Sweet & Sour Legacy Challenge - Sims 3
Created by Simphora & Gabrielle-kl
Hey guys! Surprise, surprise. Me and Gabby did a little something.. we created a Sims 3 challenge! Woot-woot! This is our very first time creating a challenge together. We had such a blast. I’d like say this challenge is fun and unique. We put our FOOT into making this because us Sims 3 simmers are in desperate need of more challenges. Also, feel free to check out Gabby’s amazing challenge called, Not Your Average Legacy Challenge.
The Sweet & Sour Legacy Challenge is a six generation legacy challenge inspired by fruits. These fruits have a sweet and sour aesthetic for each generation. For example, the sweet fruit generations are compassionate and up-beat. Meanwhile, there’s a little twist with the sour fruit generations because it’s more pessimistic and chaotic. All-in-all, if you're a simmer that is looking for a fruit themed and drama fulfilled legacy challenge, this is a challenge for you!
If you’re interested in doing this challenge, please feel free to tag us: @simphoraa @gabrielle-kl or #sweet&sourlegacy. We would love to see your progress and gameplay!
R U L E S:
You must follow each generation in chronological order.
It is recommend that you use all of the provided traits.
If you do not have a certain Sims 3 expansion pack that is related to the traits, careers, or goals, you can make adjustments.
The aesthetic color/colours for each generation is optional.
Before moving on to the next generation, you must complete all of the required goals.
DO NOT use any money cheat codes (ex: motherload, kaching, or rosebud).
Tumblr media
Generation #1 - Watermelon: One in a Melon
You like to see yourself as the main character, and you think that everyone that comes in contact with you thinks so too.
Everyone absolutely loves you! Or do they? As unique as you are, you want to be a famous actor or actress. Soon enough Hollywood would be signing your name on everything! You find yourself chilling with A-list celebrities and even date a few. You have everything you could ever want! No one can ruin this for you, except maybe yourself.
Get started: Live in a small starter house or apartment. Purchase your basic necessities to survive, and progressively buy more necessities once you start earning some simoleons. Good luck!
Starting simoleons - §1,200
Traits - Charismatic, Dramatic, Snob, Star Quality, and Workaholic
Career - Film
Lifetime Wish - Superstar Actor
Aesthetic Color/Colour
Goals:
Become a five-star celebrity
Ruin your reputation 2 times, make your life a little scandalous! (ex: get publicly disgraced)
Master the Charismatic skill
Reach level 10 in the Film Career (choose the actor branch)
Have 2 close friends
Host a meet & greet once a week (ex: sign autographs and take pictures with fans)
Fall in love with one of your fans
Have as many kids as you want
Tumblr media
Generation #2 - Lemon: When life gives you lemons.. you have to deal with some sour sh*t!
Sigh! Your childhood was already enough as it was with being a nepotistic child, but now there’s even more shenanigans.
Apart from hiding in your parents' shadows and not being the main focus when it comes to the paparazzi. You carry a nice and sweet persona on the outside. Those who were fortunate enough to have a conversation with you say your personality is like, “stuffing their mouths with a bunch of sour candy”, but you didn’t hear that from me. Just know, it’s okay to loosen up a bit. You do not always need to leave a bitter taste in one’s mouth.
In the course of time, you finally meet someone and insert yourself into their life. Love makes you do some silly things. You want to help them with their unlawful issues because you think that you can help them figure things out and get their life back on track. Realistically speaking, you would never think of laying your eyes on someone with a completely different personality than yours and a terrible outlook on life. Oh boy! You're in for a nice treat.
Traits - Bookworm, Grumpy, Hopeless Romantic, No sense of humor, and Perceptive
Career - Journalism or Private Investigator
Lifetime Wish - Star News Anchor or Pervasive Private Eye
Aesthetic Color/Colour
Goals:
Get romantically involved with a criminal
Be disliked by a few sims. Having “friends” isn’t your thing because people disappoint you
Master the Writing or Logic skill
Reach level 5 in the Journalism or Private Investigator Career, and then quit or get fired
Have 1 failed marriage
Have only 1 child
Have a bad relationship with your child
Find a hobby or skill, and make a source of income out of it
Have a rebound relationship with someone
C H O I C E:
This generation has a choice for you to make. These are choices that you could build off of and integrate into your storyline.
Hmm, it looks like you have found love again. Are you genuinely happy this time? You may be a little traumatized from the last relationship. Just remember, everyone isn’t the same. This rebound relationship could be turning into something really serious. There may even be wedding bells in your future. Do you want to give marriage a second chance or stay in the “dating” stage?
Tumblr media
Generation #3 - Strawberry: You’re the sweetest pick of the patch!
Everyone loves you, at least this time. Nobody is actually lying. Good job! Everyone finds you to be the sweetest sim in the patch. And, trust me, you will most definitely take full advantage of all this attention. You mainly use it for a good cause. You love power, but not in an evil kind of way. You want to use that power to help those in need.
You attend University in hopes of being the future president of the free world and eventually start raising a happy family that is way better than how your current family dynamic is right now. I don’t really know anything, but deep down you want to be better than your parents because you have a weird feeling that they were doing some shady things before you were born.
Traits - Friendly, Family-Oriented, Good, Irresistible, and Schmoozer
Career - Political
Lifetime Wish - Leader of the Free World
Aesthetic Color/Colour
Goals:
Fix your relationship with your parent
Maintain A’s in school and even aim to become an honor/honour roll student (child-teen)
In high school, join the debate club
Enroll into University and major in Communications
Host a rant/protest once a week
Donate to a charity once in a while
Join a Social Group (Nerd, Rebel, or Jock)
Throw a party every weekend in Sims University
Earn the Communications degree
Reach level 10 in the Political Career
Be a good role model as a parent and a faithful spouse
Have about 2-4 kids
Retire from the Political Career once an elder
Tumblr media
Generation #4 - Green Apple: One bad apple doesn’t spoil the whole bunch..
You want to find love just like how your parents have it. You can’t seem to find someone that fits the description of your dream partner. All of your attempts seem to fall flat. Why? You’re not that bad of a person. You’re just exploring a bit. You may be a little picky, but everyone has their own personal preferences within a person. Right? Hmm.. maybe you're just picking the wrong kind of sims? Do not give up. Keep putting yourself out there until you find the one. Just do not get yourself caught up. They say the world is one tiny place..
Traits - Commitment Issues, Flirty, Over-emotional, Social Butterfly, and Unlucky
Career - Any self-employed career
Lifetime Wish - Heartbreaker
Aesthetic Color/Colour
Goals:
Maintain a good relationship with your parents
Create an Online Dating Profile
Go out on a date every weekend
Have 10 failed relationships (get caught cheating or initiate a break-up)
Have an accidental baby from a hook-up
Avoid/Lose contact with some of your friends. You forgot about them. You’re too “caught up” in love
Start a Personal Blog
Post daily blogs about your life
Reach level 7 in Social Networking skill
Attempt to meet someone through the Sim Finder App
C H O I C E:
This generation has a choice for you to make. These are choices that you could build off of and integrate into your storyline.
Good news! It looks like you may have found the sim of your dreams through your blog. Out of all those fishes in the sea, it only took ten different sims to find them. Do you try to fix your reputation, and finally settle down or continue to be a.. heartbreaker?
Tumblr media
Generation #5 - Blueberry: Life is very sweet, and you are naturally sweet
Being generous and compassionate is one thing, but doing it all the time, even to the sims that do not deserve it.. gets draining. You kept it pushing. Hey, even I am surprised you lasted this long. Everyone makes mistakes. Although, some people are just unforgivable. It turns out you're the type of sim that doesn’t hold others' mistakes against them forever because holding grudges is immature.
You’ve studied hard to be in a career that has long tiresome hours where you're barely at home, and if you think you got lucky in some extra lounge time – Oh! There goes your alarm, it’s time to clock in! Unfortunately, since you're never home, some things just seem to slip under the rug. Only so much can be slipping through the cracks for you to be completely oblivious. Hmm, I wonder how long this has been going on for? I could never trust someone again after that stunt. Could you?
Traits - Ambitious, Eco-Friendly, Friendly, Genius, and Loves the Outdoors
Career - Science
Lifetime Wish - Become a Creature-Robot Cross Breeder or Renaissance Sim
Aesthetic Color/Colour
Goals:
Have your sim live the Eco-friendly lifestyle (ex: own a bicycle, eat organic food, recycle, etc)
Start a garden
Fish once a day
Catch/Collect 5 different uncommon or rare type of fishes
Master the Gardening, Handiness, and Fishing skill
Grow a plantsim or create a small farm (ex: raise chickens, cows, horses, etc) [PICK ONE]
Fall in love with one of your co-workers
Once married, make your Spouse have 2 affairs and you must stay with them
Try repairing your marriage with your spouse, but only if you catch them cheating
Tumblr media
Generation #6 - Grapefruit: Don’t be such a sour puss!
Let’s be realistic here. You need to get your life together. I’m sorry. I know this is something you do not want to hear, but ya need to put a pep in your step and do something with yourself. Pronto!
You find it quite unfair how other sims around you get to go on fancy trips, have nice cars, live in mansions or high-rise buildings, and afford expensive meals. You wonder to yourself how one can achieve all these kind of lifestyles. Dangerous choices can lead to serious consequences, but it’ll never stop you. I would say you like to live your life on the edge. So, what if you leave a place with five different things that do not belong to you? Any who --- hey, wait a minute... since when did your neighbor/neighbour get such a nice car? Oh my god! Did they seriously leave their keys in the slot like that? Someone could just steal it. It is a really nice car though. I think I might take it for a little spin around the block.. Finders keepers, losers weepers!
Traits - Athletic, Childish, Hot-headed, Kleptomaniac, and Night-owl
Career - Criminal
Lifetime Wish - Possession is Nine Tenths of the Law
Aesthetic Color/Colour
Goals:
Steal 3 items a day
Possess §50,000 worth of stolen items (do not sell anything)
Befriend your ALL of your neighbors/neighbours. No one knows what you do in your free time. You could get some valuable goodies from them, wink wink
Get arrested
Work out 3 times a week at the community Gym
Master the Athletic skill
Live in a house worth over §100,000
Scuffle with someone once a week
Adopt a child
C H O I C E:
This generation has a choice for you to make. These are choices that you could build off of and integrate into your storyline.
Uh-oh, there’s a new addition to the family. Now, you have a lot of responsibility on your hands. This is very important to you. Is this the perfect time to finally get your life together by quitting your job as a Criminal and find a new job? Or, remain a Criminal, but hide it? This has been your lifestyle for a while. Just remember that this could also make you look like a “bad parent” because children can be easily influenced.
If you have made it to the end of this challenge, we want to thank you so much for participating and completing it. Let us know what you think as well!

