Just some new apparel designs made this week. The looks seen here are made from a thrift store and include a scarf that I wrinkled, and some men’s grey slacks that I cut into a few spiked skirt looks that are quite on the mini side - held together with a single reinforced button on one side, and repurposed punk spikes hold together the side seam. I never thought fabric would be such a beautiful Art form. It’s challenging and it pulls on the sense of touch far more than music or Painting. This is where millions of people sometimes work in conditions not wildly dissimilar to those in Bangladesh’s Rana Plaza building to make the fabric for our clothes. “While supply chain workers struggle to earn a living wage and lead dignified lives, and people of color, minorities and women are devalued, while we fall far short of climate change targets, extract resources at an unsustainable speed and pollute our land and our oceans, the world’s biggest fashion brands are getting steadily richer,” says Somers. “This needs to change. Brands need to do a lot more to ensure shareholder profit is not prioritized above the health and wellbeing of workers and their communities and the protection of precious ecosystems.” …the stark fact is that many brands don’t know their full network of suppliers in order to disclose it. “They either do not see the direct benefit or they don’t care to uncover the realities in their supply chains,” asserts Ciara Barry, Fashion Revolution policy and research coordinator. “Uncovering risks makes them more accountable and responsible for remediating problems found so they choose not to look.” These brands, who often have no problem claiming to be “sustainable” and “ethical” for valuable PR, do not invest in the time-consuming work of mapping out their supply chain.
