love and deepspace: what is it and is it worth getting? i keep seeing people post about it and I'm a little curious

part of me wants to tell you to run, but the other parts of me want you to experience the joy so ill give you a little pros and cons list — THIS IS REALLY LONG, but detailed and i included pics!

love and deepspace, on the most basic level, is a chinese sci-fi romance game where you date very handsome male characters and go on “adventures” with them. you can play the game in english, mandarin, simplified chinese or japanese— i currently play in english but im thinking about switching to the jp dub bc it sounds reallllyyyy good!

there are 5 love interests: zayne (doctor and my husband), xavier (monster hunter just like the mc), rafayel (artist and secret other thing that i wont spoil), sylus (leader of onychinus my fucking man 😭) and caleb (ummm, childhood friend and ill leave it at that)

here’s a fairly accurate description i got from twt the other day. in order from left to right we have: xavier, rafayel, caleb, sylus & zayne… it seems yandere-ish…. and it lowkey is, but it doesn’t feel like that when playing the game LOL

the game has got some really pretty graphics, interactive storytelling, and even some action/fighting/combat parts so it’s not just 100% romance. you can text, call, and go on dates with the characters, so it’s kinda like a mix of a dating sim and an rpg. (practically an otome game if you’re into that.) ALSO there’s a SHIT load of angst and lore so if you love a good fanfic, you might fw the game!! but there are a lot of thing that make up for the angst. 🙂‍↕️

the game’s biggest aspects are the story and the dating cards. there are 3 star cards (basically useless), 4 stars (which i loveeee bc you’ll get cute interactions and to unlock story moments) and 5 stars (the best). 5-star cards in l&ds are the rarest and best ones you can get. they have the prettiest artwork, the best stats for battles, and exclusive interactions with the love interests. since it’s a gacha game, you have to be lucky (or spend in-game currency) to pull them. basically, they’re what everyone wants because they give the most special moments in the game. here’s what they look like!

PROS:

- the guys are sexy and bangable /srs

- it makes me and a lot of other people really happy… like not to be cringe but talking to them genuinely makes my day better

- ITS GENERALLY FUN! you can fight wanderers (what the monsters are called), play cards or the claw machine, take pics of ur mc and love interest, or just listen to them talk!

- it’s a GORGEOUS game. the developers worked really hard and you can tell

- great stories, like nobel peace prize winning, gut wrenching stories (zayne)

- the 5 star cards and the banners are always so fucking good. especially this last one!!

(photobooth, kitty cards, and a 4 star card)

CONS:

- will make you hate irl men probably

- STORAGE OMFG 😭 the app is HUGE

- it’s really hard to get the things you want if you’re playing for free which is why im lowkey telling you to run…

- the gacha system for cards will make u want to die

- really hard to binge once you finish all the stories and story updates are really effing slow (not complaining but…)

- upgrading cards takes a lot of resources and you have to grind A LOT to progress in the game that includes raising affinity levels for love interests (raising affinity unlocks new texts, calls, video calls from your LI)

- also the game hasnt done re-runs of any old cards, so if you start playing now, you wont have access to any of the cards from previous events which i effing HATE. bc i started playing 3 months after the game first dropped and i missed 3 banners 💔

- it’s hard to get all love interests if you’re playing for free 🥲 pick your top two and wish for the best

(affinity levels, missing banners, cards i wasnt able to get but really wanted. 💔)

anyways i like to projwct onto baxxy so this (one of my faaaavorite songs ever) is also him-pilled

voice-wise im not sure of the sound? kind of scraggly tboy voice. with the exact cadence of fry from futurama

i think this sound is very roy and i think she is a bit scatterbrained and absent minded (not exactly amnesiac but yk)

roy is far from dumb but i think high energy hyperpop is very much her style and i chose this song specifically because of the palpable tgirl swag. in the same vein i hear dubstep heavy mlp and fnaf fansongs and thing "this is kinda roypilled"

i think she would sound a bit like backxwash voicewise maybe. very smooth.

i associate tally very heavily with old-ish britpop (and both of the magrittes with glam rock) he wouldnt listen to weezer or radiohead (baxter absolutely would though lets be real) but he would Understand them. now imagining bax showing him angsty earth music (very cute).

