We as a fandom don't talk enough about how Annabeth and Luke being some of the oldest campers means that everyone who was there when they arrived is likely dead.

I feel like Hades/Pluto only falls in love rarely, so even before the oath he always had less demigod children than the others (and even now that the oath is gone he won't have any more for a good long while) but when he does, he loves deeply.
Hades stayed with Maria long enough to have two kids with her, and he didn't leave in between like Zeus did with Beryl after Thalia was born. I read somewhere that he stayed with the di Angelos until Nico was a toddler; I don't remember if it's canon or not but if it is I think it fits. I assume he helped them get to America because travel overseas, especially to an enemy country, was, well, difficult to put it mildly (especially considering Bianca and Nico presumably couldn't go by either sky or sea). He personally warned Maria, and from the sound of it that was not the first time they were having a similar conversation. He offered to shelter her and their children in the Underworld, to build her an entire palace. He was so devastated by her death that he cursed the Oracle. More than fifty years later he was still grieving her so much that he sent armies of monsters to get Thalia in revenge for Zeus killing Maria. He had Bianca and Nico dipped in the Lethe, sent to the Lotus Hotel, sent Alecto to get them out of the hotel, got them into school with presumably all the Mist and paperwork forgery that entailed (although then left them to their own devices, instead of sending them to camp or something). Any other god would have stopped caring so much about their welfare once they were in the Lotus Hotel, and possibly before that.
As for Pluto, Hazel never met him until she was thirteen, but it seems that Marie didn't want him around anyway (in fairness, she might not have wanted him around BECAUSE he'd left her and Hazel, I don't know which came first). But when Hazel was born he was "so pleased and proud" that he offered Marie literally any wish it was within his power to grant, and even though he knew what she asked for would only bring trouble he gave it to her anyway. He had apparently had the Levesques under his protection all this time, which I think is why Hazel never mentions ever seeing a monster during her childhood, even though you'd think a child of one of the Big Three would be a major target. He personally came to ask Marie not to go to Alaska, instead of sending a minion, but did not force her not to go. He gave Hazel a birthday present of pencils and drawing paper - which means he already knew she liked drawing, so he'd clearly been keeping an eye on her. He intentionally turns a blind eye to Hazel's resurrection, despite it literally going against his entire domain and everything he stands for as the Lord of the Dead.
the thing about hades/pluto is that (always speaking of the pjo version ofc) he does love his children. hazel, bianca, nico. he has shitty ways of expressing things, undoubtedly, but he seems to be much more into what they do, where they are, and if they're okay! he protects them even unknown to them
did hades love maria di angelo? 100%, nobody would doubt that. when he's talking to her about taking them to the underworld or the casino, she's very comfortable, they're both very mushy, the kids are not paying attention (they would be if hades being there was such an uncommon event), clearly he's been around --if not as a family, then enough that the novelty of his presence has long worn off--
did pluto love marie levesque? idk. she summoned him somehow, not really looking for him in particular, but eh, you get what you get. he clearly has been following hazel's life, but his relationship with marie doesn't look as if it was ever loving. it's even implied marie only wanted him bc he looked "fancy" and she wanted to be rich, and a "queen", did pluto love her anyway in return?

PJO Steddie Five

Here it is! We learn El's parent in this one, and there's a wonderfully healthy dose of Steddie throughout the whole part.

It should not have taken five days to drive from Athens, Tennessee, to Camp Half-Blood in Long Island. Eddie wouldn't be surprised if Chrissy and his bandmates thought he'd died some horrible death while on this retrieval. But Eddie would love to meet the person who can tell Steve and a gaggle of demigod children to hurry up and get to camp already. They spent two days at Hearth and Home just for the pool, and various stops along the way followed that same pattern.
It was, in all honesty, the most relaxed retrieval mission Eddie has ever fucking experienced. Only one monster ever gave them trouble (another harpy--go figure--that Steve dispatched with ease and no injury) while the rest would sniff around and eventually have their eyes glaze over like they'd lost interest or encountered something familiar. They'd then move on, leaving the group to continue their meal in relative peace.
But for as relaxed as Eddie and the kids are, Steve is ramped to the absolute limit. His shoulders remain tense, his leg bounces whenever he sits still too long, his eyes constantly survey their surroundings, and he seems to have placed a distance between himself and Eddie. It hurts to see, especially considering the literal spark between them, but Eddie tells himself it's just until they get to camp and Steve sees for himself that they're safe.
And that moment is getting closer as they hike up Half-Blood Hill, Steve's car left at the foot until Eddie can convince Chiron and Mr. D to let him park it in the camp itself. "That big tree there is where the protective barrier starts," Eddie explains, pointing at Thalia's tree. "It used to be a girl, but there was a whole thing with the Golden Fleece, and long story short, she's running around with Artemis now."
"Can I run around with Artemis?" Max asks, her voice eager as she falls back to keep pace with Steve and Eddie.
Steve snorts, and Eddie notices the way his hand tightens on his bat. His knuckles turn white and the muscles in his forearm straining slightly and Eddie has to look away before his mouth gets too dry. "Maybe when you're older," Steve says, "After you can beat me in a spar."
Max groans, stomping her way back to Lucas with hunched shoulders and a quiet mutter that she won't be winning anytime soon.
They reach the top of the hill then, and Eddie watches as the group slows down. El in particular falls back until she's next to Steve and can grip his hand tightly. Her beanie seems to be squirming, but the movement is so subtle that Eddie thinks he's probably seeing the air ripples from the heat. He hurries to the front of the group and grins at them. "Okay! You ready to enter Camp Half-Blood, AKA the best place ever?" he asks.
"Just get on with it already," Mike says, crossing his arms as Erica nods in agreement.
Eddie, in an incredibly mature move, sticks out his tongue, and he's rewarded with a quiet laugh from Steve. "As I was saying, once you pass by the tree, I'll introduce you to Chiron, the activities director here. After that, we'll get cabin arrangements, measure you for armor and swords, and give a full tour. Of course, I'll be the one showing you around, which means you'll be getting the best possible version of the tour."
He waits for applause, but it never comes, and Eddie pouts at them. "Can't you be more excited? This is, like, the first time I've managed to bring back kids who aren't terrified."
"Oh boy," Dustin says, his voice high and fake, "I can't wait for Eddie to show us around Camp Half-Blood."
"Joke all you like, Henderson, I'm taking it as a compliment," Eddie says, darting forward and pushing down the bill of Dustin's cap. He moves back easily and claps his hands. "Okay! Step on through, please."
The kids all glance back at Steve, and he smiles encouragingly. As a group, they move past the perimeter of the tree until only Steve and El are left standing on the edge. Eddie flashes a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, it's gonna be great. El and the kids can meet more demigods their age, and you, Stevie, can relax since you won't have any monsters coming after you."
Steve nods and looks at El. "You ready?" he asks. She holds his hand even tighter--and Eddie is starting to worry about Steve's bones here--but nods.
Together, they step over the threshold.
Or, well, Steve does. El is stuck on the other side, Steve's hand still in hers but unable to pull her through. Her shoulders drop, and despite Steve's best efforts, she can't get an inch over the barrier that ripples between them. Resigned, she looks down at their hands, her grip starting to loosen some.
Eddie stares at this scene with wide eyes, and a few things suddenly make sense. No wonder Steve wouldn't say who El's godly parent is. She technically doesn't have one. The odd protectiveness makes a lot of sense now, too. And so does the way monsters would apparently move on like the gaggle of demigods was uninteresting.
"Well," Steve says, breaking Eddie out of his epiphany, "we gave it a shot."
With that, he steps back through the barrier, the rest of the kids quickly follow suit, and Eddie can feel them slipping through his fingers. "Wait!" he shouts, relieved when Steve looks up at him.
He's about to give El permission, to say everything is gonna be fine, to beg on his fucking knees if that will keep Steve--and the kids, of course--from walking away.
This is, of course, when the fucking armored and armed barrier patrol (a tradition that never really faded despite the camp's renewed safety) decides to show up.
Eddie just can't get a fucking break, huh?

The moment arrows, swords, and spears (among other weapons) are aimed at them, Steve shoves the kids behind him. El sticks the closest, practically hugging his back, but he knows she'll pull away if it comes down to a fight. Steve twirls his bat, his eyes narrowed as he takes stock of his potential opponents.
The barrier shimmers between the two groups, a slight haze in his vision, and Eddie stands in the middle, one foot on each side of the barrier, looking a little frazzled. That's when a girl comes forward, her blonde hair pulled in a ponytail, a bow in hand, and her quiver slung over her shoulder. She smiles at Eddie, bright like the sun, and Steve feels a familiar-but-not kind of buzzing under his skin.
"Eddie! You're okay!" she shouts, dashing forward and hugging him tightly.
Steve's throat feels tight as Eddie hugs her back, his grip on the bat straining until he hears the reinforced wood groan and forces himself to loosen up. "Eddie," he says, a huge part of him relieved when Eddie immediately looks at him.
The girl looks between the two of them, and her eyes widen, and she smiles excitedly, and Steve suddenly feels a little better.
"Hello, I'm Chrissy," she says, walking over to stand across the barrier from Steve. "We got an alert that a monster was trying to cross, so we came to offer help. Everything looks fine, though, so come on through."
Steve feels El tug on the back of his shirt as the kids shift nervously. "We're good, actually," Lucas blurts out, unable to handle the silence.
Chrissy blinks, her smile still present but her eyebrows furrowing in confusion. "You're...good?" she asks.
"Yeah," Steve says, licking his lips nervously, "I'm sure Camp Half-Blood is fun and all, but we can't stay."
"Why not? You'll be safer here."
Steve doesn't know how to answer that question, and El spares him the effort of trying to by saying, "I can't get through." He wants to spin around and grab her shoulders and ask what she's thinking, but it's El's choice to tell people, no matter how much Steve might disagree with her.
"Oh," Chrissy says, her smile dimming some before she brightens again. "Are you mortal? That's okay, we can just give you permission."
It's the perfect excuse, and Steve is ready to fucking run with it, but El shakes her head. "I'm not mortal," she says.
A heavy silence falls over the group on the other side of the barrier as the demigods understand what she means. "What kind of monster are you?" a boy asks, his hand twitching as though ready to reach for an arrow.
"Look, it doesn't matter," Steve says, a bad feeling forming in his gut. His nerves start buzzing on instinct, crackling and pulling at the clouds just a tiny bit. "We'll leave you alone and go our separate ways. You'll....you'll never see us again." And Steve can't help his voice softening, glancing at Eddie as he says that last part.
Because he wants to see Eddie again. He wants to learn about the literal spark they shared. He wants to know if Eddie's lips are soft or rough. But Steve always puts the kids first. Their safety comes before everything else, even himself.
"Wait! There's no need to go," Eddie says, holding his hands out to both sides but looking at Steve. "El isn't dangerous. We can still give her permission."
"Like Hades we are!" the same boy shouts.
"Jason!" Chrissy says, her tone hard as she whirls around.
Jason looks insulted and confused. "What are you yelling at me for? I'm not the one trying to bring a fucking monster into camp."
"She's not a monster! Stop saying that," Mike shouts, trying to push forward only for Steve to push him right back.
"Oh? Then what is she?" Jason asks.
"Her name is El," Steve says, his voice hard and unforgiving, "and she is my sister."
Several of the campers' eyes widen, and suddenly their bows are loaded and ready to shoot. "You brought two monsters to camp!" a girl shouts, glaring at Eddie.
Steve frowns, trying to control the building anger and wariness. Based on the slowly gathering clouds overhead, it's not working.
"Those things are dangerous," Jason says, his eyes narrowed. "I bet the rest are monsters in disguise, too."
"No!" Eddie shouts, "they got through the barrier."
"Oh? Prove it. Walk through right now."
The kids don't move an inch and neither does Steve. Chrissy turns back to them, an uncomfortable grimace tugging at her lips. "It would really help to diffuse things if you could just step over," she says softly.
"Not without El," Max says, glaring at the group.
"Or Steve," Lucas adds.
Despite everything, Steve can't help a wry smile and a joking, "Gee, thanks for thinking of me," thrown over his shoulder.
"Well, isn't that convenient," Jason sneers, "None of the monsters want to cross."
He pulls his bowstring back a little farther, and the clouds above them start to gather faster, tiny sparks jumping under Steve's hand on the bat. He grits his teeth, trying desperately to not get lost in anger, and takes a deep breath. "Listen, this obviously isn't going to work," he says, looking at Eddie. He smiles apologetically. "Thank you for trying, though. It was...a nice thought."
And then several things happen all at once.
Eddie's eyes widen, desperation seeps into them, and he shouts, "I give El permission to cross the barrier!"
El starts to move around Steve like she wants to talk to Chrissy herself, her beanie squirming obviously.
The rest of the kids behind Steve get caught up in El's movements and try to follow, pushing Steve forward a step and bumping El slightly to the side.
His annoyance flares, and dark clouds stretch above them with a quiet, nearly inaudible rumble of thunder.
Finally, an arrow is loosed from the group of demigods, and its path would have been true if not for the kids pushing Steve. Instead, it shoots El's beanie clear off her head and lands in the grass behind the kids, just barely missing Dustin and Will in the process.
Really, Steve can't be blamed for what happened next. Between El's snakes freaking out and the kids shouting and the arrow in the grass overpowering his vision, he really can't be blamed.
It's only understandable that he loses it, that his tenuous control fucking snaps.
A bellowing crack of thunder above them is the only warning the demigods get before a bolt of lightning strikes the ground right next to them. The sheer force of it creates a whole nearly two feet deep, knocking the demigods back a few feet as more bolts follow in its wake. Each one burns the ground where it strikes, and tiny fires feed on the grass.
Little arches of lightning jump across Steve's arms, his hair fluffing out slightly from the static. His chest is heaving from anger and electricity and the aftermath of so much tension finally breaking free as bolts corral the demigods into a tiny circle, striking all around them to prevent escape.
"Steve," El says, the sound of her grabbing his attention more than her words. But when Steve looks at her and sees the snakes on her head rubbing against each other and tasting the air and trying to stay as close to her scalp as possible, his anger flares again at the reminder of the arrow that could have killed his kids. Not only the arrow, but El's snakes could have hurt them, too. If not for the kids immediately squeezing their eyes shut, a few might be statues right now. Sure, it would wear off in a bit, and Steve is immune anyway since he's related to El, but it's fucking inconvenient and dangerous given the situation.
"Stay back," he growls, his words crackling with the lightning as he turns back to the demigods. They look scared shitless, and Steve hasn't even done anything yet. The only ones who haven't been corralled are Chrissy and Eddie, since neither of them actually did anything.
He steps forward, an arch of lightning stretching between his heel and the ground when he lifts his foot. The nails on his bat spark and glow red, looking nearly as angry as Steve feels. Steve crosses the barrier, feels it wash over him, and stops just on the other side. He smiles at the demigods, feral and unrestrained as a storm, and raises his hand to the sky.
Or he starts to only for his view to be blocked by brown hair in desperate need of a good shampoo and big brown eyes. Steve blinks, a tiny portion of his anger calming if only because he's looking at Eddie. "Move, Eds," he says.
"Stevie," Eddie whispers, his voice nearly drowned out by the rumbling thunder. So Steve pulls it back, forces it to quiet down so he can hear. "C’mon, sweetheart, there's no need to smite them. They've already peed themselves."
"They almost killed my kids," Steve says, his eyes narrowing slightly. "What would you do if you were me?"
"Well, I wouldn't look nearly as hot, for one," Eddie jokes, flashing a shaky smile.
"You're already plenty hot," Steve blurts, the shock of the words calming him down a tiny bit more. And, when he hears Lucas and Erica behind him complain as El thanks Will for retrieving her beanie, his anger finally soothes enough for lightning to stop striking the ground. The clouds are still hanging over them, though, and sparks still arch across his arms and through his hair.
Eddie's smile becomes a bit wider. "Seriously, sweetheart, there's no need," he promises. "I already gave El permission to enter. She can cross the barrier. Word will spread in camp that nobody can mess with her without getting their shit rocked by a very powerful son of Zeus. Don't you want to relax? Don't you want the kids to meet others like them? Don't you...don't you want to, you know, spend time together?"
Steve does want all of that. Especially that last one, because he's never been talked down from an unbridled, anger-fueled, lighting strike marathon this easily. Usually, the kids have to let him work through the anger and vent it all before he's back to normal.
He takes a deep breath, closing his eyes to focus on calming down. When Eddie hesitantly takes his hand, Steve calms down even faster, and the sparks that pass between their palms are harmless. "That's it, Stevie," Eddie whispers as Steve's shoulders relax. "Besides, you can always beat Jason's ass at capture the flag later."
Steve can't help laughing at that, and he opens his eyes to see Eddie's smile. "Looking forward to it," he says, squeezing Eddie's hand. Then he looks over his shoulder at the kids. "Is everyone okay?" he asks.
The kids are all gathered around El, who has secured her beanie over her head. Unfortunately, the arrow made a larger hole than expected, and two of her snakes are poking their heads out, tongues flicking as they taste the air. They aren't strong enough on their own to actually turn anyone to stone, so none of the kids avoid looking at them.
"We are fine," El says with a tiny smile as she steps forward. Steve is about to tell her to be careful when she walks through the barrier without a problem.
The other kids follow, sticking close to El and then orbiting toward Steve and Eddie. "That was awesome!" Dustin shouts, his eyes bright as he looks at the scorch marks that create a circle around the demigods that haven't moved an inch.
"Yes, it was awesome," a voice says, old and wise and belonging to a centaur that has trotted over from the camp gates and comes to a stop before them. "Though, probably not in the way you mean, young one."
"Chiron, hey, how's it going?" Eddie asks, rubbing the back of his neck as he shifts to stand in front of Steve. "This, uh, was all a misunderstanding, really."
Chiron raises an eyebrow at Eddie, but Steve can see the twinkle of amusement in his eyes. "I see. Is that so, Chrissy?" he asks.
"Yeah, it is," Chrissy says, nodding once as she glances at Jason, "because Jason was trigger-happy and wouldn't let anyone talk."
"I see," Chiron says again, looking back at Steve and the kids behind him. "Well, I look forward to hearing all about it and getting to know our potential campers at the Big House. Over some snacks, perhaps?"
He seems nice enough, and something about Chiron just makes Steve feel confident that nothing will happen to the kids. At least, not for the next hour or so, and that's good enough. Still, he can't help pushing just to see the extent of Chiron's patience. "Even if my sister's mother is a gorgon?" he asks, watching Chiron closely.
"Am I correct in assuming her mother is Medusa?" Chiron asks.
"Yes," El says, answering for Steve as the two snakes poking through rub their heads on Steve's arm. "She's very nice."
Chiron seems to be holding back an amused smile at that, and he nods. "I'm sure," he says, nodding once. "Yes, you are still welcome, my dear. After all, our very own Eddie Munson has vouched for you."
Steve can feel the kids behind him relaxing, and he glances at Eddie to see the relieved smile on his face. "Okay then," he says, looking back at Chiron, "lead the way."

