Solutions to Nonlinear Equations
For @currentlylurking for the Phic Phight. :)
.
“Ancients, Vlad. I’m not rejecting you because I’m a rebellious teenager and you’re an adult, I’m rejecting you because you’re incredibly creepy.”
Vlad sniffed in what he hoped was an aristocratic manner and raised an eyebrow, minutely adjusting his grip on Daniel to keep him pinned to the floor.
“We’re human-ghost hybrids, Daniel. I’d hoped that you’d have realized by now that we are meant to be ‘creepy.’”
Daniel squirmed and began to mutter into the carpet. “Clockwork never acts like this, I’m fine with him—”
Vlad pulled back as if burned. He hadn’t heard that name in—in—
In a long time.
Years.
The thought was almost expelled from his head when Daniel managed to elbow him in the jaw hard enough to make him see stars. Before he knew it, Daniel had slipped from his grasp and zoomed away.
Whatever aspersions Vlad cast on Daniel’s mastery of his ghostly abilities, the boy was fast. When he put his mind to escaping instead of picking a fight, he managed it more often than not, to Vlad’s great frustration. Hence Vlad’s usual strategy of needling the younger half-ghost until fighting was the only thing on Daniel’s mind.
He set down on a nearby roof. There went his plans for the day. Which, admittedly, had consisted of distracting Daniel while his ghostly minions set up a nasty surprise for him at the school, hence making him fail his test, which would, in turn, convince Maddie and Jack to let Vlad set Daniel up with a tutor, something he had suggested to them earlier, and—
Well. Daniel would find them, now, no doubt.
Ah, well.
He had more important things on his mind, now. Such as, how in two worlds did Daniel know Clockwork? Because Daniel never just said things like that. He barely knew anything about ghost culture. He wouldn’t know to bring up obscure, secretive, ghost historical figures. He wouldn’t know what that particular name would mean to Vlad.
Tongues of fire flared out of his fingers, bringing a measure of stability to the gyrations of his core and his emotions.
Daniel knew Clockwork. And, it seemed, met him with some regularity. Enough for him to compare his actions to Vlad’s.
Would that ghost never be satisfied with ruining Vlad’s life? Was he not satisfied with—
He cut off the thought, shaking his head. Never mind that.
What Vlad needed to do was find Clockwork. Which meant inducing Danny to go to him at a time when Vlad when Vlad could follow. Which meant determining when he had visited Clockwork in the past. An undertaking to be sure.
He closed his eyes and teleported to his lab beneath his mansion.
“Maddie!” he called out, even before his body had fully reformed.
The hologram flickered to life with a faint crackled from the projector. “What is it, sugarpie?” it asked with a smile.
“Review the audio recordings from Fentonworks,” ordered Vlad. “Search for the term ‘Clockwork.’ Report findings to me.”
“Sure thing, honey!”
Vlad had to review the cheerfulness settings on the Maddie program. Maddie was upbeat, but not that upbeat. This was almost sickly sweet.
He threw himself into a nearby chair.
Clockwork. He thought he’d never hear that name again. Not after he’d been literally and figuratively ghosted by him.
He telekinetically pulled a book off his shelf. He ran his fingers over the leather tooling on the cover. The book had been given to him by Clockwork, years ago, when he was still in that hospital.
Clockwork had been the one to first show him the Ghost Zone, and all the wonders in it. Clockwork had been his friend, his only friend, through that long, agonizing hospital stay. He had been supportive, wonderful, kind. He visited often, though not on a regular schedule. He’d helped Vlad ride out the waves of misery and anger that so often threatened to overwhelm him.
Then, without warning, nothing.
No goodbye. The last time he left, he had even said something along the lines of ‘see you soon,’ although the memory was frayed from age and Vlad could no longer recall the exact words. For a long time, Vlad had worried something disastrous had happened to Clockwork. But then he had finally managed to build his own portal, reach the Ghost Zone under his own power, and, according to every search he did, every line of inquiry that bore fruit, Clockwork was just fine.
Vlad had been furious. He had been betrayed. He had spent the better half of a decade trying to plot revenge against Clockwork, before realizing that was akin to plotting revenge against a god and turning his sights to a more manageable target.
Now…
Now, Vlad just wanted answers. Both as to the reason behind his abandonment and as to why Clockwork was apparently repeating history with Daniel.
“Sweetie pie,” said the hologram, with a chime, “audio processing complete. There are over ninety-nine instances where the word ‘clockwork’ is mentioned. Would you like to play the selected files?”
“Yes,” said Vlad. “Include the video portions where available, and the thirty seconds immediately prior to and following the mention.”
He turned his attention to the nearest screen. He had a lot of videos to watch.
There was an envelope pinned to it. It was sealed with wax, impressed with the image of a pocket watch and the initials CW. Vlad attempted, and failed, to suppress the growl that grew in the back of his throat. Was this a joke to Clockwork?
He tore the envelope from the screen, ripped it open with equal viciousness, and began to read.
.
Three cups sat on the tea service tray next to the teapot.
“Are you expecting someone else,” asked Danny, “or am I going to break one of these?”
Clockwork chuckled as he began to pour the tea. “The former,” he said. “Although you may always surprise me with the latter.”
He handed Danny his cup. Danny inhaled deeply. It smelled sweet. “What is it?” he asked.
“A chamomile blend,” said Clockwork. “For calm.”
“I think Sam drinks chamomile before she goes to bed,” observed Danny, offhandedly. “Who’s coming?”
“You’ll see soon enough.”
Danny made a face. “Do you have to be mysterious all—”
The front door of Clockwork’s lair slammed open, and Danny jolted forward in alarm – the only people who regularly did that were the Observants, who didn’t much care for Danny – but Clockwork put a steadying hand on his shoulder and rewound his tea into his cup.
“Clockwork!” came the expected yell. The yeller, however…
“Is that Vlad?” asked Danny, not quite scandalized, but more than a little surprised.
“Why, yes,” said Clockwork.
“Did you – Clockwork, did you invite him here?”
“Other than the Observants,” said Clockwork, “no one can enter unless I will it.” He took a sip of his tea.
“But,” started Danny.
Clockwork raised a hand. “Don’t worry, he’ll find us soon enough.” He repurposed the hand to pat Danny’s knee. “And even should he prove to be in a combative mood, I will not allow you to come to harm. You are safe here, Daniel.”
“Thanks,” mumbled Danny, looking away, towards the door in the sitting room through which Vlad would presumably enter.
Sure enough, a few seconds later Vlad half-flew half-skidded into Clockwork’s sitting room. He leveled an accusatory finger at Clockwork. “You!” he proclaimed, with a great deal of venom.
“Hello, Vladimir, I’ve poured you some tea. Why don’t you sit down? I understand it has been some time.”
“You under-? No! I will not sit down! I will not drink your tea. Not after you abandoned me for over a decade, just like that bumbling oaf—”
“Hey!” interjected Danny, not only because Vlad had once again insulted his father, but because he could tell that Clockwork, regardless of his stoic façade, was actually quite upset.
“Don’t interrupt me, Daniel,” snapped Vlad. “You don’t know what this, this ghost is. What he does. You don’t know that he gets close to you, makes you think you’re friends, and then drops you without a moment’s notice. Did you think it was funny to string along a man in dire straits? Did you?”
“I did not abandon you, Vladimir, I—”
Vlad scoffed and went on a tirade that Danny honestly found hard to parse. But it sounded like Vlad and Clockwork had known each other in the past and then fallen out of contact in a way that aggravated Vlad’s abandonment issues. Which didn’t seem like Clockwork at all, but Vlad sounded extremely certain and insistent, and Clockwork’s upset was actually finding its way into his voice, now. Danny didn’t—
With all the force and abruptness of epiphany, Danny realized what was going on here.
“Wait, wait, wait,” said Danny, putting down his cup. “Vlad, breathe or whatever. Clockwork, you did tell Vlad that you experience time nonlinearly, right?”
“Of course,” said Clockwork, clearly offended.
“But Vlad, ah, had you gone through natural portals often when you met Clockwork? Or, like, did you ever see him without him initiating contact?”
“I didn’t have my portal built yet, Daniel, so, no.”
Danny turned to Clockwork. “Why did you-? No that doesn’t matter. Haaauuuhh, Clockwork, do you have-?”
Clockwork waved a hand and a whiteboard appeared.
“Thanks,” said Danny, picking a marker up from the little shelf on the bottom. He uncapped it, then recapped it. “Actually, before that. Vlad—” he pointed at Vlad, who looked about one second from exploding “—you have some idea of how old Clockwork is, right? Or at least how old ghosts can get?”
“Yes, Daniel,” said Vlad, managing to overlay his supercilious ‘I know better than you’ attitude over his still obvious anger.
“Okay, great. So, just to establish, Clockwork has been around at least since, uh, beginning of time?”
“Give or take,” agreed Clockwork. “Although I have not experienced it all directly.”
“Right,” said Danny. “Just, already, his perception of time is different from our because of age differences.”
Vlad looked slightly less angry, and slightly closer to curious.
“But, then, there’s the larger issue,” continued Danny. This time his uncapping of the marker was decisive. He drew a flat, straight, horizontal line across the whiteboard. “This is our timeline. We deal with time linearly. We’ve also got, I don’t know, parallel timelines, like this.” He drew several more lines. “You following so far?”
“Yes, Daniel, I’ve read my share of science fiction.”
He was probably rolling his eyes. Curse his solid-colored red eyes. It made interpreting his looks and figuring out where he was looking during a fight much more difficult.
“Anyway, Clockwork isn’t on any of these lines. Because he experiences time nonlinearly.” He drew a squiggly up and down line on the board that resembled the world’s saddest sine wave. Or cosine wave. There wasn’t a y-axis on the not-quite-graph, so it wasn’t like anyone could tell the difference. They were effectively the same.
And Vlad still made fun of him for failing math. Danny knew plenty about math. He just didn’t have time to do the work. Mostly because of Vlad.
“Now, that, that is Clockwork’s timeline. It isn’t always in contact with ours. It’s, like, solutions to a system of equations. Nonlinear equations,” he specified, in case it had been too long since Vlad had encountered basic high-school-level algebra.
“It is somewhat more complicated than that, Daniel,” said Clockwork, exasperated. “It’s more of—"
“Yeah, but this gets the idea across more than the whole parade metaphor, doesn’t it?”
“I would say not. This doesn’t even begin to touch on my abilities.”
“That’s because we’re just talking about your perception of time,” said Danny. He considered for a moment. “And also your ability to interact with our timeline.”
“Which includes my ability to perceive multiple timelines.”
“But that’s complicated, and I still don’t get it,” complained Danny.
“It is less complicated than what you are currently trying to explain.”
“To you maybe, but the whole point of this is that you aren’t seeing things the same way we are. You disappeared on Vlad, what, a decade ago?” He looked to Vlad for confirmation.
“A decade is hardly any time at all,” said Clockwork with exasperation. He sipped at his tea.
“It was fifteen years.”
Clockwork made a somewhat dismissive motion with a gloved hand. “It’s a tiny fraction of your life as a whole.”
“It’s… closer to a third of his current lifetime,” said Danny with a wince. “Or a fourth? I don’t know how old you are, dude.”
“I went to college with your parents.”
“I know, and you were already graying then. Your age is weirdly hard to place.”
Vlad gave Danny a look, but his body language was no longer screaming ‘I’m going to beat the snot after you.’ Danny counted that as a win under the current circumstances. He disliked Vlad, but in a fight with Clockwork… Well, Clockwork could demolish just about anyone.
Not that Clockwork would. Just that he could.
“Daniel—”
“Please, Vladimir. Just sit down. Try the tea. I made it for you. I knew you would be upset, although I could not see exactly why.” Clockwork was almost pouting, now. “Fifteen years is such a short time.”
“Clockwork, I’m fifteen.”
“I know,” said Clockwork, patting Danny on the knee. “Your timeline is so small. And cute.”
