Lindsay Ellis plagiarized a ndn author

This post isn't a callout and it's only my own post because the OP source I just learned it from, @neechees, doesn't allow rbgs at a certain point on that post.

After Hmbomberguy's expose on Illuminaughtii and James Somerton some people are giving a well deserved eye back to the leftube sphere that was kind of schism-d and held under scrutiny in what I feel was, a lot of the time, misinformed hate campaigns in response to genuine criticism; especially towards Lindsay Ellis who up left after she was canceled and hasn't returned to continuous video making publicly even after people have mostly agreed the hatedom directed for her Raya and the Last Dragon takes was stupid and was erasing actual SEA people's discussions of the culture. To hear and see a decent breakdown of that film's representation problems BEYOND the Ellis-parts because it's worth your wild regardless of if you've seen the movie, please watch the three part video series hosted by Xiran Jay Zhao.

To tl;dr the 2021 drama: people have held an ire towards Ellis for a long time feeling like her and her white-woman base talk over, steal, or just straight up don't apologize for their own racism towards women and ppl of color, and after Lindsay did a problematic by pointing out that Raya and the Last Dragon was like ATLA, people jumped on her.

Being both a longtime fan of Ellis and white as fucc, I personally feel like Lindsay kind of forgave herself and threw out the actual criticisms held against her every bit as much as people just kind of treated her like a punching bag. Or, to paraphrase @padawan-historian's old takes from then, they treated Lindsay like she was trying to be the ENTIRE conversation, not the start of one, and like every possible outcome that could happen over her videos was her fault personally. Some of Lindsay's loudest and nastiest 'critics' were, in fact, other white people or just people who have no good faith in addressing her fuck ups, like Lily Orchard, fe.

One 'Lindsay did a racism'point tho that I felt wasn't truly addressed in full though were claims by indigenous people that she was anti-native, especially in her videos about Twilight and Pocahontas, which yeah at the time I was very passive of you can 100% find post abt that. But then Neechees linked me to an article I, and I think a lot of other video essay-fans had never seen before. This article accused Lindsay of stealing half of her talking points on Disney's Pocahontas from theirs.

When people on the breadtube spectrum talk of Lindsay, even people who criticized her at the time. all kind of agree that the intensity of the backlash was uncalled for and, while not everyone agrees if her public silence is a 'canceling' or not, agree with her need to just take care of herself these days. For those curious, this is the article making this claim:

I am not saying you need to all unfollow and hate everything Lindsay ever touched, mkay? But I also genuinely hope that Lindsay addresses this+comes clean because holy fuck. Unlike Somerton, all I can tell you is I don't just 'believe Windsey wouldn't hurt nobody uwu~'. I am pretty certain that Lindsay care about the topics she covers, for whatever that's worth to say as another whiteperson. It's just that, like Contrapoints, I ALSO think she has a tendency to deflect criticism within that sphere and lump all her negative bagage together. This really sucks cuz not all of us are Lily Orchards or Vaush clones.

Most of us are/were casual watchers of Lindsay like we are Hbomber, Contra, Lady Emily, Folding Ideas, and ToddintheShadows (does he count as leftube idk?) and we really, genuinely don't want to believe that Lindsay stole from + refuses to listen to women of color when they call her out.

Where I like almost everyone in the leftoob analyst sphere that's ever growing and hopefully now weeding out Illumanaughtii-s and Sommerton-s of the world, there ARE controversies within the space that I don't agree with creators on. Some are dumb things like the exact takes Lindsay has about movies n shows that I just up and disagree with her on, Princess Weekes' proshipping apologia that I have LOTS of thoughts on. However, some matters are clearly personal and about maters that just don't involve me. Earlier this year, Folding Ideas and Lady Emily ctrl+alt+deleted some replies they made to Quinton Reviews, making clear that they very much still dislike him based on something that happened between Quinton, Lindsay and I think SarahZ. And by "dislike", I mean also still believeing his former editor over him on who was boundary pushing about who in their relationship. On the offchance any of those creators or their stans somehow see this, know that I'm not going to tell any of you guys how to feel about whatever Quinton did in private I'm not aware of; it's just that I also happen to believe Quinton on this issue and I don't like the guiltybyassociation mantra.

Big introvert vibes ahead: the thing about any big social circle of better-spoken people than you is they ALL seem like a scary meangirl's table from outside looking in. The kind that'll send goons after you with passive-aggressive "this is slander against me and I have the right to be upset abt it sorry if the stans eat you alive". They can also be made out by their fans to be harmless internet nobody's who YOU are at fault for getting mad and staying mad at cuz it's not like it matters on the internet and are clearly just out for drama and 'twofaced' yourself. I think the reality is the same thing that drives every community forward as well as drives them apart: these people are legitimate friends. They stick up for each other the same way we stick up for our personal internet friends whenever there's shit coming their way. The breadtube circle, whoever that is at this point, clearly know some shit we don't about themselves as much as they don't know shit about us and our true intentions. One of them has a platform and responsibility, where the other has power in masses and following them or not. We gotta all make the choices best for us.

Anyway. I guess, if any of the stuff about Lindsay ripping off that writer IS true, I really hope that she admits and apologizes for it. That's not cool to do to her indigenous audience, or even me, one of her white fans who expects actually allyship.

Bakugo as a teacher Pro Hero

Dynamight x reader, cute son, dramatic ending and fluff. It was in my draft for so long, I finally got the will to end it. Enjoy!

Let's say Bakugo goes back to UA for teaching. He is the Pro-Hero, Dynamight symbol of Victory and Strength. Obviously, he is famous with the kids. He learned with the years, letting go most of his bagages that was slowing him down.

