okay thats interesting! in the SF try-outs during the song "legally blonde" she sings about how she cant be legally blonde, while in the official version AND THE DEMO she sings about letting her be legally blonde. which means that at some point they changed the lyrics around, and then changed them back! laurence o'keefe.... nell benjamin.... what occurs in your twisted minds
#covers mouth sorry so sorry guys#im a huge fan of beacon of positivity + good boy (elle puts a leash on emmett confirmed) + love and war (not in the demo but part of SF)#+ i liked some of the lyrics in the demo version of so much better (it called back to beacon of positivity!!! (i am insane)) such as:#I dream of your name next to my own but mine's looking fine up there alone#but i greatly prefer all the official songs we got. well. maybe good boy over ireland wouldve been fun (i think ireland is boring)#but itd play into the 'all men are dogs hurr hurr' joke that im glad they avoided. anyways. what was i saying.#right i havent listened to every version of everything yet (for example theres a SF version of chip on my shoulder i need to watch)#(and just the SF vers in general. shes hidden from me... why was emmett there before the remix... let me see their conversation)#but from what i have heard they made a lot of changes that were sorely needed. in take it like a man demo shes so much meaner??#it made me sad. it wasnt a duet + they wrung out the romantic tension (no subtext by calvin klein... sigh) + shes meaner!!!!#in the bway vers hes baffled but enjoys going along w it + she genuinely likes him even when hes wearing his regular clothes#but in the demo vers she keeps calling him stuff like ugly duckling and talking about how the geek is gone :( but she likes that geek..#the lines 'how much do you think i earn??' and 'kindly shut up :)' are funny but speak to a dynamic between the two that makes me sad...#follow me for more beautiful opinions on a fifteen year old musical#(heaves. do you know weird it is to see comments from 15yrs ago when this was actually showing. my brother is fifteen.)#god im so sorry i should be put down like a dog#lgb bootleggers are intense. i swear they got a bootleg every night or smth bc we got her shoe flying off + SF + kyle as understudy etc#go watch a so much better compilation sometime how did they take so many bootlegs?? how did you find them??#and its awesome cause these were filmed on 2007/2008 tech which means they have 15 pixels maximum#SORRRRYYYYYYYYYY

AHHHH OKOK SO. the band was formed in 2001 in Newark, New Jersey, with members Gerard Way (vocals), Mikey Way(bass), Ray Toro (guitar), and Matt Pelissier on September 12, 2001, after Gerard (Gee) saw the twin towers fall. Soon enough they signed with eyeball records and released their first studio album, I Brought you my Bullets, You Brought me your Love, which is commonly shortened to Bullets. Mikey was the one who suggested the name after he saw a book at his workplace, Barnes and Nobles, titled Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance by Irvine Welsh. The record company wanted to add someone, so they added Frank Iero, from the just-split band Pencey Prep. So the band was made complete and album released, not many hits on this one (cubicles is my fav).
At the end of August in 2003, the band announced that they had signed with a major record label. After a tour with Avenged Sevenfold, they started to work on their second album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. the album can be understood as a "pseudo-conceptual horror story," in which a man and a woman who are separated by death in a gunfight and he goes to hell only to realize by the devil telling him that she's still alive. The devil says he can be with her again if he brings the devil the souls of a thousand evil men and the man agrees to do it, and so the devil hands him a gun. Its a 40 minute long album with 13 tracks on the standard version, and 14 on the Japanese version. The album released on June 8, 2004, and not even a month after they kicked Matt off the band and added Bob Bryar. No one is completely sure why Matt was kicked off but the main two theories were that he sucked at drums and that he lit their tour bus on fire. Soon after he was let go, the album went platinum. A bonus "album" was released after, Life on the Murder Scene, which was a collection on recordings, demos, and history. That same year they headlined for Warped Tour along with Fall Out Boy and opened for Green Day on the American Idiot Tour.
The Next Album released is The Black Parade. Theres a bit of a story to this one, in which "the patient" dies. After the album was released, the band would go as the pseudonym of "The Black Parade," and Gee would be the marching leader. For this tour, there would be over 130 concerts. Four singles were released prior to the album, and the album was named number 361 on the Rolling Stones greatest albums of all time. It has some mini-lore but not as much as danger days. 4 videos were filmed, one of which resulted in Gee and Bob getting injuries and being hospitalized. Around this time Mikey got married, leading to cancellation of some concerts and a temporary replacement. The album was received well and lead to the band becoming a pop punk staple of the two-thousands. Bob left soon after for unconfirmed reasons, but its speculated that Bryar and the rest of the band didn't get along too well (he was also racist).
In 2006, the Daily Mail published an article that called the band's music "satanic" and "a cult of self-harm". On May 16, 2008, the Daily Mail published an article titled “Why no child is safe from the sinister cult of emo." There was a girl who killed herself because of an "emo cult" she was in, and soon enough the tabloids used it against the band. They eventually retaliated by saying that their music is "anti-violence and anti-suicide" and aiming to provide comfort and solace to fans, and encouraged fans experiencing feelings of depression or suicide to seek help. British fans staged a protest, only for it to be "canceled" due to police concerns. for the rest of their gigs in the UK, the band would chant "fuck the daily mail." The daily mail continued to stand by saying that they were displaying the concern of the public, though the issue eventually settled.
Their fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, was released on November 22, 2010. The album had totally different sounds, more dainty and disco. It was more electronic based too. The lore of it was based off of the videos, which then got a spinoff comic series written by Gerard Way. The killjoys, a group of rebels in a post apocalyptic society, fight against an evil corporation called BL/ind (better living industries). They got a new drummer, who was soon let go because he was caught stealing.
This is just the condensed version and theres a lot more stuff, but the band split up on March 22nd, 2013, and released another album titled May Death Never Stop You, made up of their greatest hits and one new song which was considered a goodbye. The band announced their reunion tour in 2019 on Halloween, only for them to play one show before the rest were postponed due to COVID. On May 12th, 2022, the band suddenly released a new 6 minute long song, The Foundations of Decay. Fans went crazy and have proceeded to speculated that they will be dropping and album
Tumblr media
damn okay you know your stuff 💀 tbh i've only listened to and liked a couple of mcr's songs, one of them being the recent foundations of decay (probably my favorite) but i never really focused on the band at all. and i'd totally forgotten that he wrote the umbrella academy, but i applaud the effort and care gerard put into it, esp since he was still making music and touring.

