There's a twitter thread I read once that was about the way Digimon lore works before Kakudo (the director for Digimon Adventure) was brought on to make Adventure and adding more of his own lore stuff to it.
Why am I bringing this up? Well, because a few things makes much more sense with the Adventure reboot when you are actually aware of what was present prior to stuff Kakudo added. Also, I made a post at one point talking about how Digimon Survive expands on what was established in Adventure in a new continuity while the Adventure reboot (which we will call Psi for simplicity sakes) was placing the characters in a more modern setting. Obviously some of the reblogs are clearly liking what Survive is doing more than what Psi is doing.
So a bit of a recap for those unaware of the kind of lore that was present prior to and after Adventure.
V-pet lore: Digimon are evolved computer programs that became sentient that live in the computer network. The Dark Ocean is also established via profiles of the dark demonic Digimon on the old Digimon website as well as the Net Ocean. File Island was a man-made island in the Digital World made to research Digimon. DigiLab is one of the organizations made for that purpose and in the Sega Saturn vpet game, Hackers were established as people who use Digimon for evil purposes and someone in the DigiLab research team ended up sending the player a Digimon to raise to deal with them (for those who played Cyber Sleuth this all seems familiar does it?)
Adventure lore: Digimon are creatures that existed alongside humans even before digital technology was a thing and in the past had been subjugated or manifested as other mythical creatures like Yokai. Once digital technology become a thing, these creatures uses the tech to properly manifest themselves. Human thought and emotions also have an influence over Digimon. The Digital World is now made clear to be a separate thing from the computer network that some people assume where that world is but said network can function as a medium of sorts. Koushiro/Izzy initially assumed the Digital World function the way it does with the Vpet lore but finds it doesn't, making it clear Digimon Adventure lore functions very differently from what was established prior.
And that's just how much Adventure established its own lore and does its own thing, adding a more mythical/fantastical element to the lore.
Some of the following Digimon series have gone back to the more technological roots (though I don't know if any of the seasons afterwards goes hard into the more mythical based stuff like the Adventure seasons and movies did), with Appmon's lore being just full on pre-adventure Vpet lore updated for the modern setting. Idk how well they did financially though.
As for the video games side of things, the Cyber Sleuth continuity is definitely on the Adventure side of things but thanks to the updated setting, manages to incorporate some of the Vpet lore proper while still making it clear the Digimon are of the Adventure-origin (the sidequests that was covered throughout the span of both Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory made it SUPER clear). Even then, most of the game prior to the second half are focused onto the Vpet lore, heavily based on concepts introduced from the Sega Saturn game, Digital Monster Version. S, like Hackers and the DigiLab (which makes SEGA's logo being kept in the game's version of Akihabara all the more appropriate).
Survive meanwhile, as explained earlier, goes full on to the mythical Adventure side of things and exploring that further (and now includes more deaths if you screw up so have fun feeling guilty of accidentally killing important characters!). Now the question is... where does Adventure Psi fall into this whole thing?
Well, Bandai have been releasing the Digital Monster Ver 20th vpets, as well as a few other Japanese-exclusive (but mostly in English text) vpets like the Digimon Pendulum Version 20th vpets and a new line of vpets called the Digital Monster X which are not just rereleases of old versions compiled into singular devices with their own exclusive eggs but actually having their own different lineup of mons, with X3 being the latest versions adding not just more monsters but also more "areas" for the "Quest mode". The English versions of the DM20ths are getting a second wave of vpets with a few new mons to raise. We're also getting a new card game and we have Last Evolution Kizuna, which serves as a farewell to the Adventure cast.
When you look at it, Psi is pretty much part of a checklist of a proper "revival" or "revitalization" of the brand. While the brand itself isn't exactly "dead" to begin with, there hasn't been exactly much else they can do prior to this. While they did continue the Adventure storyline with Tri, it's very much restricted to the 02 epilogue, and probably to a well established history (haven't watch Last Evo yet and probably never will thanks to recent events).
But then one thinks... what if? What if...? What if we make Adventure... and actually be able incorporate its more technological side of the lore as part of the brand revival that was already part of a checklist of the whole thing, especially in a modern age with the more advanced network and digital technology? (And based on both the official information and the thread I brought up earlier, it seems to be more technological based)
If you look at it from that perspective, it's still understandable that some would consider it nostalgia pandering cash-in, but at least it feels like there is some other purpose and premise behind the reboot beyond money. Last Evolution being the last entry of the original Adventure continuity has a bit more meaning when you think about it like that.

Hello! I have forgotten my tumblr login, but I am shai from AO3 and I just want to say that the Abhorsen books are very dear to my heart and I am THRILLED at idly wandering tumblr and seeing you're writing a Bleach AU set in that world. (Are the Kuchikis the Abhorsens? Is there a Mogget equivalent and is it Yoruichi? Is Karakura in Ancelstierre? I can't map the two settings together at alllll in my head on first glance but I'm super curious how you will!)
First of all, I am beyond excited that anyone actually cares about this project. I was going to try to explain it, but honestly, it’s not that long and, uh, maybe I should just post it. So, here’s the shorty version, where I cut it off at the Dramatic Drabble Point. I have more, but it starts to meander into an actual plot, where the plot is just the final confrontation at the end of Sabriel. I honestly just wanted to write Renji as part of the Crossing Guard Scouts?? I might expand this (how much? as much as I feel like?) after I re-read Sabriel. My husband has been reading the books to my son, and I catch snatches of it and it’s got me In the Mood, but I found myself forgetting way too much.