He was happy, striving in his work. He protected the world, making it a better place and in the same time he educated the next generation.

He had it all, the job, the glory, the money, little him would look at him with stars in his eyes (and probably some tears).

He was in the top so early in his age. So now, when he woke up he starred at the celling and he asked himself "What now?"

He ached for something more, he didn't know what. Obviously, there wqs always something to do to make the world better, but he felt like he reached a peak. He didn't like stagnation.

He talked about it with Deku, the green hairhead facing the same problem. And for one of the first time, the nerd didn't have an answer. "I let the life goes, it will bring us what we need when we are ready."

It made him sighed. Waiting. He didn't like how it sounds.

But what was there else to do?

For the first time Nezu gave him his own class. Twenty kids stared at him in awe and fear. He scanned the room with his eyes, he learned all the documents the school gave him on them. He saw the entrance exams, so he could say the bunch is promising.

"Take your shits, brats. We' gonna train outside."

Through the months, he learned more about his students. He cared for them and even gave them cooking class in their dorms. They were louds, he understood one hundred percent Aizawa and his dozing habits.

Some children standed out, one in particular.

The kid was strong, was a quick problem solver, very independent. He got some difficulties to lean on other, but his classmates were efficient in melting his thick carapace. He was silent most of the time, an only child, he went home every weekend.

"What's your parents do for a living, Keyring?"

"Chef," he responded without gazing up to his teacher.

Bakugo knew that, he read it on his case.

"And the other ?"

"Dead, hopefully."

His answer made him paused. And then, he was back frowning.

"Don't wish people death, you brat."

To which, the kid slowly raised his head with a mischievous grin. "I read Deku's biography, wanna talk about it sir?"

The kid definitely had some boldness. Bakugo liked him. He liked how independent and thoughtful he was. How smart but lay back.

Sometimes, the kid goes berserk, as if he was holding it for so long. His quirk, named Portals, capable to open portals to go anywhere, get out of control. It's rare. But it happened often enough that Bakugo decided to summoned you.

You were very open about the problems of your family, and Bakugo was thankful. Your ex, the other parent was a villain with the same quirk. You thought he was dead, but you received ominous messages. When you went to the police, they explained to you that they suspected he was still alive.

Your son knew, for his own safety that his genitor was strolling around, probably not for good. You had told him it was better he stayed at the dorms during the weekend. But he refused.

"What did the police put for your safety? And what is your quirk?"

"They put a gard in front of my restaurant and my house."

"Your son could get rid of both if he wanted with his quirk", he rolled his eyes but not at you. "What about your quirk?"

"I'm quirkless" you responded sheepishly.

This was a problem. In other terms you were defenseless.

He understood why your son was so adament about coming home every weekend. It was to protect you.

Bakugo thought. It was a special case. As a hero, he couldn't not do something.

He talked with Nezu and the director was very happy to side with Dynamight for your protection.

One weekend, he helped you to move inside the dorms, the teacher's dorm. Every morning, he took you to your restaurant, and take you back to the dorms at night. More heroes were called to watch over you during the day.

The car rides were silencious most of the time.

You didn't say anything in the car, you just looked at the window. Bakugo didn't thought much of it.

Until one day, you turned on the radio. An old song from Bakugo's teenagehood rang in the car. You sang along, to his surprised. He grinned. Your voice couldn't reach the low tones of the singer,making you grimacing while trying.

At first you shyly mouth the lyrics until the the chorus came and you couldn't help but shout. He laughs.

And then it was over. Because he asked you about the music, then the band and you exchanged your opinions.

You talked about work, family, music, TV shows...

The car rides each morning and night were going much faster, it became something Bakugo look out for. He didn't get why at first. He liked listening to you. You were smart, you had wits, and he understood from who your son got his sly smile.

The said son came back to normal, he was so happy and relieved that you stayed at the dorms. Where the best heroes could protect you.

Bakugo could see that you both had strong boundaries. You let your son be in the dorms, just texting him during the week. And you hangout together during the weekend.

When Bakugo asked you about it, you said that the dorms were your son's space. You didn't want to intrude, he was very independent. You wanted your son to be more opened about needing help and asking for it.

A friendship begun between you and the hero. During the week, you hang out together, not only for car rides. Then you cook for each other, discovering he is good with cooking but terrible at baking.

Of course, the friendship didn't go unnoticed.

Firstly by his friends.

Sero, surprisedly, was sure the two of you were banging. Kaminari said it was not Baku go-like to flirt with a parent's student. Kirishima saw how Bakugo would drop the eyes when Kaminari said that. His best friend was feeling something, but he wasn't sure he was aware of it. Bakugo denied everything. Just saying you were fun. The word felt like sour cake in his mouth.

Then the media would notice his comings and goings to your restaurant.

Bakugo never cared much about scandals. But with you, he begun to feel scared. About what you thought, how you saw him, and ultimately, what you son thought about it.

You didn't act different so he did the same. You brushed off the media, minding your own business. He didn't know if he felt relieved or irked.

Dynamight never had a scandal with a woman. There was never a suspicion he had ever dated anyone. Because he had not. And he didn't get why you didn't understand it meant something. That it meant something to him at least.

He was on the phone with his mother who was screaming in his ears about you, when you son came to see him.

His phone was on a website. A journalist insulted you in the papers. They made the link between his name and yours, knowing you were his parent and Dynamight was his teacher.

"Are you dating my mom?" the kid said, interrupting Bakugo's conversation.

"What? No, Keyring. I'm not, don't believe what those stupid journalists said."

"Then why are you doing all of this?"

The kid was torn. Bakugo could see it with the shaking hands and the ruffled hairs.

"She didn't get the star she was aiming because of it, you put her at risk with the papers talking about you two! My father must have saw it!"