I cannot get over how perfect the casting was for the show as a whole, but I want to highlight how perfect the gods were.
I can see Lin Manuel Miranda visiting May, checking up on her, while she waits for Luke to come home.
I see his defeated expression when his son dies. How he clearly blames himself
I can see him blaming Annabeth and Thalia for not changing his mind
I can see him talking to George and Martha, and helping Percy sneak out of camp
I can see Jay Duplass buying Hazel colored pencils, and fumbling about trying to raise Nico.
I can see him with his hands over his ears trying to ignore Nico’s nagging to get him to join the battle of Manhattan.
I can see his face when his Mother in Law moves in and tries to make everyone eat cereal.
I can see his anger as Maria DiAngelo is murdered. And How he just barely manages to save his children.
This is the man who cursed the oracle in rage and pain. Saying no one could take her place as long as his kids were outcasts
I can see him lock up the boy his son is crushing on, and being beaten up by him five minutes later.
I can send Timothy Omundson watching monitors, keeping tabs on Leo and his siblings, wishing he knew how to talk to them.
I can see him building mechanical animals and visiting Calypso.
I can see him saving the head of his son’s pet dragon. So proud that he was able to tame it and put it back together.
Can’t you see Toby Stephens offering to build a palace for Sally Jackson
See him falling in love with her
See him still in love with her.
He tells Percy that he’s his favorite son.
He lets his home be destroyed because his son asked him to come help.
I can see his face light up when he thinks Paul’s last name is Blowfish.
I can imagine Adam Copeland taking his anger out on Clarisse. Demanding that she take his revenge. Blaming her. Demanding she earn her keep.
I can see him with a grenade pen, bullying terrified kids into giving Frank a promotion, and the look on his and everyone else’s face when amnesiac Percy says that he’s pretty sure he’s beat him up before.
We’ll never get to see Lance Reddik turn Thalia into a tree.
Or him fall for a movie star and have two children with her.
We’ll never see him promise one of them to his wife as a peace offering.
But can’t you just imagine the look on his face when he offers Percy immortality, and in return gets told to pay his child support.
and Jason Mantazoukus is literally Dionysus. There is no question.
This is the man who eats popcorn and watches drama go down between campers
Genuinely distraught when he loses Castor. He asked Percy to protect Pollux cause he can’t stand the thought of losing another child
The god who refuses to acknowledge or learn anyone’s names because knowing their names makes it more difficult when he watches them go off and die
who doesn’t like Percy or demigods like him because they remind him of Theseus.
Who helps mend Chris’s minds after he goes mad in the maze.
Who pretends not to care because he cares too much.
The gods can change their form and look like whatever the heck they want, but it takes true talent for an actor to fill those shoes so perfectly. I love it.

I made a hypothetical roster for a Percy Jackson Fighting game
Info Dumping about specific ideas under the cut (beware of spoilers):
Also, the order of the characters is spoilery, sorry.
General Concepts:
Takes story place at a tournament at Camp Jupiter’s coliseum
The Super meter leads to a character calling upon the blessing of a god (or other powerful figure). Usually their parents, with a few exceptions. I think there’d be an in-universe rule that that fighter would need to prove their skill before they’d get their godly blessing.
The character designs would be based off of the illustrations for the books. I could see the characters getting costumes based on their show counterparts. But I don’t think Rick Riordan would want costumes based on the movie versions
Base Roster:
Percy Jackson: the accessible protagonist. Standard sword attacks. Some water based ability. Supper is the blessing of Poseidon, which stars with a tidal wave to knock enemies off balance, and then gives his moves more water based properties and boosted damage.
Annabeth Chase: maybe her invisibility cap could be a counter. Even though she lost her dagger, I think I’ll still give her one, making her a fighter who needs to strategically sneak around to find opponent’s openings. I think she could also use her Drakon bone sword. Maybe a bit of a stance fighter, to add to the strategy? Super is the blessing of Athena, which slows down the enemy, making it easier to plan against them
Grover Underwood: He uses nature magic, so he’d be more of a zoner. Maybe some kicking attacks too, considering the goat legs His super is the blessing of Pan, which leads his opponents Panics, thus debuffed and hard to control for a bit.
Tyson: A grappler, I could see him also having some club attacks. I’m already doubling up on Blessings unfortunately. I think his Poseidon blessing could put more focus on the Earthshaker aspect, while Percy’s would be more water based. As for why Poseidon would pick favorites if her and Percy fought…eh, gameplay and story segregation
Clarisse La Rue: A rushdown character. Different attacks use different weapons, with her electric spearbeing her default. . Her blessing would be Ares, giving her a huge attack and speed buffs
Thalia Grace: A zoner, using her arrows and her lighting spear to attack from a long range. Her Shield can reduce damage to those who do manage to get in close. I was debating whether to give her the blessing of Zeus or Artemis…but then I discovered she’d be the only child of Zeus on the base roster. It’d give longer range on lighting attacks
Nico di Angelo: A puppet fighter who uses zombies and skeletons to attack. He can also get behind opponents with shadow travel. He gets the blessing of Hades, leading to more puppets on screen at once
Rachel Elizabeth Dare: My self indulgent weird pick. I could see her using everyday objects to fight (like the hairbrush she hit Kronos with once). She’d deal low damage and have lower HP, but because of her powers and divine protection as the Oracle, and her divine protection she’d be decently evasive. Her blessing would be the Oracle of Delphi, which would make her future sight so advanced she can’t be hit when it activates. So she’d be the weakest character until she gets the blessing, and then becomes OP while it’s active.
My memories of Heroes of Olympus is a bit fuzzier, so I’ll do my best here
Piper McLean: A short ranged character who fights with a dagger. She can also debuff and stun opponents with Charmspeak. The Blessing of Aphrodite makes these effects even more devastating.
Leo Valdez: He attacks with both metaphorical and literal firepower. Always summoning some new tool or contraption, and always setting up some new trap on the stage. With the Blessing of Hephaestus, He fights with red hot weaponry His tools deal even more damage, and gain a fire effect. I could also see it summoning a mini replica of Festus
Frank Zhang: A stance fighter. By default he uses bows and arrows, but he can shift to being a shapeshifter. He can start a combo as one and end as the other. With the Blessing of Mars, he also becomes stronger and faster. Unlike Poseidon, I think it makes more sense for Ares to play favorites
Hazel Levesque: Would it be practical to have her ride a horse? She’d also have a lot of earth based abilities, and I could see her using gems and projectiles. I could see her also using shadow travel With the Blessing of Pluto, gems sprout to the ground doing damage to her opponent.
Reyna Ramírez-Arellano: She has a spear that can shift into a sword, as well as a dagger, so I can see another stance fighter. With the Aegis Cloak, she can be very tanky. The belling of Bellona will boost her attack and speed, but lower some of that tough defense. (Maybe she lets go of the cloak to focus more on offense)
I never read Trials of Apollo, so I’m relying on the wiki for ideas
Will Solace: Another archer. He also can use light based attacks. He’s more of a healer, so now I’m wondering if the game should be team based. But I’m not sure there’s enough characters to support that
Apollo/Lester Papadopoulos: The Sun god himself. I think he’d turn himself mortal gain to give the others a fighting chance, but would access his god powers for his super meter. He’d have light abilities, archery, and some sword attacks at closer range. The gift of prophecy could give him some good counters
Meg McCaffrey: Probably a zoner with plant based abilities. They’d intensify with the Blessing of Demeter.
Lavinia Asimov: Slow, heavy attacks with her Manubalista. But she’d mainly rely on her dancing abilities to fight. With the Blessing of Terpsichore, she can move faster and combo easier
Lityerses: A hard hitting rushdown character. He’s never shown plant abilities, so I think the blessing of Demeter would just heal him a bit
Bosses: (I’ll make them unlockable. I don’t like characters in the game you have to buy)
Main Boss: Ares (For now anyway). Obviously the god of war would want to get involved in a tournament. I admit it’s a bit questionable, seeing how Percy beat him when he was 12, but it’d probably be a lot harder to actually beat him over just getting 1st blood. He would be a big damage, unga bunga character, and when he activates his super meter, he’d take off his glasses revealed his eyes of fire, and get even tougher
There’s the question why Ares would boost Clarisse and Frank when he’s trying to win. Uh, gameplay and story segregation. Or maybe he wants to fight them at their best to prove his strength.
Secret Dream Match: (Do well enough, and you get a non-canon super though bonus boss fight against)
Luke Castellan: A strong, ruthless swordsman. He’d hit fast, hit hard, and have a very useful counter. Instead of his parent, his blessing will be from Kronos, which swaps Backbiter with Kronos’s scythe, and boosts his power. In the final round against him, he’ll permanently be in blessing mode, completely possessed by Kronos, just like in the Last Olympian. I just think it’s fitting for the final boss to be the same as the original series.
DLC Season 1 (Dead characters) (SPOILERS)
Jason Grace: I learned he died because of unfortunate wiki walking. He’d be a stance fighter with Juno’s Gladius switching from sword to spear. He’d have eclectic and wind abilities as well to provide range. The Blessing of Jupiter would be a straightforward attack buff, but I could see a thunderstorm being summoned as well.
Charles Beckendorf: A similar playstyle as Leo, but slower and heavier, and without fire. The blessing of Hephaestus would extend the size and range of his attacks and traps
Silena Beauregard: A similar move set to Piper, but with a more medium range since she uses a sword
Zoe Nightshade: An zoner with hero bow. Would get the blessing of Artemis, improving her range and giving her attacks a homing element.
Bianca Di Angelo: Another zoner, with the ability to summon the occasional zombie. She’d gain an every powerful puppet with the Blessing of Hades. This is an interesting case, since she never knew her father.
Daedalus/Quintus: Another Swordmaster. Maybe some technology. And Mrs. O’ Leary as an assist DLC season 2 (Crossover characters)
Carter Kane: He’d fight with a Khopesh, which would temporarily disarm the appointment if you strike at the right time. He can also turn into a falcon, and temporary turn his opponents into creatures. He’d have some long ranged spells as well. His blessing would tap into his power as the avatar of Horas, boosting his physical abilities
Sadie Kane: A long ranged magic user. She’d fight with a staff and wand. Her blessing would tap into the power as the Avatar of Isis to boost her speed and range.
Magnus Chase: A puppet fighter, with Jack as the puppet. He could provide buffs and healing to himself. Another argument for having a team mechanic, since he excelled at healing and boosting others. The Blessing of Frey would provide healing and an omniboost
Alex Fierro: A rushdown shapeshifter. She could turn into various animals, and even into other fighters. She’d also have a Garrote Wire for some neutral tracks. The “blessing” of Loki would cause her to randomly transform her into another character for a brief amount of time, as well as mess up the controls of her opponent.I’d cause chaos for both size, which I think is fitting for Loki

At Skyfall
This is the end
And well, Percy knew it was. Just by looking around, he could clearly see the blood and corpses of his friend, cousins and family on the ground. Annabeth had already perished to the poisoned blade meant for him.
Hold your breath and count to ten
Taking a deep shuddering breath, Percy tried to remove the grisly sight of his loved ones' death. Clarisse had fallen to her own spear being shoved into her heart, with her last words pleading with him to end the war and not let her sacrifice be in vain. Young Nico, so full of life before had turned into someone unrecognizable, fueled by revenge and hate, eventually fell to his own fatal flaw- holding grudges. Thalia, was killed in the one way no demigod should be killed- death by her own powers and father’s domain.
Feel the Earth move and then
Gaia, the mother of Kronos and primordial of the earth, had risen once more from her slumber due to Kronos summoning her with most of the peaceful Titans power and ichor. She had killed off most of the demigod population, leaving few alive. The only demigods left included him and Will Solace, a son of Apollo and someone close to him. Percy just knew that he would never forgive himself if anything had happened to him.
Hear my heart burst again
Every time Percy remembered the blood curdling screams, he wondered why he didn’t try harder to save them- his family. Nearly everyone had fallen two days before his birthday, before the final stare down with Kronos.
For this is the end
When Percy stared down Kronos, all he could feel was cold calculating rage. The kind that festers and burns in and just smites those receiving it. The pain of losing Annabeth was crushing. Not only her, but everyone who he had ever owed his loyalty to. Percy just knew that he would do anything to kill Kronos, if only to keep Will alive.
I've drowned and dreamt this moment
And well, he had drowned in his own sorrow, his grief of losing them. All his self control had vanished and self sacrificial tendencies increased from Annabeth’s death. After all, Annabeth was the only one worth living for. Also, every single time he slept, he always had a pesky demigod dream, waking up with knowledge of present and future attacks, unable to do anything to change them. It was times like these when Percy really wanted to curse The Morai for royally screwing over his life.
So overdue, I owe them
He owed so many people his life- his mother, who did her best to mask his demigod scent, Annabeth, Zoe, Selena, Beckendorf- every single one of them who died had tried to protect him. And now, he couldn’t even repay them, for they were dead. Percy knew that he should’ve tried to live, not actively try to die whilst having a 14 year old kid with him. Yet, he could argue that he wasn't trying to die but instead wanted to save literally everyone else on earth. For Kronos would cause a dark age to arrive, torturing everyone who opposed him and even others just for fun. The gods had already fallen to Typhon, the bane of the gods and father of monsters, and were reforming in Tartarus.
Swept away, I'm stolen
And when he was supposed to die, he had been swept away by the last vestiges of his father’s power to Camp Half Blood, which had been the only place with enough ambrosia to save him. Will had saved him, but had been traumatized by the near death of the only family he had left. He may not have died then but he had lost a piece of himself in the process- his care for others life. Do not take him wrong, he would die to save Will, but he would no longer hold back on killing the enemy demigods.
Let the sky fall
Sometimes, Percy wonders how different it would be if he had been left under the sky, or he was allowed to let go of the weight of the sky, letting it fall. Would the future have changed? Would the gods have won? Would his family still live on?
When it crumbles
The age of the western civilization was about to end. No matter what Percy did or could try to do, there would only be two outcomes- Kronos winning and killing him, or him killing Kronos and waiting for the gods or some other deity to take over New York, if it even existed by then.
We will stand tall
And Percy would stand tall, with all of the remnants of his friends and with Will. He would stand up straight, unyielding till death, even in death, till he met the other fallen heroes in Elysium. There would be time to break down and beg for forgiveness- for playing a part in killing them( however indirectly), for throwing them into war.
Face it all together
He would face Kronos, with all his rage and festering emotions, emotions that he had tried and tried upon to release by killing thousands of monsters, and extract his revenge. The Big Three had made an oath on the Styx to not have demigod children not only because of the prophecy, but also because of the power harnessed by them. They could turn the tide of wars or burn down civilization. The demigods could harness the power of the elements itself- air, thunderstorms and lightning for Zeus’ kids, water, storms and geokinesis( the control of the movement of the geokenotic plates of earth, allowing them to cause earthquakes) for children of Poseidon, shadow manipulation, finding precious metals and controlling them and the power to raise and speak to the dead for Hades’ children. Their rage and pain made them uncontrollable, like the air, like the sea, like the earth. When they set their mind on something, with their longing of revenge, there would be people or monsters caught in the crossfire.
Let the sky fall
And when given the choice, Percy would rather let the sky fall and crumble than live to see Kronos’ reign. For the underworld would be kinder to Will and him, as compared to the cruel torture Kronos would specifically bestow on them. However, if Percy won, he would do anything, literally anything, to give Will a normal life, a safe one where he didn’t have to look behind his back for enemies ready to slaughter him. When he says anything, he means anything. Percy would gladly sell his demigod blood for research, kill others, work 17 hours a day or even try to help him with some homework.
When it crumbles
That was what Percy would do. Even as his resolve would crumble, he would use everything at his disposal, his control over the sea and many more( including Riptide), and kill every single thing that came to harm himself and Will- monster or not.
We will stand tall
Even as his world had crumbled, as his friends and family died, Will had been someone who helped him through it. The boy who he had begun to view as his kid had faced the same traumatic incidents as him but stood tall for him, showed the resilience that the sun showed on rainy days, trying its best to shower the world in light and warmth.
Face it all together
Percy and Will would face it all together, with Percy at the front lines of battle and Will his faithful archer who covered his weak spots. Will, the healer and top rate archer, with some prophetic abilities, was simply the best kid Percy could have ever known- and he was thankful for it.
At Skyfall
Till the end, till their last breath, they would fight- and try to claw their way out alive.

Chapter 7: WE MEET THE GOD WITH TWO FACES
Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it! For everyone else, here is an extra chapter this week to celebrate this mundane Thursday!

