Most people couldn’t stand the neon in the dark.

It was garishly bright, it was harsh, it was annoying at best. The sign would blink and linger behind your eyelids, stain the shadows in the dark like sunspots, make an impression that washed out the relaxing calm, the blanket of the night.

It keeps most people awake, Matt Murdock explained on that very first night. It doesn’t bother me, obviously. Take the bed. It’s not as noticeable in the bedroom.

But it didn’t bother you either. The contrast caught your eye on the second night; the colors would paint the monochromatic neutral tones of the apartment, how they would mix and melt into the chipped brick walls, the trim, the beams of the ceiling. How if you were in the right place – the right cushion on the couch, far enough back into the kitchen – it looked like a painting come alive right before your eyes. Something that would go on to live in a local indie gallery, something inspired by vaporwave, or whatever they were calling neon nostalgia these days.

Still. Silent. Chiaroscuro. Art in the wild.

It was like clockwork, the blinking. The colors coming and going at the first peek of evening shadow, only to blink right off at the first knock of the sun’s rays on the horizon.

After the third, fourth, tenth, twentieth nights it had become a comfort of sorts, namely for the days Matt Murdock wasn’t there to press you into the wall and kiss you senseless, or weave each other stories under the moonlight with a nest of blankets and concrete beneath you. When he wasn’t there to ghost his fingertips over your skin as you drifted off to sleep, so painfully content that you always wondered if this beautiful man with a devastating secret would be the end of you.

You never knew, but he often asked himself the same thing.

Then there were days that damned neon was the only constant about Matt Murdock, the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. Daredevil.

Moments of lovesick peace would only last so long.

Your skin would crawl on the nights sleep wouldn’t come. Mug of tea, coffee, something stronger cradled in your hands while your mind wandered, your feet wandered, your eyes drifted around this space of his, this little hideaway of yours. You would always hear him before you saw him, adrenaline spiked and oh so weary. Some nights he was covered in so much blood you didn’t know where it ended and his own crimson suit began.

“You’re still awake,” he would say, scowl tugging his mouth down, always sounding surprised. As if it was unusual, for you to be restless on the nights he donned devil horns to go hunting.

And you’re still alive, would be your reply.

He would stay close until dawn. You would gravitate toward him just the same, moths to flame, flowers to the sun. Conversations were hazy and hushed in the early morning-late night blur. They walked that fine fragile line between this is not okay, Matt, and you know you can’t shove me away as easily as everyone else, you stubborn ass.

Unspoken vs spoken. Horror vs love.

Clockwork, nonetheless.

Until one day, the clock shattered.

Matt Murdock doesn’t come home.

Then it’s days. Weeks slipped into months. Months slipped into a blend of minutes, moments, denial casually catching hold within as you found yourself still in his apartment – your little hideaway - watching the steady blink blink blink of the neon sign through the dirty, frosted window panes of the kitchen. Then the living room, then the kitchen counter. Cold tea, day old bitter coffee, something stronger untouched and unloved in the mug that hung loosely in your hands.

Those feelings of heartache and unease and an angry I fucking told you so lingered at the back of your mind, the tip of your tongue. The last time you saw him had been reenacted so many times, it began to feel like a dream. A nightmare. The flesh made into ghosts. Phantom lips brushed yours in such a gentle, such an urgent way that your pulse began to spike at the memory. The loss. The longing.

You thought about how you had gotten here, of all places, here – this apartment, this man’s life, both of you entwined with secrets and lies that could end both of you forever-

Everything was safer in the dark. What Matt Murdock hadn’t known – well. That wasn’t how he had met his end, after all.

It was almost too much to think about, on some occasions.

Until one day, when the clock began to tick once more.

You heard him before you saw him, the familiar cadence of his footsteps descended from above. The quiet slide of the roof access door snicked open and closed in the unholy hours of the night, the unholy hours of the morning.

The silence was new, however, and your eyes drifted up to see a shadow at the top of the staircase, frozen and tense and so very familiar.

“You’re still awake,” he said, and the tears were suddenly there; the ones that could never come, the ones that never seemed to leave. They were present, and the noise that left your throat wasn’t coherent, wasn’t normal, but a strangled laugh escaped your lips anyway.

“You’re still alive,” you replied. If not for the routine, your answer wouldn’t have been so intelligible. “You’re alive.” came the raspy whisper.

His silhouette nodded, began to limp down the stairs into the apartment proper. Began to finish his long journey back to you, back to everything, really. The mug in your hands was no more – placed safely, if not hastily – on the table, and you met him halfway.

“Yeah,” he said, voice quiet and so very hesitant as he clawed off the scarf covering his eyes. “I’m alive.”

There’s the hint of a smile that catches in the neon blink, one that you dreamt of sometimes, on the long nights. Shared breaths, lovesick grins, stray tears being gently brushed away followed in a fog, in a rush, in slow motion that threatened to dismantle so many things about his time away.

And then -

“Where the fuck have you been?”

He’s holding your waist, fingertips splayed, grip firm if only to convince himself that finally – finally, he’s here, you’re here, you're together. Your own hands slid to his shoulders, but you stepped back to keep him a few inches away.

Your gaze was hot and strong and analytical – Matt could feel your eyes as they saw bruised skin, torn clothes, battered, bloody knuckles. He’s been in worse shape, both you and he knew that, but he also knew he was no drawing, no painting, nothing close to a work of art worthy of a museum either. There were bloody, violent masterpieces under guard at the Louvre more worthy than he.

Had he asked you, you would have disagreed.

He can’t see the sorrow drowning the color of your eyes or the way softness carved a home on your expression, carefully melting away the tension, the anger, the fear. He can’t see you, but he does and even after all this time he still knew how to read the air around your mood shifts and the lilt of your voice. Still knew that after all he’s put you through – he felt a weight lift off his shoulders, Atlas freed at last.

He may have lost touch with many things, many people, but not once had he ever lost you.

“I’m sorry,” he began, emotion becoming thicker in his voice with every breath, every word that tumbled past his lips. It had always unsettled him, how you could unearth what he tried to hide, tried to bury.

Moths to flame, flowers to the sun.

He condensed the happenings since the building collapse after his stint with the Defenders, his words spilling out quick and quiet, rushed and worried.

But if he hadn’t finished what he started, what was he doing here? What was he doing with you? Why now?

“Let me – let me get this straight. Were you going to let us think you died, until – when? You got your shit together? Killed Fisk?” his fingers tightened where they held you, unseeing eyes wandered anywhere and everywhere except right in front of him, right on you. You knew that look. Your voice softened. “Or were you just going to disappear? Like this meant nothing – like this means nothing? And as grateful as I am that you are – why are you here, Matt?”

He shook his head, ignored the cracks that broke open his heart like dropped glass. Your name spilled from his lips like a holy hymn that golden haloed angels could never hope to sing. No one could recreate the most divine sound in all of creation. Matt Murdock would always swear you were a goddess incarnate, no matter how sinfully blasphemous it was. “You mean everything.” he pulled you into him, moved so his face was close to yours.

“It’s not that simple,” he said after, and you deflated in an instant. The amount of times a variation of this conversation had been voiced between you – you would never know. It was like a renegade wildfire: possible to lessen, impossible to tame.

It was as quick as the changing of the seasons, how he took on the urgency you’ve only witnessed a handful of times - when he allowed you in the presence of Daredevil himself. You remembered what he asked of you lifetimes ago, between hushed words and bloody gauze, hands slick with red and a needle poised between your fingertips. How if danger ever came to your door, you would listen and you would trust, and you would let him do whatever it took to keep you safe.

To keep you both safe, you tried to correct. He would nod, and you would ignore that he never agreed to such a thing.

“We need to go,” was all he said, but you knew. You remembered.

The strongest jolt of fear slammed into you, bleeding a black and white, us and them mentality. It threatened to smother the blinking neon, the bright washes of blue and white felt muted, felt so very distant when you realized that someone was coming here, someone figured it out, figured it all out.

Oh.

That wasn’t the answer you hoped for.

Us vs them.

“So it’s finally happening.”

Matt’s hands fell away from you, one slid to twine your hands together and squeezed. He was solid, he was grounding. You looked into his eyes. “You know I won’t let anything happen to you,” he took his free hand, lifted it to brush your cheek with tattered knuckles, bruises blossomed like night blooming flowers. He left a trail of soft burning flames when he traced a path down to your jaw where he stopped and cupped your face ever so gently. “That’s the one promise I knew I’d never break.”

Fear melted away when you closed the distance to kiss him, felt that heavy soul twine with yours; all was suddenly right with the world for the first time in a long time, even if the anguish of this city was about to come crashing down on your shoulders all over again. It tore at your heart, this kiss, because it was so very reminiscent of the first time he ever kissed you. Bright eyes, flushed faces, the thrill of something new ignited all around you. The future painted with vivid neon instead of muted pastels. It felt bittersweet, and you knew down in the marrow of your bones that this could very well be the last thing you would ever share with Matt Murdock, the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. Daredevil.

“I know,” you whispered against his lips. “I trust you.”

Once those words were in the open, there was no going back.

Your secret could wait.

Why is all social media political? I can’t scroll through a single app without seeing 90% of the content being political. Especially tumblr tbh. This hellsite used to be an escape from all the horrible shit happening in the world and now it’s just nothing but politics with a handful of actual shitposts, which usually end up relating to politics somehow. It’s like Facebook but worse cause at least on Facebook there are videos I can scroll through without having to see a bunch of crap inbetween. People can only handle SO MUCH before it just completely wears you down. I’m tired. I’m tired of seeing this everywhere I look. I literally cannot handle another political post about some shit that’s never going to change. The world is shit, it’s not going to shit, it’s already there. I know. We all know. But god fucking dammit can we have a fucking break please? It’s great that we can communicate what’s actually going on around the world, but it’s too much to HAVE to be worried about EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME. Because let’s be honest here, if you don’t voice an opinion about something, SOMEONE is going to get offended or mad or just pick and choose topics in a conversation that fit their narrative. I’m fucking sick of it. The endless petitions ( honestly have they ever actually worked? Like seriously have they? I have no idea. ) , the cancel culture, the toxic shit that comes from the LGBT community ( I’m bi, and poly, as cis woman and holy fuck the amount of shit I get for using the feminine pronouns is fucking disgusting. I get it, you’re tired of hetero shit being shoved down your throats, but Jesus fucking Christ not EVERYONE has to identify as a different gender or pronoun just because you do!), I’m especially tired of the US political crap. Wake up and smell the shit. They don’t ACTUALLY give a flying fuck about us. Period. You want change? Why elect someone who’s been in office for 47 years, who’s signed and came up with several bills that put black people in prison OVER PETTY SHIT who chose a VP who gave black men the maximum sentencing for weed, and then KEPT THEM IN JAIL FOR LITERAL SLAVE LABOR. Y’all are ducking playing yourselves to the max. THEY GAVE THEMSELVES A FUCKING PAY RAISE LAST YEAR OF 40K. THEY DONT GOVE A SHIT ABOUT US. You want change? Overthrow the government. Instate a new one. Or don’t. Whatever, it’s a free country, you do you. (For the record since I KNOW someone’s gonna say some shit, I don’t support Biden OR Trump. I don’t support ANY politician. I miss the stupid funny videos, the weird ass facts, the art, the comics, I miss the GOOD THINGS. I miss when tumblr especially was everyone’s escape from reality. I miss the “cringy “ shit, the superwholock fuckers who’d show up on every post. I miss the night vale references, I miss being able to LIKE things without having to defend them or argue about them (Steven Universe I’m looking at you. That community can be toxic as fuck, y’all bullied an artist to DEATH, WTF IS WRONG WITH YALL?!). I miss LAUGHING. I miss reading some long ass post that would have me literally gasping for air because I was laughing so hard. I don’t want to feel guilty, or disgusted, or ashamed, EVERY TIME I OPEN AN APP. Our stress levels are way past normal AS IT IS, we don’t need to keep adding to it. I know this past year was fucking horrible. It sucked ass. Believe me I fucking know. We all went through it. But we all went through it differently. Some people got to cut out a commute and work from home, still got a paycheck, and we’re generally unaffected. A lot lost their jobs, all income, family members and loved ones. I lost two damn good jobs, got kicked out by my alcoholic mother, and honestly if it weren’t for my uncle I would have killed myself. So is it too much to ask to just be able to fucking laugh again? Is it??

