BOOK EMOJI BOOK BOOK BOOK BOOK
VEE LEMME TELL YOU ABOUT MY BELOVED ARISTOCATS AU - technically ive written scenes for it but ive not actually written the fic so i think it still counts
okay so it's sokka as duchess, zuko as thomas o'malley and katara, aang and toph as the kittens!!!!
so they still have a sort of fancy estate but it's a farm instead of a mansion?? but it's like. a Good Farm. idk how to explain it but proper farms with livestock and crops are lowkey for rich-ish people bc the maintenance and shit is Expensive anyway im off topic now
so Hakoda is talking to Bato one day about who he wants to leave the farm too, and naturally he says his kids bc obviously??? but HAHN (fucker) who is like. sort of the head of the staff is Mad bc for some reason he had this weird twisted notion that the farm should go to him because he's the oldest and he's Hakoda's nephew (idk man) so he's like "nah fuck that im gonna kidnap them" and then he does bc he's nothing if not dedicated to evil schemes so he oh-so-innocently offers to help Kanna prepare lunch and he spikes it with tranqs to knock them out and then just kind of chucks them in the back of the farm ute bc he's dedicated but bad at executing the plans
anyway so his idea is to drive the however many hours to the coast to stuff them in a cargo ship but the dude doesnt even make it a quarter of the way before his tires get taken out by a spike trap that was laid out by Jet and his Freedom fighters who are just a group of kids who live in a windmill and only really turn to thievery when they're desperate (or bored enough) and anyway theres that whole fuckery of hahn being like "fuck off??" and jet being like "no gimme your car keys" but its a little more chaotic and violent and in the drama of it all guess who just... slips off the back of the ute?? correct: hahns kidnapping victims
anyway so the gang wake up in the morning like "wait a fucking minute-" and sokka's lowkey freaking out bc he's the oldest and therefore the responsible one and toph is like "IT WAS HAHN" and katara and aang are like "well that doesnt sound right" and that's when zuko, who is singing like thomas does bc i said so, just appears, balancing on the bridge railing and then he sees sokka and he's like "oh. hello there?"
and then zuko, after a big ol' internal fight with himself bc "Ugh he doesnt WANT to help these random strangers but Aang and Katara seem so earnest and Toph is weirdly compelling in a gremlin sort of way and Sokka's cute", decides to help them find their way home
anyway so the usual stuff happens
they illegally hitch a ride on the back of a dairy truck then get caught and chased away
toph falls off the train bridge and zuko dives in after her
they meet the "geese" who this time is just Aunt Wu and that herbalist who told Aang to get the frozen frogs for Sokka and Katara that one time and ive decided to call her Miyu bc i know her cats name is Miyuki but you never really learn the actual Herbalists name and anyway yeah they rescue zuko's dumbass when he cant get out of the river
hahn realises he's going to need to steal his stuff back from Jet before the police find it and figure out that he's the one who kidnapped Hakodas kids- EXCEPT SUKI (roquefort/the farm hand) AND JIN (frou-frou/stable hand) overheard him talking to himself about it and they're like "it was HIM we have to stop him"
the gaang says goodbye to Aunt Wu and Miyu in town, and zuko takes them to the abandoned loft that he lives in so they can sleep and keep going in the morning
the classic "looks like scat cat and his gang of alley cats are here" except it's azula, mai and ty lee and azula's lowkey this little mad scientist who is also an excellent electrician who finally decided to fix zuko's power
so they all meet and mingle and become somewhat friends
THE CLASSIC "wow, your eyes are like sapphires" SCENE THAT INSPIRED THE WHOLE AU
alas the gaang returns home despite sokkas heart firmly belonging to zuko, who stands at the gate and watches them go until they reach the porch
they see suki in the top window and think she's waving at them, but right at the last minute sokka remembers that suki only ever comes inside to pester them, otherwise she's out working on the farm so what was she doing upstairs in the only lockable room??
*evil music* hahn knocks them out as soon as they get inside and ties them up and stuffs them in the barn and locks it
jin manages to shimmy out of the window bc she's smaller than suki and it always gets stuck half way, and tries to get into the barn but sokka manages to get his gag off and yells at her to find zuko
she fins him and then HE tells her to run into town and find Azula, and then he says "but say Zuko sent you or she might tase you" and jins like "SHE'LL WHAT??" anyway she goes and finds them and azula almost tases her bc jin cant remember zukos fucking name but then she's like "oh fuck zuko for this honestly" and then azulas like "oh wait okay whats going?"
so then azula and everyone run to the barn to find the zuko has managed to break it open (of course) and is now in the middle of punching Hahn and then EVERYONE is fighting hahn bc fuck him but while that's happening zuko unties the gaang and he and sokka kiss (finally lol) and then they all knock hahn out and stuff HIM in the crate he was going to stuff the gaang into
and then yeah hakoda finds out about everything and hes like "what the fuck" but zuko and his sister are welcomed into the family and azula and jin totally fall in love while azula is fixing the lights in the barn bc it takes ages bc they're old and she decides to just replace everything and re-do the wiring bc she's a perfectionist
anyway it's something they laugh about when they're older but at the moment zuko can't let any of them out of his sight and the kids all share a bed and they all have to watch kanna make their food or do it themselves otherwise they can't eat it bc i'm incapable of not exploring characters trauma after traumatic events (:
#my favourite au that i havent written yet but really want to write#asks#littlespoonsokka#vee#thank you So Much for giving the me chance to ramble about this#fic ideas