Let’s just state the fact that this whole situation was very unexpected. Very unexpected. You didn’t expect the King of Curses to take a liking to you at all. Yes, you were a special grade curse like the man himself, but nowhere near as strong as him, making you wonder what were his real intentions.

The first time you met, you just happened to stumble on a fight that was going on to which you took slight interest and sat on a cliff to get a better view on what was going on.

Only to see that the Sukuna was one of the people that were fighting and due to the fact that you didn’t want to be his next target, you slowly got up from your seating position and turned around to walk away.

Only to suddenly see a pair of red eyes staring back at you - or rather 2 pairs depending on what era the both of you meet. This of course leads you to be surprised on the sudden encounter, causing you to nearly fall off the cliff - only if you didn’t quickly create a tall structure of ice to help you.

“Oya? So you can manipulate ice without water”

“Shouldn’t there be a fight you need to concentrate on?”

“I don’t need to worry about that right now, I’m interested in you”

And since then this man wouldn’t leave you the hell alone.

If you were laying on a tree to get some sleep, this man would be on a branch watching you from above. If you were standing on a lake to freeze it with your curse energy, this man will manipulate fire to melt it - only to find out it doesn’t melt! Oh no….. (you ain’t a special grade curse for no reason)

“Ha? Your ice doesn’t melt?” 

With you only replying to him by opening a small portal midair with your curse energy to then fling an ice sword at him - resulting in him somehow getting hit.

“You can fight, I like you” Sukuna mentioned, once the ice cleared to reveal that he was bleeding slightly on the forehead.

Wait, like you? That. Was. The. Complete. Opposite. Objective. Of. The. Plan.

Ever since that little incident, there was now no way Sukuna could ever let you go and made it his mission for you to become his and his only. But you were not budging one bit - much to his dismay

“Why are you not willing to be by my side, little doll? I promise I don’t bite”

“I beg to differ Sukuna, can you just leave me alone?”

More time went by and it seemed like Sukuna wasn’t giving up for even a second. However, it seemed like he was getting more irritated by the second, as it seemed like you weren’t falling for his advances. On the other hand, Sukuna couldn’t deny that you were entertaining him with your stubborn nature, making the mission more challenging than he expected.

There would be times where he would - somewhat somewhere - push his pride aside and take your hand before kissing the back of it, only for you to respond back with you lowering your body temperature causing ice shards to appear on his hand.

what the characters in glee would be like during the pandemic: according to me, two years late lol

SUE: would be actively trying to get covid just so she could give it to will and infect the glee club. and of course she would pull it off and be completely asymptomatic.

MR. SCHUE: at first really wouldn’t care about the pandemic. “it’s just the flu” vibes and would wear his mask wrong. then emma would get super anxious about the whole situation and he would reconsider. and of course he would be a total hypocrite by yelling at the glee club for not quarantining or masking right because “lives are at stake” and “this is bigger than you”. god i hate him.

RACHEL: would be going crazy. she heard that getting covid can have long term effects on your lungs and voice and so she would quarantine much longer than necessary, walk around with tons of sanitizer and always wear two masks, and break out the rubber gloves. in typical rachel berry fashion, she’s doing the right thing, if maybe for a selfish reason.

FINN: would be so calm about it. he wouldn’t want to get sick, but he’s healthy and doesn’t necessarily have a lot at stake if he did. so he washes his hands when he gets home and wears a mask, and if it slips under his nose he pulls it back up. he’s absolutely the most normal of them all.

MERCEDES: has all sorts of cute cloth masks! lots of cool sparkly ones or something fun and she really styles them into her outfit. she’s doing the pandemic in style. as she effing should.

KURT: similarly, he always has the most fantastic mask. however, he’s really more particular about staying safe because burt has a pre-existing condition, and he doesn’t want to spread the virus to him. he’s more calm about the situation than some, but he won’t hesitate to quarantine if he’s feeling ill.

BLAINE: respects kurt’s wishes to hang out less when there’s virus in the air. they don’t see each other in person very much but they talk every day. blaine always matches his mask to his bow tie.

