Ffs my body is frustrating sometimes. It's only noon and I'm already depleted of energy and at my maximum pain threshold. All I did today was pay rent and make some phone calls
#i needed to get some cleaning done this weekend but my body wouldn't let me then or today#and theta's out of town for another 2 days#i think it was the laundry on thursday that broke me#it's normally theta's job bc u have to go up and down stairs to get to the laundry machines and my knees are brutal#and I have a maximum carry limit of ten pounds#theta was sweet enough to get all the then-laundry done before she left but that was 2 weeks ago#and in addition to the clothes that accumulated in that time I also got ThredUp card for xmas and had a huge haul delivered#and it all needed to be washed#AND two of them ended up being handwash only! but I'm glad I did it bc the sweater was deceptively dirty#I soaked and stirred it around a bucket of cold water and detergent and thought that was that at first#but when I hung it up in the shower to drip/air dry I realized the water dripping down was rusty brown?? the sweater was gray. ew#it took TWO days of soaking and wringing and stirring and dunking the sweater in and out of constantly changed water for it to run clear#ew#wash your clothes before you donate people it's not that hard#anyway I did the first half of all THAT on the same day of doing laundry and I think I overtaxed myself#bc I didn't listen to my body and tried to get it all done but now I'm being forcibly rebooted. and I'm a 90s computer so it's taking days#don't do as I do#chronic pain#chronic exhaustion#disability#chronic illness#rest or your body will MAKE you rest

15.01.2024 // winter quarter
syntax continues to be my hardest subject to grasp :') but i'm doing my darn best! theta roles were something from the first syntax class i took that i struggled the most with, so our prof for syntax ii going over it is really helpful. we also worked on some problem sets from our textbook, which, surprise, make a lot more sense when i'm actually going to the class and getting to work on them collaboratively.
i was a little wiped out, so i did skip my second class of the day, but it's the first time i've missed it, and the prof is very understanding—i emailed him to let him know that i wasn't going to be able to make it today, and he told me i only needed to write a summary of our readings to our TA.
my final class of the day was my chinese lit class, and it's absolutely fascinating—but unfortunately the TA isn't the most charismatic teacher, so it makes it a bit of a struggle (plus there's a student who carried over from my last chinese lit class who i do not like). but the subject matter is fascinating and i love learning about later chinese literature, so that makes up for it.
went out for dinner and studying with a friend after i was done with classes—we tried out a different place than usual, and had pho, which was surprisingly not horribly expensive (i budget in eating out about once a week so i can meet up with friends, and cost is something i'm very conscious of, since i only work ~11hrs a week), then went to the library to track down some kazakh textbooks (we wound up finding a couple promising ones—our goal is to get the basic grammar down so we'll do better in our kazakh class, which has a very laissez faire structure).
also started filling out the application for the UW-madison's intensive summer central asian languages course; my prof mentioned it to me and there's a lot of financial aid i'd qualify for that would help largely, or entirely, defray the costs. besides that i'm trying to work out how to pay for kurdish classes with the kli next year—they work on a semester system and the courses are three credits, so it's not horrifically expensive, but i'll need to save from my job so i can make the extra cost, since it's not through my uni.
rest of my week is coasting from here on out—i don't have classes thursday or friday, only work, and then i have a long weekend, with monday off, so i'm rather pleased.

Newsweek: Ron DeSantis Accused of Being 'Pro-Slavery' Due to New Florida Curriculum
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is facing new criticism over his state's new curriculum for African-American history in which some say is "pro-slavery."
DeSantis, a Republican who is running for president in 2024, has made his embrace of right-wing social causes a cornerstone of his style of politics. He has decried "woke" education, signing into law requirements about how race can be taught in Florida schools as educators across the United States grapple with conservative efforts to limit discussions of diversity, including African American history, in public schools.
Advocates for more restrictive lessons on race have argued all sides of a political or historical debate should be presented in schools. Critics, however, are accusing DeSantis and other Republicans of attempting to erase the history of slavery, and that students should learn about this topic in its entirety.
This standard has sparked criticism from educational and civil rights leaders, who have accused Florida Republicans of seeking to whitewash the history of slavery.
Representative Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat, accused DeSantis of being "pro-slavery" over the educational policy.
"Please keep this simple: If you require schools to teach the 'personal benefits' of slavery you are pro-slavery. Ron DeSantis is pro-slavery," the Democratic lawmaker tweeted on Saturday.
— Rep. Eric Swalwell (@RepSwalwell) July 22, 2023
DeSantis defended the standards when pressed by a reporter, saying that he "wasn't involved" in writing these standards, which were "not done politically."
"I think what they're doing, is I think that they're probably going to show some of the folks that eventually parlayed, you know, being a black smith, into doing things later in life," the Florida governor said. "But the reality is all of that is rooted in whatever is factual."
Newsweek reached out to DeSantis' office for comment via email.
Still, many others also condemned the new standards.
Will Hurd, a former congressman from Texas who is also running in the GOP 2024 presidential primary, tweeted on Friday, "Unfortunately, it has to be said – slavery wasn't a jobs program that taught beneficial skills. It was literally dehumanizing and subjugated people as property because they lacked any rights or freedoms."