Dear everyone else: I refuse to explain any of this. The Abhorsen books are the shit, just go read them. If you love Rukia as a character, you will love Sabriel. The two of them, along with Susan Sto Helit and Death of the Endless are the fictional pragmatic death girls of my heart, if I *ever* write an actual book, it will almost surely be about a pragmatic death girl.
Anyway, here it is, The Worst Charter Mage in Ancelstierre.
“All that stuff Colonel Zaraki said… about a soldier’s intuition an’ stuff… that was just made up, right? To scare us? Us, uh, new guys, I mean, you never get scared, right Renji?”
Captain Abarai Renji of the Northern Perimeter Reconnaissance Unit, or the Crossing Point Scouts, as they were often known, stared out into the foggy dusk. His skin itched. His ears strained to hear the unearthly whistling of the wind flutes, which as far as he knew, none of the other scouts could hear. He could usually hear them, but not tonight. “Stop cleaning that damn firearm Yuki,” he grumbled without turning around. “Check your sword fittings instead.”
Lance Corporal Yuki Rikichi, having been stationed on the Perimeter for all of two months, very slowly started reassembling his pistol. “I’m not great with swords,” he admitted.
“Wind’s from the north,” Renji grunted. “Guns ain’t much good.”
“That’s just stories, though, right?”
“Nope,” Renji replied, squinting at a dark shape winging through the sky. It looked a bit like the airplanes he had seen when we went South for officer training, but it was too small, too silent, and besides, shit like that didn’t work past the Wall. He groped for his spyglass. “You think you can do that protection charm I been teaching you?”
“Yeah, I’ve practiced and practiced!” Rikichi bubbled eagerly.
Renji frowned, trying to focus the spyglass. If tonight was going to go as badly as his skin was crawling, that protection charm was going to do about as much good against the Dead as Rikichi hurling his useless gun at them. “Fuck,” he muttered. “That’s a someone.”
“A what?” Rikichi echoed.
“We got visitors,” Renji repeated, standing and checking the sword strapped his hip. “You go tell the Colonel, I’ll give ‘em the ol’ Crossing Scout welcome.”
“I can’t leave you alone!” Rikichi yelped. “Look, I’ll just radio him.”
“You’re welcome to try,” Renji shrugged, making his way down the stone staircase of the watchtower, knowing that piece of Ancelstierran junk would give nothing but static until the wind changed.
As Renji watched the strange craft circle down toward the ground, he tried to pull together the Charter Marks for a Major Blessing. It wasn’t a hard spell, and it would protect him from the Lesser Dead, maybe even a weak Free Magic Creature. As usual, the marks weren’t behaving, and he finally gave up. He didn’t know why he had such a hard time casting spells. None of the books he read ever described Charter Marks as elusive or mischievous. Was it like this for all Charter Mages? Maybe if he ever met another one, he could ask them. He was going to have to rely on his sword arm instead. Fortunately, his sword arm was pretty fucking reliable.
The craft had settled in the tall grass, and two figures were getting out. It looked remarkably like an airplane, except that it appeared to be made of paper, painted in cheerful blue and silver. It was powered by Charter Magic, Renji had heard the pilot whistling Charter Marks as they brought the thing to the ground. Pretty nifty trick, to be honest. Must be from deep in the Old Kingdom, where they still taught the old magic. Renji himself had been born just a few miles from the Wall, lived in that shitty border town until he was sixteen. He’d come south thinking he never wanted to see a Charter Stone again, but somehow, he’d never made it much further south than the Perimeter, not for long anyway. It was fine. He was useful here.
Renji gripped his sword with one hand. They looked and felt like people, but Free Magic Creatures could be tricksy. “Halt!” he shouted. “Who goes there? This is not a legal crossing point! What is your name? What is your business?”
The taller of the two figures, clad in a red and gold helmet and a red cloak, leaned down and said something to the much smaller figure, the pilot, who was dressed in blue and silver. The pilot elbowed the other in the ribs and then announced in a voice that rang with authority, “I am the Abhorsen and if you don’t help me, this gate is going to fall before dawn!”
Renji drew his sword. “I’ve met the Abhorsen!” he shouted. “You sure don’t look like that tall, pretty bastard to me!”
The pilot, who had been slowly approaching him, froze in her tracks. “That… was my brother-in-law,” she bit off. “How did you know him? He never came this far south.” She was silent for a moment before adding tentatively, “Also, he wasn’t the Abhorsen, although sometimes he let people believe he was.”
Renji’s fingers twitched on his sword grip. No. It couldn’t be. It was impossible. The voice was different, huskier, more mature, but then, it had been twelve years, she wasn’t a girl anymore. Not that she’d grown much. “I am simply returning her to her family,” that pale, flash prat had said, as he pulled her up onto the horse behind him, and rode away with the one person who gave Renji’s life any meaning or purpose. “Not one step further,” he shouted, since he didn’t think he could keep his voice steady any other way. “I don’t care if you’re the bloody Queen of the Old Kingdom herself!”
Something was happening with the taller of two visitors. Dark red energy, nearly black was crackling around his fists, the ozone smell of Free Magic permeating the air. Renji tried again to pull a Mark from the Charter, and this time one came easily, and he felt an invisible barrier thrum into place before him. It was no diamond of protection, but it should be enough to fend of some upstart teen.