No, the kid was not torn. He was scared.

"It's none of my business what happened between you. But if she is hurt I won't forgive you. And if her restaurant is mocked because of you, it better be because you make her happy and you're not toying with her!"

Bakugo was speechless. His mother too by the silence in his phone. But she didn't hang up.

"I'm not toying with your mother, brat."

"Then what do you want? If your honest you won't say nothing."

Again, he doesn't know what to say. What did he want with you? Whatever you were okay to give him? He likes the car rides, the hanging out in the dorms, the jokes, the smiles...

But now, he's forced to acknowledge what it could be. You coming to his dorm. Him caressing your tight while driving. Little dates on his day off with the Keyring. A family...

He opened his mouth to confess his feeling. If the kid wanted the truth, he will give it to him.

But before he could speak, the door opened. Another teacher came right in and said "The restaurant was targeted! They kidnapped Y/N!"

Bakugo paled. His heart echoed against his eardrums. He look at your kid who dropped his phone. In his gut, Bakugo could feel the silent scream the child wanted to let out.

if Osha were to see Yord shirtless (i mean now, i dont think this was authorized in the Jedi training room eh) she totally would be sipping a drink, sitting in a corner of a room, watching him practice with his lightsaber, him totally concentrated - until he realizes she's watching him and then he has a hard time - no pun intended really - doing anything, hes too self aware, he wonders if she admires him, if she thinks he is a good knight, if his fighting - defence move/manoeuvers/stance are good enough compared to her when she was a Padawan (yeah, i have a lot of other thoughts on that too, hes not insecure per se , but he totally have this 'obsession' he should be 'better' in a way, match the potential she didnt get and want to reach when she quits the Order maybe??...)

and Osha, while not oblivious, (she likes flustering him) doesnt fully get the effect she has on Yord, and continue to fix him with a teasing smile and a happy smile - and all of sudden she's reminiscing their time together, when she was training with him, meditating, laughing, and learning.... - and so she doesnt smile anymore.

because while she made that choice herself and for herself (i totally recon this to ep 3 when Sol and Mother Aniseya both say that to her yes) she's not happy, not exactly..bc what she used to have, the time she had with her family on her homeworld and after, with the Jedi, Master Sol and Yord and the others, it was maybe not perfect, not the happiest she's ever been surely - she didnt want to be a witch and then the trauma bagage - , but it was hers, something close to her heart, and by the Force...she misses it. the closness, the love and the attachment, the fights with her twin ...and grief hit her with full force (no pun intended, again) unexpected...

Those are the ones that actively takes up more brain space, and ones which I most rotate around my head. Here’s some general dynamics I like exploring:

North Star (Cold/Oppy): their toxic yaoi wouldn’t last a year and be horrible for the both of them (mainly Oppy), and I’m all here for it.

Smitten and Skeptic, while not in OTBesties tier for me, is also a friendship I’m very fond of. I think they’d have coffee in the morning together.

Nightmare’s possible dynamic with anyone would be so interesting to explore, but especially with Tower– just. imagine the chaos

Speaking of– also Tower’s dynamic with Razor. Put her in the same room with some of the most relentless and violent vessels, I wanna see what happens

Wraith and Cheated would be an interesting dynamic when taken out from their chapter’s context tbh– Wraith is resentful because of how she’s been treated and only resorted to those drastic actions because that’s what you left her with. I think Cheated would sympathize with that and realize the hand he played (if you get him in her chapter) to get her like this.

Oppy and Hunted feel like they’d have a weirdly close and strong bond. Not OTBesties or explicitly romantic, but a secret fourth thing

Oppy and Contra have beef at first sight to me. They either completely ignore each other, or swear to make the other day’s worse, whatever they feel like atm

Also– since me and the folks in the discord started headcanon that while alive, Narrator could’ve been groomed by a cult and that’s why he has such a deep fear of death, and think eternal bliss is the best alternative for that– I’d like to see more of his dynamic with Broken. In a what-if scenario where they both got over enough of their bagage to have an actual conversation together, I think they’d have a lot to talk about.

Also, shout-out to my Happily Single Tokens, aka, characters I hc as non-partnering/not interested in romance/‘just not in the mood for it, dude’:

I see people using Zuko as an example of a redemption arc beautifully done every other morning and while I do agree with that I don't see a lot of people touching what is really interesting for me about it : The progression of his character is different from the progression of his acts

Like Zuko's character act is very much not linear. He learns, he make mistakes, he goes back to his old ways when he is offered his initial goal, honor and redemption, his path is like climbing a hill, rolling down the path on the other side and climbing a second hill again this time successfully

But when he does go back to the fire nation he's already a changed man and that is not a turn back in any way. What he saw in the Earth Kingdom is still there. What Aang told him about being friends in another life is still there. He's not the thirteen year-old that left obsessed with chasing the Avatar, or even the sixteen year-old with the same, three-year-old obsession. And he's aware of that.

Even though he returned back to his old ways and did so against everyone's advice, causing a bump in his arc, his character progressed linearly. He needed that comeback at his old home to realise it was anything but the safe place he remembered. The troubled teen that left didn't come back, a man did. And he didn't fit.

Hos relationship to Maï didn't fit, and the awkwardness is probably due to Zuko having a whole new bagage and seeing his childhood crush grow up without him : The fact that they do come back together at the end of the show is a proof that this time, they entered the relationship not as the teens that remembered what the other was like, but as adults that are aware of who the other is. His relationship to Azula didn't fit, even though still with the same tension ; it is less build on sibling rivalry and more on the awareness of both of their abuse (the beach scene is probably a catalyst for Zuko's pained expression at the end of their final battle. Like he knows she's as broken as he is, in different ways). His relationship to his father didn't fit as it is not one of admiration, but one of distrust and fear.