I brought up hanyang type 88 here and i said i’d explain, so here I am!!
okay so first off here’s a bunch of likely useful context about girls frontline. There is this feature in the game called digimind upgrade, or mod 3, where certain t-dolls can be upgraded past the normal maximum levels and stats, and at the same time gaining whole new abilities and also a new design. Basically a reinvention. There are like hundreds of playable characters in the game, and only a fraction will get mod 3s, typically the ‘main characters’ who are relevant to the major ongoing plot.
two things about getting a doll who has the ability to do digimind upgrade, to actually do that. One, is that it can be very costly in terms of in-game materials. like, maybe i just played the game wrong but I would have to grind for weeks in order to amass the materials to upgrade just one doll to mod 3. So even though by now there are dozens upon dozens of dolls who are capable of this feature, i’ve only actually done so with like, less than one dozen. A normal player probably has to be picky.
secondly, and this is the big one, every t-doll’s mod 3 comes with story cutscenes that become available for you to view upon upgrading them. Personally, i think most of the only worthwhile mod 3 stories are the ones that are associated with the actual major characters of the main story, especially since their upgrades actually happen in-canon and their mod 3 stories fill in blanks or otherwise expand upon the regular story chapters.
for the t-dolls who aren’t major characters that get digimind upgrades, their associated stories tend to follow a very basic pattern. They’re feeling like they are falling behind other T-Dolls in abilities or are otherwise experiencing a drop in confidence in their abilities, but then find the resolve in them to either change themselves or stand by an aspect of themselves, and this leads them to heading to the lab to get upgraded. obviously theres some nuances here and there depending on the character, but a lot of them, from what i saw, follow this basic pattern.
hanyang type 88 has a mod 3 but i certainly never wanted to see it. Firstly, using the feature at all takes up resources are kinda precious so i wasn’t just gonna use it on anyone. Secondly, she is just one of many one-off t-dolls that basically dont ever show up in any actual main story cutscenes or even funny events. Thirdly... you saw what she looked like in the linked post, i was in no rush to make use of her.
That being said, even if you don’t ever upgrade a t-doll, simply having them in your possession allows you to at least view the first of four parts of their mod 3 story, which nets you a small amount of those materials needed to see the rest (its a pretty fiendish system, huh o_O). I was lacking in some materials to upgrade a doll i cared about, so i just mucked around, eventually happened upon type88 again and decided that instead of just immediately feeding her to the furnace, I’d watch the first chapter of her mod 3 story. I watched it, it made me just curious enough to look further, and well. ...I got into it. Exactly what I got into, i shall now just elaborate and summarise the whole thing in my own way! Warning, it’s long!
(disclosure: my summary will bias towards my own preferred interpretation whenever any aspect is somewhat vague.)
The story starts with type 88, or as she is called by others in griffin base, Ai, working her shift in the base’s cafe, because what else would she be doing.
i hate looking at her! Anyway, its just a pleasant peaceful day and Ai is taking the logistic person, kalina’s order when suddenly in the middle of a conversation, Ai freezes in place and starts making worrying sounds.
kalina here and the t-dolls present in the cafe are concerned, and talk about how Type88 has actually been crashing like this more and more frequently lately, yet has not reported any of this to the maintenance crew despite the advice of her friends. They try rebooting her on the spot, but it has an even more concerning effect, because she starts erratically acting like she doesn’t recognise the others, and talks about how she is a maid in “Jiangcheng Cafe”. Afraid that her neural cloud (her mind) has been scrambled, they put her to sleep and bring her to the repair bay.
Its in the repair bay where they explain exactly what is wrong with type88. She is a fairly old doll, and her processing capacity has been severally clogged up for a long time. Her internal memory is overflowing because many large sections of her mind is filled with very large encrypted files (memories that she stored away). she is likely to keep crashing and possibly even cease functioning entirely one day if those encrypted files are not deleted, but nobody is really keen on just deleting parts of her mind without her consent. For now, kalina just opts to try and decrypt the files and see what they are.
And from here, we watch type88 memories from her perspective. Sort of. Kind of. It gets complicated later but for now, we view the first memory of her life, not as a combat t-doll type88, but...
...as 59898, a doll designed to be what is basically a ‘crash test dummy’ for testing artillery technology in a research station. With a purpose like this, 59898 has an (ostensibly) rudimentary AI. Her learning ability is intended to be used to better aid the results of their testing, but she also knows how to understand and even imitate specific human gestures in order to better respond to instructions or conversation, even though she herself has no voice module to speak with. She is assigned to assist one specific person.
first off, i was pretty shocked right off the bat that this story above so many others actually has unique assets to it. The above two sprites don’t show up anywhere else in the game, i don’t think. Secondly, this woman’s name is only ever spelled with those white squares, so I’m stuck with having to just calling her ‘the pilot’, as dry as that sounds... I just don’t want to type out weird characters every time, or call her ‘triple cube’...
Anyway, so 59898 is assigned to help this woman in testing artillery tech (stuff like mechs and tanks). I should mention really quick that in the game’s story, during this point of time is when world war iii is happening, but that’s just a backdrop for robots to eventually gain more prominence. Anyway, we move on to the second memory, where some time has already passed. At the beginning of this memory, the pilot is visibly depressed, which 59898 takes note of.
Her ‘comfort mode’ consists of patting the pilot on the head, who while surprised, actually is grateful. She feels comfortable enough to talk about her worries aloud to the doll, mentioning how she is a war refugee and has to make a living in the research base because she can’t go back to her home in china, at least not before making enough money for a very expensive and exclusive train ticket. She continues to talk at length to the doll...
...not that the test doll is capable of responding to anything she says. The pilot insists that she’s happy just to have someone listen to her though, since she feels like she can’t really express her feelings to any other person on the base. Despite that-
That aside, the pilot says that referring to 59898 by her serial number all the time feels a bit weird, so she decides to give the doll a name. (I sure wish the story would give this woman a name too, other than ‘three white squares’ but oh well...)
She talks more with Jiangcheng Ai, or just Ai, after that, asking her if she’d like a change of clothes sometime, like some casual clothes, or an old maid outfit from an old cafe job she used to have (I guess they had to throw in any explanation for that outfit somehow) Point is, more and more time passes.
As time passes though, and we go into the third memory, the pilot brings up complaints to her superiors about how the more recent testings, becoming more increasingly intense and frequent, are putting a great strain on Ai, and even repairs can only help maintain her chassis so much. She insists on wanting to take Ai’s place in the testing, but they refuse because, well, Ai’s entire purpose is to take the strain of these tests so that the human pilot doesn’t have to, and the doll is just a tool there to pave the way for the pilot to eventually take over the mech in action
The next time Ai wakes up from her most recent repairs, the pilot is there to greet her, and Ai can tell straight away that she’s unhappy and tries to comfort her again. The pilot is not surprised at this and talks about how this is how Ai has been since they first met. She goes on to say how all the other people on the base don’t know her half as well as Ai does. Ai tries to understand and determine what the pilot’s intentions with saying all this is, but she cannot do so and can only listen while offering ‘executing - affirmative nod’.
The pilot talks about how once the war is over, she’d like to take Ai back home with her, where they could go to all sorts of gatherings, and the pilot would introduce Ai to her friends.
Ai reviews her personal data, confirming that she has no owners or obligations other than the pilot, so she executes another affirmative nod, and the pilot says this:
As Ai tries and fails to further determine this, something bad happens! if you’ve read this far, i’m sure you’ve already guess what happens next...
At that exact moment, a warning goes out and the research base is being attacked by nebulous enemy forces. With no time to talk anymore, both the pilot and Ai head out into their first real fight.
They spend a good long while repelling enemy forces, working well together and apparently using all sorts of wacky anime weaponry like beam blades and whatever ‘retrograde evasion’ is!
obviously though, you already know this isn’t going to end well for them... When the pilot takes a breather, Ai moves to protect her, but at a critical moment, a sudden high-speed projectile comes her way. In the next instance there’s a crash, and we move onto another memory. Where its all fire and debris, and Ai can’t move.
^ this text box actually repeats several times, indicating that she is repeating her scan for life signs over and over. She gets an internal warning from her systems (differentiated with red text) that she has insufficient power and it warns her to immediately cease ineffective operations. [Unable to detect owner life signs] repeats again.
At this point, uuuuh, its a little stupid actually? because two humans show up, reusing generic ‘bad guy’ sprites from other events that don’t match the current environment and situation at all (one is in a suit and the other is in casual clothes). but the reason they’re here is to provide exposition out loud about what happened. It looked like the human’s mech took a hit for the doll and was blown to bits, though they talk about how that doesn’t make any sense.
Ai at this point tries to execute a bunch of different actions like hugging [target not found] and screaming [no relevant module] but they all fail, and her internal systems tell her that her power is running out and she will cease to function in 30 seconds.
So in those last 30 seconds, Ai decides to quickly review her internal files. the damage she took has corrupted her memories and she doesn’t have the time to properly go through them, so she executes a ‘simulated processed records’, which basically mean she’s just filling the blanks of those memories herself with simulations.
And I have to say. I was decently into and enjoying this little story so far, but its this part that’s the reason i became forced to make this stupid giant post. the first ‘memory’ loads up, and we see the pilot.
Different ‘memories’ of the days spent with the pilot are loaded back to back, each are very short and only last a few lines. Across these files, the two of them talk comfortably with each other, Ai is invited to go get coffee with her, the pilot talks about how going alone is boring and would rather spend time with Ai, Ai saying back with her own words that she always likes spending time with her, etc etc etc.
And then finally, she loads one last ‘memory’, from earlier that same day, before the explosion and the fighting.
and she shuts down.
i passed by this scene the first time all calm, but an hour or so later when I was in the bathroom replacing shampoo bottles, i started thinking about it and I literally started sobbing. And then again later that night when i was in bed. I hate this game!!
so that’s the ‘end’ of that, and the next scene opens, once again in griffin base’s cafe, except...
Ai is sporting a brand new (ugly) look. She says she’d like to take kalina’s order but she was just leaving on other business, as she likes keeping herself busy with all sorts of work around the base ever since she got upgraded into a gundam gajinka. and after she leaves, kalina talks with the other dolls about how Ai used to have some cache issues because her neutral cloud was too full, but upgrading into this new chassis easily fixed that and even allowed her to make use of her old locked away abilities.
Because of the way this scene in the cafe opens up exactly like the very first one at the beginning, it makes me believe that this final scene is also a simulated ‘memory’, that is, Ai filling in the blanks of her corrupted memories with what she wishes to be reality. And i feel confident in believing that because after the scene fades to black, we see more of her internal system monologue.
She (the system) says that the priority execution is to preserve those encrypted memory logs. She does so, and the neural cloud upgrade is complete with confirmation of no loss files. With no risk of deletion in this new form, she executes the command to unlock the encrypted memories. And finally...
[spiderbread dies]
i still wouldn’t use her in gameplay because i can’t stand looking at her design but i told you all i eat up robot with feelings stuff and this is like prime example of exactly that... and if i didn’t make this post, i think my own neutral cloud’s cache would be at risk of overflowing x_X!