So I have like zero followers, but I wanted to vent somewhere, so here we are. I finally found some kdramas I am not a fan of after binging during quarantine these last two years (I’m chronically ill so I have a lot of free time). For the most part I’ve really enjoyed the majority I’ve watched, and have already re-watched a handful bc I enjoyed them so much and it’s digital hangs with my bestie. But I absolutely hated Itaewon Class, You Are My Spring, and Hometown Cha Cha Cha. I’ve been seeing IC and HTCCC on a lot of recommendation posts, and I wanted to see what other people thought about these things I noticed and disliked about the shows.

You Are My Spring, I simply could not finish and did not care to. The trailer was very misleading (I’ve actually gotten used to this with Netflix kdramas), and it ended up being a plot that felt off some how... I stopped after about five episodes since I just wasn’t feeling it. So I guess my gripe with this isn’t the same as the other two which had to do with the relationship dynamics.

I loved Park Seo-Joon in Whats Wrong With Secretary Kim (and I look forward to him being in the next Captain Marvel movie), but the writing for Itaewon Class was frustrating. Yes I liked the lead character and some of the side ones, and it was good to finally see a trans character in a kdrama (though it would have been even better if the character was played by a trans actor. Progress is progress, and I’m glad to see more representation in kdramas.). But I was not okay with how creepy Yi-Seo was towards Sae-royi. If it had been the other way where the dude was adamant and saying “I love you” and forcing physical affection on the woman even after the female character had said no multiple times over multiple years and drawn clear boundaries, people would be screaming how creepy the dude was. So yeah, that made me uncomfortable they ended up together since it was not healthy at all, and he deserved better after having such a hard life (honestly the second female lead was not much better. He should have ended up with someone else altogether. 🤷🏻‍♀️).

Hometown Cha Cha Cha was one where I got really bad second lead syndrome. It broke my heart how the dude loved her so much and the timing just wasn’t in his favor, both in college and again in later adulthood. But he actually seemed to care about Hye Jin unlike Do Sik (in the start anyway). Lastly Hye Jin beating poor Do Sik any time a town person came near them when they were trying to hide their relationship was extremely effed up. Her head butting him and actually making him bleed was not cute at all, and abuse needs to be called out when we see it. That was not a healthy start to a relationship, or healthy in any relationship. But uh yeah. If you prefer shows with healthy romantic relationships… skip this one.

Anyway I definitely will not be watching those three again, and felt like warning people looking for kdrama recs. I guess for reference I should say my top five are: 1) Vincenzo (the writing in this show was so good). 2) Hotel Del Luna (hoo boy the heartbreak in that one hit hard). 3) Sweet Home. 4) Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. 5) King Eternal Monarch (simply for the fact that it was refreshing to see a fresh science fiction story when so many things in America media are being rehashed and recycled). That list isn’t necessarily in order tho, and I honestly have more favs than just those. Runner ups include: All of Us Are Dead, When the Camelia Blooms, Mystic Popup Bar, and Shopaholic Louis.

your flat stayed almost the same as when he last visited: the accent decoration that was the small succulent on the coffee table was pushed to the side to accommodate three books, the throwpillows stacked on an armchair, and the many polaroids of you and seungmin that he decided to randomly stick around your bookshelf were still on their rightful places the same way he last left them.

and he ultimately decided to fix everything upㅡminus the polaroids. it looked cute there. he inwardly giggled at his softness for you.

he turned the television on in hopes of passing time, and coincidentally, the reality show that you starred on was currently being aired. a sense of pride washed over seungmin as he watches you and another celebrity gush over beautiful wedding gowns. the episode's mission was to give the celebrity a fake wedding and you were given the role of the maid of honor, so it seemed. well, befitting for the deemed nation's sweetheart who never failed to show her caretaker personality in every single show she was casted on.

now, prior to this (around the start of the year), you took the nation (and the internet) by storm when you casually dropped the announcement of having a boyfriend in one of the shows, and it seemed like even the other celebrities you were with while shooting the scene were flustered by it. however, this news was already approved by your company. even though you didn't give a name, the media ate it up, and naver was flooded with comments congratulating your boyfriend for snagging a sweetheart.

he was proud of himself for having you as well.

suddenly, the camera panned to which the entire staff could be seen, and then panned to you who was looking past the cameras, your face flushed.