Even his relationship to his uncle didn't fit. Because now Iroh is a traitor and he's a prince and they created a rift from the core of their very values.

And realizing that he didn't fit the old life he came back to is exactly what prompted him to follow his own path.

Zuko did not just go backwards just to find his own redemption. Zuko went back to an old environment with knowledge of the outside world, relationships and doubts and realised he already grew past his childhood and dreams and had to find new ones, ones that align more with the views he gained and upheld. And he needed to see that his home was not what he remembered to realise that.

The acts seem to make him go backward, but the character himself evolved in a very forward way, looking back only to see how much he changed.

FSR rambles...THE FIFTH ONE???

It dawned on me while I work on the 2nd flashback comic in a row I could talk about the scene between Blue and Green. I will probably have less interesting/insightful things to say about this chapter since it was mostly "Aftercare" for all the BS I put yall through with the Link chapter. X'D

I actually EXTENDED this scene from it's OG length not sure how obvious that is though. We all needed to heal. UwU Mostly me actually lmfao. I write obnoxiously fluffy shit after dark shit to make me feel better. X'D

IS IT TONAL WIPLASH!? MAYBE!? DO I CARE???? NOOOOOOO.

Jumping into this page after the last one it gives the impression Blue talking yanked Green out of his thoughts about Link/the past few days leading up to Link pulling the sword.

Twice now someone has warded off Dark Link just by talking to the person he's affecting. Previous being Shadow not so elegantly yelling at Vio till he woke the hell up but he was way deeper in in than Green is here.

Onto the more pressing matter of this page though:

Green feels responsible for taking care of everyone and was worried about what Vio was going to go do once he left the house: Note, we SAW what Shadow and Vio were up too but Green has NO CLUE. If he knew I feel like he'd be more concerned about the freakin' panic attack oof.

Vio just said he was going for a walk and hasn't come back for presumably hours. Right after the split too and with someone who is DUBIOUS at best. The situation kinda just sucks.

Blue gets annoyed with Green's stubbornness offering to take his place in waiting for Vio. The millionth sign he cares about Vio a lot despite his previous ranting.

Dude just decides to concedes to sitting with Green cause it's easier than trying to get him to sleep. Despite him OBVIOUSLY needing it.

Fair question to ask all things considered...

Not much to say story wise but art wise Blue is very cute and his super long side burns are one of my favorite things about him outside of his huge eyebrows. Yall will know weird eyebrows are a thing I enjoy drawing if you've seen my art for a long time. XD

That hug went on a little too long lmao. Blue's kind of shy about physical affection and I think that's cute.

Blue doesn't wanna be Link, like at all. He must have also caught Vio staring at the sword's pedestal because he knows Vio had thoughts about placing it earlier and knew Green had paranoia about Vio putting the sword back while on the "Walk"

Green says the gayest thing he possibly could prompting one of my favorite lines from Blue in this entire comic "Why am I the only normal one???" He's projecting his own insecurities about being "weird" onto the Vio and Green.

He really wanted the split to be the key to solving all their/Link's problems. Unlucky for him it just makes 4 times more issues oop.

Blue ain't an idiot. He can tell Green's not doing too well. UNLIKE VIO GREEN'S ACTUALLY HONEST RIGHT OFF THE BAT WITH HIS PROBLEMS/FEARS.

Blue decides he wants to be the 2nd most level headed character in this comic outside of Shadow Link.

Blue's a true bud.

Blue how dare you capture Green's heart. X'D Vio and Green are both desperate for comfort. I find Green and Vio were the ones affected by Link's depression the most.

Vio harbors a LOT of regret and anxiety. Green feels overwhelming pressure to do what Link did before the split while being "Diet Link".

Vio's less good at dealing with and communicating emotions are hard for the purple boy. Green doesn't have this problem and is with someone who gets what he's going through right away while Shadow wasn't sure WHAT was the problem when Vio started to break down.

Green never gets to that point at least not here.

Green and Blue also don't have the utter BAGAGE Vio and Shadow do lmao so that probably helps.

Green and Vio got baggage together that will be unpacked later. ;)

Lol Green's confession is cute. Blue's a lot less comfortable saying stuff quite like that. Red's the MOST comfortable saying that kind of thing so maybe this scene is OOC but Green's insanely difficult to characterize so I'm doing whatever I want with him. X'D

Blue hasn't been slick at all about his feelings towards Vio let's be real and Green calls him out.

Shadow Link pisses Blue off and I'm so giddy to show off more of WHY that is. (It's deeper than he's jealous which you can probably figure from his dialogue.)

Also just goes to show Link himself still harbored tough feelings around Shadow Link deeper than Vio's emotional baggage.

While Vio was in denial he was still alive despite the obvious fact he was there the whole time and the notion they could ever meet again, even HOPING they wouldn't, he still showed fondness towards Shadow and was happy to be around him.

Blue actively doesn't like Shadow and has been vocal about that fact. If Blue calling him a "Bitch" and a "Bastard" didn't make that clear enough.

Green you'll notice only at first mentions wanting Vio to come back but switches to mentioning them both in the next page. He also was the one who clarified Shadow was welcome to stay with them and was apart of their team. Showing a sort of neutral leaning on positive tone to Shadow's existence.

Red's relationship with Shadow is nonexistent at this point but will be explored later so I can't speak on it as of rn. Red hasn't had much of a role but I will point out I did like drawing him in the BG of these pages. XD He's still around just sleepy.

Blue's ability to sense danger is such an interesting thing about him. Like, that's so useful I wish we got to see it more in the manga.

