There is a disaster going down in the library so big, that all the things listed would be minor inconvenience compared to it. It's like an absolute full scale Catastrophy and Dick needs at least 10 more minutes to get a hold on the situation and tone it down to a presentable state.

Bruce: Alright, I left the room for six minutes- can someone fill me in?

Dick: Well, so... Tim almost died like three times, we can't find Cass, Jason caused a fire... Also, I'm supposed to be distracting you from going into the kitchen because of reasons I can't say.

Oh no. Sir I believe I'm going to need you to explain that Dragon Age 2 opinion, that is a BLAZING hot take

I really don't think it is. Although of course all of this is personal opinion, not some sort of divine proclamation on high about which video games people are allowed to prefer, so take please it in the spirit it is offered.

Origins is a worldbuilding walking tour as much about explaining its own in-universe lore and fantasy history as it is about either its characters or the actual story that is happening in the game. It's a cool world! With some great lore! But also it is built entirely around Generic Fantasy Plot Structure #1 and never particularly seems interested in innovating, or surprising the player. On top of which, a lot of its setting and lore is pretty weakly sketched and doesn't really get developed into something either visually or narratively compelling until it gets built out in later games.

And while Inquisition has some genuinely fantastic characters, everything else about the game suffers very badly from the plague of BioWare Magic™, i.e. the production was an absolute mess up until the last minute when five hundred extremely overworked and underpaid creative geniuses somehow managed to wring a functional experience out of the trainwreck. It was made with fucking Frostbite of all things, jesus christ, it's holding together with spit and duct tape.

Now, Dragon Age 2 shares a bunch of the problems of Origins and Inquisition. It too bears the hallmarks of "our executives couldn't plan a healthy game production cycle if their lives depended on it" with a lot of unfinished content, half-assed sidequests and a truly frustrating over-reliance on a combat system that isn't half as engaging to use as it needed to be.

But Dragon Age 2 also has something neither of its siblings could ever even hope to match: an actual compelling protagonist.

Like, listen, I know people adore their headcanons about their Wardens and Inquisitors, and it has made for some truly amazing fanworks, but Hawke is literally the only actual character out of all of them. Hawke has conflicts, problems, needs and drives that actually inform and push the story forward, they have a family and a history and a reason to give a sh** about the central conflict of the narrative.

In Origins and Inquisition both, your character becomes the main character of the story entirely because of fate and random chance. You are the Chosen One and you are the only one who can Save The World because you're the last of the super special elite fantasy Hero Squad, or because you got some green magic stuck in your hand by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Because the character is a complete blank slate onto which the player is expected to project themselves, random chance and circumstance are the only tools the plot can use to position them as main characters. There is no character to drive them to it.

In Dragon Age 2, Hawke becomes the champion because they're trying to build a new life for their family in Kirkwall, and end up embroiled in the chaos and politics that befall the city as a natural consequence of living in it and dealing with the conditions of it. Hawke and their family's needs and wants drive their actions, and push them to engage in endeavors that influence the course of history. They have agency (in the conceit of the narrative, at least) over how their life turns out, they make choices that have consequences, rather than being dictated into the position of Main Character by a literal looming apocalypse that permits no other course of action.

And I'm not about to sit here and claim that Dragon Age 2's story is perfect or that every character is a masterpiece or that every plotline is amazing. No, there's plenty of scuff and jank and things that have aged poorly and unresolved plot threads and all the rest of it.

And I am definitely not forgetting the godsdamned DLC where BioWare threw it all overboard by inventing a Special Bloodline Plot where oops it turns out Hawke actually IS a special chosen one specially chosen by a special fate to have a special role in Saving The World because they're special because of fate and destiny and blah blah, I still think that was phenomenally stupid (especially when Corypheus wasn't even Hawke's goddamn main villain to deal with what was any of this supposed to add to their character ffs BioWare)

But even with all its problems, the simple fact that Hawke is a character you can give a shit about independent of your own projection as a player - the fact that Hawke isn't just an empty bland blank slate with no personality, no traits, no wants or needs or drives - that has made Dragon Age 2 infinitely more memorable to me than either Origins and Inquisition. I think about it to this day. I think about Hawke to this day. I care about what happens to the character in a way that I just simply could never bring myself to do with either my Wardens or my Inquisitors.

Gaara/Gaalee headcannons? 👉👈 (only if you want to)

I won't put them in any particular order but I'll separate sfw and nsfw lol

Sfw hcs

Gaara is uncannily good at impressions- like so accurate it's off putting to see on his face. (I imagine this comes from him analysing the fuck out of Human Behavior™ in order to mask his crazy lol) His party trick is his Naruto impression. All of konoha 12 have seen it and cried laughing and it becomes an inside joke for ppl to whisper "dattebayo" in the most dead pan voice possible to make each other laugh at inappropriate times.

Gaara has a bunch of stuffed animals. Mostly gifts from his siblings and Lee as they're the only ones who've seen his bed just- fuckin buried in plushies- "I don't use it to sleep anyways." <-Gaara justifying the plush pile.

I've covered this pretty extensively (here) and lots of others have this one too but Gaara w/ piercings (I tend to include belly ring and tongue piercing a long with his ears)

Also sharp nails and canines BUT I also think Gaara's teeth are a little crooked, probably tearing stuff open with his teeth growing up and when transforming into his tailed beast form his teeth grow a bit too big for his mouth and so push around to make room. Also I think it'd be very cute ~

Especially when Lee and Gaara first get together- Gaara being starved for touch and affection will not realize he's getting overwhelmed by it until he's like "Actually I need to leave right now" and has to decompress by himself for awhile.

