ok ok as someone who's made yarn tails before here's some advice:

USE HIGH QUALITY YARN. Red heart works in a pinch but if you can get something slightly pricey-er I promise it pays for itself in the long run.

S T R A I G T E N IT!!! ESPECIALLY if you are using cheap yarn. It will mat and tangle way quicker if the yarn isn't straightened.

If you've already made your tail (using a tiktok tutorial where you tie strands onto the base), then run a straightener or iron over it a few times until it's smooth. Also adds a nice sheen to the fluff.

If you're using the wefts and base method then sew them on don't tie them.

Use a bead for the top attachment. Metal rings tend to slip open and lose strands and it is incredibly annoying. one of those clips with a solid ring works too in a pinch.

Use a slicker brush to brush the fibers, not a deshedding tool

this one I stole from tiktok: you can attach tails to a belt loop even without a clip. Safety pins can clip them on if they're light enough, you can use a paperclip if you slide the tail in on one end and slide it through your belt loop on the other (like a keychain ring). Rubber bands work too bc you can tie them on by folding it around the tail and then over the belt loop

You can make yarn tails in unnatural colors, and ones that aren't your theriotype. Tails are just for fun, as much as they are gear. My favorite yarn tail is rainbow after all and I love that thing to death.

Brush them after each use, especially at the base and ESPECIALLY if you've been sitting on them. detangle the tangles when they happen.

There is a growing problem in the alterhuman community with many people, but especially younger kids, buying tails from cruel fur farms.

     Amazon, SHEIN, AliExpress, and Temu are the three biggest sites that people purchase tails from. Every tail sold on these websites is sourced from cruel fur farms where foxes and other animals are subjected to horrific ab*se.

     The tails sold on these websites may say “fake” or “faux fur”. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS!!! Policies in China (where all of these shops are based) allow sellers to label real and unethical tails as faux fur or ethically sourced. The only tails safe to buy from these sites are POLYESTER STUFFED FURSUIT TAILS that look nothing like the tails you see many therians wearing.

The safest way to buy a tail that looks like the kind of tails you see many therians wearing is Etsy. There are three main options that I recommend.

1. Yarn tails, you can buy them from Etsy or watch a tutorial to make your own with yarn. They’re fluffy and they’ve got a nice weight that makes them feel real.

2. Faux fur or Mohair tails are also available on Etsy, you can commission them from sellers like TalesofMischief. Mohair tails look almost exactly like real ones, and Mohair is made from the hair of the Angora goat. It is not cruel because it’s just sheared from the goats.

3. Real tails, you can find many ethical ones on Etsy, but DO YOUR RESEARCH!! To find sellers and check if they’re ethical or not, you can search “fox tail taxidermy” on Etsy and click on the description of the individual sellers. Look for “wild foxes” and “foraged taxidermy”. Avoid any shops that say “farm raised”. The seller should find the foxes already d3@d, without k*lling them for the tail.

*if you have already purchased a tail from Amazon, Shein, AliExpress, or Temu, it’s ok because you didn’t know and there’s a lot of misinformation. Please donate to a foundation like saveafox.org and treat your tail with a lot of respect and mindfulness for how it came into your hands. It’s also good to watch a documentary about these cruel fur farms, but they are triggering and not for younger kids because of the graphic ab*se they show*

Genuinely im rlly sad that tails are kind of seen as a kink thing on adults. like a kid can wear a tail because they're young and it's not sexualized (dear god i HOPE it's not) but once adults do it all of a sudden it's "i didn't consent to your kink' babe it's a tail there is no kink here

Hot take: people who make therian gear (masks, ears, tails and whatnot) should take into account therians/otherkin who don’t just have $300 to throw out on gear. That people’s food for the week, necessities. I understand cost for materials or whatever but this is not accessible or budget friendly. Like ever. $50 should suffice.