I appreciated Blue way more as a character after drawing these pages and it made me change how I wrote him in certain scenes in the script X'D

I want him to have just as much depth as Vio and Shadow, because while Vidow had a strong focus at the START the whole of the comic leans on: A sequel to FSA vibe.

We're left on a cliff hanger for what the hell Blue's afraid of...Vaati perhaps?

We'll see.

my oc Lunaria, who is Leigh's bio parent, is based on both the Evil Mother and the Delilah Archetype, or rather my desire to deconstruct them. I think the way female characters are treated and held to different standards than male characters is a fascinating thing to explore and challenge as a tangible in universe thing, yk?

Lunaria was judged and treated much harsher for the affair and resulting pregnacy than Cathal(leigh's father) as well as her her refusal to step up and raise the twins(something Cathal also failed to do).

All the nuance of her identity and personhood were scrubbed away by the society she existed in, replaced with the label of a seductress refusing to take responsibility for her actions. Nobody questions this narrative because Lunaria isn't that widely liked. It's easy to label her as the clean-cut villain of this story, and more importantly, it's easy for Leigh to do so.

I love a good biased narrator, so having leigh be raised with this perception of Lunaria on top of the personal bagage she has with her parent is very fun for me! like, yes girl, go be wrong about something!!

Leigh is justified with her hurt of having an adult authority figure in her life leave her to the wolves, but was it ever Lunaria's responsibility to intervene? is Leigh being fair by only taking in one side of the story? is it Leigh's responsibility to be fair about this in the first place? idk it's interestingggggg

so basicaly here is all of the most fleshed out dynamics:

Ida/Jack: They both think each other are hot but also Ida keeps trying to know everything and push for knowledge even when it puts everyone at risk, which causes conflict between her and Jack, who always ends up being the one who pays the price for her impulsive decisions. Jack tends to be the only one who challenges Ida on her plans. If Idas fatal flaw is her hunger for knowledge leading her to dangerous extremes, Jacks fatal flaw is his need to protect those around him leading him being overly cautious, to the point of missing opportunities just for the sake of keeping everyone safe.

Jack/Blake: they both like each other but also are so have so much emotional bagage and self hatred that things tend not to go well

Amelia/Jane: they both like each other and act as each others main confidant, but Jane cant tell her about The Reflection, and Amelia knows something is wrong and that Jane is hiding something but dosent bring herself to ask.

Ida/The Mask: both act as the smartest hero and villain respectively, and are constantly attempting to trick and outsmart the other.

The Mask/Booker: lots of puppet/puppeteer imagery with these two. Booker is someone who views herself as important and powerful, and cant come to terms with the fact that she is basicaly just a pawn being used by a higher power.

The Beast/The Mask: these two absolutely despise each other as they both are exact opposites, with the Beast being a god of strength and the Mask being a god of the mind

The Beast/Mayor Kang: basicaly just toxic immortal old man yaoi between an immortal wizard and a god who has decided that hes fun enough to not kill.

The Reflection/Jane: literaly just the worst relationship physicaly possible. i would elaborate but i need to leave for school now but just know that i have made several full posts about these two alone because there are so many layers to their relationship

Been a looong while but I'm back with a new episode commentary. 1x09 here we go!

The instant recall to finale of spn s 1 is just as delicious and jarring this time around. Find it very very interesting that it's the vampires that mimic the Winchesters here and do so in order to learn their fate and fulfil it. I'd definitely call this a dark mirror to begin with.

I also adore these vamps, they're sooo fun looking.

John and Mary really came out of that near death experience losing no time in getting together.

The appreciation of Dean being paralleled to the appreciation of Baby is just... sooo funny considering the sheer amount of connections there.

Soo Kyle is instantly suspish here. Not even hiding it, damn. You can tell the shift in personality just based off his demeanor. I also think the little hand gesture he does as he walk away is interesting, it's almost like he's saying "im washing my hands off this bullshit". It subble enough that you could think it's jealousy.

The little hints at Lata and John friendship! My beloved!. Also Lata is suuuch a gossip I love her!

I once more am asking John Winchester to stop trying to be subtle, it aint his strong suit. But alternatively, I sorta get it? Like I can understand why it would be confusing if u don't get where Mary is coming from, since she has no problem letting strangers (and exs) on the street see them together, but not their close friends? But I also completely get Mary as well, she's actually lived as a hunter her whole life which means bagage already, then the fact that their relationship is new and fragile. Plus both her parents and his haven't had the easiest time with relationships. Cautious makes sense.

Ah yes, "fate is what u make it". Dean hearing it from John who heard it from Millie. All of them have their very personal reasons for that saying to apply, but also... Dean saying he didn't expect where things got when he "pushed that first domino" reminds me of Cas and him talking after the 1st Apocalypse that wasn't and about how free will sometimes means things aren't really gonna go the way you like them.to or expect them to (peace or freedom?). It's sorta funny then (read:ironic) that in both John's life (SPN!John) and Dean and Cas after Swan Song the outcome was actually quite tragic over all, John's life literally going out in flames with the rest of it being a living nightmare and in Dean and Cas' case Sam is dead and Heaven is starting a Civil War. This episode then does something really nice in subverting that expectation by setting up the tragedy (John is to die, can't change that) and allowing him to survive and not just that but ending it with him getting exactly what he'd wanted here in the beginning of the episode, getting to freely be with Mary.

I adore how Carlos calms down the driver, showing once again the full range of their skill as hunter and empathy as person. Love them so so much!

Couldn't get a hold of John, says Mary, being more suspicious then if she and John had shown up together... I find that hilarious!

Also also, love that this clarified that fangs are still teeth aka u can identify people (vampires here) based on them. I love love love that!