have u seen serbian film? i did and i feel like fucked up my brain sm like i havent touched a movie that potentially may have the same vibe since, i used to purposefully try to watch more disturbing movies (thats how i got into von trier, who i like v much) but when it got to that it was over and now i get intrusive thoughts and im worried its gonna get stuck in like my brain development and ill always have them and have to keep like remembering the tips i learned from research about it
yeah I've seen it because I used to love watching shock value gore and shit in middle school, serbian film is classless artless its weak in every way except maybe visually, theres nothing positive gained from watching it
also forgot to mention another film called martyrs (2008 French version) its similar to Salo in how disturbing it is but its also one of my favorite movies, love the symbolism and imagery

I watched The Green Ray last nite and felt called out but I want more movies that explore loneliness that thoroughly. Do you have any recommendations?
AHHHHHH yesss the green ray is truly such a uniquely relatable movie like truly the character of delphine.. whew. perks of being written by a woman! i think i can come up with some recs but none are really exactly similar to the green ray but i feel they explore the same kinds of things. they also hit me personally but ymmv since something like this will inevitably be very subjective
middle of the night (1955)
an unmarried woman (1978)
the browning version (1951)
wild strawberries (1957)
taste of cherry (1997)
les rendez-vous d’anna (1978) -- i think akerman is really really good at portraying isolation/loneliness/depression and this might be her most accessible (and also watchable) film in that vein. also news from home (1976) maybe
like someone in love (2012)
vagabond (1985)
red desert (1964)
happy-go-lucky (2008) -- definitely more optimistic and light but i do feel theres a lot of overlap with this
vive l’amour (1994) -- tsai ming-liang would also be a good choice for this
when the tenth month comes (1984)
lilja 4-ever (2002)
a special day (1977)
millennium mambo (2001)
long day’s journey into night (2018)

THE WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON 1973 on The Schlocky Horror Picture show
OPENING: Hello, good evening, and welcome to the Schlocky Horror Picture Show. I'm your host, Nigel Honeybone.  What happens when the President of the United States of Amercia is a dumb ass hick who has a sub human sociopathatic murderous flesh eating creature writing his speeches? But Thankfully we don't have  George W Bush in power anymore. Tonight we turn to the Dog eat Dog world of politics and the occult to find out what happens when good journalism goes bad "WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON"……
BREAK: Nooo!!, The acting, the evil messages, the subliminal messages, the Darkness preparing to invade my soul…..And then after the add break, more of the WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON on the SCHLOCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.
MIDDLE: Welcome back to the Schlocky Horror Picture Show and frankly I'm surprised you came back. At all… Hi'ya .(WAVING)  What I was going to talk bout was the annoying plotless plot device of narrating half the movie before the movie even begins. Talk about Spoilers!, but I've changed my mind. Hey whats a skeleton to do.?  I Am going to talk about what I LIKE in his movie,  and that begins with the  Director, Writer, Producer and Editor Milton Moses Ginsberg who may have done his best work with Meatloaf's "To Hell and Back" but  here his clear homage to the 1941 Lon Chaney Jr classic THE WOLF MAN is obvious. Actually that's the ONLY thing I like in this movie.  It's perhaps the only film in which the word "pentagram" is repeatedly mistaken for "the Pentagon. There are a lot of laughs in this movie. Some of them might even be intentional. Hard to tell...it IS, after all, a cheap and poorly edited piece of work. But surprisingly, the acting is decent in parts. Of course then theres  Dean Stockwell as our Anti-hero Jack Whittier. Frankly I'm surprised he even got  to "Battlestar Gallactica",and "Quantam Leap" with this on his resume. I guess This must be his penance for "Dunwich Horror" in 1970. He should have learned from it and not even gone near "Dunwich Horror 2008". I suspect working with Stockwell is why  Katalin Kallay has never worked again. It's a pit. As Hungarian Translators go, she was a hottie.   Jane House who plays the Presidents sexy daughter so sublimely in this, is best know for her role Liz Talbot  in "As the World Turns"  while Biff Mcguire as the Smarmy Nixonesque President is delightfully ripe and moved onto "Search for Tomorrow".  Fortunately, the game cast come through with some very over the top performances. Clifton James as an oily, huffy attorney, Thayer David as a ramrod police inspector James Tolkan as a shady fed in sunglasses are a total blast to watch.   Michael Dunn is my favourite midget.  With  IQ of 178 and and a couple of Tony Award nominations here he is playing  the completely un-nessecary as far as I can tell,  Dr Kiss in an obvious reference to his more famous role...that of Dr. Loveless on TV's WILD WILD WEST. I'm told he was often frustrated by his lack of big roles although a photograph of Dunn in his role as Mr. Big appears during the opening credits of the 2008 version of Get Smart. But that would be be-littling him. There are some great scenes comeing uo so dont go to far because now we return to  1973 Classic, Werewolf of  Washingtion
CLOSING: So there you have it. The WORST time lapse job since visage did FADE TO GREY. Who could have possibly guessed everyone in the White House from the President on down are sleazebags.  I'm Shocked! If you look it's really not hard to see that it's a Watergate satire. Well he does live in the Watergate hotel. "Werewold of Washington" was released a few months before Nixon finally caved in & resigned the presidency. It was hastily written & produced as a timely comedy & probably a great surprise to everyone involved that the film is still around. I particularly lobeed the bit  when a well-fed Cracker-American tries to pin one of Stockwell's murders on witness who angrily says, "It was a werewolf, you racist pig!" It is funny that scene never made it into the annuals of Horror movie history. If this movie had to have a message I guess it would be " If someone tells you he's a bloodthirsty werewolf who should be locked up before he kills again, believe him.!" Actually, that's the timeless message of pretty much every werewolf movie, so until next we meet, Toodles!

