I don’t think Ivan was as popular of a human pet among the Segyein as he usually gets depicted as being.
Ivan went into Alien Stage with a popularity placement of 78th, and while we don’t have the rankings for all the contestants, this is an incredibly large gap when comparing him to someone like Till, who entered when he was in 5th. During the competition itself, Ivan gained a massive influx of fans, as seen in Top 3 when it says that he was “1st place in real-time fandom voting,” but I don’t think this means much given that there were only three people left at this point and with how large Till and Luka’s fan bases already were prior to Alien Stage. This feels more like catch-up than anything else.
When asked in an interview what his “charm” is, Ivan repeats what he’s heard from his fans, that being his snaggletooth. Others have mentioned before that besides Round 6, Ivan was the only character whose round was just a straightforward singing competition. He didn’t try to get around the rules or overwhelm his opponent; he did as he was told, just like he always has, but the problem comes with the fact that his conformity doesn’t allow him to stand out. Ivan’s fans remembering him most for something as superficial as his tooth comes off as them grasping at straws to find something unique about him. He may have made it to the semi-finals of the biggest show in the galaxy, but compared to his peers, his obedient persona that he’s cultivated to survive just seems boring.
When at Anakt, this persona worked the best because he was in a school-like environment where his teachers valued his adherence to the rules the most, not necessarily his creativity. Ivan was well-behaved and studious, which made him desirable in that kind of environment. It's basically the opposite of Till, who does badly when he's not allowed to be flexible but flourishes when given the freedom to. We get a lot of content of the cast from when they were at Anakt Garden, so it makes sense why people would assume that Ivan's popularity there translates to his popularity outside of it, but I don’t feel like that’s the case (point brought up by Castor here & here).
#alien stage#alnst#alnst ivan#I think this is most of my thoughts on this#Ivan is honestly just “some guy” to me who isn't so much as someone who is naturally skilled but someone who just--#works hard to get where he's at (mostly for survival reasons)#also this is just a personal thing but I'm not the biggest fan of when Ivan is made to be this super popular idol/model--#in comparison to Till#I think Tills the rockstar between the two of them and if Ivan has those jobs its because he was forced to#he shouldn't have to be an idol or model or even at the club he should be in the woods dissappearing under mysterious circumstances#or just fishing

Okay so I wanna talk about the ecosystem of a fandom space like Fable/Bound SMP and those that extend off of it.
(long post below)
So one of the things that kinda stands out to me is that many of the popular ships are just canon. Like… off the top of my head the only two popular ships that aren’t necessarily canon in Fable are Kaleidoscope (Midas x Malitae) and Prison Duo (Centross x Icarus). But even one of those has been hinted at being canon by Sherbert in a few streams so like???
Looking at this from the outside it’s almost worrying. But the thing is, I think it has to do with three different things that are all unique to the Fable/Mer/Bound (and adjacent) fandom(s) and might actually be the sign of a really warm and welcoming community (as the Fable & adjacent fandoms have always been imo).
Firstly, the medium. If these were not lore-heavy, highly improvisational, live-streamed stories the fandom wouldn’t be able to provide feedback and the creators wouldn’t be able to react to said feedback in time to adjust. Think about Hermitcraft, it’s highly improvisational, yes. But lore-wise it’s not super heavy and thus all ships kinda teeter on the edge of being canon or not canon. Likewise smth like Whitepine where it’s recorded beforehand (and I think scripted??) doesn’t give the creators the flexibility to adjust the content in the same way the fandom is moving as quickly as the fandom moves.
Secondly, the fact that the creators interact with the fandom. Hi, hello, I’m living proof of this cause if I hadn’t gotten picked up by Heyhay and Art I never would’ve gotten to become one of said content creators. But this goes far beyond that. This has to do with the fact that they listen and interact and bounce ideas off of their fan base. Even if it doesn’t always feel like it, the opinions and ideas you guys share out here do influence the story, even if it’s just confirmation that you guys are picking up what the creators are laying down. It still serves as a sounding board to see how well things are coming across, and speaking as a creator myself (albeit a newer one) I find it incredibly helpful.
Thirdly, the size. Obviously if this venn-diagram of fandoms was as large as say Hermitcraft or QSMP the content creators simply wouldn’t be able to keep up with the fandom and many ideas would get lost in the jumble. Even just with how large Fable got at it’s peak, there came a point where it was nearly impossible to keep up with the amount of fan art and theories that were being made. So I think this point kinda feeds back into the second, that having a smaller size helps the content creators keep up with the feedback they receive from their art and lead to the fandom having more influence on the story than anyone really realizes.
These three things work together to create a space where people get to feel heard and seen. One of the most enticing things about being a community member for me was having that ability to influence the story, to talk to the characters themselves, to poke them about things I wanted to know the answer to. And when they responded?? It was so cool! I remember I used to keep a tally of little things in the world that I had affected because of messages that had been sent during live chat. It wasn’t ever anything big, but sometimes it’s the little things that count. That’s why, as a creator now I try really hard to interact with community members. I know I’m obviously not one of the big creators in this space, but I still want to help you guys feel seen and heard, because that’s where so much of the magic of being a part of this fandom space comes from imo. And if I can help recreate what helped me fall in love with this fandom space even a little bit, I’ll do what I can.
Anyway, I’m just super grateful to this community and the fellow creators within it. I have been so lucky to be able to get to experience this fandom from both the community member and creator side and honestly it has just been one of the most overwhelmingly positive experiences of my life, from both sides of the spectrum. I know things like that are fickle. I know fandoms and people are always growing and changing and maybe that won’t always be the case. But I just wanted to say I really appreciate the community that has been built here and all the work that goes into keeping it a positive and safe space. So, thank you guys 💕