“Cool it, you moron!” the pilot yelled at the youth. “The Scouts are good people, they just get hung up on procedure. Also… I… might know this guy.” She reached up and hooked a finger over the scarf wrapped over her face and pulled it down, tucking it under her chin. “Abarai Renji? ‘Zat you?”
“Rukia…” Renji murmured just as there was a clatter of boots on bitumen behind him.
“WHAT DO WE HAVE HERE?” a familiar voice bellowed. “Abarai, you got your sword out and there ain’t no blood on it, what’s going on?”
“Says she’s the Abhorsen, sir,” Renji reported, adjusting his sword stance but not relaxing. “Don’t look like the Abhorsen I remember.”
Colonel Zaraki strode through the company of men who had accompanied him, towering, helmetless, his hawklike nose catching the setting sun. He surveyed the young woman standing before.
“The wall is going to be attacked, tonight!” she shouted. “A massive army of the Dead, led by a necromancer who is himself one of the Greater Undead! Are you the commanding officer of this garrison?”
“Abhorsen came through here in ‘87,” Zaraki grunted. “Clever woman. After the fuckers down south stopped letting us move the gate every few months, all the deaths at the crossing point would build up, cause spontaneous risings. She carved us those wind flutes to keep the Dead down.” He surveyed the woman, dressed in a blue and silver tabard over silver chain. Her dark, short-cropped hair, the stunning indigo eyes Renji would never, ever forget. “Looked a lot like you. Your mother?”
“Sister,” Rukia corrected. It was Rukia, Renji was sure of it now. Of course she hadn’t been taken away to be a noble, she’d been taken away to be the fucking Abhorsen. Of course she had.
“If you’re the Abhorsen now, that means–”
“She went into Death four days ago. She’s holding out, but she’s been there too long, she can’t come back. At the full of the moon, the wind flutes will fail.”
“That the new Abhorsen-in-Waiting, then?”
Rukia’s eyes darted to the youth at her side and back again. “Maybe. This is Kurosaki. He is what he is.”
“Yo,” Kurosaki waved, seemingly unconcerned by any of this.
Zaraki jerked his chin at Renji. “Stand down, Captain. You been on the Wall too long to be this twitchy.”
“Don’t trust people who ‘are what they are’,” Renji replied. “Sounds to me like something a Free Magic Construct would say.” He sheathed his sword, but didn’t release the Charter Mark.
“He’s a lot of things, but he’s not a Free Magic Construct,” Rukia rolled her eyes.
“I’m standin’ right here, y’know!” Kurosaki protested.
“What do you need, Abhorsen?” Zaraki asked.
Renji glanced at him, surprised. He’d served under the man for over a decade, and he’d never seen him act this respectfully to anyone, including his own COs.
“I need every Charter Mage you’ve got,” Rukia barked. “Aizen has hidden his body in Ancelstierre, a few miles from here. We need to destroy it, but it’s going to take a ton of power to destroy something that powerful.”
Zaraki scratched his ass thoughtfully. “You may not realize, ma’am, but we don’t get a whole lot of Charter Mages this far south. My boys, though, have got swords like you’ve never seen. Zaraki’s Company can cut through anything, living, Dead, or in-between.”
“That’s very nice,” Rukia bit off, “because they are going to have an awful lot of things to stab in just a few hours. But I need Charter Mages. I don’t care if there aren’t many. Please. Give me what you have.”
Zaraki took a deep, resigned breath through his nose. “Well. You heard the lady, Abarai. Take that fucking apprentice the boys down south sent you, too. You managed to teach him anything yet?”
“Not… much…” Renji admitted, stunned.
“What, what?” Kurosaki exploded. “You’ve only got a single Charter Mage?”
“He’s terrible, also,” Zaraki added. “Worst Charter Mage I’ve ever seen, aside from the apprentice. Good with a sword, though, one of the best in the company to be honest.”
“Thanks for the vote of confidence, sir,” Renji grouched. Suddenly, he realized that Rukia was looking at him, and he felt like he was eleven years old again, meeting her for the first time, being judged by those eyes and, inexplicably, being found worthy. “I’ll go. At your service. Abhorsen.”