Oh God the episode was all over the place. And I remember once again why I couldn't love the show as a whole. Yabani is suffering from a chronic disease. They write an excellent conflict, then it turns out that it is actually not that important. This rant is not about Asi and Alaz btw. It's more about familial love. Asi and Alaz, they're still my babies, but I am really tired of not seeing any other good plots. And don't get me even started on the weak crime & cop plot line. The amount of second-hand embarrassment I feel about that...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You are not dead."
Yaman and Alaz just hugged and thanks to the actor playing Alaz I could feel something. The script was lacking and if this was how you solved your conflict, just joking and hugging, then don't ever write something so dramatic again. They did not even confront each other. Like, this built up went in vain, can you believe it?
They shouldn't have left Soysalan house for the next three months after this.
Tumblr media
And this.
They are THAT COUPLE who gives you everything you could ask for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hands down he is the most interesting character and has the best character development arc in the show. I used to roll my eyes every time he appeared but now he is my favorite. I think he is also the writers' favorite because he was great in this episode.
His grief was consistent and visible. He was disgusted at the idea that one could sacrifice a child's life. He was too desparate that he threatened his childhood friend with a knife. He was crazy enough to get himself caught. He was so sad to hear Asi hated him and helplessly begged her not to. He was worried to death that Asi couldn't make it but tried so hard not to show his fear. He heard for the first time in his life that someone he loved loved him back finally. (YEAH WE GOT "I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU TOO", DON'T TOUCH ME I AM STILL NOT OKAY) He looked like a child when he saw his brother was alive.
I mean, he might be a mess but somehow checks all the boxes, do you understand me?

For "Being Known" (Helena writer, Myka actress): 2 and 3, 6 and/or 7 (whichever you like better, or both), and 9!
Ah, thank you! My longest Bering and Wells fic to date :D
Tumblr media
Moodboard & header for the fic, and Here's the ask meme
2. How did you come up with the idea?
It was part of a gift exchange, and my giftee had asked for a pop culture AU, with some fusion prompts for fandoms I didn't know very well - so instead of trying to find out enough about eg Buffy the Vampire Slayer to write a fic in that world, I asked whether a celebrity AU would work, and here we are!
3. Did the idea change at all by the time the fic was complete?
I expanded my initial idea a lot - adding Steve, Leena, Artie, Caturanga, Jane and Amanda, I'm pretty sure initially it was just supposed to be HG and Myka with side characters Claudia and Pete. I don't remember exactly what the plan was and what came later, apart from having the idea of Helena's conflict about wanting to remain anonymous while being passionate about something that could bring her a lot of fame early on...I'll have to see whether I still have my initial draft somewhere and I can add it at the end of the post, I tend to write in messages on telegram and copy paste them to an ao3 draft or word doc once I start editing, so the messages should still be the original first draft.
I think I was unsure whether or not I should add an AU-ified Christina related backstory and work that into part of the reason for Helena's reluctance over fame, I had several ideas about her own childhood, her knowing a child something happened to, or actually writing Christina into her backstory... I went back and forth between Christina being a child star and Helena herself being one, I think in the end I just made Helena one because it worked better for the story though I would have liked to have more Christina backstory, but oh well, kill your darlings.
6. How did you decide what tense and POV(s)to use? / 7. How did you decide what character(s) would narrate the fic?
Honestly, I rarely decide that kind of thing consciously - I guess if you want to write something commercially there are lots of things to consider, but I write for fun and I'll write wherever my ideas bring me. Sometimes I'll notice a scene works better from a different POV and I change it, but usually it just happens one way and then it's fine to leave it as is
In this case I think I immediately knew it would mainly be Helena's POV because it's really her story I wanted to tell.
9. Did you get stuck at any point? How did you get past that?
Claudia! Hah, I mean I didn't get stuck on her, but that I used her to get past difficult scenes, giving Helena a much needed push! Especially near the end, when it comes to Helena accepting the possibility of a relationship between her and Myka.
Thank you so much for the ask! This was fun to talk about :)
.
This is my draft for the fic, the way it was written (in a messenger chat with just myself in it, as I start most fics) in one go, before making any edits at all!
You'll notice a lot of 'xx' markers - because there aren't really any words with that, it's easy to search a text for that later on, so whenever I know I still need to fix something - add a sentence, translate a word, edit bullet points into paragraph, add entire scenes - I write XX to mark it for later.
wip bering and wells author actress AU for anandabrat
Working title The Perfect Warrior
HG (former child actor turned?) writer under pseudonym hiding from fame (bc burned out from kid fame?), slowly getting back into acting, does improv for fun
Myka either star there to help 'learning' amateur actors for xxkomparsen? Or she's a newcomer and HG is back on film?
Claudia's HG's friend, Pete Myka's
ohhh what about Helena's book being verfilmt & Myka main role, HG making sure she won't be overwhelmed..