I'm asking as a confused trans and gay person regarding some of your recent posts saying aphobia doesn't exist, etc. Do you consider asexual people to be inherently LGBT even if they are cisgender and straight (heteroromantic)? I don't want to discriminate at all, I'm just confused because I see people fighting on here all the time about whether aces are part of the LGBT community or not. Do you have some insight for me as an ace nonbinary person? Thanks in advance!

i’m not sure how to explain this w/o being too extensive in what i say bc i’ve talked about this before but more in private conversations (and maybe some rants in tumblr posts) nd i tend to ramble abt it.

first of all i do not actually like the common conception that there is one way to define LGBT or the idea that everyone should fall within that category term or not, for example because the English language is colonial and rigid and does not reflect on experiences of all cultures, bc being gay or trans are not distinctly different experiences everywhere while they would be divided into different categories. so whereas i was more insistent on saying ‘you must be gay / bi / lesbian / trans to be LGBT / suffer from homophobia or transphobia’ i’ve come to realize now that this argument is rather exclusive of many gender diverse identities that do not correspond to all experiences or cultures. so i will stay away from using that argument.

however, i am speaking from my experience with online LGBT and asexual communities and have seen how the latter has tried to force itself into the other. i think a large issue with the asexual and aromantic communities is that they are partially based upon the creation of AVEN, an online forum founded by a homophobic and antisemitic man, and partially (though related to the former) by just blatantly made up statistics and history. not once have i seen a good argument or research or even personal accounts that illustrate very well why aphobia is a thing. i am asexual myself but do not want to take the lack of discrimination i faced for it as proof. there have been accounts of ‘aphobic’ discrimination that are either 1. much more a general concern with the OP facing misogyny and girls being sexualized, 2. someone making a remark based on a misconception of OP’s experiences or 3. misappropriation of terms and applying them to asexuality, e.g. ‘corrective rape’ was coined to refer to (African) lesbians who were assaulted under the presumption that it would turn them straight. asexuals have appropriated this term years ago to claim asexual people face rape on a large scale because perpetrators try to force them into liking sex. some people don’t even know the original meaning of the term because of this. i’m also not a big fan of this new interpretation of the term anyway, because legit sexual attraction is not the main reasons people commit rape; it is to seek power. this kind of mindset of asexual people being inherently vulnerable to sexual violence due to lack of feeling sexual attraction is seriously harmful; in the crime show Law and Order SVU, a suspect was let off because some main character said the suspect was asexual and this couldn’t have done it. people can be and sometimes are raped by an asexual person, because it is about taking advantage of someone and not attraction. the sole fact that so many authors of overly fetishistic fanfiction are asexual should prove this much, but instead the lack of attraction is used to distance oneself from the harm one can still cause.

and yes, asexual people can face discrimination, especially if you’re a girl you’re expected to be sexually submissive, which is pretty horrifying on its own. but this is not the same as targeted discrimination on a mass scale or institutional whatsoever. we are not thaught as we grow old that asexuals are disgusting, are a joke, or need to be violently murdered. my biggest issue with the asexual and aromantic community that we (as i have removed myself from it years ago) keep telling it that anecdontal accounts of being mildly discriminated is nowhere near the same as risking being kicked out of your house, being violently attacked due to the way you appear or having a partner of the same gender, being systematically discriminated by all sorts of institutions in society and being thaught that what you are is bad from an early age on. and then the counterargument is that LGBT is more recognized but asexual and aromantic isn’t, so ‘ace / aro’ people deserve to be included because they are underrepresented in media. but that is not the case at all. the speed at which asexuality has suddenly been incorporated and included into LGBT spaces, also offline, has been ridiculously fast. nowadays when you see a bunch of LGBT flags you see the asexual one being included a lot, sometimes in 3 different versions, while the lesbian flag is nowhere to be seen. lesbians are consistently excluded from their supposedly own community and they are not included in LGBT due to a need to change underrepresentation or lack of awareness, but because they face their own version of homophobia. the most mind-boggling thing about cis / cishet asexual and aromantic people being told that they are not oppressed, is that the response is not relief (’oh i’m glad i don’t face systematic oppression for this thing’) but anger (’how dare you not let us into your group!’). LGBT is seen as a fun party that is unnecessarily mean to anyone it gatekeeps, as if it is not actually necessary to keep out cishet people who benefit from their privilege and can use that against the rest in the group if they join.

my largest issue with the asexual community however, and i’ve touched upon this a bit before in the post, is that it victimizes itself, to such a degree where it puts itself oppositional to ‘allosexuals’. the whole idea that people who experience sexual attraction to another person are inherently privileged over abd hold power over asexual people is just not true (and the same goes for this rethoric for aromantic people). this idea is so wrong and the whole concept of the ‘allosexual’ as oppressor collapses once you consider that people who are attracted to the same gender are actually in danger and oppressed for their very attraction. not only are those who experience attraction (that isnt platonic) to other people portrayed as oppressors, but also as perverted freaks. once i decided to stop associating myself with acearo people and instead interact with LGBT people with other experiences, i realized just how much stigmatizing abd frankly, homophobic and transphobic bullshit i’ve adopted within the spaces i used to be in and that i still see gather a lot of traction (now their harmful points are also used on twitter and IRL in the public domain). the community has a huge issue where it teaches you to be puzzled and grossed out by people who want to date / kiss / have sex with other people, and this results in GSAs that now include asexuals to prohibit kissing your partner per request of asexual / aromantic members, asexual people showing up at pride with ‘can we just hug?’ signs, the common serophobic jokes (’at least we dont get hiv!!’ blergh), and for me it led to a great discomfort with kissing and sex imagery and it wasn’t until i left the community that this was in fact subtle homophobia because so much content on here is lgbt themed and to combine that with the increasing aversion to romance or sex without critically looking at that is... very toxic to say the least.

so where it’s standing right now, i don’t think including asexual or aromatic people in LGBT spaces on the basis of those identities is a good idea. one community advocates for the acceptance of sex, whereas the other is stigmatizing it and painting off those who are in fact oppressed for their transness or homosexuality, as the oppressors. it clashes and it doesn’t work. the ‘ace / aro’ community (quote unquote bc i see ‘ace’ being used a lot to imply superiority over ‘allosexuals’ like, theyre being the ace at something) has too many issues, which it is largely based on, to figure out. it can be a community on its own and i do not think you need to join LGBT to have a valid identity that has something to do with sexuality or gender and deals with a form of stigma.

The group leave the trailer park three days later.

Bundling everything of use into the back of the truck, which seemed darker in colour since the last time it was used, you had found you enjoyed leaving more than you did settling in. Packing everything into correct places had always been such a bore, even at a young age. You remembered when you were eight, and moving in to your grandparents’ home in the outskirts of Denver. Was this really Denver? It was a small town, barely noticeable amongst the cluster of trees and ferns, but nonetheless peaceful, ‘perfect for a new place to start fresh’. Yeah, it only took around an hour and a half to get to school every-day, but don’t worry, it’s a fucking perfect place to live, aged eight, as an orphan. It took you around eleven months to finish emptying each box.

But four years ago, throwing everything into a backpack and into the boot of a car you nicked from down the road, it had been so easy. It was so easy to throw everything out and keep what you really needed. Easy to forget to pack a jacket you had been given for Christmas off an aunt you barely knew, easy to remember to pack all the knives out of the kitchen and the forbidden gun your grandfather used to hunt deer in the winter. It was rather symbolic- pretending people were deers as you shot them between the eyes.

“That everything?”

Namjoon stood, risen off the ground, his hand on the bar of the roof of the truck. Taehyung stepped down the plastic steps from the trailer, not bothering to lock the door, knowing nothing in there was of any value. At one point, the rainbow-glassed fruit bowl might have been of value, sentimental value or something. Now, it was worthless, with a lightning bolt crack down the middle.

“Yeah, good to go,” Taehyung replied, hovering when you climbed into the back to join Kyungmin. He waited, not knowing what for, only mildly embarrassed when you turned to see him staring. “You okay?”

You nodded once with a smile. “Mm. Are you?”

“Yeah. Sorry, I-”

Somehow, he hadn’t realised you shuffle to the open back doors to pull him in for a simple kiss. It was that quick and simple that he almost missed it. His eyes opened to the sight of you in front of him, your hands holding his face, rubbing the stubble around his jaw.

“You’re holding us all up, you know.”

“You’re holding me up,” he muttered, peeling your hands off his face and pressing a kiss to your knuckles, somehow finding the strength to let go and at the same time, make his way to the front of the truck. The whole vehicle shook as you pulled the back doors closed, submerging Kyungmin and yourself in familiar darkness.

“You got a map anywhere?” Taehyung fuddled in the glove compartment as Namjoon started the truck up. He pulled out a worn map, the same one you had used to direct the both of you out of Denver. Namjoon didn’t care for the quality, muttering a hasty thanks and peeling it open, staring at the lines and faded colours. “Keep heading East, as if we’re going to Georgia. Hopefully, we’ll catch Seokjin and his crew of fans on the way there.”

“And if we don’t?” Taehyung asked. When Namjoon fell silent, Taehyung’s lips pulled into a tight frown, “I’m just asking for the future. You’re not coming to Georgia. We’re going. I wanna know what our plan is before we put ourselves in danger in the middle of nowhere.”

Very aware of the compartment slider down, Namjoon found it was difficult to pick a solution that would best suit everybody. Kyungmin wanted to stay with Taehyung and yourself, forgetting Korea entirely and heading straight for the islands off the coast. Namjoon knew you wanted to go to Georgia with everybody, hoping to stick together as a four, but if there was no other option, you’d go to find a plane. Taehyung wanted to get to Georgia with you, but wouldn’t be opposed to finding Seokjin. As for himself, Namjoon wanted to take the jeep to Virginia, leaving Taehyung and yourself on the road.

Everybody made tough calls. Those words echoed in his head. Above all else, Kyungmin was his priority.