Vlad was now distinctly on his back foot, offput and disarmed. “His timeline is cute?”
“It is. Don’t worry, yours is almost as cute.”
Vlad opened and closed his mouth like a dying fish. Danny pushed the whiteboard away.
“Don’t worry about it too much,” he said. “Like I said, different perception of time.”
“I really didn’t mean to make you feel abandoned, Vladimir. I simply wanted to give you some time to, ah, how should I put this? Have space? Find yourself?”
Vlad sat heavily on the couch.
“You get used to it,” said Danny. “But, Clockwork, do you think you can talk him into having fewer evil plans? Because, really. There are way too many. Like, one a week. They’re destroying my grades. Have you ever seen anyone else who had weekly evil plans?”
“Evil plans, Vladimir? Really?”

Thorul Over Luthor (Part 4)
A/n: Meeting Superfriends should’ve been under better circumstances.
Warning: Quarterly Assassination Attempt, Casualties
Lena Luthor x StepSister!Reader, Supercorp, Sanvers
Word Count: 1620
Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3 || Part 4
Lena didn’t feel the need to put you back in school, you were pretty smart to know what was going around in the labs. Lena was impressed and offered you a job but you declined just wanting to stay with Lena.
In a sense you became her assistant. The two of you finished the daily station check-ins, something Lena developed to get to know her employees. It was an hour before lunch, with no paper work or urgent meetings and Lena wanted to practice her magic.
Lena was already in her office while you and Eve were scheduling her schedule to make it less stressful. You took the initiative to help Lena with her paper work, hence the extra hour for Lena to practice magic.
“Hey (Y/n/n), can you go to my personal lab and get the Acrata book?”
You smiled and signed towards Eve, ‘You’ve got the rest of the schedule?’
“I’ve been doing this before you were here, remember?” Eve laughed.
‘Right.’
You had grabbed Lena’s Acrata book and was heading back upstairs when a violent shake shook the building. Alarms were going off as employees rushed towards exits. You didn’t have time to check on Lena as someone told you the meaning of the alarms and led you towards the exit.
Apparently after several assassination attempts Lena had installed a system, in which would allow everyone in the building to evacuate. You stood outside the main entrance, you peeked over scared employees to get any sign of Lena. When you didn’t see Lena, you made a choice to run back into the building.
Security had seen you try to run back in and stopped you. You slightly panicked. You couldn’t lose Lena after everyone you loved has left you. She was your sister and she was your savior, you don’t even think you would’ve survived without Lena.
You looked back and forth between the security guards before you ran in unnoticed. You climbed the stairs towards Lena’s office.
There were more goons on her floor than you thought, you could easily intercept their body and get to Lena, but that left your body vulnerable. You took a deep breath ready to run through the floor when you heard a gun click beside you.
You closed your eyes and slowly turned towards the hitman and opened your eyes to intercept him. You held your own lifeless body in a choke hold and dragged yourself towards the office to get through the floor.
Lena had a shield to protect herself as other hitmen were shooting at Lena, with her golden eyes.
“Stop wasting your ammo on the Luthor. I have the leverage, her sister is more valuable to us if we want her to agree to our plans.” You said and hoped for the best.
The three men stopped firing as Lena dropped the shield. “Don’t you dare hurt her!” Lena’s eyes glowed as the windows shattered from Lena’s radiating anger.
Still in the man’s body you shot the three men in the head before you returned into your body, twisted the man’s arm, the one around your neck, took his gun and shot him in the head as well. You turned to Lena with a smile, when you felt a projectile enter your body.
Lena’s scream was inaudible as she caught your body before you fell, murder in her eyes at the agent bearing the D.E.O badge. Lena’s eye glowed before she stretch out her arm as he hit a wall. Alex rushed to the front lines as Supergirl sped in.
The agent who shot you wasn’t unconscious and Lena stalked towards him as her jaw clenched. She grabbed his collar before she punched him in the face. Kara pulled Lena away as she continued to scream at the agent yelling he had shot the wrong person.
Alex went over to you to place pressure on the wound, when she noticed you move you hands.
“Hey,” she kneeled beside you. “You’re okay now, we’re going to help you. Just stay awake for me, you can do that right.”
You nodded.
“Supergirl, she’s still alive. Get her to the D.E.O now!”
Kara hesitated. She gave Lena a reassuring smile and a light squeeze on her arm before scooping you into her arms and flew to the D.E.O.
“Are they all down?” Alex asked her team.
She received a mix of yes and confirmative.
“Round them up and bring them to the D.E.O. Lena your friend will be okay.”
“She’s my sister Director Danvers. Can you bring me there?” Alex nodded and guided Lena into a D.E.O van.
The van had closed its doors for Lena as Alex prepared to get in the passenger seat.
“Agent Jensen!” She called. “What has prompt you to shoot? Was there any indication that made you shoot?”
Jensen stay quiet.
“Was there any indication that made you shoot?” Alex asked again.
“No ma’am.”
“So you shot a civilian,” Alex huffed. “I will decide your punishment later.”
Lena refused to answer any questions, from the D.E.O and as Kara’s bestfriend, until she knew you were okay. She continued to pace just outside of the MedBay, with her eyes flickering gold. The CEO could hear the slight mutters of D.E.O agents who gossiped about her and her sister, hearing things like I bet she kidnapped the girl, she probably shot the girl herself, she’s probably like her brother. None of those things mattered anymore as all she worried about was you.
“Director Danvers, she is awake now.” Dr. Hamilton called as Lena immediately rushed in.
“Lena! Lena, I know you are worried but you have to let me finish with protocol.” Alex placed her hand on the woman’s shoulders before she stood over you. “Do you know your name?”
You nodded.
“Can you tell me?”
You raised your hands and signed your name.
“Do you know what year it is?”
You slowly showed the numbers on your hand.
‘I am Director Alex Danvers, you were shot. Do you remember anything?’ Alex signed as your eyes lit up.
‘I am Lena’s sister. I was grabbing something for her in her lab when the alarms went off. I was already outside, when I didn’t know where Lena was I ran back into her office. Where am I?’
‘You are in the D.E.O. Department of Extra-normal Operations. You are safe here. What happened after you ran in?’
You looked past Alex to partially intercept Lena to communicate with her. ‘She is asking what happened, should I tell her about my interception?’ Lena thought for a moment before she nodded.
‘Her floor was filled with men and I was about to run in when I heard a gun click behind me. I have the power to intercept people and I intercepted some goon to hold me hostage so I could get to Lena. They stopped firing when I said I have leverage, then I shot the men, went back to my own body and shot the other guy, then I got shot.’
‘I’ll let you rest alright.’
You smiled as Alex turned towards Lena to allow her to see you. “She’s brave I’ll give you that.”
“She was reckless and almost got herself killed,” Lena argued while she walked towards you.
‘Are you okay?’ You signed as Lena scoffed.
“You’re the one who got shot and you’re asking if I’m okay? Definitely not a Luthor.”
You stayed in the D.E.O for a couple of nights, Lena by your side of course. You were well enough to show Alex and Supergirl your powers and Alex wanted to recruit you as your interception powers would be useful. Lena however denied.
You have gotten to know Alex and Kara a lot more as you spent your time at the D.E.O and you even got your official game night invitation the week you were discharged.
Alex scolded Kara when she hugged you to hard as your face became pale. Kara had released you only to grab you wrist and introduce you to Superfriends.
‘What do you see in her?’ You asked Lena as she choked on the wine she drank.
Winn was excited to finally meet you, as he got kicked out during your intercept demonstration. He had a lot of questions, none you could really answer, even if you still had your voice. You ran into James a couple of times when the D.E.O needed Guardian’s help. He helped you get away from Winn so you could actually breathe. Nia and you instantly became friends, despite the language barrier at first. You both looked up to strong, powerful woman, and you both had similar struggles of individuality.
You took an immediate liking to Maggie. Something about her dimples made her easier to communicate with, it maybe had something to do with the fact the she was trained to read into a situation and act cautiously and care. You were amazed by the fact that J’onn was a Martian. The perks about having a mind reading space dad was that he could communicate without you lifting a finger. He was the first one, besides Lena, to figure out your communication skills. On accident of course, you got excited during a game night and J’onn stared at you with a confused but proud smile.
National City started to look up for you. Not only was your relationship with Lena stronger, you made new long lasting friends. There were minor instances when your back would give up due to the gunshot wound, and when that would happen Superfriends would turn into Superfam.

Legendary Arguments
Hi, all! It’s been forever. Here’s a 1578 word fic I wrote set in my Momsverse AU, where Laurel’s foster kid is Stephanie Brown and she’s also dating Felicity, who has a kid of her own. Previous installments have been Present Tense, Cautionary Tale, and The Nightmare Fallout. This one’s PG-13 for a couple of swearing instances and takes place when they’re comfortably living together and being cute and domestic because life is hell but fiction is great.
Buzzing from a persistent phone was a bad enough sign while dating a vigilante. But when said vigilante picked up that phone, squinted at the screen, slammed it back onto the nightstand, and proceeded to burrow deeper under the covers, that was an entirely new one for Felicity.
“Please tell me that’s not work,” she said, cracking one eye open. “If you get up, Shay will get up, and then we’ll all be up. Can’t they find somebody else?”
“It’s not work.” Laurel pulled a pillow over her head.
“Then why is it buzzing?”
“Because life is hell.”
“Something had better be on fire.” Giving in, Felicity levered herself up on one elbow and stretched over her girlfriend, reaching for the phone and the nightstand. “And if it’s not, it’s going to be when I get a hold of whoever it is.”
Laurel grumbled. “It’s the Legends group chat.”
She did not emerge from under the pillow, and the phone was locked. Felicity could have made short work of the security, but instead she just tapped the button on the side to silence it. Why Laurel couldn’t have done that herself, she didn’t know.
Wait: “The Legends are in town?”
“No. But they’re in this time zone. Or period. I don’t know, they’re halfway across the world which is why they’re texting at four in the fucking morning.” Laurel reached out blindly with one arm, nearly clipping Felicity’s chin with her elbow as she located a handhold and tugged. “Please don’t validate them with attention. They’ll never learn otherwise. It’s time for sleep.”
“You’re the one who didn’t silence your phone,” Felicity said grumpily, but Laurel did have a point. She acquiesced to the tugging and cuddled in, grateful for the body heat since they’d set the thermostat too low again. She was just drifting off to sleep when the sound of a pitiful cry broke over the baby monitor.
“Goddammit,” she said, but Laurel was already shoving the covers off. “You don’t have to, it’s my turn.”
“Penance for my sins of not shutting my phone off,” Laurel said, collecting the object in question from the nightstand. She stumbled a little on the way to the door, grunting as her shoulder hit the wall. Felicity was sure she heard her mutter, “Besides if I don’t answer them, they’ll probably just show up in person and it’s a school day.”
Felicity couldn’t argue that one, so she decided just to go back to sleep instead.
At some point, Laurel must have settled Shay back down to sleep, for she was curled up next to Felicity, phone clutched in one hand, when the alarm went off. She groused wordlessly, batting at Felicity when she tried to shake her awake.
“You said it yourself, babe,” Felicity said, sing-songing the words just to tease her. “School day. Wakey-wakey.”
“Give me coffee or give me death,” was the reply from somewhere in the covers.
Steph at least proved easier to wake than her foster mother, as the teenager was already up and working on her combinations against the training dummy Oliver had given her for her seventeenth birthday. She bounced from foot to foot, chattering away at Felicity about school and an upcoming history project as Felicity made coffee. Felicity could not remember a single cheerful morning from her own teenage years, but she kindly did not inform Steph that she might be an alien.
She also felt no remorse in sending both her and Shayna in to haul Laurel out of bed after the coffee was ready. Probably mean, but Laurel would be upset at being late for work the day after a night off.
She looked somewhat more awake and put together as she joined Felicity and the girls for breakfast. She set her phone on the table, facedown.
“Are they still going at it?” Felicity asked.
Steph looked up from her last minute calculus homework. “Who?”