xxflashback seven months prior
"H.G., I'm coming in!"
Helena covers her head with a pillow when she hears Claudia Donovan's shouting from the backyard before a well-aimed kick against the old garden door has it fling open.
"Breaking and entering, really?" Helena's muffled voice lets Claudia know where she is. "I would have thought that petty crime is belowxx you."
"Come oooon," Claudia pulls the pillow from her face and Helena is left squinting at the sudden light. "We're going out! A friend of mine has a gallery opening, and there's bound to be a crowd of interesting people there!"
"I can't," Helena grouches. "I have to write, I still haven't finished either of those silly sequels my agents want me to work on."
"Riiight," Claudia nods, juggling the pillow between her hands. "Because that's what you were doing right now. Writing."
"Oh, cut the sarcasm." Helena growls. She is in a bad enough mood without Claudia butting in and making it worse.
"Alright then." Instead of backing down, Claudia throws the pillow onto the bed and, hands on her hips, stares Helena down. "I'll speak xxklartext. You're wasting away here, H.G.! You hate the books you're supposed to write, you refuse to write anything else either, you haven't seen any of our friends in months and now you're getting your groceries delivered so you don't even have to leave the house? That's the final straw!"
"Who snitched on me," Helena xx Leena?sbcanonordontmention
"It'll be good for you," Claudia insists. "You can dazzle everyone with your Wikipedia brain, and maybe you'll meet a xxverleger who wants to publish one of your weirder novellas. Come on, get up. get up, if not for yourself then do it for me because there's no way I'll go schmooze with the rich and famous all on my own!"
"I still cannot believe you managed to talk me into this," Helena sighs, looking at the xx and bustle around her.
"I'm up, I'm up," Helena sighs and avoidsxxausweichen Claudia's attempt to pull her from the bed by sitting up. "Alright, what exactly is this opening we're going to?"
...
Laughing, herxxfriend Claudia bumps their elbows together. "You better believe it, there's no getting out of it now! And this will be good for you! xx I'm happy for you, H.G., this is a dream come true!" She twirls around without missing a step, taking it all in.
"The fact that it makes you xxgoodposition takes no part in it, I'm sure." Helena deflects. She doesn't want to admit that Claudia is right and she is thrilled to have her characters coming to life for the big screen - nor does she want it known that, despite all the negotiations and concessions on side of the production studio, she is still afraid that she won't recognise the world she created once the movie is done. Will they do justice to the worlds of trees and cogwheels, to the unseeing creator and the warrior with the unruly hair? Will they listen to Helena when she has suggestions, will the stick to the details from the book, will it even be possible to transfer it to the new medium?
This and more goes through Helena's mind as she lets Claudia drag her along over the big parking lot and storage area, past trucks with equipment and the xxvans for cast and crew towards the xxhall.
first time sees Myka - the perfect xxcharactername warrior.
xx looks after her xx her hair xx in the wind, a sharp edge to her big brown eyes that negates anything childish about their shape, xx stepping out of the camper
xx C hey, we're not here to flirt! Can't believe I need to say that to you, you're like, the least likely person xx xx pretty girl
xx not what - I mean yes beautiful, but not what that wasabout -
xx oh /beauuutiful
xx shut up Donovan
xx later sees Myka in makeup all *sideeye* what did you do to my xxcharactername
argument - need makeup! Looks silly on camera without, different than irl!
HG: well if so, just makeup that makes it look decent with the lights and closeups, NOT that kind of obvious eye makeup, and who had the idea that a warrior in a cyberpunk dystopia would need a bold red lip? Or shaved pits?
xx Myka uncomfortable, thinks she has done something wrong, especially when sent back out in the middle of the scene, doesn't notice the argument
co-star Pete tries to comfort her
xxMyka thinks maybe this was bad idea, should quit
xx HG will Not lose my warrior!
(xx Myka in trouble
xx HG kann wen zusammenscheißen, makes sure Myka's fine)
xx from then on Helena trying to keep an eye on Myka, asks how she's dealing with the pressure, what her plans are for if she'll be famous after this project, whether she has a good agent to protect her interests, etc... (eg where u live? city apartment...
H:security? M:none?? H:myself, nature away from most people M: wish could affort...)
Myka: know you're just doing this because you think I'm a good fit for the character and you don't want it to be ruined by me quitting, but I still really appreciate
HG: what?? No, am doing this - well, would for everyone! Know how it is, when I was a kid... nevermind. But, care about you too
Myka finds out why HG is so wary about fame
go to premiere together - "don't have to hold a speech, don't even have to tell anyone who you are, but at least go as my date?"
As usual, I had a first scene instantly in my head, then started thinking quicker than I could write and had to note down bullet points so I wouldn't forget anything xD
Again, thanks for the ask :)

‘I didn’t want to be swallowed up’: actor Josh Hartnett on swapping Hollywood for Hampshire
On track for megastardom, the actor turned down the part of Superman (twice) and turned his back on Hollywood. Now living in rural Hampshire, he talks about choosing fulfilling projects, his hippie childhood, the perils of stalkers – and the fun of owning pygmy goats
Stuart McGurk - Sun 28 Jul 2024
https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/jul/28/i-didnt-want-to-be-swallowed-up-actor-josh-hartnett-on-swapping-hollywood-for-hampshire
Full interview below
Every morning, as soon as the actor Josh Hartnett wakes up in his home in the Hampshire countryside, there are mouths to be fed. Most obviously, those of his four young children. But also: the dog, several guinea pigs, several more chickens and a small herd of pygmy goats. The goats, Hartnett notes, are his favourites.
“They’re the sweetest animals on the planet,” he says, over Zoom, from his home. “They’re like dogs. They would live in the house if they could. In fact, I’ve seen people having their goats in the house with diapers on, but we felt that was kinda cruel.”
Hartnett and his wife, the British actor Tamsin Egerton, spent lockdown here. For years they’d been living a ping-pong existence between the UK and the US. When their third child was on the way, they decided to stay in Hampshire, and Hartnett has become a fixture in local village life ever since.
Unlike when he’s in New York or LA, “where people only want to talk about your career,” he says, here “nobody cares”, which is just how he likes it. He’s in the UK on a marriage visa, which means he can only be out of the country for work 180 days a year, or roughly one movie, which also suits him fine. At night, after the kids have been put to bed, he sometimes finds time to paint – his first love. But mostly, he says, this existence allows him to experience his children growing up in a way he otherwise wouldn’t.
“This is all brand new to me,” he says. “I never would have expected it. And time passes quickly. With four children, you have so much to do. In a way, less is happening. But more of the important stuff is happening. My oldest daughter is eight and a half now – that feels like it happened in the last two years to me. So I’m trying to soak up as much as possible.”
Hartnett’s Hollywood trajectory was a fairly common one. Interesting early indie roles saw his stock rise – Robert Rodriguez’s The Faculty in 1998, Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides a year later. Those parts catapulted him into big-time roles that required little more of him than to look lovelorn (40 Days and 40 Nights, where his character gives up sex for Lent), heroic (Black Hawk Down, which was thrilling but thin), or heroic and lovelorn at the same time (the deeply terrible Pearl Harbor).
But Hartnett didn’t much like the attention that came with the big gigs. And before long he did the most unforgivable thing any would-be megastar could: he decided he didn’t want to be one. He left LA, moved back to his home state of Minnesota and parted company with his agents. Tabloids still bring up Hartnett’s disappearance – “What happened to Josh Hartnett?” Screen Rant asked recently – though it’s been almost two decades since he made the switch.
In reality, Hartnett only stopped working for 18 months. But from then on he declined the bland heart-throb roles for which he was often suggested and instead pushed for more challenging, smaller projects. (He notably turned down the role of Superman twice.) “I just didn’t want my life to be swallowed up by my work,” he says now. “And there was a notion at that time you just kind of give it all up. And you saw what happened to some people back then. They got obliterated by it. I didn’t want that for myself.”
Hartnett is 46 now and, in the past few years, his career has shifted. For a while he took on interesting parts that didn’t always come off. Films like Mozart and the Whale (2005), a love story about two people with Asperger’s, or Resurrecting the Champ (2007), about a journalist who discovers a former heavyweight boxer living on the streets, or even The Black Dahlia (2006), a highly anticipated James Ellroy adaptation. “Some of those films were successful. Some of them were failures. But I was always swinging for something that was outside what people expected from me.”
But recent projects have come good. Last year alone saw him steal the show with a gloriously funny turn as a clueless Hollywood actor in an otherwise so-so Guy Ritchie film (Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre), followed by an astronaut in a metaphysical love triangle in a standout episode of Black Mirror (“Beyond the Sea”), followed by a key role as a nuclear physicist in the Oscar-sweeping smash Oppenheimer. We’re a hair’s breadth away from someone calling it the “Joshonaissance”.
Next up is Trap from M Night Shyamalan, the director of every film with a twist ending you’ve ever watched (The Sixth Sense, Signs, The Village, Old, etc). It sees Hartnett as a doting father who takes his daughter to a pop concert. The twist, which takes within the trailer: he’s also a serial killer known as “The Butcher”. The entire concert is a trap laid on to catch him. A turbo-charged cat-and-mouse caper, the pitch was “Silence of the Lambs at a Taylor Swift concert”.
In casting Hartnett, Shyamalan spoke about how hard it is to find an actor like him. No sooner have movie stars become movie stars by landing the starring role that works for them, he said, they “start to think about how they protect it”. Before long, they start only playing real-life people or settling into franchises. “And so to find somebody that’s a bona fide movie star, that’s a great human being and is willing to risk everything, man, that’s a rare combination. And sometimes you think that doesn’t exist any more. And then he walked in.”
Which does beg the question: why the purple patch now? Hartnett, after all, left the safe roles behind back when Bush was president.
It could, reckons Hartnett, be as simple as “the rest of the industry sort of catching up with what I was always hoping to do”. But also, he says, “maybe it’s also because of my age. I could name a million examples of actors who have become more interesting as they get older. You can’t be an ingenue forever, right?”
Harnett first met Shyamalan at the premiere of The Village in 2004, where they went for dinner afterwards and nerded out over film. He’d always wanted to work with him precisely because of how different all his projects were. “He’s got this reputation as being the sort of king of twists. But I have always looked at him in a different way personally – he’s someone who takes on lots of different genres and just enters those genres from a different perspective.”
He’s also another director Hartnett has had to wait for. When he got the call for Oppenheimer from Christopher Nolan, it came some 20 years after they’d spoken about The Dark Knight, which Nolan was working on at the time. Hartnett wasn’t much interested in playing Batman, and pitched himself instead for a role in another Nolan film, about rival stage magicians, called The Prestige. The role eventually went to Christian Bale, who Nolan had cast as Batman.
It was something of a relief, then, to get the Oppenheimer call all those years later.
“We didn’t have a direct conversation about it,” he says when I asked if Nolan referred to their earlier chat. “But the implication was: ‘I’d better take it.’ You only get so many opportunities with Chris Nolan.”
He doesn’t regret, he says, not pursing superhero roles. But he does allow: “I recognise the missed opportunity to work with a guy like Chris. And I’ve figured out that as much as you’re worried about curating your career to things you’re interested in, I don’t believe that’s the most important thing any more. It’s about finding people who you really trust.”
Hartnett grew up in Saint Paul, Minnesota. His father was a musician, his mother “the girl that likes to go see bands”. He describes them as hippies. They were living in a “shared living situation with other couples and single people” when his mother became pregnant.
I ask if it was it a commune?
“I’m not going to say it was a commune,” he laughs. “It was not a commune. But yes, the way they describe it, it does sound like a commune …”
His father got “a real job” – as a building manager – and bought a house, but his parents soon split up. His mother moved to San Francisco. By the time he was four, his father had married his stepmother, and “it became a much more normal Midwestern existence”.
He was, by the sounds of it, a curious mix. A natural worrier (“My family says I was an existentialist from the age of 12”) and lover of the arts, but also a jock who played on the school football team. “I played a lot of sports, because that’s what you did in the Midwest.” He got his love of painting from his stepmother, an artist, and for the longest time wanted to be an artist himself. He got his love of movies later, in his teens, when working in a video store called Mr Movies. Each night he took armfuls home, becoming obsessed with the French New Wave, and Italian directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci and Federico Fellini.
“This is Saint Paul, Minnesota, in the mid-90s. There wasn’t a lot of foreign film or classics you could rent in Blockbuster. But there was in Mr Movies.”
When I ask if he’s still in touch with his mother, he pauses for a second, and says: “No, she died last year.” It was a difficult relationship. “We had spent most of my youth not around each other. And she had issues with drugs and alcohol.” She had gone to rehab, then developed dementia.
I tell him my father died recently, too – a grief I feel I’m still processing many months on.
“Yeah,” he says after a second or two. “I think… my process of feeling like I had to mourn that relationship, or grieve that grief, I think that started a long time ago. And maybe because I didn’t see her as much as you’d have seen your father, because, you know, she wasn’t around…”
It was his father who had the much bigger impact on his life and, listening to Hartnett talk about him, it’s hard not to draw a through-line from his father’s priorities to his own. The idea, simply, that work isn’t everything; that your family comes first.
“My dad was not someone who valued achievement in that way – high-level work achievement as a means of proving himself. He owned a company. He allowed himself and his employees to work four days a week. And he was home a lot.” He was, he says, “an incredibly responsible human being.”
Over the course of conversation, Hartnett had mentioned the various reasons he’d stepped away from a certain kind of megawatt fame, of which this is clearly one. But I ask him now if there was a point – a moment – he can trace it back to.
He says it wasn’t so simple, no clear line between “happy Josh and unhappy Josh”, but then says: “People’s attention to me at the time was borderline unhealthy.”
Whose attention?
“Well, look, I don’t want to give this a lot of weight,” he begins. By which he means: what he’s about to say is a reason, not to be confused with the reason. “There were incidents. People showed up at my house. People that were stalking me.” At one point, he says, “a guy showed up at one of my premieres with a gun, claiming to be my father. He ended up in prison.” Harnett was 27 at the time – this was 19 years ago. “There were lots of things. It was a weird time. And I wasn’t going to be grist for the mill.”
We talk, briefly, about politics. When we meet, it’s a few days after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump and a few weeks after Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance. Hartnett campaigned for Obama, and has met Biden a couple of times. “He had a wonderful grasp of the issues and was incredibly eloquent, but I don’t know where we’re at these days. That debate was frightening.”
Mostly, thinking of the Trump shooting, he’s fearful of where the US is heading. And not just for us – but what we leave for those after us. “We’re in a transitional moment. The rhetoric is so hot. It’s tragic. And you have fears that the democracy might not be able to withstand those shocks. As you and I experienced recently, life goes quickly. We’re the next generation to go. Do we want to spend all that time fighting each other?”
We end on something substantially lighter – Hartnett’s rather unexpected cameo turn in the latest season of The Bear, recently nominated for a record 23 Emmys. It’s another role, like Trap, in which he plays a dad, or rather a stepfather – though one, presumably, rather less murderous.
It was also another role, he says, that was years in the making, the universe once again circling back around. He’d spoken to co-creator Christopher Storer some time before about making a film that never got off the ground. He remembers Storer mentioned at the time another project he was working on, based on his sister, a chef, and people he knew in Chicago. When Hartnett eventually got the call for season three, he didn’t hesitate. It was, after all, his new rule: work with people you trust.
“And I’ve never been on a set like it,” he says now. “All the actors show up even when they’re not working. They just love being there. It’s like a clubhouse. It shouldn’t be allowed to be called work. It’s too much fun.”
It was also a role that didn’t take long to shoot – a fraction of his 180-day allowance – then back to the Hampshire countryside and his wife, his four young children, his dog, his chickens, his guinea pigs, and several, diaper-free, pygmy goats.