Alternatively, after nightmares or panic attacks- he likes Lee to lay on him like a heavy weighted blanket. He feels safe that way.

They both experience cute aggression for each other. When pining, Lee would just burst into random exercises looking *pissed* -"What's wrong with Lee?" -"He saw Gaara sneeze." -Gaara on the other hand will intentionally shoulder check Lee (not very affective, Lee doesn't clock it as aggressive) or use his sand to subtly tickle, trip, poke at and generally bother him (this does get a bit of a rise out of Lee which Gaara also thinks is cute)

Once together they will add new ways to express the cute aggression including but not limited to: Random biting, dipping the other dramatically, sneak attack bear hugs, not so gentle punches/slaps.

Gaara really likes that Lee isn't afraid to get angry at him or push back against the things he says. He does get genuinely pissed about it sometimes- they're both stubborn- but it's really comforting for him to be able to raise his voice or get visibly upset and not be met with fear.

Lee has crazyyyyy rejection sensitivity (adhd hc) He is bracing for it at all times. He masks it really well by kicking up the enthusiasm but at night he is Ruminating™ and it Sucks™

This will be really obvious in fic from me but I think Gaara's sand acts in reflection of his subconscious feelings and motives when he's not actively meaning to manipulate it. (I think the intent to protect from his mom is still there but I just think it's too weird for it to literally be her consciousness lol) I like treating it like a Disney princess companion- expressive, a little whimsical, and an extension of Gaara himself.

Falling asleep is extremely unsettling for Gaara- he's fine once he's asleep but the act of getting there activates his fight or flight often. Easier with Lee cuddles.

They're toxically obsessed with each other. So enamoured that if they were anyone else they would be creeped tf out~ but for them it's romantic ~

On that note- Gaara expresses his love by saying really gorey shit like "I want to wear your skin" or "I want you to rip my chest open and feel how my heart beats just for you" type shit- serial killer stuff that Lee cries and swoons over! Lee: "He's so romantic!!😭" Neji: "He just said he wants to gnaw on your bones????" Lee: "I know 🥹💕💕 he even loves my bones!!"

They are also always in each others lap or tangling their feet together, they are the infinite honey moon couple.

Oh, licking. Gaara gives little 'mlem' licks instead of kisses often. On Lee's cheek or lips or the back of his hand. He kisses too, the mlem is just instinctual.

Gaara licks the blood off of small cuts that Lee gets. Lee thinks it's extremely cute and eventually picks up the habit if Gaare ever gets a little knick as well. (Sakura rips into them about it but that won't stop them.)

Gaara spent an entire week of overnights studying massage therapy and ways to help relieve Lee's muscle aches and cramps, makes it a point to rub Lee down once a week at least.

He will not admit to Lee that it makes his wrists hurt.

Lee has chronic pain btw.

They both love spicy.

Gaara likes sweets but won't admit it.

Lee learns Sunan endearments and uses them on Gaara constantly and it makes Gaara turn to putty every time.

Lee has a small crisis when they start fooling around, worried about being disrespectful, - "Gaara I think I'm some sort of pervert!" -"I'm not exactly complaining about that 👁️👁️" - it takes a minute for him to let go of the idea that every sexual encounter has to be really romantic and loving- plus, similar to Lee getting angry with him- Gaara likes that Lee is a little disrespectful sometimes- it does take some coaxing for Lee to stop asking "are you sure I'm not being to mean??"

Lee has also learned dirty Sunan endearments and lovessss watching Gaara turn red in the face about it.

Gaara has a hard time getting out of his head so Lee takes it as a personal challenge to fuck Gaara mindless- it becomes a necessity after long swaths of stressful meetings and legislation, he knows he's succeeded when Gaara forgets Common and starts rambling in Sunan 👌

When Gaara does top, it's usually because he's feeling big emotions about Lee, sometimes premature grief that one day one of them will die, other times extreme gratitude that Lee even exists, he's still aggressive about it and honestly a little sloppy but Lee loves it, gets really flustered and bashful about all the affection. Growling, drooling top + giggly bottom.

Lee loves to be praised.

Gaara likes the combination of degradation and praise, especially if its condescending.

Oh when they first start fooling around or when Gaara's feeling Very Good his sand acts up, popping the cork, scrambling around, crawling up around Lee to hold him closer. He's worried it'll freak Lee out at first but it processes to Lee as positive feedback.

They find themselves fucking semi publicly way more frequently than they ever intend to- they just get caught up in each other very easily.

Concept:

That Angela and Shayne clip where Angela is crying over Tow Mater and Shayne is literally pointing and laughing but make it siblings.

Angela and Chanse are the youngest and twins (like 7), Then Tommy (9), and then Shayne and Damien are the older set of twins (10). They’re all watching Cars, when Shayne makes a comment about Tow Mater. Angela defends, Shayne doubles down. Suddenly Angela is sobbing about Tow Mater. Tommy is trying his best to comfort her, Damien is having an out of body experience. Chanse knows shit is going down. They’re all doing the older sibling thing of trying to get her to stop crying because “shh be quiet be quiet our parents will hear you and we’ll get in trouble stop crying seriously stop”. Shayne is. Not. Doing that.