The reason those C3 fans shit the bricks over the Charity stream was because they viewed the charity stream as a win for them and bells hells. Not like you know, an actual good thing to help people in need. Because when it was announced they were in the qrts and on twt yelling that the cast closing to play as Bells Hells was cause they loved them above all. That BH were "winning" because MN didn't get one shots while airing. No1 expected anyone BUT BH to be played so they were fighting air tbh.
[Cont. So when Laudna got yeeted and Beau joined it, it's like they suddenly hit with the fact that the cast like all the times. All character sheets were available and BH was being played by default of the one shot happening during c3. But they hung their entire world view on BH being extra special that they broke. Saw them also being PISSED at Ashley and Liam for getting MN members to the top before everyone else and especially the gate was "showing up BH".]
Here is what gets me, as a person who does not follow sports in any form: The Mighty Nein are a juggernaut of popularity within the fandom. I think this is for the most part deserved and I also think a lot of fans of C1 who never vibed with any later campaigns are simply not active in fandom any more since it's been 7 years, and Critical Role had more recognition with Campaign 2, so like, numbers within active social media fandom are not a perfect indicator of quality, itself a subjective measure.
HOWEVER. If you want your team to win, the most efficient way to do that is to start rooting for the winning team. I get that this is considered treasonous to genuine fans of sports. But like, if your biggest priority is Number Is Bigger then there is an obvious solution and it's called jumping on the bandwagon. Otherwise, perhaps you should consider a different metric, such as "did I have fun at this game? Were the snacks good? Were there some cool plays?" (from this you can see my priorities re: live sports namely are my friends here and did I get some nachos and a beer but you get my point). Honestly, this is how I and a lot of other people have been approaching Bells Hells week to week for some time now: were there some cool scenes? Did the character they liked most at the time say something funny? Did NPCs do anything? Were the fight mechanics interesting?
I have a post that I am saving for next week about specific elements of C3 that goes into more depth but I feel like Campaign 3's fandom in particular fell to a certain attitude that feels very specific to a younger (to me, an ancient crone, so like, mid-20s) crowd, of obsessing over numbers: how many fics. how many notes. how much screentime. can you believe that Episode 100 didn't even have Bells Hells in it????? And it's like. who the fuck cares. Is it good? Is it satisfying? Because right now we're watching you guys all admit it hasn't been and 120 episodes in you were waiting for the campaign to REALLY begin.
I don't think the cast dislikes Bells Hells! I think they all like all of their characters, and frankly when the cast gets asked directly a lot of them go with a "you never forget your first" and give their VM character anyway so like, the vitriol at the Mighty Nein really is a petty popularity contest in the end. But Bells Hells are the party that the cast happened to be playing during the Moon Plot Campaign and the party that the cast happened to be playing at the time of the livestream. None of the three main parties are uniquely special. They are special to their individual fans.
I made the Elon Musk comparison for C3 fans earlier this week and I don't want to go too hard since like, he is truly horrible, and I do think that a lot of C3 fans, while currently shitty self-absorbed people, are also quite young and it is my hope that a sharp but ultimately harmless disappointment like this campaign might shock them into fixing their hearts, but the final lines of this post came to mind while writing up a lot of my responses: "And in fact I would argue that seeking to put yourself above other people is inherently going to leave you empty, because egotistical as you may be, you've adopted a values system where your sense of self worth intrinsically depends on other people. Congratulations, you played yourself."
If your day can be ruined because your blorbo wasn't present for 100% of a live stream for charity and the cast likes all of their characters? You should work on that! I'm not saying it's easy or fun but it really is a thing you should work on because right now, the worst thing that's going to happen to you is people laughing at your misfortune on social media. But if you keep up this behavior, you're going to be bitter and miserable forever, and it will be your own fault because you're getting mad that something that was never about you continues to not be about you. Learn to accept that you had a good time (if you had a good time, anyway) and it's over and that's okay.