“The Legends,” Laurel told her foster daughter. “And yes. It’s led to a very intense debate. People have taken sides. They’re writing manifestos. Well, Ray and Nate are writing manifestos. Sara’s just mooning them, as far as I can tell.”
“Over what?” Felicity asked. “Please tell me they’re not fighting. I don’t think time can take another Strudel Incident.”
“Gideon has built in protocols to keep that from happening again,” Laurel said.
Like that would actually stop the Legends. “Seriously, what are they arguing about?”
Laurel sighed. “Shayna.”
Even the toddler turned to give her a puzzled look over that one.
“Sara,” Laurel said with that patented mix of fondness and aggravation that applied to her sister, “was apparently bragging about being Aunt Sara, which means Nyssa is Aunt Nyssa by privilege of marriage. Except that an argument started that since you and I aren’t married, can Sara actually claim ‘auntship?’ And if Sara gets to be Aunt Sara, Ray wants to be Uncle Ray. And then Nate had opinions and it escalated from there, as you can imagine.”
Felicity realized she was staring with her coffee mug halfway to her mouth. Carefully she put it down. “They’re…arguing over what my kid’s going to call them? That’s what led to them blowing up your phone at four o’fu—dging clock in the morning?”
“Yes,” Laurel said, grimly.
“Hold up. I’m your actual legal kid,” Steph said. “If Sara is Aunt Sara to anyone, it should be me.”
“Yes,” Laurel said again.
“So why does Shay get all the attention?”
“Do you want to call them Aunt or Uncle So-and-So?” Laurel asked.
Steph paused. “No,” she said slowly, as though discovering it for herself as she spoke.
“Exactly. Though every single one of them has chimed in that they would be honored by the title, so there’s that.” Laurel reached out and squeezed Steph’s shoulder. “You know they consider you their favorite mascot.”
“Ha, ha,” Steph said, but she looked a little pleased as she ducked back to focus on her math homework.
“I’d say that I can’t believe this has led to an argument this big,” Felicity said. “But that’s a lie. I fully believe it.”
“Yup,” Laurel said, picking up her phone and walking it on its edges across the table. Felicity could see that she had 72 new messages.
“How is that even an argument?” Felicity asked.
“I don’t know. At one point I saw a message from Sara about ‘blood is thicker than water’ and then Nate, being the twerp he is, pointed out that it’s actually ‘the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.’ Which means friendship bonds are stronger than family bonds. So I learned something, amid all of the inanity. So there’s that.” Laurel twirled her phone around, clutching her coffee in her other hand like a lifeline. “None of them, by the way, have thought to ask either you or me to weigh in on this.”
“You’re in the group chat,” Felicity said. “They probably consider that your giving approval.”
“They don’t know I’m in there. Somebody tried to add Dinah and got the wrong one. Nobody has noticed.”
“Honest mistake. There are like thirty of you now,” Felicity said, grinning when Laurel wrinkled her nose at her.
Shay, gnawing on a strawberry slice, blew bubbles at the both of them.
“This is going to become an all-out war if we don’t do something,” Felicity said.
“Probably.” Laurel handed Shay another strawberry slice.
“So are we going to do something?”
“Honestly? I’m not sure. I’m kind of impressed by the caliber of arguments they’re making for and against their case.” Laurel shrugged. “It’s a little like a busman’s holiday for me.”
“Would it bother you to have them all be Shay’s honorary aunts and uncles?” Steph asked Felicity.
“And with one simple question, she proves herself capable of more logic than an entire group of time travelers,” Laurel said dryly, as Steph and Felicity laughed.
“If they promise to stop blowing up my girlfriend’s phone at all hours of the night, they can try and convince Shay to call them any non-offensive thing they like,” Felicity said. “It’s ultimately up to her.”
“Okay, good.” Steph turned to Laurel. “Can I see your phone?”
“Don’t set it to Thai again, please, that took me over an hour to get it back to English.” But Laurel handed over her phone.
Felicity made a mental note to check in on Steph’s hacking ability, as Laurel hadn’t even unlocked the thing and Steph had the messaging app open in record time. Her thumbs flew over the keyboard for a few seconds before she hit SEND and handed the phone back.
There was a pause and then seventeen messages seemed to come through at once.
“What did you just do?” Felicity asked.
“Oh, nothing much.” Steph buffed her nails on her school blazer and blew on her fingers. “Just ensured that Shayna’s going to have the best birthday presents from now ’til, like, eternity. If they want aunt or uncle status, awesome birthday gifts are the bare minimum. You’re welcome, little sis.”
She leaned across the table, fist extended. Gleefully, Shayna bumped her own strawberry-juice-stained fist against Steph’s knuckles.
Felicity met Laurel’s eyes over her coffee cup, mostly to hide her smile. “Have I mentioned lately that I love our life?” Laurel asked, and Felicity toasted her with her mug.
On the table, now ignored, Laurel’s phone continued to buzz away furiously.

Wolf Pack
Sean and Daniel are safe and reunited, but their journey has only begun. Once again, they'll take on life's toughest wilderness. The real world.
CHAPTER ONE
Forget everything you know about the Diaz family. Chances are, only some of it is true.
Chances are, only some of it is true. A few major details may have been left out by an eager third party looking to sell an unaffiliated biography. Dr. Julianna Flores sure didn't waste any time making that publishing deal. Of course, we wont' be seeing any of the royalties, though we can probably expect a biopic in the near future. I wonder if they'll get Bob Pancakes to play an older version of me. That would be pretty epic.
Like I said. Forget everything you read about us. This is the real story. Our story. The one where the wolf brothers get to finally live in a home....
With their Papa Wolf.
Thanks to our grandparents and some very expensive lawyers, we were able to get back into our dad's custody. Grandma Clare and Grandpa Stephen moved into a retirement community with a pool and everything, and left the house to us. Things were starting to look up.
We were finally getting back into the groove of living a normal life. You have no idea how much I missed the smell of fried eggs, bacon, and coffee in the morning.
Daniel was most excited to get back to school and see his friends. I'm still blown away about how much he actually likes doing his homework. He's even been doing extra credit. Sometimes I wonder about the negative impacts all of this must have had on him. I still couldn't bring myself to tell him that he was the one who started the fire that got us taken away. It would do more harm then good, so me and dad both agreed that it was best to keep that in the dark. But we've both been keeping an eye on him, especially when there's a fire involved.
Even though we were reunited and have a roof over our head again, thank God, things have been far from perfect. Now we have bills to pay, and with a house this big, it can get pretty steep. Dad got his auto repair busy back up and running, but it's barely enough to pay the electric company.
I wanted to help out, so I started doing repairs and upgrades for the neighbors. Now it's super reception for everyone.
For extra cash, dad's even been digging around town for anything worth selling. Although, sometimes he might find one or two collectibles he keeps for himself. He's still very much a geek, but I missed that about him. Probably where Daniel got it from. He also started a brand new garden. I'm happy to lend a hand.
When I'm not working my hands raw, me and the gang chill out at the drive-in. It's still pretty much abandoned, so we usually have the place all to ourselves.
I'm really glad Lyla gets along with everyone really well. Especially when they're ganging up on me. They make fun of my “fancy” cooking, but it never stops them from eating it. At least I know I can count on Jag. He practically vacuums anything you put in front of him. Thankfully for them, I've had a lot of practice.
It's always nice when I get to spend time with June. I know I made it awkward in the past, but I hope I didn't mess things up entirely. If only I had the courage to actually tell her how I felt.
Diaz and I have gotten really close. He's always checking up on me to make sure I'm staying out of trouble. He's like my partner in good deeds. We get a kick out of calling each other Diaz even though it drives the teachers crazy.
He also let's me know when it's way past my curfew. I'm going to get so much heat for this...
Of course, the moment dad sees me, he hounds me about getting in so late. I totally lost track of time. He says he understands, but still lectures me about responsibility. He says he just wants to make sure I'm safe, but that he trusts me to make better choices. I promise that if it ever happens again, I'll make sure to call. I'd rather make a promise I can actually keep rather then disappoint him. Maybe I should just set the alarm. Hopefully, I won't forget that too.
Dad has enough to worry about without me sending him into panic mode. I just wish he would make some time for himself.
Even if his friends come over and ask him to the gym he gives the excuse that he's too busy with reports and other business work. I don't even remember the last time my dad has ever did a push-up. I just wish he knew that he didn't have to stop going out just to watch over us. He should be enjoying his life too. I should probably make a better effort to earn his trust that I can handle things while he's away.
Another night on the job. The good thing about this family is that they're always way too busy to even notice me. It's weird that I go to school with the kids, but I've never even said one word to them. Now I'm in their house fixing their oven. It's even weirder that they live right next door.
Sending a selfie to June after a hard day's work. She says she thinks my uniform is cute. Gotta look professional.
Dad came in to thank me for working so hard. He knows that, me being a teenager, I'd much rather be hanging out with my friends listening to loud music, but he appreciates me helping out the family. He went on about how one day I'm going to have to do the same for my own family so it's good to get the experience. Way too soon to be talking about that, dad...but I get it.
Daniel and I had some bro time watching cartoons in the den. He talked about how some of his friends at school have pets, and he felt bad that we never went back to the farm to get Basil. I told him that we'd bring Basil home tomorrow morning. I completely forgot about the little guy. I really hope he's still alive....for Daniel's sake.
The next morning started off pretty rough. Someone left out last night's dinner and I completely lost it. We don't have money to just throw food away. I didn't mean to take it out on dad. I was just frustrated.
Dad said he would make sure they were more mindful. I could tell that he was upset with me for being angry, and I felt bad for yelling.
I immediately apologized, but dad said I needed to learn how to control my anger. He said there's better ways to get my point across. These days have been stressful, and I guess I've been carrying it all on my back. Spending so many days and nights trying to look out for me and Daniel on my own, I feel like I'm still in survival mode. Like I'm the one who has to take care of us. Dad reminded me that I'm not in this alone. That we're going to get through this by working together.
That it's okay to take a moment for myself. It won't be the end of the world. So I did a little gaming to cool off. It's great stress reliever.
I gave Logan a call to ask him if it were okay for me and Daniel to come over. He seemed happy to hear from us.
Daniel chatted with Harley on his tablet. I taught him how to not have his nostrils showing during video calls like a big face monster.
When he got to the farm, a bunch of emotions hit me at once. There were a lot of happy memories here, but also some of the darkest. The garden looked really bad. I guess no one took care of it after I left. It was sad seeing it like this. Maybe if I have some extra time on my hands, I could look after it again. Hard maybe.
Logan hadn't changed much since I saw him last. It was nice to hear his big, hearty laugh again. He seemed a lot happier.
He introduced me to Harley's mom, who seemed pretty cool. I guess you have to be to be an amazing artist.
Daniel was all business, right away asking about being able to take Basil home. Logan said their goldfish Swifty was keeping him company while we were away.
We were all set to take Basil home, when Daniel's big heart got in the way. He said that he didn't want to split up Basil and Swifty and thought it was best if Basil stayed with Logan. I couldn't have agreed more.
We went to the pond to find another frog instead.
I asked Daniel what he wanted to name this one. After some serious thought, he decided to name him Larry after the farm's secret lair. Kind of creepy, but who was I to judge.
We sat around and talked for a few hours, catching up. And that's when Logan revealed that he was selling the farm. He said it was better off this way. That the farm would go to someone who could actually take care of it instead of watching it dry up and wither away. He was going to move in with his daughter and Harely, take the load off. As happy as I was that he got to be closer to his family, I was sad to see him go. The farm had become a part of my life, and now who knows what it was going to be turned into. Would I ever get to see it again?
I stopped by the barn for one last look inside.
Man, I was really going to miss this place.
I couldn't believe how quickly things could change. But I guess that's life. It's always good to enjoy what you have before it's taken away from you. It's something I should know a lot about, but it's something I don't think you'll ever get used to.
