1850: Night at the Opera (in collaboration with The Royal Thornolia Chronicles)

After my months-long Celtic spree, the time has come to briefly return to my old era of interest...

May I present to you a small 1850s set, made together with amazing Ali, the author of @theroyalthornoliachronicles! We're both so excited to finally share it with you all 💗 Make sure to check Ali's post for her half of the collaboration - practically necessary if you want your mid-Victorian gentlemen to be properly dressed for the evening!

While Ali dealt with the men, I focused - surprise surprise - on the ladies. And made two evening dresses, both inspired by the same fashion plate from ca. 1850:

If you follow Ali's story, you probably remember that a certain mademoiselle Eleanor Valery wore the dress on the right to an opera event. The dress on the left also made a short appearance, as it (or rather: its beta version) was worn by my simself Cecile, who was kindly invited to participate in the evening as well (no, that's not my real name. I just asked my husband to give me a random female French name, and that was the first thing he came up with ;)). And so both dresses are named after those characters: Eleanor and Cecile.

Both come in 29 swatches and I swear all of those colour combos come straight from mid-Victorian fashion plates - even if Ali claimed some of them remind her of 1980s Barbies ;)

You might notice that they vary slightly in style, and that's because I put an insane amount of work into texturing Cecile, as somehow I couldn't get it to look any satisfactory with my usual methods. I love the result, but the whole process was so convoluted that I'm not even sure if I could still retrace all the steps, let alone redo Eleanor in the same style. So we're left with this small discrepancy between both dresses. Hope you don't mind!

Oliver: Good! You needed a rest. By the way, I thought it would please Hortense to have an estate in Francesim, so that we could visit you from time to time. Napoléon V: That's a good idea, I like knowing that my twin sister won't be too far away from us.

Oliver: Of course, don't worry, I'll look after her… That is, if you agree, officially Napoléon V: Officially, so that's it?

Oliver: Yes, I've been ready for several months now. I'm sorry again for all the trouble I've caused you, it wasn't… Napoléon V: Let's not talk about it any more. It's all settled. I know that Hortense will be happy with you, surely … more than with me.

Oliver: You were born to take different paths. At this time in your lives, the distance is natural. However, I believe I can echo Hortense's sentiments that she loves you dearly, no matter what and despite everything that has happened. Napoléon V: Thank you, Oliver. I'm counting on you to look after her.

Napoléon V and his entourage went to the Grand Bal de l'X, organised by the École Polytechnique to celebrate the end of their year of study. The ball took place at the Opéra Garnier, and featured a number of performances including dances, fencing, a choir and many other distinguished ceremonies. It's a not-to-be-missed event for young students. During the evening, Oliver approached his friend Napoléon V to officially ask for his sister Hortense's hand in marriage. The Emperor agreed to make the engagement official.

Oliver : Et ta lune de miel alors, ça s’est bien passé ? Napoléon V : Très bien, merci. C’était étrange d’être coupés du monde, loin de toute l’agitation parisienne.

Oliver : Tant mieux! Tu avais besoin de repos. À propos, j’ai pensé que cela ferait plaisir à Hortense d’avoir un domaine en Francesim, pour que l’on puisse vous rendre visite de temps en temps. Napoléon V : C’est une bonne idée, j’aime savoir que ma jumelle ne sera pas trop éloignée de nous.

Oliver : Bien sûr, ne t’en fais pas, je prendrai soin d’elle… Enfin, si tu y consens, officiellement Napoléon V : Officiellement, alors ça y est ?

Oliver : Oui, cela fait plusieurs mois que je suis prêt. Encore désolé pour tous les ennuis que j’ai pu t’attirer, ce n’était pas… Napoléon V : N’en parlons plus. C’est réglé. Je sais que Hortense sera heureuse avec toi, sûrement … plus qu’avec moi

Oliver : Vous êtes nés pour prendre des chemins différents. À ce moment de votre vie, la distance est naturelle, mais je crois pouvoir me faire l'écho des sentiments d'Hortense qui t'aime tendrement, quoi qu'il arrive et en dépit de tout ce qui s'est passé. Napoléon V : Merci Oliver. Je compte sur toi, pour veiller sur elle.

Emmeline has gone missing from the sanitarium's chambers, and I have been so helpfully informed that the staff is searching "as vastly as they can, under the limitations of the weather." Can they not imagine how she must feel? Bloody stupid doctors — totally inept, deceptive villains!

I have seen the boys’ curious stares, and am well-aware of the questions they are so silently but incessantly asking. I have not said a word to them; what is there that I can say?

My raging only serves to keep myself from pondering the same horrible hypotheticals as them — I feel so overwhelmed with my worries that I can hardly think at all. To leave in the midst of a winter storm, so far from home…I struggle to not envision the worst eventualities in my mind’s eye.

