Sam and Bucky dance to this song after having to take refuge in a safe house during a particularly high stakes mission. Theres a record player and Sam makes this necessary senior citizen taunts when he catches Bucky's frequent glances towards where it sits on the wooden shelf. Eventually, Sam walls over to fiddle with it because Bucky insists on faking disinterest, but Sam really wants to see him being not-so-boring for once. It was rare to see the other man take interests in his surroundings, barring the hyperawareness that he had for every environment he found himself in.
Sam could almost imagine Bucky's robo-brain whirring to calculate all the exits, people, and vantage points for any possible threat. He never seemed to fully relax. Even sitting in a chair, he sat stiffly as if he was ready to leap out at at any moment. Sam could understand. He wasn't brainwashed and weaponized for 70 years, sure. But he has seen war and death. Things he'd rather forget. And he's felt fear. The initial fear of the thousand foot free falls, the fear of the police and the banks, and the fear of losing himself in it all. So, Sam gets the mental burden and understands how hard it is to leave once you're in.
So, he fiddles with the record player and pretends not to know how to work it. There's no other records visible, but luckily one is still in place. Bucky would eventually get irritated and put everything into place because he knows what Sam is doing. And he knows that Sam knows. Because Sam knows everything. Bucky assumes this from the amount of time the other man spends talking. So, he puts the record on like old times and ignores the lump trying to force its way up and the memories that resurface. Steve-
"You're lucky, man. Etta James, and a classic at that, talk about a two for one. Looks like our luck it starting to turn around, CP30," Sam smile toothily and Bucky wants to do do something to that gap in his teeth. He doesn't quite know what that is yet. Maybe punch it because Sam knows he doesn't understand that obvious reference. But Sam's smile soften to a close, and the corners curl at the edges as his head begins to sway with the notes. Like silk curtains, his eyes slip close in simple pleasure as if he was settling himself into the music.
Bucky watches and feels awkward. At some point, in the past, he would know what to do in the situation. He would know what to do with the violins and the soulful tones curling words of longing into the air. And tired fulfillment. Maybe, he would know what to do with Sam but he doubts it. Or at least how to...be himself. Maybe then they wouldn't argue for once. Sam opens his eyes and looks over to see Bucky who stood, stone faced and deep in thought. The focus of his hooded stare was intense and Sam scoffed. The other man was being broody again.
"Are you even listening to the music or did you zone out again?" He shifts, slightly elbowing his companion and Bucky blinks, his thoughts shifting back to the present.
"You started talking, I couldn't help myself," Bucky quips and Sam let's out a soft scoft that becomes a short laugh. Bucky feels his own lips twitch.
"You gotta relax, man. You could beat a piñata with the stick you have up your ass," Sam shakes his head. That wide tooth smile is back but this time its less cocky and a little more warm. Bucky rolls his eyes and looks away. He does that a lot. At least he understood the reference this time.
Sam sighs and stops the music. He replaces the needle at the original point and let's it go. After a few seconds of crackling silence, the song fills the room again. Sam slaps the back of his hand gently against Bucky's chest and steps back with a mischievous grin on his face.
"Wanna dance, old man?"
Bucky gently freezes in shock but Sam catches it because he expected it, really. Its why he asked in the first place. He wants to shake up that tightly wound exposure that Bucky has at all times. And he was bored. Bucky was not a talkative person and their current predicament left them without many sources for entertainment. It'd been hours since they arrived, yet Sam was feeling the time pass under his skin like an itch. He was exhausted and body weary, but it was better to stay awake so he could orient to the new time zone. As a result, he couldn't help but pester the other man.
"No."
Sam just kept looking at him. His gaze was sleepy, but a twinkle of the earlier mischief still shined through. Similarly, his skin reflected the warmth of the sun as it clung to the early evening and seeped through the windows. It was lucky that they got to be above ground this time.
The staring lasted a long moment. Like it always did. Then Sam shrugged.
"I know dancing may not be a particular talent of yours-" but before he could finish, Bucky was in his space and the rest of Sam's sentenced disappeared with some of his bravado. Bucky was fast and his sudden closeness wasn't expected given the man's reservations a second ago. The sudden adrenaline that had sparked through Sam's started to fade too. He wasn't scared of his companion, but the man's behavior was largely still a mystery to Sam which meant that sometimes he was caught off-guard.