speaking of train horror. there was a really iconic monster movie short from my childhood. where like a group of tired and drained ppl on their way home to the last train stop(part of the newest and most sophisticated train in metro manila).
surprisingly it doesn't stop to let them off. theres no one in the drivers booth anymore. it barrels straight to the distant maintenance station thats weirdly empty. but there is something waiting for them.
its such a straightforward and safe ride but every now and then i think of it when i take that very same line hahaha. theres the epilogue where like hush hush maintenance ppl come in to clean up the gory train after the incident. and the line is just back to business as usual like nothing happened. haunts me.
train horror yessss that sounds so chilling especially as the line goes back to business.....
kind of nails why I think trains are a really good setting for horror because lots of times there's this scrabble to make this Place the characters are trapped inescapable and you have to give some leeway as to why they don't just leave. it also means you get the "no signal" "heavy storm" a lot. which don't get me wrong I LOVE..
however being on a train nails all of those without trying. not having connection on the train? yep. doors locked? it's going somewhere you don't want? well tough trains don't work like cars. there's just so much to play with.
thanks for sharing the movie with me! it sounds great!

TG: i really
TG: dont want to be alone?
TG: i dont have any friends karkat
CG: DAVE.
CG: I AM YOUR FRIEND.
TG: hes all i have
CG: THAT’S NOT EVEN REMOTELY A TRUE THING.
TG: it is
CG: I MEAN I MIGHT NOT COUNT BECAUSE I’M MORTAL.
CG: SO IF YOU’RE GOING SUPER CATASTROPHIZING BIG PICTURE THEN YEAH I’M NOT GONNA BE AROUND FOREVER.
CG: BUT ROSE AND JADE EXIST, DUDE.
CG: THEY ARE ALSO FUNCTIONALLY IMMORTAL.
TG: they dont talk to me any more
TG: ive invited them over a few times
TG: john gets like
TG: jealous
CG: JOHN GETS JEALOUS.
CG: OF YOU TALKING TO ROSE AND JADE.
TG: he
TG: kind of has meltdowns whenever i pay attention to anyone thats not him
TG: but he cant help it
TG: i mean i can understand being insecure im trying to be sympathetic
CG: WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE MELTDOWNS?
TG: he just gets really cold and angry at me
TG: doesnt talk to me
TG: id prefer he talk to me
TG: so i dont talk to anyone else so hell keep talking to me
CG: DOES HE HAVE OTHER FRIENDS? PEOPLE HE TALKS TO OUTSIDE THE RELATIONSHIP?
TG: yeah
TG: mostly other versions of me
TG: which feels great by the way i love it when he does that
TG: i guess im a jealous asshole too
CG: OK, LISTEN.
CG: IF I SAY SOMETHING WILL YOU PROMISE NOT TO FLIP OUT.
TG: can i remain perched on the handle even if i dont pirouette
CG: YEAH, THAT WORKS.
CG: ALRIGHT HERE’S THE THING.
CG: TAKE A DEEP BREATH:
CG: JOHN HAS ISSUES.
TG: no fuckin duh
TG: dont we all
CG: UH, NO.
CG: NOT THE KIND OF ISSUES YOU ARE DESCRIBING, NO.
TG: obviously we cant all have the same issues
TG: but we all do have issues
CG: GETTING COLD AND ANGRY DOESN’T SOUND LIKE A MELTDOWN AT ALL IT SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING THAT IS VERY EASILY CONTROLLED.
TG: ok maybe i am the one having meltdowns
CG: WHEN HE’S UPSET BECAUSE YOU TALK TO OTHER PEOPLE DOES HE ACT COLD AND ANGRY TOWARD EVERYONE HE TALKS TO?
CG: OR JUST YOU?
TG: just me
CG: OKAY, SEE, THEN IT’S SOMETHING HE CAN HELP.
CG: IF IT WAS TOTALLY OUT OF HIS CONTROL THEN IT WOULDN’T BE DIRECTED AT A SPECIFIC PERSON.
TG: what if its out of his control because its our relationship though
TG: its kinda different from everything else isnt it??
TG: so
CG: I KIND OF FEEL LIKE YOU’RE REACHING.
CG: THERE ARE WAYS FOR HIM TO LET YOU KNOW HE’S UPSET WITHOUT BEING A FROTHING DOUCHENOZZLE.
CG: SEE: TALKING ABOUT THINGS.
CG: I MEAN EVEN IF HE TALKED TO YOU ABOUT IT I’D STILL SAY HE HAS ISSUES BECAUSE BEING THAT FANATICALLY JEALOUS IS KIND OF. UH.
CG: BUT AT LEAST IT’S BETTER THAN BEING PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE!
TG: we do kind of talk about it
TG: and like when we talk about it we seem to reach amicable agreements about what needs to be better
CG: SO WHAT DO YOU GUYS AGREE NEEDS TO BE BETTER?
TG: uh
TG: great this is gonna sound shit
TG: that i just need to remember he loves me and that as long as hes here im not alone
CG: …
TG: a lot of agreements about mental actions i need to be taking but not really any other actionable items
CG: OK I NEED TO SAY ANOTHER THING THAT MIGHT FREAK YOU OUT.
TG: im kneading my temples
TG: what
CG: REST ASSURED I’M ALSO KNEADING MY TEMPLES.
CG: IT SOUNDS LIKE HE’S ABUSING YOU.
TG: oh fgudjfg
TG: no
TG: no he isnt
CG: DAVE
CG: BREATHE
CG: OK?
TG: no
CG: I COULD BE WRONG, I AM JUST GIVING YOU THE IMPRESSION I HAVE RIGHT NOW.
TG: thats not even remotely whats happening here you cant say that
TG: yeah
CG: OKAY.
TG: you dont know what were like
TG: he leaves me really sweet notes
TG: he buys me flowers
TG: he tells me nice things
CG: I AM STILL ABSOLUTELY NOT CONTESTING THAT YOU GUYS LOVE EACH OTHER.
CG: OKAY?
TG: ok
CG: I’M JUST SAYING THAT A LOT OF THIS IS REALLY WORRYING.
CG: AND I GET THAT IT’S HARD TO SEE THAT IT’S WORRYING OR WHY IT’S WORRYING SINCE YOU’RE IN THE MIDDLE OF IT RIGHT NOW.
