’s laughter
The Cannibalists (Eight/Lucie), because it’s hilarious and sweet
An Earthly Child (Eight, Susan, and Alex), because I am a sucker for the Doctor’s family
Relative Dimensions (Eight/Lucie, Susan, and Alex), see above
Lucie Miller/To the Death (Eight/Lucie, Susan, and Alex), see above I HATE YOU NICK BRIGGS YOU MONSTER
You’ll notice none of my faves come from Dark Eyes. That’s because, although it had a few moments of brilliance, the arc was kind of a mess, and also chock-full of misery and Daleks, which are not my favorite things. On the other hand, Dark Eyes was how I first encountered the Macqueen!Master, who is almost the only really fun thing in this batch of stories (and is also, unfortunately, and true to character, also the source of much of the other characters’ misery). But if you want to experience the Macqueen!Master and don’t particularly mind skipping over sixteen episodes of Eighth Doctor stories, I’d tell you to listen to And You Will Obey Me/Vampire of the Mind/The Two Masters instead, because they are better stories and you get to enjoy the Beevers!Master, too!
#ask beccaland anything about Doctor Who#Eighth Doctor#Big Finish Audio#I really love Doom Coalition OK#and not just because I really love the Doctor and Liv and Helen and River

Doctor Who survey/meme
I was tagged by both @countessselena and @pellaaearien. I think this has made the rounds pretty thoroughly by now, so I won’t be tagging anyone. But if you want to do it, go for it!!
Classic or New: I love it all. Well. Up through S7 of New Who.
Fav Doctor: I honestly can’t pick. I have a four-way tie: One, Eight, Ten, and Eleven. I usually say One when asked this question, because literally no one comes back with, “Really? But what about...?” when you choose the First Doctor. And I honestly get tired of the Whovian thing where we try to convince each other that our ideas of what was good and what was bad in the series are the Right Ideas.
Worst Doctor: I’m not going to label one as the worst, but I will say that as much as I loved John Hurt as the War Doctor, and think it’s sweet that he was so happy to be able to claim to be a Doctor, the utter hubris of Moffat in deciding he needed to create an extra Doctor instead of using Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor galls me.
Fav Companion: Rose. Then Donna.
Worst Companion: River Song. I don’t like how she both manipulates and is manipulated by the Doctor. It is possible to have a healthy relationship that is out of sync temporally, and I would have loved to have seen that. But telling someone you just met that hey, you’re going to marry me one day... that’s manipulative. And telling someone you just met that you’re in love with them is too. It takes away some of their choice, and that’s not right.
Plus, I absolutely hate how she’s constantly going on about rule one being that the Doctor lies. No. I know this is a Moffat thing, but it comes up most often in their relationship, and I despise it. Someone asked me once if Eleven will lie to Rose in the Timelessness ‘verse like he did to River... (if you don’t know, there’s a Rule in that series that you Do Not lie to your bond mate.) and I was like, “Well, in addition to the rule, that’s a bloody unhealthy way to have a relationship, so no.”
Top 5 Episodes: Oh boy. Okay, here we go.
“Rose” – This is such a great beginning for the new series. I love Rose, I love Nine, I love the hints we see that Rose’s life wasn’t great and the way she just runs into the TARDIS.
“Bad Wolf”/”Parting of the Ways” – This shouldn’t surprise anyone, given that #Bad Wolf!Rose is important to me. But before we get there, the story is just so good. There’s the fulfilment of the arc from “Long Game,” where we finally find out who’s been pulling the strings of human history. There’s the Doctor thinking Rose is dead, and oh my gosh that just guts me. And the Doctor telling the Daleks he’s going to come rescue Rose and they can’t stop him. And telling Rose he’s coming to get her. gaaaaaah.
But then. Then, there’s the moment. I love Rose’s determination to find a way back to the Doctor. Her confidence that it’s what she’s meant to do. The way she bluntly tells Mickey that no, she’s never coming back. (And btw, the last time we talked to Mickey, he was dating someone else, so why does he feel like he can be so dejected by this?)
Rose getting all the help she can to open the TARDIS. Rose looking into the heart of the TARDIS even though she’s sees the kind of thing that can do. The desire of Rose’s heart, to keep the Doctor safe. The Doctor feeling like he isn’t worth her sacrifice, and choosing to take her place. THE KISS!!! <3<3<3
And then I love the implications. Because if the Vortex killed the Doctor after only 30 seconds, and Rose had it for so much longer, there must have been something major going on to keep her from dying. I love the idea that they could have forever because Rose was willing to risk her life to save the Doctor’s.
“The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit” – My favourite thing about the Doctor and Rose is that they are partners. She’s not just the pretty blonde who travels with him, and she doesn’t idolise him. They work together, as a team, and that is never more obvious than in this story. They make the choice to stay on the sanctuary base together. They’re separated for a large chunk of the story, but they’re working towards a common goal and with a constant awareness that the other is dong their part and counting on them.
And it culminates in the Doctor’s fabulous speech about believing in Rose. Neither the Doctor nor Rose could have defeated the Beast alone. And for the both of them, doing their part required a leap of faith that the other would meet them halfway. That’s what the Doctor’s speech is all about. Rose is his partner, and he knows that unless she’s dead, she’ll be doing what she can on that rocket to make sure the Beast doesn’t escape. That gives him the confidence and strength necessary to destroy the urns.
“Army of Ghosts/Doomsday” – I know, I know. But it’s such a good story! And man, if I didn’t have Doomsday to fix, what fanfic would I write?
“Vincent and the Doctor” – It makes me cry. That’s it. The end... I just weep.
Any DVDs: The specials, S6, and Day of the Doctor on bluray, plus S2, part of S3, S4, and part of S7 in iTunes, and S5 and S7 on Amazon.
Fav Moment: Oh yikes. That’s almost harder than the favourite episodes. Um. Let’s just say any shippy interaction between Rose and the Doctor. I ramble about them so much on my blog, and I can’t think of any specifics right now.
Scariest Moment: Midnight, when they were going to throw the Doctor out.
Saddest Moment: The end of Doomsday. Their goodbye... I just can’t. It doesn’t make me cry anymore because I’ve watched it so many times, but when I think about it, I tear up.
And when the Doctor has to take Donna’s memories. That... I can’t watch that. It’s too awful.
Missing Episode you want: The Stone Rose. :D And Resurrection Casket. :D :D And the one where they talk about their relationship and actually let us see them kiss on screen. :D :D :D