Will was whistling cheerfully to himself as he flipped to the next chapter like he wasn't about to read of the most evil place right beneath his camp. Nico had spent immeasurable hours down there feeling so alone and wishing for Percy's company and the stupid jokes he'd crack and the great, protective warrior he was to help him.
Looking back on the running, terror, broken bones and constant isolation left him unsurprised how different he was from those around him in retrospect. His first friend had been a ghost who deceived him.
It was a nice thought for a moment as Will read the chapter title, that at least as he remembered the stenches and adrenaline rushes of his own in to vivid detail to come right along with Percy, at least he'd come out with friends now.
Alex's eyes were alight at once with whom Percy was set to meet next. "If I could vote for you to kill a god, it'll be this one!"
"Alex, no," Magnus said in vain once more.
"Where's the downside?" He demanded. "Nobody would ever get stabbed in the back again, the worst of cowardly moves!"
"That's not how that works, in the slightest," Thalia sadly corrected. "Just because you killed Zeus doesn't mean lightning wouldn't flash through the sky and storms wouldn't come." Though she suspected it was happening above at just the hypothesis being put in the world.
Percy got an amused look in place as he imagined Zeus in his chair spitting out his drink and glancing around suspiciously.
"Poo," Alex huffed. It was actually a bit worrisome a two-face god was going to get one over on Percy instead, as nice as he was. He swore right then if this god resembled Quintus for one second he'd have to face facts on that answer.
We made it a hundred feet before we were hopelessly lost.
"Life goals. I can't make it down the block half the time without forgetting where I'm going some days," Jason said sardonically.
"It's a maze," Thalia rolled her eyes, "and Percy! It's a miracle he didn't get lost turning around."
"Your faith in me is instilling," but Percy's voice was nothing but accepting facts.
The tunnel looked nothing like the one Annabeth and I had stumbled into before. Now it was round like a sewer,
"If you actually run into a ninja turtle, I will take back every crack I ever said about you," Alex promised.
"Eh, depends on which one," Magnus mock agreed.
I shined a light through one of the portholes out of curiosity,
"Your soul animal is officially a cat Percy," Will chuckled.
"I still say it's seaweed," Thalia scoffed.
but I couldn't see anything. It opened into infinite darkness.
I thought I heard voices on the other side, but it may have been just the cold wind.
"Already understanding why Chris lost his mind down there," Jason muttered.
Annabeth tried her best to guide us. She had this idea that we should stick to the left wall.
"If we keep one hand on the left wall and follow it," she said, "we should be able to find our way out again by reversing course."
"Good in theory," Nico was already shaking his head though, "not an execution that can be followed." Which she already knew from her studying, mildly annoying him why she thought she was smarter than this place already.
Unfortunately, as soon as she said that, the left wall disappeared. We found ourselves in the middle of a circular chamber with eight tunnels leading out, and no idea how we'd gotten there.
Magnus made a very loud, awkward laugh that died quickly at this place literally mocking them in the face. It wasn't funny, but he wasn't screaming in terror, so this was better, right?
"Um, which way did we come in?" Grover said nervously.
"Just turn around," Annabeth said.
"If there is a brick wall behind you I will have no choice but to really laugh," Alex promised.
We each turned toward a different tunnel. It was ridiculous. None of us could decide which way led back to camp.
"Trippy, I actually like that answer better," Alex still laughed any ways.
"At least somebody does," Percy sighed.
"Left walls are mean," Tyson said.
"Tyson, still holding strong with the best lines in these," Jason applauded, and they couldn't decide how much sarcasm was in that.
"Which way now?"
Annabeth swept her flashlight beam over the archways of the eight tunnels. As far as I could tell, they were identical. "That way," she said.
"No consensus huh?" Thalia chuckled. "No voting, not even a flip of a coin?"
"Annabeth was our compass," Percy shrugged without surprise.
"I'm going to encase you in a magnet one of these days so you have to figure something out for yourself," Thalia mock threatened.
"How do you know?" I asked.
"Deductive reasoning."
"So...you're guessing."
"Just come on," she said.
"See, exactly the plan I would have had. Bring the magnet on!" Percy laughed.
"Only you," Thalia shook her head at these two.
The tunnel she'd chosen narrowed quickly. The walls turned to gray cement, and the ceiling got so low that pretty soon we were hunching over. Tyson was forced to crawl.
"Poor guy," Will frowned, "I bet he was carrying all the heavy stuff too."
"If he could have smashed his way to the surface I wouldn't blame him," Percy agreed.
Grover's hyperventilating was the loudest noise in the maze. "I can't stand it anymore," he whispered. "Are we there yet?"
"Thalia, your kid wants you," Percy smirked.
"On the weekends he's still yours," Thalia rolled her eyes.
"We started this quest on a Thursday!"
"I'm taking an extended vacation," she said with an unamused air, this joke had officially gone to a level that wasn't funny as images of her mom came to mind.
"We've been down here maybe five minutes," Annabeth told him.
"It's been longer than that," Grover insisted.
"I actually believe him on that, considering it was a few minutes to you but hours last time," Will nodded.
"And time means very little down there," Nico needlessly reminded.
"And a magical satyr thing that knows the time of the day too probably," Magnus rolled his eyes.
"And why would Pan be down here? This is the opposite of the wild!"
"I bet he got lost too," Percy said in something close to sympathy.
We kept shuffling forward. Just when I was sure the tunnel would get so narrow it would squish us, it opened into a huge room. I shined my light around the walls and said, "Whoa."
"The good kind or the bad kind?" Magnus already had a pit in his stomach no matter the answer, with Percy one could easily mean the other.
"The mildly impressive kind," Percy shrugged with a small grin.
The whole room was covered in mosaic tiles. The pictures were grimy and faded, but I could still make out the colors—red, blue, green, gold. The frieze showed the Olympian gods at a feast. There was my dad, Poseidon, with his trident, holding out grapes for Dionysus to turn into wine. Zeus was partying with satyrs, and Hermes was flying through the air on his winged sandals. The pictures were beautiful, but they weren't very accurate. I'd seen the gods. Dionysus was not that handsome, and Hermes's nose wasn't that big.
"Yeah, but like," Will was shaking with suppressed laughter, "if you knew the gods were real, you wouldn't question how they wanted to be painted."
"I can't draw, I wouldn't know," Percy rolled his eyes. Even if he tried doodling stick figures, he wouldn't exactly be doing his best to care.
Jason didn't hear them, there was a low buzzing in his ears. Something about the way that was described, something he'd been absently wondering but didn't know how to put into words until this moment. That sounded Roman. Should he know this labyrinth existed? He was certain he'd never been in, but finally, at this moment, he had the tiniest bit of a guess wondering if he'd ever tried to find this place.
In the middle of the room was a three-tiered fountain. It looked like it hadn't held water in a long time.
"That was the part you said whoa too, another fountain," Alex smirked.
"Guilty, I still felt bad about mine," Percy grinned.
"What is this place?" I muttered. "It looks—"
"Roman," Annabeth said. "Those mosaics area about two thousand years old."
"It must be exhausting knowing everything," Nico huffed.
"Probably," Will said innocently. The Athena cabin was the worst about asking for help, but when he saw one to many sleepless nights on them, he was a tad guilty about slipping something into their meals and blaming it on Travis and Connor's pranks.
"But how can they be Roman?" I wasn't that great on ancient history, but I was pretty sure the Roman Empire never made it as far as Long Island.
"And you think the Greeks did?" Magnus asked in concern. The whole point of these odd books was their never ending migration here and how that mingled in.
"I didn't think they brought souvenirs from the Roman Empire that toppled them," Percy rolled his eyes while Jason looked like he was swallowing his teeth one by one in consternation.
Thalia cleared her throat sharply to keep them moving fast when she saw.
"The Labyrinth is a patchwork," Annabeth said. "I told you, it's always expanding, adding pieces. It's the only work of architecture that grows by itself."
"I wish those words to never be spoken in that order again," Magnus groaned.
"That is so cool!" Alex yelped.
"Or those," Magnus huffed, it never meant anything good in this lot.
"Like, like Daedalus really built a second layer into the earth that's as alive as this planet!"
"Man was a mad genius," Percy agreed with a kind of awesome dread as he pictured someone in a white lab coat with lightning crackling screaming about it being alive over the whole planet.
"You make it sound like it's alive."
A groaning noise echoed from the tunnel in front of us.
"Does anybody speak labyrinth?" Will asked with mildly less cheer than usual, he didn't at all like the idea of being underground. "Maybe it's trying to tell you which way to go."
"I wish we could ask the labyrinth if they prefer he or she pronouns," Alex tapped his chin in thought. "I know most people depict the earth as feminine, but that gets into a long line of stereotypical depictions of nurturing and-"
Alex was only one part taking the mickey and one part serious, so he laughed it off and shelved that for later as Will politely cleared his throat to keep going over an answer they couldn't get anyways.
"Let's not talk about it being alive," Grover whimpered. "Please?"
"All right," Annabeth said. "Forward."
"Down the hall with the bad sounds?" Tyson said. Even he looked nervous.
"Yeah," Annabeth said. "The architecture is getting older. That's a good sign. Daedalus's workshop would be in the oldest part."
"And because she said that, I'm guessing it's going to remodel itself in twenty feet to look like a stainless steel lab." Jason frowned.
"I just hope there's not a monkey in there playing on the computer, I do not want to walk into an alternate dimension by accident," Percy wasn't sure he'd have the heart to fight cute animals if they were the dominant species.
That made sense.
"I'm glad it did to you," Magnus muttered, now personally trying not to imagine Daedalus packing up a phone booth and carrying his workshop around to never be found no matter what logic was used.
But soon the maze was toying with us—we went fifty feet and the tunnel turned back to cement, with brass pipes running down the sides. The walls were spray-painted with graffiti. A neon tagger sign read MOZ RULZ.
"I'm thinking this is not Roman," I said helpfully.
"You never know, I bet some ancient Roman could have gone by the name of Moz and been way ahead of time on, um, pipework," Will snickered.
Nico couldn't really find the humor in it, Will would have to really try to make him laugh about anything to do with this place, but it was a tad amusing to see Thalia roll her eyes at someone other than Percy.
Annabeth took a deep breath, then forged ahead.
"I've found the best way is to ignore him too," Thalia mock agreed as if Annabeth were her to commiserate with.
Her cousin was, and he didn't bother to muffle a snort.
Every few feet the tunnels twisted and turned and branched off. The floor beneath us changed from cement to mud to bricks and back again. There was no sense to any of it. We stumbled into a wine cellar—a bunch of dusty bottles in wooden racks—like we were walking through somebody's basement, only there was no exit above us, just more tunnels leading on.
"Jeez, I'm getting claustrophobic just hearing about this," Alex tugged at the collar of his shirt.
"Can't exactly go outside and stretch our legs in the sun too," Magnus agreed with an uneasy twitch. This room was by no means unbearable or small, but he'd never thought he'd have to associate constant common amenities with entrapment. And that group had it even worse down there.
Alex clearly wasn't going to let that keep him down though as he bounced back and asked, "please tell me you nabbed one of those! I can't even imagine the vintage on a long-lost bottle of wine!"
"I bet it was a cellar only Dionysus uses," Percy shook his head quickly. "Do you want to find out what would happen if we disturbed one of those cobwebs?"
Alex looked very much like he was contemplating that answer, and Thalia sighed once again at what a bad influence all of these idiots were on each other.
Later the ceiling turned to wooden planks, and I could hear voices above us and the creaking of footsteps, as if we were walking under some kind of bar. It was reassuring to hear people, but then again, we couldn't get to them. We were stuck down here with no way out.
"You're telling me if Tyson really wanted to he couldn't smash a house down?" Alex scoffed.
"Not a hundred percent sure," Percy admitted, "the labyrinth might fight him, turn into something even he couldn't break and shrink on us. Do you want to make the sentient maze mad?"
Alex didn't seem as concerned at the implications of that as Percy would have hoped, but then, he really should have known better by now.
Then we found our first skeleton.
It was the first dead body Percy had ever seen, and it didn't look like those fake skeletons for a Halloween decoration. He'd been killing monsters for years now, and yet he never thought of the mess they left behind as their form of a soulless husk. He rubbed his fingers together thoughtfully, his mind flickering to his mother and her clear sight. What she saw through the dust. She probably would have shielded his eyes from this, but it made his head and stomach groan in symbiotic pain to imagine her down there.
He was dressed in white clothes, like some kind of uniform. A wooden crate of glass bottles sat next to him.
"A milkman," Annabeth said.
"Those guys actually existed?" Nico asked in surprise. "I thought that was a weird gag in cartoons."
"It was a real job," Thalia nodded.
"When the fridge was invented, they went out of business," Magnus added helpfully.
"Huh, learn something new every day," Nico said with a surprised smile.
"What?" I asked.
"They used to deliver milk."
"Yeah, I know what they are,
"Which kind of concerns me how much Annabeth thinks of you," Thalia told him with sympathy.
"She never knew with me after I told her I thought my TV just wasn't big enough to see some old cartoon character's faces," Percy shrugged.
but...that was when my mom was little, like a million years ago. What's he doing here?"
"Some people wander in by mistake," Annabeth said.
"Those poor mortals," Magnus said with sorrow. He couldn't imagine how many little kids had fallen down there and never made it out. Maybe a few horror novels of things beneath the surface of the earth had been inspired by getting a peak down there, like the Labyrinth itself had enticed a kid with a clown and red balloon.
"Some come exploring on purpose and never make it back. A long time ago, the Cretans sent people in here as human sacrifices."
"And yet sadly, we've let cretin fall off the insult radar," Alex shook his head as if taking personal responsibility for this.
"Something I hope you won't bring back with historic accuracy," Magnus muttered.
Grover gulped. "He's been down here a long time." He pointed to the skeleton's bottles, which were coated with white dust. The skeleton's fingers were clawing at the brick wall, like he had died trying to get out.
"Well I hardly thought he was casually walking around chugging milk," Jason winced in disgust for getting details.
"Only bones," Tyson said. "Don't worry, goat boy. The milkman is dead."
"The milkman doesn't bother me," Grover said.
"Dead bodies still bother me," Magnus offered in case anybody had been in doubt about this.
"I guess this is one of the side effects to falling asleep every night singing Circle of Life," Percy shrugged.
"It's the smell. Monsters. Can't you smell it?"
Tyson nodded. "Lots of monsters. But underground smells like that. Monsters and dead milk people."
"Oh, good," Grover whimpered. "I thought maybe I was wrong."
"I can't think of a good instance of being happy to be wrong about smelling something," Alex nodded. "Usually it's food and I'm entirely upset I was wrong my senses lied to me."
"You smell smoke and think your house is on fire but your mom's just a bad cook," Thalia said with a way to twisted smile for that to just be a joke.
"Point to Thalia!" Alex chuckled all the same.
"We have to get deeper into the maze," Annabeth said. "There has to be a way to the center."
"I'm guessing taking a shovel and just digging won't work?" Nico rolled his eyes at her still trying to apply logic to any of this.
"The shovel would melt eventually," Will helpfully reminded.
"We could give her a spare shovel, gosh Will, be more creative," Percy snickered.
"I'm going to dump you in a volcano head first," Thalia sighed at them.
She led us to the right, then the left, through a corridor of stainless steel like some kind of air shaft, and we arrived back in the Roman tile room with the fountain.
"Oh, so it even circles around! That's much worse than being lost forever in a maze of endless rooms!" Magnus's voice was choking up by the end as he tried not to sound hysterical.
"It had added some decoration," Percy didn't soothe him one bit with the uneasy frown he spoke with.
This time, we weren't alone.
What I noticed first were his faces. Both of them.
Nico tried his hardest to swallow the lump of jealousy and hurt in his throat. Percy hadn't been in there but a few hours and he got a visit from a god already? He'd been in there for weeks before he'd found Minos and gotten any handle on what to do. Afraid to sleep, starving, only surviving on water that bled from the walls from gods knew where as the ghosts whispered which way to go to get further down...
He told himself he should be grateful instead. He wasn't the child of the prophecy, nobody had cared what happened to him. He'd made his own way out eventually without anybody's help, not even Minos had been there every step of the way.
They jutted out from either side of his head, staring over his shoulders, so his head was much wider than it should've been, kind of like a hammerhead shark's looking straight at him, all I saw were two overlapping ears and mirror-image sideburns.
Magnus was poking the middle of his forehead to make sure his head hadn't actually fallen apart at that newly brain-melting image.
"Not going to lie, when it said god of two faces, I didn't think it was going to be literal," Alex sounded grudgingly admirable of choosing to look like that. "I was picturing, like, two totally different faces melted together. Like the Batman villain."
"I have a feeling the two would still get along," Percy already had that now familiar look on his face like they should brace themselves for him to make a life long enemy.
He was dressed like a New York City doorman: a long black overcoat, shiny shoes, and a black top-hat that somehow managed to stay on his double-wide head.
"Classy," Will said in admiration.
"Never trust a man in a top hat," Alex scoffed.
"Now there's a story I'm sure," Magnus grinned.
"Don't get me started on Abe Lincoln," he agreed with distant eyes and a scowl at the ceiling.
"Well, Annabeth?" said his left face. "Hurry up!"
"Don't mind him," said the right face. "He's terribly rude. Right this way, miss."
Annabeth's jaw dropped. "Uh...I don't..."
Tyson frowned. "That funny man has two faces."
Jason scratched awkwardly at his nose before stage whispering, "has anybody ever come up with a polite way to scold kids for doing that?"
"Um, let them be curious but make sure they're polite questions?" Thalia offered.
"I'm not putting Tyson in time out if he offends this guy," Percy rolled his eyes.
"The funny man has ears, you know!" the left face scolded. "Now come along, miss."
"No, no," the right face said. "This way, miss. Talk to me, please."
"I need to know real quick if you can sign a different conversation than you say out loud?" Percy asked Magnus.
"I suppose if you can have two conversations at once it's possible, but not typical," he shook his head.
"Yeah, good to know, I got no better answer than chopping this guy in half to shut him up," Percy scowled, already wishing to uncap his sword to stop this guy focusing solely on Annabeth.
The two-faced man regarded Annabeth as best he could out of the corners of his eyes. It was impossible to look at him straight on without focusing on one side or the other. And suddenly I realized that's what he was asking—he wanted Annabeth to choose.
Behind him were two exits, blocked by wooden doors with huge iron locks. They hadn't been there our first time through the room. The two-faced doorman held a silver key, which he kept passing from his left hand to his right hand. I wondered if this was a different room completely, but the frieze of the gods looked exactly the same.
Behind us, the doorway we'd come through had disappeared, replaced by more mosaics. We wouldn't be going back the way we came.
"The exits are closed," Annabeth said.
"Duh!" the man's left face said.
"Where do they lead?" she asked.
"One probably leads the way you wish to go," the right face said encouragingly. "The other leads to certain death."
"I—I know who you are," Annabeth said.
"Oh, you're a smart one!" The left face sneered. "But do you know which way to choose? I don't have all day."
"Why are you trying to confuse me?" Annabeth asked.
"He's, um, not," Nico looked from the book to the others in concern if he was missing something. "He's pointing out the obvious as of right now. Does Annabeth find that confusing?"
Percy gave him the very exasperated sigh of a teacher explaining the obvious. "Just because she accepted the responsibility of something didn't mean she was okay with every layer of it." He knew that feeling all to well from all this big bad prophecy talk.
Nico looked at Percy with interest for how he'd unintentionally put that. He doubted Percy knew that's how he felt about what he'd said the other night, but it was another kind of relief to hear it put into words.
The right face smiled. "You're in charge now, my dear. All the decisions are on your shoulders. That's what you wanted, isn't it?"
"I—"
"We know you, Annabeth," the left face said. "We know what you wrestle with every day. We know your indecision. You will have to make your choice sooner or later. And the choice may kill you."
I didn't know what they were talking about, but it sounded like it was about more than a choice between doors.
The color drained out of Annabeth's face. "No...I don't—"
"Leave her alone," I said.
"That honestly took a page more than I thought it would," Will told him.
"I'm not fool enough to think Annabeth can't handle her own fights," but Percy looked plenty agitated enough to try right then with or without her approval.
"Who are you, anyway?"
"I'm your best friend," the right face said.
"I'm your worst enemy," the left face said.
"I'm Janus," both faces said in harmony. "God of Doorways.
"There's a god of doorways now?" Magnus asked, making the sign for door just to be sure. "What, did the Greeks have to stop and ask his permission and the owner before they entered?"
"He's not Greek!" Jason shouted at the top of his lungs like somebody had finally called on his name in class. He was more jazzed than if somebody had pumped him full of ambrosia...and yet so confused they might have put a Greek puzzle book in front of him for all the sense this made. "What the heck is a Roman god doing down there?"
"He's, ah, more symbolic than literal," Thalia was still watching Jason with mild concern as she tried to go on. "Let Will finish."
Beginnings. Endings. Choices."
"I guess that makes sense," Magnus agreed, though he still knew next time he walked down the block he'd get a twitch wondering about blood sacrifices and a crazy two-faced god throwing a key around following him. Gods forbid what someone was expected to do when a tree was cut down to make a door. Were you supposed to be making nice with Pan or the god you were using the wood for in that case?!
"I'll see you soon enough, Perseus Jackson," said the right face. "But for now it's Annabeth's turn." He laughed giddily. "Such fun!"
"We complete each other like two sides of a door," Percy grumbled, not looking remotely impressed that, for once, a god had the same reaction to seeing both of them.
"Shut up!" his left face said. "This is serious. One bad choice can ruin your whole life. It can kill you and all of your friends. But no pressure, Annabeth. Choose!"