CG: SO I’M JUST TELLING YOU WHAT I’M SEEING. AND YOU’RE RIGHT THAT I AM NOT IN THE ACTUAL RELATIONSHIP, SO MY IMPRESSION OF IT *MIGHT* BE SKEWED.
CG: PLEASE DON’T SHUT DOWN ON ME.
TG: ok i
TG: i wont
TG: im still present
TG: what if this is the best i deserve though
CG: IT’S NOT.
TG: it is
TG: i should be happy i even get this
TG: i should be happy to be alive
CG: THAT’S RATIONALIZING.
TG: i think im really just ungrateful
CG: I AM PRETTY SURE THAT’S NOT THE PROBLEM.
TG: look maybe i do deserve this in all honesty maybe taking care of john even as he trains for the self-destruction olympics is how i can prove my worth to this world
TG: whos going to do it if not me??
TG: its not abusive if i can choose to leave at any time
CG: DRAGS MY HANDS DOWN MY FACE
CG: THAT’S ALSO NOT EVEN A TRUE THING
CG: AND BESIDES IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU CAN’T CHOOSE TO LEAVE!
CG: BECAUSE YOU’RE CUT OFF FROM ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS!
CG: AND COMMUNICATION WITH ANYONE WHO ISN’T HIM!
CG: YOU’RE COMPLETELY DEPENDENT ON HIM FOR COMFORT AND SAFETY AND SANITY SO OF COURSE YOU’RE NOT GOING TO CONSIDER LEAVING AN OPTION.
TG: ok um fuck
TG: lets not zoom out so much
CG: ZOOM OUT.
TG: theres nothing i can do about
TG: well
TG: i just
TG: i want to make this work can we please just focus on how i can make this livable
CG: YOU NEED TO TELL JOHN THAT YOU’RE UNHAPPY AND WHY YOU’RE UNHAPPY.
CG: AND IF YOU FEEL UNSAFE DOING THAT THEN YOU NEED TO DO IT WITH A MEDIATOR THERE.
CG: AND YOU NEED TO FIND OUT IF HE’S WILLING TO LET GO OF HIS HANGUPS AND CHANGE OR NOT.
TG: i cant
TG: you just have to give me some jedi mindtricks to play on myself so im not as affected when things dont go my way ok
CG: IT SOUNDS LIKE ALL THE RELATIONSHIP TALKS YOU’VE BEEN HAVING HAVE BEEN ABOUT *HIS* ISSUES WITH *YOU*
CG: AND IT’S WELL AND GOOD THAT HE FEELS COMFORTABLE EXPLAINING THE THINGS THAT MAKE HIM UNCOMFORTABLE
CG: BUT THAT HAS TO BE A TWO WAY STREET.
CG: BOTH PARTIES NEED TO BE WILLING TO COMPROMISE.
TG: i cant
TG: i cant do that
CG: OH MY GOD.
CG: LET ME GIVE THIS TO YOU STRAIGHT.
CG: THIS DYNAMIC CANNOT CONTINUE AS IT IS.
CG: THE RELATIONSHIP EITHER NEEDS TO END OR JOHN NEEDS TO BE WILLING TO FIX HIS END OF THINGS.
TG: karkat i cant tell him that i am unhappy
CG: DAVE.
TG: i have in the past
CG: THERE IS NO COMBINATION OF WORDS YOU CAN TELL YOURSELF THAT’S GOING TO RATIONALIZE ALL OF THIS SO HARD THAT IT MAKES YOU HAPPY.
CG: YOU CAN KEEP LYING TO YOURSELF AND IT’S GOING TO KEEP MAKING YOU FEEL FUCKING MISERABLE.
CG: BECAUSE YOU’RE GOING TO WONDER WHAT YOU’RE DOING WRONG WHEN YOU’RE PUTTING SO MUCH INTO THE RELATIONSHIP AND YOU STILL FEEL SO SHITTY ABOUT IT.
CG: AND HIS BEHAVIOR IS STILL GOING TO HURT YOU BECAUSE HE’S NOT TREATING YOU FAIRLY.
CG: AND THE ONLY WAY YOU’RE GOING TO RATIONALIZE HIS BEHAVIOR IS IF YOU KEEP TELLING YOURSELF THAT YOU DESERVE IT.
CG: AND THAT’S GOING TO MAKE YOU CONTINUE FEELING LIKE A GARBAGE DUMP.
CG: SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE. YOU’VE CLEARLY TRIED RATIONALIZING ALREADY AND IT’S NOT WORKING OUT.
TG: karkat i cant talk to him about it and i need you to not make what im about to say a big deal because its not
TG: i have tried to talk to him about it before and he socked me in the face and
TG: told me i was
TG: i guess it doesnt matter
TG: but as long as i dont bring it up he wont hit me i need a solution that doesnt involve talking about how unhappy i am
CG: YOU NEED TO GET OUT.
TG: no
CG: NO DAVE I’M DEAD FUCKING SERIOUS.
TG: hes the only thing in this shitty world that makes me happy
CG: COME STAY WITH ME FOR A BIT.
TG: i cant
TG: he might need me
CG: OF COURSE YOU CAN. I HAVE SPACE.
TG: no karkat please listen to me
TG: i cant leave because hes the only person in the whole world that makes me feel okay
CG: DAVE
CG: YOU DON’T HAVE TO LEAVE FOREVER.
TG: i dont want him to hate me hes my boyfriend
CG: OR CUT OFF ALL CONTACT.
CG: JUST COME STAY WITH ME FOR A WEEK OR TWO.
CG: GET SOME SPACE TO BREATHE FOR A BIT.
TG: i dont want to be a burden on you
CG: YOU WON’T BE.
TG: how on earth could i not be
CG: YOU’RE GOOD COMPANY AND SLIGHTLY LOWER MAINTENANCE THAN A CAT.
TG: i dont know how to tell john id be staying with you
TG: he might break up with me if i do
CG: I CAN TELL HIM IF YOU WANT.
TG: …
TG: ok
CG: OKAY.
CG: I’LL GET THE COUCH PULLED OUT SO YOU HAVE A PLACE TO SLEEP.
TG: fuck
TG: karkat i cant hes really mentally ill
TG: i have to be there for him
CG: YOU WILL HAVE YOUR PHONE.
CG: IF THERE’S AN EMERGENCY HE’LL BE ABLE TO CONTACT YOU.
CG: AND IF YOU NEED TO GO HOME I WILL COME WITH YOU.
CG: I’M INSERTING MYSELF AS THE MEDIATOR. THAT JUST HAPPENED.
TG: no no no oh god that is literally the exact definition of a burden
TG: i dont want to be that
CG: LITERALLY NOT BURDENING ME.
TG: im sorry for bothering you i gotta go ttyl
CG: IF IT WAS A PROBLEM I WOULDN’T DO IT.
CG: DAVE
CG: DON’T YOU FUCKING DARE GET BACK HERE
CG: WHAT YOU’RE FAILING TO REMEMBER IS HOW MUCH I LOVE MEDDLING IN PEOPLE’S RELATIONSHIPS GOD DAMMIT YOU ASSHOLE YOU DIDN’T BOTHER ME AT ALL I SWEAR TO GOD
TG: you promise
TG: that this isnt some massive inconvenience to you and you dont hate me

