Never Love an Anchor

So here’s a little drabble I was working on for hitman JD!! This is what started it all :] (Keep in mind Branch in the au is transfem so I will be using she/her pronouns for her <3)

Branch marches up to the strange troll, pushing Poppy behind her and shoving a finger into the man’s chest, “Hey! If you think I’m just gonna sit here while you get up in my girlfriend’s face you’re dead wrong!”

The taller troll’s head tilts listening for a moment before taking a step closer to Branch. The latter nervously pulls her hand back to herself, still glaring up at him as he gets far too close. His stupid googles reflect her scared face right back at her.

Suddenly his hands move and Branch flinches. She squeezes her eyes shut, but no blow comes. Instead she hears a very gentle, yet scratchy voice.

“Bitty B?”

Slowly opening her eyes the first thing she notices is his face. He had pushed up his goggles, revealing a scruffy face covered in various scars and nicks. But what really caught Branch’s attention were his eyes. They were wide and almost frantic as they never left her face.

The worst part? Branch knows this face.

She knew who this was. She could never forget who this was. But why now? Why 20 years later?

She’s knocked out of her train of thought by him carefully reaching a hand forward towards her. The hand brushes against her cheek, and she can see his eyes begin to water.

Suddenly overwhelmed, she pulls herself back and closer to Poppy - who stands behind her, completely mystified by the interaction.

His hand stays in place for a moment before falling to his coat, gripping the edge of it tightly. He’s yet to say another word, so Branch fills the silence, “No one’s called me that in 20 years.”

He winces like the words physically hurt him, and they might as well have. Branch waited every single day for him - for any of them to come back.

And now one of them finally had. And all Branch could find herself thinking was

Why now?

happy holidays great day to tell everyone about the plotline in my head where john got snippy with jacob ( bc in my head, jacob is not a huge holidays person ) and told him he should, and I quote, "bring the deputy with him to keep him company" and jacob took that literally ( knowing john was being facetious ) and showed up with salome in tow.

the worst part? salome went half-willingly. she thought jacob was fucking joking when he said over the radio "you're coming with me to christmas dinner, whether you like it or not". but SURE ENOUGH he was not, and she showed up to the rendezvous point like an IDIOT, got kidnapped, and plopped on john's ranch as jacob's plus one ( of sorts ).

bonus points for her probably cooking part of the dinner bc she heard the horror stories of the watery mac and cheese and was NOT going to let the cult ruin her christmas even more.