I’ll just never to be able to be pissed at River Song’s ubiquity. Crammed into at least one work of every single incarnation. Like. Moffat saw the power of Rose Marion Tyler and immediately needed to be like NO MY DOLL IS BETTER AND IS THE BEST ACTUALLY. LOOK AT AND LISTEN TO HER ALL THE TIME FOREVER.
I truly feel like the two are masterclasses in how to write a good female character versus how to. Not.
I will forever be so fucking mad.
i’m going to fucking cry i had the whole reply typed out and then the tumblr app glitched and ate it. anyway. let’s talk about river song.
here’s the thing. i like to put river into what me and my mutuals call “the salad spinner”. one of these bad boys:
Tumblr media
where you put in your soaking wet lettuce or whatever and press the button on top and it goes WHHSHSHHHHHHSHHHSSSHHH and all the water drains out? yeah i’m putting moffat’s river in there and draining out all the sexism and weird fetishes and she becomes the character that she always could have been.
like, she’s a bisexual time traveling crime committing archeologist. of course i fell in love with her age ten. the “mercy” scene in the big bang was a sexual awakening for me. the scene in THORS where she’s like “i’m an archeologist from the future. i dug you up.” is in no small part responsible for me getting a minor in archeology. river’s a really important character to me, but the more i grew up, the worse her storyline and origins got to me.
and then in early 2021, i had a revelation. the one step you have to take to fix just about everything about river.
make her NOT amy and rory’s kid.
that’s it. that’s all you have to do. it fixes so many of my issues with the story immediately.
my friend @nounpolycule has much more developed headcanons about this based on the audios (and maybe she’ll explain them when he gets the chance?? 👀), but river as a completely unrelated child taken by the silence who grew up in that environment before escaping and running as far as she could is so much more compelling to me than “amy and rory’s kid who is also their childhood best friend”. she escapes the silence, makes a life of her own, puts herself through school, and becomes an archeologist. in this situation, the first time she meets him (in her timeline) is less “i am programmed to kill you and nothing else matters” and more “you showed up in my doctoral thesis research and dude. you’re REAL? the fuck?”
i really like river’s personality, and most of that is thanks to the depth that alex kingston gives her. river would not be nearly as important to me with a different actor; kingston is just incredibly talented and she loves river and she loves playing her, and she gave so much more to the character than moffat ever did.
like you said, moffat notoriously hates rose and originally wanted river to be “better” than her, but he twisted himself around so much and ended up neglecting river just as much as he did rose. according to alex kingston, moffat was the ONLY writer allowed to put river in episodes. no one else could use her but him. a big part of it is “my doll is better than yours!!!” except at the end of recess his doll is left out in the mud, forgotten entirely. he didn’t even believe that she was the best, didn’t care about her at all past her relationship to the doctor, and you can tell!
river deserved better from the narrative from the beginning.
and she and rose should kiss send post