“I wanna take the jeep,” Namjoon said slowly, aware of the frowns, “but I can help find a vehicle for you and Y/N to use to get to Georgia. When that happens...we’ll go our separate ways. Half to Virginia. Half to Georgia. Fair, and square.”

Kyungmin fell with a thud and a sigh in the back of the jeep, and Namjoon did his best to ignore it.

“Alright,” Taehyung agreed, believing there was no other way around it. As long as you and him were safe, he didn’t care how it happened. “Whatever you say goes.”

SOMETIME LATER.

Leaving the world behind through the back windows of the jeep, you were oddly reminded of the time you left everybody behind during a Summer many years ago. It had been a spur of the moment decision, something you never expected to do, but found yourself doing anyway.

It felt like a lifetime ago; you had almost forgotten about it, until now, until seeing a sign graffitied with a smiley face, reminding you of the “GRIME SIGN” back in your hometown, renowned for being the most graffitied sign in the city. Whether or not that's true, you never really found out. Seunghyun and Jiyong had come along too, for the moral support of being alone on the road. With Jiyong in shotgun and Seunghyun in the backseat, it had felt like something slap-bang out of a teenage coming-of-age movie, titled “3 delinquents on the road to God knows where”, directed by Quentin Tarantino. You didn’t even know how to drive. It was pure bliss.

“Any luck with the radio?”

Kyungmin rattling the small radio that had been picked up from the trailer park startled you, the memory of driving nowhere and everywhere at the same time suddenly gone like the wind. As your vision readjusted to the dark, you noticed that Kyungmin was pressing all the buttons and turning all the dials, a frown on her lips jutted outwards.

“Not yet,” she replied. “Just give me a few more minutes, I can probably get this thing working.”

Namjoon let out a soft curse, swerving the truck slightly to move around a left behind Volvo, the cars open like wings with a dried trail of dragged blood leading into the thick forest. Things like that were common accessories, famed like tourist attractions. Namjoon now thought of what the world was really like- could Paris be any worse than America? What was Iceland like these days?

“Nearly there, now,” Namjoon said vaguely, and Taehyung debated whether or not to reply, if there was even anything to reply with at all. That’s how things went now, short replies or simply none at all. When the world died, so did words. Namjoon thought that was funny, how the collapse of society could mean the collapse of communication and language.

“We’ll need to stop for gas,” Taehyung said, his voice barely above a third volume. From the back of the van, you sat with your face looking out towards the left behind road, your eyelids growing heavy at the sound of Kyungmin pressing buttons, and the hum of the van beneath your thighs. “We’re running on fumes.”

Namjoon grumbled a reply, mentioning something about a gas station a couple miles ahead, near the clearing in the woods, just off the road. It didn’t take long to approach, only around ten minutes if Taehyung were to count. At least three songs had played since then. Taehyung couldn’t believe he was now counting using songs.

The station was large, decaying and it looked unsafe. Taehyung didn’t exactly care about the safety of the building itself, just caring about how safe it would be in the long-run. Safe enough to hide inside? Safe enough to step inside? Safety in architectural design didn’t matter anymore. If it looked rusted, it didn’t matter. Nothing mattered.

Namjoon pulled the truck into the station, immediately noticing a few canisters of fuel that was left for the purpose of using, a sign reading “STAY SAFE” stood up, stuck with black masking tape. The letters were dripping onto the concrete, a small pool of chalky white near the drain where a plant was starting to sprout.

“Are you feeling okay?”

Kyungmin’s voice made you look over from the canisters, a wrinkle between your brows. She smiled, generously, and waited for your reply. “Yeah. Why wouldn’t I be?”

She was talking about the Great Escape the other day. You already knew that.

“Just curious,” she replied, the smile never wavering. “There’s not many people left in the world, you know. Next to Namjoon, you and Taehyung are all I have.”

A silence fell on the two of you, and all you could hear was the sound of Taehyung dragging a barrel across the gas station, dipping his head underneath a broken window and scanning the interior of the gas station.

“I’m here for you,” Kyungmin continued, her voice significantly quieter. “You know that, right?”

“Of course I do,” you replied, and your hand came up to stroke her forearm, a smile on your lips. For a moment, it didn’t feel like the apocalypse. In that moment, it felt like two best friends, reunited after a Summer break, the pine trees isolating them from the world, a Studio Ghibli film, released 2019.

And yet Kyungmin moved away, her gaze lowered as she passed across the gas station to meet Namjoon, already lifting canisters of gas towards the car to refill. Taehyung had emerged once again, his bag refilled with cans and cigarette packets, surprisingly a bottle of liquor in his hands as he stepped back into the bitter wind. Inhaling a breath, Taehyung crossed the width of the station and opened the passenger door to the vehicle, setting down his bag and the bottle, as if they were small children.

“There’s no way we’re making it to Georgia on time.”

Taehyung paused, throwing you a look over his shoulder. “What?”

“Let’s think realistically,” you reasoned, tugging at the cloth over his elbow. Above all, you didn’t want Kyungmin to be upset if she overheard. “It’s been...how long? Since we left the warehouse? I haven’t exactly been keeping up with the dates, but it’s been too long, Tae. Normally, it takes less than 24 hours to get from where we are- wherever we are- to Georgia. And yet, we’re still not near. I’m just-” you sighed, raking your hands through your hair. In the dim light, the grease was visible. “I think we’re out of time.”

“Y/N, they’ll be there,” Taehyung said. He didn’t know what else to say, frowning, “I thought you wanted to remain optimistic?”

“I do, but I can’t afford to hope to get to Georgia and find them there. And what?” you continued. Your voice had raised slightly, not enough to make Kyungmin or Namjoon ask questions, but enough to make Taehyung’s nose cringe at the increase. “We get there, and find them. Is anything gonna be the same? What if we get there and they’re gone and there’s no boats? What if we get there and something happens to any one of us? Tae, I can’t have that on me. I can’t have that on my conscience. Not again.”

Not again. “Yena wasn’t your fault, Y/N, you have to know that-”

“I don’t fancy being out on the road all night.” Namjoon stepped into view from around the front of the van, his hands shoved into the pockets of his distressed jeans. “Thinking we keep driving, turn in when it gets dark to the first place we see.”

“Isn’t that a little risky?” Taehyung asked, mentally making a note to continue your conversation later. “I mean, we have to really check the place before we head in.”

Namjoon frowned. “I know that. But, Kyungmin’s feeling kinda travel sick, and I don’t wanna overdo it, you know? Nights like back at the trailer park...I want more of them.”

Already moving to the back of the van, you pulled open the double doors and slipped inside, keeping them open in time for Kyungmin to crawl in after you. Her skin was a shade of ivory, whiter than earlier, as if the sickness had come suddenly like a simulation glitch. Wasn’t that what you were now? A glitch? An error in coding.

Namjoon shut the drivers door, groaning at the loud sound.

“Hey, man, you okay to drive?” Taehyung asked quietly, looking over from shotgun. “Look, if you’re tired, we can switch the orders around.”

Namjoon looked over weakly- “You’re sure?”

Taehyung unbuckled his seatbelt, dumping his jacket in the footwell with a sniff of stuffy air. “I’d prefer if you slept if you’re tired. ‘Specially when they’re in the back. Don’t wanna hurt them.”

He made a sort of grunt as a reply, switching seats with the younger. When he was sat in the passenger seat instead of the drivers, he let his head lull back onto the windowpane, feeling the chilly glass cool the back of his head. It was as if resting his head had added extra weight to his eyes.

“‘m gonna drive straight-ish,” Taehyung said with his tongue between his lips, backing up the van slowly and carefully. Namjoon opened his eyes slightly, squinting.

“Can you drive?”

Taehyung changed gears. “Yes.” 

If Namjoon noticed that Taehyung paused, he didn’t mention it. In-fact, he closed his eyes again with a shrug, a half wriggle, resting his forehead against the glass, pushing towards the cool touch.

Taehyung had been driving for hours, for sure.

The time in the van was unlikely to be reliable, reading 5:19pm when the sky was as black as squid ink, the dim street-lights that somehow worked- probably solar - beckoning the group forward. In honesty, Taehyung had no idea how long it had been since the gas station, just long enough to give him a crick in his neck, the back of his thighs numbed. All things considering, Taehyung thought he was getting better at driving.

He flinched slightly as the divider to the back came sliding down, and your face popped out slightly, peering out the front window with sleepy eyes. If he had a free hand, Taehyung would have wiped the sleep from the corner of your eye, and he turned back to the road, oddly afraid of crashing the car with all four of you inside. Like yourself, he didn’t want that on his conscience. Like yourself, he couldn’t have it on his conscience, not again.

“Are we stopping soon?” you asked quietly. Namjoon shifted, making it known he wasn’t sleeping. He groaned, grinding the heel of his palm into his eyes, unbothered when dust and dirt smudged on his skin when he pulled away. He could look worse, he thinks.

“Nearly,” Taehyung replied. “I don’t know where to go from here. Last road was blocked, so, I’m trying to get out of here.”

Namjoon shifted, cracking his shoulder loudly. “You tried any back-streets?”

Instantly, Taehyung thought of the woman earlier in his trip. The way she screamed at the car, scratching at the rusty paint job, her eyes bloodshot and her skin a lime colour. He gulped the hot lump in his throat, “I’d rather avoid them.”

“It’s safer,” Namjoon continued. “Out of the way-”

Somewhere outside of the van, there was a loud crash, similar to the way you sound when you drop something at midnight when your parents are sleeping. The volume was loud, louder than anticipated, and Taehyung unintentionally stalled the van. Kyungmin jeered forward, hitting the underneath of her chin on the seats opposite, sending out a string of foreign curses to Taehyung in the driver's seat. He avoided the stare of Namjoon, deciding he didn’t want to see the deathly glare.

“What the hell was that?” you asked, cradling a throbbing pain on the side of your face after catching it on the separation between front and back. “Is someone here?”

Namjoon stayed silent for a moment, staring darkly into the outside. Taehyung didn’t know what to do except wait, ready to jump into action when Namjoon made a noise of surprise- or was it shock?- and slapped Taehyung’s hand with great panic, “Fucking pull up somewhere. Turn off those fucking lights. Fuck, fuck, fuck-”

“Jesus,” Taehyung cursed, doing exactly that as you leaned back to switch off the lights, submerging Kyungmin into darkness as the blood pooled in her mouth from earlier. She groaned something between her lips, holding her chin with her left hand as she picked herself up to lean over into the front, staring out at what Namjoon was watching across the small street. With the van now in darkness, away from the streetlight, you were invisible.

It wasn’t hard, locating the source of Namjoon’s panic.

Across the street, a flood of artificial white engulfed the street, barely missing the pull-in that Taehyung had moved into moments earlier. Namjoon slouched out of instinct, keeping his eyes on the road as he noticed three people dashing out into the darkness, the explosive lights following them as if they were automatic. They probably were, turning on as they stepped further and further away from the door they ran from. As they hurried past the hidden van, another noise pulled away your attention.