John dying by vamps begins my headache of the night because it is 1000% a callback to Dean's death in 15x20. And I wish that wasnt the case.

Ok let's talk Ursitoare (Uhr- see-too-ah-reh) a sec. So this is Romanian myth. To give an overview of it, the myth largely relates to the Ursitoare (or Fates you could say) blessing or cursing a new born after they've been born. Usually the legend states that the mother or midwife would have to leave out gifts (generally food like bread or water or salt etc) to basically appease them and make sure the baby gets a good destiny foretold. It's also states that those who eavesdrop on them as they tell the childs destiny shall die. They are also said to be quick to anger if spurned. Another interesting think tho about the myth is that (while there can sometimes be 7 or 9) the 3 ursitoare are generally known as Ursitoarea, Soarta si Moartea (aka the One who Wishes your fortune, Fate and Death) again the Greak Fates work very well and there's def overlap between the myths here. But importantly, Ursitoarea is the oldest and Death the Youngest (or othewise simply stated as the 3rd).

Now based on this we have a few things to keep in mind, mainly our vampires. They esentially eavesdrop on John's fate here and get exactly what the legend states - killed. In other news, the Ursitoare are very much neutral beings generally. They can be plied with offerings sure, but overall they just spin the thread as it goes. Its only ever an active role when wishing the newborns destiny. Now John's our newborn here, new to hunting at least, reborn once already after the war and a second time after confrunting everything he has since hunting became his life. More importantly, in some versions of the myth, the ursitoare give either the mother or the midwife dreams the night after the baby is born that need to be carefully interpreted afterwards - exactly what the Gem does here.

To wrap this part up a bit, I am.endlessly happy about the way they tackled this myth. SPN had sadly a bad bad record with Romanian mythology and lore - 1st with the witches in s7 which I'd argue was ... 'inspired' by rromani mythology rather than Romanian which is its own culture and as such its own racist connotation to that whole mess. And 2nd with the Imaginary Friends in s 11 aka Zanna .... which has absolutely nothing to do with Romanian mythology beyond slapping a horrendous mispronunciation of Zână onto a piece of lore that doesnt exist in Romanian mythos - we don't have any imaginary friend stuff, its literally all imported from the US. So this lore here? This is fucking aces! It actually makes sense, is actually a Romanian myth that is still being invoked nowadays - especially in the countryside as tradition of baptising/birth and it works very well in the context of the episode. Now, it would've been perfect if they didnt add that shh sound in Ursitoare making ir Urshitoare... Like its funny a bit cuz I constantly think of bears (urşi - ursh is plural for bear in Romanian) but its ok since its just that. I can live with a minor mispronunciation. I will say the Gem itself is fully made up tho for TW.

To answer Carlos tho, the Ursitoare themselves tell u 2 things: the future and also a future they are willing to bless or curse you with. It's essentially both. They show u the future, ur life as it's meant to be exactly, no deviation, but only in pieces or really a piece as a dream and, importantly the sorta end result of ur life which they wish upon u as newborn. How u get to that wish is up to you. The Gem.appears to have merged these two.

I also love love love the show of community that hunters have, that a hunters network is important to getting the job done. It makes me strangle SPN!John worse because he actively isolated himself aaand his kids. Ffs!

Millie does a good job here I think. She's not dismissive of Bettys concerns, but shes also careful to dispel them if possible. She shows once more how good she is at manipulating people, tho admitedly this time it isnt anything malicious or even generally negative.

I also gotta say that Betty (and id say John by extension) is very naive to think that war could in any way shape or form help with the issues John had had. Like he had trauma from his fathers abandonment and his mothers general treatment afterwards, had trauma from the disfunctional relationship the two had before Henry died/left, which all was underscored by deep-seated guilt that he let out as rage. Like all war would do is make it far far worse. It shows just how young Betty is truly and how she really hasn't lived through too much yet. And i said John too because Im fairly sure he also thought going to war would help in a similar manner.

I also headcanon that Betty was very inspired by Millie... but thats just me.

Carlos continues to be a dumb dumb about Anton... unsurprising, but omg.

I forgot the stone was carved from the Ursitoare's ribs... is it just me who though of the birth of Eve here??? Also yes, Il Soarta is def Italian I realize now. Do i question why an Italian cult was obsessed with Romanian myth.. absolutely not.

Im think that the 'most times not'part of what destiny the Gem shows u is due to essentially the stone acting as ... well... an eavesdropper. Literally. It was given to specific people to use by the Ursitoare as recompense for their worship - so good fate; but then as time went on it became a useful artifact for the benefit of Il Soarta so it became a way to eavesdrop on destiny so said destiny changed in them because that worship became.in name only. As mentioned, the Ursitoare arent patient and dont take well to being spurned or used in this case.

God the drip on the vamps, love them so much!

I would also argue that fate ultimately doesn't care about anyone if the whole universe is in jeopardy and uve a bigger destiny like John Winchester does.

I agree with Mary calling Millie here. Especially since she actually.knows what it's like to just ... lose someone like that. John does too, but he's also the one in the middle of it.

Ironic that Mary says "even if i have to kill every vampire in the tri-state area " ... a version of her actually does do that... for her kids. And simultaneously, its ironic also that another version of John will tell their kids that vampires are extinct (which could get them killed fyi).

Millie and Dean would be horrible together... all theyd do is work in the garage and shittalk research... and I kind love that for them.

I also like that Millie does in fact tell John bout Betty and also basically tells him.to not bullshit a bullshitter. This convo between Millie and John might be the 1st truly empathetic one we've had for them. Like yes, John's defenses go up instantly and he immediately assumes that Millie agrees with Betty and is judging him, but Millie, this time, doesnt do that. She just wants to check-in on how he's doing. And does so softly. And believes him more importantly.