Bloom Birthday translation - Vil Schoenheit
DO NOT REPOST OR UPLOAD ELSEWHERE
Pomefiore Dorm - Birthday Party Venue
Vil: “I’ve retouched my makeup. I wonder what the interview will be like today.”
Vil: “Unlike work topics, there may be a lot of private discussions.”
???: “—Excuse me.”
Jade: “Happy birthday, Vil-san. Thank you for your time today.”
Vil: “Thank you very much, Jade. You’re the presenter this time.”
Vil: “A good interview depends on what you ask. Do you have any expectations?”
Jade: “This is a big responsibility. Let’s do our best.”
Jade: “Then, let’s start the interview. The first question is…”
Jade: “‘Are you good at flying, or not good at flying?’”
Vil: “I’m not bad at it, but I’m also not particularly good at it either. My grades are also about average.”
Vil: “I’d be lying if I said I’m satisfied with my current state…However, I’m not desperate to compete with others.”
Vil: “It seems many students with top grades received specialized training before enrolling.”
Jade: “Oh? Could it be that Vil-san started studying magic in earnest after entering the school?”
Vil: “That’s right. When I was little, I moved from place to place with my father, an actor, while I also had a job as a child actor…”
Vil: “Just because I manifested magic didn’t mean I thought about entering a magician training school right away.”
Vil: “Even if someone close to me taught me, my father is too busy to use magic in the first place.”
Jade: “Your father isn’t a magician. So, what makes Vil-san good at magic is…”
Vil: “You mean my mother? Hm, who knows.”
Vil: “I don’t know who she is, or whether or not she was a magician. I never thought to find out myself.”
Jade: “Is that so. Regardless, it is surprising. Vil-san has been learning magic since childhood.”
Vil: “Oh? Why is that?”
Jade: “Because……you’re a talented individual chosen to be the housewarden of Pomefiore dorm.”
Vil: “If you think making cosmetics as medicinal magic, then I certainly studied before enrolling.”
Vil: “But, I learned a lot more at Night Raven College.”
Vil: “Speaking of which, I may use flying skills to a certain extent. Not for grades, but for my work.”
Jade: “When it comes to work…modeling? No, as an actor, perhaps.”
Vil: “The latter. CG and wires are often used to shoot scenes in the air.”
Vil: “If you use flying techniques, the range of expression should expand. Not only can it be used for acting, but for shooting.”
Jade: “Works using flying skills…I’m intrigued. I would like to see it.”
Vil: “The day may come when we can unveil it. I look forward to it.”
…………
Jade: “Now then, next question.”
Jade: “‘How is using magic good?’”
Vil: “Spending a wonderful holiday with my father……perhaps.”
Jade: “A wonderful holiday with your father. Under what circumstances did you use magic?”
Vil: “It was my first holiday since I enrolled to Night Raven College.”
Vil: “It had been a long time since my father and I were able to take a day off together, so we decided to go out on the town.”
Vil: “The plan was to have lunch, do some shopping, and then see a movie my father starred in the evening.”
Vil: “Soon after lunch, the paparazzi found me. I thought I was wearing a proper disguise.”
Jade: “A disaster on a long awaited holiday.”
Vil: “Absolutely. They were really vindictive guys. They didn’t give up even when they hid in the shadows, or got lost in the crowd.”
Vil: “I can hide myself with magic now…but, at the time, I didn’t have the skill to do that.”
Jade: “That said, I don’t think Vil-san would fall prey to the paparazzi so easily.”
Vil: “Of course. I tricked the paparazzi with a simple spell.”
Jade: “And, that spell was……”
Vil: “Color changing spell. I suddenly remembered what I learned in class…”
Vil: “I changed the color scheme of mine and my father’s clothes. That way, the image changed.”
Vil: “That day, both of us had bold outfits based on neon colors…”
Vil: “I used magic to change the color of the top with the largest area to milky white.”
Vil: “Even with the same item, the atmosphere changes when the color is different. It changed to an elegant outfit.”
Vil: “Not to mention, the unity of the accessories. The bag was changed to a pale pink. The color of the accessories from silver to gold.”
Vil: “Sure enough, the paparazzi were deceived, and we escaped brilliantly.”
Jade: “With only color changing magic……it certainly is quick witted, unique to Vil-san who is well versed in magic.”
Jade: “The paparazzi must’ve been confused when they lost sight of the two of you.”
Vil: “Yes, they were really impatient.”
Vil: “The frantic look on their face when they ran away without realizing we were right next to them…”
Vil: “Haha! Remembering it now makes me laugh.”
Vil: “At the time, I was able to outwit those rude guys, and feel satisfied.”
Vil: “After that, my father praised me.”
Vil: “It’s a nice coordination making use of the black bottoms I originally wore.”
Jade: “Well, it’s good to be able to use magic, and show your father your growth.”
Jade: “Thank you for sharing your heartwarming and wonderful memories.”
Vil: “You’re welcome. Now, for the next question.”
…………
Jade: “Finally, the next question is the last one.”
Jade: “‘What do you wish to do one year from now?’”
Vil: “Before I retire, I want to leave a mark in the film studies club.”
Jade: “Do you mean that you intend to work more on club activities this year?”
Vil: “Exactly. My goal is to submit the work I’ve done in film studies to a contest, and win the top prize.”
Jade: “I think it’s a great goal. Indeed, it was Vil-san who established the Film Studies Club.”
Vil: “Right, I can’t let my acting sense dull.”
Vil: “When I came to school, I decided to reject all long-term filming in order to concentrate on my studies.”
Jade: “I see. Initially, it was a place to hone your acting skills.”
Jade: “But now, you are aiming for the top prize. Could it be you have a new ambition?”
Vil: “You’re pretty perceptive.”
Vil: “The purpose of “creating a place to perform” when it was inaugurated, has already been achieved.”
Vil: “However, as I worked in Film Studies, my interest expanded beyond acting.”
Jade: “Something other than acting……”
Vil: “Work as a director or producer. Knowing the fun of producing works through Film Studies activities…”
Vil: “I have come to believe that it’s not a bad thing to be active not only on the side of being filmed, but also on the side of filming.”
Jade: “That’s surprising. I thought Vil-san would continue acting in movies.”
Vil: “Of course, I won’t quit acting.”
Vil: “But, I want to explore all aspects that make a movie other than acting.”
Jade: “Ah, that’s why you said you wanted to win the prize.”
Vil: “Yes. The club members are also passionate about club activities, and I’m sure they will be able to produce good results this year.”
Vil: “……No, I will definitely make it happen with this hand.”
Jade: “Vil-san, thank you for telling us a very interesting story.”
Jade: “Now then, please accept this broom.”
Vil: “My, it’s a beautiful broom. The tip is decorated with flowers.”
Jade: “Yes. The large flowers that are in full bloom are very suitable for Vil-san.”
Vil: “Thank you. I also like it since it seems to add color to the figure flying in the sky.”
Vil: “Well, I should head over to the Birthday Road soon.”
Jade: “Yes, please be careful. I am looking forward to seeing Vil-san fly gorgeously.”
Vil: “Heh, I’ll show you more than what you expected, so watch closely.”
Tumblr media
Vil: “Fufu……I will captivate everyone more than usual with my beauty flying in the sky.”