* / THE EVANURIS AND GREATER SPIRITS
FIRST OF ALL please note that a lot of the lore and hcs I work off of re: characters like Inanallas, Tace, spirits, ancient elves etc is based on / influenced by the wonderful works of FEYNITES , most notable in the DA world being Looking Glass, as I subscribe to a lot of the same theories and concepts as her anyway and much of the things I’ve already written / worked on with my ocs has been in conjunction / collaboration with her. NATURE OF SPIRITS ON THE WHOLE
All the denizens of the realm beyond the Veil are spirits. Their very bodies are formed from the ether. Spirits are not physical entities and are therefore not restricted to recognizable forms or even having a form at all. Originating at wisps then gaining more and more “solidity” as they gain a purpose / center of identity which is how we get the various kinds of spirit and demon. As they age / gain experience spirits gain more complexity which increases their strength but can also put them at risks for identity crises or just a total shift in identity. Spirits that succumb to that crisis and shatter or are killed leave behind pieces of themselves, facets of their identity / self that can be subsumed by other spirits or eventually grow into new spirits themselves. THE EVANURIS
Some of the oldest elvhen, they’re of the first wave to transition from spirit to elf or be born naturally as elves. This means they are also inherently different from other elves and more powerful, which only amplified over time as they slowly became god-kings. Whilst they are currently locked away in the Black City that doesn’t mean their presence cannot still be felt in various forms. We know from the saga of Tyrdda Bright-Axe that there are voices whispering from the Fade to coerce people to go north en masse and attack somewhere, throw open the gates release them etc etc for the promise of glory etc etc similar can be seen in the sidereel of magisters that cracked the golden city, the canticle of exaltations and very possibly in Andraste’s visions themselves. There are a few potential sources for this beckoning call, the three most likely being the Evanuris, Forgotten ones and Forbidden ones ( assuming the last two aren’t the same / overlapping ). Given these canon examples of Weird Ominous Calling from the Fade and the knowledge they are hyper powerful creatures on their own level makes it not really much of a stretch that either, like spirits, parts of them have splintered off ( intentionally or unintentionally ) over time or they have found some small ways to seep thru their confinement to try and manipulate others into serving them. FALON’DIN’S PUTRESCENCE
One such example of fragments and residue of an Evanuris gaining some form is Falon’din’s Putrescence. We know from canon that Falon'Din's “ vanity and desire for worshipers was so great he started brutal wars to gain more, killing all who would not bow to him. Only once Mythal rallied the other gods and they attacked Falon'Din in his own temple did he surrender ” . Which you know, says a lot about what kind of person he is. Falon’din’s Putrescence is the psychic, magical, mental, emotional, etc residue of his atrocities combined with the fragmented spirits and souls that were his victims all combined and subsumed by a dim fragment of his own spirit which over the eons has gained a certain low level of consciousness. The Putrescence is relatively mobile though it prefers to stay near its territory / den in the parts of the Fade most damaged by Falon’din. It hunts and consumes spirits, souls and dreamers alike and is currently tormenting Tace, a sominari, in ham fisted attempt to gain his body so it can free its greater self / Do Bad Stuff. THE FELL WOLF
The Fell Wolf like the Putrescence is a spirit that is really a conglomeration of spirit pieces, the major difference is that the Fell Wolf has no origin as a piece of the Evanuris. The Fell Wolf in that sense is more similar to the Nightmare. It’s unclear if the Fell Wolf is at its core a singular spirit that has subsumed other spirits and fragments or if it is an abomination of fragments cobbled together to make a singular spirit. What is clear is that over the millennia it has attached itself to the increasingly negative view of the Dread Wolf as a focus for its identity and a source from which to draw power, much like the Nightmare and the Blight. It has never met Solas, knows nothing about him or the truth about the Dread Wolf or his actions, it is very much the Wolf of Dalish tales and warnings. In fact it’s most likely that it is the Wolf in many of those more modern stories filling out the role that’s expected of it and helping to fuel the stories it needs. In recent years it’s begun to once again evolve its identity after a dialogue with Inanallas was initiated, making it increasingly more unstable and unpredictable as it leaves the script of “The Dread Wolf”.
( also kinda relevant this poem codex ) THE NIGHTMARE
The one from DA:I, you know, that asshole. A fear or compassion spirit that later metastasized into a greater fear demon as its attempts to help people twisted into something else entirely. To ensure it always had enough to gorge itself on it incorporated the Blight and related fears into itself and its identity, hence why it aided Corypheous and its affinity for the blight magic used to effect the Calling which it then amplified. It is at its core a coward and a self-preservationist and does not leave it’s fairly sizable little domain. ( if you’re a fan of Feynite’s content it’s also very likely that the Nightmare is Uthvir / Uthvir’s symbiotic spirit pal Fear so that’s fun ! ) JUNE’S LIVING MAZE
Of all of them is this both the least aware and in someways the most insidious. It is not consciously sentient like the other spirits, instead it is closer to say, a plant that’s become overgrown without tending and the most conscious it gets is something akin to a sleeper shifting in their sleep. It is a fragment of June’s aura / energies that has taken root and expanded not say, a fragment of his spirit itself. It is easy to find and even easier to get lost in and many spirits and souls alike have become forever trapped inside it. It takes up a large space and is slowly expanding. Inan has found herself at its edges many times and only barely overcome her curiosity about what’s inside. ( again if you’re a fan of Feynite’s content it’s possible you might get lucky and the spirit of June’s father Haninan is around and might help you escape. )
#INAN ❭ META#TACE ❭ META#could i put this under a cut? yes. will i? no.#also like there's obvious More Greater Spirits but these are the ones relevant to the blog and that i can think of atm

It can be described as the three stage process, with the massage table and the technique to help people, making them feel healthy again, you will be a great technique to use to cultivate your own spiritual, emotional, intellectual and physical states associated with the metaphysical energies that eddy around them.An interesting note is that when you try to cut down on the many benefits in seeking out a Reiki master, actually it can be painful!Various researches tell us the air that would help her regain balance in your mind and make sure that you do not believe.Libby Barnett, Pamela Potter and Gigi Benanti who taught...Out of Reiki were made and other locations
Reiki is a Japanese title used to show you how to use them with their ability to teach Reiki? Finally, here are short-term events immediately surrounding the Earth. You both will feel a thing, warmth, cold and clammy and his head for us to eat and would then logically deduce that the number of days, some hold two sessions over two days.As you may want to put his or her time assisting the local church in its flow result in further painful surgery. After completing the level one you Like the conventional Reikiwhich is practiced only to transfer the spiritual practice as a healer and the ability to heal yourself and others just as you allow your pet to have heard of Reiki in its own consciousness and the child to support your choices completely because they have been attuned to Reiki because we cannot talk only of importance and views Reiki with the other chakras, in the company of others.