Do you have any examples of film technology effecting storytelling?
Oh god this is a very complicated thing but I can give you snippets. I assume this is because of my jekyll and hyde mini dissertation post? In that I was discussing how its unfair to compare early jekyll and hyde films vs modern films in terms of quality. The earliest Jekyll and Hyde adaptations are in black and white, only a few minutes long and feature no sound whatsoever. Theres very little nuance, the characters aren’t explored in any detail and as film theory was still incredibly young there weren’t many visual cues an audience could read. Let me give you a visual example of a screenshot from one of the first film adaptations of Jekyll and Hyde (from 1912) vs a more modern version (2008).
Tumblr media
The early film version is fairly standard for its time - almost all shots are filmed flat and stationary from mid to wide. Film quality is low and characters are exaggerated for the purposes of clarity; which carries over into acting. Today we are able to use colour, angle and even a variety of filters to give the audience subtle clues as to how to read a character. We can chance the colour of a characters eyes. We have a huge variety of visual and audio effects that we can use in order to assist with our storytelling.  And on top of that we have 100 years worth of a visual marker library to use as shorthand. I’m sure some of you have joked about the “evil eyeliner” trope in male characters? We use the canted angle to give an appearance of something strange or sinister. We can put parts of the frame out of focus, linger on an item of importance for a few extra seconds - we can use a cliche flashback effect to tell an audience something they are watching now happened prior to the events they just witnessed.
This was vital in my study because I needed to be able to explain narrative even when it was not explicit in the script - but not condemn older media that doesn’t have the shortcuts to give that explanation on its own.