Bucky raised his right hand out, brow arched expectantly, and Sam took it with caution. The man's other hand rose to hover a few inches above Sam's hip, and it took a few moments before he realized Bucky was waiting for permission. His cheeks warmed and he hoped his complexion made it less obvious. He gently guided the metal hand until Bucky settled it on the jut of his hip, the surface cool and smooth under his soft hold.
"Aren't you a gentleman? Thats that old-school chivalry," Sam teased. Bucky pulled their bodies closer and smirked wryly.
"I aim to please." A new song had started and Bucky briefly tore his attention from the heat he felt spreading along his front. He hadn't danced in a long time. Not like this.
The current song featured a masculine husk crooning affections for the listener. It was accompanied by the distinct, steady tempo of a piano. Bucky felt his body catch the music, the way he'd been taught, quickly adjusting to an appropriate rhythm. Sam followed without much of a pause, finally starting to settle into the feelings of sharing this foreign intimacy with the familiar stranger who was holding him so damn gently. Even so, Bucky gripped him firmly like he'd catch Sam if he even thought about falling.
It was...nice. Nicer than Sam (or either of them, really) had expected. He hadn't been held in who knows how long. He was too busy and had mostly outgrown flings, but it wouldn't be fair to a potential partner if he randomly left on long missions that required little to no contact with those who didn't have the clearance. But that was kind of an excuse. Since everything that had happened, Sam hasn't much felt like having others in his space. He was a social person and owned that, sure. But it was hard to open up authentically as much as he teased Bucky about his tendency to isolate himself. He tries to take the advice he regularly gives to the veterans he takes under his wing. Its enough to sustain his close relationships, including whatever he has going on with One Armed Wonder, but he has little energy to offer anyone else. He has to remind himself that thats okay.
Without thinking, Sam realized he had sunk his head into the crook of Bucky's shoulder. He had started to drift, still following the gentle sways of his partner's body like a boat welcoming the gentle rocking of small waves after a storm. Bucky hadn't said anything, luckily, so Sam remains in his position and enjoys the comforting sounds of soul that has wrapped around them.
He had finally put Bucky onto some real good conditioner after growing sick of the greasy tresses the man sported as the Winter Soldier. No judgement. Its hard to have a solid hair care routine as an international assassin for magic super Nazis. But now, it smelled like honeyed coconuts instead of the scentless, dollar brands he used to buy at random. Even though Bucky's hair was shorter, Sam still caught wiffs of it near his neck. It was more noticeable this close given the man's lack of cologne.
Bucky had noticed earlier when Sam's head dipped into his shoulder. Shortly after, he though he had heard soft snores, but the man's body had otherwise remained upright and solid like usual. He had continued to follow the pattern they'd set, so Bucky had just shifted his hand to his partner's lower back to provide support and kept their pace steady. Otherwise, he lost himself in the heat of Sam's hand and the confusing stillness that had settled in his chest. He felt...anchored. But that was Sam. He was strong and steady, and reliable, but just as capable of sinking as anyone else without the support he inarguable deserved. The support Bucky tried to provide.
Steve was gone now. He'd left the both of them to figure out the aftermath of everything that had happened. Bucky wondered if it hurt Sam like it hurt for him. He didn't blame his Steve; couldn't begrudge him that act of selfishness after all they'd been through. Without Rogers' strong presence between them, they had been left to scramble in the gap and reshape it for two. Sam had his family and Bucky had his therapist, but nobody could understand the them as much as the other, as different as they are. So here they are, slow dancing in a safehouse Rhodes had been generous enough to lend them on short notice. He was amicable towards Bucky, but the generosity was really for Sam. Bucky's neck itched, likely with dried sweat, and he sighed internally. He needed a shower.
The man worked his hand against Sam's lower back instinctually and the other man responds with a questioning hum tinged with sleepiness. Bucky doesnt have an answer so they continue in silence. The song had changed. It was a woman again. She was singing the Blues, if Bucky guessed correctly. He's been picking up more of the music Sam liked. It could be relaxing but full-bodied one moment or rich and thrilling the next.