Jason had a bad feeling he'd had his own reunion with this God too, maybe not so literal and in person, but the intense feeling circling the room of nobody disagreeing with that felt personal.
With a sudden chill, I remembered the words of the prophecy: the child of Athena's final stand.
"Don't do it," I said.
"I'm afraid she has to," the right face said cheerfully.
Annabeth moistened her lips. "I—I chose—"
Before she could point to a door, a brilliant light flooded the room.
Magnus instinctively didn't like that. He worried Hearth would get hurt and freak out, the light being too bright and temporarily blinding him, and he only usually saw Blitz at night, so he might have to step up real quick with no clue how if whatever this was ever found them.
Janus raised his hands to either side of his head to cover his eyes. When the light died, a woman was standing at the fountain.
She was tall and graceful with long hair the color of chocolate, braided in plaits with gold ribbons. She wore a simple white dress, but when she moved, the fabric shimmered with colors like oil on water.
"Are we meeting Iris?" Alex asked with immediate interest. He really hoped the rainbow goddess was cool. One of them had to be, right?
The disappointed sigh Thalia gave was an answer before she even said, "not even close."
"Janus," she said, "are we causing trouble again?"
"N-no, milady!" Janus's right face stammered.
"Yes!" the left face said.
"At least now I know which face I like better," Jason said as if this had been a serious concern.
"I still don't like any part of him," Percy huffed, he'd never like anyone who had hassled Annabeth.
"Shut up!" the right face said.
"Excuse me?" the woman asked.
"Not you, milady! I was talking to myself."
"I see," the lady said. "You know very well your visit is premature. The girl's time has not yet come. So I give you a choice: leave these heroes to me, or I shall turn you into a door and break you down."
"What kind of door?" the left face asked.
Alex gave an involuntary laugh like he'd been punched. And he was so sure he'd hate this god, yet that had been the first question to come to his mind too.
"Shut up!" the right face said.
"Because French doors are nice," the left face mused. "Lots of natural light."
"Shut up!" the right face wailed. "Not you, milady! Of course I'll leave. I was just having a bit of fun. Doing my job. Offering choices."
"Causing indecision," the woman corrected. "Now be gone!"
The left face muttered, "Party pooper," then he raised his silver key, inserted it into the air, and disappeared.
"Do I have to begrudgingly thank a god now?" Percy groaned. Apollo and Artemis had proved they weren't all bad, but he wasn't getting a good feeling from this one.
It wasn't very comforting Thalia didn't answer, but her scowl only grew.
The woman turned toward us, and fear closed around my heart. Her eyes shined with power. Leave these heroes to me. That didn't sound good. For a second, I almost wished we could've taken our chances with Janus. But then the woman smiled.
There had been something in that smile that reminded him of his mother. The kind of smile she'd given Gabe when she promised him meatloaf.
"You must be hungry," she said. "Sit with me and talk."
She waved her hand, and the old Roman fountain began to flow. Jets of clear water sprayed into the air. A marble table appeared, laden with platters of sandwiches and pitchers of lemonade.
"Who...who are you?" I asked.
"I am Hera." The woman smiled. "Queen of Heaven."
"I didn't know God was married," Magnus rolled his eyes. "No, wait, is she the goddess of nuns?"
"Stop trying to mix religions, it's more of a headache then we're already hearing," Nico groaned.
"Wrong heaven," Percy snorted, knowing full well Magnus had known that, but revenge was sweet.
"She obviously uses that title because she doesn't think much of herself," Alex agreed casually, while the others all twitched uneasily once more. They'd never quite get used to these guys being so flippant about how they addressed the gods, whether they were in the room or not.
I'd seen Hera once before at a Council of the Gods, but I hadn't paid much attention to her. At the time I'd been surrounded by a bunch of other gods who were debating whether or not to kill me.
"The real question is, do you remember if she was one of those to vote yes or no?" Nico asked with all the presumption in his voice of the answer.
Percy had to really think about it for a moment, and then shrugged and gave in, "no, not really. I remember who abstained though, so she fell into a lumpy category."
"She was lumped into a-" Magnus began, but he stopped with his own exasperated sigh as he realized Percy wasn't listening and back to humming a song that sounded suspiciously like something Jesse McCartney would sing.
I didn't remember her looking so normal. Of course, gods are usually twenty feet tall when they're on Olympus, so that makes them look a lot less normal. But now, Hera looked like a regular mom.
"Plus that whole they can change their appearance at whim thing," Will shrugged, he still wasn't over his dad, the homeless god Fred.
She served us sandwiches and poured lemonade.
"Grover, dear," she said, "use your napkin. Don't eat it."
"Excuse her, I live for that multi-purpose life," Alex scoffed.
"Yes, ma'am," Grover said.
"Tyson, you're wasting away. Would you like another peanut butter sandwich?"
Tyson stifled a belch. "Yes, nice lady."
"Queen Hera," Annabeth said. "I can't believe it. What are you doing in the Labyrinth?"
Hera smiled. She flicked one finger and Annabeth's hair combed itself. All the dirt and grime disappeared from her face.
"Gods, does she tuck your pockets in too and fuss about your weight?" Will's laugh was indulgent while Thalia looked like she was sucking on a lemon. More grateful by the moment this goddess would never give her faux motherly affection any more than her bio mom had.
"I came to see you, naturally," the goddess said.
Grover and I exchanged nervous looks. Usually when the gods come looking for you, it's not out of the goodness of their hearts. It's because they want something.
"I hope Athena has a little gold star waiting for you somewhere out there," Magnus told him cheerfully. "You do deserve it for moments like this."
"Stating the obvious?" Percy snorted.
"Not saying that out loud," Thalia scoffed.
Still, that didn't keep me from chowing down on turkey-and-Swiss sandwiches and chips and lemonade. I hadn't realized how hungry I was.
"And, now I'm hungry," Will huffed.
"I can usually tell how long when we've been at this when my butts gone numb," Magnus nodded.
"Food has been mentioned pretty frequently in the last few chapters," Percy agreed as he eyed the door to the rooms.
"We might as well take a snack break before anything to horrible in this Labyrinth does show up," Thalia agreed, and there was no more argument after that as they all took five. Before Hera could announce what she was there for, before the first monster showed up, before they realized how lost they were.
Will and Nico stepped back into the room where they'd set up their card game that indeed had not been disturbed one bit. They sat carefully on the bed, as far apart as normal on that couch, and split a plate of multiple different sandwiches with fruit-loops sprinkled on top, because the power of subliminal messaging had honestly left them craving exactly that.
Nico was clearly eating with reluctance, but he also didn't protest his half of the meal while Will found a way to talk about anything other than the Labyrinth for those moments. He talked about silly songs he wrote sporadically and his favorite color being orange and that time his sister Kayla had set the stables on fire while Nico watched with ever growing fondness for just being around him.
When they settled back down now prepared for the worst, Nico took the extra goofy minute Alex used to stretch and flex around like he was about to embark on the quest himself to share one last smile with Will when he opened the book up again whistling to find his place once more.
Tyson was inhaling one peanut butter sandwich after another, and Grover was loving the lemonade, crunching the Styrofoam cup like an ice-cream cone.
"All you're missing from that meal is bananas," Magnus grinned, he'd just housed five. He'd been taking full advantage of fresh fruit without a bruise on it here.
"I didn't think—" Annabeth faltered. "Well, I didn't think you liked heroes."
Hera smiled indulgently. "Because of that little spat I had with Hercules? Honestly, I got so much bad press because of one disagreement."
"A very large disagreement that caused multiple murders and is the most popular myth for a few reasons," Thalia muttered, not exactly Hera's biggest fan herself. It was a miracle she wasn't in the same boat as Hercules...and this goddess was definitely in her top five contenders of who might take Jason away to do gods knew what with all these years before Oceanus plopped him in here.
"Didn't you try to kill him, like, a lot of times?" Annabeth asked.
Hera waved her hand dismissively. "Water under the bridge, my dear.
"Is that bridge also on fire and broken in several places?" Thalia asked wearily.
"I didn't think to ask," Percy admitted, but he also didn't doubt it. He'd have to hear it from Hercules before he believed it, and even then, he'd still suspect something was up. Those stories were Not Pleasant, and even if they'd gotten lost in translation over time and they'd heard the wrong side of them, somebody had done something to make it all infamous.
His mind flickered to Zoe, and that snack of his tried to make a comeback. His instincts were still to distrust Hera, and Zoe had made him never wish to take Hercules's side without hearing every fact about what really happened, so this felt like a war he hoped to all the gods he'd never be in the middle of.
Besides, he was one of my loving husband's children by another woman. My patience wore thin, I'll admit it. But Zeus and I have had some excellent marriage counseling sessions since then. We've aired our feelings and come to an understanding
"I'm kind of wishing in this instance they'd taken the twenty-first-century approach and gotten a divorce though," Will sighed even if he knew that would never happen. Goddess of marriage and all that, gods forbid she ever admit she was wrong and should be in a real long term loving relationship, but man would it save a lot of demigods a lot of grief.
—especially after that last little incident."
"You mean when he sired Thalia?"
"Sired?" Thalia snorted fantastically. "What am I, a horse?"
"Just be grateful you came to mind at all," Percy chuckled, "I'm sure there are other much more famous kids of Zeus I could name instead. Like me!"
"How dare you," she sniffed, pressing her hand against her heart with wide blue eyes.
I guessed, but immediately wished I hadn't. As soon as I said the name of our friend, the half-blood daughter of Zeus, Hera's eyes turned toward me frostily.
"Percy Jackson, isn't it? One of Poseidon's...children." I got the feeling she was thinking of another word besides children.
"Sires," Magnus chuckled.
"Abominations?" Alex snorted.
"Minions," Thalia smirked.
"Disasters," Jason grinned.
Percy considered for a moment before shrugging and not denying any of those.
"As I recall, I voted to let you live at the winter solstice. I hope I voted correctly."
"Which does show some proof to her claim she doesn't hate all of us on principle," Will happily agreed.
"I'm sure she's still plenty selective about it," Nico said sullenly. He doubted if he'd been up for vote any god would have voted to let him live.
Will heard that in his voice, the reluctance, the edge of fear. He wanted to protest no god would dare vote against Nico after he'd helped save Olympus, but he could hardly argue that now. He stubbornly kept reading with the knowledge that he would.
She turned back to Annabeth with a sunny smile. "At any rate, I certainly bear you no ill will, my girl.
"I'm glad she sees that," Magnus said with a hint of relief, here finally was a god none of them were going to start on bad terms for merely existing. "A virgin goddess didn't technically have kids so she has no reason to dislike them."
"Loopholes for the win," but Percy only gave a halfhearted cheer. He had a bad feeling technicalities hadn't made his life easier much longer.
I appreciate the difficulty of your quest. Especially when you have troublemakers like Janus to deal with."
Annabeth lowered her gaze. "Why was he here? He was driving me crazy."
"Trying to," Hera agreed.
"Isn't Dionysus the god of the crazy people?" Magnus asked with a quiver of unease. "Does he have a deal with Janus to add to his list?" He clearly hadn't grasped from Jason's ever increasing gasping there was a significant difference at all, they wouldn't be making deals like that about anything.
"Just because he can turn people crazy doesn't mean he's responsible for all of them," but Will didn't sound so sure. Mr. D was supposed to be out here keeping an eye on these minor gods, and it seemed strange it hadn't been him to pop in and intervene...but would he even know this god existed? He knew the myths where his dad accepted the sun from Helios, the existence of other gods wasn't too world shattering in that regards, but not exactly at the same time like this was so casually being shown.
Alex, Magnus, and Jason sat right there though. So plainly Not Greek even before Rachel had confirmed it. A Roman god casually popping up wasn't the wildest thing he'd heard over the past few days.
"You must understand, the minor gods like Janus have always been frustrated by the small parts they play in the universe. Some, I fear, have little love for Olympus, and could easily be swayed to support the rise of my father."
"Your father?" I said. "Oh, right."
I'd forgotten that Kronos was Hera's dad, too, along with being the father to Zeus, Poseidon, and all the eldest Olympians. I guess that made Kronos my grandfather, but that thought was so weird I put it out of my mind.
"And I wish it would stop coming back!" Percy groaned, looking likely to rip his ear off if people didn't quit trying to name every branch of his family tree!
"We must watch the minor gods," Hera said. "Janus. Hecate. Morpheus. They give lip service to Olympus, and yet—"
"That's where Dionysus went," I remembered. "He was checking on the minor gods."
"Indeed." Hera stared at the fading mosaics of the Olympians.
"I will never get over the sheer audacity of you interrupting them," Will admitted.
"And yet here I sit, audaciting away," Percy shrugged. Magnus looked in physical pain that's not how that word worked.
"You see, in times of trouble, even gods can lose faith. They start putting their trust in the wrong things. They stop looking at the big picture and start being selfish. But I'm the goddess of marriage, you see. I'm used to perseverance. You have to rise above the squabbling and chaos, and keep believing. You have to always keep your goals in mind."
"What are your goals?" Annabeth asked.
"The perfect question at this time," Jason nodded without surprise.
"It's like she should be leading this quest or something," Percy nodded very seriously in agreement.
She smiled. "To keep my family, the Olympians, together, of course.
"Sounds like, the right answer," Alex said suspiciously, but then, he seemed automatically suspicious of everything.
At the moment, the best way I can do that is by helping you. Zeus does not allow me to interfere much, I am afraid. But once every century or so, for a quest I care deeply about, he allows me to grant a wish."
"A wish?"
"If you don't say world peace I'm going to have to revoke my friendship card with you," Magnus said. "That's like, The obvious answer!" He pulled out an imaginary card from his pocket and waved it around threateningly.
"Um, I'm pretty sure it has to be a wish she could do?" Percy said with a nervous smile like he thought he was serious. "I don't think the gods can actually do that without taking away free will, or something."
"Hmph, passable," Magnus agreed, stuffing the imaginary card back in his pocket.
"Besides, it would be Annabeth to ask," Alex reminded him in exasperation. "I have high hopes she'll come up with something good." His tone was almost threatening, like Annabeth better live up to those expectations. They weren't sure what would happen if she didn't.
"Before you ask it, let me give you some advice, which I can do for free.
"The day we can't give free advice is the day I lose faith in everything," Will said with an awkward smile.
"I'll make a mental list of how not to start the apocalypse," Nico grinned.
I know you seek Daedalus. His Labyrinth is as much a mystery to me as it is to you.
"Well that's, the opposite of encouraging," Magnus frowned.
"I'm sure it wouldn't help if she cheered and promised she wouldn't be any real help," Percy huffed.
But if you want to know his fate, I would visit my son Hephaestus at his forge. Daedalus was a great inventor, a mortal after Hephaestus's heart. There has never been a mortal Hephaestus admired more. If anyone would have kept up with Daedalus and could tell you his fate, it is Hephaestus."
Magnus blushed neon red as an awkward question came to mind.
Alex had no such reserves as she spat out an imaginary drink and shouted, "Wait, did Hephaestus and Daedalus do it? Or does she mean Daedalus is a child of Hephaestus? Or both?"
"A male god can have a child with a male mortal in the same way as Athena has brain children," Thalia agreed, grateful her answer surprised Magnus enough his gray eyes looked likely to never stop blinking at the implication. Alex was still staring at her for the other part of that question, weirdly as unphased by the answer as he was by everything that went on in here, but gratefully didn't pursue Thalia for more except for a strange smile.
"But how do we get there?" Annabeth asked. "That's my wish. I want a way to navigate the Labyrinth."
Alex and Jason both groaned at Annabeth.
"She did something I'd tell you was to impulsive," Jason huffed. "She could have asked a lot more questions!"
"And she should have been a lot more specific! Like asking for that string thing in her hand!" Alex huffed.
Percy didn't much like them criticizing her when she wasn't here, and he was still far more worried about Janus trying to terrify her than whatever Hera had done to let himself be distracted arguing with them.
"Cut her some slack guys, she's stressed up to her ears and won't always make the most rational decision every moment," Thalia did anyways with plenty of robustness.
Hera looked disappointed.
"Because she should have asked for world peace," Alex muttered under his breath to agree with Magnus, which he at least snickered in surprise over.
"So be it. You wish for something, however, that you have already been given."
"Oh come on," all seven of them yelped in surprise at that. In what world had that answer been laid out?! Now this goddess was just messing with them and calling it help!
"I don't understand."
"The means is already within your grasp." She looked at me. "Percy knows the answer."
"I do?" Percy managed to say at the same time as the book.
"He does?" The others all asked dubiously.
"You wouldn't hold out on that kind of information on Annabeth though," Magnus scoffed at once. "Let alone heard it and not, um, mentally, reported it?" Why was it suddenly so weird to describe what they were listening to?
"Glad you don't all think I'm keeping a hidden secret copy up here," Percy said with only a touch of relief as he tapped his temple. He kind of wished someone would call him an idiot again and get to the answer faster. Even Thalia looked dubious though why Hera thought he'd already been given the answer. The only link she could draw was their brief conversation that Rachel could see through the mist last winter, and even then, Percy yet had knowledge that was Ariadne's true ability, so she called bull on Hera's 'help' too.
"But that's not fair," Annabeth said. "You're not telling me what it is!"
"There is nothing stopping her from just, saying it! Make it clear as freaking day down there," Will agreed, looking personally hurt Hera seemed to be going out of her way to make this difficult after she'd just offered endless help.
Nico's touch of jealousy vanished at least. Turns out even if a god had cared enough to try helping him out of there, it probably wouldn't have done him any more good.
Hera shook her head. "Getting something and having the wits to use it...those are two different things. I'm sure your mother Athena would agree."
"Oh great, so the best advice we got out of this is be cryptic, thanks," Jason groaned with his hand pressed against his stomach like he was going to be sick.
He was sick. Of these Greek gods never making any sense. Why would Juno act like she'd done anything of value right now?!
The room rumbled like distant thunder. Hera stood. "That would be my cue. Zeus grows impatient. Think on what I have said, Annabeth. Seek out Hephaestus. You will have to pass through the ranch, I imagine.
Alex's mind flashed back to that Triple G Ranch that had been mentioned that apparently supplied scorpions Quintus had seemed so fond of. He didn't really believe in coincidences.
But keep going.
Nico's heart quivered at that possibility. If Percy had never shown up, gods knew what could have happened. Maybe he would have murdered Daedalus, who knew what Geryon would have done to him.
But then, why had Percy shown up there? This seemed like actual useful advice he couldn't imagine them ignoring for any reason.
And use all the means at your disposal, however common they may seem."
"Is a toothbrush going to come in handy on this quest?" Percy grouched. "Is she saying we should start tossing our extra pair of socks around to get results!"
"Not exactly advice I thought a motherly goddess would give," Magnus agreed with his disdain. He'd hoped a godly symbolic representation of marriage would have been a little more, loving. Aphrodite hadn't fit the right bill either. How was it possible none of these gods seemed more maternal with all the kids and family they had running around?
She pointed toward the two doors and they melted away, revealing twin corridors, open and dark. "One last thing, Annabeth. I have postponed your day of choice, I have not prevented it. Soon, as Janus said, you will have to make a decision. Farewell!"
She waved a hand and turned into white smoke.
Percy scowled and fought the urge to kick his chair in frustration. He'd probably kick it through the wall and cause all of his friend's death. That thought was the only thing restraining him, but he still cussed a few choice words he knew Hera would at least want to escape from.
So did the food, just as Tyson chomped down on a sandwich that turned to mist in his mouth.
"Now that was just rude," Alex looked ready to go and personally make him another sandwich just to make up for that.
"I bet you guys are under Detroit or something, can't have anything there unless it's nailed down," Thalia said in something of a mild mannered tone just because she didn't like seeing everybody stressed out and scowling under her care.
Percy gave her a begrudging laugh and a reluctant smile. "At least I didn't come away from this one with another immortal enemy?"
"There's the bright side!" Will agreed cheerfully.
The fountain trickled to a stop. The mosaic walls dimmed and turned grungy and faded again. The room was no longer any place you'd want to have a picnic.
Annabeth stamped her foot. "What sort of help was that? 'Here, have a sandwich. Make a wish. Oops, I can't help you!' Poof!"
"Poof," Tyson agreed sadly, looking at his empty plate.
"Sounds like you made a wish with a genie," Magnus frowned.
"And it was just one wish! You guys need a contract or a lawyer or something next time you run into one of them," Jason agreed.
"Now if she'd offered us three wishes, I bet at least you'd stop complaining," Percy laughed at him.
"I'm withholding judgment," Jason shrugged.
"Well," Grover sighed, "she said Percy knows the answer. That's something."
They all looked at me.
"But I don't," I said. "I don't know what she was talking about."
Annabeth sighed. "All right. Then we'll just keep going."
"Which way?" I asked. I really wanted to ask what Hera had meant about the choice Annabeth needed to make. But then Grove and Tyson both tensed. They stood up together like they'd rehearsed it. "Left," they both said.
Alex looked very torn now if he wanted to go down the right side just to get a peak of what had made Grover and Tyson agree on something. Magnus gripped his hands together, trying not to imagine Alex's hand in his as they ran for their life.
Annabeth frowned. "How can you be sure?"
"Because something is coming from the right," Grover said.
"Something big," Tyson agreed. "In a hurry."
"Left is sounding pretty good," I decided. Together we plunged into the dark corridor.
"Finished," Will said in a sing-song voice like they weren't about to start running for their life. Good for him, he knew they were all alive.
Jason exchanged an uneasy look with Thalia and Percy before he could get up and get the book. There really weren't enough breaks in the world from this to cover how much time they felt like they needed to process before the next awful thing leapt out of the shadows.