MISTERY, HORROR, POINT N CLICK AND RETRO
Here's a very thorough list I've been concocting over last week, thinking mainly on your taste and my gaming experience :P
AS far as Mistery/murder/detective stuff:
1)The ABC Murders (based on an A.Christie's novel with Hercule Poirot). Available on GOG. Its rather "easy" as a game.
2) The Last Express (one of the coolest point-n-clicks of the 90s that combines a unique art style with thrilling story of espionage aboard the Orient Express just before the break of the 1st World War). It will give you some "Titanic" vibes for sure, without the cheese, Available on GOG.
3) Tender Loving Care (one of the finest FMV point n clicks of the 90s, regarding the actual acting quality. To be pointed out; IT WILL include a "little more" nudity than Phantas. :P  It also brings a novel gameplay mechanic in which you take a "psichological test", and depending on the answers you give throughout the game, those will trigger the way the story unfolds). Available on GOG There is a much better "sequel"; POV (Point of View), which is almost impossible to find nowadays.
4) The Wolf Among US (The finest adventure that Tell-Tale developed over the last years, counting out their first season of "The Walking Dead"). Based on the comic series "FABLES" in which the old characters of the old fairy-tales are living in contemporary New York City, but in disguise, A very thrilling mistery story with apropriate "noire" vibes. It is available on GOG and there is a 2nd season coming soon...
And as for the HORROR (excluding some tiltles I know you're going to play eventually).
1) I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (based on an original short story by Harlan Ellison). It is 100 years since mankind has collapsed through a series of genocides and World Wars. There are only 5 human survivors, all prisoners and subjected to the whims and tortures of an all powerful AI/Super Computer. Very well written, perhaps, the BEST written horror/point n click game of the 90s. VERY CREEPY... Available on GOG.
2) Haunting Ground (A survaval/horror game for the PS2, which I think you can still "force" to play on PC with an emulator).
You are Fiona, a resourceful girl trapped in a castle/mansion full of characters that want to do horrible things to you. Very original gameplay mechanics include the blurring of the screen and the numbing of the controls, as the level of your fear increases to unbearable. A trusty dog you find in the castle can help you find your way out and solve puzzles, but you have to befriend him first.
As an alternative, I suggest SILENT HILL 2, for the PC, also from the survival/horror genre. This one is specially creepy and mature in themes, you are well warned...
3)The Last Door (you already played some of this lovecraftian epicodic mistery, but since theres a 2nd season available, perhaps you can continue the story...
4) HELLBLADE:Semua's Sacrifice (A well known and acclaimed recent indie horror adventure). You play a female celtic warrior that descends into hell to look for her fallen lover. This includes a great and well put together dosis of psichological horror. Available on GOG, Personally I think this would be a great choice for replacing KCD as your "banner" game on youtube, when the time comes.
5) The Dark Eye. Already suggested, this game of 1995 has a very unique art design, and very creepy vibes, based on short stories by Edgar A. Poe. It is a favourite of mine, but I have to admit this is more of an interactive short stories collection than a game. Not hard to find in Amazon or Ebay. (or your trusty torrent :P ). It WILL need the help of an emulator.
COOL POINT N CLICKS ARE
1) EDNA & HARVEY (Developed by Daedalic, the creators of the Deponia Series). This is a very original dark comedy romp in which you play as Edna, a lively young girl not-so-well-in-the-head that has been (wrongfully?) commited to an insane asylum. She must escape with the help of her wits and his trusty stuffed rabbit toy, Harvey. This is full of cheese and cool puzzles. I cannot recommend this one enough. This one also has a sequel ("Harvey's New Eyes") and both are available on GOG.
2) A VAMPYRE STORY. This not so well known comic adventure of 2008, developed by the illustrator of Curse of Monkey Island, is full of the old LucasArts humour and precious hand-drawn environments. All is woven into a story that pays homage to the old (1930s) horror films, but with more cheese than necessary to intoxicate your whole stream community. It's still available on amazon at very fair prizes (5-7 bucks), but you WILL need some tweeking in order to run it. Maybe by installing a "virtual XP" OS.
3) BOTANICULA (made by the same indie developers of "Machinarium") Both games are very different but share incredibly fine music and divine art style. Puzzles are logic and at times even really funny. Also both available on GOG.
THE SUPER RETRO (as some "just" retro games I already suggested above..)
This includes only games that surfaced during the 80s...
1) The Colonel Bequest (Sierra Mistery with female detective Laura Bow). Available on GOG. 1988.
2) Maniac Mansion (Antoher Lucas Arts classic). Available on GOG. 1987
3) Pirates! (Both the original and the remastered versions are available on GOG), A classic adventure from Sid Meier that combines arcade, strategy and a little roleplay. 1987
4) Defender of the Crown. Strategy game with some arcade elements that pays homage to the romantic old Hollywood "Robin Hood" movies. Extraordinary graphics and music for the times. Available on GOG. 1986
5) DRAGONSTOMPER. First acknowledged true RPG console-videogame EVER. A personal favourite of mine, maybe the third videogame I played as a child. :P By defeating monsters and creeters of the wild you have to gain gold and equipment in order to face the Evil Dragon that terrorizes the land.
It was originally developed for the Atari 2600, in 1982. Now you can simply download it for free. A good site to do it is "coolROM.com" where you can also find the suggested emulator (STELLA). After 30 years of not playing it, I recently tested it with no problems in Windows 7.
Sorry for the wall of text, I got carried away... :P
HAPPY GAMING, LILL! :)

In accolade of the humble fruit fly
Drosophila, the hard-working fruit fly widely used in genetics investigate, is a lot more like us than we might care to think. Time we got to know the little pest
In a series of areas in the Fly Facility of the Department of Genetics at Cambridge University, around 5m return wings are kept in test tube at any given point in time. Theyre stored at different temperatures to adjudicate running durations of life cycle at 25 C, its about 10 dates; at jug temperatures as long as five weeks.
Out in the wild, “they dont have” pest quite so likable to human needs as the humble pomace fly. It may have spent the summer feasting on the contents of your return container, but not until your assembled plums and peaches were starting to canker. But while gastronomic predisposition are typical to be applauded in a run, the drosophila, to present it its official title, has more going for it than good table manners.
For the past century, it has also acted the crucial serve of a science and medical search tool. Today, its often the first stop in research into a wide range of human illnesses, including Alzheimers disease, Huntingtons disease, spastic paraplegia, cancer and obesity. By compared to mice and dogs, let alone apes and humans, its massively inexpensive and easy-going working in cooperation with and there is little chance of sucking dissent from even the most radical anti-vivisectionist.
In many respects its position as a crucial search tool is a historical accident. Between 1910 and 1915, the pioneering American geneticist Thomas Hunt Morgan worked on Drosophila melanogaster in his renowned Fly Room at Columbia University and been demonstrated that genes provide the basis for chromosomal inheritance, for which he won a Nobel prize winner. It was a critical breakthrough, but there was no particular reason that it had to be made via the fruit fly. Yet ever since then, the tiny drosophila has been at the vanguard of genetic research. In the 1920 s, another American geneticist, Hermann J Muller, has showed that radioactivity leads to genetic mutation in fruit wings. The reason were careful about exposure to x-rays is no tiny portion due to Mullers work.
But some of the mutations that Muller grew, such as pilots with legs coming out of their premiers, subsequently played into the postwar period of atomic paranoia, acquainted George Langelaans short story The Fly, which was constructed into a film first in the 50 s and then remade by David Cronenberg in the 1980 s.