A large garage door screamed as it opened, in desperate need of oil, chains clattering against the metal interior. The light suddenly changed to an eerie green, something you saw in documentaries about weed farms. As it slid further up into the building, Namjoon hitched a breath as the sight of three sets of human legs came into view, dressed in stunning ebony, large guns by their hips. One of them smoked a cigarette, the smoke rising up like old Native smoke-signals. The middle guy pulled up his mask, covering his nose and lower face, and loaded the large Heckler Koch HK MG4 MG 43, aiming it swiftly at the little piggies running away from the slaughterhouse.

Taehyung knew that gun- the Heckler Koch never missed a target. He barely flinched when the gunman hit the kneepits of the runners, sending them to the ground instantly, their bodies buckling under the loss of legs. The screams were loud. Mama has the bacon, now.

The other two gunmen laughed loudly, approaching the pigs and picking them up to drag them back into the garage, a trail of blood marking the concrete like paint. He said something, the main gunner, and the two spares were taken away, possibly to die, maybe to a waiting room where they would await their death, as casually as they would waiting for a doctor’s appointment. The last runner, a man who looked to be in his mid-thirties, with already greying hair at the top, was pulled to the side of the room where three more men emerged, a woman amongst the pack with her hair sprawled out to her elbows, in mermaid curls. She was gorgeous, nobody could argue against that, with her body in a glamorous dress, something too glamorous for the apocalypse. On her feet, heels that presented her perfectly painted toes, a peachy shade.

“What’s happening?” Kyungmin asked. It was rhetoric. Everybody knew the answer.

The woman dressed in glam approached the slumped body of the runner, crouching to cup his face and stroke a thumb across the bags under his eyes, bleeding out with veins a bright red, the red of a freshly picked apple, the red line under a spelling error. She closed her eyes and leaned forward, putting her thumb over his lips and kissing her nail, before retreating and nodding curtly at the men around her. It was a signal, for they picked up the runner and began to tear off his clothes, leaving him stark naked, covered in purple bruises, tiny flowers on his skin.

Taehyung had seen things like this before- he was no stranger to the way the men beat the man with clubs and their boots, laughing at the way he retreated into his own skin, recoiling at every kick and screaming with every sickening club, until he accepted the fact that his body was their plaything. He watched, in morbid wonder, as they dragged him by his swollen balls to the center of the room, where a sharpened hook hanging from a chain off the ceiling swung threateningly, a bone being wagged in the face of a dog. The man whimpered, his eyes hurting, only barely making out his destination before his body shook violently.

The man picked him up as if he was a sack of sugar, with one hand around his neck, promptly planting him on the hook as if it were a throne. Now Taehyung had to close his eyes.

It was curling upwards, sharply, scraping every wall and nerve and good spot that ached. Yet, the men watched with wonder and satisfaction, clapping when he thrashed like a fish out of water. His legs were immobile, moving inches and with every movement came a grunt of pain, flashed with panic and agony from his rather pointy throne, and then the passing pain of his arm being cracked upwards.

The crack was loud.

From behind him, Taehyung heard Kyungmin make a small wheeze, hurrying into the back of the van, where Taehyung watched you pick her head up off the seats, your thumbs in a pool of vomit around her mouth. You didn’t even care about the sick on her knees, or the smell in your nose. Namjoon looked through the slot, dragging the divider up before the sound of retching made him sick, too.

You stopped listening to the retching, quietly shushing each whimper as Taehyung slowly started the van back up, grateful that he was covered by the sound of someone screaming in fucking agony. It felt so wrong, to be thankful of a tortured man. Cock and all, Taehyung was thankful he was screaming. The tyres of the van slowly rolled along the road, in the shadows, at a sluggish pace. Namjoon wiped away a line of sweat on his forehead, unable to look away from the man, thrashing like a pig, hanging like a sack of meat in a slaughterhouse, blood pooling now at the corner of his mouth, his eyes, his nose, dried blood at his ears.

It felt shit to feel thankful of someone’s screaming. Mostly, Taehyung was happy it was them and not him.

I must admit I wanted Raymond to piss Donald more often, because the sex I got after that was amazing. It was in the delicious verge between passionate and rough, and I'd expressed my satisfaction to Don, he was more than happy to keep doing what he was doing, after all the both of us enjoyed ourselves when he got in bed.

After the scare with his brother he was told by Liz and Cooper that Raymond could be under attack, and he preferred to deal with it on his own for now. In the week after that Don and I staid at the hotels where I was going to snoop around, in the night we would hang out down in the restaurant or the lounge, then head upstairs to bother the other guests with my incessant moaning.

I was working non stop since the digging was done, my plan for the vault was to set in the the lowest part of the hotel, that way we could have more opportunities if it was reached, there could be a persuit and confrontation in the parking lot, but the ten floors of parking space were a definite advantage, since the way up could take a while, there could be time to cut the power in case the elevator was compromised, there could be time to set up a road block in the exit of the parking lot or the adjacent roads before the ones that connected to the city. Unless we got attacked by Danny Ocean, this was a good place for the vault.

I was scratching things off my to-do list for the day when I saw the date.

I had been keeping extensive track of myself since I stopped taking the pills, and I'd tried to not think about it too much. It had definitively worked, because now I was looking at the numbers in my agenda and how none of them were circled out like I did when I got my period.

I turned the pages around until I passed a week, then two, three, four, five. I stopped and then turned back to the page I was originally on.

Five weeks since my last period. I instantly felt my palms sweating and a million thoughts racing on my head, was this it? Was I? Should I take the tests now? Should I wait one more week? Do I tell Don? Or do I tell him when I know?

I stood up and nervously paced around the office in my house, rubbing my forehead with one hand.

Oh my God this was it, I had to take the test.

I was walking down the stairs but stopped halfway, and I guess Don got confused about my indecision of coming down or not he peaked his head around the kitchen frame and looked at me. Apparently I didn't look very good.

"Are you okay?" He asked walking around and get to where I was.

I didn't know what to do. I started to move my arms between me and him to somehow gesticulate what was going through my head, which was a lot.

"I..." I placed my hands on my hips, he walked up the stairs and stood one step below me, his eyes matching mine, I gave him a nervous laugh and shook my head "I'm freaking out"

"Noticed" he said with a little smile, placing his hands on my hips and pulling me closer. "Why, is it about work?"

"No" I shook my head dismissively "I have a delay" I finally whispered. He searched in my eyes for a bit, then I continued "you know, in my period" he lifted his eyebrows to me, finally getting it. "And you know I'm like-" I shook my head nervously "I don't know what to do, should I wait? Should I do the tests now? And I was debating whether or not to tell you like, would you want to just know or be with me with the test is being done? I dont-" I grunted in complain and threw my head back "Don help me" he chuckled and walked up the step to match me, then began walking up whilst holding me from the waist.

"Do you have tests here?"

"Yeah, I do"

"Well, let's take one, what do you have to lose?"

The both of us kept walking to the bedroom. I had a lot to lose, my sanity for one, if I wasn't pregnant I was going to be a wreck for the next few weeks, but I also couldn't afford waiting knowing that I was delayed, that would only make me more distracted and that couldn't happen.

I pulled out a bag from one of the drawers and took out the tests.

"Why would you buy five?" He asked looking at the boxes.

"Because there are false negatives so I wanted to do a lot of tests to make sure"

I began walking to the bathroom, Don was right behind me, in the front of the door after I opened it it I turned to him.

"I'm nervous"

He pushed me gently into the bathroom while leaning to kiss my forehead.

"When you do it you'll be more relaxed, come on" he encouraged.

I had to splash some water on my face before sitting in the toilet and doing the tests, I did the five that I had. There were all from different brands just to make sure.

When I exited I rubbed my forehead and left the door open.

"I'm a mess" I declared. He was sitting in the bed, he gave his watch a quick look.

"How long do we have to wait?"

"5 minutes" I walked and sat next to him, leaning my head on his shoulder. He moved to hug me and bring me closer to him, placing another kiss on my forehead. I waited for a while, just looking ahead. "How long's it been?"

"Like 39 seconds" I complained again and laid on the bed, pulling him by the arm and making him lay next to me on the bed, I mixed my legs with his and placing my head on his chest.

"What if I'm not?" I asked quietly, Don's hand had landed on my waist, and made it's way up my back and my ribs.

"Then we'll keep trying. It could take time"

I remained silent, because yes, he was right, but also I was very impatient in these matters, and this whole situation has reduced me into a whining complaining mess, and I usually wasn't like this. But this was a situation that I had never gone through, and from now on everything was new for me.

I didn't know some of the test gave up a little beep when the time had passed, but that definitively startled me and made me bolt from the bed. I was about to enter the bathroom, but turned around immediately and doubled back.

"Oh my God I can't look I'm going to cry-" I rubbed my eyes and jumped a little in my spot, Don gave me a chuckle, clearly amused at my freaked out state. "I can't look, you go and look" I pulled him by the arm and off the bed, when he stood up and pushed him to the bathroom and then walked away from it.

"What are they supposed to say?" He asked, I didn't know if he was messing with me or he was actually serious.

"It's like two lines in some and a plus sign in others" I said, I don't know how I had my hands holding each other and squeezing hard.

"Oh, then yeah" he answered from the bathroom. I stood frozen in the room, looking in the bathroom.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah".

Yeah, she was pregnant, I was going to be a dad.

From the bedroom, Maggie let out a scream that made me laugh, she came rushing to the bathroom and jumped on me, making me stumble back when I got her, luckily the wall caught us, her lips were on mine in a millisecond, her hands grabbed my neck and pulled me closer to her, she kissed me longingly, then pecked my lips a few times before wiggling off my arms.

"Oh my God!" She squeaked, taking one of the many tests above the counter and looking at them, then placed both her hands on her cheeks.

She looked at me again with such an excitement and a shine in her eyes, her cheeks were flushed red and she had the biggest smile on her face.

She jumped on my arms again and pecked my lips chanting I love you in between them, her excitement and happiness radiated from everywhere in her body.

She moved again to be put down but even with her feet on the floor she didn't let go of me, her lips were still sealed to mine for a few more seconds.

She pulled back slowly and took a deep breath, with one shoulder move she exhaled and gave me another smile.

"Okay, I'm calmed down now" she couldn't help but to look at the test again, her hands moving to her stomach. "We're having a baby" she whispered, then let out another squeal with a little laugh "okay, okay, I'm done freaking out"

"You can freak out all you want love" I pulled her for another embrace and kissed her forehead.

She hugged herself to my chest and laid her face on my shoulder. We stood hugging each other for a full minute, until I head her sniffing. She hugged me tightly when I began rubbing her back. I could only hold her and be here for her until she calmed down. It took her a while, but she finally pulled back from the embrace, her eyes and cheeks red.

"This was too intense" she said cleaning her cheeks, then chuckled "I'm like-" she began, then shook her head and shrugged "I'm light headed, definitively want some ice cream, will more than likely keep crying because this is the happiest I've been in my whole life"

She was looking at herself in the mirror while she talked, cleaning the tears that hadn't stopped falling on her cheeks, I could only look at her because she was somehow more beautiful, she was having my baby.

"Oh baby" she said looking at me, she ran her hand on my cheek and raised herself on her tips to kiss my lips. I didn't realized I'd also shed a tears out of excitement.

Her phone rang on the bed behind us, and turned around to look for it, when she took it she gave me a little apologetic look and answered.