Shayne is pointing and laughing.

Shayne is not stopping pointing and laughing despite Damien and Tommy’s best attempts.

Dad and Papa hear the commotion and come to investigate.

The others decide Shayne has dug his own grave.

Ian is a little baffled and a little on Shayne’s side and also a little proud his children are this weird.

According to Anthony siding with Shayne is not correct parenting in this situation. So Ian does his best to use Dad Lecture Voice™.

Shayne is now in Trouble (with the capital T)

Shayne continues to laugh and will not just say that Mater is good actually.

Angela is still crying.

Shayne is grounded.

No one feels sorry for him.

Besides Angela who actually doesn’t care that much about Tow Mater, and rather just enjoys a good performance along with an older siblings panic.

She’s pretty sure this was not worth it.

Especially since now she’s known as the Tow Mater lover of the family, a false personality trait she’s sure will haunt her for the rest of her life. It’ll likely be brought up at her wedding.

Shayne still frequently makes comments about how stupid Tow Mater is. He has not learned his lesson and will do something like this again.

Ian is still a little bit on Shayne’s side.

Anthony is wondering why on earth he returned to this disaster of a family when he had been free. (He’s also unbelievably fond of his idiotic stubborn children. As well as his idiotic stubborn husband who maintains that if they had left them to work it out on their own Shayne could have convinced the others that Tow Mater was mediocre.)

(Angela was right, it was brought up in both her dad, her papa’s, and two of her older brother’s wedding speeches. (Shayne called Tow Mater sub par in his speech, Angela considered crying for the bit.). Her in-laws now believe she had a deep and passionate obsession with Tow Mater as a child)

Yeah anyway concept over would love to be talented enough to actually write this as a crack fic and maybe I’ll take a shot at it somewhere down the line but I just rewatched that clip and this scene was haunting me and I needed to get it out somewhere.

Headcanon Series #15

Okay, I need some IceMav!daughter stuff or I'm gonna burst!

I imagine a one-night-stand accident or a deceased mother of the girl and Tom/Pete got custody. (sth like that, the point is they’re a single parent)

Now, when they move in together (after cutting the crap and finally hooking up, developing a relationship) the little girl grows up with at first one, then two fathers.

Mav is Pops and Ice is Papa. East-European Tom Kazansky absolutely gets the ‘Papa’ title.

She learns the cooking from Mav because he had to make his own food pretty early on in his life (rough childhood, you know the drill)

(based on a Bruce Wayne Headcanon I can’t find anymore) Ice can’t cook at all. He can set a kitchen on fire with only a wooden spoon and cold water. The only thing he actually can do is an excellent bbq, which he becomes famous for. Ice teaches his daughter all the tricks and when she gets older, and Ice is maybe too exhausted after a day of work or sth, she’ll fire up the grill and provide amazing food for everyone around.

Also, Ice spent his childhood baking with his mother and her mother whenever they met, so the kid learns baking from him.

Mav teaches her how to fix cars and motorcycles. His hyperfixation kinda catches her too and they spend many weekends in the garage.

I am utterly obsessed with with this fanfiction and needed to implement it into this - Ice reads really weird bedtime stories, but she loves every single one of them.

Of course she grows up with Bradley (they’re around the same age, idc who’s older) and the adults around them like to refer to them as the chaos cousins. When Mav and Ice take Bradley in after Carole dies, they become the chaos siblings.

Bradley loves his sister and is super protective of her when they are in their teens. When she got cruelly dumped by her boyfriend in her first year of high school, Bradley stormed into the guys’ classroom and broke his nose. The principal had to call his parents, so Tom interrupted an important meeting and showed up in uniform at school to get his kid. The principal was kinda intimidated because of course Tom put on his Iceman™ look and stared the guy down, so Bradley ended up being expelled for only the rest of the day. (I think I need to write something separate about this)

Let’s take a closer look at the whole custody situation: Mav made Ice his emergency Contact and vice versa. Obvious. In the eyes of the Navy they are ‘best friends’ and brothers in arms; it’s not an uncommon thing to do so. Concerning the kids; they’re always both listed as emergency contacts for the kids. In a scenario where Tom has a daughter, they always argue “we both have a kid, we’re basically brothers, the kids are grew up together; they’re like cousins - we’re a family in the Navy, we look out for each other.” In a scenario where Mav has a daughter, he answers to that question with “Ice is like a brother to me; we’re best friends. He knows the kid(s). I can’t always respond, so I need another person to watch over the kid(s). He was the first to agree to that.” (I don’t know if this makes sense)

Regarding Bradley being an overprotective sibling; that girl doesn’t actually need any protection - after all, both her fathers are Navy legends and well respected and feared men in the military. She can stand her ground pretty well.

The flyboys often joke around if she actually might be a genetic experiment where they took Pete’s and Ton’s DNA to create the ultimate soldier because she inherits significant parts of both their personalities. She gets Mav’s recklessness and Ice’s strategic thinking, so everything she does, however stupid it might look, she does on purpose. She also got both their stubbornness. They all agree; if she ever starts a career in the Navy, she’s gonna be a nightmare for her superiors.

She starts a career in the Navy. Of course she had the chance to do something else, but she grew up surrounded by people being very passionate about their jobs and they just kinda naturally dragged her into it. Her military education looks something like this, I found it and almost died of laughter because this is kinda exactly how I imagined it, this is a piece of art!