the PJO -> Voltron -> My Hero Academia pipeline is so funny to me. like yeah we all know - you were into PJO, got into VLD in ~2016 when the entire pjo fandom moved over there, and in the last two seasons you jumped to BNHA, right? right. bonus points if you were in Homestuck too. we all know how it goes.
#pjo#riordanverse#vld#voltron#bnha#mha#the funniest part is when somebody tells you one of their ships for one fandom and you can name at least three they ship for the rest#like oh that's a nice emo guy x big beefy heart of gold. you ship it three times dont you#oh you ship the quiet one with his loud rival. mhm. let me guess you have two more of those in the back#there are other fandoms you can throw into here too but most are just. what was popular at the time#or what's extremely popular now#this specific route is more like. a bunch of people from one group all did the same fandom loop#the alternative route is VLD to She Ra but it seems most people went more fully into BNHA

“John Juniper is just plain evil guys!”
“I just don’t understand why Juniper is so popular!”
“People only like Juniper because he’s hot!”
#guys this fandom is not that old and this discourse is practically cyclical with how reoccurring the statements above are#and it’s always juniper that gets attacked#for some reason#I swear y’all act like your coming up with the most original takes like this#but I’ve already seen it three times this year#as someone who’s been here practically since the beginning I’m just done with this shit#this is why I block people freely and easily#see also: John juniper doesn’t like girls/is sickened at the idea of kissing one even for a role#and agent Phoenix can’t be a girl/use she/her pronouns#ieytd#ieytd fandom#john juniper#if you really want to know why juniper is so popular#read the celebrity crush series on ao3#if you send an ask I’ll even make it available for guests to read

we got the york/north/wash trio, but we deserved the wash/ct/maine trio. no I will not elaborate
#i will never get over the fact that we get more about wash and maine's friendship in a NON CANON trailer than the actual show#like what the actual fuck rt!!!!#the only reason north/york/wash is a thing is bc they were the three most popular characters and s10 is pandering to the fandom: the show#rvb#red vs blue#mine#not t/oaru

