Summary:

Summary: No one seemed to have noticed, but Kagome had changed on her return to the feudal era. She could still traverse the well to her own time, but no one knew. And she wasn't about to tell anyone. Divulging that the well was still open would lead to having to explain why she never went back, and it was something she just couldn't do.

She sighed as she stared at the campfire, rubbing her arms absently to ward off the cold air. The weather had begun to turn, the telltale colours of autumn painting the trees yellow and red, and she shuddered at the thought of the oncoming winter—and what it would lead to. She didn't glance over at her sleeping bag, however. It was already occupied. Shippou and Rin were curled around each other, entranced in a book she'd 'discovered' in her bag.

At least they were warm, she thought wanly, trying to fight her shivers. Their eyes began to droop, book falling from their hands, and Kagome's jaw clenched, forcing herself to her feet so she could tuck them in. She kept the comforter between her and the kids, shifting the book out of their reach, only to jump when she felt a hand reach out from the blanket and grab her own. Panic seized her, freezing her to the spot as she looked down at them. "Did you enjoy the book, Rin?" Rin nodded, yawning loudly as she held Kagome's hand. She managed to keep her hand from shaking, pulling it free as soon as Rin's breath evened out, her steps steady until she reached the treeline.

She doubled over as soon as she was alone, slowly collapsing as she fought to breathe. Her stomach heaved, vision blurring as she raked her hand across the ground, the sting of rock and dirt distracting her from that. Burying her face in the dirt, Kagome desperately tried to pull air into her lungs, needing to breathe but also to—

"Miko."

The single word washed over her like ice water, the knowledge that she wasn't alone stilling her movements as she let out a warbled laugh. "I thought you had patrol."

"Your reiki was pulsing," he said by way of answer. "Yet I see no enemy here."

Kagome shook her head, avoiding his gaze as she struggled to get her heart rate, and reiki, under control. "It's nothing. I just saw a worm and was startled."

He leaned against the tree beside her. "You have never shown fear before."

"It was a big worm." She managed a wan smile as she looked up at him.

He gave her a calculating look but said nothing, motioning towards the camp. "You are safe within the confines of the pack, miko."

"It's not that," she said, sighing, but didn't elaborate. She couldn't, especially not to him. Sesshoumaru oozed strength and confidence; something stupid like this would only gain her a sneer.

"Hnn." He watched her for a moment. "Come. You will accompany me on patrol."

Kagome started, finally looking up. "Really?" He never allowed anyone with him, usually waiting until the children were asleep before departing.

Sesshoumaru inclined his head, waiting patiently for her to rise and follow him. He was tempted to offer a hand, though he'd never done so before, but the way she angled her body away from him kept his hands by his sides. "If you tire, we will return," he said, leading her into the moonlight. "Should you find sleep to be elusive in the future, you may join me again."

"Do you want to leave?" he asked, expression serious and unperturbed by the knocking. It would be only a moment before her attendant burst in and forced her down the aisle.

"That's what I've been trying to do." Her shoulders began to shake, her voice cracking in desperation. "Everyone sees this as some magical fairy tale no matter what I say. And then I wasn't able to say anything."

"There is another way." Calmly he set down the hairpin before offering her a clawed hand. "Step out the window with me, miko."

"I'd rather do it myself than jump and hope that the fall does it for me," she said matter-of-factly.

"I do not intend to kill you." His lips quirked. "It would not satisfy my desire for revenge against the human vermin you would have otherwise wed."

"I can't do anything else," she said, following him meekly onto the balcony, the knocks from Hina getting louder. "He'll either find me or someone else will bring me back." Her hands clenched into fists, blood pouring between her fingers. "They don't understand."

The door suddenly tore open as the assistant came barreling in. "If you consent," Sesshoumaru murmured, watching her, "he will never be able to find you."

Her voice and feet were steady as she reached for him. "I don't want this."

"Then come with me." He pulled her against him as clouds formed beneath their feet, launching them into the air before Hina could reach them. The tower she'd been living in, been trapped in, fell away, the sound of Hina's panicked scream barely reaching her ears as they picked up speed. Kagome didn't care where he took them so long as he didn't take her back.

Such an interesting start to what promises to be a wonderful fic @moon-ion! You don't often see Kanna working so well with her siblings. We can't wait to see what this reunion has in store for our lovely miko.
