yeah well I think you guys use fanfic as a stand in for shallow low stakes writing and immature/inexperienced writers because it's an easy short hand to make fun of people, even though it ultimately hurts the point you're making.

blindly using the idea of Tropes as a stand in for not being able to write dark or interesting or complex characters and stories is just so baseline ridiculous. not every fanfic trope is a coffee shop au and not every published novel is from stephen king.

the entire point of fanfic "tropes" is to make it Easier to find the kind of story you're looking for, if you can't find dark or high stakes fanfic that is literally a skill issue

13. Is there a trope you wouldn’t write if it was the last trope on earth?

15. A Hollywood producer tells you that they want to film just one of your fics. Which fic would you want it to be?

13: So originally I was going to say ‘ABO’ but I’m not sure that’s a trope. And then I got reminded of one that puts me in a frothing rage every single TIME. Ahem.

I really hate the trope where a strawman ‘pacifist’ is put in just so they can be converted to violence later in the story. And it’s so common. It really bothers me, partly because I am a pacifist. And I don’t think it’s a position you arrive at without thinking about things a lot. The world, our global society, is so structured to support violence that an absolute rejection of it is radical. And I don’t think anyone gets there without thinking a lot about what violence is, what it does, what the alternatives are and mean.

So I’m never adding to that noise. Pacifists when I write them are going to be committed to their ideals and behave like pacifists. Whether that’s dismantling landmines or feeding the hungry or just standing in front of an occupying force and saying ‘Shoot me’.

Violence in fiction can be fun. And stories that use violence don’t have to take it seriously. But if they’re trying to take it seriously, if they’re bringing in arguments against violence… then I think you kinda need to actually show those arguments and demonstrate those beliefs in practice.

That’s just me.

And my endless frothing weasel rage.

15: This is a toss up between And do Abominable Things With Grace (Hannibal/Pacific Rim crossover that’s mostly about unethical medical experiments) and Three Forms of Love (Elsa/Mulan Once Upon a Time that’s about love and duty and cultural differences).

I think out of the fic I’m proud of and I’d like to see transformed they’d have the most interesting imagery in live action. Larceny, Jailbreak and Running Red Lights would, obvs be better as an animated piece. And some of the pieces I love most (Another Man’s Freedom Fighter) just would not work as live action without changing them hugely. They’re too introspective.

Abominable Things as a live action would be incredibly trippy. And gory. And unlike anything I’ve seen in live action. Because it’s an action movie from the perspective of imprisoned test subjects. And because of the way I used the Drift would lead to some interesting pov confusion.

Three Forms of Love as a live action would work almost like an Arthurian romance. A lot of intricate costumes and sweeping shots. A lot of visual detail. Hell just seeing the ice creep over Mulan’s armour, a little at a time, as she falls for a Queen and doesn’t want to admit it to herself. The conversation they have about freyja vs skaldmaer vs idisi, all those quiet longing moments in the dark.

Maybe I’ve been listening to too much Gawain and the Green Knight but having written it out I’m going with Three Forms of Love. It would look beautiful.

“The Scout.”

1.) Muse A is from a well secured township and is sent to scout as to why its sister location has gone radio silent. They run into Muse B on the way. Do they work together and travel to the sister location or is Muse B the reason the sister location is down?

1.2) If Muse B is the cause of the fall of the sister location, why? What were the reasons? What happened behind closed doors of that township?

“Supplies.”

2.) Muse A is on a supply run and runs into Muse B. Do they decide to band together for survival or do they fight for the supplies Muse A has found? 2.1.) Muse A is on a supply run and runs into Muse B. Muse B is wounded and Muse A manages to rescue and heal Muse B. Do they stick together afterwards or does Muse B skip town?

2.2) Muse B tells Muse A of their plans to go to a place that is claimed to be some sort of sanctuary by someone on the radio they’ve found. Muse A decides to accompany Muse B. Is it truly sanctuary or is there something rotten afoot?

“Provisions.”

3.) Muse B is caught by Muse A for hoarding rations and keeping more than their fair share. In a desperate attempt to keep Muse A from outing them and potentially being ejected from the group, Muse B confides in them that they’re pregnant and unsure of how they’re going to be able to survive with a child and so have kept extras for future use.