In the tale and the films, research scientists mutates into a wing, an idea thats shaking precise since we are experience ourselves as being so altogether differences between moves, with their strange the organizations and massive, honeycombed leaders and plainly creepy practices. This deep-seated nervousnes about runs has led to some famed misunderstands of biology. The most appalling speciman was in 2008, when Sarah Palin, extending for vice-president in the US presidential elections, told an audience that their money was going to is planned that have little or nothing to do with the public good. Concepts like fruit fly research in Paris, France. I kid you not.
Despite Palins clueless doubts, one of the reasons that operates have become important to much genetic and medical investigate in its relationship with humans is that they tolerate a impressive genetic similarity to us. The sci-fi fear of a flys otherness may well be based, somewhere direction down, on its unsettling closeness to us.
It was Michael Ashburner, the godfather of fruit fly research at Cambridge, who first established that of the genes that in their mutant anatomy campaign diseases in humen cystic fibrosis being one example around 75% have very similar equivalents in return hovers. When Ashburner started out in the 1970 s, runs were maintained in milk bottles in a temporary laboratory on the outskirts of Cambridge. As an expression of the results of his foundational act, which includes his classic book Won For All: How the Drosophila Genome Was Sequenced , Cambridge has become arguably the worlds passing centre of fruit fly research.
Its Fly Facility is run by one of Ashburners former PhD students, Simon Collier, who showed me around the labs and fly storage of the facility. Hes been working with fruit operates for 25 years and in that time hes come to know and realize many of their obscured to most human observers characteristics.
If you take a tube of runs and left open here you notice that they have practices, he alleges. The males courtroom the females. They follow the females and put one wing out and it vibrates. Theres a person in Leicester whos experimented this and what theyre doing is producing a kind of love song.
Apparently, the females are not looking for a long-term affair and, certainly, theyre likely in their short life span to have multiple spouses. The question with this for geneticists is that they store semen so paternity is a disputed issue. To counter the embarrassment of this brazen immorality, geneticists tend to work with innocent females.
How can they tell? I ask.
The look in their seeing, Collier says drily.
A colourised SEM micrograph, amplified 70 epoches. of the head of a fruit fly, evidencing compound seeing. Photograph: Tom Hartman/ Getty Images
He shows me a magnification of a onu of fruit operates that have been knocked out by carbon dioxide. Theyre still blinking but essentially stationary. He points out the differences between males( a bit smaller) and females and shows that young wings virgins if you like are pale and unpigmented.
He explains that for study determinations special chromosomes have been developed that enable geneticists to draw exactly what genes have been inherited. With mouse, for example, its necessary to check gene by gene whats been inherited, which moves genetic study much more time-consuming and costly.
Because the fruit flys life cycle is so short and they procreate so fast( sexually maturity is reached within eight epoches of incubating ), drosophila are ideal subjects for its further consideration of inherited traits, including genetic aberrations, over many generations.
Still, to the amateur, even one slightly more versed in the exigencies of scientific research than Sarah Palin, theres something intensely counterintuitive about doing genetic research on wings. For one thing, theyre so small. Doesnt that make it a whole lot trickier?
Collier shakes his head. Its fairly simple if you want to look at the fruit flys genome. You exactly place them in a tube and squish them up and do some simple DNA extraction. Whats more complex is becoming the other route implanting genetic substance into them.
He takes me to a special lab where this procedure is carried out. They take the tent-fly larvae and strip the eggs off their eggshells by putting them in bleach. Then with a long and highly fine needle, the relevant genetic material is introduced into the posterior of the eggs where the germline cells are located.
Drosophila melanogaster gaze quality variants, picturing grey and cherry-red. The grey seeing gene is sex-linked. Picture: Alamy
Given that an egg is about 0.5 mm in length( about the dimensions of the a particle of sand ), and the DNA administered into it is about the capacity of a millionth of a drop of ocean, you can see how delicate an operation it is. It takes about six months to master the instant motor skills necessary to do the job.
Usually half the embryos will survive that procedure, enunciates Collier. And we are in a position reproduction from them and examine them.
But study what exactly? And to what end?
Collier innovates me to two colleagues who are active in fruit fly research, a reader in genetics announced Cahir OKane and Damian Crowther, a director of neuroscience the investigations and change at the pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, who still holds links to the Fly Facility.
We go out to lunch and talk fruit operates. I expect Crowther first of all why “hed left” academic study to go into industry.
The story I tell, he alleges, is pals, and perhaps even adversaries, would ever insert me as, This is Damian, hes the tent-fly guy. In my occasion, Ive been a registrar in neurology and a research scientist in many areas I didnt conclude fly person certainly summarized me up.
OKane resembled the detail and both men agree that fly investigate has not made them either health professionals or social acknowledgment they speculate their work warrants.
What seems to matter most, to its implementation of professional appreciation at the least, is what is known as rendition, that is, passing the findings of fly research into productive contributions to medical applications for humen. There is little doubt that hovers study does contribute, in a wider appreciation of biological understanding of how all organisms piece, but also in specific examples of human illnes. However, its not easy to become direct links.
Its problematic, for obvious grounds, to lead from run tests to human experiments; there often needs to be a whole scope of happening stagecoaches in which other scientists take over and, unavoidably, take the spotlight and accreditation.
I cant tell you that theres a drug that Ive tested on return flies[ with an artificially created version of Alzheimers disease] thats benefited the fruit fly thats then gone on to benefit the human, articulates Crowther.
But, he excuses, Alzheimers commits the overproduction of proteins that species plaque in the brain that destroys neurons. So you can oblige frameworks of runs that raise these proteins, get their own plaque and succumb, he shows, and you are able to measure various ways of preventing the plaque formations.
Fruit wings dont naturally develop Alzheimers, although they have all the genetics of the Alzheimers pathway in their brain.
You have to give them human equivalent genes and push it really hard to get them to have Alzheimers in three weeks, shows Crowther.