Why There's No Such Thing as Hypnotherapy

Why There's No Such Thing as Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis is so ubiquitous it’s easy to miss
“I don’t believe in hypnosis!”
Robert looked satisfied and smug, as though he’d just rested his case by dropping it squarely on my toes. Clearly, he wasn’t one to be bamboozled with superstitious nonsense.
The house party had been in full swing and Robert, seeing a giant pair of ears (aka me) started making one way conversation. During a narrow crack of silence I’d made the mistake of telling him I “did hypnosis” to which he’d proudly thrown in his trump card: “I don’t believe in hypnosis”.
I could have pointed him to our free eBook on the research into hypnosis, but I had a sneaking suspicion my efforts would be fruitless. Instead, I asked him whether he believed in the unconscious mind. Beaming, he proclaimed, “No! I believe in common sense and logic.”
I was tempted to ask…
Did he consciously control his heartbeat?
Did he consciously plan each night’s dreams?
Did he consciously mobilise his immune system when he was unwell?
Did he consciously decide to blink when an insect neared his face?
And how, I wondered, would he explain why ex-servicemen and women experience horrendous flashbacks to wartime trauma, or why shy people blush when the social spotlight shines their way? Would he have tried to argue that these are conscious decisions?
I wanted to take the bait. I wanted to wipe the smugness from his face. I wanted to say that not just a little, but most of our behaviour is driven by unconscious processes.
Every second, our five senses take in an estimated eleven million pieces of information. We know this because scientists (yes, scientists!) have painstakingly counted the receptor cells on each sense organ and the nerves that connect them to the brain.
Yet we can only consciously process about forty bits of information a second. What this means is that large parts of our experience are unavoidably unconscious.
So did I regale him thus?
Well, no. That particular axe was ground blunt early in my career. I left the bait hanging and instead asked him to talk about what he did for a living. I listened (well, sort of) for what felt like the longest ten minutes of my life to a detailed description of his accountancy practice. Even as his mouth moved, his words seemed to fall away, and my thoughts drifted…
An unintentional and ironic induction
As Robert droned, I entered a kind of trance. I forgot to pay attention to him as my focus wandered inward. If he’d been paying attention I’m sure he would have noticed my cataleptic glassy-eyed expression – but he was probably too absorbed in his own story!
Boredom is a kind of hypnotic technique. Indeed, it was occasionally used by the great Dr Milton Erickson, especially for ‘straight-line thinkers’. When we deem that there is little for us ‘on the outside’, our attention strays inward.
This kind of disassociation and abstraction is key to the hypnosis we experience on an everyday basis. And it happens so often, and feels so familiar, that most people wouldn’t even recognise it as hypnotic.
Wishing and hoping and dreaming… and counselling
When you dream at night you disassociate from your bed to the point where you forget all about it. You are completely absorbed by whatever hypnotic scenario your brain conjures for you, as your imagination goes into overdrive. We don’t think of this as deep hypnosis, but that’s exactly what it is.
Hypnosis is a state of abstraction in which the conscious mind becomes less dominant and the powerful unconscious mind is more directly accessed. The unconscious mind is responsible for emotional reactions, immune functionality, physical healing, and the creation and maintenance of high-performance states such as ‘flow’.
As soon as a person becomes even slightly abstracted, as soon as their attention is split, they enter an hypnotic state. And, though you may not be aware of it, it probably happens to you every day!
Wandering and wondering
Have you ever been wandering around the mall and found that some piece of music triggered a memory? This is a kind of everyday post-hypnotic suggestion. You become less focused on the shops and more focused on a memory that had, until the music triggered it, been buried deep in your unconscious.
When this happens, your attention is split. This splitting occurs naturally. Hypnotherapists are trained to spot it happening and use this kind of natural trance as a gateway to deeper hypnotic experiences, if that’s indicated.
The same thing is happening when you dream at night or enter a deep hypnotic trance during a formal induction: your attention becomes split. And you become naturally more open to suggestion.
On learning and being suggestible
During hypnosis you become more open to learning, more suggestible. Unless a counsellor has their client totally focused on the present time and place, the client is probably abstracted to some extent: their attention is split. All you have to do is ask someone to focus on the past or imagine the future and you are inviting them to split their focus from the here and now. You are inviting them into trance.
Just as storytellers hypnotise their audience, people can also take themselves into a trance state when they tell their own stories. Especially if it’s about something highly emotional.
Emotions narrow and fixate our consciousness and are therefore inherently hypnotic. This naturally occurring trance is such an important concept in psychotherapy, yet so many practising therapists don’t understand it.
Everyday trances in everyday therapy
When someone in therapy is asked to focus their attention, of course part of them still knows they are in the counsellor’s office. But if they’ve been asked to talk or think about a painful event such as a recent divorce or a childhood humiliation, part of them may also be experiencing that pain in a very real sense. Their attention is split, and a kind of trance has been established.
To maximise the benefit of the inevitable trance states that occur during any kind of therapy, the therapist needs to know how suggestible their client becomes during these trance states.
But perhaps even more importantly, the therapist needs to know how to make sure these trance states don’t end up causing more pain.
During trance we develop unconscious associations that act like naturally occurring post-hypnotic triggers. Unless the therapist understands this basic psychological principle and knows how to use it, therapy may cause problems for their client.
Post-hypnotic response happening all the time
Hypnosis is a natural process, and it happens naturally – not just when it is induced by a hypnotherapist or stage hypnotist. Life is hypnotic.
I worked with a woman who would feel nauseous every time she went to the hospital where she had received (nausea-inducing) chemotherapy. She would feel like vomiting the minute she stepped through the front door, even though she was now perfectly well.
Association isn’t conscious, but it is powerful. Another woman told me how she had felt after receiving a year of ‘therapy’ from a therapist who had encouraged her to repeatedly focus on the pain in her life:
“After a while just sitting in his room made me feel tearful, before we even started talking. It’s like the chair, his face, even the time of day I went to see him would automatically trigger me feeling anxious and upset.”
Did that therapist understand the power of naturally occurring post-hypnotic association? Hardly. I bet he would have sworn he wasn’t doing hypnosis with his client.
There’s no such thing as hypnotherapy… or is there?
In a sense, you could argue that there is no such thing as hypnotherapy, since all therapy contains hypnosis. Or alternatively, that all therapy is hypnotherapy. But there’s good hypnosis and then there’s bad hypnosis.
It’s only when you as a therapist know how to use naturally occurring hypnotic states that the hypnotic self, this central part of what it means to be human, is no longer accidentally activated but purposefully utilised for therapeutic gain.