3.1) Muse A decides to kick it up a notch and has quickly placed themselves at Muse A’s side and vows to fulfill whatever roles Muse B needs, spouse, parent, provider, etc.

“Just a peek.” Life Could Be A Dream // The Crew-Cuts

1.) Muse B gets a furtive glance of the future. They see a fulfilling, wonderful life with Muse A -- kids, house, stability, true love, real happiness. Do they want it? Is this something they’ve dreamt of? Is it something they want with Muse A? Or is it something they never considered before? Something they never wanted at all? Do they pursue it or do they fight it? 

1.2) Muse B and Muse A do not get along or are enemies. What changes in Muse B’s behaviour after seeing the vision or do they maintain their stance?

1.3) Muse B got the vision wrong -- and it is not their future with Muse A but instead Muse C’s. Do they attempt to take it for themselves or let it go?

1.) The muses have to live with each other for some reason or another despite not liking each other. They’ve got to make it work. The apartment is cramped with only one bathroom. It’s up to them to make it into a cozy home. The muses must decorate and furnish their new apartment. To the shopping centers they go! 1.2) Muse A has been standoffish, cold towards Muse B for whatever reasons until they see Muse B do mundane, domestic, pedestrian things and finds themselves quickly falling for them. 1.3) Muse B has been nursing a crush on Muse A but due to Muse A’s standoffish nature towards them, they never let their feelings be known.

When no good deed goes unpunished, Dean ends up sentenced to community service for physically defending another Omega at his job. That is, at his former job. It's all a steaming pile of shit, and that's exactly what he has to clean up at the joint animal shelter and clinic he's been assigned to.

With a face full of allergies and a horrific mood, all Dean has to do is get through six weeks of this sinus-assaulting torture. That's not so easy with a smartass Alpha receptionist, but at least the weird Beta vet might just end up being kinda cool.

Very charming and eventually very hot ABO romance featuring Dean being terrible at emotions despite having so many of them and Cas being weird and awkward and lovely, plus all the fun of the miscommunication trope with none of the things I usually hate about it. (warnings for past and in-story sexual harrassment/assault, but no non-con)

Musings ahead, mostly about the rise of abo stuff in fandom and attribution and folklore

Thinking about the om*g*verse lawsuit and how a lot of accounts pinpoint the birth of a/b/o to Supernatural and the SuperWhoLock and Teen Wolf fandoms and in one sense this is right because that’s probably when this specific incarnation took hold

But like Beauty and the Beast can be traced to one author while still owing much to the traditions of The Animal Bridegroom and Eros and Psyche, so too can a/b/o trace its roots much farther back My first experience with fandom as a digital thing (and as a community other then “my friends also like this thing”) was Digimon, but probably my most formative was what came next: Dragonball Z. And at the time it was definitely accepted fanon that Saiyans marked their “mates” with a “mating bite” and fics often had Saiyan characters going into heat and so on. Like it was weird to find a Vegeta/Bulma fic that didn’t have this. And that's just the fandom side and I am certain these tropes were a thing long before 10-year old Ally discovered fan forums. It doesn’t even touch the tradition of the “Alpha Male” in the romance novel or werewolf romance/erotica or like...so much In 300 years will this have its own tale-type classification?

FanFic ask game: B, I, M, S, T, U, and X!

Thank you so much!  These were all super cool to think about!!!  

B.  Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?Quite a few!  A lot of my really sappy, domestic KaiShin stuff is based on my own life with a roommate I’m super close to.  We aren’t romantic, but I think a strong romance should be built on a solid foundation of friendship and family feelings.  You should like spending time quietly with the one you love, so a lot of those quiet little things I pull from my own life.  ^^  I couldn’t give you a direct example off hand, but that domestic vibe comes straight from my own life, wholesale.  (Bits of dialogue and characterization often do as well, but that’s a lot harder to pin down than a mood, I think.)