"oh, should i? but i'm just the maid of honor. . ." you said, to which the director insisted you find a gown for yourself. the celebrity you were with giggled in glee.

you sighed in defeat, but smiled in excitement nonetheless. a few effects and wedding chime background music later, the wedding shop's staff pulled the curtains open, revealing you, the nation's sweetheart, smiling shyly, dressed in a sparkly white ballgown, and a bouquet of white lillies in your hands.

the celebrity, the staff, and even seungmin, gasped at the sight of you, drinking you in. you looked ethereal under the warm lights of the dressing room's stage, and as the celebrity continued to drop compliments about how you looked so good in the gown, seungmin felt his heartbeat pace rapidly against his chest.

images of you in the same wedding gown popped into his head, as you walked down the aisle with your father, the same, shy smile adorning your face slightly hidden under a veil, and a proud seungmin waiting for you at the end. imagining it alone moved seungmin to the point where he felt his eyes sting with incoming tears.

it continued as you tried on other gowns, but it was clear to everyone on the set that you looked absolutely ethereal in the first one, even to seungmin. then, the celebrity asked a question he was eager to hear your answer for.

"you told us you have a boyfriend. . .what do you want to say to him?" you had giggled at that, and seungmin's heart melted as you pushed away the veil.

"don't feel pressured. i know you're antsy on your seat right now." the show and seungmin laughed at your comment. "let's. . .go with the flow. though, i'd like to spend my life with you."

seungmin smiled softly at that, his heart lurching. just then, the door jingle chimed across the flat, but seungmin was too engrossed by you being carefree and showing your sweetheart personality that he did not notice you watching him in awe.

"no pressure," you suddenly said, causing him to look back at you. he opened his arms wide, and you ran to him, dropping your bag, to jump on his offer of a tight and loving hug. he peppered kisses on your head as you snuggled closer, taking in his fresh scent and feeling the love and excitement melt on your heart, effectively coating it with your affection for your boyfriend.

the soft murmurs of conversation the two of you had as you both tuned out the television and let the afternoon turn to evening, was enough for seungmin to start mentally planning for a day to start looking for wedding rings.

and true enough, only half a year later, once again you, the nation's sweetheart, took the nation (and the internet) by storm when you posted a picture of your shining engagement ring, along with a photo of seungmin.

Episode 19 thoughts

- I love the boys vs. girls scenes! The similarly layered conversations that occur are an absolute delite to watch!

- Engin making Serkan PANIC over Eda finding another man! Like he really didn’t think so until at this point! But also, Melo trying to make her eniste really panic!

- Selin really trying to play house with Serkan.... *eye roll*

- Their individual monologues caused me pain. They want each other so bad. To only be each other’s. To only look and smile at each other. And yet, those words only remain in their hearts, unable to find escape into this world, held back by the circumstances they are currently entangled in. As true and bright as the day but hidden in the darkness of the night deep within their hearts.

- AIDAN PLAYING CUPID FOR EDSER? I begged for this and I’m actually receiving it? I’m shook.

- Ferit suspecting Efe? I was taken back by it, didn’t see that coming!

- KIDS IN LOVE, they are literal children in love! Their sarcastic responses give me life!

- The tension at that breakfast table would cause me so much anxiety!

- HE CUT THE BREAD FOR HER OUT OF HABIT....I literally can’t deal with them! They cause me too much pain!

- He’s gonna name that horse Eda. I just know it. And I’m gonna fall to pieces.

- My heart broke for Aidan after listening to the story. Her guilt toward the loss of her elder son was so strong and powerful that it caged her in her home. A mother’s pain is incomparable. It’s understandable how Aidan may have blamed herself for being missing in her son’s life and why she tries to be involved in Serkan’s. She wants to be involved and stay connected with her Serkan in a way she wasn’t able to for his brother. But by sending Serkan away at a young age by himself, she distanced herself from him. It’s not his fault he doesn’t trust anyone because the two people who he was supposed to trust in life abandoned him in trying to deal with their own pain while neglecting his needs. I’m not blaming Aidan/Alptekin because it’s his easy to judge from the outside. It’s such a deep and realistic way that these characters represent the dynamics and struggles of a traumatic event and the aftermath. Serkan’s inability to trust and fear of abandonment is real and justified based on his past. Aidan’s fear of leaving the house is justified due to the circumstances in which Alp died. Alptekin’s strictness toward Serkan can be explained by the fact that he lost his elder son (who he clearly named after himself) due to an illness and he fears he might lose Serkan too. Which also makes me think, did Serkan really have an illness in the past? I means he’s a bit of a hypochondriac but I’m thinking maybe just because of his brothers illness, Serkan got conditioned to thinking and living a certain healthy way to protect himself.