She’s just as protective of her brother as he is over her and that’s why she hates Jake in the beginning. Sure, they’re now adults, but Bradley has such an unhealthy relationship with that guy, on and off and back on; then they’re fucking in a closet, the next minute they shout at each other over training exercises - she doesn’t get why Bradley keeps crawling back to that guy. After the Uranium-Mission (Ice lives, Mav doesn’t have the fight with Bradley) she starts appreciating the guy a little more because for one, he saved her father and brother, second, now that both men are more mature than ever and develope an actual relationship, she can see parallels in them to her fathers and she gets why they can’t keep away from each other. (Also don’t know if this makes sense)

Both her fathers walk her down the aisle on her wedding day, she insists on that.

been rereading a couple of emily henry books this week. they're very solidly contemporary m/f romance novels, so if that's not your deal, then they're not for you, but here are some things i like about them:

although they're about straight couples, they're not about Straight™ Couples. they're not weird about gender. it's not all huge manly muscly men and tiny delicate waify women. both of them are allowed to be emotional – or closed-off and afraid of commitment – without making it about That's What Men Are Like, or whatever. you know?

i also appreciate that many of them are m/f couples who don't want kids and it's not a Whole Thing. some of them really like their friends'/siblings' kids and are happy to have children in their lives. that's just not what their specific happy ending looks like

although they are romance novels, the characters also have other relationships in their lives which are important to them, such as siblings and friends. often, the story is as much about the balance of those romantic and non-romantic relationships as it is about the romantic ones alone – one isn't more important than the other, though one might shape the plot beats more obviously

the characters are generally in their 30s with jobs, hobbies, and life experiences. many of them also have caring responsibilities (for parents, nieces/nephews, etc). this makes a change from a lot of contemporary romance and its unattached early 20-somethings

also, regarding those jobs and life experiences: they feel like PEOPLE. they bring those personalities to their relationships: they're not just for show, ticked off on a list of character traits, but a part of how they experience the world and approach interpersonal dynamics

though they touch on grief, they neither brush past it nor make it the whole focus of the plot. it makes things feel real, and sometimes painful, without throwing the whole book into gloom

they're often funny (when not dealing with harder topics, and sometimes even when they are)

the writing style is pretty simple and naturalistic, but it's not clunky – there's a polish to it that is sometimes lacking elsewhere

they're easy reading and i find them a good distraction when my brain is tired. people often say things like that as an insult, as though comforting straightforward books are less worth reading. but. yunno. not everything has to be challenging. they are, I think, well-written books of their type, and i appreciate that

Shouto: Natsuo was unaware he was in a relationship until his boyfriend kissed him. He thought they were just best friends. Fuyumi had a 10 minute dissociation when Rumi asked if she liked girls. Rumi had to call Natsuo to make sure his sister wasn't having a health emergency.

Natuso - like father like son he didn't know he had a boyfriend for like a month until the guy got fed up of 'taking it slow' and decided to jump his ass.

Sibling!Timinette Masterpost

The manor has been quiet ever since Marinette had gone home after the trial of Hawkmoth had ended. Damian had resorted to his usual grouchy manner and everyone was much less physically affectionate with one another.

The change hadn't been immediate. Tim had made a point to do a daily video call to begin with, and anyone who was available would crowd around the laptop to say hello. But as they all fell back into their routines, video calls became phone calls, which became texts. And the thing with texts, at least for the Batfamily, was that there were certain times they couldn't answer.

So now, after two months, the family were back to their emotionally constipated ways and Dick hated it. As another person who thrived from physical affection, he missed the way his new little sister would launch herself at him to say hello. Or the way she would spend quiet time with Damian, which seemed to mellow him out more than anything else anyone had tried.

Or how, when Tim was crashing from a caffeine high and needed more to keep going, she magically appeared with a fresh cup, and some cookies she'd baked with Jason who, surprisingly, found a sense of calm in kneading dough and learning something new. Even Steph, exuberant as she was, had withdrawn somewhat, no longer having Marinette to watch sappy romcoms with.

So when Bruce suggested they invite Marinette back for the summer, Dick had been overjoyed. He had immediately booked off two weeks so that he could fully immerse himself in the experience of Time with Marinette™. He even decided he would live in the manor with everyone else as much as he could.

They all made a special effort to be at the manor when Alfred told them that he would be collecting Marinette from the airport. Well, all except Damian who everyone said would probably do better picking her up than helping with the welcome party effort. To everyone's surprise, Damian agreed to go without any argument.

Dick was charged with getting the decorations up, given he was the most able to climb. Steph and Jason were choosing music, having agreed that they would both add songs into a playlist and go from there. Tim was arranging some party games - karaoke, a few board games some cards - while Cass stayed out of the way. 

Duke was still on the day patrol, although they planned for him to arrive back while the festivities were still happening and swap out with Bruce and Steph. Barbara was due to arrive any second with a trivia quiz to round out the night, and Dick couldn't wait.

When Marinette landed in the airport, she had so much energy that she practically vibrated while going through customs. Everyone who spoke with her gave her indulgent smiles, and she dragged her luggage into arrivals. Looking around, she squealed as she spotted the green eyed boy that she had been steadily falling in love with over the past couple of months.

He caught her up as she flung her arms around him, tucking his face into the crook of her neck. He had grown a little taller in her absence and her toes scraped the floor as she clung to him. He put her down after several moments, smirking down at her before she pulled him down into a kiss.