15. Favorite song?Sea Green See Blue by Lily Allen
16. Favorite movie?I have too many and I’m too tired to think of that.
17. Who would be your ideal partner?Someone who is honest, attentive, loving, polite. Supportive. Not dependent on me and doesn’t expect that of me either, encourages what I love, and shows interest in it. Basically I want someone who doesn’t make me doubt myself and doesn’t depend on me (cause I’m not strong enough for the kind of guys who do that to me TBH)
18. Do you want children?Possibly. I doubt myself and my abilities and patience in that realm, I definitely don’t want a lot of kids. 2-3 is probably what I’d want if I had them. For now I’m happy with animals though cause they don’t drain me as much.
19. Do you want a church wedding?Yes.
20. Are you religious?Yes.
21. Have you ever been to the hospital?Lol yes.
22. Have you ever got in trouble with the law?Nope. Have been taken from home in a cop car though 😉
23. Have you ever met any celebrities?A few, mostly comic con. I think Paul mcgann or John Rhys Davies are like my favorite memories. Also this one actor who was a minor elf in lotr.
24. Baths or showers?Both
25. What color socks are you wearing?None
26. Have you ever been famous?Tumblr is the most famous I’ve been.
Or maybe when I screamed at the top of my lungs at a “make the most noise” contest during a raffle at my sisters college orientation. It was to win a stuffed tiger (the school mascot, but to me I just cared cause it was a tiger). I was left by myself to watch the tickets while my family went somewhere real quick and I really wanted it since the beginning of the raffle, so I just belted out the biggest scream I’ve ever done. Like everyone else was adults going “yeahhhhh” and here I am a little 9 year old just shrieking for a tiger toy.
I still have it. Lol. The judge was super impressed by my determination.
27. Would you like to be a big celebrity?I’ve fantasized about it at times, as I do with lots of different lifestyles, and some things would be nice but I’d struggle with having my life picked to pieces and being criticized. I can hardly handle a mean asshole on this website lol.

29. Have you ever been skinny dipping? No
30. How many pillows do you sleep with?2
31. What position do you usually sleep in?Sides
32. How big is your house?Fairly big. 2 huge living rooms, a kitchen and dining room, “5” bedrooms and 3 baths and utility room. It’s 2 stories. I know it might sound massive to some of you, but it’s actually on the small side where I live, I’ve been in my friends house who claims her house is average and it’s practically a mansion, like 3 floors, huge yard, gorgeous looking. My house is pretty cheaply built holy shit I can’t even begin to tell you how shitty they built my house. The space is great but still. My old house in California was 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and fairly outdated on some of the style but it was well built and gorgeous I miss it so much. (That was a stupidly long answer lol)
33. What do you typically have for breakfast?Nothing, sometimes cereal

40. Have you ever had a secret admirer?A couple times I think
41. Are you a good liar?Not really
42. Are you a good judge of character?Sometimes but I generally don’t trust people especially if I feel like they’re taking my friends
43. Can you do any other accents other than your own?A few. Southern. Scottish. English. Aussie. That’s about it.

93. Do you want a boy a girl for a child?I’d like one of each but if I’d have to choose one probably a girl TBH cause my family is mostly girls. I mean I always seem to befriend more guys but say I was alone with a daughter (which I’d hope not to be) I’d know more about girls and their bodies
94. What are you strengths?Fashion, makeup, cooking. Caring too damn much. Idk.
95. What are your weaknesses?Google BPD. Lol
96. How did you get your name?Hana Highway in Hawaii. Made my mom super sick. So did being pregnant with me. She connected the dots. Name idea. And it stuck.