Personally, I’m not quite ready to make the term hypnotherapy obsolete! But I’m careful about how I use it.
When I talk about hypnotherapy, I’m not just talking about hypnosis. I’m talking about the purposeful recognition and use of hypnotic states to achieve benefits for the client.
This is something all therapists and communicators need to understand. This is also why going to see a well-trained hypnotherapist may be the best therapy you can have.
Suddenly, my thoughts snapped back to the present.
The diminishing power of CBT
Perhaps sensing my abstraction, Robert broke into my thoughts. At last, he seemed to be trying to appeal to something he thought I might be interested in.
“I read today that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has become less effective than before. That it’s about half as effective for treating depression as it used to be.”(1)
Shaking myself from my reverie, I agreed. That did seem to be the consensus.
Depression has a lot to do with expectation, which is almost always negative for depressed people. Hope is so important in overcoming depression, which is one reason depression is so responsive to placebo.(2)
In fact, a large part of the efficacy of antidepressant medications seems to be related to the positive expectation that taking them engenders. Hypnotherapy is all about knowingly creating positive expectation.
Robert seemed mildly interested, but it didn’t last. As the conversation drifted back to spreadsheets and tax returns, I sunk once more into the depths of my own musings…
CBT and hypnosis
Early on, the success of CBT seemed to rest partly on its reputation and the hype that surrounded it. But as time went on, the novelty wore off and so did the placebo effect. In this context, the benefit of the placebo is about the focus it creates – a hypnotically engendered state of unconscious expectation.
Expectation plays such a critical role in human experience, from misery to happiness. That’s why therapeutic presuppositions are part and parcel of modern hypnotic training: because they help shape positive expectation.
So if expectation is such a large part of CBT’s efficacy, why aren’t all CBT practitioners trained to use and engender that expectation, just as hypnotherapists are? It all comes down to the widespread lack of understanding when it comes to hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy is often described as a complementary therapy, but I have to question that description. Hypnosis happens naturally in all therapies and, in the cases of CBT and antidepressant medication, may actually be the main active ingredient.
Hypnosis vs hypnotherapy
Far from being ‘complementary’, hypnotherapy is central to the experience of human change and development.
A hypnotherapist is simply a psychotherapist who understands and uses this central aspect of human psychologyTweet
A hypnotherapist is simply a psychotherapist who understands and uses this central aspect of human psychology. And in so doing, they open up the possibility of treating physical pain, nightmares, PTSD, depression, panic, anger, and even addiction – because these conditions are all at least partly hypnotic in nature.
They all focus the mind narrowly and produce unconsciously conditioned responses.
Hypnosis is not a therapy in itself; it’s a natural state of mind that can be harnessed by well trained or naturally gifted practitioners to produce powerful healing effects.
In short (though I don’t think I bothered trying to tell this to Robert!):
Hypnosis is natural, and happens all the time, especially within any therapeutic context in which the focus is internalised and the room is defocused or ‘forgotten’.
For any therapy to work, even if the therapy itself works at the level of conscious processes, the therapeutic gain needs to be made unconscious. Only then can the person assimilate these changes naturally in their day-to-day life.
Hypnosis isn’t therapy any more than water is swimming. And as Dr Michael Yapko argues, hypnosis does not in itself cure anything. It is what happens during hypnosis that has the potential to be helpful. Identifying and utilizing clients’ natural hypnotic abilities enables the therapist to match the therapy to their needs.
As hypnotherapists we are working with an important and often overlooked part of the human being. Hypnosis doesn’t have to be obvious. It doesn’t even have to be intentional! But it needs to be understood, and it needs to be harnessed for benefit.
I let my consciousness come back to the room and found Robert still contentedly chatting away. Though I bore no malice, it was time to interrupt.
“I don’t believe in accountancy!” I said bluntly.
As he backed away from me he looked stunned… almost hypnotised.

Next Stop...Portugal!
It’s Thursday afternoon here in Luxembourg. As you know, that means Friday afternoon for me -with my balling four-day teaching schedule! It’s 10:45am and I just got home from the lycée. I taught one lesson this morning on the American Education system, and then did an hour of rubric grading with Liane for another class.
I think my kids really enjoyed the lesson today. They thought it was so interesting to compare and contrast what school is like in Luxembourg and the United States. I showed them some videos of cheerleaders, and they were surprised to see that the football-cheerleading-prom depictions of American high school in the movies isn’t all that far from our reality. My students in this class are the equivalent of high school juniors, and I have to say that they are one of my classes. I also have to point out here that I say this about every single one of my classes that I teach...why have I been the luckiest teacher on the planet to always have such great students during every chapter of my teaching experience?!
Next week, I am taking on a new class at the lycée. They are cinquièmes in the Luxembourgish system, which translates to 8th grader/high school freshmen in English. They will be the youngest students that I have had in Luxembourg. Their teacher is Marina, a twenty-something-year-old hipster teacher who could pass for an American with the most American English you’d ever heard from a foreigner. She studied at the University of Hawaii (are you as jealous as I am?) as well as the University of Rochester. Small world, or what? Needless to say, I am so pumped to be working with her this upcoming semester, and to be teaching a new level.
I’m currently writing this while throwing a backpack together for Portugal. That’s right, PORTUGAL! Taylor is teaching until around noon today, and then she and I are off! Our flight is at 6pm tonight, but we’ve planned to head into Luxembourg City early to enjoy lunch together and then wander around the city before heading to the airport this afternoon. As is our little tradition, the restaurant of choice for lunch is Pizza Hut. Sometimes you just need a taste of home!
I am beyond excited for our four day weekend get-away, and we have decided that this trip will be entitled “Eating and Drinking Our Way Through Portugal.” Taylor and I both have Portuguese students (did you know that the highest immigrant population in Luxembourg is the Portuguese?), and we’ve told them about our upcoming trip. They’re ecstatic that their American teachers are able to see their home country, and provided us with all kinds of tips and restaurant recommendations. Despite a great deal of discrimination that Portuguese immigrants face in Luxembourg, I have personally found my Portuguese students to be the most hardworking, good-hearted, and animated students that I’ve ever had in class.
I say this about every time I post, but I’m sorry that I don't find time to post more often. Life happens so fast here, and it’s impossible to share everything with you. Please know that I miss you as much as you miss me reading this, and I promise to be better with the blog to keep you on this wild adventure with me.
I’ve decided to divide the rest of this update into sections to give you the most information in the most concise and efficient matter (if that sentence isn’t indicative of some of my Germanic genetics LOL)!
Here goes it...
Current Obsession on Netflix: Outlander. I am completely invested in it. Some of the English teacher that I work with at my lycée were talking about it a couple of weeks back, and I wanted to watch it to have a perspective to add to the conversation. I’ve become obsessed with it. I’m currently on episode 11 of season one. I highly recommend to anyone looking to start a new series.
Currently on my playlist: Is music not a great way to think of people? Check out some of these songs. Know that on trains and planes 4,000 miles away, I’ll be jamming out to the same ones.
Lucky Strike [Troye Silvan]
J’aurais voulu être un artiste [Nicole Croisille]
No Matter What [Calum Scott]
Come Home [OneRepublic]
Fool for You [ZAYN]
Just like a Pill [Pink]
Balance ton quoi [Angèle]
American [Lana Del Rey]
Toute ces choses [Céline Dion]
Health: My knees are lower back are still really bothering me. I’ve seen a really good chiropractor here who has reset certain areas in my back and legs, but the pain creeps back shortly after visiting him. I’m currently not running or doing anything too extensive at the gym for fear of making matters worse. I was almost 15,000 steps a day, so I am at least keeping myself active in that sense. I think something is seriously wrong. When returning to the U.S. in July, I want to see some specialists to know what the F*$% is going on with my body. I’m 23 years old, and was running six miles a day this time last year. Weight gain nightmares keep me up at night, because I can’t exercise as much and in the ways that I use to be doing regularly.
I’m moving. Again. Yes, you read that correctly. This will be my third and final time being displaced from the fire incident back in September. The University Housing has informed us that we will be leaving our studios and move across the street to a smaller room without a kitchen. I still can’t cook, so the kitchen poses no problem to me. I am looking forward to lower rent, as well as having a new space. Taylor will be in the same building as me, so there’s not one thing about this move that I have the right to complain about.
I’ll have a green tea, please! As per my New Year’s Resolution post back at the end of December, I am actively trying to reduce my daily consumption of coffee. No, I haven’t completely given up the bean of wonder, but I am reducing how many cups I have a day and trying to not drink it on the weekends. While I always drink my coffee black, green tea seems to be emerging in the dieting world as the most beneficial caffeinated drink for health and weight maintenance. I do have to admit, I’m becoming a fan of the taste!
Upcoming travel: Taylor and I are planning a trip to Morocco for spring break. It will be my first time in Africa, and the second time for her. We haven’t booked anything yet, but have started to compare prices and look into the best airline deals. I am also dying to go to Switzerland, which will be the last Francophone country on my list to visit in Western Europe. After watching Outlander, I have also recently become obsessed with the rolling hills and fog scenes of Scotland and Ireland. Have you seen some of the pictures of these countries online? We are thinking of trying to head to the ‘highlands’ and Ireland for a four or five day weekend, but we have to see how our $$ situation is after Portugal and Morocco. I hope I wasn’t the only one who didn’t realize that Ireland was on a different landmass than England and Scotland?
Melissa Etheridge: After learning that one of my favorite lesbian chill artists is coming to Luxembourg, I pulled the trigger. As a birthday gift to myself and my sister-from-another-mister, I bought Taylor and I tickets for the end of February. I can’t even tell you the last time I went to a concert, but I am so much looking forward to it. We have been blasting her music together every time we hang out.
New Friends: Taylor and I have been blessed with some new friends this past week. We met a group of expats living here in Luxembourg from Turkey, Spain, and Sri Lanka. Among them is our new friend Thambo, who is an executive at J.P. Morgan Luxembourg. One of the most well-traveled and cultured people I have ever met, Taylor and I are infatuated with his stories and take on living as an expat in Luxembourg. We also have a new friend that comes from Normandy. His name is Mayeul, and he is just finishing up his third masters degree before going to law school back in France. He lives in the city, and Taylor and I see him a couple of times a week for drinks. The three of us are trying to plan a weekend trip somewhere close together one of these upcoming weekends.
Conclusive Statement: If I could be doing anything anywhere in the world right now, it would be exactly what I’m doing right here in this moment. And that realization, ladies and gents, makes me one happy dude. ZJ