“Alfred is waiting for us, Angel,” Damian said at last, brushing a hand against her cheek gently. She beamed up at him, heart full of joy, but she let him pull away and take her luggage. “You have brought a lot with you, were you planning on staying for longer than the summer?”

“No, silly,” she giggled, picking up one of her bags. Damian grabbed her rolling suitcase and the other bag, motioning towards the door. “I brought the gifts I've been making for everyone. It's been kind of…lonely without you all in Paris.”

Damian hummed in agreement before pulling her to a stop just before they stepped into the open air. He leaned towards her, kissing her softly and she melted into him again. They had agreed that they would keep their budding relationship to themselves for now, not wanting the others to meddle before they knew if it would work.

While they had been long distance, they had gotten to know each other fairly well; Marinette asked questions about his favourite classes, hobbies, his friends, and Damian asked about her dreams for the future now that there was no supervillain terrorising Paris. They'd watched films for date nights, streaming things at the same time and chatting about them. 

In spite of that, it just wasn't the same as being in the same city. So before they were sucked back into the family dynamics, it was nice to reconnect by themselves. And when she pulled back again, he chased her for a moment which filled her with warmth.

“Hi, Monsieur Alfred,” she said as they approached the car. The butler smiled at her, helping to put her luggage in the trunk before opening the door for Damian and her. They talked quietly in the backseat, not touching but not leaving a lot of distance between them. When they pulled up to the manor, Damian stepped out of the car first and offered his hand back to her. She giggled as she let him pull her out and said softly, “Thank you, Dami.”

Inside the manor, everyone cheered when she came in, and Marinette was overwhelmed with happiness at how much effort they'd gone to for her. They spent the next few hours playing games and catching up until Dick excitedly said that they had set up karaoke.

“Before we move over to that, I need to give you all something!” Marinette trilled, grabbing one of the bags and pulling out delicately wrapped parcels. She moved around the room, handing them out and she could see the surprised faces of everyone except Damian. When someone asked what the occasion was, she merely shrugged and blushed lightly. “I just like making things for people, and since you all are basically family now, I wanted you to have something from me.”

There was a moment of silence before Steph impatiently ripped open her parcel. She stopped short as she pulled out a pair of pyjamas that was reminiscent of her Spoiler suit. Nobody else having waited to open the gifts once they heard Steph do so, they all similarly pulled up short as their alter-ego personas were put into sleepwear form. One by one they all swung back to stare at Marinette, although Damian merely looked amused.

“Was I not supposed to work out that Jason and Tim, who are exactly the same size and shape as the two vigilantes I met on the Watchtower, were Red Hood and Red Robin? Please, I'm a designer, measuring people by sight is kind of my thing. None of you even have magic to disguise you, how no-one has worked out that the Batfamily just so happens to be the same number of people as all of you is absurd.”

There was silence throughout the room until Tim pulled the rest of his gift out of the wrapping and gasped. Marinette giggled when he turned back to her, gaping. His hands were gripping the clothes tightly and the rest of the family were watching him with concern in their eyes.

“I figured if I was telling you I knew your identities, you deserved to know my other secret,” she said, the words making Tim stare at her wordlessly for several more minutes. “I mean, aren't you all supposed to be the world's greatest detectives? Kind of embarrassing that I had to spell it out for you, my initials are literally MDC.”

Her words were met with stunned silence as everyone immediately turned over their gifts to find her signature stitched into the tags. She was then buried under a pile of loving people.

My genetics situation is so bizarre cuz my mom is super prone to cavities but my dad has never had one. I’m lucky my dentist has been reassuring about it, at least- the gist is that well, if it was this bad with the flossing and the specialty mouthwash and toothpaste, then imagine how bad it would’ve been without those things. Which is cold comfort when I have up to seven cavities at one time, but at least they believe me that I floss 😅

Omg thanks for sharing!! I'm glad your dentist is reassuring about it, I think that's becoming more common in recent years but it's hard for me to say for sure because I don't have firsthand experience. And I think it's really hard to strike a balance between encouraging people to do all the hygiene stuff because like you said it does help without making them feel responsible when they inevitably still get cavities. I'm in public health school and finding this balance is a recurring challenge in the field!

Good for you for dealing with all that honestly the flipside of having strong teeth is I have no tolerance for dental stuff whatsoever. I had some teeth pulled as a kid because they didn't fit and a couple years of orthodontic torture but I hear "seven cavities at one time" and I'm like "nope!!!!!" I think there are dental researchers with some promising preliminary results so I'm hoping in the not too distant future science comes up with something to help people like you avoid all that!!

My mom is like me, I think she's maybe had a couple cavities in her life but it's been a long time, and I think maybe dentistry has advanced enough plus changes in environmental factors that someone born in the 60s has a different baseline than someone born in the 90s. My older sibling is similar to me in terms of having the ADHD Dental Hygiene Routine™ and had like one or two cavities as a kid and as far as I know hasn't had any since. We don't really know about my dad because he had a bunch of fillings done when he was a kid but hasn't really had many problems as an adult so we think he may have been a victim of 1950s quack dentistry but I think he's probably still slightly more cavity prone than my mom.

So, canonically Lúthien is probably older, but I've always imagined Finrod seeing her as a bit of younger sister. Probable reasons:

The Sindar are more childlike in general

Finrod has Life Experience™ (due to bad decisions and Helcaraxe), Lúthien was sheltered

A bit of the underlying …I don't want to call it "sexism" because it's not hateful, but the setting's certain very set concept of gender roles where women are meant to be protected. I'm not a fan of it, but also it does influence how I think about the Silm.