So far, he has only worked his way up the mid-80s. Sam jokesthat his sensitive hearing isnt prepared for the young and hip tastes that dominate the charts, but he'll still sneak recent artists into his recommendations so Bucky isnt completely "out of the loop." Like always, Bucky would just roll his eyes, but now and again he closes them and try to imagine what Sam felt when listened to the music. Wonders at the connections the man shares with the melodies, and the histories curved into the lyrics. Some things, he couldn't ever understand, even if he tries. So, other times, he just listens.
Now, he's curled over his partner's slightly shorter stature, nose brushing the other man's temple. Sam was not a small man. He was built like a brick house. His upper body was strong, but his lower half was thick with muscle and padded by soft curves of flesh. Probably because he only does legs. Meanwhile, Bucky's own body is near the opposite: wide, sturdy chest that tapers to a firm waist and steady, straight legs. They contrast nicely, Bucky thinks. Filling up the spaces the other doesn't. For two people of their size, they still manag to fit snugly with little space between their bodies. Any closer, and Bucky isn't sure how he'd handle the proximity. He feels lulled into the calmness of the evening that had unexpectedly crept up on them in the quiet of everything around them, save for the music.
The two danced a bit longer, but eventually Sam's body grew too weary after the lack of sleep. With hesitancy, they quietly parted after the final notes of the song slipped from the record player. Bucky turns stopped the music while Sam flops into the nearby couch. His growing exhaustion does not stop him from throwing a smirk Bucky's way which the man met with his regular deadpan stare.
"Not bad. Not a single hip replacement necessary. I'd say thats a success for two old men." Sam quipped. Bucky stayed silent.
"You're not old," he finally said. He hadn't moved from his spot by the record player.
"Hmmm. Well, compared to you, 42 isn't that old." Sam lets his eyes close again but Bucky clears his throat, causing one of them to open in question.
"There's a bedroom upstairs," he explains carefully. They've been on the move for some time now with little time for real rest. If Sam was going to finally sleep then it should be in a real bed, at least.
Sam lets out out a quick laugh, "if you think you can butter me up with a dance-"
Bucky cuts off his teasing with a quick glare. If there was ever a moment being the Winter Soldier has served him, it was now. Otherwise, the heat he could feel trying to redden his ears would send Sam into a fit of hysterics.
"I did a perimeter check when we arrived. There's three bedrooms upstairs. All of them have en-suites bathrooms so take your choice," Bucky grumbles out, avoiding eye contact with his counterpart. The earlier stillness he had felt was slowly disappearing now that they were interacting again. His nerves were more taxed than before. He'll analyze that later. Maybe with his therapist, but she was kind of petty, so maybe not.
Sam's teasing smirk has settled into something a little more kind as he rises frim his seat and crosses the room to where Bucky stands. He roughly claps the other man's arm a couple of times before settling the familiar weight of his hand at the ball of Bucky's shoulder.
"I'm just messing with you, man. Thanks though. That couch would do my back in after being thrown by that explosion. Luckily, you were there to provide some cushioning," he says with that toothy smile. Before Bucky can respond, Sam bids him goodnight and slowly makes his way upstairs. Bucky watches him go, dry-mouthed and slightly confused. Once Sam has completely disappeared from view, Bucky takes in his surroundings and feels the emptiness of the room without Wilson's presence.
He'll do one more perimeter check then turn in for the night. Even he can feel the pullings of sleep. Maybe tonight, he'll dream about dancing.

semi-cataclysmic events | sambucky
Oof, had to get this one out of my system. Not beta’d, will post on ao3 later when I have time.
Summary: It took time travel for Steve to figure his shit out, so Bucky doesn’t think he’s doing too bad.
“So, you and Sam…?”
Bucky looks over at Steve and squints suspiciously. He looks infuriatingly serene, a small secretive smile on his lips. Ever since he came back, he’s taken the grandpa schtick and run with it. Even now, their taking a leisurely paced walk around the Mall while Sam is lapping them at a steady pace. Bucky’s fairly certain Steve could still run with the best of him, but pretending to hobble around really seems to amuse him more than it should. ‘Keeping up appearances’ he had cheerfully informed Bucky one morning.