Yet, I must have hope. It is all I have.

❄️: What is the most intricate or detailed thing you ever had to do for your story?

Honestly probably from now until the end of the story this honor goes to the Mardi Gras arc (or Gatsby Week). I’m sure y’all know what I’m talking about, but please enjoy this trio of posts yet again, which essentially went live one after the other and was a frenzy to try and get done. I really wanted a moment that was just pure stereotypical 1920s, full of unabridged folly and gilded decadence with an undercurrent of sinister menace that you’re almost too blinded to see at first.

Naturally the New Orleanian in me knew that this had to happen at Mardi Gras, because the frenzied sense of abandon and finality in the air during those weeks is exactly what I wanted for the story. But making that come to life (especially for the parade scene itself) was way beyond anything I’d done up until that point, and I really just decided to jump right in. Still I would never have been able to do it without those decos from @theroyalthornoliachronicles so you’re still a legend for that babe and I thank you ❤️

🧤: If you could magically touch any of your OC’s to bring them to life who would that be?

Number one, how dare you force me to make such a choice? Especially when you already know the answer is definitely not Antoine and totally not because I’m trying to steal Zelda’s man nope no way not a chance.

Also just the whole main character trio of the 1920s because I would like to just be friends with Jo and Zelda and live through all the arcs of that decade thank you very much. Wild parties with Jo through the night and certainly not because I’m also I’m love with her. Then recovering, sitting in total silence while reading with Zelda. Then also Antoine because…yes please see above 🫣

🛷: Was there ever a time when you felt like your story was going downhill? Did you have to change anything to shift directions?

I’m not sure about downhill, but goodness gracious you already know the behind the scene work to try and control the bobsled going wild that was the end of the 1920s. It was like we had already pushed off from the top of the hill and everything was already in motion, so there was no slowing down and no stopping, but I had to keep swerving to avoid trees and obstacles to make sure everything tied up exactly the way I wanted it to and also lead seamlessly into the 1930s. I do think I narrowly avoided making Antoine too unlikeable at the end there, but that’s thanks to someone helping me steer the sled since guess what, I have never been on one in my life 😂

Sometimes people really fucking make me angry especially when good people get impacted and one of those is a great friend and fellow simmer, @theroyalthornoliachronicles mother. Ali’s mom is unfortunately getting evicted from her home and without much of a prior notice, she has to try and find a new place to live and with little finances which is why I’m asking if anyone can donate any money even if it’s a small amount but if you can’t because of your own financial circumstances. DOWN WITH DYLAN. I do not trust him as far as I can throw him, and even that’s pushing it. His family has ties to Burgandy, and Sebastian is a MUCH better fit for Victoria. If she doesn’t wake up and realise that she’s only going through the motions and doing what people expect, she’ll end up married and trapped to a man she doesn’t love. She clearly loves Sebastian, but because she believes she must go through with a decision she’s made for herself she’s denying herself happiness. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: DOWN WITH DYLAN. She better be a runaway bride because I swear to all that is holy I will throw hands (Love you and your fabulous story....just...stop making me grumpy please ❤️).

temperance: can you describe a strange dream you’ve had?

The weirdest dreams I can remember were when I was first prescribed mirtazapine years ago. I had a dream that I was in a chalet with a bunch of interconnected rooms that had swimming pools and water features in them. When I first started my way through the dream, these rooms were full of people speaking German (????), but the longer the dream went on, the people started turning into dogs and then there was a big musical number with poodles on swings and schnauzers doing synchronized swimming. To this day I have NO earthly idea what that was about. 🥴

the hanged man: favourite movie soundtrack?

I eat up movie soundtracks, but the TWO that I probably enjoy the most as whole albums are the ‘Moulin Rouge’ and ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?��� OSTs! Both amazing, vibrant, camp movies with incredible soundtracks.

I Work on the Day to Wed Nes

And again I try to be clever . . . Hello and welcome--to another WIP! Life is slowly sorting itself out and, in the mean time, I've been doing my damnedest to write more of my next chapter. This week I shall knight--I mean tag @thequeenofthewinter @sneaksandsweets @theroyalthornoliachronicles and @blossom-adventures! Grace my humble eyes with your works, if you dare!

Vigdis grabbed her pack and dug through its contents. Eventually she retrieved the needle, string, salt, and cloth she sought, then tossed the bag aside. She shoved the cloth into her mouth. Buckles were unclasped and Vigdis worked with only one hand to take off her top. She bit deep into the cloth as pain throbbed her shoulder. She exhaled sharply once she was free of her armour and threw it aside.