Take Daniel for instance. Sometimes I take it for granted that he's still a little kid. It feels like I have forever to watch him grow up. But time moves fast, and the truth is he won't be that carefree, little kid forever. These are the moments I have to remember to take in. This is why it's so important for us to tell our own story, through our own eyes. This is the way we were meant to be remembered. Thanks Julianna, but I'll take it from here.
This is the true story of The Wolf Pack.

Bob Heldreth: Busy … Answering the Call
Wheeling’s Bob Heldreth is a man of many talents. He’s a fighter of fires, a saver of lives, a bringer of the funny and even lord of the dance? That last one is debatable, depending on which local supermarket owning family you are asking. But one thing is for certain, Bob Heldreth may be the hardest working man in Wheeling. And, he’s usually doing it with a smile. A 2000 graduate of Wheeling Park, Heldreth set off to West Liberty to study broadcast journalism. He planned on an exciting career in television and worked part-time at WTRF as a videographer. He also worked as a volunteer firefighter in nearby Clearview. More than once Heldreth’s beeper went off during class and, without hesitation, he took off to answer the call. Call it foreshadowing if you will, but early on Heldreth’s desire to help others was evident. Heldreth opted for civil service and took the fire test after meeting his future wife and realizing being a family man was in his future. He officially joined the Wheeling FD in 2007 and currently serves as a lieutenant. Never one to settle for one job, Heldreth also works for Panhandle Cleaning & Restoration as its marketing director. That’s in addition to the hours he dedicates to the community and charitable pursuits. In short, Heldreth cares. He cares about his wife and the two both work diligently to provide a loving home for their daughter. He also cares about people. His life’s work is proof enough of that. He’s willing to head out that door and risk life and limb for his neighbors. It’s not a call man are willing to answer, but it’s one Heldreth is happy to pick up.
How old were you when you realized you wanted to be a firefighter? You were a volunteer while going through college and during your days at WTRF. Was videography what you planned to do until you got on with Wheeling FD, or did you set out to go into news and then decided later to make a career out of fire service?
I joined some friends in becoming members of the Clearview Volunteer Fire Department in 1998 – but I had always thought my career would be in TV. After graduating high school in 2000, I started the Broadcast Communications program at West Liberty while also working part-time at WTRF as a videographer. During that time, I responded to a mutual aid structure fire at Wheeling Station with the Wheeling Fire Department. Assistant Chief Mike Zambito said he liked my work ethic and told me I should take the next Wheeling Fire test. After college, I went full time at WTRF, which is where I also met the woman who would become my wife. I really wanted to stay local, but I wasn’t making enough to build a life here, so I took the next civil service fire test. In 2007, I finally got my call from the department and got married a few months later.
Heldreth posed for a quick photo with his wife, Leslie, during an outing.
Is it tough to handle working 24-hour shifts, especially given your other job, community work and family?
For the last 13 years I have worked 100+ hours a week. I have always had a second job – first selling copiers and printing, and more recently, when I’m not at the firehouse, I’m at Panhandle Cleaning & Restoration, where I’m the marketing director. Some guys say the second job is curse; you get used to the extra income, and you can’t go back. I couldn’t imagine only working the 10-day a month fire department schedule – my wife says I can’t sit still. I have been a firefighter for my daughter’s entire life. She knows each morning by the uniform I’m wearing whether I’ll be back home that night or not until after 5 p.m. the next day. Since I’m always on call for both jobs, it’s not unusual for me to leave for a few hours in the middle of the night. When Addy wakes up in the morning and I’m looking a little rough, she has no idea that I left and worked all night. My family is used to my crazy schedule because it’s all they’ve ever known.
Proud Papa: Bob Heldreth hoists his daughter and shows off her artwork as a thank you to the men and women at the fire station.
You handle a ton of calls as an EMT in addition to fire calls. In both instances, there is a very real possibility that you will have someone’s life in your hands. Do you ever need to sit and need to decompress after a call of those types of situations, especially if it’s a large fire or life-or-death medical emergency?
After any call, the only thing you can reflect on is that you did everything in your knowledge and ability to save a person’s life PTSD is very real in the fire service. For me personally, I think time heals most wounds, but I am fortunate to have a good support system in my coworkers and we can all lean on each other after serious calls. I’m also Local 12’s Vice President and have worked to ensure that our members have access to the resources they need when it comes to handling the stress of the job. We see an excessive amount of death and suffering – without properly addressing our feelings, it can lead down a dark path.
You’re also really involved in the community. How do you make time for that and why is it so important to you?
I really like my city. We have so many wonderful things going on despite being such a small town. It’s also just a lot of fun to be involved with things like Dancing With the Ohio Valley Stars, the Lip Sync Challenge, and helping the United Way with the Night at the Races fundraiser. I also try to do as much as I can to connect the Wheeling Fire Department to our community, including the planning and construction of our Fallen Firefighter Memorial, raising money for Augusta Levy after their fire, our yearly Night Before Christmas video (which is read by firefighters), and our annual Guns and Hoses hockey game with the Wheeling Police Department.
Brian Riesbeck of Riesbeck's Food Markets and Bob Heldreth had a comical back and forth going during their appearance on Dancing With the Ohio Valley Stars
You’ve always had a great sense of humor and seem to balance the serious side with the goofy side, as anyone who witnessed your banter with fellow Dancing With the Ohio Valley Stars contestant Brian Riesbeck can attest. Is that your normal MO but you’re able to flip the switch once that alarm goes off and it’s go time? If so, does that make it easier to focus on the task at hand and not get caught up in the danger aspect of it?
First, I’d like the record to show that Brian Riesbeck is my arch nemesis – and the only thing that helps me sleep at night is knowing that I’m a better dancer than he is. I like humor, and I like to make people laugh. My wife says I tell complicated jokes. My daughter loves my dad jokes and puns. As I have risen through the ranks at the fire department, sometimes I think I’ve told too many jokes. But, like they say: If you laugh at your own joke, it must be funny. At the firehouse, humor is sometimes a good way to deal with stress and even tragedy. Although, when the bell rings, it’s time to get serious. Read the full article

Decoded (Stiles Romance Sequel) ~Chapter 1~
The night was cool and damp for a spring night. I pressed the jacket closer to my body as I quietly snuck out the front door, making sure I closed it quietly behind me. I hunched my body and I squinted my eyes shut as the door squeaked loudly. So much for wanting to sneak out quietly. Waiting for a moment, I held onto the door knob as I listened carefully for any signs of my parents before dropping my hand and letting out a sigh in relief. Turning over, I gasped as I was quickly met by lips pressed tightly against my own. Pulling away, I looked up into my boyfriend’s gorgeous hazel eyes and his cute half smile.
“Sorry, I couldn’t wait any longer,” he chuckled.
“You scared the living crap out of me!” I breathed out, pushing on his chest.
“I’ll make it up,” he muttered, leaning over and letting his lips brush against mine as he wrapped himself around my waist, pulling me close. I snaked my hands up to his broad shoulders and smiled.
“We better get going before my parents notice,” I whispered, pulling away and running off with his hand in mine.
~
I leaned over and laid down on the windshield while making myself comfortable over the hood of his car. Looking up at the night sky, I smiled as Mark finally laid down next to me.
I chuckled and shook my head as I realized if I had asked myself a few weeks back if I had ever thought about having a boyfriend anytime soon, I would have said no. But three weeks later and I’ve become one of those girls.
Mark and I met one day while Stiles and I had been sent off to lunch detention as a make up for the missed time we had completely forgotten about for pulling the fire alarm back in October. It was ordinary and most definitely unexpected. Up to that point, I was still hung up on Stiles, but with Malia coming around more often, I could feel myself starting to get tired of being left behind. That’s when Mark came along. He was the only one chasing after my attention, even if I didn’t want it at the time. This only caused Stiles to get a little defensive, claiming he didn’t trust him. And at first, I agreed, knowing well Mark’s type. He was a bad boy and his constant being in detention further proved that. But maybe that’s what attracted me to him.
Our story was definitely not love at first sight. In fact, when he first tried to ask me out, he came off as arrogant and I merely rolled my eyes and walked away, scoffing at the thought. But the more he pursued, the more I started to fall for it. He was persistent and wouldn’t give up. Before I knew it, his gorgeous hazel eyes were starting to become addictive and his wicked smile soon became my kryptonite. It got to the point where it was hard to say no.
I adjusted my body as he wrapped an arm around my shoulders and pulled me close. I bit my lip as I looked up to him, taking in his every feature. His dark brown hair was side swept under his beanie. His lips were a light shade of pink and his nose sharp and pointed. He was handsome and it was hard to believe he had managed to make me forget about my own heartache about Stiles in just a matter of days. But then again, with his looks, it was no surprise. Mark looked down to me, taking notice of my staring. He simply chuckled and shook his head as he looked back up to the sky.
“You’re doing it again.”
I pressed my lips together as I looked down and chuckled, reaching out for his hand and intertwining our fingers. “Sorry.”
Even with his bad boy reputation, Mark turned out to be full of surprises. For instance, when it came down to us, he was different. He was kind and sweet and not at all the arrogant boy I first met. However, he did come to have a secret I managed to stumble upon one night during a full moon.
“Are you really going to Mexico?” he finally sighed, turning his head to face me.
It came to me as a surprise that I had managed to start dating a werewolf, but then again. It’s Beacon Hills. It’s no real surprise.
“Yeah, I have to,” I muttered, turning to face him.
Stiles wasn’t too pleased. In fact, it only increased his mistrust. He went into protective best friend in matter of .2 seconds. But I chose to ignore his protests and continued my relationship with Mark. He made me happy, and everybody knew, I needed to be happy, especially after having dealt with Allison’s death.
“I don’t know how you guys do it,” Mark shook his head, turning to look back up at the sky.
“Do what?”
“Just drop everything and do as Scott says just because one werewolf goes missing—”
“Because we trust Scott and he trusts Derek. It’s why we need to save him.”
“I just don’t get it.”
“We’d do the same for you,” I smiled, rubbing my thumb against his.
“I doubt it, considering your friend Stiles doesn’t like me very much,” he muttered, grimacing slightly.
“But you’re my boyfriend and I care about you, so they’d do it,” I sat myself up, dropping my hold on his hand as I kept my eyes on him. “And don’t worry so much about Stiles. He’ll warm up to you… eventually.” He took in a deep breath and sat up as well.
“Well, when do you guys leave?” he asked.
“Tomorrow, we already told our parents we were going camping,” I answered.
“Tell me what exactly happened again?” I bit my lower lip as I looked up at the night sky, remembering what had happened the night before.
“Okay, so how long has it been?” Stiles asked as Lydia and I followed after him and Scott.
“Weeks,” Scott answered, making his way toward a cabinet. “He hasn’t gotten back to any of my texts.”
“Does Derek ever return your texts?” I asked, making a face as the rest of us gathered around the examining table of the vet clinic.
“Once, definitely once,” Scott answered, looking to all of us as he pulled out a container and brought it up to the table. “But this time it felt different. So, I went to the loft. The alarm was on, everything looked okay, but then I found these…” He pushed the container forward as he opened it. Stiles looked over and put his hand in.
“Shells?” I asked as Stiles pulled a golden bullet shell.
“Yeah, I sent a picture to Deaton, he said it’s the mark of a family of hunters based out in Mexico. The Calaveras,” Scott finished off.
“What would they want with Derek?” Lydia asked. Stiles placed the bullet shell back and raised a hand up to his chin.
“You don’t think they killed him, do you?” Stiles asked.
“I don’t know,” Scott sighed heavily before looking over to both of us girls. “It’s why you guys are here.”
“Why me?” I asked, raising an eyebrow before turning to Lydia. “I mean she’s the one who can tell if people are dead.”
“Yeah, thanks,” Lydia muttered as Scott slid the container toward her.
“I’m just saying,” I chuckled as I looked to her.
“Well, you tend to have visions ahead of time about what’s going to happen or what we’re going to deal with, so it’s worth a shot,” Scott muttered, looking to me.