Bucky doesn’t have much of an excuse, other than that they’ve actually got a break from missions and actually getting out of bed before 8am is enough of a sacrifice. Sam, as hardworking as ever, has a routine to keep up with and refuses to bend no matter how much Bucky begs. Its infuriatingly noble and warms Bucky’s heart.
“Me and Sam.” Bucky mumbles, kicking one foot so that his shoe makes a a scraping noise against the cement. Run or Talk. Two options, neither very appealing.
“Have you told him?” Steve asks, knowing full well what the answer is. “He’s waiting for you, you know.”
Does Bucky know? Not really. He watches Sam, who is steadily gaining on them for another lap. The sun is coming up behind him, and Bucky almost wants to take his cellphone out and snap a picture. Luckily Bucky isn’t that much of a weirdo.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Bucky sighs and slides his eyes over to look at his friend. “Stop looking at me like that.”
Steve’s eyebrows are raised, the wrinkles on his forehead pronounced. Its annoying that he can still pull off innocent when he looks like someone’s grandfather (He is actually a grandpa, something he’s quite proud of).
“Take some advice from an old man.” Steve ignores him when he scoffs. “Don’t wait too long, you’ll regret it.”
Bucky looks over at him, tight-lipped. He’s never asked, but he wonders if Steve regrets how it all happened. Sure he got his happy ending, but it still cost him. Friends, family and so much more. Bucky knows it wasn’t all sunflowers and roses for Steve, but it still stings.
“Nah,” He answered, looking at the reflecting pool. “Figured I’d wait until the next cataclysmic galaxy threatening event to go back in time and tell him how I feel.”
It’s biting, and meaner then Bucky meant it to be. He can’t look at Steve, his old man face will make him feel even more like an asshole. Steve puts a hand on his shoulder, heavy and comforting in a way he doesn’t deserve. Especially when he knows Steve is just trying to help.
“Sorry.” He says quietly. Sam passes them with a wave, he’s panting hard, and theres a laser focus in his eyes. Sam has about two more laps in him before he calls it a day. Then they’ll all go out for breakfast, pick up some balsamic vinegar because Sam wants a fresh salad for lunch and then head home for movies and cards. “It’s fine, Steve. Everything is fine.”
xxxxx
Everything is very not fine at the moment.
Bucky curses and ducks down next to some undergrowth. Bullets are flying and smoke is filling the air so densely that he can’t see his targets. It’s impossible to get a lock on where Sam is visually, and the other man isn’t answering his comm. Whatever element of surprise they might have had is completely blown.
This was supposed to be an easy job, but now Bucky’s worried about just getting out of it alive. He presses the button on his earpiece. “Get me a location on Wilson, now.” His voice is much calmer than he feels in the moment.
The Shield agent on the other side says that they’ve lost all contact and they're sending in someone to pick them up. It’s too late for that though, theres no enough time for Bucky to wait for them.
The shooting has died down, the enemy probably thinks that Bucky has either run or been taken down by now. Cursing he crawls from the bushes and begins to pick his way stealthily towards the base. He hates going in with a plan, but he hates the idea of Sam being dead more.
The bunker is built low in a valley, and the smoke has started clearing already. Theres a distinct lack of gun shots or even shouting coming from the area and the smoke seems to be coming from the building itself. Bucky frowns, his weapon raised as he stalks into the clearing. He sees bodies, near the entrance, obviously fleeing, but they aren’t moving either dead or knocked out already.
He hears groaning, coming from the tree-line, and he looks over. It’s Sam, his uniform is torn and his wing pack is nowhere to be seen but he’s alive. Bucky doesn’t hesitate before running to him, his heart nearly caught in his throat.
Sam is leaning against a tree, the shoulders of his costume and ripped and charred. He’s wrapping his own leg with shaky hands, and Bucky can’t quite tell where the blood is coming from, only that theres a lot of it.
“God, Sam.” He tosses his weapon aside and immediately crouches and moves into Sam’s space, waving away his hands so he can assess the damage. “Stupid. You’re so fucking stupid.”
“Fuck off, Barnes.” Sam says completely without heat. He’s smiling weakly though. It’s a testament to how shit he must feel that he doesn’t stop Bucky from bandaging him up. “Just jealous ‘cuz I got here first.”