Jaime Harrison, the chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), slammed the policy as "disgusting."
"The much anticipated DeSantis reset: Teaching our kids that slavery had its benefits," he tweeted on Friday. "Disgusting."
Vice President Kamala Harris, during a speech at Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.'s 56th national convention in Indianapolis on Thursday, described the standards as an attempt to "gaslight us."
"Just yesterday, in the state of Florida, they decided middle school students will be taught that enslaved people benefitted from slavery," she said. "They insult us in an attempt to gaslight us and we will not stand for it. We who share a collective experience in knowing we must honor history in our duty in the context of legacy. There is so much at stake in this moment."

Nick Visser at HuffPost:
A fraternity member who directed monkey noises at a Black University of Mississippi student during an anti-war demonstration was kicked out of the organization on Friday after video of the encounter spread on social media. “Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters is aware of the video regarding the student protest at the University of Mississippi,” the organization wrote in a statement on Sunday. “The racist actions in the video were those of an individual and are antithetical to the values of Phi Delta Theta and the Mississippi Alpha chapter.” “The responsible individual was removed from membership on Friday, May 3.”
The confrontation took place during student demonstrations at the University of Mississippi, or Ole Miss, on Thursday. Protesters gathered to voice their opposition to the U.S.’ support of Israel during the country’s ongoing war against Hamas following the Oct. 7 attacks, part of a growing wave of demonstrations on university campuses around the country. As a small group of students chanted “Free Palestine” and “Stop the Genocide,” they were confronted by a far larger bloc of counter-protesters. Videos of the encounter showed the counter-protest group growing aggressive, surrounding and yelling at the demonstrators. In a disturbing moment, a white student is seen making monkey noises directed at a Black woman as others taunt and cheer.
Videos of the counter-protesters were shared widely on social media and prompted support and adulation from Republicans. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) said the response “warms my heart.” Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) added his own cheers as the Black student was jeered, writing: “Ole Miss taking care of business.” Jaylin Smith, 24, told CNN she was the woman in the video. The Daily Mississippian, the university’s student newspaper, reported she was called “Lizzo” and various obscenities, with some chanting “Lock her up.”
James Staples, the man who was behind the racist monkey noises at a Black woman named Jaylin Smith during protests against Israel's genocide of Gaza, got booted from Ole Miss's Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Theta, a decentralized video delivery network, announced the alpha release of Theta EdgeStore, a new component of the Theta Edge Node software, on Thursday. Theta EdgeStore is a decentralized, append-only storage network for permanent web content, leveraging content addressing and key/value storage. It operates on tens of thousands of Edge Nodes globally.
Theta Network expressed excitement on Twitter about this key milestone in their 2023 roadmap.
Theta's decentralized video delivery network runs on a dedicated blockchain, aiming to reduce content delivery costs by creating a mesh network of shared content. With EdgeStore, Theta Edge Nodes, already capable of decentralized streaming and encoding/transcoding, will now offer a complete decentralized service for various file transfers and streaming, not just video.
EdgeStore employs “flexible sharding,” an extension of the Chord protocol for distributed hash tables (DHTs). Each EdgeStore node stores permanent data shards and caches popular content locally, functioning as a decentralized content delivery network for diverse file types.
Theta EdgeStore can support decentralized applications such as NFT asset storage, AI training data, layer 2 scaling solutions, and web3 DApp and Metaverse digital asset storage. Currently, Theta Labs runs the test phase storage on cloud instances of Edge Nodes. Upon successful testing, storage services will transition to public Edge Nodes, allowing operators to earn TFUEL.
The Theta team plans to release an updated roadmap soon, detailing the global deployment of EdgeStore and its final version for business adoption.

The University of Mississippi is investigating a student who has gone viral for mimicking a monkey toward a Black woman participating in a pro-Palestinian protest.
The university has opened a student conduct investigation after the protesters were met last week by actions that appeared to convey "hostility and racist overtones."
The student, identified as James "JP" Staples, was caught on video making the sounds and gestures has also been removed from his fraternity. Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters released this statement.
"The past few weeks have been challenging for many colleges and universities across the United States as they struggle to balance the protection of free speech with maintaining appropriate and respectful discourse among demonstrators and others within the campus community.
As part of that community, Phi Delta Theta recognizes that freedom of expression is part of the collegiate experience; however, the Fraternity is committed to upholding its principles as a private membership organization.
After reviewing the incident, it was determined that the individual's behavior was unacceptable. The action in question was offensive, outside the bounds of this discourse, and contradictory to our values.
In partnership with local alumni, undergraduate leadership, and the university, disciplinary due process was initiated which resulted in the removal of membership. The situation will continue to be monitored in cooperation with any further investigation."
About 30 pro-Palestinian protesters were demonstrating in a barricaded zone Thursday when an estimated 200 counterprotesters surrounded them. Some held American flags, Donald Trump flags, and others dressed in red, white, and blue.