Finrod has younger siblings, he's accustomed to it. also Lúthien is probably friends with Galadriel too.

5. A scene I wish we had.

…a writeable scene? Hmmmm. It's hard, because they don't meet after the B&L story starts and them meeting would likely derail the plot. So maybe Finrod giving Lulu a little bit of a prophecy.

I do appreciate the Leithian Script approach of "they do meet in Mandos" but also I see it as very non canon. So I don't think it is a kind of scene we could have had in the book.

8. Who is "crazier".

OK, this is the hard one. I would say Lúthien, but she does have more opportunities to be crazy, but also Finrod is, let's say I see him as a bit of multitasker: he is crazy, but he is also very loyal to his family, and melancholic and a lot of things. And those things are lovely too.

They're both great but Lúthien is more crazy [as a compliment].

Childhood/Life:

Viktor was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was a preemie baby and received a lot of attention and a bit of coddling growing up due to having lots of medical issues. Since he is slightly medically fragile, his family always doted on him. “Don't forget your puffer!” “Viktor you have your medicine??” 

He was scrawny and short and nerd ™ until puberty slammed him in high school 

Viktor has always been huge about STEM, loved space and rockets and robotics, and would have wanted to be a NASA engineer or someone who did technology innovations etc. He was brilliant and did well at school, even better than Latte. If Latte's average in high school was 93%, his average is 97-100% He excelled in STEM subjects 

He was the sibling who wasn’t always required to help out with the family’s business. His parents saw his intelligence as too good for the small family business and often encouraged him to go do extracurriculars or clubs after school. When he did help out, he manned the cash registers since Latte was not good at counting money. 

His parents often wanted him to behave more like Latte, drawing comparisons between the siblings, and occasionally pitting them against each other. This upbringing caused him to lash out often and become the blunt competitive chaotic mess he is today. 

Personality:

Viktor is an energetic, brilliant, resourceful, sharp-witted and knowledgeable person. He craves the mental stimulation of learning but often plays devil's advocate just for the fun of it. He is charismatic to those who get along with him and downright a pain in the ass to those he would often oppose. 

Some downsides can be him being too argumentative, and in a way that is abrasive and hurts other’s feelings. He can be intolerant or insensitive when he thinks someone is wrong or not being effective/efficient in his opinion. 

He is also a Yapper ™ like his sister, but only about his ideas and thoughts. Great if you can match his level of wit; if not, it can sound like he is being condescending and arrogant, even though he doesn’t intend it. 

He doesn't apologize in significant ways, as in will say“My bad bro” but rarely sorry. 

Secretly really guilty and carries a lot of self-hatred regarding the guilt he feels toward his parents and Latte. (especially Latte)

ODIN:

Similar to Latte, Viktor’s life was changed drastically when he insisted he wanted to Seattle for his birthday at the end of July, however, their parents only had time off at the beginning of summer, since Summer is prime restaurant business times in Canada. Especially with school giving out in late June, So they departed on the 10th of July. 

When Odin struck, he was knocked semi-unconscious, he could still hear the chaos around him. He remembered hearing his mother’s last words very clearly as that was the only thing he could focus on with his limited consciousness. Latte pulls him out afterwards, where he regains enough consciousness to look at the wreckage of their car and the roads and the people around them. Before passing out completely.

Viktor and Latte were both sent back to Canada by the US gov to live with a family friend they were close with, during this period Viktor would throw himself into studying robotics.

Professional Experience:

Viktor had incredible records of innovation and was very resourceful, he took part in the high school robotics team, and the coding and programming club, learned mechanic elective courses in high school, and had hobbies in building technology. He was also taking online courses regarding STEM subjects, programming, and, and sneaking into college classes/getting his college friends to send them their Engineering assignments to study off of.

However, despite being offered scholarships from decent universities, he refused them and opted for the military instead. He was 17 he wanted to join the military (further explained in his in-depth personality post coming up). The family friend housing him and Latte was eager to send him away since he was an abrasive person and often would clash with their children. Latte had tried her best to convince him out of it but he fought her hard on it. So he joined the Marines after turning 18. 

Due to unfortunate events caused by the negligence of his higher-ups and somehow major military oversight made by his team and the group he was with. It cost him his leg, he was sent away to heal from his injuries. He passed all the requirements to be a part of the military again but his team put in a bad message of him because he was tough to get along with. Thus making him unable to return to his military career, until Kick found him tinkering and upgrading stolen drones using pretty impressive robotics, mechanical, and coding/programming knowledge. He was then offered a prelim position to the Ghosts. 

Currently working with Neptune, Livi, and Kick to train under them. But is Kick’s disciple technically. 

Skills: 

Incredible tech ability due to lifelong interest and experience with Robotics, programming/coding, and mechanical skills. 

His mechanical skills can extend past computers and hacking to vehicles. Can probably build a PC in his sleep. Can also fix up a car like no one's business. 

Incredible resourcefulness with limited supplies and ability to find ways to acquire knowledge. Mmm, brain stimulation. 

Big-brained ™, super intelligent, like dude why tf do you know so much? Why do you want to know more? 

Pretty good fighter who can scrap and swing on ppl, his height and muscular build def help.