Playing 3DS games after having seen the overall fandom response to release and long-term impact and the way it's looked back on and such is... bizarre, honestly? Like, maybe it's just because we got our introduction to gaming in the 3DS era, but it's incredibly strange to know that games we knew and loved and would have considered relatively mainstream just... didn't stick in people's minds.
Like, take the Gen 6 Pokemon games. Those were great games! One of the single things about X/Y/OR/AS that we don't see people talking about but that stuck in our mind was how the developers made an effort to make it so that every single Pokemon in the games prior was spread between just those four games! We remember that just the sheer variety of potential Pokemon available was enough to get us a start into challenge runs simply by virtue of how much variety could be added to a playthrough by the sheer amount of potential on offer!
We remember spending hours just... hunting around the region to figure out where those last Pokemon we needed to fill the 'dex were, wandering around to try and find Hidden Ability pokemon from Horde battles, getting to actually interact with our Pokemon in Pokemon Amie.
Yeah, there were more obscure games out there, and yeah, they impacted us as well - Pocket Card Jockey stands out in this regard, as an extremely fun game that we're pretty sure was played by maybe three people, maximum, but it's not quite the same. These were games that we played ourself! These were games we saw other people playing, that we played with people over the internet, that felt like they were well-known! We were under the impression that these were mainstream interests, not Niche! it feels... singularly bizarre to realize that, for the majority of people out there, this game was a forgettable disappointment.
#we speak#nintendo 3ds#obviously theres the nostalgia factor and such since the 3ds was the first gaming console we ever owned#as well as our ONLY gaming console for like. right up until ~2 years ago we think?#but like. youre telling us that x/y is less popular than sun/moon?#you mean there are real actual people who think that hgss's following mechanic was more notable than xy's entire bottom screen?#you don't like petting pokemon? pat pat?#we went into hacking our spare ds today and getting some games off of hshop#and like. gods. do you know how fucking bizarre it is to go into the games that shaped our...#well. maybe not childhood but certainly a substantial part of our teen life#and discover that all of the games that we remember loving the most are like. seen as Forgotten Entries or Black Sheep?#this doesn't just extend to x/y btw#we see a lot of people dunking on like. gates to infinity? and like yeah gti wasnt the most POLISHED entry out of em#but it was still an incredibly enjoyable game that had massive impact on later entries in the series#gates to infinity's core themes carried forward into super mystery dungeon to the point that psmd can read as a direct continuation of it!#its like. augh! youre telling me that when we say we loved gti we're expressing an opinion only shared by like three people?#what are we? the Random Black Sheep Unloved By The Fandom As A Whole Guy?#...well. we mean. we kind of are that guy judging by our taste in characters but STILL#you cant tell us that the games that made up most of our communication outside of our family for over a year are Forgotten#and just expect us to like. be okay with it#when we said we were going to get more weird we didn't mean learning people think the 3ds games are The Worst In The Series#what do u MEAN u genuinely think that xy is the worst in the series and have proof we are playing it right now and its very fun#how about our proof huh. we are using a mothim for our nuzlocke run and having a great time. if u think its too easy turn off the exp share#we are in your house and home#we are also mad that swsh doesnt let you turn off the exp share from when we played it in a totally legal and not piracy related way

The problem with BOTW is that it's obnoxiously popular in the LOZ fandom to the detriment of other games but also unfortunately it's genuinely really really fun to write fanfic for.
#it really hits that perfect fandom balance of good but not THAT good you know#its base is really interesting and you can do a lot with it. there's a lot of freedom to be had playing with its characters and concepts#contrast and compare to Link's Awakening which imo has a way better story and is my most beloved zelda game#but also like. what do i even have to add. how do i write fanfic for it when it has such a great bookend#like i don't even really want to do AUs or change the ending#the reason I like it are the Themes(TM) and changing the story too radically or changing the ending risks losing that#don't get me wrong i can and have written link's awakening fanfic. i am writing link's awakening fanfic right now#but it's a lot harder to come up with concepts bc it already does such a good job with all its stuff#on the other hand botw does not utilize its story potential much yet establishes enough it's fun to expand on#so with link's awakening i'm like ok. how do i put marin in Situations this time when the game's already the best Situation she could be in#and with botw i'm like 'so here's three different link and zelda role reversal AUs'#'this is the one where zelda is transmasc'#'this is the one where urbosa is fighting ganon link is dead and riju and zelda are on a roadtrip'#'and this is the one i'm planning a 40k hubris fic for'#being a fandom hipster is all fun and games until you like something popular#at least i still don't care much about link#my posts#loz#botw