I.  Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?Kind of?  For writing, I take a possibly perverse pleasure in killing off characters I hate.  When I was first getting into writing I actually had an OC for that exact purpose.  I would give him traits I hated, and then kill him off.  It was very therapeutic.  I mostly keep that sort of thing to myself nowadays, but the pleasure is still there.  The character is usually harder to come by now, though.  Most characters I could take or leave.  There are very few that I could be said to really hate.And for reading, I read a lot of really filthy smut, actually.  I won’t tell you which kinks or anything, but a lot of them are... really weird.  Otherwise, I don’t actually feel much guilt about what I read or write (or generally enjoy), so I don’t really have a hard and fast guilty pleasure.

M.  Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?I’ve been thinking of this one KaiShin fic for AGES, actually.  Basically, Kaito is a celebrity, maybe as an actor, maybe as a magician, and he ends up hiring Shinichi as his agent.  (Shinichi is a GREAT agent, he’s just a little on the stiff side.)  Kaito falls for him, but Shinichi is a professional, so he keeps his feelings out of his work.  He also thinks Kaito is just a flirt, so his teasing doesn’t mean anything.  It would be from Kaito’s POV, I think, and take place over the course of a movie’s PR cycle or something.

S.  Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?Arranged marriage (especially political or fantasy based) and werewolves/good ABO.  I will drop everything to read those.  Especially combinations, like someone is arranged to marry into a wolf pack for a treaty.  

T.  Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?I hate when people make 20-somethings out to be “parents,” especially of teenagers.  I am not a parent, I’m an older sister.  MAYBE a young aunt of a small child.  If they actually ARE parents, and it’s kid fic, that’s one thing, but like the Team Parents trend needs to die.  (@ VLD, @ YoI)  Obviously people will like what they like, so it really only bothers me if that’s like.  The ONLY thing in the fandom.  Otherwise I’ll read about anything, as long as it’s a ship I like.  (I’m also kind of leery of the insistence on multi-shipping nowadays, but maybe that’s just me being stubborn.  I’m still an OTP kinda girl.  One true pairing per fandom (that I ship exclusively), and the others can pair up with whoever.)

U.  Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.@lunarscaped (lunadarkside) as always ;D  I’ve always been super envious of her descriptions and her emotional language.  I want to get that kind of emotional intensity into my own writing.  ^^@atomicblonde (lalazee) is a writer I’ve admired for... God, something like eight years?!  She wrote (writes?) super great Star Trek fic--some of the best Kirk/Spock I’ve read, actually--and lately, she’s started writing AMAZING BakuDeku.  (God Bless @mgcmind is, of course, one of my faves (in general, but especially for Lawlight)~  Everything she’s written has been great, especially Seeking His Hand, obviously.  No other fic in recent years has had me gasping like some kind of Victorian maiden, clutching my pearls.  It is a downright incredible slowburn.  I await each update with baited breath~  Oh, and Kratos_Aurion (on AO3) writes this REALLY great ABO Lawlight fic (Into the Grey) that I’ve been keeping up with.  The mystery elements and the suspense of the main plot, coupled with the slowburn romance make for a GREAT read.  It does a great job balancing the complications of a world with ABO dynamics with the personalities of the major players.  It updates fairly regularly and I highly recommend it.  ;D

X.  A character you enjoy making suffer.0tabek A/tin.  I hate him.  I know that’s an unpopular opinion, but I honestly can’t stand what he’s become.  It makes me hella petty, but that’s something I’m willing to accept about myself.  So, I tend to take out my aggression on him.  As far as the “characters I love that I also want to suffer” I can’t really say I have any.  I like making characters I like happy.  The struggles are generally incidental to the larger plot, not the purpose of the plot, you feel me?

Alpha, Beta, and Omega, particularly in the context of wolves, are early scientific descriptions of social status or rank. The idea is that the Alphas are the most dominant, powerful individuals; that the Betas are their subordinates, like lieutenants; and the “Omega” is the lowest-ranking wolf, the pack punching bag, who is submissive to everyone else and whose job is to take their abuse, and also to cajole the pack into play.

The paranormal romance genre has developed its own little sub-tropes around the framework of Alphas, Betas, and Omegas in werewolf packs, so they’re not always drawing directly on these terms as they’ve been applied to wolf packs, but it’s definitely still one of the most common versions you’ll see of werewolf society depicted in fiction. 