"Yes hello?" She widened her eyes and bolted out of the room "yes, oh my God I totally forgot"

I followed her to her office because I still had a lot of questions about how to proceed with this.

"I was checking some dates and I got distracted" it took a few seconds of her tapping on the computer desk until she spoke again. "There, sent, they'll be there first thing tomorrow, you just have to sign the receipt and they'll start working. Okay, thank you"

She hung up and stood from her chair.

"So" I said walking in the office "what's next?"

"What's next" she said walking to me and rounding my neck with her arms "we should celebrate because I'm hungry" she declared with a little smile "and then, tomorrow I'm going to call the doctor to get a blood sample, and maybe an ultrasound? I don't know we'll see. It depends of how far along I am"

"Great" she gave me a fast kiss and walked around me to the door.

"I mean" I turned to see her turn around before leaving the room "if you want to go out, I don't think I can stop moving, I'm so excited"

I motioned at the door and walked to short way to her, holding her by the waist as we exited her office.

"Celebrations are in order" she clapped her hands happily and slipped from my embrace to go to the bedroom, she picked up her purse and put some shoes on, grabbing a coat before joining me downstairs.

We went out, we ate, we had desert, she didn't stop smiling once. She would look at me, smile, and lean in to kiss my lips.

She'd told me that it was usual protocol to not say anything yet, but I felt like I wanted everyone to know already. I almost broke the rule and said it when we visited her sister the following week, giving that Madison was giving us the 'you should travel before you have kids' spiel. Mags and I looked at each other when she wasn't looking and intertwined her hand with mine.

I don't know what was going on with Reddington, Liz didn't say much other than Reddington was under attack, he was being stripped from his money, his influence, his alliances, his power. I was having a blast with it, nothing could give me a bigger sentiment of satisfaction that knowing he was finally getting what he deserved.

All of this was until we found out that his cleaner had given the authorities 86 of his victims, that got me worried.

It wasn't just the bodies, it was the person assigned to the investigation, a former member of the Reddington task force. He was relentless, a genius, and I was scared, because I knew he would connect the dots perfectly. I was scared because I knew what that meant, and I was even more scared because it wasn't just the taskforce who was affected, it was Maggie, it was our baby.

"You are not listening are you?" I heard her say from the kitchen, I was absentmindedly looking through the Reven Wright case files I'd brought home, those were the only thing distracting me from the Reddington mess.

"I'm just-" I threw the file over the table and rubbed my eyes "I'm worried about a lot of things"

"Mmm" she walked to the table and set down a cup of tea next to her laptop. We were done with dinner and she had to keep working past bedtime, I'd brought my stuff down to join her because I wasn't getting much sleep these days anyway. "something you're allowed to talk about?"

I wasn't really allowed to talk about anything, but this affected the both of us.

"A few days ago Reddington's cleaner gave the authorities 86 of his victims, like a late Christmas gift. The guy ahead of the investigation is an old co-worker, who's a living nightmare, he'll put us all in jail if he finds out about anything related to the taskforce or the deal with Reddington"

She just made a twist of lips and turned to her computer.

"And Raymond can't help with that?"

"Help how?" She shrugged.

"I don't know, he would come up with something, he's very creative"

"Mags" I called her attention, she tore her eyes away from the computer and placed leaned her head on the palm of her hand. "I could go to jail"

"Yeah, I know" she shrugged again "I know that's the outcome of a lot of scenarios, I've known that for a while. And I'm still here, I still married you"

I made a twist of lips and crossed my arms.

"I should've backed out of this when I had the chance" I lamented after a few minutes of being quiet, Mags had resumed her work on the computer.

"Mm, maybe" she stood up from the chair and walked to me, she lifted her leg and moved it over my lap, sitting on it and facing me. "Hey, listen" she placed her hands on my neck "we know that the situation you're in with Raymond will get you in a lot of trouble, if not now, then someday. And I accept it, you know" she shrugged with a little smile that I didn't know what it meant "it's a shit situation, and it has affected you in so many ways, you've changed a lot, everyone has changed. And I'm not saying this jail thing is good but, maybe now everyone else in the taskforce will realize that some things aren't worth risking your lives for"

She was right, all the secrets, the lies, maybe if I was alone I wouldn't mind putting myself at risk for my job, but now I had people that worried about me.

"Listen" she patted my shoulders and stood up from her seat "Raymond is none too pleased with someone who's trying to take away his personal taskforce" she sat back down in her chair and looked at the screen. "you just have to lay the situation to him and tell him he has to do something."

"We already did, but he's in no position to help"

"Well, help him get on position"

Theres so much to say here i dont know how to go on about this with pretending i know what im talking about.... Musically the absolute best like there are groups with extremely good discographies under other labels but no other label can compete as a whole. Its entertaining how they go through collective phases and set the trend of the season for the rest of the industry like in 2009 it was alternative electro rock and around 2015 house electropop and so on and throughout the year all of groups' comebacks are fairly cohesive among each other not just the sister groups which is... so pleasant and unmatched. I dont know who coaches trainees vocally but theyre literally the backbone of the company they granted them their collective trademark singing technique with the subtle vibrato the breathy singing. Dancing coach.... not so much like do better (apart from nct who are all pretty solid dancers). They have some absolutely iconic soloists on top of all the group members we know and love. Other than the idols we know they have amazing artists signed like Kenzie is the real money maker every other sm hit song has her name on it idols go up to her say 2 words then she has the song ready no matter what they want like she wrote Stranger, Shift, All Day All Night, Sexuality, At Gwanghwamun, La Cha Ta, Red Flavour what is a genre of predilection? For the amazing always new concert performances especially shinee's taemin's and nct's on top of some iconic choreos like Replay love like oxygen lucifer hot summer rookie etc... you can thank miss Rino Nakasone. Like its not just the celebrities all the artists under sm are distinguished. I also like that theyre one of few companies who dont prohibit dating (actually i think theyre too enthusiastic to confirm their celebrities dating rumours but anyways) but i think something about the directors not changing for decades allows them to repeat the same mistakes over and over again. Like first you have Big Infinite Boy Group Super Never Ending wow.... you have the obsession with having a breakthrough in the chinese market so they keep taking in chinese trainees and debuting chinese subunits while being xenophobic and mistreating chinese artists and them eyeing china this much doesnt even make sense when they could be more invested in japan where people actually love their work.... how girl groups so blatantly get less attention and credit than boygroups... when they force these personas on performers who clearly dont want it..... inconsistent content output though personally i dont think its much of a problem (except for f(x) where it's just getting ridiculous) ..... giving even more opportunities to members that are already disproportionately more popular than their teammates instead of letting lesser known, very talented members shine like luna or taeil.... and on that note the promoting. I dont really understand this whole bit just yet but when you see less popular groups' mediocre passable at best comeback do better than an incredibly good sm comeback its so confusing. They have this whole thing where they will promote a group well in their first few years until they get a steady fanbase then leave them fend for themselves and its so frustrating like... arent you interested in reaching their maximum potential? Dont you want their fanbase to carry on exponentially growing instead of just barely? I dont understand. Like i see a song from a jyp or a yg group its unbearable its pollution you literally cannot listen to it and its everywhere you cant miss it and it does so well and an sm group or soloist comes out with a top notch all around work piece nowhere to be seen maybe twice in the following promotions... how can you allow this. On top of that from what ive seen their contracts are so ugly... sometimes they take some big risks like the sm the ballad or sm the performance units or more recently this super m hybrid group or when they bought mystic entertainment. When i say risk i mean it has the potential to be a success move!!! And it always is but they never push through with it.

Sm the ballad had 2 albums grand total and they all were amazing and did surprisingly good for albums full of just........Ballads and thats it we never heard of them again for over 5 years. They bought most of mystic's shares and didnt even merge. Like what are you doing. Do you want more success or do you not stop messing around. Im mad now

There are also a few multiple questions and I’ve mixed them up a bit so that the subjects keep changing. Many of them are open-ended, giving you the opportunity to be as verbose as you wish.  Please ignore any question you do not wish to answer.

Hi Lauren, my name is David Bentley, I write for a UK-based e-zine God is in the TV (GIITTV).

The objective of this interview, which will be published in GIITTV within a week of receiving your responses, is to introduce you to a new audience in the UK and abroad and to promote your forth on ming album.

Hi Lauren, thanks for joining us today. How are you?

I’m in a great mood today thanks. I had foot surgery last week and so I cant leave the house or really move for 6 weeks but I feel strangely calm about the whole thing, I dont mind bein

 

For the benefit of readers who may not be familiar with you, how would you describe yourself as an artist, in a paragraph?

 

 

You have released two singles, ‘Teenage Mascara’ and just now ‘Yes, Please’ from your second album, ‘Revel in the Drama’ which is scheduled for next April and the first one was well received by broadcasting ‘tastemakers’. How does the album differ from the first one, ‘Through the Night?’

 

The difference between Revel In The Drama and Through The Night is that this is a much more personal album. I spent the last couple of years honing my songwriting craft and these lyrics have come straight from my gothic salfordian brain. Its darker, more intense, stranger but still has the beauty of Through The Night. I think both albums sit nicely together.

 

 

Since 2015 you’ve been co-writing with Romeo Stodart of the Magic Numbers and he appeared on stage with you at your recent concerts. Will that relationship continue? Do you prefer to control the songwriting process yourself, or are you content to work with other music or lyric writer(s) into the future? If the latter, who has the final say?

I’ll keep writing with romeo till I die if he wants to. He’s the best of the best, and he understands me. I never really felt understood as an artist till I met him. I feel so comfortable in his presence that I let it allllll out, not just the versions of me t

 

You signed with Universal, a huge corporation, as a 17-year old. Is that too young, or are there any benefits in being ‘bloodied’ in the industry at such a tender age?

I think I was too young, although Universal were great that wasn’t the problem. But there was a lot going on behind the scenes that I was dealing with. I wasn’t a show biz kid from a showbiz family and I had real problems that seemed bigger than singing about about being dumped by some boy. I felt too young and overwhelmed but also too streetwise and smart for it all. It was a confusing time.

They say that everything happens for a reason. In 2011 you suffered a life-changing event, just as your debut album was about to be released, and one which set you back several years. Eight years on do you think the dreadful accident in which you broke your back has had any positive repercussions?

I think there had been positive repercussions,I dont think I would have started writing if it wasn’t for the accident. I dont

 

What attracted you to signing with Bella Union for your new album?

Well

 

Do you have any role models in the music business? A hero or heroine? Anyone you would enjoy being “mentioned in the same breath” with? (Dusty Springfield comes to mind, also perhaps Shirley Bassey).

 

I really admire Fiona apple because she does whatever the hell she wants. And her records are stunning, unique and completely un compromising.

You are compared occasionally with Elkie Brooks (I’ve done it myself!), a different kind of singer perhaps but a highly respected one who hails from the same city, and even the same suburb as you. And she’s still performing, in her seventies. Is there anything you feel you can learn from her and, indeed, are you ever in contact with her?

I dont know Elkie personally but I love her shes a legend. Rising Cost Of Love is my jam!

 

 

You left Salford and relocated to London a while ago. Do you miss it? How did the move impact on your creativity?