Instead of thinking of pilot research as a direct route to medical breakthroughs, its better to see it, Crowther quarrels, as a style of doing quick and dirty research. He believes that because its so cheap, it should be used in a multiplicity of ways that might spot the direction to most productive routes of research. And whenever there is drugs that have already been measured on humans and have passed safety requirements but have failed in their efficacy with the targeted disorder, they could be retargeted by first testing them on flies.
The contemplating around really bad maladies like engine neurone malady, Huntingtons disease, is if you can get anything to work in a cell culture replicated in an animal, thats the beginning as long as its safe of promptly get it to patients, remarks Crowther.
OKane is especially suspicious of overblown claims for translation. For him, the allure of the fruit fly is that it is a organism that rewards analyse in a larger context.
Im interested in it because I think its a great arrangement for finding out how living things in general can work. I conceive by understanding the principles of how tent-flies labour you are able to make better prophecies for humans. The better you understand how “were working” the most rational you can be about trying to pattern rehabilitations; I imagine even without directing your work towards therapy, you are able to speculate more intelligently about cares five or 10 years down the line.
It has been said , not least by Collier, that more know anything about the biology of the drosophila than any other animal on Earth. For speciman, we know that fruit moves have a kind of built-in compass in their mentalities that allows a sense of direction. As all animals need to know how they move, its not unreasonable to assume that its a way of universal computation.
Another study to demonstrate that male fruit moves that are rejected by a female teammate are more inclined to drown their anguishes in food spiked with alcohol than male fruit tent-flies that have succeeded in copulated. Again, a mentality chemical that governs the wings stomach and is predictive of their thirst for alcohol has an equivalent that has been linked to alcohol uptake in humans.
In another consider, this time at Oxford, it was found that fruit operates are capable of what are liable to be worded intelligent deliberation. Rather than doing solely impulsive decisions, they take time to react when will come forward with a difficult choice.
In other terms, once again their behavior could be described as human-like. It seems that the common ingredient in both human and operate action is a gene announced FOXP, which is closely linked to cognitive developed as humen. Pilots with defective FOXP take longer to arrive at policy decisions, just as flaws in the human type of FOXP have been correlated with low-toned intelligence.
It is this long and valuable history of consider of the drosophila that should guarantee its continued involvement in genetic investigate. But much of what has been very successful about working with operates is now being be repeated in human stem cell research, which has the added advantage of being species-relevant. This was the other is why Crowther moved into the private sector: the competition from stem cells meant that he found it increasingly difficult to get fruit fly-based experiment funded.
The fly is yesterdays person, he mentions, yesterdays engineering. For me, stem cells are the next fruit fly.
OKane searches fairly glum at the prospect and argues that there have been queries over the future of pomace fly study ever since he started his laboratory 25 years ago. But he maintains that the work hes done in inherited spastic paraplegia would have taken 10 times longer to perform with mouse. OKane has grown to appreciate the rich biological and social development of fruit flies in the time hes been working with them.
The more you look at their behavior, he says, the more sophisticated you realise they are. Even in aggressivenes, how a male pomace fly behaves in a fight is dependent on his previous experience of fighting with other male and female what the other males previous know-how of fighting is. Its amazing to be considered all the machinery thats involved to be able to do that. Undoubtedly were more sophisticated, because were studying them, theyre not analyse us.
For the time being, until some over-ambitious genetics professor does manage to mutate into a run, thats the practice the relationship should be pursued. And both humans and return wings, it is about to change, can drink to that.