There is also a popular trope that’s specific to fanfiction, which is also called “Alpha/Beta/Omega” or “A/B/O” dynamics, and though it shares many of the same roots as far as Alpha dominance and Omega submission, it’s not the same trope at all. A/B/O stories treat the idea of Alpha, Beta, and Omega more like sexual orientation and a description of physical sex characteristics. Some of the same problems exist in both tropes — and it gets particularly confusing when authors write A/B/O dynamics into a werewolf character setting where Alpha/Beta/Omega are also used as werewolf social ranking.

The fact that these terms are so popular, and used in so many different ways, adds an extra layer of confusion to their use, because werewolf fans will have already come across so many different ideas and iterations of what exactly “Alpha,” “Beta,” and “Omega” mean in so many different fictional universes, versus what they mean in real life, compounded with the fact that, well… the basis of the whole concept is rubbish.

Why Alpha / Beta / Omega for Werewolves Simply doesn’t Make Sense

The concept of Alpha / Beta / Omega wolves comes from flawed, outdated science. We know now that wolf packs in the wild are typically just a family unit: the “alphas” are in fact just the parents, or the breeding pair, and most of the other wolves in the pack are their offspring from the past several years. (There are many other pack configurations, including extremely large packs that might include aunts, uncles, wolves welcomed from other packs, and more, but a wolf pack on the most basic level is simply a family.)

How would your werewolves have started using these terms in the first place? They weren’t commonly associated with wolves until the 1950s. Even if your werewolves wanted to apply human scientific terms to their own society, if that society pre-dates the 1950s, it wouldn’t make sense for them to use those terms for themselves at all.

-  If in your universe werewolf society goes back to much more ancient times, or are simply not coming straight out of human society with human views, they would already have their own fully developed culture, social practices, and language to describe themselves.

-  The most important thing I’d love for people to understand about our ideas of power, dominance, and rank in the social life of animals, is that these are almost always just humans projecting our own nonsense onto animals.

When Alpha / Beta / Omega Might Make Sense for Your Werewolf Characters

-  When your werewolves were created by, are being studied by, or are under the control of military, government, or science forces.

-  When your werewolves weren’t born as werewolves, but acquired the condition from a bite, and have no idea what they’re doing.

-  When your werewolves don’t use the terms for themselves, but humans have applied it to them.

There are undoubtedly other occasions when those terms might make sense, and hopefully you can give it some careful consideration to how the history of these terms might interact with the werewolf society you’ve built, if indeed your werewolves have any organized society at all.

I haven’t written this post with the intention of shaming authors who use this convention, but with the hope of encouraging authors to branch out a bit more in the way they write werewolves, and hopefully provide you with a bit more background on where these terms come from and their possible pitfalls for worldbuilding.

RANT ALERT

I clipped a lot of the article, to just focus on the main bits. I thought it had some interesting points, but I also thought this article was an incredibly presumptuous way of telling werewolf writers and worldbuilders how to build their own make-believe universe. 

Okay, we get it, Alpha/Beta/Omega ranks were based on flawed research from the 1940s-50s, and as opposed to unrelated wolves in captivity, wolves in the wild don’t actually act that way at all. Nice. Fascinating. But werewolf fiction/horror is HARDLY one to be a stickler for factual scientific accuracy or realism in the first place.

It’s one thing to want a realistic plot and feasible character/storyline development in werewolf fiction (hello, Teen Wolf is a glaringly painful example; you’re justified to freak out trying to follow the plot holes and inconsistency and baiting). It’s another thing to single out a trope you don’t like and say in your “non-shaming” article that:

“....as much as I obviously hate this entire trope and wish it would die (sorry, I’m trying not to be judgmental, but I’m failing).”

If you don’t like ABO, or any other trope, and it bothers you that much that it’s scientifically and biologically inaccurate, there’s a very simple solution: DON’T READ OR WATCH IT.