I really miss the north, everything about it but I needed to leave because I was really sad and I knew if i didnt do something soon I was going to slip down the back alleyof my mind and maybe disappear forever. I have memories on every street, bus stops make me emotional. Corner shops where me and my friend would try and get booze in our school, theres just memories everywhere and I needed a clean break. To create some distance so I could write about it

When you’re writing, how do most of your songs start life? A piano part? A chord? A melody? Does inspiration simply come, or do you have to seek it?

I feel inspired everyday by everything. When writing a song I like to visualise it, like a film, frame by frame. Sometimes I move around, dance, put on voices. Romeo will play something off the cuff that’s so beautiful that I’ll just start shouting and laughing and hugging him. Its the closest I get to spirituality. Writing wise, I want the narrative to have as much depth as possible, I want to feel something and I feel it is my duty to give the emotion and the stories the respect they deserve. I take it very seriously.

 

Do you see yourself as a live artist, or a recording artist, or both?

I see myself as both. I get to appease the introvert in me by being in the studio and attend to the outrovert by playing live.

 

How would you personally measure ‘success’? By ‘breaking’ America? Or something more modest?

Success to me would mean I get to create and perform music for all time and make a living on it. Success to me would mean that people are touched and moved by my music. I would love to be a voice to someone that can comfort them, just as say Rufus Wainwirght was to me when I was a depressed 14 year old. I’m not doing this just to stroke my own fragile ego, I genuinely want to reach o

 

When I saw your show at the Deaf Institute in Manchester recently, in one song (I think it was ‘Cruel Disguise’), you reached and sustained a note that convinced me and those in my company that you could probably tackle opera singing. Do you have any ambitions to perform in that or any other genre?

I would love to learn opera. I think

 

Back in 2012, while you were recovering, you performed several James Bond film theme tunes with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, including ‘You only live twice’ and ‘Nobody does it better’, both of which arguably could be applied to you. Do you picture yourself as a ‘Bond girl’ in the sense of recording the theme to a future movie, or do you even have any acting ambitions to actually play such a role? After all, the new album is constructed so that you can “revel in the drama of my life” as you say. (Incidentally, a female friend of mine – also from Salford – commented that you look like a 1950s Hollywood movie star).

I saw one of your Christmas Special shows at the Soup Kitchen in Manchester in 2015. During the show you told a story about how a school choirmaster prevented you joining a musical assembly on four occasions for no better reason than that there was something about you that he didn’t like. Your rejoinder to that was “Well, fuck him” and of course you soon went on to release demos on MySpace which were picked up by a local manager and sent on to Amy Winehouse’s producer. The rest is history. A new song, ‘Little Raven’ was written cathartically as one to your younger self when you had no label and didn’t know if it would ever be recorded. What advice would you give to young people who find doors being slammed in their face as that schoolmaster did to you?

If schoolmasters are singling you out and picking on you, its probably because your different and they cant stand

 

 

What touring plans do you have to support the release of the new album?

We are organising a tour right now around the UK, quite a big one its really exciting. I also cant wait to tour outside of England, I’ve never done that.

 

If you weren’t a musician what would you be? Do you ever aspire to being ‘something else’ entirely (model, politician, footballer, train driver…?!)

I think I’d try and be a fiction writer. I love books and stories and characters. I heard Donna Tartt say something life ‘as much fun as it is to read a book, writing one is one level deeper’ There’s something about losing myself into another world entirely that really appeals to me.

thoughts on ‘shame’

im putting this under a read more because really it’s just a stupid rant that i needed to get off my chest and it ended up becoming way too long and probably doesnt even make sense but here

okay so i wanna talk about how US is a HUGE ass country with 325 MILLION people compared to norway’s population of 5 million, italy’s 60 million, france’s 67 million, and germany’s 82 million. This means there are many different types of americans, not to mention the US is literally supposed to stand to be a melting pot of different cultures and ethniticies. There are soooo many regional differences in our country, north vs south vs west vs midwest vs coast vs inland and all of these places have their own customs and traditions and many laws vary state by state, creating different behaviors all around. If you do not live in america, you very well don’t have an accurate understanding of our country. Hell, we dont even have a good understanding of different states, all we have to go off are stereotypes and the things that we hear about. And that’s the same way we see many other countries that we have never travelled to. This same rule applies for looking into our country if you live elsewhere; theres a very good chance you only have a glamorized made-for-television and internet version of it, despite how much you think you know us.

The real essence of skam is supposed to showcase realistic portrayals of teenagers in our generation and the struggles that they face in high school. We love OG Skam because even though there were aspects that were strictly Norwegian that we did not understand, there were definitely relatable moments and we fell in love with the characters that we saw ourselves in. All of the adaptations seem to be doing well in terms of including their country’s attitudes and beliefs into the main story line. However, all of these adaptations have native people behind them. We have Julie.

Julie has stated so many times that Skam is for Norwegians only, and the main reason she signed on to do Shame is to give us our own show. While I respect that, I hope you can understand the speculation many of us have about how she will be able to accurately portray us and give us the essence of Skam that we love so much while being Norwegian. Im hearing a lot of stuff about how shes been interviewing local Austin residents about their lives which is awesome and I’m really excited to see how that plays out - BUT keep in mind that Austin, Texas is not representative of our whole country. There really isn’t one place that is, that’s the annoying bit, but there are a few cities that are average enough, and I would have expected a setting like Chicago or Atlanta. Now, I don’t know what kind of show Julie is trying to make. I dont know if she’s trying to represent the entire country or just the Texas or Southern area, but the rumors I’m hearing so far got me thinking it’s gonna turn out to be more like the second. So keep that in mind while you watch Shame cause uh horseback riding??? doesn’t happen everywhere. There’s some states that don’t even have enough grass for people to ride bikes in.

If Shame is going to have the same effect as Skam, showcasing the realities of the struggles that american teenagers go through, it needs to include more than what was addressed in Skam. All of those struggles (relationship issues, trying to fit in, bullying, eating disorders, pressures of sex, homophobia, mental illness, islamophobia) are things that we go through but we have other issues on top of those that are just as important. Our economy is shit, it is so fucking hard to get an education, and just as difficult- if not more- to get a job with that education. We are always politically divided and there’s hate everywhere you look. High schoolers have to worry about money at such a young age because they know they’re about to face crippling student debt in order to get a decent paying job or else they’ll be stuck making a minimum wage that isn’t even enough to live on. They have to see their parents working 2-3 jobs just to make ends meet, colleges are becoming harder and harder to get into and they continue to face the pressure to keep their grades up in hard ass AP classes while doing a billion different extra curriculars to help them stand out against other students. And there’s no way they even have time to have a proper childhood or social life when they’re stressed to the max cause they don’t even have time to sleep. I never ever see American high school shows talk about these things - what I do see is “how to get him to like me and not her” or “pregnant at 16″ or “prom’s coming up how am i going to do my promposal” and other bullshit like that. 

It’s so easy to make fun of our dumbass policies and the fact that a lot of you guys have free education and a leader who’s not a fucking airhead cheeto, but it’s literally our reality and we face the consequences for it and it is so DAMN difficult to get policies changed to make our lives easier because of the people in our government. I’ve been harboring these feelings toward shame for quite some time now, but I felt like posting today, March 24th, 2018, because right now there are millions of people walking the streets to fight for their right to live and not be shot to death during a regular school day in a regular school where they should always feel safe. 

Life in high school sucks for US teenagers, especially right now. Shame is gonna either be a hit or a miss, a hit because it will actually accurately portray what its really like, or a miss because it’ll give us yet another unrealisitic tv show that we really REALLY don’t want. I understand all the entertainment bit, no one wants to watch a show that only talks about sad stuff the whole time, but I really do hope she incorporates these issues in their lives somehow and actually talks about it. Cause at the end of the day, no matter how many interviews she does, she is a Norwegian adult making a show about American teenagers! Now, I’ll still be tuning in to see how it turns out, and I’m hoping for the best, because I truly do miss Skam and I’m excited for new content from Julie, but fuck if i wont be hella skeptical about it.

The Local Shooter Vs. B-LIFE

(LS) Hello thank you being apart of a great come up and welcome, may we get a small introduction for the people reading who don’t know who you are, where are you from? Who are you? And what do you do?

(B) I'm B-L1FE or B to most. I am an Indiana native but for the last 4 years I've been in the Houston, TX area. I do everything except make beats. I'm a recording artist myself, I engineer, DJ, design, visuals, animations, curate. To add to all that I'm also the CEO of my own record label, FAITH×VICTORY Records. I also am the CEO of three other companies: SupportArt which is a promotion company that also houses a collective, and MeditatedMerch which is my clothing line. There is stuff I'm missing I'm sure but I'm basically the one stop shop for good underground business.

(LS) Being a Texas native how do you feel that the music scene has impacted you and your creativeness?

(B) The scene in the H has never really impacted me much but surround regions have amazingly unique sounds that are almost nice accents to a style like mine that blends hip hop with metal and alt rock. The Dallas FT. Worth area is full of this new wave sound that people like Jah or $not really helped catapult. Then south Florida is known for the wild hype sounds they give us like Pouya. I think these regions influenced me by just kind of telling me hey its ight to let go and just be me. I used to be signed under a different stage name and to be honest it was all bullshit. All the rules and what they wanted me to be. This area in general just let the monster loose I guess you could say.

(LS) You also run a blog on your own called supportart where its a platform for many creative artist in the underground, how did that come about and how long have you been running it?

(B) We are gonna be two years old in June which is unreal. We house 20 artists at the moment including myself. It honestly all started as a group chat of artists trying to put together a collective mixtape. Most people didnt come through but it actually opened a networking portal that led us to our first client who was King Kap who at the time was signed to Quality Control. We continue to work with him to this day and alongside the leaders I make the calls with (Yung N ICy, Fat Daddy J, Psych Ward, Penny the Shabba, Waveon, wa55up, & Kaster) we just had the flood gates opened on us. Alot of trial and error but never once have we been exposed or finessed. We work hard for the underground and have new ways coming soon to showcase hidden talent.

(LS) you seem to be a jack of all trades with graphics, producing, and much more! What do you feel is your strongest creative outlet for you and why?

(B) All the other crafts came from being a recording artist. I think I truly shine there. Away from the art and visuals, I've had some pretty big accomplishments as the rapper B-L1FE. Sometimes I forget to push my own stuff when I'm so busy pushing the underground or my artists. In 2019 I dropped my first and sophomore album which did well. Underviews did an article naming me a young mogul. I made the underground freshman list which was amazing to be with the likes of GNAR, Lord Xan, 916frosty, and more. But if anything compares it's my graphic design. I've been doing design since I was 14 and I'm almost 28 now. I still have every graphic I've done and my portfolio now have close to 6000 pieces. It's the main reason I could leave the day job life behind.

(LS) You also happen to be on all major platforms with a couple single releases, where did you first find your passion for music? Also how did you know that it was going to be a career for you?

