#HeresMyMovieReview of #TheSquareFilm: @thesquarefilm: The Good: This will be your facial expression sequence in every scene - 1😮, 2😂, 3🤔, 4😐, repeat. This could be an award winning satirical mini-series but then no one would watch it past the first episode because it repeatedly stabs at the conscience of the viewer. No, it has to be viewed in one squirmy sitting. The Bad: The long running time; the slow pacing. Empty your bladder & grab a cup of coffee. The Hmm🤔: Intense gorilla man! One awkward situation after the next. Yep, I give it 5 out of 5 viral marketing campaigns gone bad. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, 2018. The Square
i just watched "The Square" on Netflix. It's a documentary that follows a group of revolutionists through their part of the Egyptian revolution from the beginning in 2011 up until July of 2013. Without going into too much depth I just want to say it it brought something into perspective.
For one, a leader who lies to their people and rules by injustice should be toppled, his entire operation should be shutdown, and the government should be purged to thoroughly purge their plague from the system. I also now have a new stance on political intervention from not only the US but the rest of the world. We're all born into this world, we didn't decide how, when or where but we are all here and we have to play with the cards we're dealt. If basic human rights are being neglected by others, it's the rightful duty for us to help free the oppressed, no matter the situation. I used to think that the US needs to stop getting involved with every dispute that happens around the world. Yes their a revolt over in Cairo but why does that affect us? We're not even on the same continent! But then I watched The Square and saw that for years, these people have been stuck under political militant rule, for years they've been beaten for speaking out and for years they have been dying for speaking up against what was wrong and for trying to show what is right. And sometimes they need help. The theory of proximity states that as an issue gets closer to our backyard, we start to care more. So what if this revolt wasn't in Egypt, but in your country? Your state, your city? Would you then speak out against the military running over your friends with tanks? Or using live ammunition on protesters? I would, and you should too. I don't see the issues in Egypt, or the Ukraine or wherever to be "their problem" but "our problem". Human problems. We need to stick together as humans and stop fighting for nothing and start fighting for something. It's our duty as humans to help other humans.
Also
The military. I always wondered what the guys in the uniforms thought of what they were doing? The film briefly addresses this when one of the main characters Ahmed asks "And what about the soldiers? Have they forgotten who they are? Have they forgotten that they're Egyptian?". How do you sit there and run over other people who grew up in the same situation that you did? Shoot bullets at people just because they want their voice heard? How do you lose all feeling and numb yourself to their problems? It's sickening. Journalists don't get enough credit. The Square is a film that needs to be seen and the issues it brings up taught to everyone.
This film just has me thinking alot about myself and what I want to do. I spend massive amounts of time reflecting internally about what I've done, should've done, did do and will do. Especially in recent times.

I like the first 2 words of that title a lot more than the last four.

"Jehane Noujaim’s stunning new documentary … a story that non-Egyptians may know from news reports, but one that has not yet been told with such rousing and heartbreaking clarity."
Well that's nice.

I've been working with the team behind The Square for nearly a year. Making it to Sundance and then winning the Audience Award was a pretty big deal. As was realising that the story wasn't finished, getting the team back to Cairo to continue filming through Morsi's departure, then recutting the film in time for Toronto, and winning the People's Choice there too. It's been a lot of fun and a real privilege.
If you're in LA or NY, it's opening a limited run this week. If you can go, reblog, Like, plus 1 or even fucking pinterest it, I'll love you forever.
New York Film Forum (3 week run) These three opening nights have a Q&A with Jehane Noujaim (director of Control Room, Startup.com), Khalid Abdalla (star of The Kite Runner, Green Zone), and Karim Amer (badass).  Friday, October 25, 7:50  Saturday, October 26, 7:50  Sunday, October 27, 3:20  I promise it'll be worth it.
Los Angeles opens 1st Nov for 1 week only. Sundance Theatre on Sunset in Hollywood Laemmle Theatres Monica 4 in Santa Monica