⭐ sorry about this, but i wanted to ask about your allison and five fic that you did a while back; 'the garden's overgrown'? ❤️
no need to be sorry, this is what i reblogged the ask game for! - the garden's overgrown
this one was a while ago. pre-the umbrella academy season 3 (back when i still had hope, lol). my thought process for writing it was mostly wanting allison and five to have shared screentime - mostly in the badass sense, because they'd be unstoppable together, but that's not really my vibe when writing so i went for the emotional aspect instead
i think allison is always the most... determined, to have a normal life. mostly because she actually built one for herself when claire was born. i think that's a really good match for how five never really learned how to be a person, and allison's so caring that i could see her pushing him towards figuring that out (even in little ways like "taking breaks" and "eating" and "sleeping"). she realised that the way reginald treated them wasn't right when she became a parent too ("mind controlling your child is unethical," says the law - even though they didn't care about ethics when allison was a child soldier for a billionaire who bought babies and made them fight bank robbers - and allison decides, all on her own, to be better), so she's doing the thing where you become an adult, realise your parents' shortcomings, and just start raising yourself. that's where her reaching out to viktor so much comes from, because if claire was treated the way viktor was as a child, allison would probably kill someone
the thing with claire... it kind of makes sense that five tapped out of the conflict at that point in the show, because all of his siblings were alive (even ben! sort of), and he was exhausted so he decided claire's non-existence wasn't his problem, but that doesn't... sit right with me. his whole thing is family, and allison would never be happy without her daughter - yeah yeah, "i'm not looking for happy," but they're still in the wrong timeline and his perfectionist tendencies and understanding of the consequences of time travel could never accept that - so he keeps pushing himself to fix things the right way. plus, even if he did stop running, that lifetime of trauma would inevitably catch up with him. i understand why the show can't delve into that, but realistically that's what would happen if he took a break, and i think it's a really fascinating explanation for why he never stops. even when he's actively bleeding out
and back to allison! i love allison. it was really nice writing from a woman character's perspective. i already mentioned this in the fic's end note, but i had laryngitis when i wrote it (don't scream-sing with headphones on; bad), and that really influenced all the references to the bad stuff that's happened to allison's throat throughout the show (she can't catch a break - logical weaknesses for plot-breaking powers suck), and also how linguistically-focused someone with a Magic Voice's perspective would be. i slipped a little bit of her experience as an actor in there too, because come on, allison is so smart. why wouldn't that come up regularly when she's trying to manipulate her siblings into self-care?
to highlight a particular section that i always giggle about on re-reads, because i think i'm very clever:
She remembers holding a gun to her brother’s head.
She doomed the world—doomed Claire—because she refused to do what her father would have expected of her in that situation.
She chose door number three and everything immediately fell apart.
Isn’t that just typical.
this really explains everything about allison (aka Number Three) to me. no matter what she does, she can't win. she loses her childhood, her brothers, her daughter, her first marriage, her voice, her siblings, her time, her rights, her second marriage, her daughter again after giving up her second husband to come back to her, her whole world every time she rebuilds it from the ground up - she loses everything whether she uses her powers or not, whether she tries to be good or not, whether she listens to the ghost of reginald hargreeves or not. this woman can get anything she wants with just a few words, and yet she still can't have anything at all. isn't that ironic? isn't that deeply tragic?
and that is exactly why the natural direction of allison's character is going off the deep end. no more playing nice. her daughter was taken from her, allison has the ability to reshape reality, and she's going to use it. i don't believe five really has a lot of creativity or understanding of allison's powers when he says there's nothing she can do; he's been away for so long, his brain is probably fried, and she's smarter than anyone gives her credit for. she could think of something besides five's (let's face it, historically unstable) equations to get them out of this. and with allison helping five get them all to the elusive reality where their family can finally be safe and happy and together, he would actually succeed for once. which is presumably why the show has thus far refused to let this dream team happen (like powerful klaus, it fixed everything in the comics, and therefore it would break the show)

Here’s my opinion on Finn as an actor as someone who does a lot of theatre (directing and acting).
He’s definitely someone who has a lot of charisma and that really shines in his younger performances, before the self-consciousness that comes with growing up took effect. I think he does really well when he has other people to bounce off in a scene, and he’s extremely good with micro-expressions. Basically the raw talent and inclination toward the art is there.
People have mentioned this, but being an actor as an adult is extremely different to acting when you’re a kid. Some of that childhood charisma wears off. You can’t necessarily get by on raw talent. You usually need to fine-tune your skills and be more purposeful of your choices. Daniel Radcliffe’s career is a good example. I watched an interview with him where he said doing the Kill Your Darlings movie after HP was like learning acting all over again, and the first time he learned about things like thought work and objectives. Many child actors who end up continuing into adulthood take acting classes so they can learn some of these formal skills. In my opinion, Finn has the talent and presence and he thrives in scenes with older actors to help ground his performance more, but he could benefit from taking a class or two to better hone these things IF that’s what he wants to do. I think he himself has mentioned finding acting very different as an older person, and becoming more self-conscious of his performance.
It seems like he wants to go the directing route, and he would have the first-hand experience from growing up on sets to see how it’s done, and every director has their own style, but really studying the craft of acting could also help him direct actors well too. This all just depends on what exactly he wants to do with his career going forth, but that’s just the way it looks to me. I still think he’s very talented. I also wonder if it has something to do with Mike not getting a very meaty role in s3/4 the way characters like Max and El did. Hoping s5 can pull through and give him some good material to work with
all so true thank you for sharing these thoughts!
I def agree the pull of focus away from mike has made people forget his ability and potential, really looking forward to his s5 arc I'm so sure they'll give him something good!

Eiji Akaso speaks to a "small magazine"
Summary
🔸When he was 20,21 years when was barely surviving as actor he started to read Nietzsche, him at that same age was jobless like him so he started to read his books
🔸Education was never difficult [from an early age he was told : if you study hard as a child, you will have many more choices in front of you in the future to help you find your goals,so even now as an adult he always studies even its hard now like an habit].
🔸 English was his favorite class that's why he wanted to majored in English.
🔸he first told his mother he wanted to be an actor, she said she will support him but she said : " the problem is your father isn't"
🔸As his father was an university professor he worried but his dad kindly gave him a push saying: "it's good you found what you want to do"
🔸Kuroko's basketball Director's impression of Akaso [Most of the actors I contacted wanted to show their faces, so that the director could see more of them, but Akaso was the opposite, very low-key, and he was always talking about acting, so I thought this kid was too sincere, and that's what made the director appreciate Akaso.
🔸During Cherry Maho🍒he realized communication was Important on his growth & changed, before this he was afraid to give his opinion & have discussions about the play.
🔸About Haruka:
"After we got married in the Novel we talked about what this scene we convey than we didn't when we're childhood friends.
wearing a hanger, laughing & jocking around,I clearly separated my time off & on(laughs)"
🔸From the beginning to the end Akaso responded politely
The last sentence of the interview script is also moving
"I asked a Hundred Billion stars to illuminate Akaso new path" ( referring to Takashi famous tanka in the series)
Intercepts of the interview ⬇️
"Friends and relatives say to me 'I'm watching, congratulations', and I'm happy to be called 'Takashi' when I walk on the street"
Previously, Akaso was notable for his works geared toward the younger crowd, and this time, his smooth yet gentle tone in the morning drama has skyrocketed his popularity among housewives.
In order to find out what kind of character he really is, Bunshun "small Magazine" hastily applied to him personally for an interview & collect materials, and received permission.
"I lost more auditions than I can count, and the first few years I was living on a part-time job. The first year there were two or three job opportunities, but they were all one-line roles. Even when I tried to honor my parents with my first paycheck, it was all used as living expenses ....... I remember being very upset. It really was a barely living life, not living without working meals, and only buying things on discount sale at the supermarket. Barely making ends meet."
Norihito Nakayashiki, who wrote and directed the 2016 stage plays "Kuroko's Basketball", revealed. "A lot of young actors love to act like, 'Look at me. I want to be popular', but he is the complete opposite. It's rare to see actors with such low self-promotion skills (laughs). But I was attracted to such an Akaso. I remember during rehearsals he would ask, 'How are my lines?' He was always talking about acting.
"At that time, I was not experienced enough to express my opinion, but I didn't answer yes or no immediately to what my senpais told me, Instead ,I thought about it carefully in my own mind. "
He was a sincere actor who faced acting.
"At that time, I think I was still in the dark" Where did he get the proof that he could continue as an actor?
Akaso said again.
"I haven't any confirmation yet, but what made up my mind was during the time of "Kamen Rider Build". (The super masked heroes series) lasted for a year, and the children would call me 'Banjo'. I guess the children didn't want to see a Kamen Rider in a part-time job. After that, I decided to never live on part-time jobs again"😭
*( it's hard not to love Him ,who gently guards the children's dreams 🥹🥺)

It was quite a lot of my mother's side of the family, my grandma (81, absolutely bonkers) and my aunt are going to Poland to visit my cousins (my aunt's eldest child, his wife and their daughter, Angel) for a week, so we gathered to say goodbye and give them any presents we had for Angel (she's had a birthday since the last of us went to Poland). It was less of a dinner and more of a "bring a plate of finger food" but I don't see them often because I work nights so catching up was nice.
I watched the new PJO last night actually! I waited until it was all released before I watched any of it (anxiety and cliffhangers don't mix well (I knew what would happen but anxiety doesn't care)) Oh my stars, those kids all did so well!!! It was a joy to watch from start to finish!! (for me at least, I know fan opinion is split)
Oh you ask the hard questions, don't you? My favourite TSC characters (I'm gonna cheat and say 2) I would have to say is Ty and Alec. I relate to both of them a lot. Ty was the first character like me (autistic) I ever saw in the media and there just aren't words for how much that meant to me. Alec I related to a lot as well because all he wants is his family safe and happy, even if he has to change the world to do it.
What about you? Who's your favourite of the TMI gang?
-☀️
Oh that sounds so wholesome! Is is okay if I ask from which country you‘re from (you don‘t have to answer)? Omg you work nights?! I could never do that! I‘m a day person through and through and have to be at bed by 10 pm like a grandma haha.
That‘s actually so smart (even though I would have been way too impatient to wait that long to watch it haha). I loved the show so much, but I still understand certain critique points like the pacing. As you said the actors did absolutely amazing (The angst in episode five?!? They are the perfect Percabeth). I literally screamed and needed to pause the episode for 5 minutes when the first „Seaweed Brain“ dropped. And the last episode was just crazy good! What was your favorite episode or scene?
They‘re two of my favs as well! And it‘s so amazing that you saw yourself representing through Ty! (I think that also shows how important it is to write characters that people can relate to).
So I actually have quite a lot of characters I love but my absolute favourite has to be Kit. I was simply so moved by his story and that even though he had a tough and unloving childhood, he‘s a such a gentle and kindhearted person and never truly loses hope.
My favourite TSC gang would either be the TLH or the TMI gang. I can‘t even really explain why but I just love them so much.
What about you? And here‘s another tough question: Which is your favourite TSC book?
Happy Valentine’s Day btw! I really love chatting with you!
Love you lots! 💕