okay but timeline-wise jason is 2 when he’s left at The Wolf House and taken in by Lupa who, and i quote, “found him and tested him on his first night there, to see if he would be a pup or food. She took him under her wing, training him, protecting him and nurturing him, but he couldn't show weakness around her or else he would be torn to shreds”
also, because he’s 16 in toa and we know he spent 12 years in the legion, he had to have joined a literal military camp at about FOUR FUCKING YEARS OLD. AFTER BEING TRAINED BY WOLVES FOR LIKE TWO YEARS. WHAT THE FUCK
honestly i’m just surprised jason didn’t turn out to be wayyy more fucked up.
like he literally never got to enjoy his childhood except maybe his first like 1 1/2 years with Thalia and his mom (though his mom was kinda mentally unstable at that point) which he barely remembers. and even at camp jupiter he was always expected to lead and was treated differently for being the son of jupiter

Bonjour ;) so you mentioned in your analysis of Nico & Apollo’s relationship that there’s reason to believe Apollo and Artemis knew about Nico and Bianca being Hades’ children right from the start and… I was wondering if you’d be willing to elaborate 👀
"I was wondering if you'd be willing to elaborate" says the person who listens to me talk their ear off about this and various other theories in the toa discord all the time ahaha. Of course I'm willing to elaborate, I just gotta get my thoughts into some sort of conceivable order here because there is. A Lot. This is, as always with my theory essays, quite long.
So, I'm just gonna broadly title this the Twin Archers and the di Angelos, because that's as narrowed down as this is gonna get, and we will be having some side appearances from Thalia as well because she's not unrelated to this whole thing, either.
So, what is my theory? In a nutshell, it is that Apollo and Artemis know who Bianca and Nico's father is right from the start, but there's a lot of nuance to this. There's a few places I could start this, but I'll begin with the emergence of the di Angelos from the Lotus Casino (we'll go back in time a little later, because the 1930s will be relevant!).
But first, before we even get as far as the di Angelos on the scene at all, I want to talk about the Great Prophecy and Big Three Kids - specifically Big Three Daughters. I did briefly go over this in the Nico&Apollo post I made a while back, but this time I'll go more in depth. The great prophecy explicitly states a half-blood of the eldest gods, shall reach sixteen against all odds. Now, while this could literally mean about half the pantheon (Aphrodite is stated in HOO to be older than the Big Three, Hestia, Demeter and Hera are also the same generation as their brothers - and Demeter has demigod children), for presumably reasons only Apollo has any hope of understanding, this is known to be specifically referencing a Big Three Kid. This means Big Three Kids basically have a lovely prophecy about death hanging over their heads, and we know Apollo and Artemis don't like demigods dying (their domains are literally about protecting children, it goes against who they are to let kids die no matter what lies Apollo tried to get us to believe at the start of TOA).
Obviously, the Oath is in place to stop this happening, but firstly I don't think anyone believed the rather promiscuous Zeus or Poseidon was ever going to be able to keep that for eternity, even if Hades might, and secondly, it's a Great Prophecy. At some point, it's coming true, whether they like it or not, which means at some point there will be some more Big Three Kids around.
Quite frankly, the sons of the Big Three are straight out of luck. They're either going to die young, or they're going to turn sixteen and, according to the prophecy, die then. There's very little that Apollo or Artemis can do to help the sons (although Apollo clearly tries - see fsinger's own essay on how Apollo is responsible for demigod dreams, especially Percy's). Artemis even says this:
"Bianca, this is crazy," I said. "What about your brother? Nico can't be a Hunter." "Certainly not," Artemis agreed. "He will go to camp. Unfortunately, that's the best boys can do."
It's phrased as being derogatory (not helped by Percy taking it that way), but taking away the anti-boy bias and reading it as a statement of fact - the safest place for boys is Camp Half-Blood, while girls have the option of functional immortality, if they want to take it.
The daughters, however... that's another kettle of fish entirely. Daughters have an opt-out clause, and it's called joining the Hunters of Artemis. As we see with Thalia, this stops their aging process for the purposes of the prophecy, neatly keeping them alive and also skipping the prophecy.
Looking at it this way, suddenly the Hunt's attempts to recruit Thalia back before she reached CHB, despite her having the sorts of attachments that frankly make her unsuitable to be a Hunter (her close relationship with Luke) and would normally mean she was never on their radar, makes sense - if Thalia joins the Hunt, she escapes the prophecy (which she eventually does).
"The Hunters tried to recruit you," I guessed. Her eyes got dangerously bright. I thought she was going to zap me out of the Mercedes, but she just sighed. I almost joined them," she admitted. "Luke, Annabeth, and I ran into them once, and Zoe tried to convince me. She almost did, but…" "But?" Thalia's fingers gripped the wheel. "I would've had to leave Luke."
Note that Artemis specifically says about her Hunters being before they 'go astray' aka get boy-obsessed.
"I could appear as a grown woman, or a blazing fire, or anything else I want, but this is what I prefer. This is the average age of my Hunters, and all young maidens for whom I am patron, before they go astray." "Go astray?" I asked. "Grow up. Become smitten with boys. Become silly, preoccupied, insecure. Forget themselves."
This being Artemis' reasoning behind her recruitment drive of Thalia also explains why she's so happy to accept Thalia into the Hunt at the end of TTC, despite Thalia's reasoning being very clearly the selfish need to escape the prophecy. Yes, there's the Luke backdrop to it, too, but Thalia is not subtle about her reasoning, and this is the sort of self-centredness that ordinarily would not fly with Artemis, because Thalia is using the Hunt for her own gain.
"Father," she said. "I will not turn sixteen tomorrow. I will never turn sixteen. I won't let this prophecy be mine. I stand with my sister Artemis. Kronos will never tempt me again."
She explicitly says she refuses to be the child of prophecy and wants to stop aging, and yet Artemis still welcomes her in with open arms.
So, with one Big Three Daughter out of the way, let's talk about the other one. Bianca di Angelo, who is on Artemis' radar for at least a while before she introduces herself.
How do we know this? Firstly, the Hunters have been hanging around the general vicinity for a while - they make gentle advances towards Annabeth (I say gentle because Annabeth only had a pamphlet and clearly hadn't either been snapped up instantly or pressured so much she was turned off the idea like Thalia was) - and they are very quick to show up once Dr Thorn makes his move. Fast enough, actually, that there's some confusion from the characters about how they happened to be there in time (Grover ends up suggesting it was because they were trailing Annabeth, but that doesn't feel like a solid reason for them to be in the area when Annabeth clearly isn't a priority of theirs).
Secondly, there's this little exchange between Artemis and Nico:
Artemis considered the boy. "Perhaps you can show Grover how to play that card game you enjoy. I'm sure Grover would be happy to entertain you for a while… as a favor to me?"
If she's literally just met Nico, how does she know it's a card game? Yes, he's been gushing at her about it, but he never mentions cards (in fact, from the way he describes it with movement and stuff, it sounds more like a board game than anything else), yet Artemis knows exactly what it is. Mythomagic doesn't seem like the sort of thing that'd really be on her radar, though.
Other, less explicit hints include the implication that they haven't been attacked all year, but were attacked on the streets before that, "last summer".
Bianca di Angelo shivered. "That explains… Nico, you remember last summer, those guys who tried to attack us in the alley in DC?" "And that bus driver," Nico said. "The one with the ram's horns. I told you that was real."
Even Dr Thorn couldn't pick them out until the other demigods appeared and started showing interest in them, despite being powerful (and them also having a powerful scent), but before they were in the school, things were hunting them down pretty easily (although failing to do any actual damage, it seems). There's an implication there that they were being somehow shielded while at the school, and while Hades would be the obvious answer... if that was the case, why wasn't he shielding them on the streets?
(Remember that Artemis is the protector of young maidens and Apollo is the protector of the young.)
Even the fact that Artemis instructs the Hunters to get Nico's stuff as well as Bianca's, despite the Hunters under Zoe being very anti-boy and wanting nothing to do with any of them, implies that she, at least, is remembering Nico's existence.
Then we have the recruitment drive from Artemis and Zoe, which is really very heavy-handed. Artemis intentionally and immediately separates Bianca from the others before they can start extolling Camp Half-Blood to her and manipulates a confused and upset Bianca into joining the Hunt. It's harsh, not at all fair on any of the characters (Bianca was in no mental position to make that sort of decision, Nico didn't deserve to have his sister torn away from him like that), but the one thing it does for certain is takes Bianca out of the running for the Great Prophecy before any of the rest of the characters realised she was in the running for it at all.
So, that's Artemis' actions making a lot more sense all of a sudden. Now for Apollo.
I went into Apollo's interactions with Nico in great depth in a previous essay so I won't rehash that here. The only part of that that's directly relevant is Apollo's refusal to let Nico drive the chariot, despite Nico being very eager to do so, and yes, the fact that he is a ten year old child is a factor in that, but also Zeus would be super-mad if a son of Hades started controlling the sun chariot (even though the sun chariot is technically Apollo's domain and not Zeus', although we know Zeus doesn't care about that - look at the way he's muscled Apollo completely out of any jurisdiction over CHB, despite Apollo being its patron god, something else I will gladly talk about at some point if there's interest!).
But. Let's look at the whole sun chariot thing, shall we, because Apollo's sheer insistence that Thalia drive also makes a lot more sense under this theory. Yes, on the surface it looks like Apollo being obnoxious and not taking no for an answer the way gods tend to do, but when we look a little deeper (especially with TOA under our belts, where we have a much better understanding of how Apollo works), there's a couple of things that stand out.
Firstly, there are four Big Three Kids in that sun chariot. Four of them, and Zeus wants all of them dead aside from his own daughter (and even Thalia is not safe from Zeus if he decides otherwise... see him throwing the lightning bolt at them later in TTC, presumably as a warning for her to not turn against him in Zeus' typical rule-through-fear method). Quite frankly, Apollo was no doubt absolutely terrified at that many Big Three Kids in the chariot - Zeus has proven in the past that he can and will blast it from the sky if he wants.
"Don't sweat it! Maine to Long Island is a really short trip, and don't worry about what happened to the last kid I trained. You're Zeus's daughter. He's not going to blast you out of the sky."
Apollo even makes a point of this, so we know it was on his mind.
Second, the implication here is that Apollo himself isn't certain the chariot won't be struck if he's the one driving, despite it being his own domain - and considering Zeus' paranoia surrounding Apollo and the fact he's clearly watching for Apollo to do something that makes him seem like he's rebelling (proven by how quickly he slams the blame for the events of HOO straight onto Apollo even though everything he punishes Apollo for, with the exception of talking to Octavian, wasn't Apollo's doing at all), Apollo probably isn't wrong about that. Gathering so many powerful kids into his chariot would have Zeus' paranoia sky-high, so to speak.
So, his solution? Put Thalia in the driving seat. Thalia is a daughter of Zeus, and Zeus always treats his daughters better (see Artemis and Athena vs Apollo), and it also forces Zeus to choose, because if he does blast the sun chariot while Thalia is driving, it clearly looks like it's Thalia he's punishing, not Apollo (or even the other Big Three Kids). It's a clever little bit of manipulation by Apollo, albeit with the downside of Thalia's height phobia (and did Apollo know about that? Honestly, he might have done, and while it does feel unusually cruel of rr!Apollo to do that, when his option is make Thalia face her fear or all the mortals (plus Artemis' Hunters) get killed by Zeus... it's very much the lesser evil).
The Twins' actions during the start of the book are heavily geared towards the protection of the di Angelos - Artemis takes Bianca into her Hunt, while Apollo personally escorts Nico straight to Camp, which is something it's implied very few demigods get (by which I mean any actual godly escort; this is the only known case where they're not just escorted by a satyr). Could this all have been Artemis' planning without Apollo involved? Theoretically I suppose that could be argued, but my personal view is no, no it could not. Firstly, the Twins seem to be in each other's radar a lot, to the point where Artemis striking out alone seems to necessitate her telling Apollo she's going alone:
Artemis grit her teeth. "I need a favor. I have some hunting to do, alone. I need you to take my companions to Camp Half-Blood."
Yes, Apollo says just before this: "What's up? You never call. You never write. I was getting worried!", and seems to roll with it just fine, but this is where some of the TOA characterisation comes into play. Apollo is a pathological liar when the situation calls for it, and as already stated, Zeus is paranoid and has his eye on Apollo - which Apollo knows. He can't admit out loud anywhere that he might actually be planning things with Artemis - also, note that he never says that he hasn't seen her recently. It's implied, but that's how Apollo constructs his best lies, by dancing around the truth (it's not like Artemis needs to call or write if she's seeing him regularly, anyway!). It's more likely that he's talking about the fact that he knows she's planning something but she hasn't shared what - that is what is likely actually worrying him, if the declaration of worry is genuine underneath the façade (add in Artemis' next words that she's going hunting alone and it makes it sound like her not working with Apollo is a rarity).
Secondly, we're never shown her actually calling Apollo; the whole encounter feels less spur-of-the-moment and more planned in advance. Yes, she claims she's summoning a ride from him, but all we're shown is her looking east expectantly, complaining about Apollo being lazy in winter, and knowing that dawn (and therefore her brother) is on the way. No, she hasn't told Apollo what she's up to next, which Apollo makes a point to complain about, but the "get the demigods to camp" part of this seems pre-arranged.
Once Nico is at CHB, he's as safe as he can be, and most importantly, he's on the radar of Chiron, Dionysus, and several demigods. Zeus might have been able to zap him if he was alone and unknown without being caught, but now he's been drawn fully into the demigod world, Nico has been protected from Zeus finishing what he started way back when. (This protection extends even after TTC, when Nico runs off, because Nico spends most of his time either in the Underworld or the Labyrinth, which are both areas outside of Zeus' direct influence, and also because he's getting on the radar of more and more gods. Zeus' window of opportunity to quietly finish off the di Angelos without inciting any major backlash has been slammed shut by the Twins' actions, leaving them in the same tentative security that Percy has.)
So, there's the why of this theory, based on canon. But what about the how?
There are two hows in question here. How #1 is how did Apollo and Artemis know they were Hades' children, and How #2 is how did they know before the rest of the gods (which they must have done in able to get them to safety before Zeus intervened).
I'll start with How #1: How did the Twins know they were Hades' kids?
There are a couple of answers to this question. The first, and most obvious one, is that they recognised them as such on sight. Nico is known to look similar to Hades, and while the likes of Percy can be forgiven for not putting two and two together because he's only met Hades the once, other characters, like the gods, would see the resemblance.
Alternatively, they remembered them from the 1930s/40s. The timeline is somewhat inconsistent on exactly when the di Angelos ended up in the Lotus Casino, and the only concrete information we have is that it was contemporary with WWII, but that's still less than a century and to gods, that's no time at all. Apollo himself tells us in TOA that he has perfect recall, which makes sense being the god of knowledge, so the Twins recognising these children as the same children of Hades who disappeared (at the same time the pythia of Delphi was cursed, no less) is more likely than not. In fact, I'd go as far as to argue that it would make no sense for them not to recognise them.
But, why would they know the di Angelo kids in the first place? It's not like the gods pay attention to demigods prior to their arrival at CHB (and even then, it's only barely), and them being known seems unlikely as a general rule, but there are some key points to recall. First is that they are Big Three Kids. They're more powerful than regular demigods (Grover helpfully tells us this when they're first introduced, even though they still didn't twig until the end of the book about their parentage), and more likely to be on the other gods' radar. Second is the time period - we know that WWII, in Riordanverse, was a war between Big Three Kids, so the gods would be actively looking out for other Big Three Kids, especially children of Hades, as his son (presumably Hitler and other high-ranking associates, although I don't recall him ever being explicitly named, just that a few of Hades' children were leaders of the bad guys) is the antagonist. From the way Hades talks in TLO, it seems like the di Angelo siblings are his only children younger than sixteen at the time:
"When you and your sister were young, it was a bad time to be children of Hades. World War II was brewing. A few of my, ah, other children were leading the losing side. I thought it best to put you two out of harm's way."
They were certainly on Zeus' radar (after all, Zeus is the one who tried to kill them, and did kill Maria), but there's also another god who had to know, and that's Apollo.
"I warned you," a new voice said. Hades turned. A girl in a multicolored dress stood by the smoldering remains of the sofa. She had short black hair and sad eyes. She was no more than twelve. I didn't know her, but she looked strangely familiar. "You dare come here?" Hades growled. "I should blast you to dust!" "You cannot," the girl said. "The power of Delphi protects me." With a chill, I realized I was looking at the Oracle of Delphi, back when she was alive and young. Somehow, seeing her like this was even spookier than seeing her as a mummy. "You've killed the woman I loved!" Hades roared. "Your prophecy brought us to this.'" He loomed over the girl, but she didn't flinch. "Zeus ordained the explosion to destroy the children," she said, "because you defied his will. I had nothing to do with it. And I did warn you to hide them sooner."
While Apollo himself is never mentioned by name in relation to this scene, the pythia of Delphi - his Oracle - makes an appearance, not for the first time, apparently. She went out off her way to warn Hades specifically about protecting Bianca and Nico earlier; there is no feasible way that she could have known about the di Angelos if Apollo didn't (in fact, it wouldn't be out of the question to consider that Apollo saw the danger to the di Angelos and sent her himself, after all we know Apollo doesn't like demigod deaths), which means that Apollo had to know of their existence.
And if Apollo knew, Artemis probably did, too.
So, that's how they knew who the di Angelos were. Now, onto How #2: how did they know before the rest of the gods (or at least, Zeus), when they emerged from the Lotus Casino?
There are two possibilities for this. One is that Apollo happened to see Alecto retrieving them from the sun chariot - in fact, I'd argue that this would have been the case regardless of whether or not option two is also true, because Apollo can see everything from there, and that would give him the exact timing.
Two is that Apollo foresaw their re-emergence. We don't know the exact limits of Apollo's foresight. He doesn't give us any straight answers on that during TOA at all; the closest we get is this, which is also so early on in the narration that the truthfulness of it is somewhat up in the air (I am inclined to believe him because of his knowledge and prophecy domains, but the potential for a lie or exaggeration is certainly there):
Had I been my usual omniscient self, I could have gleaned Meg’s destiny. I could have looked into her soul and seen all I needed to know about her godly parentage, her powers, her motives and secrets.
There's also a lot of hints towards this in TTC, around the sun chariot ride:
Apollo studied me, but he didn't say anything, which I found a little creepy. "Well!" he said at last.
and
He winked at me. "Watch out for those prophecies, Percy. I'll see you soon." "What do you mean?" Instead of answering, he hopped back in the bus. "Later, Thalia," he called. "And, uh, be good!" He gave her a wicked smile, as if he knew something she didn't.
as well as later on in the book:
Apollo chuckled. "Fast enough. Unfortunately, we're running out of time. It's almost sunset. But I imagine we'll get you across a good chunk of America, at least." "But where is Artemis?" His face darkened. "I know a lot, and I see a lot. But even I don't know that. She's… clouded from me. I don't like it."
The implications are there that Apollo really does see a lot, more than I think we could actually properly comprehend as mere mortals who only see the here and now (I know my mind breaks when I try and conceptualise how much Apollo might actually know but hasn't happened yet, or might happen, or might have happened but didn't because there's a degree of fluidity and change in the future because nothing is set in stone until it happens), which means it is well within all likelihood that he saw the di Angelos leaving the Lotus Casino with enough warning to come up with a plan to protect them once they did. Add in the fact that Nico, at least, is intrinsically tied to the Great Prophecy, and it would make a lot of sense for Apollo to see a major point in his life like this one.
And Nico is intrinsically tied. Right from the end of TTC, it's blatant. Percy claimed the prophecy for his own because he refused to pass it on to Nico, in a parallel to Thalia, who blatantly dodged it and tossed the baton straight at Percy.
"I don't need forever," I said. "Just two years. Until I'm sixteen." Annabeth paled. "But, Percy, this means the prophecy might not be about you. It might be about Nico. We have to—" "No," I said. "I choose the prophecy. It will be about me." "Why are you saying that?" she cried. "You want to be responsible for the whole world?" It was the last thing I wanted, but I didn't say that. I knew I had to step up and claim it. "I can't let Nico be in any more danger," I said. "I owe that much to his sister. I… let them both down. I'm not going to let that poor kid suffer any more."
Then, of course, we have the Curse of Achilles, which is what kept Percy alive long enough to make the choice - that was Nico's idea and Nico's doing - and Nico being the one to convince Hades to join the fight to save Olympus. Nico was not the prophecy child, although Annabeth (and Hades, in TLO) is right to say that he could have been, but he still made major decisions and influenced Percy dramatically, which had a direct knock-on effect to the resolution of the prophecy when it happened.
With this in mind, it seems that if there's any character that Apollo would have a front-row seat to the possible destiny (or destinies) of, it's Nico di Angelo.
So, there you have it. That's why I think the Twins knew about the di Angelos' parentage right from the start, and also the logistics behind them knowing in the first place. It puts their canon actions in a whole new, and frankly far more realistic, light when we look at it this way - or at least, I think so.