Does it REALLY matter that werewolf stories often rely on the ABO trope in order to build their fictional stories? Yes, it often perpetuates a stereotype about human-derived hierarchies and behavioral norms, but the article is missing the point: These are WERE-WOLVES. Not REAL WOLVES. They’re ALREADY HALF HUMAN. So of course they’re going to invoke some form of human interaction and societal structures!

Then the article brought up the bitten versus born wolves. Even BORN wolves are still descended from human ancestors. “Werewolf” literally means (Hu)Man-Wolf -- the same way werefox means man-fox and werejaguar means man-jaguar. It’s rare to find a werewolf historiography in literature or film that does not begin with a HUMAN either:

being bitten by a wolf from the offset (ie: magical/scientific rabies)

using magic/potions/charms to become a wolf (eg: shamanism, animism)

being cursed into becoming a wolf, often via cannibalism (eg: Lycaon)

becoming a wolf via death-rebirth spiritualism (eg: Eastern Europe lore)

or some combination of the above

In the universes where ABO is applied to werewolves, it usually appears where multiple werewolves are already living/passing amidst normal human societies together. Technically, they’re IN CAPTIVITY; they’re not living in THE WILD. These werewolves are busy reigning in the wolf, not the human. Their community is their pack, and they’re led by a top werewolf, just like humans societies (Teen Wolf “alphas”, True Blood “packmasters”, etc). Otherwise they live like ordinary people, more or less. So by the article’s own stance that ABO ranks were only applicable to wolves not living in the wild, ABO actually applies!

In werewolf literature/film where the main character is bitten by a mysterious rogue/wild/feral (were)wolf who only exists as a plot device (usually killed in order to “cure” the character or lift the “curse”), there are no packs or ranks anyway, since that lone (were)wolf was a one-off for the sake of the storyline.

So it’s not surprising at all if werewolf packs started adopting human terms to describe what they are, even if before the 1950s they didn’t have a name for their system -- which brings up another point:

We’re taking it for granted that fictional werewolf packs around the world are even speaking English and using ABO tropes in the first place. Who’s to say that wolf packs in Europe and Mexico and Africa and Asia and the Arctic and North America are all using the same terms to describe themselves? Especially when you think about the social structures already inherently different around the world, applied on top of the ways different cultures perceive animals like wolves. You already get hints when looking at werewolves/wolves/canines in mythology and folklore and seeing how different they are!

I just think the article took the whole thing too seriously; suspend your disbelief. No one expects werewolf fiction to be scientifically accurate -- it’s myths and horror and pop culture, and the ABO kink/trope emerged from it via Supernatural fanfiction, not some special on Animal Planet or National Geographic issue. It’s all FICTION.

So,, you can call me Cait or Void, I'm 18, female, and from Scotland so GMT timezone but you'll quickly find I have no sleeping schedule and am online pretty much always. I want to talk OOC to plan and get to know you, but in OOC I might be a bit awkward at first but I'll warm up quickly, no worries. So, onto the RP stuff: I RP 3rd person only, 1st person seems odd and 2nd person freaks me out to say the least. It's more like inserting ourselves into the world and I'd usually rather not be in place of my characters. Platforms: Skype and google docs are the only two I've really used so far, but could probably be convinced to use anything other than email, tumblr, or kik. Fandom/Original?: Both, I mostly do original currently but have done long RPs in both. I will obviously have to like the fandom and know a character enough to feel comfortable trying to portray them though. For OC/OC I usually make up OCs for each scenario, but it's okay if you have set OCs you'd like to use. Reply length: Varies, will mostly reply on the length my partner is writing but usually at least one or two paragraphs and can stretch up to around 10 if lots of description & reactions are needed. I don't really mind what you reply as long as it's not one liners and is appropriate to the situation, also I love a bit of insight to characters thoughts and feelings. Types/Tropes/Etc: Romance is pretty much a necessity, but otherwise I'm very open. I enjoy RPs better if they have some drama/angst and at least have slight twists from reality, so if we're doing slice of life kind of stuff I'd usually prefer characters to have something setting them apart from normal every day humans (ie: Animal hybrids, powers, etc). I'm also into fantasy, sci-fi, heroes AUs etc. We can talk more about tropes and what fits into each individual story though.