His words are starting to slur, and his eyes are glassy and wet. Bucky grunts, and ducks his head, pressing his earpiece again. “Located Wilson, we need evac immediately.” He gives their coordinates and then begins checking Sam over for other injuries.
“Getting handsy there, buddy.” Sam sounds amused, but his words are starting to slur together and his eyes are drooping. Bucky presses his gloves hands to Sam’s face and shakes him just a little.
“Hey, stay awake for me, yeah?” Bucky’s voice does not crack as he watches the awareness in Sam’s eyes start fading. He catches him before Sam tilts over and curses under his breath. “No, no, come on. Don’t do this to me, Wilson. Don’t.”
He holds him tight, whispering into the side of his head until he hears the sound of a chopper overhead.
xxxxx
“Really, Barnes?”
Bucky nearly jumps out of his skin, not realizing he had almost fallen asleep in the uncomfortable hospital armchair. He blinks hazily, the lights way too bright and everything far too reflective.
“Over here, sleepyhead.”
Sam’s tired, but cheeky voice draws Bucky’s gaze. He looks over and feels like he could collapse right onto the floor. It’s been two days, Sam completely out for all of it and Bucky refused to move from his side. The Doctors insisted his injuries weren’t extreme, but Bucky was fairly certain that someone being unconscious for days was exceptionally extreme.
He reaches over and touches Sam’s hand lightly, carefully of the IVs he’s currently hooked up on. His face is ashen, and theres a bruise on the right side of his temple, but otherwise he looks okay. Bucky’s just so glad he’s finally awake.
“I know,” Bucky takes a deep, shaky breath. “That you are Captain America now, but you really, really don’t have to copy every stupid thing that Steve ever did.”
Sam snorts, and then winces a little. He looks at Bucky, his lips pursed. “Says the man who takes flirting advice from him. Trouble Man, really?”
Bucky can feel heat rising in his face, he had forgotten he had put the music on playing quietly in the background. It was one of the first things Steve had introduced to him to when he was getting back on his feet. He hadn’t explained the significance of the music at all, only that it helped him relax and stop thinking so hard.
He vaguely wonders if Steve ever figured out what Sam had been hinting at. Steve was always bad at picking up romantic cues like that. Luckily, that seemed to be one thing Sam and Steve didn’t have in common.
“Is it working?” Bucky can’t stop the blush, and once the words are out theres nothing he can do about it. This is happening, its actually happening.
“The music? No. That’s mea and Steve’s thing.” Sam says. But he smiles gently, tilting his head back so that he can look at Bucky fully. “But everything else? Me and you? Definitely working.”
The tension flees from Bucky’s body and he smiles, big and dopey and he’s so relieved he couldn’t care less. He notices Sam looking at him imploringly, one eyebrow raised in an okay, what are you waiting for? kind of way.
He doesn’t need more than that before he leans over the hospital bed and presses a sweet kiss to Sam’s lips. Steve would be proud. He finally did it. Only a semi-cataclysmic event needed.

~ Part 11 ~
Tumblr media
Bucky’s POV
“How could this have happened!?! I thought she was under security!!” I shouted at Stark as Steve attempted to pull me back by the arm. I knew it was wrong to be directing all my anger at Stark, especially after all he had done to save Luna in the first place.
Stark was quick to retort, “I am not the one who should be at blame here! You were the last person to see her before she left. So let me ask you this Barnes. What the hell happened?”
Steve stepped in between us putting an end to the argument, “This is not the time to be throwing around accusations! We have to focus on the matter at hand. Which is that Luna is gone.”
“Ran away, seems more fitting.” All heads turned to the figure leaning against the doorway. It was Romanoff, just come back from security central. “I obtained the security footage from the past few hours. While Luna may have disabled the alarms, she left the cameras alone.”
The red head made her way over to a monitor and synced up her tablet to show us the footage. The first clip was of the hallway just outside this room. The guard was there, this time standing tall and alert. Moments passed and the door creeped open a crack. Something was thrown into the hallway, catching the guards attention. By the time he turned back, it was too late. Luna had used the distraction to her advantage and swung a solid hit to his jaw. The guard stumbled and then Luna swiped at his face, leaving a nasty cut above his eye.