Hello! I just wanted to know your thoughts of how a role reversal between Nico and Bianca would go? How different would everything in the books be if Nico was the older brother sent on the quest, and Bianca was the younger sister? Would Bianca still join the Hunters? Would Nico be a doting brother or would he follow what the original Bianca did and try to live a little bit of his own life, trusting the camp to watch over Bianca? Would Nico still be a nerd over Mythomagic? Would the siblings both live and someone else becomes the victim of the prophecy? Or would Nico die?
Has anyone written a similar fic?
This is such an intriguing ask, I'm literally having a field day with this.
Let's start on the grounds of their reversed roles: Nico is the older sibling while Bianca is the little sister.
Now, provided that the original ten-year-old Nico is quite enthusiastic and lively, I'm gonna say that this older Nico would be half the same at the start, for the age change is actually just 3 years if I'm not wrong? A twelve-year-old can still be passionate about a card game and generally curious.
But again, he witnessed his mother's death and was most likely made aware of other terrible things surrounding his and his sister's lives. We know little about what Bianca knew in her short time of action, but she seemed cautious and wary enough for me to guess that if it was Nico who was the caring one, he would be skeptical all time and closed off when he needed to. Maybe he would start out as careful and alert at first, and then open up much more when he finds Percy and his friends trustworthy enough.
Would Nico be a doting brother----You can be damn sure he would. We all see how he treats Hazel. And he stood up to a Manticore because he speaks ill to his sister. You can't convince me he wouldn't be ridiculously protective of Bianca.
Sure, I suppose he'd want to live a life for himself too. However, Nico's enthusiasm before Bianca's death for all Mythomagic and Greek gods and such. Camp Half-blood would be literally his heaven. What this older Nico wishes for would be a demigod life safe in the Camp, learning about Gods etc... So no, I don't think he has any reason to leave.
Would Bianca still join the Hunters? Now, this is an interesting question. This is not confirmed but I suspect that Artemis promoted Bianca because she knew her lineage and was trying to prevent her from the prophecy - much like she is doing with Thalia. The invitation remains in place.
For Bianca's part, I suppose she'd be scared. She's just 10 years old, of course she'd be scared to join all the strangers in their weird cult or whatever. And if Nico's any like the original Bianca, this younger Bianca would most likely listen to and seeks advice from him. Then, if we take in Nico's role as one to look out for his younger sister, I don't think he would easily agree to let her leave his sight, joining a bunch of Huntresses to who knows where. Nico is protective of his sisters, I'm sure we could agree on that.
With that being said, I suppose the problem is just which outcome you prefer. Maybe Bianca still wants to live a life of her own. Maybe she can convince her brother. Maybe she fails and stays at Camp Half-Blood. Maybe she fails but joins anyway and it leaves Nico with a mess of questions, worries, guilt and regrets and a rift between them.
Assuming Bianca doesn't join the Hunters. Then there's a chance Nico's picked to be one of the questers, knowing him, I guess he wouldn't turn it down. Moving on to Heaphasteus' junkyard, let's just say I refuse to believe that Nico is reckless enough to pick up the Hades figure for himself despite the warning. He knows better than that. He might pick something else for Bianca and then dies, though. This is more plausible. Otherwise, we'll just have to pick someone else to play the devastating death in the prophecy, then.
Let's assume Bianca still joins the Hunters anyway, is picked by Zoe, and then leaves. Then things would go on pretty the same as canon, though Percy would need more to convince Nico to let him go instead. Bianca's death, a broken promise and Nico's outburst. What comes after is that perhaps Nico could be much colder, stronger and more vicious, for he knows more than ten-year-old Nico and is capable of far more. He'd hardly be manipulated that easily by Minos, the memories might come back sooner and he wouldn’t be tricked by Greryon (or whatever his name is). Percy would have to deal with so much worse than a mere angsty teen.
Nico would still try to summon his sister's ghost, that's for sure. But she doesn't have to tell him about their fatal flaws because he has already known. He resents Percy and blames himself at the same time. He fails to protect his sister, I don't think Nico can ever live peacefully with that thought.
A few other things, his relationship with Hades might change a little. Because now Nico is the older, more mature and supposedly more talented one, Hades wouldn't prefer he dies in place of Bianca, now would he? But her death creates a rift between them anyway. Maybe Hades lets it slip that "You failed to protect even your own sister!" Maybe they blame each other for her death. The guilts, regrets and sorrows. That's what grief does to you.
Nonetheless, they would soon work it out, I believe.
Regarding the matter of staying in Camp Half-blood, I personally entertain the idea that older Nico is much better at reading people as the result of those years surviving and protecting his sister after Maria’s death. Hence, he is able to see clearer people’s apprehension, how they are wary of him, distrust him and unconsciously or deliberately stay away from him. So in the end, Nico chooses to leave immediately after the Titan War, spare not an effort to befriend any campers.
With Percy, Nico’s crush might just reduce to a mere attraction, since in canon, it’s more like hero worship - and while they’re the same age and there’s a possibility Nico’s aware of his own powers, he wouldn’t be impressed that much. (Btw he’s still worrying for Bianca).
Nico would set things right with Percy sooner - just because he’s older and able to conceive things with less personal feelings than the younger canon. But he still leaves, so there’s that.
For the pleasure of your fanfic request, there’re two I have encountered that approach this idea.
A Different di Angelo by DashingLuna: An AU where it was Nico who went on the quest and died. Percy has to deal with a resentful Bianca.
Death's Reason by Pey119: This is actually a Time Travel AU in which Nico travels back in time to prevent Gaea’s victory. Since Nico is sent back, he is older than Bianca, and, interestingly enough: Percy, too. It started out quite amazing, ngl. Although I had to leave after everything took a sudden turn that has something to do with their pasts and love curses and such, I’d still say it’s quite a thrilling ride. If you’re fine with the work tags, I suggest giving it a chance!

Titan’s Curse But Make It Time Loop: Nico di Angelo Edition
-Okay so I’m at work and not doing much and who wants to actually edit your shit drafts for your actual WIPs so that they’re less bad? No one, that’s who
-So I had an idea: The Titan’s Curse. Also known as the book where people start to die. It sucks to be a demigod in this book--for the first time in the original series, it really does.
-Not everything is fixed, not everyone is saved, and people start to have to make really tough decisions.
-So we fix it. Not by throwing Percy, or Annabeth, or Thalia, or, hell, even Bianca or Grover into the mix.
-Throwing the marginally more grown-up, more trained, and more knowledgeable demigods into the fire, who’d get everyone alive and safe by the third time ‘round? Nah.
-We’re making Nico fix this.
-Because here’s the thing about Nico di Angelo: Sure, he grows up to become a major badass, the Ghost King, so on and so forth. But not yet.
-For now, Nico is baby, a ten-year-old whose experience with any kind of fighting consists of one (1) Capture The Flag game and who’s still half-reliant on Mythomagic to explain what the fuck is happening.
-He’s also got the worst knowledge makeup possible! He knows he’s a son of Hades, which is bad, he knows to stick monsters with the pointy end of swords but nothing else, he knows that Percy Jackson and Thalia Grace are Very Big Deals (But also doesn’t know why beyond parents), and he’s, at best, vaguely aware that there’s some kind of bad prophecy hanging around.
-Also by the end of the book, he’s just been told his last immediate family who isn’t Hades is dead in one of the worst ways possible, and he--pretty irrationally IMO, but Nico’s a kid who has been through a lot recently, so we’re not holding that against him--blames Percy Jackson.
-Literally, you probably can’t pick an angstier or worse choice to run through the time travel trope. I love it.
-We’re making this kid save Bianca’s life via time loop, which happens due to. . .hmm, we’ll say the Fates did it.
-So, Loop 0 = Canon, only at the end of the day on December 21st, after the conversation with Percy, Nico falls asleep only gods know where only to wake up the day he meets Percy Jackson:
Loop 1:
-Nico doesn’t actually change anything meaningful at first.
-Spends most of it shellshocked and not unconvinced the last week (For him, anyway) wasn’t a horrible nightmare; shellshocked and staring at Percy Jackson, anyway.
-(Percy’s wondering what’s up with the silent kid his sister had talked up as a cheerful chatterbox)
-It’s only when Bianca agrees to join the quest for Artemis that he starts kicking up a fuss; demanding to go, screaming that she can’t leave him even more, not again.
-(Bianca hesitates; briefly, enough to remind Nico that she loves him. But she’s not their mother, and she needs this)
-Bianca still dies. Percy comes back pale and guilty. Nico doesn’t yell at him when he returns--he already knows. He accepts the Hades figurine so that he can throw it into the lake.
-He slinks off back into Cabin Eleven and falls asleep, hoping desperately that he gets a third chance.
Loop 2:
-He does.
Loop 3:
-After a very painful death at the hands of Dr. Thorn, Nico, generally being a straightforward person at this stage of life, takes the obvious path this time around: He tries to tell Bianca--who brushes it off as a dream.
-Annabeth still goes over the cliff when Nico takes the initiative of attaching himself and his sister to Percy Jackson and Thalia Grace at the dance. He tries to tell Percy and Thalia when Bianca still joins the Hunt, promising Nico that whatever he saw, she’ll be extra careful.
-(Bianca’s fearful of what Nico's saying, and thinks that if these sworn sisters can’t keep her safe, who can?)
-Artemis gives Nico a speculative look but agrees when he begs her to protect Bianca at all costs.
-He doesn’t get on the quest. Being a reasonable demigod of questionable parentage, he sneaks out of camp.
-He gets caught, because despite being aware of his awesome new powers, he doesn’t know how to use them, and is still a ten-year-old who can barely hold a sword the right way.
-He gives Percy the puppy dog eyes and shows off said awesome new powers. Percy forces him back.
-Nico follows him.
-Repeat until Percy dies saving Nico from the Nemean Lion in Washington, DC.
-Nico can’t find it in himself to be terribly sad--especially when he doesn’t make it much longer.
Loop 4:
-He’s really stuck like this, huh?
-Oh, Di Immortales.
-(Before Percy gets his chest ripped to shreds by a lion and Nico meets skeleton cats, he learned how to hold a sword properly and curse fluently in Greek. Percy probably only meant to teach him one of those things)
-In unrelated news: Having a big crush on a guy who thinks he’s only known you for a couple hours? Terrible.
-Trying to hate the guy who let your sister die when he’s that stupid and nice? Even worse.
-That stupid lion.
Loop 5, 6, 7, 8, 9:
-Nico repeats: That stupid lion.
-Somewhere in Loop 7 he starts to steal supplies out of the camp store when he follows Percy following the quest.
-They forcefeed the lion enough trail mix and frozen ice cream in Loop 9 that they don’t die this time.
-At least until someone called the General shows up and Nico’s dead before he can raise his sword.
Loop 10:
-Nico wakes up in his and Bianca’s room in Westover and starts crying. Bianca tells the headmaster they’re both sick and Nico lets her hold him all day.
-They fall asleep and Nico swears he won’t let her die again.
Loop 11, 12, 13:
-He wakes up and he still can’t get out of bed without feeling that blade cutting between his ribs, burning like it’s on fire.
-Gods, he’s so sorry, Bianca. Dispiace tanto.
Loop 14:
-He can get up without feeling like he’s about to die again. Bianca fusses but assumes it was just a bad dream.
-Nico is caught stealing and can’t follow Percy until it’s too late.
-Everyone assumes this means he’s a son of Hermes, however, and Nico can’t correct them without opening his mouth and letting the sobbing laughter out.
-Figuring he’s about to get another chance next round anyway, he takes Travis and Connor Stoll up on their offer to learn a thing or two so that he doesn’t get Cabin Eleven slapped with kitchen duty from now until Doomsday.
-He likes the Stolls. He spent most of the time, pre-looping, actively avoiding everyone at camp as he waited for Bianca and Percy to come back, but they’re not that bad.
-Percy comes back with the figurine and no sister and Nico remembers why he’s stuck.
Loop 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23:
-After Loop 12 and being killed in Washington DC again, Nico realizes: He needs to learn how to fight.
-Unless he gets killed early or refuses to leave Westover, the loop resets after seven days. So, he has seven days to train each time.
-He gets to camp, finds the arena, and meets Clarisse La Rue. He demands she teach him how to kill monsters.
-She laughs, and tells him that attitude in his size will make monsters easy to kill, they’ll laugh so hard.
-Clarisse teaches him how to swing a sword each time--but only after mocking his unamused face.
-Somehow, Percy coming back with news of Bianca’s death only hurts more each time.
Loop 24:
-Nico wakes up before Bianca this time. He looks over at her bed and knows. He’s got to try this time.
-It’s disturbingly easy making friends with Percy Jackson after the last loops.
-Bessie’s new. Cute, but new.
-Nico wonders just how much he’s missed in the past--he thinks of Annabeth Chase, and hopes she hasn’t been dying each time.
-Percy doesn’t even argue when Nico shows up in the stables with a bag slung over his shoulder, and the sword he’s been stealing out of the shed strapped to his hip.
-Nico suggests the ice cream--again--to Percy in DC before
-Nico might be getting the hang of this.
Loop 25:
-Nico is not getting the hang of this.
-Zoë Nightshade’s refusal to accept Percy and Nico on the quest--violating a prophecy, and gods, Nico’s curious if that prophecy ever mentioned this--has so far gotten them attacked and killed by spartoi once.
-And again. As Nico bleeds out on the floor, he watches a panicked blond man--a demigod--plead for mercy.
-Isn’t he on the other side?
Loop 26:
-His name is Luke Castellan and he apparently wants the gods dead.
-Nico can relate at this point.
-The General is Atlas, and Nico knows enough about Greek mythology, real and wrong, at this point to know that is bad.
Loop 27:
-Twenty-six tries, but they finally make it out of DC. Threatening the questers with Atlas killing them all is more than enough.
-For the first time, Nico doesn’t know what happens next. He glues himself to Bianca’s side and glares at anything suspicious.
-With help that Percy refuses to name, even when Nico tries his hardest, they go to New Mexico.
-There’s a boar and it’s so close, they make it to what the others are calling “the junkyard of the gods”.
-Nico sees the Hades figurine on the ground.
-Bianca grins in delight and picks it up, calling for him.
-He can’t help it.
-Nico starts screaming.
Loop 28:
-His sister’s murderer was never Percy Jackson.
-His sister’s murderer was a force of mechanics that makes Nico fully understand, for the first time, what the gods are, beyond stats on a card.
-Talos.
-Nico is going to destroy him.
Loop 29:
-She dies.
Loop 30:
-Again.
Loop 31:
-Again.
-Loop 32, 33, 34, 3536373839FortyFo r t y O n e--:
-Again. Again. Again. Again again againagainagainagainAGAIN--
Loop 42:
-Nico gets out of bed. He finds Percy Jackson at the dance, hugs him, and tells him he’s sorry.
-Nico walks outside and waits for Dr. Thorn in the snow. He can feel the shadows curling at the edge of the wood like a sixth sense, now. Waiting for him to summon the restless dead out of them.
-So many attempts to save his sister, ranging from sacrificing himself to sacrificing Percy--not that Percy needs the push, Nico has found--to any and all members of the quest.
-She dies. Always, always dies. Whatever Nico does, that junkyard is full of the death of Bianca di Angelo.
-He tried avoiding it. Once. Loop 33. Nico threw such a fit he’s surprised he wasn’t sent back to Camp Half-Blood by the Hunters, but it kept them out of the junkyard.
-He tries not to remember how little was left of his sister’s body by the monsters that time.
-Son of Hades. After all this time, Nico’s beginning to wonder if this is what it means. Death and death and death.
-Dr. Thorn walks outside, and Nico can feel a ghoulish grin crossing his face that has no place on a ten-year-old.
-One of them is going to die, this loop. And Nico will not go to New Mexico.
Loop 43:
-Nico wonders if there was a past life of his he needs to remember. Who could he have made this angry?
-He lies to Bianca and they stay in Westover again this time. Better than death, anyway.
Loop 44:
-Nico tries a different tack this time. A more roundabout way of things.
-He takes Bianca and throws the two of them in the way of the battle with the manticore.
-After all this time, he still doesn’t know much about Annabeth Chase. She gets kidnapped and returned safely to Percy every time, to the best of his knowledge.
-Nico dies holding up the sky, but at least Bianca lives, under the protection of Artemis.
Loop 45:
-Nico looks in the mirror and studies the new grey streak with fascination. And, maybe, some hope.
-Things can change.
Loop 46, 47, 48, 49, 50:
-Nico gets kidnapped a few times. Once, he’s killed in a rage by a Titan with horns, but it’s quick. Mostly, he holds up the sky to get Artemis out.
-She looks at him strangely each time and Nico wonders if she can see what he’s done.
Loop 51:
-They figure out he’s a son of Hades. They offer him Olympus. Olympus and Bessie--the Ophiotaurus, rather.
-Nico says no.
Loop 52:
-Nico says yes.
Loop 53:
-Being on the verge of overthrowing the gods and keeping everyone he’s grown to care for--in the case of several Hunters, against his will; in Percy Jackson’s case, Nico loves him as much as he hates him at this point--doesn’t do much, apparently.
-Nico stays in Westover again. He resists the urge to tell Bianca that would-be destroyers of Olympus don’t need to brush their hair, whatever she says.
Loop 54:
-Nico goes over the edge of the cliff again, but with Percy Jackson.
-This isn’t the first time; in Loop 46, Percy had taken the sky for both the sake of Artemis and Nico until it killed him.
-What’s different, is Nico’s in the middle of what’s become the usual panic attack when he’s about to die for the hundredth time, and his powers react.
-Percy holds him close and calls him cousin. Tells him he’ll never leave Nico.
-You have no idea, Nico whispers. You can’t leave me.
-You think I want to? Percy whispers back. You’re not alone, Nico.
-Nico’s sobbing sounds like laughter.
Loop 55:
-Nico tells Percy the truth for the third time. This is the first time he hasn’t told Bianca first.
-They’ve just found the Erymanthian Boar, Thalia’s told Nico his goth needs work--whatever that means--and Nico’s bracing himself for the junkyard again.
-Getting kidnapped by the Titans really gets old after a while.
-He still has the grey streak, and no number of excuses will fully soothe his sister, but the Hunt’s a good distraction from it.
-Nico doesn’t blame Bianca anymore for it. He thinks.
-Nearly a year into this loop and Nico’s finding it hard to blame anyone for much of anything, anymore. Especially when he sees what she’s faced. Again. And again.
-For now, this time, Percy Jackson is staring at Nico with wide eyes at what Nico’s told him--through these loops, Nico’s starting to wonder if he now knows more about Percy than Percy’s own best friends--and says he believes him.
-Once, Nico would’ve exploded from joy. Now, he just sighs and nods.
-Percy tells him how to condense the conversation for the next loop. He advises Nico to research Talos, “like Annabeth would.”
-He advises Nico to warn Percy’s next loop self about Annabeth’s kidnapping. Nico wonders if he’s gone insane that he’s considering it.
-Bianca dies.
Loop 56:
-Nico makes the executive decision this time to try and befriend Annabeth Chase. As such, he takes Percy’s advice.
Loop 57:
-It takes him two tries to befriend Annabeth Chase and learn about Talos.
Loop 58:
-Three times.
-But the nail. The nail in the ankle of Talos.
Loop 59:
-He hangs back at camp again this time and meets Charles Beckendorf, head of Cabin Nine, and son of Hephaestus.
-Nico figures that short of finding the god himself and committing temporary suicide--not that it hasn’t crossed Nico’s mind--his son will have to do.
-(He’s tried his hand at summoning ghosts, but Daedalus refuses to show, for some reason)
-Beckendorf frowns and tells Nico he would have to see Talos himself.
-Nico hadn’t realized just how much cursing he had picked up off of Percy and Thalia until that moment.
Loop 60:
-Nico knows what the prophecy says. One shall be lost in the land without rain.
-He knows it’s why he’s been failing so much.
-The trouble is, he no longer cares.
Loop 61:
-It took him a try, but he gets Beckendorf on the quest, prepared to defeat the Talos prototype.
Loop 62:
-Strike that, two tries.
-Nico really hates the Nemean Lion.
Loop 63, 64:
-Nico has solved half a problem: How to defeat Talos without putting someone inside the robot.
-The other half of the problem is now that they are all electrocuted by a dying automaton for their efforts.
Loop 65:
-Beckendorf’s crush--girlfriend? crush, they’re both insisting--Silena Beauregard comes along this time. Nico won’t complain over the extra manpower, even if he’s positive that eight campers and Hunters are patent overkill for one quest.
-Silena pulls Bianca out of the wreckage. Nico’s heart stops.
-Silena’s crying when she mentions that if they had been a bit earlier, she could have been revived.
-Nico wonders if Thalia’s going to stab him as he starts whooping. And takes notes about where Talos falls.
Loop 66:

-Bianca.
-I found you, he sobs. I found you.
-Gods damn the Hoover Dam.
Loop 68:
-And again.
-Despite having the distinct inkling at this point that he doesn’t much like like girls, Nico could kiss Silena Beauregard and Thalia Grace when they manage to revive his sister each time.
-She’s shaky and leaning on him and was dead, he could see her soul floating away--
-But she’s there.
-Nico refuses to let his sister out of the sight at the Hoover Dam and Percy befriends the Naiads this time.
-At least, until the Titans--who Nico made the very big mistake of taunting at DC--sends monsters he can’t control.
Loop 69, 70, 71, 72, 73:
-They keep dying in various combinations at the Hoover Dam now that Nico’s figured out how to save Bianca.
-At least, until he gets separated from Percy in Loop 73 and he meets a redheaded girl with a penchant for calling Nico pint-size.
-Athena dislikes Percy, Nico, Bianca, and Thalia in equal measure. Having learned of the Great Prophecy in Loop 16 and Percy’s mooning over Annabeth in. . .well, every loop, Nico can’t quite blame her.
Loop 74:
-Her name is Rachel Elizabeth Dare and Nico likes her. She takes none of their shit and if it weren’t for the fact that they already have eight people on the quest, he’d want to take her along.
-Bianca gets in a fight with the Old Man of the Sea. Thalia electrocutes him when he throws Bianca in the bay.
Loop 75:
-Nico wakes up in Westover with the distinct feeling that he was drowned on dry land.
-He stays in bed shivering, that day.
Loop 76:
-Atlas is the father of Zoë Nightshade. Nico learned this around Loop 50. He had realized around five loops ago that this probably meant she was going to die “by a parent’s hand.”
-He hadn’t realized that it was going to hurt to watch.
Loop 77, 78, 79, 80, 81:
-Now that he’s figured things out to about San Francisco, it seems the world is out to get him. The number of fights or mistakes that he either makes himself or has to head off are ridiculous.
Loop 82:
-Nico is so very tired. And wishes he felt ten years old again.
Loop 83:
-If Thalia gets in one more fight with Nereus, Nico's going to walk into the sea.
Loop 84:
-He wanders off, in this one. Grover had been killed in Hoover Dam, so Nico’s waiting for the reset at this point.
-In the meantime, Nico figures there are worse things to do than enjoy a good afternoon in San Francisco. He even meets a boy in a purple shirt.
-His name is Jason and he has hair like the sun.
-If he ever fixes this, Nico wants to find him.
Loop 85:
-Nico’s not fast enough in the junkyard.
-In San Francisco, he tries to find the ugliest, biggest trouble he can find.
-He finds a pair of teenagers in armor who yell Latin at him instead.
Loop 86:
-There’s a dragon that will attack them in the Garden of the Hesperides if they make it angry enough and Nico is so tired.
Loop 87:
- Zoë Nightshade is dead. They’ve won.
-Funny definition of “win”, considering they’ve all almost died this loop about a dozen times each, and Nico can’t explain why he’s crying on the body of a Hunter he only met a week ago, in their eyes.
-She hates him, some loops. More loops, she looks at him with ghosts of old grief in her eyes and hands him a knife.
-The gods execute Bessie, and then, Nico watches as his father turns to him and Bianca with sorrowful eyes.
-Nico should’ve figured, after almost ninety loops.
Loop 88:
-Luke offers one of them the entrails of Bessie again.
-Nico takes them.
Loop 89:
-For all the good it does. Nico wakes up as he does every time now: Powerless, in bed, and with only a grey streak to show for his efforts.
Loop 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98:
-Nico doesn’t know how to save Zoë Nightshade. Bianca, he could trick and fight his way into it. Beckendorf and Silena and Percy and a loophole in lost could save his sister.
-Her, she just. . .dies. Sometimes in DC, sometimes in San Francisco, sometimes on the hills of Mt. Tamalpais. Always at the hands of Atlas.
-Always, being murdered by her father.
-It’s not as gutting as watching his sister die, but it aches more in his chest, somehow.
Loop 99:
-He sticks close to Zoë this time. Same as he’s done with Percy, Annabeth, his sister, Thalia, and Grover, time and time again. But not her, Nico is realizing. Not the clinging he’s achieving now.
-Hoping for. . .something.
-He knows better than to tell the immortal Lieutenant of Artemis the whole truth. The loneliness is enough.
-She’s less frosty to him from the start than to, say, Grover or Percy, after Annabeth goes over the cliff again. When he shows up in DC, she’s much less angry than he’s seen her.
-Along the way to New Mexico and then San Francisco, he listens. He’s grown better at it, this far in. When the others are asleep, when Bianca is being fussed over after Talos, when everyone but them is asleep by the fire, he listens.
-And she tells him about her sisters. About her father, when the world was young and Atlas had looked on every daughter of his with pride. She tells him, pride glistening in her eyes, of the battles she has seen, the hunts she has overseen at the command of a goddess, the monsters she has killed, and the epithets she has been given.
-He doesn’t ask anything of her. Not until they’re in the house of Annabeth’s father, drinking lemonade the night before the battle, and Nico knows she is about to die again.
-What do you want, he asks. You’ve done everything. What’s left?
-She stopped, ice seems to creep over her again, and Nico wondered if he’d hit some sore spot.
-He’s opened his mouth to make his apologies when she answers, so quiet and quick he thinks he’s imagined it.
-To be remembered. When my lady has taken another lieutenant, as she must, and I have gone to where all gods go when they die, I wish for my memory to remain. And. . .
-Nico waits, and ignores the sudden, terrifying thought that he no longer knows what he wants.
-I wish to see the stars again. I was born a nymph of the sunset; starlight is precious to me. I want to see it again.
-Nico dies to preserve the memory of Zoë Nightshade.
100:
-Nico di Angelo wakes up in Westover Hall. He hopes for the last time.
-He does everything right: Annabeth goes over the cliff, his sister joins the Hunt, Percy is soon his friend, and he convinces Silena and Beckendorf to join the quest.
-The Nemean Lion never stands a chance, and Nico is glad to be rid of it.
-His sister lives.
-Nico watches Percy watch Rachel Elizabeth Dare go, looking like he’s just taken a frying pan to the face, and fights the urge to snicker.
-Thalia doesn’t start a fight with Nereus, but Percy certainly does. Nico could’ve sworn he saw the boy with sun-hair again, watching with curiosity.
- Zoë Nightshade dies in the arms of Artemis and is made into the stars she loves so dearly. Nico promises her soul that he will remember.
-For, he has found, the dead have a tendency of remembering things they shouldn’t.
-Annabeth and Percy now have grey streaks to match Nico’s, and Nico can’t wait to spend the rest of his life trying to explain that.
-It’s closer than he would like, but much less close than other lives with Olympus. The Ophiotaurus is alive and safe, and they are all alive.
-As Nico walks out of the council, he looks off to the side. By the fire is the familiar girl with red eyes--the Lady Hestia, looking much closer to Nico’s age than that of the Olympian she is.
-Besides her are three old ladies. Nico’s heard about them from Percy, in Loops 26, 53, 61, and 62.
-One lady holds a ball of string that is the color of a warm umber. The other is knitting what looked suspicious like socks. The last. . .
-Scissors, in one hand. Just as expected. Nico swallowed.
-In the other, was a knot of burnt string, tied to the socks. Behind her, Nico could see discarded string of all colors: an electric blue, a stormy grey, a black that seems to glisten with the promise of a storm, string the soft, hopeful pink of love, yarn run through with bright copper.
-Glowing threads that Nico could only describe as the color of starlight.
-As he walked out, firmly between Percy Jackson and Thalia Grace, the Hunt of Artemis behind him, Nico hears one last promise:
It is done, Nico di Angelo.

and at first she’d be like “why r u telling me this what”
but when she’d have a bad day or just needed a laugh she’d IM grover and say “did percy say anything funny today?” or “is nancy bobofit still picking on him”
grover would be like “do you want to see a picture of him?” and annabeth was like “no i’ll just see him when he comes to camp” bc she was nervous about him being cute (spoiler alert: he was)
OH OH OH and grover would talk about how amazing sally is but he couldn’t figure out why annabeth seemed sad and had to hang up suddenly
it’s because she cried afterward and felt jealous that he had an amazing mom and that was the real reason she didn’t actually like him when she met him, not because of their parent’s rivalry

Rating PJO Ships
I already made the PJO shipping jar meme (not linking because tumblr hates links) but thought I’d write it out anyway.

Solangelo - (5/10) Will is Nico’s unnecessary rebound because Rick couldn’t let someone walk around with a crush on Percy without pairing them off with someone or making them live a life of chastity. The fandom went wild with this ship despite all of their “development” being off the page. Would be better if the building attraction and relationship was given actual page time to develop instead of being rushed.
Frazel - (10/10) My only complaint is that we didn’t get more of them being the awesome couple they are. The way they went from friends to lovers is perfect. Looks cute but can kick your ass. Very supportive of each other. I am here for biracial power couples.
Lukercy - (10/10) There are literally dozens of parallels between them and Rick wrote them as soulmates. I love that Luke trained Percy so hard that Percy’s never lost a sword fight except to Luke himself and still hears Luke’s voice in his head guiding him through fights. The subtle ways that Luke constantly gave Percy (and Co) chances to escape from Kronos’ grasp even when he still believed in Kronos was golden. Luke was the only person who was kind to Percy at Camp Half-Blood and trusted Percy to help other demigods when he died? My heart. How Percy now shares all of Luke’s views on the Olympians? Bittersweet irony. I wish that Luke hadn’t died because I’m tired of writing resurrection AUs.
Percico - (10/10) The most powerful power couple. Nico’s youthful hero worship giving way to love? Sign me up. Percy spending winter looking for Nico to keep him safe and trying to reassure him that he has a place at Camp Half-Blood? Give me more. Making mistakes and forgiving each other for them and their relationship strengthening because of it? Gods, yes. Going to Italy to go gift shopping and flirting? Thank you for this blessing, Rick. If only they had been endgame.
Thaliabeth - (7/10) Thalia is the only person that Annabeth respects and Thalia has extremely protective feelings toward Annabeth. They would be the nightmare power couple. Murder wives who slay anyone who stands in their way of power and glory. Neither of them would take shit from the other. And honestly, I’m here for it.
Perachel - (10/10) Mutual respect and open communication are extremely sexy in relationships. Rachel being Percy’s mortal tie and his chance at a normal life; Percy being the one to help Rachel with her powers and clear sight? Please yes. They were really cute and sweet and had so much chemistry. It would have been great if Rick acknowledged that the Oracle isn’t a lifelong job and that Rachel can still date and have sex as long as it isn’t vaginal penetration.
Percabeth - (0/10) Annabeth hits, pinches, pokes, kicks, ribs, and punches Percy too often for my tastes. She’s got a superiority complex and makes herself feel better by calling him stupid, crazy, and insane. Constantly threatens violence. Annabeth is possessive, jealous, refuses to communicate, and doesn’t respect Percy or allow him to have autonomy. She constantly wants to control what he says and does or doesn’t say/do. She victim blames him multiple times for incidents that were beyond Percy’s control. Percy is scared of her, refuses to argue so that he doesn’t set her off, and thinks Annabeth is going to hurt him every time she so much as looks at him. Percy deserves better.
Jiper - (5/10) It would have been cool to see them work past the lies and false memories to make a real romantic relationship but I don’t really have a horse in that race. They’re alright. Not bad, not the best.
Pipeo - (7/10) If the theory that all of Piper’s memories of Jason were actually memories of Leo is true, then I’m here for this. The fact that they were friends before they even knew they were demigods was fantastic. Give me that friends to lovers dynamic and the chaotic trouble they would get into together. They would be unstoppable.
Caleo - (5/10) Pairing Calypso up with a man boy instead of a man man was a strange choice but Rick likes pairing up teenagers with beings that are over a thousand years old. It’s terribly romantic that Leo kept his promise and came back for Calypso. I like that they decided to leave the demigod life behind to do their own thing. They’ve had enough of the gods! Let them figure themselves out and enjoy each other and life.
Connabeth - (4/10) The idea is cute if you don’t think about it at all. I think Connor would stand up to Annabeth but she’s been known to wear down three thousand year old centaurs [Chiron] so that he’ll do what she wants...so I’m not sure that Connor actually stands a chance of holding his own against Annabeth.
Lukethan - (4/10) It would be really cute but they’ve never even spoken to each other in canon. Ethan spoke with Kronos.
Thaluke - (2/10) Thalia doesn’t like Luke. She withheld a lot of [trivial] information from Luke just because she could and didn’t tell him important info either. She almost definitely knew that Luke would do whatever she wanted him to because she’s got a Look that makes him melt. Thalia is incredibly eager to kill Luke and eventually does. Luke is too dependent and blinded by how much he wanted someone to love him. They’ve got an unhealthy dynamic and I don’t see either of them changing to become better people together.
Valdangelo - (6/10) They’re both small and cute. That’s all I’ve got. There’s no reason not to ship them. Oh, and Leo warming up a cold Nico with his fire powers is so sweet that I’ve got cavities just thinking about it.
Jasico - (9/10) Rick was really writing them with romantic troupes during Mark of Athena and House of Hades. When they were paired off with other people, I was actually really surprised. The way that Jason supports Nico’s queerness and the way that Nico can teach Jason that he doesn’t have to live up to stereotypes and other people's expectations...that would have been really good to read. The way that Jason’s death affected Nico really tugged at my heartstrings. I like to think that Nico visits Jason in the Underworld.
Thalianca - (6/10) The potential of Thalia and Bianca could have been so good and also good for comedy. Imagine Thalia - who missed the past five years - trying to catch Bianca up on the 21st century and being behind on the times. Both of them getting caught up together? Yes. Training together, friendly games and competitions. Midnight rendezvous at Camp Half-Blood. Bianca slowly showing Thalia that not all Hunters of Artemis are bad. Girls supporting each other and growing as people because of their relationship. This is what we could have had.

Stargazing in Grey
Warnings: Rachel Elizabeth Dare being a little shit, but we love her anyways (so in other words, none)
Characters: Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, Rachel Elizabeth Dare (but only for like two lines at the very end)

Word Count: 1,405
Summary: Percabeth sneaks out of their cabins to go stargazing and realize (again) how much they love each other. Takes place between the end of HOO and the beginning of TOA
“You know… we could have just taken some Melatonin or something.” Percy made a confused face.
Annabeth rolled her eyes despite knowing that he probably couldn’t see her do that in the dark. “And where’s the fun in that?”
“Who are you and what have you done to my rule-following Wise Girl?” His smile was audible in his voice.
She elbowed him in the stomach and fell back onto the grass of Camp Half-Blood hill, her grey eyes searching the night sky. Constellations danced across her gaze and a smile curled over her lips. Percy’s eyes adjusted to the night enough for him to be able to see her features illuminated by the moonlight.
Gods, she’s the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen.
“What was that?” Annabeth sat up.
Percy realized he had whispered his thoughts out loud and plopped himself down in the grass next to her. “Nothing! So tell me, Wise Girl,” he pointed up at the stars. “Which one is that constellation?”
She laid back down and followed his finger to where he was pointing. “Oh, that’s just Heracles.”
Percy made a gagging sound. “Oh gods not that guy!”
That was the game they played: Percy pointed out a constellation, Annabeth identified it and they repeated. Percy told stupid jokes just to hear Annabeth’s laughter and he felt like he was walking on air everytime he heard it.
This was his Wise Girl, he realized. Starting from “you drool when you sleep” all those years ago and now sneaking out of their cabins at night to watch the stars when the nightmares became too much. Everything else in his life was fleeting and frankly at the mercy of ungrateful gods, but Annabeth was his constant. She was his tie to mortality when he dipped in the River Styx, she was the one thing he remembered when Hera stole his memories and sent him west and she was the one who held his hand in Tartarus when the world quite literally swallowed him up. And now that they had survived two Great Prophecies and were finishing up the summer in Long Island before heading to New Rome, the realization of how much Annabeth completed him struck Percy in the heart. She was the one who kept him humane when he wanted to unleash his destructive powers, she was the one who treated his wounds when he hurt himself against monsters and she was the one who curled up and cuddled him when the whole world was against them.
How in Hades was he so lucky to have fallen for her and for her to have fallen right back - quite literally in their case.
When they had finished their game, Percy found himself staring at her once more. He could examine her face for years and still find new things to fascinate himself with. If he was given Pandora’s box and told that the Hope at the bottom was Annabeth, he’d rip the lid off in a heartbeat and slay all of the monsters that jumped out with her.
She yawned, pulling Percy back into reality, and stretched her arms. “We should probably head back before Malcolm wakes up and flips on us.”
Percy pouted like a child and turned over in the grass to face away from her. “No! This was your idea and I wanna stay!”
Annabeth sighed and scooted closer to him, wrapping her arms around his waist and pressing her face into his back. “You’re such a child, no wonder you live with your mother at eighteen.”
He wiggled a bit so that he could turn his head to glare at her. “I’ll have you know that I missed half of being sixteen and half of being seventeen!”
She squeezed the skin of his stomach to shut him up and the two laid there spooning in the grass for a bit. Annabeth could feel his heartbeat and the way his lungs expanded when he breathed and sighed at the realness of it all. For six months, she was without him. After years of fighting by his side, he had just vanished and both of them were pulled into another Olympus-Destroying calamity that they had to fix. She had found herself cursing out the gods during that time, begging to know why did it always have to be her family that got messed over by the gods? For once, couldn’t someone else take up the mantle? Thalia had died then joined the Hunt, Luke was… well, Luke and all of the other campers moved on and away as time passed if they weren’t killed by monsters. Percy was the only constant she had and Hera had taken him away. Her Percy, the one who held up the sky for her. Her Percy, the one who fell into Tartarus for her. Her Percy, the one who held her tight when a curse had taken her vision and promised to never leave her. Her Percy, the one who turned down immortality for her. Annabeth hugged him tighter and pressed a kiss to his back. She was never letting go of him again.
"Did you just kiss my Achilles Spot?" He turned his head to look at her again.
She pulled her head back and blinked. It must have happened subconsciously while she was reminiscing about the past. “I guess I did, sorry.”
He rested his head on the ground again. “No no it’s fine, I just haven’t had anyone touch there in a while. I guess I’ve always protected it from people, even after the curse is gone.”
And that was another thing. His only weakness, the small of his back, he exposed it joyfully to her. He took his life and placed it into her hands because there was no one else in the entire world who Percy Jackson trusted more than Annabeth Chase.
She untangled herself and sat up. “But seriously, we should get back before the harpies start their pre-dawn rounds. Washing dishes in lava again does not sound like fun.”
He sat up with her and brushed a stray piece of grass off of her cheek with a wide smile. There was still a tiny sliver of grey hair from when they were younger and took turns holding up the sky. “Yeah… you’re right.”
“When am I not?” She leaned into his touch.
Inches, centimeters, touching. The only thought in Percy’s mind was how soft Annabeth’s lips felt against his own and how much she smelled like fresh ink on sunwarmed paper. Was that a scent? It was now. His calloused hands caressed her face like if he let go, she would crumble into sand between his fingertips and she eagerly gripped his shirt right back. For either the third or fourth time that evening, the whole world seemed to melt away. Two heartbeats became one, two souls linked together and two bodies pressed together in such a loving embrace that even Aphrodite herself would have turned away with a blush.
They came crashing back to the real world when the sound of a camera clicked behind them. The two jerked their heads to the sound to see a familiar redhead holding up a camera.
“Rachel Elizabeth Dare!” Annabeth's voice came out as a harsh whisper.
The Oracle of Delphi cackled as she turned heel and ran down the hill towards her cave. Annabeth moved to chase after her, but Percy grabbed her wrist, covering his mouth with his free hand to keep from laughing. “Let’s just get back to our cabins before she goes leaking that to Lou Ellen and Piper.”
The daughter of Athena couldn’t argue with that. They gathered themselves and made the trek back to the Athena cabin. They stood outside the door, not wanting the moment to end, but also understanding that they both needed sleep. Annabeth moved closer and pecked Percy one last time on the lips before heading inside.
Percy made the walk back to the Poseidon cabin with a goofy smile on his face and was humming a tune who’s name he couldn’t remember. His Wise Girl had broken the rules and was ready to fistfight the Oracle of Delphi to keep it a secret. He was so proud of his negative influence on her. He silently made a vow to get that picture from Rachel to hang up in his room in New Rome. It would brighten up his dorm tremendously.