“You haven’t had any nightmares?” Stiles asked with a grimace as he turned to me.
“You’re out of luck in that area. Nothing here,” I shrugged as I crossed my arms.
“Okay, well then Lydia,” Stiles said, looking up to her. She sighed out heavily as she grabbed a hold of the container grudgingly. She pursed her lips as she dug her hand in and pulled out all the bullet shells. We all watched as she played with them, intermingling them in between her fingers before closing her eyes and letting them drop to the table surface. The moment the last bullet hit, her eyes flung open.
“What is it?” I asked, my brows merging as she kept her gaze to her side.
“Is—is he dead?” Stiles asked.
“No,” she simply answered, not bothering to look at us, “But I’m not sure he’s alive either.”
“What does that mean?” Scott asked.
“I don’t know,” she whispered. “There’s something not right, I just… I don’t know…”
“So, if the Calaveras have him, how do we find them?” Stiles asked. Scott’s brows furrowed as he reached out for a bullet shell, lifting it up to his face as if examining it.
“Mexico,” he answered.
“So, you’re just basing this on a hunch?” Mark asked. I simply nodded as I pulled up my knees closer to my body. “Okay! Well, I’m not stopping you then if you really feel the need to help!” Mark raised his hands up as he looked down, smiling slightly to himself before finally turning to me. “But just promise me one thing. Come back home to me, okay?” I smiled and leaned in toward him, pecking his lips softly and pulling away.
“I promise,” I muttered.
~
The next day, right after school we all went over the plan over and over on the drive there, already cramped enough with six people in one jeep. Finally by the time we all managed to stretch our legs out, one by one we began to slip into something to help us blend in. Pulling at my white spaghetti strap romper, I adjusted my black cut off leather jacket over my arms as I slipped into matching wedge booties.
“Was it necessary for you to get over dressed?” Stiles muttered as he eyed my outfit, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly. “Not—not that you don’t look good.”
“Just trying to blend in,” I chuckled, pulling at my shoe. “If we want the plan to work we have to blend in. I mean, it’s still a party.”
“Alright, are you guys ready?” Scott asked, making his way up to us. I simply nodded. “We’ll start sneaking in, one by one. Adelyn, you’re the first to go in. Then Malia, then Kira, and finally I’ll go in. Once we’re all in, Stiles and Lydia that’s when you make your move.”
“Okay, got it,” I sighed, looking over to the two guards that stood at the front of the town hall, suddenly feeling nervous. “This plan better work.”
“It will,” Scott assured as he gave a slight push forward. I pursed my lips as I stepped forward, and clenching my fists at my side slowly stepping toward the guards.
“Be—be careful!” I heard Stiles call out. Looking back, I watched as they all disappeared into the crowd, not wanting to make it obvious we were all together. Turning back, I took in a deep breath and let myself to stand taller as I walked, attempting to play a confidence I knew was shaky at the moment. Reaching the guards, I smiled.
“Fui invitada a la fiesta (I was invited to the party),” I began in my fluent Spanish. They looked to each other suspiciously before looking back to me. I took in a deep breath as I attempted to make myself seem less suspicious by tilting my head to the side and giving a flirtatious smile to the youngest guard. “No me digas que no me vas a dejar entrar (Don’t tell me you’re not going to let me in)?” I almost pouted before biting the corner of my lip. He shifted around and cleared his throat before nodding toward the other guard, finally letting me in. “Gracias, chicos (Thanks, guys)! Adios (Bye)!” I giggled, attempting to keep up the act as I walked through the door. Slowing down, I looked around the narrow hallway as the walls seemed to tremble with the beat of the music. Reaching the door at the end of the hall, I hesitated for a moment before pulling it open to reveal the crowds of people dancing around, having a good time.
“Here goes nothing,” I muttered before pushing my way through dancing bodies.
After finding a good spot, I stood around, waiting as I watched the door carefully, hoping Malia would come up at any minute along with the others. It was maybe about five minutes before she showed up, then Kira, and finally Scott. I jumped as I felt a hand grab onto my waist, pulling me close. I smiled nervously as a girl began dancing in front of me, holding onto my hips.
“Blend in, idiot,” I heard Malia whisper from behind as she moved through the crowd onto the other end of the room. Pressing my lips, I grinned toward the girl before placing my hands over her shoulders and moving my body along with hers.
The music finally stopped and she dropped her hold on me, allowing me to turn over to Scott, who appeared just behind me.
“Did they make it in?” I asked, nervous about Stiles and Lydia.
“They’re in with her right now,” Scott answered, referring to the Calaveras’s leader, Araya. My eyes widened as I saw one of the guards making his way toward us. I acted on my feet and quickly took hold of Scott by the shoulders, pulling him close.
“What are you doing?” he asked, his brows merging in confusion.
“Just dance!” I said, moving my body so that it seemed like we had been dancing together the entire time. Looking down, I noticed his hands hovering over my sides as if not wanting to touch me. Rolling my eyes, I lowered my hands down to his and placed them over my hips before moving back up to his shoulders. “Just go with it!” He made a face as he looked down to me, seeming awkward by the whole thing.
“Adelyn, I don’t think I’m okay—”
“Would you relax before you give us away?” I laughed. “It doesn’t mean anything. I know you like, Kira and I have Mark back home. Just dance with me, doof!” I looked over to one of the guards, nodding for Scott to notice. He looked back and finally understood my actions. Turning back, Scott took in a deep breath and nodded, his body relaxing a bit as he began to move his body along with mine.
“What about Stiles?” he asked, leaning toward my ear so that I could hear him.
“What about him?” I asked, my brows furrowing.
“Don’t you still like him? I mean, he’ll kill me if he sees this—”
“He’s with Malia and I’m with Mark,” I cut him off. “We’re just friends. Nothing more. I don’t like him like that anymore.”
“You still like him though,” he smirked. I pursed my lips, feeling my eyes glow as I felt the annoyance build up. “The music may be loud, but I still heard your heart beat skip at the comment. Either you’re lying to me, or lying to yourself.” I looked over his shoulder as I noticed more guards making their way out through the crowd.
“Something’s wrong,” I finally said, keeping my eyes on them. He turned back, keeping his hands at my hips.
“She’s not taking the deal,” he muttered.
“What do we do?” I asked as he turned back to face me.
“Then we cut back the money,” he answered as one of the guards took notice of us. I gasped as he dropped his hold on my hips and turned in time to knock the guard out cold with one swift punch. Scott took hold of the small black walkie-talkie the guard held onto as it went off.
“Norte (North)? A donde esta Norte (Where’s North)?” the voice continued to ask.
“Stiles, take ten off the table,” Scott spoke into the walkie-talkie.
“So, I guess that’s how it’s going to go,” I muttered, tilting my head to the side as I turned in time to see one of the younger guards making his way toward Malia and Kira, holding out his gun. Walking over to him, I grabbed a hold of his arm and turned him to face me.
“Hey! Wanna dance?” I grinned before taking his wrist and kneeing him in the stomach and flipping him forward with his own arm. He grunted and attempted to aim his weapon at me before I twisted his wrist and dropped it into my hold. Quickly and swiftly, I emptied the gun and threw it far from him before punching his nose and knocking him out. Kira and Malia both turned to face us as Scott nodded, indicating we were onto the next part of the plan.
~
We snuck our way into the dark red hallway, the one leading us to where the negotiation was taking place with Lydia and Stiles. I kept my place just behind Kira and Malia, turning behind every now and then just in case someone decided to sneak up on us. Scott suddenly held out a hand as we noticed white smoke coming out from one of the rooms. He continued to step forward, looking up and around for a moment before white smoke began to dispense from all around us, hitting Scott straight in the face.
“Wolf’s bane,” he gasped. “It’s wolf’s bane! Kira get out of here!” he cried out as he fell to his knees along with Malia. “Adelyn take her and get out of here!” I looked around, finding it hard to look through the clouds of smoke as I tried looking for Scott, not wanting to leave them behind. “Look out!” I gasped as a man suddenly made his way out with a gun. At my side, the angel blade manifested itself in attempt to defend myself but before I knew it, I was hit from behind, causing me to lose my balance and ultimately my consciousness.
~
I felt a pounding at my head and a pair of hands holding onto me as I began to slowly recover from the hit.
“Why are you holding her? She’s going to be fine, I can hear her heartbeat,” I heard Malia’s voice say.
“Yeah, but—” Stiles cut himself off as my eyes finally fluttered open. “Adelyn? Are you okay?” he finally asked as he helped me sit up.
“Yeah, fine,” I grunted, putting up my hand to my head. “Well, except for the raging headache, I’m fine. What about Kira and Scott?”
“I’m fine,” Kira answered, hovering over Scott, who I finally noticed laying just a few feet away from me. “We’re just waiting for him to—” Scott began to stir. “He’s awake! Guys, he’s awake!” Stiles helped me up before we headed straight for Scott.
“Scott, you okay?” Stiles asked, kneeling over along with Kira as they both helped him up to his feet.
“They don’t have him, they don’t have, Derek,” Scott quickly began in panic.
“We know, but right now they’ve got Lydia,” Kira muttered.
“Lydia?” he asked, panicking even more now. “What do they want with Lydia?”
“More importantly… where the hell are we?” I asked, squinting as I held up a hand to my head and looked around.
“Some type of basement lock up,” Kira answered. Scott pushed his way through to the entrance, placing his hands on the crack of the opening in attempt to pry it open. Malia leaned back against one of the pillars, hands behind her back, as Stiles quietly cheered Scott on with his gestures, but it was no use.
“What about Adelyn?” Malia sighed, turning to look at me. “Can you use your magic blast thing to blow up the door or something?” I made a face, not understanding.
“You know, like when you blew up the lock trying to save Stiles at Eichen House?”
“You did that?” Stiles asked, his brows furrowing as he turned to face me. “I thought Malia was the one who broke the lock—” I looked to him, pressing my lips together as I felt my heart beat quicken and my cheeks burn up. At my side, I felt Scott almost smirking as he cleared his throat softly.
“Can you do it again?” Malia asked eagerly, ignoring Stiles. I turned back to her, opening my mouth and shrugging.
“I—I don’t know.”
“Just try it,” she pushed on. Pressing my lips together again, I huffed a sigh as I turned my body to face the door.
“Fine,” I muttered, raising up my hand. My eyes began their silver glow and the metal from the door began to shake, denting slightly in places. It suddenly reached a point and I flew back, almost as if I had hit something.
“Whoa!” Stiles quickly grabbed onto me as I fell back into him.
“Mountain ash,” I grunted, picking myself back up from his arms. “They put mountain ash behind it.”
“Fine, then we go back to my original plan,” Malia continued, turning to look at all of us. “When that door opens again, we take out whoever is standing in the way and run for it.”
“What about Lydia?” Kira asked.
“What about her?” Malia’s brows furrowed.
“We’re not leaving without Lydia,” I quickly said, my own brows merging in slight irritation.
“We can’t leave without her,” Scott added.
“Why not?” Malia asked rather confused.
“Because we don’t leave without people, remember?” Stiles said, smiling as he made his way closer to her, scratching at his temple. “We talked about this. Rules of the wild kingdom don’t apply to friends.” He lightly knocked on the pillar behind her as she lowered her head. I made a face as I looked at the two of them and crossed my arms.
“Is that what you would do as a coyote?” Kira asked, causing Malia to look back up. “Leave her for dead?”
“If she was weak and injured, yeah,” Malia nodded. “If hunting had been bad that season, I would eat her.” I looked over to Stiles, almost as if asking if she was being serious, but I knew the answer. “Then I’d leave.”
“Mmm,” Stiles hummed, scratching at his chin for a second before shrugging. “Believe it or not, that’s progress.” I simply rolled my eyes and threw my hands down to my side as I turned to Scott, hoping he’d have some sort of idea.
“Really?” I asked, motioning toward both Stiles and Malia, my eyes widening slightly as I stared at the alpha.
“I know, I know. But we’re not dead yet. That means Araya wants something,” Scott began.
