The sound of Rain

Bustling noise of city traffic. 10-hour long day at work. Push my way through the crowds that seem to be growing bigger as it gets darker, just to reach the refuge of my hostel room and collapse into bed. Eyes closed.  Cool breeze seeping into the room through the partially opened window. The monotonous sounds of motors and horns from the highway nearby, as people impatiently try to get home, fill the hollowness of my room and form a rhythm in my head as I slowly slip away into unconscious sleep.

Ever so gently, however, the breeze woke me up, compelling me with its soft cold hands to open my eyes. I wonder at the unfamiliar smell it carried along. It hasn’t been long since I moved to the city, and thus my curiosity to find out the source pushed me out of bed. Opened the door and stepped out into the dark night. It took a few seconds to understand what was happening, to recognize the soft tapping s on my shoulders. And with a gasp, I said, “rain”.

Have you ever wondered what sound rain makes? Back in my village, rain comes crashing down. The noise is deafening until your ears get adjusted to it. Conveying messages to someone even in the same room becomes a complicated task. Thus, we choose silence until the roaring dies down. So, imagine my shock when I step outside my room, and cannot hear the rain.

As my eyes adjust to the dark, I look around in amazement, getting soaked all along. Silent rain. What sound does rain really make? Think about it. We hear objects and surfaces getting hit by rain. We hear the wind carrying the rain along. But have you ever heard the rain?

quarantine tag game

1. Are you staying home from work/school? No, I still have to go to work (I work for the police).  But the doors are locked and the public aren’t allowed in...

2. If you’re staying home, who’s there with you? My husband is home, he’s “working from home”.  

3. Do you have pets to keep you company? My beautiful and demented lab/husky cross Mulder.

4. Who do you miss the most?  everyone.  my best friend keeps texting me plaintively.  

5. When was the last time you left your home? other than to work I went to the post office to get my new boots

6. What was the last thing you bought? decaffeinated instant coffee and a bag of frozen fruit but there were too many people in the aisle so i panicked and grabbed the closest bag and it was the one with the giant lumps of inedible unripe peaches with blueberries and tasteless strawberries

7. Is quarantine driving you insane or are you finally relaxed? I am ok, life is pretty much the same up here in the Arctic, other than me being concerned about my family in the south...    

8. Are you a homebody? I’m a couchbody.  with a heating pad and a laptop

9. What movies have you watched recently? Dr. Sleep.  Very creepy.  Also Little Women, the new one

10. An event that you were looking forward to that got cancelled? Well.  I was supposed to be in Spain right now walking the Camino with Rachel.  And I was supposed to be going to England in September to do a year onsite at the University of Portsmouth but I’m thinking that’s not going to happen either.  

11. What’s the worst thing that you’ve had to cancel? Spain, really, we’d been planning it for 3 years.  

12. What’s the best thing you’ve had to cancel? I can’t think of anything honestly lol  

13. Do you have any new hobbies? Cryptic crosswords and picking fights with my husband.  Not necessarily in that order. 

14. What are you out of? Just one thing - Fishermans Friends that I took up sucking when i quit smoking, there don’t seem to be any and town and I heard people think they cure coronavirus.  

15. What music are you listening to?  Recently Nickelback, Styx, Elbow, Prince, Paul Simon, Paul MacCartney, and Iowa Public Radio Classical.  

16. What shows are you watching? Catching up Modern Family and Vikings.  

17. What are you reading?  Sexual assault law and police interviewing for a book chapter I got suckered into, Daniel Defoe’s Journal of the Plague Year, Little Women/Little Men/Jo’s Boys because I was sure the movie had some embroidering  

18. What are you doing of self-care? Trying to eat healthy and not obsess about everything.  Food is going well, chill not so much  

19. Are you exercising? I run every morning on the treadmill.  And walk my silly dog 

20. How’s your toilet paper supply?  Hmm good I think

21. Have you made any changes to your hair during quarantine? I have been wearing headscarves because it needs cutting so badly.  which makes me look like I should be working in a welding shop.