More Construction
Thursday November 16th / 10 am to 2 pm (Supervisor : Marina )
Another day of rescanning negatives. I never realized how time consuming this activity was. 15 minutes to scan about half a sheet of negative x 2 = 30 minutes roughly. The construction folks continued their assault on theta building.
Today there was a discussion with the head archivist Molly who came by to chat with the Community Archivists. Discussion were about job-related situations, for example if the Community Archivist is working on MLK day, would they received higher pay because it is a holiday? Again, more discussion about the move to the new building. The Community Archivists would prefer to have their own meeting space in their section of the office but plans seems to be in the air. The Austin History Center seems to be carrying a lot of stress.
On Alice Yi Papers, I email Molly some questions about putting the Finding Aid together. I finally have a response and working on the paper work....

TheWhiteHouseSpin.Com / SPIN PUBLISHING Vice President Kamala Devi Harris Presents Remarks at the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. National Convention Reported by Karen Ann Carr ( Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated )
WASHINGTON, DC - Vice President Kamala Devi Harris presents Keynote Address during the 56th National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc convened at Indianapolis, City in Indiana at 1:35 PM ET on Thursday, July 20, 2023.
On July 13, 2023, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated announced "Vice President Kamala Harris will serve as keynote speaker for the Social Action Luncheon during its 56th National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Delta Sigma Theta is one of the largest historically Black sororities, and more than 20,000 members will come together in person and virtually for the biennial convention on July 18 – July 23. This year’s hybrid conference is the first time the Sorority has met as a national body in Indianapolis. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a nonpartisan organization with deep roots in political activism. A portion of the 56th National Convention will be centered on spreading awareness about the Sorority’s current legislative priorities and impact on issues like combating voter rights and suppression laws. Under the direction of its National Social Action Commission, members will also vote on resolutions that govern the Sorority’s social action endeavors. The Sorority’s long history of social action began months after its founding when it became the only African American women’s organization to participate in the March 1913 Suffrage Parade."
Statement from National President Elsie Cooke-Holmes of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated: “We are honored to welcome Vice President Harris at a time such as this — a time when more than ever, we must move forward with fortitude and elevate our power for a new era of impact. Vice President Harris has worked to break barriers and fight for working families throughout her lifetime of public service. From her days as District Attorney of San Francisco and as the first Black woman to serve as California’s Attorney General, Vice President Harris has been guided by the words she spoke the first time she stood up in court: Kamala Harris, for the people.
As the first Black American and first woman to serve as the District Attorney of San Francisco, the second Black woman to serve as a United States Senator and as the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American Vice President in U.S. history, Kamala Harris shares the same passion for sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action as Delta Sigma Theta — and we are proud to have our Divine Nine sister stand with us during our national convention in Indianapolis.”

WTNV is good.
Moonbase Theta, Out, is also very good. Season 1 came out at the beginning of the pandemic so the episodes are very short and mostly a single VA (this is only the case for season one). (future. space. super fucked up corporations. The bases on the moon are shutting down, and Roger, the communication lead on Theta, is sending weekly broadcasts with updates and reports of how that goes. fair warning that there's an accidental death, and it and the grief of it are pretty lasting.)
The Strange Case of Starship Iris is working on season 4 which will be the final season. (also space (theres a trend here). Smugglers. There's a heist episode. We love discussions of imperialism)
Second Star to the Left. (Space. Complete. A scout is sent to a habitable (mostly) planet to set up for a colony that is scheduled to arrive in five(?) years. During her trip to said planet, a union proposal passed which gives her audio contact with a representative every couple days.)
Give Me Away. (Graham is going through a separation and dealing with how that impacts his career and relationships with his adult children. an alien spaceship lands on a random thursday. It's empty and it's Screaming/Wailing. The program that develops to handle the spaceship and its data is interesting to Graham if only because its something to focus on.)
If you're interested in discussion based podcasts, comedy shows, or investigative reporting podcasts recs, lemme know!
So I now have a >1hr commute 3-4x a week. I need narrative podcasts and I know nothing about podcasts.
I'm considering getting into WTNV? I guess? It's literally the only one I know of with a narrative.
Suggestions????

The Sorors of The Leavenworth Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc have been all over the classrooms of Leavenworth and Lansing, Kansas reading books by African American authors. I looked forward to spending time with these kiddos at David Brewer Elementary on Thursday. Reading the book “Trombone Shorty” The kids enjoyed the story and even participated by saying “Where Y’At” during the reading. ❤️😄 #TromboneShorty #NAARI #NationalAfricanAmericanReadIn #BlackHistoryMonth2023 #LeavenworthAlumnaeChapter #DST1913 https://www.instagram.com/p/CpErOrSuqyNt_d_9Wzw3FR38RY6TWohRuUWyV80/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
