I've been talking with a few people who read ajw's books and I feel like this community is so all over the place and that it would be a sick idea to make a discord server so everyone can ramble and share their arts and other stuff...

Intro Post

Hi! My name is Ames (pronounced Ae-mm-zz). I am pretty new to Tumblr so please excuse my computer illiteracy.

I love musical theatre and my favorite musicals are Be More Chill, Ride the Cyclone, The Art of Pleasing Princes, Adamandi, and Newsies.

Other than musical theatre, I also do swim, chorus, and some creative writing. My favorite book is Song of Achilles and my favorite graphic novel is Blackwater

I also like The Magnus Archives + The Magnus Protocols.

My favorite holiday is Valentine’s Day and my favorite place on Earth is Richmond.

Characters I relate to would be Jason (TAOPP), basically every TMA character who’s name starts with an “M” (TMA), Gerry (also TMA), Thomas (En Abime), Daphne (TSBIT), and Chidi (The Good Place).

(I am very much so straight so just know that if I ever joke about liking/dating a guy I’m only joking)

just finished reading the spirit bares its teeth, by the same author as hell followed with us, and i’m not exactly sure what to say. just. dear lord, what a book. absolutely not one for the squeamish, faint-hearted, or anyone with any triggers at all. when i say this is a gory, messy, horror novel centered around medical trauma and the horrible things inflicted on queer, neurodivergent, or otherwise undesirable people, i fucking mean it. i read hfwu and thought to myself, this ya novel is more explicit than some adult that i’ve read; i read tsbit and thought to myself, oh, that was nothing compared to this. granted, that was body horror and this is medical horror, but the two are almost one in the same. (it’s arguably worse since the gore is realistic rather than lab-engineered doomsday cult zombie virus mutation.)

of course, i loved it. i loved all the descriptions of dissections and diy surgery and morbid intrusive thoughts. i love that all the girls are flawed, in such a believable way. they have no loyalty to each other because they’re all just trying to survive. yet there’s still some unspoken rules of human decency, the occasional measure of silent sympathy.

i will say that the romance subplot is a little weak: the love interest, as an outsider, had very little opportunity to shine, and in contrast to all the girls we see on the daily, doesn’t have many discernible flaws. the main character falls for them immediately, and they’re beautiful and perfect and etc etc. (at least protag is self-aware that their infatuation is helped in no small part by the fact that he thinks of them as safe, in a situation where he has very few, if any, allies.) their existence is also extremely convenient—which is not necessarily a criticism, as with every story, characters exist because the plot demands it—but it does come off a little contrived.

i think it managed to include all the horrible, horrible topics you might expect from a sanitarium-style setting (physical and sexual abuse, medical torture and mutilation, grooming, forced marriage/pregnancy, etc) in a way that wasn’t overly edgy or gratuitous. they were implied from the start and later explicitly stated, but not depicted in a voyeuristic way, if that makes sense. (and of course, the comeuppance is violent and bloody and cathartic.)

in summary, i enjoyed it more than the author’s previous book, which i already liked a lot! would recommend with a hard caveat that you need to read the trigger warnings dear god please mind the warnings it is a little brutal. for a ya novel.

hello tumblr i have just finished reading The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White and i need to scream my thoughts about it into the void

spoiler warning for the entirety of this book, i want to tell you to read it blind but i should ALSO tell you to read the content warnings because yeah, this book is dark and it pulls no punches in depicting horrible shit (this is not a criticism. i love it, but not everyone will and i understand that)

OK RIGHT OFF THE BAT i love Silas as a character so much, as an autistic person i think this is the most seen/understood i have ever felt reading about another autistic person in fiction.

i love you Daphne I was so ready to hate her when she was introduced and then the second she came out to Silas she stole my heart, i'm not trans but that scene almost made me cry.

i would kill for the groundskeeper i hope he knows that, never said a word but he might be one of my favorite characters in the book. wherever he is i hope he's doing well.

i desperately want to know more about the Braxton's girls. what were their lives like before the book, did they have families, did they miss them, did they try to fight back against the horrors they faced there only to become numb to them. what about the girls who managed to leave, what happened to them, what is happening to them.

i love Mary and Frances, but i'm never going to recover from the emotional damage they did to me. i KNEW there was something between them when Mary was introduced but then the scene in the basement happened and i sobbed uncontrollably. i will NEVER get over Frances haunting Mary's ring and Mary calling Frances her wife in the epilogue.

what the HELL happened to Charlotte. we know she's in Braxton's for being a feminist, what kind of hell did they put her through for her to become the way she is in the book?

Harriet Johnston. holy fucking shit, Harriet Johnston. everything about her scene fucking broke me. i can't even ask what she did to deserve that because nothing she could have done would warrant that.

the bathroom scene. anyone who has read the book knows what i'm talking about. Isabella i am so sorry. the fact that Silas was able to save her, that she WOULD HAVE SURVIVED had Headmaster not caught her. the tragedy that she died so close to the climax, that she was so close to surviving and escaping but that the climax also would have never happened if she did survive. she was dead no matter what, and she deserved so much better.

Mrs Forrester is such an interesting character to me. she's just as much a victim of the system as she is a perpetrator of it, and in a weird way i love the fact that she isn't redeemed by the end. also how poetic and tragic is it that the first student of Braxton's dies with it?

George sucks, he can fuck off and die for all i care. over and over he was given the choice to do the right thing and every time decided not to because it would have made HIS life harder. Elsie deserves a better husband, Silas deserves a better brother. he's not even the worst character morally, but i can't even say that i hate his guts because he has no guts for me to hate at all.

i am fully prepared to ramble more about this book when i can form coherent thoughts, i am trying but my brain is still spinning at light speeds and the words are not coming out right. i am so normal about this book