PJO S1E8:
Oooh, flashback to fighting Luke. That's poetry.
Percy over here having been in this world for like two weeks and already fighting one of the most dangerous Gods and foiling a plot meant to start a war.
The look on Ares's face as the wave came down 😂
Well, at least he gave up the helm. Maybe he really didn't know that Kronos was using him? Or was he on Kronos's side all along? Idr.
I fucking forgot about Alecto. Quite funny that she was after them for the helm and not the master bolt.
"Good luck on Olympus." See, maybe there is some honor in the monsters' side after all.
"I'm done running from monsters. This is too important. I have to try." / "You're gonna need all the luck you can get." 😭
And, it's back to New York.
Not Percy walking in like he owns the place. Good for him.
Luke over here instilling bad thoughts into Percy's mind thinking he can corrupt him.
Damnnnn, Olympus looks fucking amazing. 👀
There's something hilarious about the fact that Zeus looks absolutely nothing like his brothers.
POSEIDON!
Poseidon using Thalia's existence against Zeus in defense of Percy 👍
There is something hilarious about Percy and his father wearing shirts over such similar color.
"The sea does not like to be restrained." What a line.
"She taught me a lot of things." 😭
"Do you ever dream about Mom?" 😭
gets fucking dropped conveniently right next to where the other forbidden child rests Poseidon could have put him anywhere in the Camp, there's something very significant about this.
PERCY STARING AT LUKE AS HE REALIZES THAT HE IS THE TRAITOR.
Luke's first words not being of denial, but: "I didn't think you'd give them to Grover to wear" is actually kind of scary, especially in that almost-sad tone.
HIS SWORD JUST CUT REALITY OPEN
"I met your dad" being the line that provokes Luke is fucking perfect.
ANNABETH WAS THERE THE WHOLE TIME, OH MY GOD. IMAGINE HOW SHE MUST FEEL RIGHT NOW. HOLY SHIT. HE WAS HER BEST FRIEND 😭😭
Chiron giving a heartfelt speech, with Dionysus coming up to fucking ruin the moment 😂
ANNABETH IS GOING BACK TO SEE HER DAD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LIKE FOUR YEARS 😭
"Just...be a kid." I wish someone had told me that when I was their age.
I love seeing how close these three has become. And the way Percy made them promise to come back to see each other again. Goddddd, I love them so much. The childhood nostalgia is real.
Percy, you forgot to close the door.
Back to what I said about some monsters having honor...Hades kept his word.
Fuck off, Kronos.
Percy went from "You're better at this than me" to "Well, it turns out I'm pretty good at this" and I am so happy for him. Our boy's gained some self-esteem.
I mean, he's not wrong about calling Kronos his grandfather, but man is that funny 😂
AYYY, SHE DIVORCED GABE.
THEY DID NOT FUCKING SEND MEDUSA'S HEAD BACK TO PERCY. The fact that Gabe was the one to find and open it in his spite is the best shit ever.
Wait. If the box got turned to stone because he was holding it, does that mean the head just turned itself to stone as well?
Okay, so. I was googling who Lance Reddick was because of the tribute at the end, and. It is truly so tragic that last year two actors died before the release of a project they would likely end up returning in. Looking back at everything he's been in, I'm honestly surprised I've never heard of him before. But, man, he and Ray Stevenson...I am actually so sad about this.

“Your beauty never ever scared me”
A Scaramouche x GN!Reader SMAU
Chapter 7: Feelings?
Previous | Next
Masterlist
———————————————————————
You woke up, your back sore from sleeping on your god awful couch. You rubbed your eyes, then looked up to see Scaramouche.
How is he so pretty all the time?
You mentally slapped yourself for thinking this. “Hey what time is it?” You asked him, slowly getting up.
“6:00 am on the dot, I’m about to head to my place to get ready, I was just waiting on you to wake up first,” Scaramouche informed you, standing up.
That’s so sweet
You groaned, rubbing your back, “Fuck that hurts,”.
“I didn’t ask you to sleep on the couch too, you could have just gone to your room,” He shouted from your kitchen, pouring himself a glass of water.
He has such a beautiful voice
You shook your head, why were you think these things? About your childhood best friend no less.
“Hey Y/N, I’m gonna head out now, I told Childe to come pick me up. Honestly it’s the least he could do for taking my car without telling me last night, again,” Scaramouche told you, whilst trying to comb knots out of his hair.
He’s so cute
This time you actually slapped yourself. What was wrong with you?? “Alright, see you at school Scara,” you smiled.
He nodded, giving you a smile in return, “See you,”.
Once the door closed you picked up a pillow and screamed into it for what felt like hours. You were so confused why you were thinking these things about him, and out of nowhere too. After probably ten minutes of screaming, you finally got up and started getting ready.
You tried to take your mind off of Scaramouche throughout the school day, you assumed that maybe you had just been spending too much time with him recently. You just needed a refresher. Once the fourth period bell rang, you quickly got up and left your classroom, you hated math. Your pace slowed as you saw Scaramouche far down the hall. He was waving at you with an annoyed smile plastered on his face. You knew he just came from drama, he probably was about to rant about how awful some of the actors are. The longer you looked at him approaching, the more butterflies filled your stomach.
God I feel sick
You felt so nervous, why was he making you so nervous? You’ve been friends since you were 10.
Maybe I should go home
You wrapped your arms around your stomach. Your heart was beating so fast.
Why am I-
Oh
Oh.
So that’s it
The realization hit you like a bus. You weren’t sure what to make of your feelings. You immediately turned and started speed walking the other direction, leaving behind a confused Scaramouche. Why did these feelings have to come after years of friendship? Why now?

Authors notes:
•Yeah Y/N fell first
•Yes I pulled out the “Oh. Oh.”
•I like the idea of Y/N’s feelings seemingly coming out of nowhere, idk maybe that’s because they’ve always come out of nowhere for me in the past too 💀

your jaw drops when ji-ae mentions chaeyoung having an inside man to tamper with the test results and it’s likely she does have a mole. she too was nervous about the results. it was as if there was a chance the results could state otherwise but if she’s so sure he’s the father then why did she look so nervous?
“i do think it’s possible she might have a mole because she was just as nervous as us when the nurse read the results” you admit “after the nurse read the probability, she was all cocky again” and now ji-ae is convinced that there must be someone working with her. this is why you’re thinking of adopting jaemin because his mother is just using him. the infant doesn’t deserve that so when jungkook asks if that’s running through your mind, you nod your head.
“either we take sole custody or have a loving family take care of him but first, we have to figure out if there’s a mole or not” and jungkook is onboard. while chaeyoung is thinking she broke up their happy family, the two of you are devising a plan to take chaeyoung down once and for all with jungkook volunteering to go see chaeyoung at the hospital.
“what? no”
“jungkook should go, y/n. only because i don’t want you to put your hands on her and she’s more responsive to jungkook than you. she doesn’t like you and probably thinks she broke the two of you up”
“you’re right! act like we broke up and get her to confess. tell her all the things she wants to hear jungkook. she’s responsive when you’re affectionate”
“yeah, butter her up kookie. cry on her shoulder and make it seem like the two of you actually broke up. when she mentions y/n you can’t give those big puppy eyes i blessed you with”
you snicker at ji-ae and it gets jungkook to laugh as well. you walk him to the front door and hand him the keys to your car.
“i know you hate being affectionate with her but just show her a little love. use those acting skills of yours and say what she likes. do NOT let her bite you, voice record everything, and be safe okay?” you lean up to press a kiss to jungkook’s cheek “i love you, okay?” you whisper and after that, he leaves you with ji-ae to see chaeyoung at the hospital.
He says I love you back to you before heading out to see the supposed mother of his child, as he’s driving to the hospital, he cannot help but think about just how strong you are as a person and as a partner. You have everything he lacks.
Emotional intelligence, the power to let go, the patience to listen, emotional maturity, healthy way of loving. He is crying to himself as he’s driving because he’s just so ashamed of what he’s done to you.
And he has to make her believe that you broke up.
Of course, he’s not going to let her bite him and he’s going to voice record everything. After driving for a few minutes he’s parking in the hospital parking lot.
He doesn’t waste time to enter the hospital and take the elevator to the fourth floor, where she is staying, Jungkook sighs, as he prepares himself to act.
He was a good actor since childhood.
He calms down after coming out of the elevator he’s knocking at her door. He doesn’t wait for anyone to open it, he goes inside.
She is going to be so surprised him, she’s not expecting him that’s for sure. Jungkook peaks a look at her and she’s still awake but the baby is probably sleeping.
Jungkook closes his eyes and remembers your face.
Okay… kook you can do this!
“C-Chaeyoung!!!!!” Taking her by surprise, he calls out her name. Jungkook approaches her bed with frantic energy, his eyes are red because of all the crying he did in the car.
Time to put on a show, honestly, if he wasn’t a businessman, he was definitely going to become an idol or an actor.
“S-She broke up with me!!! T-That bitch left me.” he cringes internally when he calls you a bitch…. He feels so bad.. “I-I thought she loved me but- as soon as she saw the baby… she left me…” he cries as he goes to her.
“She said that even you deserved better than to have an asshole like me—- she called me a manwhore and so many names…” he’s squinting his eyes, biting his lip.
“C-Chae… she left me…” he whispers, “I-I felt so bad.. she made me realize how bad I was to you…. You’ve given me a beautiful son and she- ugh… she never valued my love. You were right she chose her peace over me once again…”
Jungkook sobs dramatically, “she even slapped me so hard…” he pouts. “I-I realized just how different you and her really are.
You’re a psychotic bitch and she’s an angel.
“Y-You can do anything for me, and she always expects me to do everything for her!! I-I’m so sorry I was just here to tell you how regretful I am for how I’ve behaved with you…”

