Something I've come to learn
I used to think that summer
tasted like the sticky sweet bottles
of hard lemonade
stolen and shared in a friend's backyard,
but now I know just how silly
I had been.
Summer is more sophisticated than that--more mature.
It took some growing,
but now I know that summer tastes
like fresh rain and cut grass
with just a hint of burning charcoal.
It's family,
and it's meant to be shared with one.

thewritingcafe: I did a post on religion a while...
@eschatonmaiden I think they would have been more generally named as “worshipers of x” or “people of the Way” or something like that? good question. i think fantasy writers sometimes have to act as one part historian in a way, naming things.
I guess it varies, then. I never gave a constructed religion’s name much thought. I have another point to consider now.

Okay listen up writing folks i’m going to have a big ass rant tight now so @thewritingcafe you’d better reblog
Right so if you’re using a romanian character or the typical shady/vampire-ish transylvannian guy cliché (i’m not saying ou should) don’t think you can type a russian/slavic name in there and watch it all work by itself! Hell no
Romanian is a roman/latin language with turkish and slavic influences, which makes our whole culture really unique. Catalonian is one of the closest languages to it— so is italian, spanish and occitane. Even french. That’s why many romanians migrate into those countries.
I’m reading a book in which the 18th century transylvannian creepy guy is named, quote, “Miroslav Alexander Leopold Rakoczy”. I’ve never heard of any of those names used ever in my life (except alexander, which is alexandru, btw. No alexei or anything). As for the last name, it doesn’t even qualify?? Like we don’t even have k and y in our alphabet. And it sounds russian.
If you want truly unpronounceable romanian names, try Mihnea, Mihai, or Iancu (for males). Maybe Ileana for girls. Some common present day last names are “Popescu”, “Ionescu” (which literally translates in johnson) and so on. Most last names end in -iu, -escu, or -ea/-ia. Never “sky”, “czy” “ovici” etc. I can’t offer you any historic information on last names, unfortunately. I’m pretty sure they went with nicknames. Anyway, research is very important so DON’T SKIP IT.
Don’t think that you can pull off a cliché unless it’s really well executed.
And if you’re wondering why is a romanian talking about transylvannia, you should pick up a geography book and realise that transylvannia is a region in the middle of romania. Then maybe frequent history too and realise that all vampire rumours come from a certain ruler “Vlad”, nicknamed “Țepeș”(tzepesh) because he put disembodied heads on stakes to scare off the turkish enemy (țeapa=stake).
Some germans got inspired and wrote about a certain Dracula. The name comes from Vlad’s father, Vlad (yes i know it was like 16th century royalty stfu) “Dracul”, which is the current word for demon (“drac”) and means dragon in latin (like the hogwarts moto: Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus - Never tickle a sleeping dragon. Draco means dragon, dormiens means sleeping, nunquam is never, and titillandus must mean tickle. I did this translation without needing any google translate. You know why? Because romanian is really close to latin. It’s a latin language. The way its verbs conjugate is actually the closest to latin from all living latin languages.)
Long story short, do your research when writing romanian character names
-A very pissed off romanian teenager

today.
My writing kind of saved me today. I was feeling very down with all these personal and family problems snowballing. I will write about it when I can gather up the strength to.
I didn’t know what to do today when I started to cry, I don’t cry a lot anymore. Most things make me feel numb. Things that should mess me up, having me throwing a wild fit, don’t effect me the same.
Crying I thought how meaningless my life is, and how I gave up on so much. I am slowly suffocating my life until it extinguishes. When you give up on life it suffocates the air your dreams live off of.
When REAL life problems hit me in the face, the thought of how broke I am, how my family can barely get by, how I was sold the american dream and never reached it...I want to crawl into a deep dark hole. Huddled in a ball until I wither away slowly into dust.
I thought how if I did lose it all, how freeing it would be in a way. Nihilism is me. If my family was out in the street and I lost it all. Would I feel anything then?
And then I came to the realization that after awhile I got used to pain, and maybe all the bad that happens to me is now a way of life. And if I did take my life wouldn’t I care? I know others would, and slowly move on. Like driving past a car accident. But, would I even care about whats to come in my life. If I don’t care about the future then whats holding me back from darkness?
I wanted to vent my frustrations, feeling lost I picked up my old journal. Tossed on the floor of my room is where I found it. I stopped writing in it years ago, and only a few pages are filled out. I read passages on it that made me cry more for that girl. But also healed that wretched little devil inside me that wants to destroy me. At least for now.
Sometimes hearing your own pain makes you feel less alone I guess.
I posted some of my entries today and will post more soon.