(B) My parents didnt really do much parenting but they did raise me around terrific music. I have right now I believe 83 songs on all major platforms which is quite a bit since my contract from the previous record label didnt expire until April of 2018. My parents raised me around Dr. Dre, Bone Thugs, Snoop, Nas, Destinys Child, Master P, and all the greats. So I had this around me so much at 12 I started writing structured songs and didnt even realize it. Football was passion #1 but when I decided to rescend my commitment to Eastern Michigan University, I started toying around with being in a band. After awhile my vocal cords suffered from pure metal music. So I turned to rap which was also like a hobby. Then once I began to network in around 2012 I noticed I had something alot of others didnt. So it was then I knew. The rest was waiting for the contract I signed stupidly to expire. My biggest influences would be Chronic 2001 by Dr. Dre and Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park.

(LS) Your most recent single regurgitate and there’s a single called “Welcome To Hell” which did amazing numbers on Twitter! What was the whole process behind those songs and why did you pick that specific song to shows case the project?

(B) The process behind these two singles were both random to be honest. I put out my second EP back in December and wanted to take my time on my third album so I do what I call SINGLE SZN. I drop a new song on major platforms every week. It started with my first single of 2020 which was 'Never' and 'Welcome to Hell' was the second. With that one it was Angry Orphan's concept (featured artist) and he sent me his parts and a rough idea and I thought since we both are lyrical artists let's do what Em and Royce do when they collab and take these same schemes but change our words and small parts of our flows. It made a very cohesive song. The marketing is always the same for me. I let people know way before something drops that it's coming. The main key is promoting stuff more than once. So many people drop a track, run it through some group chats for that day, and then leave it to die. You gotta keep pushing content towards people. With 'Regurgitate' I hadn't even planned a part of it. I woke up to an email from SupportArt's head engineer, Penny the Shabba, that two beats. One was the beat for that song. Wrote it in 15 mins recorded it mixed it, he mastered it while I did the cover, and within 4 or so hours a full song was ready and off to distrubution.

(LS) What’s a regular day in the life of B-LIFE? Do you wake up in the morning go to the studio? Do you wake up in the morning and start interviewing people and check on your blog? What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

(B) The minute I wake up I need a shower. Cant start the day right without it. My studio and everything is at home so I just go off my daily planner. I keep everything written down including my own personal stuff and I usually pick whatever project I really dont wanna do to start. That way I'm getting through the 'blah' jobs with full energy and the shit I'll enjoy doing I save for later when I'm drained. Usually first thing I do business wise is touch base with my team. We use telegram so we can avoid social media. We a family so they come first. Next is clients. Always touch base with any clients waiting still or people I may have had halfway to the payment phase.

(LS) juggling music, blogs, graphics, and also a clothing brand how do you know when to find time for each creative outlet? Do you set a certain schedule for certain things? Do you have a certain day for certain things how does that work for you?

(B) I wish I knew. Everyday is dedicated to everything. I didnt want to say okay Tuesday we design only covers and logos but sell 5 videos the night before that Tuesday. I ask my clients for deadlines and bundle clients I tell them the timeframes. To be honest my turnaround is so quick and I've done this for so long I do it super fast. Some AMV clients get their video back in an hour with their mind blown. I try not to look at it as such a big work load. Whenever I do feel overwhelmed then its time for like 30 mins on the xbox or a jog. Somehow I never run out of creativity which certainly helps.

(LS) What’s your main goal as far as music? Do you plan on getting signed, are you looking to stay independent? Is music even your full on passion or are you looking to stay more on the blog and manager/artist development side or what is your main goal?

(B) Main goal is to get my label signed how Travis Scott did with Cactus Jack. It keeps the artist safe and in it's own way allows you to stay independent but with proper funding. Music is the main passion. I never say I manage my artists. We push them to build their own brands and we help them with that. I'm simply just keeping a platform all about love. so theres been a lot going on in this smol head of mine.

I dont make this kinds of post regularly, just therapy isn't working out how I would like and im feeling like i can have somewhat clear thoughts right now so im gonna try and jot them down in the least tiring least confusing way possible. (using the 6 components of health as my guide) CW: eating disorder talk, trauma mention (no details), transphobia mention, gender talk, love talk.

Tbh, im gonna start looking for new therapist so if this comes out well ill just use this as an about me rn (because I can be different later)

Physical:

I feel fine, Im okay, trying to fix the damage my bulimia did to my body, I’ve seen a dentist, that had much less than desirable news given to me on that front (but things will be okay seeing as my school gives free dental care to its students). Bulimia is still its own hell hole but ill get to that in emotional health. Other than that, I still dont really eat on a tight or strict schedule and I dont actively exercise outside of my one physical fitness course which isn't much. Next.  

Spiritual: God, you there?

This isnt the time of my strongest faith, I dont pray everyday but pretty close but i do sometimes wonder if anyone hears me...I believe my life wont always be so tragic and difficult, theres no signs of it changing anytime soon but something is giving me hope and faith to keep pushing that things will get better and it’ll all be worth it, i guess thats god. It doesnt feel like much but its enough to keep me from considering not being alive so...thank god lol 😅. Next.

I love my friends, I hate myself, I dont really see my friends as much as I should Im really fighting to just exist at this point I dont feel like im the most fun to be around anymore but hopefully they’ll be understanding to my isolation and forgive me until I pull myself together. Emotional: (here comes the heavy stuff)

*deep inhale* Gender. well maybe i should say gender identity. It all feels so strange. I dont feel like anything, I dont feel any ties to being a “male” or “female” I feel like a person. I feel that Ive been going along with looks and expectations that society placed on me because I didnt feel there was really another option. Im comfortable with the clothes i own, most of them being feminine but im not big on super tight clothes, I kinda want to escape the possibility of being sexualized as much as possible. (it could be a trauma thing). Im going by They/them pronouns by those closest to me that are nonfamily members. It feels okay, I dont wanna make a big deal out of it I dont think I should Im the same person i've always been just no longer trying to meet “womanly” expectations, no more push up bras or underwire *amen!*  But I do think about being a cis woman, I think how much easier it would be to not have to define my identity myself and to just already have a rulebook to follow, as oppressing as it may be, which may connect to my next topic...

Eating disorders...so when I think of my body, I don't think of who I am or how I look now and how it could be okay as is, I only think of how I could look and the the easiest look I can perfect, which for me personally would be a something along the lines of a conventionally attractive woman, I think for me to do that I’d need to lose weight...(because of my anxiety i like to know what to do next to get the best/least problematic results) in times of stress or when i feel completely lost and directionless, even purposeless at times. I always go back to losing weight because to be like that woman I imagine I could be that would just be the next step for me to continue to fit the status quo of what society wants and then I feel like even if everything else is going badly at least im making progress in one area of my life and with that I can let out a sigh of relief. 

Last but definitely not least, drum roll please... *smol snare in background* Im in love! Its really the best. I don't know if i should @ him or not...but hes really just been the best most supportive and understanding boyfriend I would never even have the audacity to ask for. I really love him and I have to say things are looking really good for us. Hes trans, my mother is transphobic so thats a real stressor at times but whenever i spend time with him I just really remember that he's so worth her nonsense because if she ever takes the time to get to know him shed see he's just the type of person she’d want me to be with. No one is perfect, not him, not me, and definitely not my mother but we all deserve healthy love and relationships and i really get that from him which is “v fulfilling” and I hope I get to spend many more years with him. Also he puts up with EVERY aspect of me which isn't easy, he listens to me whine and complain and holds me when I cry and laughs with/at me laughing at my own jokes and does my laundry when I leave clothes with him and he lets me sleep late on the weekends and understands my need for mental health days. What a lovely boy 😊. Next

Im actually tired of writing but this should be simple. THE EARTH HAS HAD ENOUGH! I do what i can to take care of the spaces I occupy but I believe there will be another mass extinction and hopefully i'm not around to see it. The end.

My Timeline

Working retail. In a relationship that is mind numbing. Brand new at this and dont have much to report. Not even sure what to write here.

2012

Fighting feelings of guilt. He's finally been put behind bars. I think I may need counseling.

2013

Fired from job. On unemployment. Still in BS relationship. Not sure this timeline is panning out to be what I thought it would.

New a new start. Signed up for college classes. Dental Assisting. Not something I would have thought I would choose. Worth a try.

School is turning out to be fun. Trouble paying but dad is helping. Gave me a car to get into San Antonio. I can feel the stress subsiding. Step grandfather passed. No emotion for someone who was such a prick towards the end of his life.

Christmas was a disaster. So many snobby family members.

2014

Ok. I think I'm getting this timeline thing. Hard to not go back and change it though.

Enjoying school. Especially clinicals. Will start my hours soon the graduate.

Relationship is okay now that he stays gone all week. I think I hate him.

Hours in my clinicals are rough with no pay. Got a job at a little cafe about 20 hours a week. Love my boss and his wife.

Clinicals FINALLY done. Job searching time.

OMFG clinical hours do not count as experience therefore no experience equals no job. wtf.

FML still no fucking chances anywhere. Suicidal thoughts.

Mom flipped the fuck out as usual. Took the boyfriends side because she was wrong. Would have rather him have gone. Getting tired of both of them anyway.

2015

Finally got my foot in the door at an office. Found someone I can learn everything from. She's awesome. The doctor is a douche but I can deal. Besides what man isnt a douche?

Theres something wrong with this office. So many people being secretive and my office manager is a total bitch. A "mean girl".

Gotta stop reading over this everytime I come in here. I want to change it!

Ok my 6 months is up for experience, time to look for another office. My mentor flaked and left. On my own.

Put in 2 week notice only to have my pay raised and promoted to office manager. Do I really want to sit behind a desk instead of working on patients?

Still in dead end relationship. Still hate him. Suicidal thoughts.

2015

Still working in the same office for more pay. Found out why everyone is so secretive. Doctor is a mess. In debt up to his eyeballs, no longer getting paid on time, misappropriated funds on a regular basis, has no business sense what so ever, deals with shady people, I doubt his abilities due to MANY pissed off patients, holy shit, the list goes on. Back to the drawing board for a new job.

2 surgeries almost back to back. I'm falling apart. Suicidal thoughts.

Well fuck. Jobs are everywhere but pay is a bitch. Nothing matches it. Cant quit here if I cant sustain my living situation.

BS relationship has finally taken its toll. Verdict is in. I hate his guts. Tired of doing everything myself. Spends all his time on the computer chating with girls. What do I care? Maybe one of them will take him in. Why do I want to strangle him in his sleep?

2016

Got a new house but still not happy.

Tried out a new office but it's not the same. I think I got use to the chaos. Alot of blood sweat and tears have gone into that office. Went back.

Doctor has hired an overpriced nanny. This bitch is gonna drive me to drinking. I've been replaced. Good thing or bad thing?

Starting to understand my emotions. Realizing my family is the root of my issues in life. Now I'm becoming content with no contact. Just have to figure out this BS relationship.

On my birthday, I think I found my SM. Talking on a regular basis. And finally figured out what to do about BS relationship.

2017

Missed a bunch of time on this so I'm writing it in 2019 and trying to write as I would have in that time and frame of mind. Using things from other posts to help write this.

New home again but cant afford it without help. Took on roommate. She's awesome.

Lost car at Christmas and finding it hard to hold onto my job. Feeling depressed again. Suicidal thoughts.

Only thing I'm sure of are my feelings for SM. He's got me and now I'm scared of what I may do for him.

