He placed one hand on the hunter's shoulder, at the very same spot he'd first held his soul when he'd raised him from hell all those years ago. Before Dean had a chance to react, Castiel shoved him out of the way, away from the danger. With one last tearful look at the man he loved, he turned to face his death with a smile.

Dean Winchester was saved.

He held onto that thought as the Empty swallowed him and dragged him into an endless slumber, as it tortured him with the memories of his failures and regrets, forcing him to relive them again and again; Jimmy, Anna, Balthazar, Purgatory, the leviathan, the Great Fall, Lucifer... Sometimes it brought in help. Every angel who had ever died rested in the Empty, many of whom had been killed by him or the Winchesters.

Yet, despite the eternal suffering, he didn't regret his choice. He had told Dean what he needed to, and in doing so had saved him one last time. He had faith in the Winchesters and Jack. They had beaten impossible odds many times before. They would find a way to defeat Chuck. His only regret was that he wouldn't be there to enjoy the victory with them. Never again seeing Jack's smile, never again helping Sam in the library or listening to Dean sing along to his music as they rode in the impala. But it was worth it.

Jack: "Where's Cas?"

Sam: "Dean?"

Dean: "He saved me. Billie was coming after us, and Cas summoned the Empty. It took her, and it took him. Cas is gone."

I think this episode's relative silence about Cas is actually one of the most interesting things about it because it really draws attention to the major hole in Dean's story, which is how he summoned the Empty. The Then for this episode doesn't include the "I love you" and most of the other mentions of Cas are moved to the deleted scenes, and then the one time we think he's back it's actually Lucifer doing his impersonating-your-dead-lover routine, basically what I'm saying is the lack of acknowledgement of what Cas said is the acknowledgement, it's the one thing they can't talk about, because he's still everywhere in this episode--Dean's whole "that's not who I am" indicates he hasn't simply been forgotten, however much Chuck might be trying to erase him, like I do think on some level the execs were trying to downplay what happened in the previous episode but that makes the fact that Dean internalizes what Cas said so much more poignant: the reason they don't talk about Cas is there's nothing to say; he loved Dean, and he's gone now, and Dean's still here, so he's spending the rest of the series trying to be the man Cas died for.

She crosses her arms, letting out a sigh of annoyance. This girl has no idea what she's gotten herself into. "Let's make our escape!" If they stuck around here, the ghost would probably come back. "I'll explain what's going on later." Addison takes the woman by the hand, leading the way out of the old library. The atmosphere around them is tense and every sudden noise Addison hears has her on edge. This is going to be a long day, she can tell.

supernatural makes me CRAZYY because its not just that the characters are trapped in a narrative it's that the characters are born into one narrative and then written over a million times. John was a shitty dad his morality is THE elephant in the room from the beginning of the show. references to the family business and family duty were always sardonic and tragic that's not a fan reading that's the POINT that's the PREMISE. so for the show to end the way it did if taken at face value is like. I'm putting everyone involved in a cage and asking them what they think their show was about.

Fergus slowed to a stop carefully, gently knocking on the front door. He didn't want to alarm her any more than she already was. "Hannah? I brought the heavy blanket, as well as some snacks courtesy of Willa."

Hannah looks up from where she's curled up on the bed, still crying, a wreck from the discussion in the group chat. It had been exceptionally triggering and painful to get through, and then she'd snapped and now she was just so drained.

Sniffling, she forces herself to uncurl and get up, going over and opening the door for him, still shaking and crying, a total wreck. She looks up at him, shaking. "Tha-- thank--" She sniffles, her voice breaking with sobs.

She's in the library sitting at a table with her laptop in front of her. The motel she's staying at doesn't have wifi, so she had to come to the public library to use there's. Garth came along and she assumed it was to help. But now, it's clear to her that he only came to talk her out of this.

Standing up from her seat, Addison places her hands on the table in front of her. Hands form into fists as she stares at the man sitting across from her. "Garth, if I don't go in some idiot will and get themselves killed!" she says, her voice raising slightly. "I have to find out who the ghost is and what's keeping them in that house. If that means going in alone, so be it!"

A loud, "SHHH!", can be heard, coming from the librarian sitting at the check out desk nearby.

Addison gasps, realizing she's getting too loud. A quick apology is mouthed to the librarian. Then, Addison turns her attention back to Garth. "I've fought ghosts before. I'll be fine. And if you aren't willing to help me with this, you can leave."