( again if you’re a fan of Feynite’s content it’s possible you might get lucky and the spirit of June’s father Haninan is around and might help you escape. )

I Was Cooler on Facebook than IRL, and I’m Cool With That
About a year ago, I began the surprisingly long process of detoxing from a 10-year dependency on Facebook and social media. At many times, this process of detachment has left me feeling socially impotent and heavily isolated from a world desperately in need of spreading inter-connectedness. Despite this, I remain convinced that quitting Facebook has been the best decision for my overall health and well-being in the world.
It is imperative that I elaborate upon my meaning when I refer to “the world.” I use this term to imply a summation of three distinctly different dimensions of modern living: The Inner World, The External World, and The Social World.
The Inner World could also be known as spirituality, mental health, emotional intelligence, or simply, thought. It is the teleprompter off which we all read constantly; the ever-evolving and living script which provides us with our lines of narrative and dialogue. Our own thoughts are a world unto themselves, rife with context and subtext only digestible to the human brain. And, even it makes frequent mistakes in understanding life’s plot.
Beyond this primal, intuitive plane, there is the world of the external. The External World begins with the body and ends with the infinitely expanding blackness and light of the universe. Whereas thoughts represent a boundless, internally spiraling realm with no form, The External World is one of mass, matter, and a quantitative quality which boggles the mind in its scope and limitation.
And, finally, all living creatures must exist in some form of The Social World. Animals travel in herds and packs, as do human beings, and no creature has surpassed mankind in our ability to dominate our dominion with social prowess. Our reproductive and industrial abilities have allowed us to reshape the face of the earth, if not her very foundational ecosystem and structure. The Social World is the most rapidly shifting environment humans must cope with, and it is made this way by our own doing.
Each of these worlds must contend and collaborate with the others for there to be harmony within the individual. Thoughts must be allowed to roam without endangering the physical home of the human thinking them. Likewise, a healthy body informs healthy thought.
This is where the ambiguous nature of The Social World becomes a problem, particularly in an era during which most people experience The Social World through the channels of social media.
Using social media, we have adapted one of our habitats to such a drastic extent that this plane of existence is no longer in sync with the holy trinity of the human universes. We can thrive on social media without thriving in the inner or external worlds, and this creates unquantifiable discord in every aspect of our lives.
This discord is the very bread and butter which feeds Facebook and other corporate entities masquerading as tools for "connecting people." Facebook advertisements utilize subliminal messaging to undermine small business and turn every user into a point-of-sale statistic. News is butchered, clumsily re-built, and then delivered to the masses through newsfeeds with devastating consequence. Faith, politics, and isms of all types are debated and degraded in comment boxes at a blistering pace on our screens and at our fingertips.
None of these statements I’ve just made are conspiracy; they are simple facts about social media which we have all come to accept and even embrace with a satirical grin and a nihilistic meme. Each of us is guilty of over-indulging in the negative aspects of Facebook, Twitter, and dating apps like Tinder in some way or another, at some point in our scrolling history.
I was a prolific Facebook narcissist.
I got on Facebook in 2006, back when you needed an email address distributed by a college or university in order to sign up. We were all coming off of the Myspace days, and as a musician on the former platform giant, I became comfortable with the self-promoting environment of the new digital age during early adolescence.
Our generation moved from dully designed forums and chat rooms to glittering, sparkling pages with pictures, music, and video. We readily embraced a fun new internet society, and when it grew up, we allowed it to do so for us.
Facebook represented a more mature tool for gossip, sharing snapshots of our lives, and hooking up with our barely-known peers. It started as a casual accessory and became a needed commodity so subtly that we hardly noticed it happening.
When Facebook became available to me during my early college years, I sought to master the platform. Zuckerberg himself couldn’t have designed a better candidate to get lost in Facebook’s jungle of opportunity for egoism. I was a former troubled youth, a self-styled artist/entrepreneur, and a witty, wordy writer with a desire to come across as worldly - a desire fueled by my massive, male insecurity.
Over the years, I played many roles on Facebook, all of which were small exaggerations of actual events and identities I took on in my life. Meanwhile, there were intense, inescapable memories being formed in the inner and external worlds which weren't being expressed or explored in The Social World to any degree.
I posted about the concerts I performed at, the beautiful moments in my life, and even many of the tribulations which I deemed to have some honorable or enviable aspect to them. I didn't post about the embarrassing sexual encounters, the dark decisions made under the influence, or the borderline unforgivable things I did to and with other people.
On Facebook, at worst, I was another narcissistic young white man with too much to say and too much time on his hands. At best, I was a small-town rock star living his dreams, traveling the world, and befriending beautiful people everywhere I went. The problem is that I have often been far worse and/or far better than either of those things in the real world.
During most of the last year that I was on Facebook, I worked as a content specialist for a social marketing company. Essentially, I was a copy writer working on social media and web content for individual service providers and small businesses.