With the cloth clenched between her teeth, she grabbed and threaded the needle. She set it down momentarily and scooped a handful of salt, which she rubbed over her wound. She sucked air in sharply. The salt was as coarse as rocks and stung like a thousand wasp stings. She snatched her needle again and, without hesitation, began to knit her skin back together.

A sigh reached her ears. Vigdis paused and glanced up to find Serana, who sat near her with a frown.

“I learned a healing spell for this reason,” she huffed.

Vigdis merely gave her a look then refocused her attention back to the stitches. She was halfway done—then stopped again when Serana’s shadow loomed over her. Her lips curled back to snarl at the vampire. Serana, however, wasn’t swayed by the warning, and instead moved closer.

“Do you want an infection?” Serana asked seriously.

The hunter, annoyed, spat out the cloth so that it dropped into her lap.

“I’ve done this a million times,” Vigdis growled, exasperated with the vampire’s accusation. “It won’t—”

“You think I didn’t notice it to begin with? I’m not blind—you left it untreated for hours!”

A tense silence settled over them, their stares as sharp as daggers. It seemed that they were at an impasse. Vigdis didn’t know how long they glared at each other for. Minutes? Hours, perhaps? But the ache in her shoulder worsened. Exhaustion weaved into her muscles and bones. She couldn’t keep this up anymore.

She looked away.

What’s your favorite decade?  I would say 1930. I love the Agatha Christie/Miss Marple atmosphere, I even tried to transfer it to my sims game! I would probably adore any other British novel/film/series set in this style, regardless of the story itself, that’s how much I love it.

Oliver de Thornolie from @theroyalthornoliachronicles

Oliver is a royal character with a lot of qualities (in every sense of the word), but who goes through some difficult episodes. It's interesting to see how we "become king", it's a theme I really like in our royal simblr milieu, and Thornolia brings it out well.

Ryland from @trentonsimblr

I've liked the character of Ryland since his first appearances. He's far from perfect, representing more or less everything you could criticise in a man of his social class (not surprising given the family he comes from). Despite this, he has made a lot of effort and is still fighting against himself, which is interesting and is the kind of character we don't see enough of in royal simblr families.

Empress Katalina from @officalroyalsofpierreland

A bit like Oliver de Thornolie, it's interesting to see how you become part of a royal family, and Katalina's character shows that. She even becomes a fundamental pillar, and I don't think her husband would have such a solid reign without her. The consorts have a huge influence on the monarchs, and it's particularly visible here!

There are lots of other interesting characters, of course! I was going to show more, but I haven't got the time in the end, so I'll stick to the rules 😗

My main story is royal story which features the fictional country of Simovia and its royal family as well as the royal families of Edenbrück (by @quiddity-jones) and modern Thornolia (by @theroyalthornoliachronicles). I also post other stories here - my next one being an AU story featuring my royal OCs and those of my good friends in a story set in 1970s music industry. 

Important note: my stories contain mature and heavy storylines and are not suitable for younger readers. This includes the following and more: crude language, violence, alcohol, drugs, mental health, domestic and international conflict, politics, trauma, and mild sim-spice within Tumblr’s guidelines. I do my best to put the triggering content under the cut and tag it appropriately. If you have questions or comments about the story, my asks are open, just don’t be rude.

When Zelda left Josephine’s apartment she had forgotten that it was Mardi Gras day. At any other point in her life, she would have been enthralled. Never before had she seen so many people in such a giddy, maddened state. Their cheers caused a constant ripple through the streets, which were full of magnificent floats reflecting the sun in their golden adornments.

But today Zelda was uninterested in the statuesque man sitting atop the float or the masked riders soliciting cheers amongst the crowd. She had only one thing on her mind, so she ran through the thronged streets without a sideways glance.

The carnival crowds were oblivious to her panicked eyes and unstyled hair. She may as well have been another wild, emboldened celebrant for whom on this ultimate and final day of revelry, the laws of society did not apply.

But she felt so perfectly, horribly foolish about the way she had acted that she knew she could never be that obliviously carefree again. She had been galivanting through this city with no regard to what lay all around her: the tangled, oppressive reality that made up the very fabric upon which all their lives stood.

Antoine was right, she didn’t understand, because she hadn’t wanted to understand. She had gone to that club night after night for over two years, never asking questions because she didn’t want to know the answers, ignoring the obvious bigotry because she didn’t want to be aware of all of the pain. She had ignored Antoine’s discomfort at those parties, caught up in being the starlet and woe to have her own fanciful view of their world ruined.

So she ran through the crowds, oblivious to the glass beads whizzing above her head and the drunken, cheering celebrates vying for them. She ran as fast as she could to get to Antoine before she lost him for good.