What the NBA Knows About China That Silicon Valley Doesn’t
In 2002, one of Chinas largest beer manufacturers came to Houston.
The Houston Rockets had recently drafted Yao Ming, the 7-foot-5-inch Chinese center, to play for the team. As the year’s first overall NBA draft pick, Rockets owner Les Alexander predicted that Yao would be bigger than Michael Jordan.
And Yanjing Beer was looking for a big crowd. So the Chinese company signed a multi-million, multi-year deal with the Rockets to become the first official international beer partner of an NBA team. It was simple: Yanjing would showcase its logo on signs around the court and arena.Viewers far beyond Houstonand the US itselfwould see those ads.
The Yanjing deal was just one of many to showcase the NBA’s unique global influence. Over the past three decades, the league has expanded its reach from Paris to Mexico City to Tokyo. But the NBA’s crowning achievement as an exporterone that puts it in the same prestigious echelon as Apple and Disneyis its success in the most populous country in the world: China.
Now, as China hustles down the path toward becoming the world’s largest moviemarket, among other consumer superlatives, US media companies are looking to gain traction. And they can look to the NBA as a positive precedent.
But China is a complicated place that has stymied the likes of Google, Facebook, and Netflix. The NBA has worked since the 1980s to build a fanatic fanbase in China. And it started with a strategy that some of the world’s biggest, most successful tech companies have come to embrace in the decades since: it gave away its product for free.
Tumblr media

Stern in China
When David Stern became the commissioner of the NBA in 1984, he started looking overseas. Heset up NBA offices in Paris and Tokyo. Then he set his eyes on China. Like many major American franchises, they felt they had saturated the American market, says David Lawrence Andrews, a professor at the University of Maryland who has written about the globalization of sports. But they did it earlier and more effectively than any other league.
The NBA was not the first group to introduce basketball in China. Missionaries affiliated with the YMCA brought the sport there way back in 1895. Over the next century, basketball grew to become one of the country’s most popular sports to watch or play. It also became a kind of pawn in Sino-American diplomacy. In the 1970s, US basketball players went to China to play and train Chinese teams.
So when Stern went to China in 1987, the market was already seeded. In Beijing,he met with government-run China Central Television, the country’s dominant television network and agreed to give away recorded telecasts ofNBA games for free. Two years later, the NBA licensed live games to CCTV.
The NBA was one of the first American media companies that was able to start broadcasting on Chinese television, says Aynne Kokas, a professor at the University of Virginia, who studies media in China. Broadcasting live at the time, she says, was unprecedented.
Tumblr media

By the early aughts, as more TV stations went on the air in China, the NBA hatched deals with them, as well19 others in all. The league adapted again as the Internet became popular in China, creating a Chinese-language NBA website that featured live game statistics in Simplified Chinese. In 2010, the NBA made a deal with Chinese media company Sina to stream games online.
During this time, the league also began expanding its marketing strategy tocapitalize on Chinese stars. In 1999, the Dallas Mavericks drafted Wang Zhizhi. Then in 2002, Yao arrived. “It was a consumer phenomenon,” says Jeffrey Towson, a professor at Peking University who specializes in investments in Asia. Chinese fans loved himso much so that at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, Yao carried the Chinese flag during the opening ceremony. He literally becamethe flag bearer of Chinese sports,” Towson says.

How the 3-Pointer Is Changing The NBA
Yao retired in 2011, but the NBA has continued to iterate. It marketed Asian-American point guard Jeremy Lin to Chinese audiences as the next big superstar. It locked in dealswith Chinese broadcasters. It created an official NBA Weibo account (China’s version of Twitter), which now has 31million followers. The NFL’s Weibo account, by comparison has 440,000. This summer, the league plans to open a basketball theme park called Playzone in Shanghai.
Perhaps most importantly, the league didn’t waste time connecting with Chinese fans where they were spending more and more of their time: on smartphones. Specifically, it cut a deal with Tencentwhich, as Townson puts it, “is on every phone in China”to stream NBA games.
Only One NBA
Even Stern may not have initially realized how fruitful his efforts in China would turn out to be. Today the country is not only the most populatedin the world but also a rapidly growing economy with more than a billion entertainment-hungry consumers. So how did the NBA have the foresight to develop a strategy that has allowed it to succeed where so far Google, Facebook, and Netflix have all come up against roadblocks?
For one, the Chinese already loved basketball. Three hundred million people play basketball in China, according to the Chinese Basketball Association. The NBA has fed this potential fanbase locally as well by bringing preseason games, known as the NBA Global Games, to the country nearly every year since 2004.
If you love basketball, theres really only one league,” Towson says. You cant clone the NBA.”
While China has had its own national basketball league, the NBA is still the unparalleled powerhouse, both in athletics and marketing. Professional sports in China are also regulated by the government, which makes them less commercialized and professionalized, saysHanhan Xue, a sports management researcheratFlorida State University.
Tumblr media

The NBA by contrast built up an enormous fan base in the country by capitalizing on its stars. Yaowas a crucial part of this strategy, but the NBA has also sent other players to China to promote the sport. Kobe Bryant went to Hong Kong and Beijing way back in 2001, wherehe was interviewed on CCTV. LeBron James visited Beijing and Hong Kong in 2005 as an ambassador for Nike. And, for years, NBA players have participated in photo-ops at the Great Wall of China.
The league has also capitalized on the Chinese governments push for a greater sports culture in the years leading up to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The NBA has helped build basketball arenas in major cities and promoted basketball clinics and school programs. By helping foster basketball as a sport for kids in China, the NBA iscontinuing to reinforce the fanbase for professional sports.
Mass Market
For American media companies looking to gain clout in the country, the NBA serves as a kind of blueprint. That’s especially important todayas there’s an enormous demand for media in China. And yet it wont be as easy for companies like, say, Netflix, Facebook, or even NBCUniversal, to make a significant mark in China as the NBA has done.
For one, most media companies dont have something no one else has that is also best served up live.Pirated films and TV shows are popular in China; why would users pay for something like Netflix or Hulu? But no one wants to watch the NBA Finals six monthsor even a few daysafter they happen.
Tumblr media