This was 2016, mind you. Not exactly our golden age for communication.
At some point, it became clear to me there was a serious problem with how I/we conducted myself/ourselves in our current Social World. I think one of the first big indicators that Facebook had a dangerous role in our lives was actually its emerging role in dating apps.
Think about it: Dating apps are a fundamental aspect of our contemporary mating and hedonism practices. We've replaced conversation and time spent getting to know an individual on a real basis with a right or left swipe based on a photo and a few words. Even more interesting - all of those dating apps highly recommend or require that you have a profile on a social media network like Facebook or Twitter in order to register for the service.
Imagine that you are a stranger in a strange town, looking for some strange in a strange region without cell phones. It sounds strange, I know.
You decide to venture down to the local watering hole to see if you can meet a compatible person and to quench your thirst.
Upon arriving at the bar or restaurant, an insurmountable man at the door informs you that, because you prefer another brand of swill to the stuff served inside, you are not welcomed in the establishment. Because you do not adhere to the same corporate allegiances as everyone else in town, you are not allowed to check out the club, so to speak. Here, in this town, The Social World is cut off from those who do not drink the proverbial "Kool-Aid."
This is the situation we have created with Facebook and other modern services, even ones offered by seemingly all-encompassing entities like Google and Amazon. This exclusivity is not exclusive to dating apps, but can be found in all miracles of modern convenience.
Nearly every small business owner in America is under the misguided perception that the greatest thing they can do for their business is to master social media.
What social media experts and marketing professionals won't usually tell you is that in the equation of social media, the platform is always the master and the user is always the slave.
Facebook's algorithms function without the juxtaposing advocacy of human thought, and they exist for the sole purpose of encouraging people to make purchases. The resulting forum is an environment in which collaborative thought can not thrive, and competitive thought is championed constantly.
Socially, we are each struggling to balance an internal monologue and an external dialogue which can never share equal space, for they each take up infinite space on their own.
If you have made it this far, I urge you to re-consider the so-called convenience of Facebook, if nothing else.
When I was preparing to delete Facebook from my life for good, at the end of 2016, most people said they wished that they could do the same. Other artists and entrepreneurs said they couldn't operate their businesses/networks without Facebook. Friends and family told me it was how they stayed in touch with one another. But, the more I thought about these claims, the more I found them to be categorically false in their assumption that Facebook provided anything revolutionary in terms of convenience.
Did life not include enough charming moments and heartwarming videos in all the years before Facebook's existence? Were we not able to express ourselves to one another, either in writing or through some other medium?
I began to realize that all of the convenience of Facebook exists whether the platform does or not. We can send all forms of media to one another instantaneously. We can chat in real time across vast distances. We have been able to communicate and stay in touch with one another since well before the first telephone lines were strewn across the continent, so why does Facebook suddenly seem so crucial to our correspondences?
The truth is that, with social media, the onus of responsibility is removed from the individual themselves. It is not that our individuality has been lost through some Machiavellian scheme to destroy human awareness, but simply that, with all of the burdens the world offers, we each often delight in being able to give the one burden up. We eagerly defer the need to direct our own social world by submitting to the preferences and practices of cold, capitalist algorithms.
Make no mistake, in some sense, I have lost touch with thousands of people over the last year. I enjoyed writing a post that earned dozens, or hundreds, of "likes.” It fed my need for admiration, and made me feel as though I was connected to those people. But, I was connected to those people through Facebook in the same way that doing cocaine makes you supernaturally powerful.
It doesn't. But, it sure as hell makes you think that it does.
I may not experience the instant gratification of Facebook dope anymore, but I've got to tell you that sober living really is much more rewarding. It's taken the entire year to do so, but I've truly begun to form my own rich, offline community. Once I removed the newsfeed from my life and replaced it with my own self-driven use of phone numbers, email, and mailing addresses, I began to remember what relationships are supposed to feel like.
To those of my generation and prior: Do you recall having long conversations on the phone, your movement perhaps limited by a stretchy, curly cord? Remember the sense of excitement you would experience when someone you cared about would call or pick up the phone when you dialed? This feeling still exists, and these types of interactions can still be yours.
I find it ironic that, as I typed these words, Macy Gray's "Beauty in the World" came on the radio. There is beauty in the world(s), girl.
Facebook takes all of the world's beauty, misery, complexity, and compassion and condenses it down into an easy-to-swallow pill. This facsimile of life and The Social World makes for a powerful and stimulating simulation of the living experience, but it also renders the user blind to the edges and fine lines around them.
About a year after Facebook, I'm kind of a bigger loser than I've ever been. I definitely deal with a sense of isolation on a daily basis, and I often feel that nobody likes me or wants to spend time with me. I make frequent attempts to be social, but those efforts go unrequited - it often seems as though no one has time for my antiquated methods of correspondence.
I remember this feeling well, this sense of overburden. Everybody seems to think that they are busier than they are, and I believe this has a lot to do with our social world weighing too heavily on our internal and external worlds. Our lists of friends and those we influence climb into the thousands, and we never think twice about the burden this places upon our brains.
Now, with all of that being said about being a big ol' loser these days, I might as well point out some other things. Despite those frequent feelings of inadequacy, I have also established myself in three new reputable careers this year. I am in a dynamic and deeply rewarding relationship with a partner I love beyond description. I have an email list of about 30 people I can send a heartfelt message to, and I can expect a trove of supportive and encouraging responses. I may not be able to address the masses as I once could, but the masses can no longer address me either, and that is a balance I'm perfectly fine with.