“But if the Calaveras don’t know where Derek is, that means they didn’t take him from the loft, right?” Kira asked, facing Scott.
“Maybe he left on his own?” Stiles asked.
“Why would he would leave on his own and somehow end up in between life or death on Lydia’s radar?” I asked, looking to him.
“Maybe someone else got to him?” Scott asked.
“Like who?” I asked, my brows merging slightly further.
In that moment, the door flung open and in came three of Araya’s hunters, one of the bigger ones holding out a stun gun meant for Scott. I attempted to step forward as he fell down, but was immediately stopped as one of the other hunters stepped before me. Kira cried out in pain as the third and final one grabbed a hold of her and dragged her out along with Scott. I ran after, but slammed against the door as they it shut behind them.
“What are we going to do?!” I panicked as I turned to face the remaining of the group, keeping my hands to the door.
“I—I don’t know,” Stiles stammered. Malia made her way over to the sinks and sat herself down in frustration. Pulling away, I made my way closer to the couple.
“Okay, how about this? We take them out, just like Malia suggested and try to find everybody else?” I began, staring at the both of them.
“One problem. We don’t know where they are,” Stiles sighed out heavily.
“Well, one of us has supersonic hearing,” I muttered, crossing my arms as I looked down to Malia. Stiles caught on and began pacing around.
“But I don’t know if she’s gotten the hang of it. I mean, Scott has been teaching her this whole time but—”
“It’s worth a shot,” I shrugged.
“I’ll try,” Malia added, looking up at Stiles. We both watched as she shut her eyes and concentrated for a minute or two. Stiles became impatient as he began pacing around the room.
“Can you hear them? Can you hear Scott?” he finally blurted out as he turned to her. She opened her eyes and shook her head, seeming distressed herself. Malia took in a deep breath before closing her eyes again.
“Okay, can you hear Kira? Lydia? Anybody? What—what are they saying?” Stiles pressed on. She shook her head and looked up to him, her discomfort clearly showing.
“I—I can’t,” she began. “I can’t concentrate. I—I—there’s too many sounds and… voices.”
“Okay, it’s okay, it’s okay,” he quickly knelt before her and placed his hands over her arms. “Look, just breathe. Breathe with me, alright?” Malia took in short breaths, staring up at Stiles as he tried to assure her of her abilities. “You practiced this with Scott before, remember that?”
“I’m trying,” she panted. I narrowed my eyes down to the floor as I took in their closeness and was reminded of that day back at Eichen House.
“It’s okay! It’s okay. Just try to focus on something. Here, look at my eyes,” he suggested, motioning toward his face. “Or do—just focus on the sound of my voice, anything you have to do. Just try to concentrate. Concentrate—” He was instantly cut off as Malia pressed her lips to his, causing me to immediately turn away, feeling my eyes twinge a bit. Even though they had been together for a while now, it still bothered me, but as always, I’d have to bite my tongue and look away. I suddenly gasped as the lights began to flicker, causing me to turn back to the couple.
“What’s happening?” I asked in slight panic.
“They’re killing him,” Malia breathed out, her features twisting into concern.
“With what? What else is going on?” Stiles pressed on, seeming eager to know answers.
“Uh Araya, she’s—she’s trying to get Scott to say something, admit to who has Derek,” she began, stammering. Looking back, I noticed her glowing blue eyes as she stared up at the ceiling.
“But—but there’s no way he could know that,” I stammered, looking back down to Malia.
“Shut up,” she grumbled as her eyes returned back to their normal color and her brows furrowing. “He just said a name…”
“What? What name?” Stiles asked rather eagerly.
“He said… Kate. Kate has Derek,” Malia continued.
“No that’s impossible,” Stiles said, shaking his head in disbelief. “It’s impossible. That can’t be what he said.”
“Why?” she asked, confused. “Who—who’s Kate?”
“She’s a hunter. An Argent,” Stiles sighed.
“Allison’s aunt,” I whispered, my eyes widening slightly. There was a moment of silence before the doors slid open and in came more hunters. Each of them grabbed us by the arm and pulled us out.
“Where are you taking us?” I asked, glaring at the one that held onto me. He only chuckled and pushed me on further, not bothering to answer my question.
We all stumbled out of the building and into the town square as they almost threw us out. I squinted as the sun light hit me for the first time in a while.
“Wait, you’re just letting us go?” Stiles asked, confused as he turned to face them. The hunters only looked to each other before they tossed some keys his direction and slammed the door shut.
“What about the others?” I asked, my brows merging.
“They let us go too,” Lydia sighed out, finally walking out from another entrance. “Go get the Jeep, Stiles.” He nodded and held his keys tighter before running off to bring his baby.
~
We all stood at the side of the Jeep, waiting for Scott to finish his conversation with Araya. By the looks of it, it wasn’t just a casual conversation before she walked off and allowed him to walk toward us. Stiles took the chance and took a couple step ahead.
“So, what now?” he asked, stuffing his hands into his pocket. I followed behind with my arms crossed.
“Does she know where Derek is?” I asked.
“She thinks she knows where we can find him,” Scott answered.
“Is she going to tell us where?” Malia asked from behind.
“Actually, she’s giving us a guide,” Scott muttered, seeming slightly confused himself.
“A guide?” I asked before the rumbling of a bike was heard. We all turned in time to see a Harley Davis making its way into the town square and ultimately coming to a stop before us.
“Do you know her?” Stiles asked, hitting Scott in the chest before pointing to the girl that finally took off her helmet.
“Braeden,” Scott simply muttered.
“Who’s Braeden?” Kira asked.
“She’s a mercenary,” Lydia answered.
“And right now, I’m the only one who’s going to take you to La Iglesia,” she finally spoke up with a smirk.
“The church?” Lydia asked.
“Are you trying to imply we need to go to church? Because I don’t think Jesus will be much help finding Derek right now,” I said, making a face. Stiles let out a soft snort at my side as he stuffed his hands back into his pockets and looked down, attempting to hide his half-smile.
“No, it’s not a place where you’ll find God,” Braeden muttered, giving me an annoyed sort of look. “Just shut up and follow me.” With that she placed her helmet back on and revved the engine to her bike as we all made our way back into Stiles’ Jeep.
On the ride there, I shifted around uncomfortably with the limited amount of space there was between the girls in the back seat. We rode in silence as Stiles followed close behind Braeden. Malia finally gave in and leaned herself forward, crossing her arms before facing Scott.
“Okay, I’ll ask,” she sighed out. “Who’s Kate Argent?” Kira shifted around and raised her hand slightly.
“Uh, I’d like to know too,” she muttered.
“Well, we were at her funeral, so I’d like to know how she got out of a casket that was buried six feet underground,” Stiles commented.
“She was never in it,” Scott sighed.
“She was Allison’s aunt,” Lydia began. “And a total sociopath.”
“Personally, I never met her nor was I around for the situation, but from what I heard she did some pretty horrible things,” I muttered.
“Try gruesome,” Stiles said, keeping his eyes forward. The silence began again before Kira spoke up.
“You don’t have to talk about it now if you don’t want to,” she said, keeping her eyes on the back of Scott’s head.
“Um, yes he does!” Malia argued.
“She’s right,” Scott sighed. “You guys should know. You need to know.” He paused for a moment before somebody spoke up again.
“Alright, Kate was the one who set the fire that killed most of Derek’s family,” Stiles began. I lowered my gaze as I felt my eyes flash their silver color as vivid images began to surface and play through like a sort of movie to their story. The burning of a house, the loud, agonizing screams of pain and torture that came with it…
“Some of them survived, like Cora and Peter,” Scott continued.
“A very angry, Peter,” Lydia added.
“Yeah, he’s the one who bit and turned me,” Scott almost chuckled.
“And the one who finally caught up to her,” I muttered, keeping my eyes lowered as I saw Peter standing behind what I assumed to be Allison’s aunt, his claws at her throat.
“And he killed her,” Lydia finished off.
“Yeah, but we saw her buried,” Stiles said, gripping at his steering wheel a little tighter.
“No, we saw a casket, remember?” Scott added. “She wasn’t in it.”
He paused.
“The Calaveras heard that Kate had been killed by an alphas claws. They wanted to make sure that she was really dead. But her body was healing. More and more as she got closer to the full moon.”
“She was coming back,” Stiles said, taking in the story.
“So, they switched out the bodies. They took her. If a hunter’s bit, they have to take their own life before they change. The Calaveras, they treat the code like law. They make it their responsibility to enforce it,” Scott finished off.
“Good for her,” Malia said, keeping her body forward. “I wouldn’t do it either.”
“Would you kill half a dozen people to get out?” Scott asked almost bitterly, keeping his gaze forward. “Because that’s what she did.”
“So, Kate’s a werewolf now?” Kira asked, leaning slightly toward Scott.
“I don’t know,” he answered. “There’s a saying. Sometimes the shape you take reflects the person you are.”
“What kind of shape does a sociopathic bitch—?” Lydia was cut off by the sudden crash of the Jeep. Stiles immediately stepped on the brakes and caused Braeden to stop and turn back. We all quickly jumped out and looked around for any signs of Stiles having hit something, but there was nothing in sight. Braeden pulled over and made her way toward us.
“What happened?” she asked.
“I don’t know, it sounded like we hit something,” Stiles answered, seeming confused.
“Scott, we need to get there by night,” Braeden continued. “It’s too dangerous otherwise.” I stared up at the two best friends as they looked to each other in silence, not knowing what to do.
“Go,” Stiles finally spoke up, motioning for him to leave.
“Not without you,” Scott said, his brows merging.
“Dude, someone needs to find Derek,” Stiles continued, stepping forward and assuring his best friend. “We’ll think of something. We always do. Just go.” He patted his arm and pushed him forward as he made his way back to his Jeep, attempting to lift the hood. Stiles quickly got to work and I pushed my sleeves up, quickly making my way into his Jeep and pulling out his toolbox.
“Stiles!” Malia called out from the side of the Jeep. She grunted and clanging was heard before she pulled something out from behind his tire. “I don’t think we hit something…” We all turned to look at her as she pulled out some sort of boned weapon. My brows merged together as I took in the familiarity of it. Where had I seen that sort of weapon before?
“I think something hit us,” Malia breathed out before Stiles took it up in hand, examining it closely.
“Okay, well whatever the case, we need to get moving so we can catch up to Scott,” I said, putting the toolbox down on top of the Jeep and opening it up.
Stiles jumped over the hood, taking up some tools and getting to work. I attempted to help, but he quickly slapped my hand away.
“I’m trying to help!” I shot back, my brows furrowing.
“Nobody touches her, but me,” he said rather defensively. I sighed heavily and dropped my hands to the side, rolling my eyes. The other girls stood around outside, just keeping watch, while I kept an eye on what he was doing. Lydia crossed her arms and leaned up against the side of the Jeep.
“Maybe we should just walk,” she suggested.
“Hey! I will never abandon this Jeep!” he argued. “You understand me? Ever!” I made a face as he continued to twist and turn on bolts. “Ever!” he mumbled again through the wrench pressed up to his mouth.
“Work faster, Stiles,” Malia suddenly advised. He suddenly stopped and turned to look at her as she stared out at the desert. “There is something out here with us.” We all looked to each other, the panic clearly etched on our faces.
~
The sun began to set faster and soon enough we had to bring out the flashlights. I stood by Lydia, watching as Stiles continued to do whatever it was that he was doing, fighting back the urge to help.
“Lydia, can you please just hold the flashlight still for a second? It’s really hard to see anything when you keep shaking it like that,” Stiles said rather irritated.
“I’m shaking it like this because we’re in the middle of nowhere with your broken-down Jeep and we’re being attacked by yet ANOTHER razor clawed monster!” Lydia shot back, letting out a sigh. “And I’m terrified…”
“Well, just be slightly less terrified!” Stiles suggested.
“As if it’s that easy,” I muttered, keeping my eyes on his hands, suddenly cringing as he pulled at something.