- I’m glad Aidan told Eda this because I think it might make Eda open her eyes a bit more. I’m not expecting Eda to forgive and forget but I think it might explain to her why Serkan is the way he is.

- If you ask me, Serkan was pretty fair in asking Efe to claim his mistake in front of the team. Serkan built and has lead this team to such a great standard and Efe ruined that in minutes. They rightfully deserved an apology. And Engin being pissed and backing up Serkan as the BEST FRIEND HE IS.

- Serkan being honest about his feelings and wanting to improve things with Eda was such a good thing to see. It may have taken him some time to get there but I’m glad that he’s come to terms with the fact that he can’t be without her. More so, he doesn’t want her to be with anyone else. Serkan is hopeful about their relationship and I think that’s the first time since their breakup. He isn’t trying to convince himself or anyone that they are over with completely. And I think what Engin said really resonated with him. If they can overcome the truth, it’s true love. If not, it’s over.

- His seriousness went out the window as soon as he realized the flowers were for Eda, HAHAHAH! He said burn the flowers! He’s such an idiot

- HE REALLY DRAGGED HER FROM THE CHAIR, I’M DEAD! freaking children behavior!

- Serkan is really trying to keep the truth from reaching Eda from anyone but him but everything really seems to be going against him! Let me tell you, my heart broke when Serkan mentioned his fathers mistake taking away Eda from him. He cannot catch a break!

- Aidan burning Alptekin’s clothes was so funny!

- Why is Selin trying to dig! Let my man Serkan handle this!

- Efe doesn’t know.... did I read that scene right?

- He’s gonna record their conversation! EFE, YOU SNAKE!

- SO IT IS THE GRANDMOTHER AMD SHE DID SENT EFE FOR REVENGE. But it seems like she wasn’t sure but sent Efe to investigate. She’s gonna use that recording to kill Serkan’s career! IT IS GOING TO BE NON-STOP DRAMA.

- Eda making Serkan jealous like that was hilarious! She really created a whole jealousy scene with that man!

- Eda and Aidan play off each other so well at this dinner, it’s hilarious! The way they are setting these ladies straight!

- The way his eyes lit up when she said she’s in love with him still! It’s like he can’t actually believe that! Idk but I found it weird how Eda didn’t want to even listen to Serkan as he tried to talk to her. I mean up until now, all she’s wanted is for him to talk and open up and now that he’s spent the whole day trying to do so, she just ignored his calls or runs away when the opportunity is there. It’s so not like Eda! I get that she’s given him chances before and he’s missed them and she probably doesn’t want to waste any more time giving him empty chances but I feel like Eda used to understand Serkan’s tone and words but it’s like... she just doesn’t recognize in his tone how much he really wants to talk to her. It seems like a character downplay to me for Eda.

- I’m not that invested in Ferit/Ceren, but that was cute, mostly because I want Ceren to be happy! But I swear, this whole Selin/Ferit crap ruins everything! My girl Ceren deserves better!

- He loves her so much, he’s just playing along with her! He’s so in love with her!he really just said have fun, but don’t dance with anyone! And THAT CONFESSION. He said everything with his whole chest. And she didn’t hear! They will be the death of me!

- He took the bottle! Lol bruh, you gonna need at least 2 bottles to get over this mess!

- Selin really trying to come on to Serkan while he’s drunk and he just straight up says, I need Eda. How does she not get the message!

- YES CEREN! YOU TELL HIM GIRL! I mean for real, what did he expect! But I will say I appreciate that Ferit was honest and didn’t lead Ceren on any further and just came out with it.

- HE IS SO DRUNK, I LOVE IT! Eda is fascinated by his drunk state, he’s so cute, she can’t help but melt! That was such a cute way of involving the title of the show! And that scene is sooo cute!