And of course, back to the tried and true Winchester feelings avoidance after we've just had a helluva emotionally vulnerable talk.

I live for Carlos being disappointed in the vamps housing choices. I too would judge that. (So would Dean tbh)

Aaaaand Carlos once more gives us the biggest puzzle piece to where the vamps are.

While Lata is once more absolutely delighted by the magic lockpick like the wonderful nerd she is.

I will say time and distance made this episode easier to watch for me. 15x20 had fucked me up before and made it very hard to watch without refering back to it. It has several parallels to Dean and dying specifically. The main one ofc being death adjacent to vampires. But it also has John killing himself for the sake of the hunt which sadly doesn't bode well either because it reminds me of a really bad couple of weeks back in 2017 when i had the realization that Dean has literally been shown as suicidal every single season (and i can name the ep, its so clear) and then Advanced Thanatology hit the Tv screens on nov 9th 2017... not a fun realization and def not a fun series of events afterwards. Sorry to bring this up here, but well... its relevant sadly.

Thankfully tho, this episode works well to deconstruct that and to subvert the spn finale by allowing John to live and to fully embrace his realtionship with Mary.

In other news, next ep will anger me a bit... for.multiple reason, some having already been discussed by people better equiped to talk about it then me. But rest assured, ive shit to say outside of that too, so see y'all for ep 10. Im aiming to have that up by the end of the week.

May I say i thought the setting of their big talk was so fitting? Both stripped of clothing the way they are stripping themselves of a lot of their past bagage, and Santiago having just come out of the water as if cleansed from some of his earlier self-hating beliefs, at least a little?? I thought it was all very beautiful and meaningful and wistfully sweet!!

I LOVE THIS INTERPRETATION OF THE IMAGERY / SYMBOLISM, THANK YOU! 🥹🧡😭 Like, honestly, so floored that you would not only give this series your time in reading it, but that you’d read and consider this so deeply and thoughtfully and look into what I was hoping to convey between the lines, you know?? That means the WORLD to me! And it’s so useful to hear what comes through.

I do think it had to happen OUTSIDE, for one thing. I think that was fitting for them. There’s a lot about outdoor / indoor stuff in this story that maybe isn’t super apparent but it has definitely been a thought process in my head in terms of what moments happen where and also how that might help us frame and observe any shifts or conflicts as things progress. (But then again I do like metaphors so there are a few and probably too many symbolic threads woven through the entirety of this LOL🤣.)

I read Dark Web, the 2023 Marvel comics crossover.

The plot: Two clones, Madeline Pryor (Jean Grey's) and Ben Reilly (Peter Parker's) join forces to wreak havoc, and suddenly, New York's usually inanimated objects suddenly start talking and biting everyone they see!

Overall, I really enjoyed it, but I'll give my thoughts on each series in it.

The X-Men issues are excellent, be it the plot or the art. I'm very tempted to read more of their adventures! I'm very thankful to have listened to Jay & Miles X-plain the X-Men, even for not so many episodes, because it definitely helped! Aside from the touching storyline between Jean and Madeline, there's also the matter of Cyclops and Havok both being detained. Cyclops hilariously can't open his eyes or the extremely adorable puppies dangling in front of his face will burn. What a cute predicament. I loved looking at the puppies! Meanwhile, Havok has an extremely sexy outfit that, I suppose, is damaged, but it really hides... not much of his body.

Is this his usual garment?! It seems so. I'm here for it, but also, what the heck. Not gonna complain though.

A prominent member of the cast is also Forge, my husband who's just as dashing as what I'd imagined. So overall, really loved those issues.

The Miss Marvel issues were also great. I don't really care about her powers, but what listen I've seen of her cast is really enjoyable. The objects are the most prominent in her story and are enjoyable conversation partners. We also get a nice Miles Morales cameo who helps the Muslim community in a big (literally) way.

The Mary Jane & Black Cat issues are also extremely enjoyable. MJ has her Jackpot powers, and they really work well as a duo. Aside from the delightful lesbian vibes, they're just great as friends (and previous romantic rivals). The art is great, the plot is fun and full of surprises. I loved their relationship with the purple demon where they all made it clear there would be a betrayal coming up, and were chill with that. And look, two women looking badass while fighting together? I'm easy to please, folks.

Spider-Man's issues are alright. Spidey's conflict with Chasm reaches hilarious proportions (be it Chasm's stupid plan to make Peter eat an apple, or Rek-Rap's whole character that I expected to hate and instead found intensely delightful), but the ending is quite sad. I did enjoy seeing Ben and his girlfriend, whom I'd never heard of before. Hallow's Eve has a sick costume design. Chasm also has a great suit, that's what made me aware of the event in the first place! I wish he had a good ending too, however. I'm curious about the aftermath...

The art was extremely good overall for these issues.

Now, for issues I enjoyed less...

Gold Goblin was a surprising, but not uninteresting delve into Norman's psyche around questionable plot points. In concept, it's not so bad, and here too, the art is impressive, but somehow those issues ended up being... boring.

But it's nothing compared to Venom. I'm not attached to those symbiotes, but this really didn't help either. I didn't really care about that plotline, it felt messy and boring.

So overall, Dark Web was quite enjoyable. It made me want to read more of some characters, thirst on many men, and turn a lot of pages. Definitely not a beginner's comic storyline because there's a lot of bagage involved.

I don't wanna know for semantic reasons, but Ahsoka seems like a prime figure to explore the jedi of new and old since she is one of the only characters to have lived through both Yoda's and Luke's Jedi Orders. And she has so much juicy bagage to boot, it would feel like a waste if they didnt explore this

Oh boy, at a point I noticed that so many shipping wanks in fandoms just use the same circle of ad verbatim arguments just with a different coat of paint. And for the sake of enjoying my fandom experience I prefer to stay out of such discussions as good and often as possible.