So from what we know about Teddy's mom, she's a bit of a Wild Card™. Likes to do what she wants, when she wants, isn't exactly your traditional grandma.

But given the majority of people become docile with age (rather than more adventurous), it stands to reason /why/ she waited until retirement to do all the things she enjoyed? Could that be why her and Teddy's dad always used to argue?

Teddy's age places his parents as either dating or hooking up around the 70s/80s. Assuming they've never left the US, this wasn't exactly a pinnacle time for women's rights.

So we have an oppressive timestamp, a turbulent relationship, and then an extinction burst (Teddy's mom doing ALL her interests in retirement) post-breakup.

These factors together connote that teddy's father may have been restrictive/disapproving of teddy's mother's interests, hobbies, passions - or may be indicative of teddy's father's disdain/nonchalance towards his wife in general. (I'm assuming they were married because 'merica). Which would be an apt representation of Boomer relationships, the whole "can't live with them, can't live without them" (totally healthy /s).

But on the flipside to a potentially controlling father, his mom IS a wild card lol. If she's still up to mad shit in retirement, WHAT was she into in her prime?? Was she Fully Unhinged™? Given her, "muchness" (for lack of better words), it stands to reason it may transfer as "feisty" or "fiery" during arguments with teddy's dad, so whilst his dad may have been authoritarian, his mom may have been inflammatory and antagonistic.

As for his sister GIVE HER SOME GD SCREEN TIME!!!!!!! WHO ARE DANA AND DAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wanna see if she's exactly like Teddy or if she's his antithesis, are they both so interested in learning about the lives of every stranger they meet? That's beautiful bro. I hope so. I both want her to be an almost identical twin to teddy, and to look exactly like her bf Dan (like the Van Houtens in the Simpsons). I think I want Dana to have the spunkiness that teddy lacks. Moving onto Denise, FUCK Denise. Fuck any single individual that makes you feel like you have to change your core sense of self in order to feel accepted and/or loved. You KNOW she's that slimy level of manipulative that easily gets her own way in every situation. The type that rarely gets called up but if you call them up everyone else around will take their side. The GOOD manipulators. Real piece of shit types. The type to push you so far into a corner you come out crazy. So crazy noone believes you and they all side with the charismatic one. (These people boil my soul into an angry black jus, I become one of the 4 biles). IIRC we don't even get a full line from her, I'm pretty sure she only says "teddy?" (But please correct me if that's false), but that's still enough to solidify her as a shithouse in my mind. Questioning his name like don't pretend you don't know or recognise him you shitcunt, he gave you so much of his life. Eat a dick.

As negative as all these experiences are, I do think they shaped teddy for the better! I mean, he is a lil anxious and awkward and doesn't have the best self-esteem/confidence. BUT, he's incredibly emotionally intelligent for an old white guy. He's SO full of love, for EVERYONE. Every single person he comes across or meets (as exampled by S12E4 Driving Big Dummy), he fundamentally enjoys experiencing. They're not just people to chat to, they are experiences to be had. They are characters you've never heard of to stories you've never read. His approach to people is polar opposite to how most of us perceive other people, most of us are like Bob, he doesn't /hate/ people, but he doesn't /like/ them either. Teddy DOES like other people, he REALLY likes other people, he put the work into his trauma so it didn't taint the rest of him. I'm not gonna speak on behalf of everyone with PTSD but I know for a lot of us we fester on our trauma and victimise ourselves, often resulting in self- alienation and isolation, teddy shows no sign of that. S8E5 Thanks-Hoarding picks up on teddy being a handyman so he can "fix" his parents relationship (simplifying), but it doesn't address the fact he is CONSTANTLY putting himself out there. Handymen are a word-of-mouth trade, to be a successful handyman you HAVE to put yourself out there. To meet new people is to be vulnerable, and to be vulnerable with PTSD is like a rabbit exposing its belly to an owl yknow? Throughout the entire show we see teddy consistently putting the work in. Into every part of his life, he's making the effort to improve his life. I know healthcare in the US is a privilege that only the capitalists can afford, but it is so refreshing to see an American go to therapy instead of just complaining about how much they need therapy lol (no judgment, again I appreciate it's a nigh impossible situation to escape).

ATLA: Every character in this show is sooo well written but probably Azula. She’d like to be loved. She needs to be feared. She has done so much in order to accomplish said fear and yet, when she does get it, she finds herself utterly alone.

Obviously from an outside perspective you can think “Well yeah, evil will drive people away” but this is all she knows !! This is all she’s ever done and it’s always worked, it always made her father validate her, it made her conquer cities.

She’s not even really able to comprehend why it all came crashing down, she is the culmination of years of manipulation and abuse and her own recreation of it. I want to look inside her brainnnn.

Gravity Falls: I absolutely love Dipper Pines and his overcomplicated plans and his pen-clicking. It’s so endearing how a much of a genuine nerd this kid is. (Also the sass 😭)

Honestly, I know a lot of ppl don’t like Mabel but I really like how they’re both so unapologetically themselves. I love her sweaters and her cute lil earrings and her PIG. They’re such charming main characters and I love how realistic their sibling relationship is.

Because damn, despite it all, she’s still doing what needs to be done.

She hates the things she has to do and she’s terrified of not hating it. And yet, her best friend doesn’t. Probably sees her as a coward for it. Probably because she’s scared of what that would mean for herself otherwise. I feel sooo much for her.

Here are some headcanons i have for some of my favorite fictional men.