“What did she use to cut him?” Stark asked, clearly as stunned as the rest of us.
“Most crucial tip of any assassin: anything can be used as weapon. By the looks of it this room has no shortage of possible ideas.” Natasha replied, her arm gesturing to the multiple items in the room.
The next several clips showed Luna taking out guard after guard expertly until she finally made it to security central. According to Stark, the whole reason the alarms didnt go off when she left the tower was because Luna hacked into the system and shut it down.
“We underestimated her.” Steve said what we were all thinking.
Natasha nodded her head in agreement. “Not to mention she just had surgery. If she can take out this entire tower’s security while still in recovery, imagine her potential when she’s in full health.”
“Like you said she’s an assassin-” Stark added.
“- Ex-assassin…. Don’t forget she’s no longer Hydra.” My voice was clipped and no doubt my expression matched.
Stark threw me a look of pure venom before continuing. “Like I was saying, Luna is an ex-assassin who just perfectly demonstrated she had the ability to leave this tower any time she wanted. But she didn’t because she had no reason to. Now that she’s gone I wonder what her reason was.”
Even though Stark didnt directly look at me while saying it, it was evident he knew something was up.
Steve cleared his throat interrupting the thickening silence. “Buck, you mentioned a note when we first got here. That’s how you knew she was gone?”
“Yeah, I um, found it in a book in her room. I was only there because I couldn’t sleep and found it…comforting.” I tried my hardest to make it sound as normal as possible. Like any guy would just enter a girls room and rifle through their reading selections. Gosh that was real smooth.
I took the slip out my pocket, unfolded it and read the words that had initially made my heart stop:
To whom it may concern,
I’m sorry that I’ve left so abruptly. I couldn’t stand another second in that room or in this tower. I don’t wish for my departure to seem like I’m ungrateful for all that everyone has done for me. You’ve given me my life back and I will forever be thankful.
However in the process, some things have arisen that I must deal with on my own. There is no telling how long I will be gone but I assure you I will return to repay the debt that I so heavily owe.
Thank you all again. And farewell....
Luna
“’Some things have arisen’? What does she mean by that?” Natasha looked at the others in confusion.
“Barnes?” I could feel Stark’s eyes boring into the side of my head.
I sighed. Might as well just say it. “The Winter Soldier…killed Luna’s parents. A fact she became aware of when she experienced repressed memories during her surgery” I faced Stark and looked him dead on. “So technically your right. It is my fault. And so are a million other things. None of which I could control. This included. When I came to talk to her this evening she was….inconsolable. Nothing I said or did made anything better. So maybe I’m insane for saying this but…I think she did the right thing.”
Stark failed to mask his astoundment,”Are you insane?”
“He’s right” Natasha stepped in before Stark could continue. “ Those tapes proved she can hold her own just fine. Not to mention she was already living alone for four years prior to coming here. With that aside, we have to consider her emotional state right now. A sudden onset of traumatic memories right after you’ve woken up from brain surgery is a lot. More than even she could handle. We all have our ways of coping. My guess is she didnt leave the city. Just went somewhere where she feels most at peace. To help her get through this.”
“Oh my gosh.” I whispered.
“What?” Steve stepped towards me.
I help up the slip. “Theres a part of the note I didnt read to you. I thought it was just a rhyme that she wrote but I think its a clue. ‘The only place I feel free, amongst the stars I will be.’ Does New York City have an observatory of some sort?”
“The closest is Staten Island. Which is way too far.”
“Ok then….whats the tallest building in NYC?” I was starting to figure out where she might have gone.
“One World Trade Center. Access to the roof is restricted but it has an observatory deck.” Natasha replied.
“Thats it. I know she’s there.” I was out the door before anyone could question it. I heard Steve called out after me but my mind was already made.
By the time I made it to the center it was just shy of 9 in the morning. I had opted to walk the whole way through the night using the time to think about what I would say once I found her. After buying a ticket I made my way to the observatory deck, as always keeping a low profile.
I was surprised at the amount of people, considering how early it was. I searched the crowd looking out for that raven-haired bun I always saw on her. I walked over to the edge of the room passing a  few couples and families with some rowdy kids.