“Adelyn, hold this!” My eyes widened as he held out something that looked a lot like the alternator to the engine.
“What is that?” Lydia asked.
“I don’t know. I’m hoping it’s not important,” he said rather casually.
“That’s it!” I cried out, throwing my hands up and stepping up onto the hood, picking up some tools of my own. “I’m helping you whether you like it or not!”
“You know how to work on cars?” Lydia asked, her brows merging.
“As a matter of fact, I do! It’s what I would do as a past time while I was home schooled and my dad had free time. Stiles, move over,” I muttered, placing the part back in its place and attempting to screw it back on. Stiles kept his wide eyes on me, mouth slightly gapped as I snatched the wrench out of his hand and continued my work. Just a few feet before us, Kira and Malia continued to keep watch. They talked amongst each other before Kira made her way toward the headlights, using her sword to aim the light toward the mountains.
“Did you see that?” Kira gasped, aiming the light toward a moving shadow. We all stopped and turned to look. Malia, however, did not hesitate before growling and running off.
“Malia, wait!” Kira cried out, running after her.
“Hey, Malia!” Stiles freaked out, dropping his other tools and attempting to jump off.
“Kira go!” Lydia urged. “YOU!” She pointed he flashlight to Stiles, causing him to stop. “You stay and help Adelyn fix the Jeep!” He attempted to move forward again, but she cried out. “STILES! Focus!” He groaned and grudgingly got back to work as I handed him his tool with one hand and continuing to work with the other.
“Here, twist that part,” I muttered, careful not to upset him, knowing he was probably panicking about Malia. “There you go.” Another twist and I pulled back.
“Okay, now for the jump start. Stiles, go behind the wheel,” I continued, finally jumping off the hood and standing before the headlights. He attempted to turn the Jeep on, but it wouldn’t budge.
“Hang on!” I called out, holding my arms out to the battery, feeling my eyes begin their glow and the electricity form at the palm of my hands. Quickly touching down, I pulled back as it was enough juice to start it back up. Stiles cheered as he revved the engine.
“Alright, let’s go get Malia!” Stiles said, eagerly behind the wheel. I turned around, watching as Kira and Malia rushed their way back toward the Jeep.
“There’s no need to, they’re back,” I breathed out, my brows furrowing as I noticed the deep cut on the side of Malia’s body. We all quickly jumped in and Stiles began to speed up.
“You!” he began pointing at Malia, his tone high and upset, much like any parent. “You, please, don’t EVER do that ever again!”
“Do what?!” she asked, raising her own tone of voice.
“I—I thought you just took off. I thought you were running,” Stiles continued.
“I WAS running,” she answered.
“No, I mean—” he sighed. “Like I thought you were leaving.”
“I wouldn’t leave without you,” she said, turning to face him. I grimaced and looked down, feeling my stomach tie up in knots. At my side, I felt Lydia place a hand over mine and give it a light squeeze. She knew it was still hard for me to see Stiles be with her.
“Really?” he asked.
“No. I’d never leave without you,” she smiled slightly. Lydia shifted uncomfortably as Malia turned back to face all of us. “Them I would leave.” She pursed her lips and slightly glared at Malia, squeezing my hand a little tighter.
“Uh—yeah, it’s progress,” Stiles said, turning to us briefly.
“That doesn’t look so good,” Lydia commented, looking down at Malia’s wound. She turned to face her and nodded.
“It’s okay.”
“Are you sure?” Kira asked. “It looks deep.”
“Yeah, I can feel it healing,” Malia muttered, turning forward and leaning back in her seat.
“You didn’t see anything?” Lydia asked, attempting to keep the attention away from me for a while in the mean time I recovered from my feelings.
“Barely,” Malia answered, keeping her eyes forward and shaking her head. “It had a strong scent though.”
“Like what?” Stiles asked.
“Like death,” she sighed.
~
The rest of the ride there was left in silence before we finally managed to reach the town and location Derek was said to be in. Stiles pulled over and allowed everyone to get out in time to see Braeden and Scott walking out, holding onto someone. Both Stiles and I ran up to Scott, quickly halting as we took in the sight before us. My brows merged together as I looked down at the person they held onto.
“Is that him?” Malia suddenly asked, appearing next to Stiles. “Is that Derek?”
“Uh, sort of?” Stiles answered rather uncomfortably. I pressed my lips together as I watched the young teenager lift his head up.
“What the hell did she do to him?” I asked, making a face. And more importantly, how the hell did she do it?
Chapter 1 / Chapter 2
(A/N: As you guys can tell, I have decided to give Adelyn a little distraction! But Clearly her and Stiles still have a little something going on. Will they act on it this season? 🤔 Only one way to find out. Anyways I gave it a shot to try and make a little collage of the couples involved in this love square LOL hope you guys enjoyed and sorry if I missed any sort of mistakes. Hopefully I’ll get to post the next part sometime soon!)

“To protect Humanity, some humans must be sacrificed. To ensure your freedom, some freedoms must be surrendered. We robots will ensure mankind’s continued existence. You are so like children. We must save you from yourselves.” — VIKI, in I, Robot MADISON, Wis. — It all started one midnight when George and Alice were seated at the breakfast bar, watching a “Jeopardy” re-run on the ultra-HD screen embedded on the door of the refrigerator. George, who was having a late-night ice cream snack, was mildly irritated for two reasons. First, he would have preferred to watch TV in his den, where the chair was more comfy. But, to humor Alice, who was testing the fridge, he was balancing on a kitchen stool. More annoying was that Alice wasn’t, as usual, nagging him about eating after 9 p.m. and getting fat. The fridge had taken over the job, calling him “Lardbutt” as he was removing the ice cream from the freezer. “You’re lucky,” said Alice. “The algorithm allows the fridge to actually slam the freezer door on your hand.” George didn’t feel lucky. Nor had he felt lucky the night before, when he reached for the last wedge of peach cobbler from the middle shelf. As he touched the plate, he felt an electric shock. Alice had explained, “It’s an electrified magnetic grid. It recognizes sweets and protects them.” “From what?” asked George. Betty Furness “You,” replied Alice. “It has your complete food profile, going back to your first Popsicle when you were eight months old. Alice was a technology analyst. She’d been chosen as a beta test subject for the Cyberdine Systems Omni-Sci Robo-Cool refrigerator, billed by its maker as the “Pinnacle of IoT.” She and George were in their first week. “What the hell is IoT?” asked George. “For the dozenth time, it’s the Internet of things,” replied Alice. “It empowers devices, anticipating the habits and needs of consumers, to communicate among one another, thus seamlessly expediting delivery of services and goods.” George kept eating his ice cream. Alice gushed on. “This simple-seeming refrigerator is loaded with sensors — motion, light and body-heat sensors, plus radars, lidars, a cute little seismograph and cameras. George! There’s a tiny camera, mounted on a 240-degree swivel on each shelf, two more in the freezer, one each in the meat drawer, cheese pantry, veggie drawer and fruit basin. Its freshness sensors measure both the original status of a refrigerated victual and its state of decay and/or putrefaction.” “Wait. You mean we have putrefying food in there?” said George. “Not with this baby in charge!” Alice boasted. “That’s why Cyberdine perfected the Desic-Arrest Leftover Alert. If the DALA detects so much as a single microscopic mold spore, it sets off a piercing—” “I know, I know,” said George. “I think I broke an ear drum yesterday.” “See? That’s why we’re doing a test. I’ll tell Cyberdine to lower the volume.” “Alice, this is an awful lot of complicated gear. Isn’t that expensive?” “George, that’s not relevant. Once these beauties go into volume production, one unit won’t cost any more than your run-of-the-mill SUV.” George reeled, struggling to stay on his stool. “Besides,” Alice enthused, rushing to the Omni-Sci Robo-Cool, “look at this.” Using fingerprint and retina scans, Alice opened the fridge, revealing a holographic head-up display, whose screensaver depicted Betty Furness in a cocktail dress holding a carton of tomato juice in front of a classic Westinghouse icebox. Alice tapped the display, unfurling a vivid list of every item inside, its source (Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, etc.) its purchase and expiration dates. She tapped one item, a cantaloupe, and learned its weight, its provenance (Fresno), its ripeness state (88.9%), its “freshness quotient,” its calorie count both in total and per four-ounce serving, and 26 other measurements. It even suggested when it should be served and how many bites pudgy George should be permitted to eat. Hesitantly, George asked, “How does it—” “Satellite,” said Alice., anticipating George’s question. “Cyberdine has teamed with Elon Musk to launch fourteen dedicated satellites, capable of monitoring every fridge on every continent 24/7. It’s everywhere, George.” George fell off the stool. “For example,” said Alice, helping George up, “you go over to the Safeway to shop for dinner. The fridge knows what we’re planning, every ingredient.” “You have to explain to the fridge what we’re going to eat?” “No,” said Alice, “it knows. I just have to say, for instance, ‘goulash.’ The fridge’s database scans our entire culinary history, dating back to your grandmother’s meat loaf. It remembers every ingredient for our favorite goulash and uploads the grocery list into your mobile phone.” Alice went on. “So, there you are at Safeway. And, poor forgetful man, you walk right past the spice section. This triggers an alert to your phone and sets off a klaxon loud enough to be heard at the nearest fire station. To make it stop, you tap the phone and access the Omni-Sci Robo-Cool app. You see the words “Ground Fennel Seed” flashing, you grab the item and you scan its bar code. Voila!” “Alice, can’t I just take a piece of paper with a grocery list?” Alice laughed indulgently. “Oh, George! My lovable Luddite!” George continued looking puzzled. So, Alice elaborated. “The purpose of IoT, George, is that everything in your life, from waking up to your smart-alarm in your your interactive pajamas, to your smart toaster and coffeemaker, your smartcup and intuitive orange juice, to going to sleep in your temperature-controlled, smart-dark smart-bedroom in your comfort-sensor smartbed equipped with a smartpillow, smart-blankets and even a drawer full of smart condoms in case I feel frisky…George, it’s all just one big robotic gestalt built to foresee and respond to your every need. You never have to ask. You never lift a finger. It’s paradise.” “Parsdise?” said George. “What if I want to lift a finger?” “Oh, George!” George went on. “Alice, it’s all machines — machines I never asked for.” “Silly man,” said Alice. “This is called technology push. Consumer demand is so old-school, George. Tech companies need to stay solvent, every quarter, every frigging year. They can’t wait for slugs like you to say, oh wouldn’t it be nice if I had an interactive this or a robotic that. They have to keep making this stuff up, spend a fortune on R&D, rush their latest ‘innovation’ to market before it’s been debugged, and shove it, George, right down your throat.” “So, IoT,” said George. “Invasion of Throat.” “You’re catching on, George,” Alice replied. “I’m going to bed.” George pretended to watch TV ’til Alice was asleep. He remembered that there was a slice of chocolate custard pie right behind the mayonnaise. George tiptoed to the Omni-Sci Robo-Cool, did the fingerprint/retina routine and opened the door. He saw the pie. but before daring to reach in, he found the electric cord. George yanked out the fridge’s plug. It went dark. George reached for his pie. But as he did, the fridge activated its auxiliary self-preservation power pack, which George didn’t know about. A bright red laser dot suddenly shone on George’s non-smart pajamas, right over his heart. The last thing George heard on earth was a cool voice that spoke with an air of omniscience. “Hasta la vista, baby.” Reality Bites: The Satan Strain in the Streets Reality Bites: Down Memory Lane with Voter Suppression Newton Minow’s ‘Vast Wasteland’ in the 21st Century This Is a ‘Trade Pub.’ What Does That Mean? The Trump administration took its war with the media to the next level this week when federal authorities seized years of phone records from New York Times reporter Ali Watkins as part of a federal investigation into leaks of classified information.
Watkins, who previously worked for BuzzFeed News and Politico, had a three-year relationship with James Wolfe, a former Senate Intelligence Committee aide who was arrested on Thursday and charged with lying to federal agents investigating the classified leaks.