Health insurance for individual?
Trying to find the best plan for myself. I am 30 yr old female self employed. I have an ok job right now so a high premium is not going to work. But I am fairly healthy and never really go to the doctor. I guess I need insurance for those what if moments that I hope never happen. Also I live in Pennsylvania. This is what I have found the HMO premiums are just too high but none have deductibles. The PPO plans all have deductibles but the premiums are lower. PPO Deductibles $2500 cost $188 a month,20% coinsurance $5000 cost $164 a month, 20% coinsurance PPO Advantage Deductibles $1500 - $142 a month, 20% coinsurance $2500 - $120 a month, 20 coinsurance Right now I'm leaning towards the lowest deductible advantage plan at 1500 @142 a month and a 3000 out of pocket max. It seems reasonable all the preventative care, primary and specialist are all copays w/out deductibles so say I never go tot he hospital I'm basically just paying a monthly premium and the copay. My issue is I have gone uninsured before and knock on wood nothing happened never even needed to use a cvs minute clinic. But as I approached 30 I realized maybe I should get health care for myself just in case. I do have the !500 set aside in an account that was supposed to be a splurge fund for vacation but now it may also just be a medical fund. Anyways, based on the above all co-pays are $30 and $50 for specialist. Do they sound reasonable?? Insurance is so hard to understand *sigh*""

CAR ACCIDENT WHOS AT FAULT AND DO WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH INSURANCE?
I was in a car accident yesterday a very minor one, the damage to my mother in laws BMW was just a cracked head light, and damage to theres was hardly apparent although the man said there was a tiny bump in door and a scratch. what happened was i was leaving a duel carriageway and on the side lane one lane was closed and a cone was in the road i swerved to miss going into work access (plenty of room as cones missing ETC cos of bad weather) then i pulled straight back out into correct lane having dragged the cone and seeming to leave it in work access... although all this happened in matter of seconds when i pulled back out i have hit the car that was originally behind me in the side door he obviously didn't break in time to stop when i swerved... i have a feeling because it was me that hit him that i am at fault? problem is i don't want to really go through insurance as it means both me and my mother in law will lose our no claims and because it was me driving not my mother in law excess is 600 as i am only a named driver.... I would rather just pay for damages if i am at fault than give my mother in law all the hassle...how much do you think it will cost? only thing is when i said this to the man he said he needs to notify insurance anyway and mine which i have been told will lose our no claims anyway... any ideas info please as im quite confused?""

My fiance got hit in my car is it an insurance problem?
I bought a car about 5 months ago and got full coverage insurance through State Farm with myself listed as the driver of the car and only my name on the insurance. My fiances car recently broke down so we sold it to salvage and canceled her insurance for it. I have two cars so I let her borrow the newest one today because its an automatic. Pulling out to turn a woman struck her passenger side with a minivan. I haven't seen it yet but the damage she says is very light a scratch and the front corner of the headlight broken. The other woman agreed it was totally her fault and provided all her insurance info but they didn't call the police to make a report :( So will this cause a problem when I call the womens insurance company or if I have to call mine if her insurance won't pay and who should I contact first just her insurance or mine and hers? I don't want to tell my company if I don't have to I turn 25 in a week and my rate is suppossed to drop big time and I don't want to screw that up.

Will a bike licence bring down car insurance?
Ok, so I'm 18 and am looking to learn to drive. I know that insuring a car is going to cost a bomb anyway, but will the fact I have passed a full motorcycle test (A2) help to bring my insurance down? Or will the fact I will have access to two vehicles (car and motorbike) increase my insurance? By the time I pass my car test I would have had my A2 licence for a year and have 3years no claims discount. Also I am looking at getting a 1.1 Citroen Saxo. Will a two door be more expensive than the four door to insure or doesn't it make much difference?? Thanks.""

Auto insurance wrong information!!?
Relatively, I am a new resident in the USA, I have been here for 18 months only, and I am trying to get a car insurance. The problem is the insurance companies give a huge discount for those who got licensed in the USA or Canada at age 16, but they do not consider other countries. For this reason I have to pay a ridiculous amount of money to get the state minimum requirements for auto insurance. In fact I have been licensed in my country since 1998.. I wonder what's the influence if I choose to answer yes when the insurance company agent asks me whether I got licensed at age 16 or not in the USA or Canada? What can I do about this insurance/car accident?
Recently, my husband was hit in my car while going through a green light. The girl didn't see him as he was going through and turned and hit him. Now we are fighting with her crappy insurance. They are trying to say we are 25% liable and they will only pay 75% to fix our car. They are trying to say my husband should have been more cautious going through the light. It was a green light! So, what, we are supposed to treat stoplights like stop signs now? How ridiculous. My question is, what can I do to get my car 100% paid for and do they even have the right to claim who is liable or not? Isn't that the cops job? My husband decided to be nice and not have the cop issue her a ticket. Was that a bad idea? I mean, she turned into him. How much more cautious could my husband have been? These Hounds Have Jobs Protecting Endangered Wildlife
Visit the docks in Auckland, New Zealand, on any days of the week and you might just see Piri puttering around, attired in a smart orange vest and leading about her work with the utmost professionalism. Observe as she strolls to some luggage and does a thorough examine, before clambering aboard a barge to take a good smell around.
Piri works for the New Zealand government in the Department of Conservation.
She also happens to be a pup.