I peered out of the floor to ceiling windows, tilting my head to the sky. Even though the stars had disappeared hours ago I still felt a strange closeness to it all. A sudden movement caught my right eye and I pivoted to look. Thats when I saw it. A streak of dark tresses piled high ontop of a head and flash of tan skin as the body moved swiftly back into the crowd.
I took after her, delving between tourists and guides. I caught her just as she was about to enter the elevator to go down. “Luna!”
The figure turned and thats when my hopes shattered. The girl, a complete and utter stranger, gave a look of bewilderment as she shook my arm away. “Hey! Can I help you sir?”
“Uh, no. No I’m so sorry I thought you were someone else.” I stuttered out the apology. The girl gave me one last baffled look before stepping away into the elevator.
I returned to the windows, more frustrated than ever. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe she was never here at all. There was a couple not too far away from where I stood, silently admiring the horizon. What caught my attention wasn’t the unusual distance between them, but the girl herself. Or rather her hair.
Usually I don’t take notice to stuff like that. But this was an exception. It cascaded down her back in loose curls stopping just above her waist. I felt weird staring but something about it just didn't seem right. The guy beside her  walked away revealing her face to me.
I dared to sneak a glance and when I did I just about fell over. Luna didn't look surprised to see me, she just looked...exhausted. I saw her breathe in deeply but she made no move to walk over. So I did instead.
Just as I came within earshot she started to talk, "James, I have to apol–"
Before I could think about what I was doing I pulled her close to me and met my lips with hers. She tensed and that's when I realized I made a mistake kissing her. I was ready to pull away but then her hand found the back of my neck and she relaxed into the kiss.
My own hands migrated from her waist up to the base of her hair. My god this hair. Why on earth would she keep it up? It transformed her. So much so that I didn’t recognize her when I was initially passed her.
The kiss grew deep as we disregarded our surroundings and focused soley on the two of us.
“Hey you two! Get a room will ya?” A brutish voice yell from behind us. That seemed to snap us out of it as we broke apart. Luna was just as breathless as I. Her hand fell from my neck giving me the chance to grab it and guide her away to somewhere with less people.
Luckily I found a small alcove away from the mass. I checked behind my shoulder out of habit. Then turned back to be met with those bright eyes of her.
“James-” I raised my hand to stop her.
“Luna, I knew what you were gonna say and it is not necessary to apologize.” My hands came to rest lightly on her shoulders.
She gazed at me in confusion. “How can you say that? I practically threw a tantrum right in your face! I yelled and cried and didnt even give you a single chance to explain yourself!”
“I know. And initially I was incredibly upset that you did that. But then I considered the circumstances. I sorta know what it feels like to wake up from a surgery with your whole life changed.”
Luna glanced down at my left arm as I saw her visibly gulp. “James....as much as you don't want me to say it, I have to take responsibility for my actions. I probably caused quite the scene back at the tower.”
I couldn't help but scoff slightly. “Yeah, you could say that.”
Luna’s expression hinted at guilt. “Is anyone seriously hurt?”
“Not seriously. Some of those guards may be walking around for awhile with some nasty bruises but they’ll be fine. I have to say though, what you pulled off was pretty impressive despite the circumstances.”
She sighed, looking off in the direction of the masses. “I completely regret it. I wasn't thinking straight y’know? Just needed to get out of there. Now I doubt Tony will ever let me in the Tower again.”
That caught me off guard. “Your saying you would return??”
Luna leaned against the alcove, crossing her arms. “Well of course but I’ve kinda ruined my chances now.”
I chuckled softly at that. “Your crazy if you think Stark would kick you out of the tower. I mean yeah the guy has got issues, but he isn't cold-hearted. Besides everyone is sorta getting used to having you around. And with talents like yours maybe some day you could be an agent.”
She looked up at me with hope in her eyes “You really believe that?”
I stepped towards her, closing the gap between us. “Of course I do.”
Luna looked down for a moment and when she came back up I noticed a glimmering in her eyes. I wrapped her in a hug as she began to cry.
Through the quiet sobs, I heard her tearful words.
“Thank you Bucky. Without you I wouldn't have gotten my life back. Without you I would have ceased to be Luna. Thank you.”
MMMMMMM The end? Not so fast. there is a very cute epilogue heading your way!