Tfw I must be Mature and an Adult about my massive NOTP which also happens to be a super hugely popular ship
I'll see others complaints about it being morally wrong and I Will have to, like, sigh and be like "I also hate it, and I hate that even if I block the tags it shows up, but it's not bc it's morally wrong, it just sucks 😔"
#it's more like “wowh bad taste tbh” it's the same feeling i get when someone says idk they liked zack snyder movies “bad taste bro”#and it's always so popular and the fans are almost always annoying i can count like three persons that aren't annoying about it#that and it also tends to be a case of 'you would rather ship the most dull yaoi stuff under the excuse of 'the woman was badly written#“not my fault this woman was badly written compared to the man that has almost the same screentime and has a deep bond with his friend/son”#also obligatory Not All Of Them#but it's irritating#ranting#fandom stuff#is probably obvious what i'm talking about isn't it

Going to start saying it now to try to manifest it into reality:
TIMERRA SWEEP FOR CYL8
#my absolute dream for CYL8 would be Timerra and Ivy in the top for womens#and honestly I think Ivy might be a safe bet because from what I’ve heard she seems to be quite popular in the fandom#understandably so I also am marrying Ivy#for mens I would love to see Alcryst and Fogado but I kinda feel like 2 younger brothers isn’t the most likely#I’m only thinking in the context of Engage characters because tbh I am expecting a similar scenario to Three Houses#i could be wrong ofc but that’s what I’m expecting#Timerra#FEH#Fire Emblem //

Remembering the 3 week period where I was smacked with a frying pan about GiroriWin, and got unexpected brain worms over them. Only for Win to get exploded the next episode... following by Girori getting fired
#jokes on toei though that will not end my obsession with this pairing#im used to shipping ships with barely any screentime or interactions#they cannot stop me because this is the sort of stuff that usually happens to me in the first place#it was the wildest and most memorable three weeks I had in a fandom in a while#at least win has an actual chance of coming back. i still believe he will return to us one day given his actor didnt post flowers#ankheiji (along with a few other popular toku ships) a really rare exception to my usual shipping habits#my brain is just naturally drawn to ships that have maybe 4 other folks at most also into it#i do have a decent handful of popular/established ships but it is not as big as my list of rare ships#i tend to eat dirt over ships that leave me in rarepair hell the most#those three weeks were a very humbling experience for me.... reminding me of my typical ways#and that ill never stop being like this#no regrets though#anyways i need to make more art and fics of them again sometime (i also just need to make more geats art in general)#linky posts#linky watches geats

it is truly bewildering to me that there isn't more tedtrentrebecca fic out there
#fun fact! the fic I'm working on is over twice as long as all the other fic for the ship combined! and I'm not even done with it#I just don't get it. tedbecca and tedtrent are the most popular ted ships and trent and rebecca have an interesting dynamic too#so why is no one combining these three relationships. I thought we liked triangles in this fandom#is it because trent is gay?? because the joy of polyamory is it leaves room for nonnormative relationships so jot that down#eta I'm going to put this in the tag for#awljtla blogging#but I'm not going to tag the ensuing anon hate 🙃

im thinking about pjo character design analysis now and it is definitely not the hour to be doing this. hm.
#three of my favorite things: pjo. character design. and analysis.#its just very cool and fascinating to me!!#like. especially for characters in non-visual media/mediums#what traits does the audience or fandom latch onto more? what things in combination become distinct to that character?#to the point of being specifically identifiable?#that's such a cool topic to explore!#and having been in the pjo fandom so long and having watched popular designs for the major characters evolve it's especially cool#cause you get to watch over time what sticks and what's lost and what gets picked up by fanon for awhile#which also is extra interesting for the minor and background characters#cause they dont get drawn nearly as much and dont have nearly as much description#so you end up with relatively similar main character designs and WILDLY different minor character designs#with some rare through-lines of popular fanon. like Katie is a good example#she has next to no description but the fandom pretty collectively agreed ''okay. like red or strawberry blonde-ish hair. braids. flowers.''#its kinda cool how some characters most people just kind of settle on something