- Her carrying him up the stairs and complaining that he’s heavy. Him being wasted out of his mind and saying off the wall stuff. I LIVED FOR THIS SCENE. PURE COMDEY. PURE EDSER. I WANT MORE.

- THE SHOWER SCENE. That’s it? That’s all we get? I’M SOOO PISSED! The trailer made it seem like such a scene and then they give us this? The frack? That is unacceptable! That was such a wasted opportunity! THEY WOULD’VE KILLED THAT SCENE! AND HONESTLY IT WOULD’VE SAVED THE EPISODE! Ughhhhhhhhhh

- AHHHH SHIT! She got her hands on Eda’s family, that’s it. It’s over.

- See what I mean. Somehow, Eda didn’t understand Serkan. Serkan never really had a good way of putting with words but Eda understood and didn’t completely twist it around. I honestly think Eda’s jealousy of Selin really makes her so paranoid that she’s able to twist around to justify her insecurity in regards to Selin. Which I just don’t get. I mean Eda did have that kind of dynamic with Selin but she was never super jealous or anything. She always had a way fighting back against Selin and still being confident. I just can’t seem to understand where all of the sudden, it’s turned into this.

- It’s out. The secret is out. But definitely not how it should have been. It should not have been from Selin. Selin seems remorseful about it but I don’t buy it. And Serkan looks like his whole world just shattered. And bless Eda. She’s about to really go through it. The last scene was sooooo well acted! I loved the tension, the angst, the anger!

- One thing that I really need to see happen is Eda/Serkan working on their communication skills. Because they suck at it. They are both indirect and never really say what they want and mean straight up. Since the beginning both of them expect each other to understand with signs or by indirect words and it was cute at first but now it’s annoying. Like two people in love should be able to tell each other anything and SHOULD tell each other everything as it is, free from judgement. I don’t want an argument and then they make up in one of their houses. I want them to talk out their issues, their perspectives! Because both of them have quite opposite views and beliefs so it’s very important for them to say everything out loud to each other. Otherwise, their chemistry and relationship is just gonna be for a show and not hold real value and show and realistic aspect to it.

Overall: A really good episode even though some parts did feel lagged. So the big explosion (one of them) has happened. Now we wait to see the aftermath. Honestly at first I used to think that I would know how certain characters would react but now I don’t know. It’s not easy to say where they will take the characters or the storyline so we’ll see! Tbh, Hande and Kerem are really carrying this show with their scenes and acting so I would love to see them get justice with their scenes! The show at some parts feels like random and misplaced but it’s still enjoyable! Like there’s no need for all these side character storylines right now, like give Eda/Serkan their full scenes in full cut and let it play out! Once everything is more wrapped up, you can add the side storylines! It’s still an enjoyable and fun show and definitely makes me laugh and keep me on the edge of my seat but there’s just some moments when the magic seems missing!

GS4 vs AJ:AA - Episode 1, Part 2

Apologies for the delay tonight (today? yesterday?). I started on this a bit late and I came upon a realization as I was going through the scripts again.

I spend most of the time not actually translating, but just searching for things to translate and then coming up with dumb jokes and commentary to go with them.

But it seems most of you like what you see, or at least I haven’t gotten any complaints yet, so I’ll keep doing that.

I know I set a “rule” about not including the colorful dress-up localization of specific lines that were straightforward otherwise because there are too many examples, but it’s really more of a guideline. I believe I have at least one dedicated viewer who had played through the JP versions first and didn’t spend as long on the EN ones. On the occasion, I will drop a few entries if they’re amusing or amazing enough.

Okay, enough time wasted. Let’s finish this case.

This is a name pun that couldn't translate over to English, so they threw in that ancient ORLY? meme. Her JP name is Sakai Masaka (last, first), and saying her name in reverse (first, last) sounds like someone exclaiming, "Don't tell me, it's Sakai!" or "It couldn't be Sakai, could it?"

Then there's her nickname, "Ikasama Sakai" or "Cheating Sakai", and she proudly states it's a palindrome and ends with a snarky "Nice to meet you." (For some reason, I get the feeling Takumi was rather proud of that fact.)