Job is suffering so transfer and begin walking to work.

Realizing the hold SM has on me and it's dangerous. Is it healthy to be this attached? Should I distance myself? HELL NO

Bought a new car. But now I need a new job and SM is leaving me to serve time.

Moved in with grandmother when SM goes into serve time. I'm slipping again. More depression and anxieties are back.

New job is overnights and not sleeping like I need to. I want him home! Job isnt going well from depression and 2 hospital visits for sleep deprivation and malnutrition. Job is too demanding and anger creeping up.

Transfer to different department hoping it helps but instead get hours cut.

Weekend drives to unit for visits that never seem to last long enough. Cant touch him like I need to, like i want to.

Dont want to do a fucking thing if he cant be with me. Cancelled on so many things with friends. Is this what my life has come to?

Searching for a new job. Wtf is wrong with this town. Part time only and everyone is short staffed.

Person I came with is expressing feelings towards me. Not feeling it.

Working 2 part time jobs so I can stop driving the amish but tired of the travel with one job.

Got a place in Romeo. Its decent but I've been ripped off. This asshole needs to be shot. Speaking of being shot. I'm being threatened and I have 2 gunshots in my house.

Rightful owner let me buy it from her. Ok I can do this. Now to do something about the asshole who ripped me off. The fucker lives right across the street.

Against my better judgement J moves in. I think I need protection. Bought a gun. Bad idea. J is a felon. He's not here alot but appearance is what matters. Wtf. I guess I'm back to using people again.

Turns out we make a good team. Accomplishing quite a bit to achieve my main goal. I still dont feel like he does but I'm getting shit done.

Bought a trailer house, 2 parcels of land, a boat, 2 cars and a camper trailer. Way to go!!!

What the hell did I just do? I just made things way more complicated and started something I have no intentions of finishing. Heart breaking again.

Divorce is final. 16 years and now back in contact with my son. Feeling complete.

Don't Fail Greta

Greta's speech to the UN has put a lot of public attention on the climate change crisis. It's trending on social media. Climate change deniers everywhere are making childish insults addressed at this wonderful young woman or they are otherwise deflecting.

Let's not fail her.

One common response I have heard over the years, one way of deflecting the issue is that a person can't affect it. That idea is wrong. We can affect it. The most straightforward way of affecting this - and one that many of the same people didn't do - is that we live in a democracy. Vote for policies that

will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Over the past period, I've taken a look at how to reduce my own footprint. I would like to share the information with you.

What can you do?

But beyond voting, what can you do? How can you reduce your own impact? Can we reduce our own impact by at least 50%?

Well, to take a look at that the very first thing we should ask ourselves is what is our own impact. This is a question I've asked myself over the last few weeks, and I think it is good for all of us to be aware of it.

Because it varies for everyone, we should decide what we are going to be talking about. It's easiest to relate to my own situation, which would be that of a one-person household and driving to work. I'm at the end of my twenties. That is the situation we'll base the numbers on.

Let's take a look at the larger factors:

Commute by car (around 12000 km yearly)

Food and drinks

Electricity and gas usage

Consumerism

Netflix! (and similar)

The individual CO2 factors: Travel by car

Let's take those factors and calculate the emissions (CO2 equivalent) that they generate. By realising what we contribute, we can see how we can reduce that contribution. Let's start with the car. First, we need to determine the kind of car. Because we will use an average 12000 km travelled yearly, the petrol version will be the financial decision most people take. However, cars are so different that we need to consider a few situations:

A simple car to drive to work with. One popular example is the Ford Ka (second generation), whose petrol version generates 119 g/km CO2. This would generate 1.428 metric tonnes of CO2.

A slightly larger 5 doors, the Volkswagen Polo. The emissions are at least 138 g/km CO2, which generates 1.656 metric tonnes of CO2.

A slightly older car, such as the Ford Focus (first generation).  At 158 g/km CO2, it generates 1.896 metric tonnes of CO2. 

Overall, a comfortable estimate would be 1.5 metric tonnes of CO2 due to travel by car. Car choice really matters as we see above. The cars above are all reasonably common, but not overly large. 

Switching to a 100 g/km CO2 car, like a Suzuki Alto or a Toyota Prius (which are not in the same price category at all) allows you reduce your footprint to 1.2 metric tonnes, a decrease of 0.3 metric tonnes. 

However, there's another trick. Eco-driving, the "new driving" allows you to save as much as 30% on both fuel (your wallet) and CO2 (the climate) (source 1, source 2, Wiki). 

I monitor my fuel usage when I'm driving, and noticed that I could use 20% less fuel on my commute. That should directly translate to 20% less CO2 exhaust! 

If we take both into account, the contribution from travel by car goes down to 0.96 metric tonnes, a reduction of 0.5 metric tonnes. As a last point to discuss, we have the cost of manufacturing. A CO2 emission of manufacturing a car can be anywhere from 5 to 35 metric tonnes of CO2.  As a result, we need to consider this cost. Most cars will be able to drive anywhere from 200 000 to 400 000 km in its lifetime. As we've seen, a greener car (100 g/km CO2) would produce around 20 to 40 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions in that lifetime. Does that measure up against the amount you'll be driving with it? The answer depends a lot on how much you'll drive it. Consider a choice between the Ford focus, at 1.896 metric tonnes of CO2 and a small car (Citroen C1) that comes in at 10 metric tonnes of manufacturing cost. It will take about 14 years (14 x 0.7 = 9.8) for that cost to be returned. However, at that point, the car is not at the end of its lifetime yet (14 * 12 000= 148 000)! The same calculation, however, for the Land Rover Discovery would be very different. At  35 metric tonnes, it would take 50 years to return that manufacturing cost - which is more than its lifetime! And that was assuming it has 100 g/km CO2 emission - it doesn't. My personal decision here is to do all of the above. I'm replacing my car with a lower emission profile (Toyota Yaris Hybrid at 80 g /km), I'm already using eco-driving and the car I'm buying is a second-hand (manufactured 2012 or 2013).  That would feature at 0.768 metric tonnes, which is a 50% difference even when compared to the lowest (Ford Ka) situation.

The best decision? Move closer to work. Don't drive as much. I'll be moving closer to work next year, which will greatly reduce the distance I travel by car. 

Individual CO2 factors: Food

The next factor, food and drinks, is a lot harder to consider. Diet choices matter ( a lot ). Let's take a look at a graph, but remember we can't take a singular source to be truth in this matter.

Diet carbon footprints.

I'm not going to tell you to stop being a Meat Lover. But would you consider eating beef less often? It's a good way to reduce your footprint (source: BBC):

Eating pork 1-2 times a week (0.14 metric tonnes), and beef 4-5 times a week (1.6 metric tonnes) for a total of 1.74 metric tonnes.

Eating pork 4-5 times a week (0.375 metric tonnes), and beef 1-2 times a week ( 0.6 metric tonnes) for a total of 0.9375 metric tonnes.

What about drinks?  Let's make a few lists. Because I can't honestly say how much a person drinks, I will just write down several scenarios again:

That saves you 0.8 metric tonnes. Food choice can make a big impact.

Individual CO2 factors: Drinks

1 Litre of coca-cola a day keeps the doctor away (but not the dentist).

A litre of cola comes in at around 200-250 g (diet is less).

A litre a day would be 365.25L a year, or 73 - 91  kg CO2 per year.

2 Litres of water per day (recommended dose)

A litre of (tap) water is approximately 1g CO2

A litre of (tap) water a day would be 0.365 kg CO2 per year. It's not much.

A pint of beer a day.

A pint of beer represents 300 - 900 g CO2. 

A pint a day would represent 109.575 - 328.725 kg CO2.

A bottle of wine every 4 days:

A bottle of wine would feature anywhere from 300 to 4500 g CO2. Let's take the lower one, 300 g CO2. (Source: Figure 3)

This would lead to 300 / 4 = 75 g CO2 daily, for a total of 27.394 kg CO2. Keep in mind that the whole lifecycle of the wine can contribute to that number being as much as 15x bigger.

Honestly, I expected the beer to do worse and apple juice to do better. Guess we should be drinking tap water more often! (if viable in your area).

Overall, the influence of drinks seem to be a far smaller contributing factor than food is!

Individual factors: Electricity and gas usage

So, let's start with finding the average use for our single-person household. I know where I can find the numbers for the Netherlands:

1800 kWh yearly

650 cubic metres of gas yearly

Electricity is easy to convert. A single kWh would contribute an average of 447 g CO2 in the EU, so the yearly contribution of electricity for a single person household is 0.8 metric tonnes of CO2 due to electricity usage.

Natural gas was harder to determine. For each million Btu of energy from natural gas, 117 pounds of CO2 are emitted. Which means that for 1 GJ, around 53 kg of CO2 is emitted. 

Finally, 650 cubic metres converts to  24 GJ ( 37 million joules per cubic metre). That's 1.272 metric tonnes of CO2 due to gas usage.

This, in turn, means that using less gas (i.e. less hot water, less heating) allows you to make a large impact.

Individual factors: Consumerism

Oh no, this communist leftist is going to tell us to stop buying new stuff! Well, not exactly. I'm just going to point out two things. I'll be using the iPhone as an example, but this will ring true for any gadget or appliance you buy.

First off, an older generation iPhone is going to be priced similarly as a secondhand to a newer generation budget phone. They should have similar performance. Consider the second hand, maybe?

An iPhone 6 has a lifetime carbon footprint of about 110 kg of CO2. Consider if this is worth it for a shiny new toy. Regardless, make it last. Having phones circulate on the second-hand market is good for the environment!

Again, phones were just an example. Some other examples we could consider:

TV screens

PC monitors

Nintendo Switches

Tablet devices

Laptops

Computer Parts

Headsets

Bicycles

Secondly, consider looking into the contribution of that new toy. Was it taken into account for the manufacturing process? How will it hold up - longer lifetimes are better? Does the manufacturer have a green profile?

I'm not a communist. I rather like capitalism, but monetary value is not the only value we should focus on. I honestly believe that we should focus also on values such as sustainability. It's worth spending money on (if you can spare it, that is).

Individual Factors: Netflix!

Netflix is just an example, but most of us depend on some services for our daily media fix. I can't put a CO2 value on Netflix, Youtube, WhatsApp or Instagram. I can only point out that there is a hidden CO2 cost for digital products as well.

To give you an example, video content is apparently generating as much CO2 as Spain does.

When considering signing up for a new service (I'm looking at you, Disney) it is also sensible to consider whether or not that company is open and clear about its decisions on sustainability. To give you an example, here's Google's sustainability page. In the interest of fairness, Here's Apple. 

Finally, here's Netflix.

Conclusion

In this post, we took a look at the contributing factors to our own carbon footprints. My personal surprise was the contribution of a meat-first diet, which is larger than the contribution of a car. 

We considered gains we can make, and identify simple ways to reduce your personal footprint by metric tonnes yearly. That's impressive.

If the western world alone does that, with its population of around 2 billion people, we can cut our footprint by a few metric gigatonnes. I know, it's only a few per cent of our total output. But we've also discussed placing an economic value on sustainability and voting for sustainability. 

We can contribute. How dare we not?