Piri, a 3-year-old terrier desegregate and maintenance pup.
Piri is a ratter, a specially trained bird-dog who can sniff out rodents. Her undertaking be able to find rats and mice that are likely to hidden in luggage or in fissures aboard ships that are heading for islands around Auckland. These islands are home to some of New Zealand’s most threatened and beloved native species, like the country’s national animal, the extremely stout and very cute kiwi, and the world’s exclusively nocturnal flightless parrot, the kakapo.
One of New Zealand’s greatest protection accomplishments, these so-called “island sanctuaries” are entirely pest- and predator-free, permitting these peril animals to thrive without threat.
There are currently around 100 of these pest-free islands in New Zealand. Conservation puppies like Piri play a central role in keeping them safe.
“Conservation in New Zealand is often about removing predators that are killing our native wildlife, ” Fin Buchanan, technological advisor with the Department of Conservation, told The Huffington Post over Skype from his Auckland office last week. “Before humans, native species progressed in New Zealand in the absence of mammalian predators. But when the Mori first arrived[ from Polynesia in the 1200 s ], they accompanied animals like the omnivorous Pacific rat. Then a few centuries later, the Europeans came and fetched a whole emcee of other mammals.”
In the look of these new threats, New Zealand’s native species many of them, like most of New Zealand’s birds, are endemic, or discovered nowhere else on Earth had “no way to defend themselves, ” responded Buchanan. Many endemic creatures, including the laughing owl and the narrow-bodied skink, soon croaked extinct, killed off by these introduced predators.
Today, various endemic species are considered threatened in the wildernes. According to Dr. Bruce Robertson, a management biology prof at New Zealand’s University of Otago, mammalian predators continue to be “one of the greatest threats” facing the country’s native wildlife.
“It’s an ongoing question, ” he told HuffPost over the phone Thursday, “and it’s affecting expanses across the country.”

Conservation Dogs, A Brief History
New Zealand isn’t the only plaza in “the worlds” where dogs are be employed in management undertaking. In Spain, for example, bird-dogs are being deployed to find poisons to protect endangered wildlife in canada, and the Montana-based Working Dogs for Conservation civilizes puppies to “protect wildlife and wild places.” But the oceanic country is believed to be the first to employment pups in this way.
According to Buchanan, its own history of management dogs in New Zealand unfolds back to the 1890 s, when a conservation-minded citizen appointed Richard Henry employed hounds to find kiwi and kakapo, and then put these warned chicks on what he thought was a pest-free island.
“Sad to say, small island developing he opted was within swimming distance of stoats[ a kind of weasel] and these chicks were killed, ” Buchanan said.
Henry is said to have died lonely and disappointed, his island experimentation an self-evident failing. But today, Henry is recollected as New Zealand’s “first conservation hero, ” his methods the cornerstones of the country’s conservation work.
Not simply have pest-free islands come to play a central role in the protection provided for in native species, but New Zealand has become a “world leader in island pest eradication, ” Buchanan replied.
“Without these island sanctuaries, ” Robertson mentioned, “so many of our endangered species still living today would be gone.”
Since the early 1950 s, the New Zealand government has been using bird-dogs to help in the creation and maintained at these pest-free islands but for decades, the canines were distributed on an ad hoc basis.
It wasn’t till 1998, when the Department of Conservation supported the conservation hounds platform, that dogs started to be used more consistently for this purpose. Today, the initiative has more than 60 hounds, Buchanan articulated.
Some of these dogs are exploited, like in Piri’s case, to find predators like rodents, cats, ferrets, stoats and even the Argentine ant, an omnivorous, invasive insect. These pest-detection puppies, which typically terriers( bred for centuries to find and hunt small swine ), are able to assistance sniff out piranhas on the offshore islands themselves or can exhaustively check carries that are voyaging out to the islands.
Pai, Piri’s half-brother, is a pest-detection hound. Like his sister, the 7-year-old terrier concoction is likewise trained to find rodents TAGEND

Conservation dogs are too employed, as Henry use them, to encounter menaced species like the kiwi or the whio, a type of endemic duck. These animals can then either be transported to island sanctuaries, or heightened predator administration can be undertaken directly at their habitats.
Species-detection bird-dogs, as they’re so called, “can also help us monitor whether or not pest restrain is working in a certain place, ” Buchanan read. Dogs traditionally bred for chick chase, like Labradors, German shorthaired cursors and Irish setters, are typically used for this task.

A Nosy Business
Dogs have played an extraordinarily important role in New Zealand’s conservation endeavours, Robertson said.
“They’ve been a really prized resource. They can find almost any animal really quickly. They save age and money , not to mention species, ” he said.
Robertson added that bird-dogs are “really the best tool” to find some of New Zealand’s most threatened wildlife. The most efficient direction to find the “cryptic” and skittish kakapo, for instance, is to use a dog, he said.
“It’s all thanks to that black thought at the end of their faces, ” Buchanan interpreted when asked to comment on a dog’s keen perception abilities. “We’re learning more and more about just how potent dogs’ snouts are. Dogs can spot whether a person has cancer by sniffing urine tests, or whether a person is about to have an epileptic fit.”
“When it comes to pest eradication, we’re often looking for the cleverest animals the ones that are good at evading captures, ” he added. “For threatened species, some of them, like the whio, are extremely shy and difficult to find. That’s when[ a protection] dog is most effective. It can pick up those scents.”
Buchanan is himself a management hounds ex-serviceman, with a busines covering more than 40 times in the fields. He likewise happens to be the owner of both Piri and Pai. His longtime partner, Carol Nanning, is the handler for both dogs; Buchanan is currently the brain tutor for all pest sensing bird-dogs and their handlers in the program.

Half-siblings Piri( left) and Pai constitute for the camera. Their father, Jack, is another ratter and conservation puppy for more than a decade.
Buchanan proudly echoed several instances over the years when his dogs triumphed on the job.
In 2008, a rat was discovered on an otherwise pest-free island in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, but the shrewd rodent proved impossible to capture. So Buchanan brought one of his puppies to the island to search for the animal.
In under two hours, he announced, the rat had been located and killed.
On another, most recent reason, one of Buchanan’s puppies located a rat disguising deep in the engine chamber of a van heading toward a pest-free island. There was “no way that we would’ve known “theres a problem” if it wasn’t for the dog, ” Buchanan said.
Rats are responsible for the extinguishing of more native animals than any other predator in New Zealand, according to Buchanan. Here i am, for instance, the ship rat, which is an good climber and poses a serious threat to native fowls; and the Norway rat, which he answers is “taking out a whole host of native insects and lizards and beach birds.”

‘We Made The Problem’
The continued survival of New Zealand’s native species is eventually not just “important for New Zealand, but for the whole world, ” Buchanan said.
“Birds like kiwi only subsist here and nowhere else, ” he responded. “We New Zealanders owe it to the world to keep these animals that exclusively live here. These swine are only threatened because humans made the problem in the first place. We established their own problems, so we need to deal with the problem.”
Saving these swine will require a “multi-pronged approach, ” Robertson answered. “The best management method to utilization depends very much on the species.” But bird-dogs, he memorandum, will continue to be a critical tool in this fight.
Buchanan said there are promising signeds that the conservation pups initiative may be fortified in the coming months.
“We have about 60 pups currently under the programmes, but we have striven. This last summer and autumn, 12 islands had pests reinvade. Had we had better surveillance, we would’ve dramatically reduced those pest incursions, ” he said.
Last year, a group of stoats decimated a population of saddlebacks, a kind of endangered wattlebird, after the piranhas managed to sneak into an ecosanctuary near the towns of Dunedin.
“People examined and looked and looked for these stoats, but they couldn’t find them, ” Robertson withdrew. “Finally, a dog went to the sanctuary and it almost immediately learnt a nest of stoats. If they could’ve got a hound in there sooner, perhaps they could’ve thwarted this sad outcome.”
There are plans to set up a standalone conservation dogs force subsequently this year, with more pups and better funding.
“With more resources, we’ll be able to reduce pest incursions, ” Buchanan suggested. “There will likewise be more capacity to train handlers and bird-dogs, and to strengthen the program as a whole.”
The dogs can also be used for advocacy, he added, “to help remind people of their individual responsibility to check their gear and boats before they go out to islands.”
“These dogs, parading around in their vests, exceedingly businesslike and all, certainly capture people’s natures, ” he answered. “They’re the perfect discussion starter.”