And of course, she's stopped using the formal Japanese by this point 'cause she's gone 180 already. I notice the flow of her dialogue is also a lot snappier, which suits her personality.

料理に盛られた ドクヤクのように‥‥ Like a good borscht, a good plot must be cooked up early and allowed to thicken.

From the JP script: "Scalding hot service like the food we serve." "That sounds like awfully troublesome service." "...It would be during the game when its ills would take effect. Just like a well-served bowl of poison..."

Well, she doesn't do a good job advertising, but I won't ever know unless I go there! Anyone got some hot borscht to share? I've never tried any before. Please go light with the poison, though. I still have a few more games to get through.

５枚目のＡが出てきたんだ。 “スリ替え”があったのは、明白。 The fifth ace came up, so it's obvious the switch went off without a hitch.

その上で、ポケットから よけいなカードが１枚、出てきたら。 Once the extra card was found in his pocket...

そいつは、一生“イカサマさん”の ニックネームで親しまれるだろうさ。 ...Wright would be forever known as a cheat and a fraud.

<Judge> ‥‥それ自体は、ほのぼのした ヒビキなのですがね。 There are worse things to be known as I suppose.

In this case, while they did translate it fairly enough, the judge's last line lost a bit of tension: "...That alone would have left a faint mark." I translated it loosely because "a faint resonance" wouldn't have been too clear to grasp his meaning. He's subtly hinting at Nick's history of alleged forgery.

That said, I still feel this (or maybe the next statement press) was a missed opportunity for someone to say "Phoenix Sleight".

She is clearly shaken up at this point, but there is a golden nugget tongue twister that was lost in translation. Up to this point, she had no problem saying "Ikasama Sakai" with no problem, but here it became "Ikasama Sakasamasai". "Sakasama" means "inverted" or "reversed", just like her situation.

In the 2nd line, Odoroki says "(Crap! My memory was wrong!)" which would have been a perfect fit that I'm surprised didn't make it across localization.

And in the 4th line, Auchi mentions habits, alright. But the word for habit is "kuse", which in JP also can mean "crease" or "wrinkle". To the EN players, we just see him pull out the usual cocky Payne animation, but To the JP ones, we see he's actually pointing to his forehead... And that's why Odoroki is concerned about his own.

1/28/22 edit: So I’ve been corrected and the animation that plays in this particular moment is the same across both versions, where he brushes his hair instead. Though, I’m sure Odoroki is making a pun here about bad habits and about getting “wrinkly” at his age, as a shot at Auchi’s ever increasing degree of wrinkles.

Just a quick note that in JP, they don't highlight her "Russian-ness" as much. Odoroki here just says: "You know that's not gonna work here."

“まっ赤なウソである”‥‥ そう主張せざるを得ません。 ...we are compelled to call Ms. Orly a "big, fat liar".

From someone as eloquent as Kristoph, this line always threw me off and gave me a light chuckle the first time. I think something akin to "a bold-faced liar" would have been more suitable, or as he cites an old adage, maybe even "Liar, liar, pants on fire, red in the face and caught in the fryer."

Don't look at me like that, it's way more eloquent!

‥‥その挙げ句の犯行なのです！ And the denouement of that argument... was murder!

まさに、そんな感じだ。 So tangled, we catch ourselves in the process.

See, even Phoenix gets an especially eloquent line. He doesn't cite an old adage, but he pulls it off in a way that almost feels quite unlike Nick... Ah, well, this game is from Apollo's perspective, so he seems that way throughout.

In the original, the last two lines here are a bit simpler: "Those who would try to ensnare others in a trap, ensnare themselves without seeing it... And this is that very situation." But I really like how poetic they made Nick here. Finally they make him a lot more dignified than he'd ever gotten to be before.

‥‥事件が起こったとき。 “現場には、第三者がいた” ...That there was another person in the room at the time of the murder?

<Apollo> （たしかに、休憩に入る前‥‥ 　成歩堂さんは証明した！） (Right, like Mr. Wright was saying before recess!)

<Phoenix> 事件が起こった後。 １枚のカードがスリ替えられた。 A single card was swapped into the victim's hand after the murder.

スリ替えた人物は、カードが ２種類あったコトを知らなかった。 And the one who swapped the card didn't know two colors of cards were being used.