Hello! What do you think of alicent being physically harsh with ty tennant's aegon? She abuses him (it felt like that to me) and then tells aegon that his sister is a dangerous person (which she is), but at that point rhaenyra hasn't done anything, and otto is not there to advise her also but she sees rhaenyra rightly as a legitimate threat. Then when we come to tgc aegon it's like she forgot that her children's lives are in danger and fights more for rhaenyra than her own children. By then she has seen first hand how dangerous rhaenyra is with aemond, vaemond, laenor etc.
Also olivia had told somewhere that alicent is thinking in eggs coronation how rhaenyra will not reconcile with her anymore. I mean why would you care about rhaenyra then. I dont mind people having affection for childhood friends but when said friend doesn't give a shit about your kids or your own mental and physical well-being then it becomes really pathetic and an unhealthy obsesion.
Im saying I'm so confused why she keeps flip-flopping. Why the heck is she on rhaenyra's side when her kids are more into protecting her than rhaenyra. She even forced aegon to accept his crown when he said no. (If they make her poison him for rhaenyra, she will be just so terrible)
The writing is making me insane. I want to get some clarity and i thought to ask you since you have such well thought out responses. Sorry for such a long question.
hey there. thank you for having faith in my abilities to make sense of this mess. i do take it as a compliment that you guys think to come to me for help whenever you're confused by smth or pondering an issue. 💌
so, i hope you won't feel too upset, but i'm going to redirect you to the relevant tags as i've been ranting about this quite a lot already and would just end up repeating myself.
long story short: it's inconsistent writing. each episode usually had a different writer & director, each with their different take on the characters. that's fine and all, but something happened there bc the people in charge (miguel??) didn't do a good enough job to smooth things over chronologically and make sure everyone is on the same page and that the character developments are linear.
that's why alicent is antagonistic and out to get rhaenyra one episode, then the next episode she wants to be bffs. that's why the showrunners say one thing to the media, but the actors say another. look at this through the perspective that they're not going to come out having a go at each other in the press because that would be unprofessional. so we're never gonna find out what miguel actually did for sure and who's responsible for all this mixed messaging.
as for alicent being physically harsh with ty's aegon. she is, as you said, alone at court, experiencing first hand viserys' indulgence & favouritism towards rhaenyra + his unwillingness to sanction her even for grave illegalities*, so that only increases her paranoia that her children are going to suffer the consequences of this. on top of /that/, aegon himself doesn't take this seriously and she has just found out he also colludes with rhaenyra's children (the people who will order his execution in the future, but he's too blind to see it now) and bullies his own brother (aka the one he could actually trust and support, but instead alienates). she goes to viserys first but he ignores her concerns again.
so i think she just snaps in that moment and loses patience with aegon. him wanking in the middle of the day in the tommen window doesn't help his case. now, alicent is not a modern mother living in the 21st century, with a whole literature of child development & psychology at her disposal, therapists and specialists to guide her. she also has her own trauma to deal with, no help on that front either. she can't "educate" herself. she is not going to be gentle parenting aegon lol. she uses what tools she has at her disposal: first talking nicely, that doesn't work, then she starts yelling and grabs his face so that he'll listen, bc what else is she supposed to do? she literally isn't conceptually aware of any other way to get her message across
*again, that's placing your bastards in the line of succession against their trueborn relatives, not having bastards in the first place

Happy birthday Jo! (And Harry!)
Tumblr media
Today my role-model turns 58, and The Boy Who Lived, 43.
Tumblr media
You don't always get lucky that the people you love for subjective reasons become even better for objective reasons, but we did. I admire other authors, characters, actors, but sometimes they do things I frown upon, things I can't defend, and yet, it isn't the case with Jo. With her, I can breathe in peace knowing what she does will always be for the benefit of those who need a hero the most.
Harry was a hero for any of us who have known terrible loss, and taught us to make the best out of shit situations, to look at the bright side of things — consider your friends, choose your own family, fight for things you believe in — and to be brave and persistent, to stay true to yourself, to be selfless and kind, to be heroes of our own stories. To me, he's one of the most humane and extraordinary characters I've known, with tremendous depth, someone that is heroic not because he wants to be, not out of a deep desire of protagonism or power, or because he likes the limelight, but because he makes the best our of every difficult choice, and he tries to do the right thing. He's so deeply flawed, but always within logic (i.e. when he isolates himself from his friends because for 11 years he never had any and it's still hard to know what to do with them), and then he raises above his challenges, even the self-imposed ones.
In the Harry Potter books I found solace through a sometimes miserable childhood, again through more and more loss, and again in times of Covid. I found advice, I found the friendly words I needed, I found courage and inspiration, I found good old friends — and realised Hogwarts would, indeed, always be there when I needed it, even twenty plus years on.
Harry's story almost seems to mirror Joanne Rowling's. She knew incredible adversity and overcame it, and like Harry, she found true love, she made a family of her own, she found a place she could call home and true friends to stand beside her. And after all the success she's known, she's always giving back to us. This is a summary of some of her charitable work:
About 16% of her wealth in 2011 went to organisations fighting worldwide poverty, something that she's continued doing year after year.
Various work with Amnesty International.
The Ickabog royalties went to supporting charities that supported vulnerable groups affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
J.K. Rowling is Founder and President of Lumos, an international children’s charity fighting for every child’s right to a family by transforming care systems around the world. Lumos sheds light on the root causes of family separation and demonstrates that children can safely be united with loving families that help them thrive.
The Anne Rowling Clinic was founded by a donation from J.K. Rowling in 2010 in memory of her mother Anne.  The Clinic delivers clinical care and research to improve the lives of people with degenerative conditions affecting the brain, as well as hosting specialist NHS clinics for these conditions.  Jo continues to fund MS research exclusively through the Anne Rowling Clinic.
J.K. Rowling's charitable trust, Volant, which she set up in 2000 to administer grants to charities, to alleviate social deprivation particularly affecting women and children.
She's also created Beira's Place, a service for victims of sexual violence, focused on women (including trans men with female sexual organs).
Additionally, substantial donations to charity in the form of book royalties.  Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages are sold in aid of Comic Relief and Lumos, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard is sold in aid of Lumos. Royalties from The Ickabog go to Volant, to help support vulnerable groups who’ve been particularly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, in the UK and internationally.
And then J.K. Rowling is a decorated social warrior, standing up for children, for homeless, for people who've suffered major disaster in life, and for women, doing anything and everything for us even when she meets opposition. She never gives up.
Thank you, Jo. You're my hero. Thank you for your hard work, and for the stories that will keep your memory and your activism alive, long after you're gone. Thank you for making my days so much brighter. Wishing you and Harry a wholesome day of much-deserved joy and laughter. HAPPY BIRTHDAE!!!