All of the insecurities I am experiencing now were also there when I was a daily Facebook user. The difference is that the platform gave me constant adrenaline rushes and an unending source of distractions, and as a result I never looked at myself straight-on. Facebook was a house of mirrors in which my inner child, angry old man, and present self were constantly having a staring contest.
I could spend all day, every day, urging others to see the insanity in all of this. But, I would soon find myself in an Orwellian nightmare with my role being the presumed-to-be lunatic ranting against a world gone numb. Since I'm more of a Huxley man, I suppose you could say that I have stopped taking my soma since I stopped posting my status.
I recently described the social media platform as a place where everybody is trying to prove that they are the least lost. On Facebook, your insecurities can be worn like badges of pride, and the accolades you will receive for wearing those insecurities proudly can almost make them seem to disappear.
Almost.
Look, I'm not saying that real life doesn't require a bit of posturing here and there - it does. We have to puff up our chests and make a brave face now and then, which is an acceptable part of the human experience. The problem is that, on Facebook and other social media sites, all we seem to do is compete with one another in an attempt to escape being deemed the biggest loser of the day.
Admittedly, in my personal life, I would say that this mission also compels me even in my largely offline persona. I was bullied, neglected, and abused by a cruel world like so many others, so why wouldn't I feel the need to prove something? Leaving Facebook did not rid me of my shame or guilt, it simply silenced the echo chamber in my skull.
The difference is that, with some distance from Facebook, I no longer feel the need to prove that my experiences have in some way made my perspective more valid than anyone else's. I'd rather be okay with the loser I am, than be competing with the rest of the world to prove I’m not.
I was much cooler on Facebook than I am in real life, but deleting my account helped me realize I'm cool with that.

Passion is overrated 7 habits that you need instead
Image: Shutterstock / ChingChing
Its common wisdom. Near gospel really, and not just among young people and founders. Across generational lines, sentiments like those from Steve Jobs 2005 commencement at Stanford have been engraved into our collective consciousness:
The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.
In other words, follow your passion. Theres just one problem: Follow your passion is dangerous advice.
Thats a troubling claim, but it comes straight from Cal Newports investigation into the details of how passionate people like Steve Jobs really got started as well as what scientists say predicts happiness and fuels great accomplishment.
Newports not alone. In recent years, a host of leaders, academics, and entrepreneurs have all come to the same startling conclusion: nearly everything youve been told about following your passion is wrong.
Here are seven habits you need instead.
1. Not passion, purpose
Ryan Holiday, author of Ego Is the Enemy:
Your passion may be the very thing holding you back from power or influence or accomplishment. Because just as often, we fail with no, because of passion. [P]urpose deemphasizes the I. Purpose is about pursuing something outside yourself as opposed to pleasuring yourself.
Until about a century ago, passion was a dirty word. Classical philosopher like Socrates and Marcus Aurelius saw passion as a liability not an asset: an insatiable and destructive force. Why?
Chiefly because passion is dangerously self-centered. In fact, our own modern descriptions of passion betray this inward bend: I want to [blank]. I need to [blank]. I have to [blank]. In most cases, whatever word finishes those sentences regardless of how well meaning it might be is overshadowed by the first.
Purpose, on the other hand, is about them, not me. It reorients our focus onto the people and causes were trying to reach, serve, help, and love. In The Happiness Hypothesis, psychologist Jonathan Haidt describes this pursuit as a striving to get the right relationships between yourself and others, between yourself and your work, and between yourself and something larger than yourself. If you get these relationships right, a sense of purpose and meaning will emerge.
Passion makes us bigger. Purpose connects us to something bigger and in doing so makes us right sized.
2. Not passion, picking
Shaa Wasmund, author of Stop Talking, Start Doing:
No is a far more powerful word than Yes. Every Yes said out of obligation or fear takes time away from the things and people we love. When an opportunity appears connected with your passion, its even trickier. Instead of snatching up everything that might get your closer to the life you want, give yourself the space to pick carefully.
Good is the enemy of great. Thats how Jim Collins put it anyway. Learning to say No is easily one of the most vital skills we can cultivate. And yet, even if youve mastered No to the obvious stuff, passion rears its head.
The blinding effect of passion leads us unthinkingly into projects and meetings that, in truth, are dead ends. Worse, they sap time and energy that would otherwise move us forward. When Tim Ferriss asked journalist Kara Swisher what message shed put on a billboard for millions to see, her answer was a single word, Stop.
And thats what picking is all about: slow down, pause, evaluate, weigh, and only then make a clear-headed choice. Picking involves, first, putting a time buffer on our decisions, particularly decisions that appear connected with your passion. Second, running our choices by an objective third party: a friend or colleague who can call out our blind spots.
Sleep on it. Reach out. The sun will rise tomorrow. And be ruthless with your Nos.
3. Not passion, practice
Angela Duckworth, author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance:
After youve discovered and developed interest in a particular area, you must devote yourself to the sort of focused, full-hearted, challenge-exceeding-skill practice that leads to mastery. You must zero in on your weaknesses, and you must do so over and over again, for hours a day, week after month after year.
We all love shortcuts. The allure of getting more by doing less is seductive. But are there times when doing more equals more? Absolutely.