just consider...Jason’s whole foundation as a character was built on the fact that he was abandoned by his mother when he was two...which is why he’s a rule follower and keeps promises; he never wants people to feel like how he did...and when he came to camp, he literally describes as people seeing him as a “prince in waiting,” and the little ways he tried to rebel (trying to change tradition, joining the worst cohort, taking the least glamorous missions, making friends with the “least popular kids”) he was still thoughtful about...like he talks about how even when he tried to rebel, he considered both sides before taking a stand, and “he had made praetor anyway,” like it wasn’t something he was seeking out, his thoughts were never heard because they were considered strange
And when he went to Camp Halfblood, he ends up with a girlfriend who won’t let him talk about his old life anyway without feeling guilty (Reyna and he were best friends) and he had little to no agency in their relationship whatsoever (his first thoughts about piper when he’s gathering his bearings is “didn’t want to mess with her head anymore”), was stifled when he talked to about things he was intersted in (Piper actually does not care when he starts talking about the Pillars of Hercules, saying ‘wow, hanging out with Annabeth has turned Jason into a brainiac’ when for the rest of the series, Jason is spouting intelligent facts and Leo straight up refers to him as “Professor Grace” to tease him), Mellie is angry at him because Piper never delved into the specifics of their breakup with her, and he just accepts it; he accepts that he’s going to die by Caligula’s hands because he’s not letting Piper do it (she goes “I might’ve done the same thing”), neither one of his best friends attend his funeral, he never gets to see his sister again, he never gets to visit Thalia’s tree in canon, Piper’s the one that has the last conversation with Reyna in BOO
Annabeth says that Jason always rubbed her the wrong way because he’s “too perfect,” and Hazel is uncomfortable with him too, but Jason’s first thoughts are to ask how her mist practice is going and he’s sure she’s going to get it (he’s so confident in how he says it that she’s surprised) and Jason tries to get to know Nico before the Cupid fiasco goes down (Hazel had to give Frank a look that he reads as, “Nico needs to work on his social skills”)
And the boy dies, without his friends, buried as a roman even though he gets no resolutoin with them (you would even think Reyna and he would have a conversation in HOH because of the scepter but they don’t)
Like he’s a sweet, selfless boy who always tried to do what was right, weighed both sides even when the issues bothered him, and his issue was that he never had agency for himself because people only saw the son of Jupiter title and went with that, and he’s so used to protecting everyone else that he has a hard time letting others protect him (his struggle in MOA) and even tried to recreate the memories Piper loved so much at the end of BOO, then he never got agency in his relationship with Piper, he never got to see his best friend again, and they both left him, and everyone just decided to give him a roman funeral

Imagine (based on the incomplete fanfic Son of Underworld) (3/5) (Son of Hades! Percy AU)
Before reading, check the masterpost - and read the warnings before proceeding :)) Good reading!
Percy goes back to Yancy, and things proceed as normal. He has nightmares, he misses his mom, who he only saw for a week. He thinks back on last summer and asks himself if it's worth going back to.
Annabeth tries to go back to her father's family. It doesn't go well, but at least they could keep contact using a landline for the three months she can deal with the monsters in her father's new location. There's a weekend he tries to visit her in San Francisco - but he still isn't perfect and lands in Sacramento.
It takes him an hour and a half to reach her - and it's the best weekend of the year, even if he doesn't meet anyone in her family - she is afraid they'll double the monsters in her house.
And her stepmom is racist. So there's that.
Annabeth makes fun of his Academy Uniform, the blazer and the black gloves, the red tie that he hates, and he calls her Wise Girl - he is two grades over her because of her years as a runaway.
It feels a little like a date. There's pizza, and they hold hands when she takes him to see the Golden Gate. He notices that Annie's eyes look literally like molten silver - every demigod carries a trace of their parent, he finally notices.
He can't come back after that - they were attacked by a Hydra, and killing it was only possible because he managed to use fire - a green, weird fire that he did not know he had - to cauterize the stumps.
Blackjack shadow travels him back to Yancy Academy and he and Annie keep the contact for another two weeks before she has to go back to Camp since San Francisco is becoming too dangerous.
It's his last year of middle school. Next year, he doesn't know if he'll continue in Yancy or go for a scholarship at Phillips Academy, in Massachusetts.
It's far. It's almost four hours from his mother, it's six hours from Camp. But it's the best school on the East Coast.
He does his midterms exams. He is in all high of A+ in Geometry, Algebra II, Economics and Government, Ancient World History, and Health&PE.
U.S. History and Science keep between B- and D+, and he is okay with that.
Language Arts and World Cultures can go die in a hole. He hates reading, writing makes him anxious and the only language he can get a C+ is Latin.
They give him a tutor for English - his GPA is only sustained by math. His grades raise a little: They go from F to E+.
There's a girl being tutored with him. She is Cherokee and a grade below him - her name is Piper.
He hates verbs. He hates To Kill a Mockingbird. He will kill a mockingbird if it stops them asking him to read again.
He cheats in his essays - makes skeletons write them for him. They suspect - it's not his handwriting, it's not the way he writes, it has no errors.
They can't prove it, so he scrapes Language Arts with a D+.
His midterm GPA is amazing. He goes see his mother for Christmas, even though he thinks there's no Christ. Maybe. Who knows? He is not celebrating Jupiternalia anyway.
He barely put his bag down when his four weeks with his Mom go down the drain - Thalia and Annabeth appear in his door. He grabs his backpack, his weapons, and go.
Annabeth looks at his hands with wonder - it's the first time she sees them bare in two years, but he puts his gloves back quickly enough.
Thalia is less skittish around him, and that's good. Better, at least. He notices that her eyes aren't only green - there are waves in them, it's like looking at the sea. It changes with her humor, perhaps? He doesn't know.
They make fun of his uniform - but they are going to Westover Hall, and he will merge better if he looks like a preppy kid from a boarding school.
Percy knows about the Mist this time. He helps Thalia to control it - his heart aches when he thinks of his friends. Its been a year and a half now. He misses them.
The daughter of Zeus asks him who taught him.
"The same person who taught you"
She looks at him appreciatively now, but he knows he'll come short of whoever she is measuring him against.
They see the kids. There's a girl looking nervous and overlooking the gym, and a boy by her side fiddling with his cards. Their hair is black just like his - he wishes for a brother and a sister.
Their skin is not like his - but it doesn't matter that they have a different mom, does it? In the end, it's family. Grover says they're powerful - so Big Three might be a possibility.
They're not children of Poseidon - their skin lacks the tan and the hair lacks the messiness, the windswept look - And Zeus is a lot of things, but a hypocrite isn't one of them, is?
Percy dances with Annabeth, and he feels alive. Then, he is running to save the children.
He doesn't shadow travel them. Shadowtravelling with more than one person is tricky, and he still hasn't mastered not going to Wyoming.
He kills the manticore with his Warhammer, but as it crumbles to dust, Annabeth falls.
The earth trembles at his feet - but it's Thalia's hand in his shoulder that remembers him there's two kids here, and Artemis Hunt is all looking at him with varying degrees of disgust and fear.
It's nothing he is not acquainted with. For being black (and not even a normal shade of black), for his clothes, for not having a father, for having a father and it being Hades. Just now, he was being judged for being a man.
Misandry is news for him. His mother raised him to respect all genders (even when he discovered a few months ago there's more than two), that women deserve the same as men. Annabeth fights alongside him frequently enough. Clarisse wipes the floor with his ass. Katie Gardner doesn't - it doesn't make her weaker, or less deserving of respect.
He knows women have to fight for their place in society much more than he has to. He knows these women are probably traumatized by violent men and unable to fight back.
It still doesn't make it right for them to be bullies. It gives a reason, but not a justification.
And when they take Bianca Di Angelo, who has a little brother and barely has any idea of what she is doing, who was just attacked by a thing that shouldn't exist and is probably still in shock, he wants to scream.
Artemis sees something in Bianca - and he finally looks at the girl's eyes. There's a storm raging in them.
Zeus is a hypocrite, after all.
But it's not his place to say anything, nor to the children, nor against Artemis, so he just leaves the tent and goes ask the only other boy here to teach him Mythomagic.
Nico Di Angelo asks way too many questions and has an infinite source of energy. He is prideful - a trace common of all Zeus children. His eyes aren't stormy like his sisters, there aren't clouds in his irises. They are white, like his probable father's lighting bolt.
Nico asks him why he has green eyes - and why they turned black after the question. He doesn't know the answer.
Apollo appears and says something about flying in the sun car - it's the first time he and Thalia agree on something.
But calls for Blackjack. He is not flying, not even under a god's asking. Apollo understands.
Thalia goes with him. Better through shadows than through air. He doesn't want to leave Nico with the misandry archers - but he has Grover, and Percy would probably land them in Iowa.
The daughter of Poseidon holds his waist while they ride on the hellhound. He focuses the best he can - and, for the first time, he lands exactly where he wants to land: in the woods at Camp.
Thalia helps him get to the Big House under weird looks of the year-rounders. They are there at least three hours before Apollo.
"You're kinda heavy, Corpse Breath. But that was cool."
"Shut it, Kelp Head"
He is anxious to just leave and go back to his mother, but Annabeth is in danger: They need a quest.
He has dreams. He can't fault Annabeth for doing what he would've done without a second of hesitation. It's Luke.
He helps Nico settle at Cabin 11, and avoids the huntresses. Connor hugs him, and Clarisse wipes the floor with him in wrestling - they are his friends now.
Clarisse, Connor, Annabeth, Grover, Charles. Luke, Ethan, Alabaster. The scales are tipping. He doesn't care for masters - he cares who is the defending.
Artemis goes missing, and they finally get a quest. Zoe Nightshade doesn't want a boy in the quest but tough luck: He is the most experienced camper here right now AND the quest goes through a desert, so he is going.
There's some doubt about taking Thalia - she is a daughter of Poseidon and can't do much in the wasteland.
So it's decided: Phoebe, Bianca, Zoe, Perseus, and Grover. No one is happy about it, and Percy knows Thalia is going to follow them.
He introduces himself as Perseus to them. He is stoic and doesn't smile around the girls.
Capture the Flag is horrible. He doesn't leave his post and blocks Zoe with skeletons for enough time that Thalia manages to snag the flag and cross the river.
The huntresses get mad and try to fight the campers - Phoebe tries to hit Nico with the pommel of her sword and a lightning bolt hits her, putting her out of commission.
He is claimed. Bianca isn't, but it doesn't matter: She is not a camper, she is a hunter. Her loyalty is to her half-sister now.
They leave in the morning without Phoebe before anyone wakes up.
Bianca looks at him weirdly because of his soft white and blue sweaters and scrunchies that he started using to take off hair from his face, and the contrast it makes with his dark skin and demeanor.
Newsflash: He doesn't care for a prejudiced daughter of Zeus's opinion.
Zoe doesn't even look at him twice: They have trans girls in the hunt, they're caught up with modern times. Except for the misandry and the exclusion of genderfluid, agender and non-binary people. But sure, caught up.
Nico asks him to protect his sister. He says he is going to try, but he understands death better than some. He says it'll be dangerous, but he'll do his best.
For some reason, Nico doesn't look worried.
Thalia joins them in the Space museum. She came in her Pegasus, Porkpie, and they fight the Nemean Lion together. His hellhound startles the hunters, and Thalia laughs.
They kill the Nemean Lion, and Perseus thinks he finally perfects his power over the earth when he uses a stone spike to pierce the monster through the mouth and barely gets tired.
The duster is not his style, but beggars can't be choosers. Zoe is warming up to them, he thinks, but he doesn't care either way: his objective is Annabeth.
He still hasn't managed to open the ground or to control metal's proprieties, but he controls the earth beneath his feet, shadow travels (very badly controlled, but sure), raises armies of skeletons and money and gems just sprout when he wants them. He has power.
But he isn't completely in control yet, so he doesn't want anyone touching him. And it's been such a long time since anyone except his mother ever been close to any skin below his neck.
Perseus has dreams. He is grateful that Artemis took the sky for Annabeth, so he burns the coat in her name.
Thalia says she has met Apollo, and Perseus is glad at least one god is on their side.
Perseus feels in the air: life. This town is cloying with the smell of life, of forests and waterfalls. He hates it on principle but wishes she could enjoy it.
He kills a spartoi. He doesn't manage to kill more, but now he knows. He wishes he could open the ground and swallow all of them, but even his own skeletons he only manages to turn them into piles of bones.
The boar carries most of them: it's still just a boar and they are five, so both he and Thalia enjoy Blackjack, who now is almost the size of a small rhino.
Perseus meets Ares awake this time. He didn't snitch on him to the gods, but he wishes he did.
Meeting Aphrodite is awful. Percy looks at her, and he sees blonde hair that he can't decide if it's golden or brownish, he looks at her eyes and see the blue and grey fight for dominance in the irises. Her skin flicks, and he sees a scar crossing her eye.
For a moment, her skin turns as black as his - his desire for family.
He hates her more than he hates Ares when she looks at him with a smile and says that his love life will be the most interesting tale she has ever woven.
They cross the junkyard. Bianca dies for a figurine of Zeus, and Perseus wants to scream at the skies for the injustice. He isn't close to Bianca, he won't miss her, but he blames himself.
What if he was good enough at shadow traveling to take all of them away? What if he was able to kill Talos before? If he saw the figurine in her hand, if he was clearer in his warning, if, if, if.
He is a son of Hades, and death follows him. The stench of it grabs at his clothes, but he doesn't cry. Bianca is not the first to die in the name of the gods - she won't be the last one.
Perseus tries and tries to reach for any part of her body - everything is gone.
The Hoover Dam goes exactly the same way - Percy finds the mortal girl cute, but he doesn't ponder on it. It's not the time. He tells her his name is Percy, because why not. He is not seeing her again.
He laughs at the dam joke and feels a little freer. He cares about Zoe. It's difficult not to.
They fly away, and Perseus doesn't like it, but he barely flinches.
They get closer - all of them. Perseus always makes friends in quests, and he is happier for it.
Thalia catches Nereus - and she tells them all about Bessie, the ophiotaurus. Percy thinks that, for a serpent cow, it's pretty cute.
Grover leaves with it back to Camp Half-Blood and away from the temptation that Thalia feels. He knows it - he feels it too, deep inside of him, the urge to kill all of them.
But is Kronos any better?
They meet Annabeth's father. Her stepmom caught a glance at him and sneers like he is covered in blood.
Luke is in Mount Othrys. Percy doesn't join him. He wants to. The drachma is still in his pocket. But Luke needs to pay for what he has done to Annabeth. This is not about the war that looms on the horizon, this is about his best friend.
They fight. Perseus holds the sky, but the thing in his fingertips is not the earth, it's something older and harder, that presses him to his knees. He draws strength from the earth, and he holds on.
They win, but at what cost? Luke falls. He cries and throws the drachma over the cliff - a promise gone with one of his first friends.
Zoe is dead. Three people dead, for a goddess who couldn't care less about them. Perseus wants to go back in time and accept Luke's proposal.
He wants to cry and he doesn't. They go to Olympus. Thalia joins Artemis, and he feels betrayed: just because she is afraid of power, she is going to throw the weight of this prophecy on him?
And on top, she just joined the eternal misandry group, and something in his heart festers. He thought he had one more friend in her, but she was just another pawn.
Annabeth basks in her mother's praise. He wants to vomit - two people are dead, but who cares.
Thalia pleads for the ophiotaurus life, but she doesn't lift a finger when they talk about his death. He hates her. He holds a grudge for his cousin just like his father holds one for his brother.
He just saved their asses for the third time, and they're talking about murdering him because he might not save them a fourth.
The gods. They take and they take and they take and the demigods keep giving.
His father saves him - no one dares to go against Hades' vote to let him live, because he is a hero.
They go back to camp, and Perseus is charged with the task to tell Nico.
"Well, so bring her back"
The boy says it non-chanlantly like he is counting on it. Percy feels guilt creep at his heart like a plague, all the ways he failed to save Bianca. If he just had a better grasp in his powers, if he was just better. And here it was, something else he couldn't do.
"I can't, Nico"
Nico yells at him. He screams that he killed his sister. Percy starts to retract, and they end up in the pavilion. Everyone is there, and they don't lift a finger to help.
Percy is so tired. He hasn't seen his mom since October. He just lost one of his best friends. He was on a mission for a week. He held the sky in his hands. Zoe is dead. Thalia is gone. Death follows him. The guilt claws at him - for not being enough.
Nico shouts and shouts. The final straw is when he says that he shouldn't have trusted a son of Hades, how everyone told him not to. He tells no one wants him here, and before anyone can say anything to contest it, spartoi appear.
People scramble for their weapons, but Percy opens the ground and swallows all of the skeletons. When they're gone, so is Percy.
Turns out? Percy doesn't want to be here anymore either.
Nico is prideful. People in camp scrambled for his attention. A couple of kids of Aphrodite tell him that Perseus wasn't a good company, trying to get in his good graces. This time around, there's no one to sing the praises of Percy Jackson.
Grover takes him aside and explains, a little against him own will, what happened with Bianca. He gives him the figurine.
Nico feels guilty. He is too prideful to admit, but he feels it burning in his heart - so he tries to understand what he just did. Grover tells him about the last two years. The guilt now fights with admiration, and resentment battles with adoration.
Some people steer clear of him for a while. Charles Beckendorf is too kind to isolate him - but Nico sees the sadness in his eyes. Annabeth doesn't talk with him - she just lost three best friends in a swoop. Grover reluctantly tells him more about Percy. Clarisse wipes the floor with him - and he doesn't complain when he wakes up and his makeshift bed in Cabin 1 is crawling with bugs - He is pretty sure Connor hates him.
Katie Gardner doesn't talk to him anymore. Will Solace - who is his best friend - consolates him. He tells Nico he was pretty awful to Percy last summer, and Percy still came back.
Pretty awful doesn't even begin to cover what Nico did. But he nods and settles. It's going to be fine.
Perseus wanders the Underworld. He plays with Cerberus, and it's finally time to go make peace with his father and meet Persephone.
There's the heavy weight of a drachma in his pocket.