Howl Pendragon

He really enjoys peaches even if they aren't native to Wales. He will have them imported for both himself and for any lady he has his eyes on.

He knows how to sing, however he doesn't believe he can equate his singing skills with his physical features so he doesn't focus on that

He is incredibly stingy with skincare routines. He invented skincare. I mean he takes care of every pimple, clears every pore, clears dead skin and makes his face smooth as a child

He is around 25 but as a child he was mistaken to be two years older and skipped two birthdays by accident.

He loves to read confusing poems and daydream about who they were written for, if written for anyone.

Touya Todoroki/Dabi

He hates all seafood not just fish. everything but scallops, which can be hard to get

he suffers from old man cramps™ in his knees and back, resulting in him debating to get a walker or mobility aid

hes too proud to admit when he is injured, and fell into the stigma that a, men dont cry and b, if men cry it means that they are weak and undeserving of praise.

He eats mostly with his canines. His front teeth are too sensitive for him to enjoy eating with again, so stabbing, tearing and ripping are done by his canines and molars.

He is actually very pleasant to be around when he isnt spewing about being a failed project of endeavor and wishing to hold the ashes of his father's eyeball or some gross body part

Natsuo Todoroki

He is a sweet guy, and helps with homework more often than not.

He prefers his older sibling Fuyumi over anyone else in the family, and sees her as a confidant, not just a sister or another person but a confidant.

He plays rugby in the summer and football and swim during the winter, on top of that maintaining a good GPA and family relations. Well maybe not good family relations.

He suffers from very poor anger management issues however he went to therapy after Touya's "death" and found ways to cope with it and heal better.

He can easily eat himself into a food coma after thousands of calories are simply swallowed like they're nothing.

He really enjoys when people call him toshinori because it measn they dont value him just for all might or his strength, but as a person

He visits memorials of people he feels he failed or has lost over the years and it gives him comfort that they arent in pain anymore. He looked for years to find the past users of One for All and he can spend hours at their graves to honor them

He cant cook. At all. When he was in america he learned how to grill a mean steak but besides that he cant cook much of anything and along with his stomach being well gone, he usually has smoothies and lighter foods.

He WILL go on tangents about america if you bring that up. He loves teaching his students (sometimes false) things about his experience in america. sometimes he switches over to english when hes recounting things he did and his students have to remind him they dont speak it as well as he does, nor do they know the old man slang he uses in his english

So I've been catching up on High Class Homos...

and was reminded of a particular plot point/character appearance choice that doesn't make the most sense to me, especially in the vaguely historical/fantasy setting of the story. (For context, I'm coming at this as someone who knows a lot about historical costuming, but by no means on a professional or even academic level, this is mostly just stuff I've absorbed over the years engaging with it as a hobby. I know that this series is not intended to be 100% historically accurate, and by no means take this as a serious critique of the work as a whole. I had just been texting my sibling about this yet again and realized I had a lot of thoughts about it)

So. The part that caught my attention was this

This is Odette. She works as a maid in the castle and we care about her cause she and a princess in said castle are a couple of Useless Lesbians™. But a part of her backstory is that she hasn't always been a maid, no, she used to live in fairly remote village where she foraged and communed with the animals and all that jazz. And when she was romping about the woods, she looked like this.

Long, flowing, luscious locks that apparently were never put up or braided? As someone with about this length hair, probably longer, I can tell you that you do not necessarily want it down and in your way, *especially* outside where it can act as a net to catch various leaves, twigs, branches, bugs, etc.

And apparently no one at the castle thought of braiding it either when she goes to work in the kitchen, because part of her backstory is that she *had to cut her hair* (this connection to her past life and all that, I can understand the metaphorical authorial intent) in order to work safely in the kitchen.

Now, this has been a thing in history. Working class people, often young girls, have had to crop their hair pretty short in order to do certain work and keep themselves safe, among other reasons. However, if it was for work, this work took place factories, right at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, in order to not have their hair caught in fast-moving, definitely not OSHA compliant machinery.

The general understanding I have of this world is it's pre-Industrial Revolution, with a touch of fantasy to have things such as magically assisted gender transitions (which I genuinely love). Obviously there's a lot of various anachronisms here that I'm willing to suspend my disbelief about! This, however, not so much. And I was trying to figure out why and as far as I can tell it's because it's so central to her character arc/backstory, and there's a lot of other explanations that could've led to the same result - she used to have long hair, and now she has short hair. (It could be a personal choice to indicate her change of environment, part of her overall character arc as she plays around with presentation and becoming more comfortable with her queerness, she prefers how it feels, there's a lot of options) But the implication that long hair would be so much of hindrance in pre-Industrial kitchen is not really a thing.

Long hair is not that much harder to take care of and keep clean and out of the way. If anything, I'd argue it's easier with the level of technology they are implied to have access to. It can be braided and pinned up and fully covered by a headscarf, brushed out every day to minimize tangles/dirt/grease, all of this keeping it clean without necessarily needing to wash it every day. (Access to running/clean water and enough of it to wash regularly was very much a luxury for a lot of history and I got the vibe it was here too?) And I know this both from various historical sources (people have had long hair in a lot of different jobs at a lot of different points in time), and from personal experience!

There's a lot more specific anachronisms I could get into, but this was the main one that stuck out to me. Overall I have a lot of fun reading the series, I'm also just a wee history nerd and I don't always know when that will completely take over.