The seizure set off alarm bells about the relationship between the administration and the media. The Department of Justice under Obama took phone records from Associated Press reporters and editors, named a Fox News reporter an unindicted “co-conspirator” in a leak case, and prosecuted multiple cases involving whistleblowers and leakers. So is what Trump doing more of the same? Or is a president who routinely bashes the media and threatens to jail leakers finally turning his rhetoric into reality?
“It’s deeply alarming that the Trump administration has decided to build off of the worst of the Obama legacy on leak investigations and reporter-source protection,” said Alexandra Ellerbeck, the North America program coordinator for the Committee to Protect Journalists.
I asked Ellerbeck and five other experts what they make of the Justice Department’s latest actions and how they compare to what the Obama administration did. The general response: What Obama did was bad, and what Trump is doing is likely worse.
Their responses, edited for clarity and style, are below.
David Schulz, senior counsel, Ballard Spahr LLP, and director of the Media Freedom and Information Access Clinic at Yale Law School
The government’s secret collection of a reporter’s telephone and email records to locate a confidential source is a matter of grave concern. Alarms went off when the Obama administration seized the phone records of several AP bureaus in 2013, and alarms are going off today. A free and independent press able to reveal the truth about the actions of government is crucial in a democracy, and a reporter’s ability to promise confidentiality is essential to getting the truth. It is a matter of human nature and simple logic.
The constitutional implications of governmental interference in the relationship between reporters and their sources have been recognized at least since President Nixon sat in the Oval Office nearly 50 years ago. Since then, Department of Justice guidelines have required government agents to exhaust alternative sources before seeking to compel information from the press, to minimize the scope of information requested from a reporter, and to notify the press in most circumstances so they can seek appropriate protection from a court before the government takes its records. Apparently, none of this happened here.
The department’s actions revealed yesterday cry out for a full and immediate public accounting, as provided by Attorney General [Eric] Holder in the aftermath of the AP incident. In particular, why were so many years of records taken? Department of Justice regulations require that, in all cases and without exception, a subpoena for a reporter’s telephone records must be “as narrowly drawn as possible.”
And why was no advance notice given to the reporter, so that a judge — and not a prosecutor alone — could decide whether the seizure would violate the constitutional protection of the press? Under current rules, such a step can only properly be taken if prior notice would “pose a substantial threat to the integrity” of an investigation, a claim that cannot credibly be made in this case where the source was already aware of the existence of the investigation.
The concerns raised by this secret governmental seizure are not just that it has happened, but also with what will happen next. The years’ worth of records likely reference communications with a number of sources on a wide range of stories — information the government has no conceivable right to know.
Who will have access to this information, and what will be done with it? Will it be reviewed only on a need-to-know basis by those working on this investigation, or made available more broadly to search for other leakers? Will records of communications by government staff be kept in personnel files and contacts with reporters taken into account in employment evaluations? The potential for misuse of the information is staggering and only compounds the need for an immediate accounting by the Department of Justice.
Julian Sanchez, senior fellow, the Cato Institute
I don’t think it can be argued that the DOJ is breaking fundamentally new ground here, in light of the subpoenas for phone records directed at the Associated Press and the monitoring of James Rosen during the Obama administration.
The scope of the information-gathering on Watkins seems quite extraordinary, however, encompassing both telephone and email records reportedly stretching back, not for a few months, which is what we’ve previously seen in leak investigations focused on the origins of specific news stories, but spanning several years. That strikes me as significant because it means they’re not just getting a snapshot of what a reporter was working on at one particular moment, which is fraught enough, but in effect a detailed map of the source network she’s built up over the whole of her career.
Alexandra Ellerbeck, North America program coordinator, the Committee to Protect Journalists
This is the first instance, that we know of, in which the Trump administration has gone after a journalist’s communications records. There is nothing more vital to a functioning press than the ability of journalists to protect their sources, so the seizure of a journalist’s communications records sets a dangerous precedent.
The past decade has seen repeated federal assaults on the ability of journalists to protect their sources. Under the Obama administration, the Justice Department came under fire for subpoenaing outgoing call records from 20 phone lines belonging to AP reporters or editors. The Obama administration also set the record for leak-related prosecutions. After the public outcry, the administration did make some modest positive steps. New leak prosecutions quieted down and the administration revised internal guidelines to make it harder to obtain journalist records.
It’s deeply alarming that the Trump administration has decided to build off of the worst of the Obama legacy on leak investigations and reporter source protection. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has called for putting leakers in jail, and President Trump allegedly even floated the idea of putting journalists themselves in jail. Last fall, Sessions expressed a desire to roll back some of the protections put in place at the end of Obama’s term. So far, however, they are still in place. We urgently need an explanation of how the troubling actions taken by the DOJ adhere to the guidelines they have set out for themselves.
Jonathan Turley, law professor, George Washington University
The case raises a troubling pattern of surveillance targeting journalists. The Obama administration’s targeting of Rosen was far more serious, however.
In this case, the journalist had an alleged intimate relationship with the target who was sharing highly classified information. That type of “pillow talk” risk is one of the primary dangers facing the government over the release of information. Indeed, it is a common tactic by foreign powers. The alleged use of such intimate relationships by a journalist raises serious journalistic ethical concerns.
Nevertheless, the targeting of a journalist should be the last, not first, response. It is not clear if this was necessary since the targets emails and phone records were available. Moreover, recording [Rosen’s] conversations would inevitably include some calls with the journalist. Thus, it is not clear why the government would need to target the reporter or her communications.
While the Supreme Court has sharply curtailed the constitutional protections afforded to journalists and has left them with the same basic protections afforded average citizens, there remains a longstanding policy against such intrusive measures. There is ample reason to be concerned about such cases and legitimate questions that should be answered by the Justice Department. Unfortunately, the Congress has never been a strong advocate of journalistic protections (as opposed to the states which passed shield laws protecting reporters).
Michael Meltsner, law professor, Northeastern University, and author of With Passion: An Activist Lawyer’s Life
Neither the Obama administration then or the Trump administration now has avoided intruding into the important newsgathering role of the press, but it’s a big mistake to equate the two. Attacking the press is pervasive with Trump. Obama practices were situational.
Trump is playing his “nobody can criticize me” card. Wrong as his judgment may have been, Obama was motivated by a view of a government need for confidentiality.
Steven Aftergood, director of the Federation of American Scientists’ project on government secrecy
There are at least two factors that highlight the egregious nature of this move.
First, even though reporter Ali Watkins is not accused or suspected of any criminal activity, her professional life has been unilaterally compromised by the administration. This is unjust and inappropriate on its face.
Second, the work of a reporter is different than that of a farmer or an auto mechanic in a crucial respect. The operation of a free press is a structural element of our political way of life. By interfering in the reporting process in the way that it did, and outside of any judicial procedure that might have allowed the reporters to challenge the action, the administration is undermining the freedom of the press on which we all depend.
Regrettably, this is not altogether unprecedented. The Obama administration took some similar steps in seizing Associated Press phone records in 2013. But the Obama Justice Department seemed chastened by the criticism it received and issued new guidance to moderate and regulate any such moves in the future. The Trump administration appears to have exceeded or ignored that guidance.

Oh crap, what am I going to do? Car insurance?
"Oh crap, what am I going to do? Car insurance?
This might be long but PLEASE READ EVERYTHING. When I was 15 my grandfather (Legally my father, always lived with him) had always promised me he would get me driver's ed but he never did. A few months before I was 18 I moved out and in an apartment with my fiance. My fiance went to college 5 hours away the day after my 18th. After I turned 18 (July 25) I wanted to get my license, and I know how to do it. My fiance came back from college last weekend and took me to buy a used car for 400. Its a beater, but it drives. It has no insurance and no license plates. Im caught in a super circle. I cant get to SOS or DMV to even apply for my permit without 1) a ride and 2) insurance. I cant get plates to even drive it illegally without a license. I cant get insurance because, from what Im figuring out, just about no body will insure someone without a license. My grandfather will -not- put me on his insurance to save our lives and I need a car to get back and forth to work. (Walking 5 miles? Nah...) What am I supposed to do???? I cant pay a whole lot for insurance as Im now living alone in an apartment on a crappy salary. I had a decent salary until my work decided to super hire and how we are severely over staffed... What to do!?

Going on my grandmothers car mobility insurance?
Hello, I'm 17 soon, male and living in the United Kingdom. If I was to buy a car and take out insurance, the prices would go through the roof and we don't have that much of a budget to spend. Why would an insurance company deny me coverage for not having central air and heating?
We wanted to switch from the local company we had been insuring our house with because their correspondance has always been very rude and they are very difficult to deal with to USAA who we do all of our banking, brokerage, car & boat insurance through and are very courteous and extremely easy to deal with. We were denied coverage because our home does not have central air or heating. We live in South Central Florida so a heating system would be an absolute waste of money (the wall unit in the Great Room and a space heater in the bedroom are more than sufficient to make the house hospitable in the few welcome days of winter cold enough to warrant their use). My wife and I both cannot stand Air Conditioning and would never use Central A/C other than the one or two times a year we would normally turn on our wall unit when it is too hot to bear and the windows and doors cannot be left open. Houses have existed for Milleniums prior to the invention of Central Climate Control and I am sure home insurance existed atleast a few decades before the invention of air conditioning. Why would not having central climate control be a disqualifying factor in getting home insurance coverage? I highly doubt that not having A/C or heat is going to make our house any more likely to be damaged or destroyed in a hurricane, robbed or flooded. Opening the windows and doors instead of having a HVAC system consistantly running in our house makes us less suseptable to fire.""

Wouldn't it be more fair to have car insurance companies hold your money in case of an accident, then you get your money back if you don't get in an accident by the time you switch companies or are too old to drive? It seems like good drivers are paying for the damage done by bad drivers.""
Any one know anything about the new medical insurances?
Please tell me that my co-payments will be less! I pay $15 for my primary care physician, $25 to see a specialist, that my primary care physician sends me to, from time to time, and $25 for lab blood tests. Most of my medicine co-payments are reasonable. Except two: $60 each every 30 days. Ouch. I am 60 and working full-time.""

Car Insurance HELP ?!?!?
A couple weeks ago I was involved in an accident which was not my fault. The claim adjuster figured that it would cost 10k to fix my 03' VW Passat. The insurance ended up totaling the car because it cost more to fix it then it was worth. I was not finish making payments on the car. I was wondering if it's true that the insurance company will give me money to purcahse a new car even the last car was not finished in payments.
Oh crap, what am I going to do? Car insurance?
Insurance wants to total my car?
So recently an 18 wheeler ran into the back of my car damaging the whole trunk and the force of the truck pushed my car into a post scraping the side of my car. The insurance guy came and just got a call back saying that they want to total my car and pay for it. The car is a black 2002 jetta 1.8 turbo from a small local dealer and has 140,000 miles. Im currently still paying it off and the car cost me $6000. Here is my concern, they haven't told me how much they plan to give me for my jetta but i went on craigslist and the average cost for a 2002 jetta 1.8t is around what i paid from $5000-$6000, will the insurance give me that amount because bluebook says my car is worth at most around $3400 in excelent condition and at retail value according to bluebook is around $4500. All I'm concern with is either my car is restore to the point before the accident or if they get me enough money to buy a new jetta of equal or greater quality. Restoring my car car i guess is not and option which I'm ok with but what if the amount they give me is not enough to go buy a new jetta from a small local dealer will they give me more money or how does this whole process work because I've never been in this situation.""

Individual dental insurance for braces?
What is a good individual dental insurance if I were to get braces? I have done some research and nailed it down to DeltaCare and Pacificare. So which dental insurance is better, or any other suggestions? Pacificare cost slightly less than DeltaCare as far as co-payments go. Both are HMO plans, all the PPO plans covers little to nothing for braces, so HMO seems to be the only way to go for an individual plan. DeltaCare seems to be more reliable since it's associated with Delta Dental, a little more costly also. I'm more concerned about the quality of the services as far as making claims and such.