Your tips on increasing vocabulary?
Vocabulary! :D See, contrary to popular belief, it’s not a Herculean task to improve your vocabulary, and 100% not if you’ve got patience and no deadline.
So to the tips:
Tip 1: READ!!!
Read a lot and read good books. Purple prose, florid prose, olde English, classics (personally, I’m not a big fan of those but coursework is a thing… Also I love reading A. C. Doyle, so), poems– contemporary AND classic literature, literature spanning different geographical areas, languages, cultures, genres.
“But Anushree”, you say, “the sea of literature is vast and limitless, so how do we know what to read, and where do we start?”That’s true, and it’s simple. Narrow your choice down by picking your interests and choosing a genre (you needn’t stick to it for all your reading), then look up books in that genre. As far as choosing a specific book goes, you may choose an author you’ve heard of, or read reviews and see which ones sound interesting, or narrow down to sub-genres and specific kind of writing. Remember though: Reviews can be subjective, so look for well-written, objective ones that give you precisely what information you require. Pick books from good publishing houses, but try out small or new or self-published ones too. If over 42% of the reviews tell you that a book is poorly written, skip it or save for later!
Pro-tip here: Goodreads is your friend.
Also: Don’t be disheartened if a book doesn’t turn out like you’d hoped or anticipated, it happens! Pick up another book, take on another journey!
Addenda: Reading newspapers and articles is good too. I’d advise you to skip the gossip section because it’s mostly trash dressed in glam, and pick up social critique or editorials. If you’re somewhere where The Hindu is available, subscribe to it!
Tip 2: ORGANIZE!
OK this one depends on what sort of a person you are and which learning techniques work for you. The common advice is that
If you come across a word you don’t know the meaning of, or the meaning you think you know doesn’t fit the context, then don’t look it up straight away, try to guess the meaning and then look it up; I’ve observed that this makes the word sit deeper in your memory.
ROOTS! Learn about etymologies of words and the meaning of their roots. It’s a fun way to make learning words easier, and the best part is that if you learn one word like this, you learn at least a dozen more with those roots!
Notice the spellings! Especially the vowels and their placements. This is more of spelling and grammar but it’s imperative to pay attention to these little details if you’re trying to seriously build up vocab. There are little tricks and tips to grasp these concepts too.
About true organization, you may find some, none, or all of these useful:
Maintain a small notebook or diary where you note down strange or interesting words you come across. It’s all about curiosity, really.
You needn’t note down the entire dictionary meanings of words, just keywords do well, and an example to contextualize it maybe.
Never go by the direct meaning! Look up at least one example of usage, because otherwise this can result in serious follies. (An example from experience are the words ‘necrophile’, ‘pedophile’, and ‘bibliophile’. God, that was embarrassing.)
Use different colors for different things: words, meanings, examples, parts of speech, idioms, proverbs, etc.
Pay attention to Americanized and British English spellings! (If you’re the nit-picky sort.)
Enroll for online vocab programs or get a Pinterest account to prettily store and pin stuff.
There’re many more such things, these are just starters! Experiment and see what works for you!
Tip 3: WRITE!
Writing improves writing, reading improves writing, both improve vocabulary. Take Chuck Palahnuik’s advice while writing, and drill your brain to use words instead of just storing them. It’s much like gymming, you know, except mentally, so it takes a bit of pain and gives a lot of satisfaction. :P
For starters, avoid using the same word often. Use synonyms, look up related words like antonyms, homophones, homonyms, rhyming words, related idioms or proverbs.
Don’t try to use everything at once or rote learn everything at once! Ease into things, it’s better to sub-consciously but deeply register something than to make a note in the short-term memory and not find it ever again!
Tip 4: ASK!
Never ever never ever ever ever hesitate to ask what something means or what book to read or what author is fit for you. Talk to your fellow logophiles, bibliophiles, enthusiasts. Take recommendations, discuss things, books, words. Be excited and talk to excited people. I’m not even kidding, oftentimes doing this as a community helps everyone grow better and faster.
Bonus: DIG FAN-FICTION!
Take this with a pinch of salt. There’s a LOT, A TERRIFYING LOT of utter trash in the name of fanfiction out there, and a lot of that is mentally scarring. *shudders* BUT at the same time there is true treasure out there too, and it will make you weep tears of gold not just because it’s so good, but because it’s so well-written. So try taking recommendations from fanfic veterans. I truly believe that there’s a fanfic for everyone out there, and if you don’t find it, why, write it!
Bonus 2: LESS IS MORE!
With respect to spoken and written language, your usage should depend on your audience. I’m not kidding when I say that asking for directions in Shakespearean verse will be a faux-pas. It will be. Similarly, using street slang in a school paper will be counterproductive.
So learn all the words you can, but use them judiciously!
And most importantly: USE THE WORDS YOU LEARN!
I cannot emphasize this enough.
I cannot emphasize this enough.
I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH.
If you swallow a dictionary but never use the words, you swallowed a dictionary for nothing. Just learning fancy words and not using them is a waste of time, energy, and mental space. So USE THE WORDS YOU LEARN! Use them in writing, in speaking, in thinking, but for the love you bear yourself, USE THEM! :D
That’s the gist of it. I hope this helped at least a little bit, and good luck on your vocab journey! :D