BUT...

One development I don't get is the need of canonisation of shipping. I mean sure, who of us hadn't thought that a certain relationship would have improved/made more sense for a story, especially a character arc? Sometimes bittersweetness, unused potential, or unfullfilled longing makes sense for the plot, sometimes the author is an idiot (the eternal pain of enduring shounen manga endings written by men...). However... that is what fandom's for: The possibility of transformative versions, exploring ideas canon had space for, never intended, going silly, having fun. I would love to see my blorbos smooch each other but in the end that's free time enjoyment, nothing that I need to harass a creator/creative team over.

Whereas I do think that well written stories developing relationships that stray away from the standart het couple* can speak to people, and put a foot in the door for more stories being told by creators outside the standart Hollywood demographic, they are going to be usually not as popular in fandoms themselves. The reasons can be varied although my take would be it would be the invisible undercurrents of general dismissal of female characters, especially PoC female characters, a disinterest to engage outside of big IPs in first place. That's not me policing what kind of shipping would be the "🙏moral thing actually(TM)✨", fandom is for personal interest or fun in the first place. What I do find questionable is how the way that the language of social justice activism is coopted to argue why one's blorbos should smooch each other is beyond personal gratification actually also will singlehandedly be a deciding step in [add human right's movement of your choice here], adds another layer of annoying shipping culture. Certainly, it is mean how even acknowledgement of minorities has to compete against other demographic acknowledgement which also only has a chance to tolerated, and not even of large scale, in the accessible mainstream media. Still, I don't find it weird how, by example, the mere shipping (not even canon) of an interracial couple gets dismissed by other shipping groups as "no, the character is ✨gay✨, hun, no girls allowed".

I would maybe less irked by all that if so much shipping culture recently wouldn't push for "canonisation". having one ship next to the other or liking both ships could be a perfectly fine thing within fandom but the claim that one kind of ship would be better than the other in canon, without the consideration what cultural bagage comes with dismissing some kinds of relationships).

[*I mean two able bodied, cis, beauty standart guy and gal. Next to queer relationships (not excluding any intersection either),there's so much potential in talking about cross cultural relationships, dealing with disabilities or beauty standarts, or love in old age, generally love outside the model that "romance" occurs in fast food media only when the protagonist dude meets a conventionally attractive girl and they're obligated to fall for each other based on hormones boiling alone.]

In ill thoughts, I suspect that the wish for caonisation is only partly based of the distortion of fandom as activism space. (I mean when you spend all your life time on the web in fandom instead of going out creating or commissioning others to create the progressive work you want to see - or, very subversive, actually do activism and community support work yourself.)

Another the other reason I ill-mindedly speculate on is overindulgent wishfullfillment in two forms: A) A favourite blorbo gets so much projected on, they become a distorted fanon character yet have nothing to do with canon themes. Say when a blorbo becomes one's personal idol. Eg, like YA romance protagonists who're so suitable for reader inserts that one could easily think they themselves were the pretty sad girl with a hot love interest. The same can be observed in fandom where blorbos undergo the same doll-fication in a more personalized edition. Then character X isn't their canon self anymore, aggressive factions of fandom claim that X absolutely has to get together with the blorbo love interest - no matter the rest of the plot. (I wish the shipping wars during GoT season 8 were my only example but oh boy...!)

Speaking of the rest of the plot... I really dislike how overtaking shipping has become in fandom spaces. Certainly, makes more sense in romance centered fandoms but in in non-romance centered fandoms, it really bugs me how during the duration of shipping wars (and for all the flimsy excuses fandoms uses in the points above) it's impossible to talk about anything else, and how distorted fandom views can get about a certain kind of ship. Maybe, two blorbos smooching is not that world shattering as it personally feels.

(Yes, this is a reminder to myself by times when fandom gets too stupid. A reality check helps by times that people getting heated about two dimensional events is still leisure time whereas financial ends and deadlines need to be met, and honestly if something bugs me, the block function of users and/or tags is a great thing. I have like a lot of brainrot of Arthur Shelby but I have to start thinking about my final project so I'll just write it down before I forget and it gets buried in my research documents :

as fun as having them get all romantic and have a traditional happy ending would be, it's a bit unfitting. However happy ending of becoming life long friends platonically and finding partners elsewhere if they need them might work. it would be kind of weird to cercumvent several cases of story prophecy only to then succumb to the "and then they fell in love and had several children together as a married couple" thing. Still very much gay and happy together, just not gay for eachother. it avoids the potential bagage of unhealthy "trauma bonding" or savior dynamics.

I dont remember when I was so excited for your next update as I am now after new MM chapter! You are suprasing me everytime I read something from you. To be honest when i saw that there will be 3 part of secret song series I was thrilled, but I didnt know what to expect. I thought that this story is coming smoothly to happy end without unresolved issues. BUT BOY I HAVE BEEN SO WRONG. Just now Im seeing how many problems and bagage they have.

Hehehe it would have been so nice to end it happy and fluffy BUT I just couldn't do it, because the truth is that Jungkook and Sasha are both very young in their own ways, even for their ages, and this is a story about them growing individually and as a couple. We've got so much to work through, in addition to just the fun of following Jungkook's career/BTS 😊 But that is why I tell people that it's ok to end after book 1 and it's just a happy little getting together story! The whole series arch IS ALSO happy but growing up is hard! Especially with the insane lives they both have. We gotta get our hands dirty to let them truly reach a place where they are happy, healthy, and stable