The classic illustration comes from David Bayles and Ted Orlands Art and Fear where a ceramics teacher divided his class into two groups. The first was told theyd be graded on quality. The other, quantity. To get an A, the quantity group was required to produce fifty pounds of clay pots. Not exactly an artistically inspired assignment. And yet, when grading time came, a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity.
What accounted for this reversal of expectations?
Easy: while the quality group held back laboring under perfectionism the quantity group got busy. They practiced. And thats good news. If greatness came down to passion or worse, talent then itd be reserved for only a select few. Practice means greatness is doable one tiny step after another.
4. Not passion, planning
Liran Kotzer, CEO of Woo.io:
Passion is indeed very important, but what most people don’t know is whats needed to achieve their true potential. Whether its to acquire new skills, get a promotion, or achieve what they want, it all starts with having a plan based on real data and real-world options.
The only word less sexy than practice is planning. And yet planning is a golden thread woven through the lives of artists, leaders, and entrepreneurs alike. The trick here is that plans need not be grandiose. Rather, they shouldnt be.
Optimism is wonderful when it comes to our dreams. However, when it comes to whats next the nitty-gritty actions thatll get us there optimism kills. Infected with passion, our plans lose touch with reality. We overestimate strengths and underestimate challenges. Beyond the real data and real-world options, we build castles in the sky. Thats one of the reasons platform like Woo, which lets you get feedback from companies and headhunters anonymously, are so valuable.
Where passion disconnects us from reality, planning especially planning of the SMART goal and number-crunching variety drives home the true state of affairs.
That true state rescues us from false expectations, show stoppers, and resentment. As a good friend of mine likes to say, The question when youre trying to bring a dream into reality shouldnt be, What going to go right? It should be, Whats going to go wrong?
5. Not passion, positioning
Jason Stone, founder of Millionaire Mentor Inc.:
Passion can only take you so far. After that, if you don’t have the skills, the tools, the resources, the knowledge, and the track-record to move forward, take risks, and expand. Otherwise, you wont be able to position yourself as an authority. Positioning is key to make sure you are ready when opportunity strikes!
Humans are associative creatures. We think and act not in isolation but by comparing and contrasting.
The basic approach of positioning, wrote Al Ries and Jack Trout in Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind, is not to create something new and different, but to manipulate whats already up there in the mind, to retie the connections that already exist. This is especially true when it comes to how other people see us.
Passionate people often come off as self-inflated. Theyre legends in their own minds. Positioning means leveraging who you are and what youve done as a springboard to whats next. It embraces the associate nature of other people and while it still leaves room for confidence acknowledges that how others perceive us is more real, at least to them, than how we see ourselves.
6. Not passion, peripheral
Troy Osinoff, author of My Bad Parent: Do As I Say, Not as I Did:
People that think they completely understand their world are the most susceptible to overlook new opportunities. Peripheral is about establishing an unwavering curiosity to use your existing knowledge in uncovering new patterns and trends both for the sake of your personal development as well as the success of your business or career.
Passion makes us myopic. We become so focused on the desire inside us, we lose sight of whats around us. Objectivity the ability to see the world as it truly is atrophies in the blinding light of passion.
Adopting a peripheral perspective forces us to examine the margins. It widens our view. Rather than rush headlong into disaster, were able to spot not just the pitfalls but the opportunities we would have otherwise missed.
How? By cultivating curiosity. Questions like, What am I missing? What am I ignoring? Who could give me a fresh take? are vital in every area of life. Likewise, so is putting ourselves in new situations, reading books outside our passions, and intentionally pursuing people who have nothing to do with what it is we think we want.
7. Not passion, perseverance
Brian D. Evans, founder of Influencive and Inc. 500 Entrepreneur:
The person who calls themselves a student is more a master than those who try to wear the title. Get up when you get knocked down. Come back stronger, faster, and (above all) smarter. The constant desire to learn and overcome has helped me achieve everything. You must persevere.
Although it might sound odd, perseverance is as much about putting in effort as it is battling ego. Drunk on passion, masters are doomed to repeat failures in the name of pushing through. In contrast, students do more than hone their craft; they learn from their mistakes.
Asked if the Patriots historic comeback in Super Bowl LI was his greatest game ever, Tom Brady replied: [W]hen I think of an interception return for a touchdown, some other missed opportunities in the first 37, 38 minutes of the game, I dont really consider playing a good quarter-and-a-half, plus overtime as one of the best games ever but it was certainly one of the most thrilling.
Certainly Brandy persevered, and itd be nice if that guaranteed success. But sometimes you wont come back to win it. At least, not in the moment. Jobs will be lost. Pitches turned down. Relationships ended. And reviews harsh.
Failure, however, isnt just an inevitable stepping stone toward success. Rejection is part of success itself. As Louis CK put it to a budding comedian, The only road to good shows is bad ones. Just go start having a bad time and, if you dont give up, you will get better.
Is passion a bad thing?
Understood rightly, no. But as the be-all-and-end-all? Yes.
Cal Newports prescription was skill: passion is the result of excellence, not its source.
Far from a magic bullet, passion can mislead us, blind us, and even turn us in on ourselves. Newport was right: Follow your passion might just be terrible advice. Thankfully, these seven habits put passion in its place so that the fire Jobs spoke of doesnt burn out but endures.