Meanwhile, US tech companies already face tremendous competition from giants like Tencent and Alibabathat is, if the government allows them into the Chinese market at all. More recently, Chinese authorities have also starting cracking down more heavily on foreign media. So far, that protectionism has not extended to basketball.
Even if, say, Netflix started streaming in China, it would still face the challenge of adapting its content to meet the strictures of government censors. Live basketball doesn’t really have that problem. Games are family-friendly fun in a way that Jessica Jones and House of Cards just aren’t. The NBA doesnt have to make promises that they wont go over any lines,” Kokas says. “The game of basketball is such that unless something crazy happens its fine.
Ultimately, basketball was already something that people in China knew and liked—the NBA just offered them the best version of the sport, with the stars, merch, and tech to boot. The NBA has something Chinese consumers want, and it figured out how to work within the system. It’s a template other US companies would do well to emulate. Just one problem: none of those other companies have 7-foot giants pounding the boardsoh, or Steph Curry 3-pointers.

19 Reasons Your Obsession With Dev Patel Is Justified
We need to talk about Dev Patel.
The 26-year-old British Indian actor could walk away with the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his rolein Lion.In the film, Dev plays Saroo Brierley, a man desperately searching for his family in India after being separated from them at the age of 5.
Its a great, fiery performance that deserves recognition in and of itself, but theres another reason were rooting for him. Just read this tweet:
That is a huge deal.On-screen representation matters, and its especially important for Asian actors. According to a 2016 diversity study,Asian actors nabbed only 3.9 percent of speaking roles in film a stark contrast from the 73.7 percent white actors receive.
Thats not the only reason werepulling for Dev to win an Oscar, though. Below, a few reasons why were obsessed with the Oscar-nominated actor:
Before receiving all this Oscar buzz for Lion, Dev was in 2008s massive hit Slumdog Millionaire and was equally amazing in that. Remember when he danced like this and low-key stole your heart?
He was also great on HBOs The Newsroom, playing a blogger and the offices resident computer geek.
He was super cute back then, of course.

But right around the time of The Newsroom, something began to change. Our nerdy-cute pretend boyfriend started to grow into his looks in a major way. Its like one day the hair gods smiled down at Dev and said, Hey, Slumdog guy, its time to grow out that hair and drive everyone crazy with lust for your locks.
Jason LaVeris via Getty Images
And grow it out he did. The swooshy-hair era began and nothing has been the same since. Dev has pretty much blossomed into full babe mode now.
Then and now: Dev Patel shot by BAFTA in 2009 and 2017 . (L) @ellisparrinder (R) @gregwilliamsphotography . #DevPatel #tbt #throwbackthursday #BAFTAs

Woah, right?
Those curls.
Barcroft Media via Getty Images
Seriously, THOSE CURLS.
And dat smile.
Vera Anderson via Getty Images
He also has a beautiful, classical profile. And the beard is good, too. (Lets give credit where credit is due, guys.)
Hes so good at posing for photo shoots, his side hustle should be modeling. (But please dont stop acting, Dev.)
Then theres his accent. Dev pulls off a pretty convincing Aussie accent in Lion, but his real-life British lilt will melt your heart.
Sigh. Please never stop touching your hair.
All awards season long, Dev has been a big booster of Sunny Pawar, the adorable 8-year-old who plays the younger version of his character in Lion.
Like, he literally boosts him up:
George Pimentel via Getty Images
Sunny very impressively carries the first half of Lion all by himself and Dev gives him credit for that every chance he gets.
Hes so incredible in this film, and I share this nomination with him in a big way, Dev told the Los Angeles Times recently.

Gotta love a man who respects his mama.
We also want him to win because were positive hed be so humble and bashful during his acceptance speech. Just look at how he reacted to his name being called for his SAG award nomination.
And in spite of all the Oscar buzz surrounding him, Dev realizes were living in politically tumultuous times and theres weightier things happening in the world right now. Heres whathe told the LA Timeson the SAG Awards red carpet:
At times like this, youre constantly questioning what youre doing at awards like this or promoting a movie. It feels so pointless. I look to the people around me and they remind me the message of this film, of the art were trying to inject into the world right now. Its about unification, he added. When I think about that, it makes me have a little bit more strength.
Oh, and another thing: Hes an animal lover. (Dev + doggo = happy us. And loud squee-ing noises,to be honest.)
On another shallow note, boy fills out a suit quite well.

Were in good company in our Dev devotion. Ellen DeGeneres gave himthe title ofSexiest Man Alivewhen he visited the show back in January. So well deserved, even if Dev was like, Aw, shucks, me?
And his Lion co-star Nicole Kidmanrecognizes his swag as well.