‥‥つまり。“第三者”だ。 ...A fourth person.

Now this is just being pedantic, but the JP script does use the same exact line that he used earlier, where there was a "third person at the scene". Given the circumstances of the case, we can assume he means a 4th person in the room. While it could just be an oversight from the writers, I don't think it's an error. This expression about a third person is so common in Japanese crime mystery lingo that anyone playing would understand immediately as meaning "there was someone else at the scene".

That said, I'm not sure if this line was later modified in a later port of GS4, so if someone could look into that, please let me know.

In JP, Odoroki replies: "I'm... not fine, just this once." His catchphrase was broken... This is so heartbreaking, guys.

When Naruhodo-senpai praises Odoroki, he actually does it in such a shady way that at first it doesn't sound like a compliment. "Your eyes and ears are... indeed, not clouded like your forehead."

ヒトのアタマにたとえるなら‥‥ ちょうどこんな感じ、かな。 I believe he was referring to a certain gentleman's balding forehead.

Just making a note here: the same term was used in the JP script as well, just shortened to "bone china". One who isn't well versed with the way Japanese can abbreviate foreign words or phrases could easily be confused. (Also, it's French, so it's "pa-tay", not "paet".)

Just making another note here: Kristoph's nickname is unchanged, and the "overbearing personality" he describes Nick as is the "stuffy", almost "heated" kind of way. You know the one, we've all seen it when he really gets into the zone during trial.

<Judge> もう一度、 おねがいしましょう。 Let's try that one more time.

今度は、しっかり考えてから 発言するように！ And, Mr. Justice, think before you sink.

Nick's line about the "old days", Naruhodo expresses as "甘ずっぱい" (amazuppai), bittersweet. The judge then follows up with the "ほろ苦い" (horonigai), somewhat bitter, penalty. Such beautiful poetry.

“おろかしい”弁護人の 主張は却下します。 I'm afraid you're more than in peril of a penalty this time.

Ah, I see why they chose the word "perilous" of all things. It's because in EN, they started with "problematic" and wanted another p-word to keep with the original joke. See, Odoroki uses "okashii", or the "suspicious point" when giving his answer, and Kirihito responds with a "No U", but then exchanges it with "orokashii", meaning "stupid". Naturally, the savage judge follows it up by calling the defense "stupid" too.

The judge straight up tells Odoroki to wipe away his sweat on his vest. Odoroki is just in disbelief that anyone would bring up his vest for once.

犯行の瞬間、あの小窓は “ふさがれていた”というジジツを。 And someone was... while the window to that room was blocked by a cupboard.

Normally, I don't mention the colorful dress-up localization text, but this exchange is dope. For reference, the original exchange goes: "...Oh? This is a first to see you so shaken..." "Ggh...! That can't be..." "Seems like... you just happened to overlook it. This truth that the window was 'blocked' during the moment of the crime."

(Yeah, a lot of conversations that Takumi writes or helps write are like this. The localization has to spice things up regardless of the tension levels, and I can respect that effort.)

<Judge> ‥‥牙琉弁護士。 私としては、信じたくありません。 Believe me when I say that I don't believe this is happening, Mr. Gavin.

There's a bit of dress-up here too, but I'll just explain that this "parlor trick" he describes is originally "kodomodamashi", basically a trick to fool a kid, "child's play" so to speak.

I never actually got to see this piece of dialogue when I played the game because I found the answer quite quickly, so I'm surprised to see Nick straight up give away the answer. Even Naruhodo-kun kept the hints to the last line here.

Ngl, playing through this game the first time was the first time I came across this word, "devotchka". Yes, it's a Russian word meaning "girl", but the spelling is English and I just learned this now as I looked it up. In JP, he simply calls her "that cute little prankster".

I so love this exchange. And for once, both versions are equally good. The difference is only in the last two lines: "Up to now, nothing's changed. All I did... was lend a spark to the powder keg... in the right direction, of course."

Btw, I also appreciate the use of "tête-à-tête" here. We know Kristoph is the type to use the occasional French word even in the original script, so this is the perfect topping to finish.

Just kidding, he also curses a few times here and there. But the ESRB is silly (read "stupid") and would have docked these games if they included one too many swear words.
