Top Tarlos Scenes

This list is going to be very, very tough. It’s been fun to see everyone’s top 5!

1. 4x16 “And we’re soulmates.”

Literally never could I have predicted we’d get them canonically calling each other their soulmate. The entire week after it aired, I watched that scene probably every day. Numerous times. It’s soft, and loving, and a bit heartbreaking. And it puts so much perspective on earlier scenes. It’s just so beautiful and I cannot deal with it being real.

2. 4x18 The Vows

I have been burned by TV weddings before. Specifically by the vows. I’ve seen amazing vows and I’ve seen ones that could not have been done worse. So I was a bit scared we would fall into the latter. And we were blessed. Their vows were perfect. The emotions and the jokes and their expressions were perfect. It was all absolutely beautiful.

3. 3x04 “Hi Baby”/“Welcome home TK”

Am I cheating? Maybe. But these scenes aired back to back and so they’re basically one scene. I just have so many feelings and emotions surrounding both parts of this. The fact that the first time Carlos held TK’s hand again was to keep him from hurting himself. The fact that TK brought himself back from the brink to be with Carlos. The fact that he wakes up and calls him Baby first thing. Carlos getting to do all the things he’d mentioned earlier because TK reached out for him. And then he gets to take TK home and he moved him in even though moving sucks. These scenes are packed full of emotion. Relief followed by pure joy. And it’s amazing.

4. 3x18 The Proposal

Like, I was decently sure that was what was going to happen when the scene started and TK was watching Carlos sleep. And then he says “It’ll be easy because I’ll just leave everything to my husband.” The way he called Carlos his husband even before he asked. And as Carlos sits there buffering, TK is just smiling. He’s so sure. And considering we meet TK about to propose to someone else, someone who turns him down and then we get this, him so confident that the man he loves loves him back just as fiercely. His speech is so beautiful. And Carlos calling him Tyler! It’s all so perfect.

5. 3x13 “I love you.” “I know.”

This scene is so beautiful and important. After the whole episode watching Carlos try to figure out how he fit into TK’s recovery and feeling insecure about not being able to help him, it was absolutely amazing to watch him realize the best way to help him was to step aside and let him lean on someone who’d been there. He’s still taking care of TK with food because that’s what he does. Seeing TK so moved by it and the look he gives Carlos as he’s leaving, the fact that Ronen calls this the moment he knew. Carlos’s smile as he leaves. It’s all really, really wonderful.

getting older can be so amazing? you get more familiar with yourself. learn tips & tricks for troubleshooting your own brain. trial & error helps you build routines that minimize discomfort, maximize reward. your preferences/interests don't get set in stone, but you do find out which ones are going to stay with you in the long-term, and which ones are fun but transient joys to appreciate in the moment.

you learn that the world is so much more complex than you were taught, and that that's okay, and that there's an endless supply of things you can learn or watch or experience or think about if you want to. if you're lucky, you loosen up, stop putting so much pressure on yourself. if you're lucky, you learn to recognize that negative inner voice, and whack it with a baseball bat until it hushes up. if you're lucky, you learn to treat yourself gently, not because you are fragile but because you are worthy of gentleness. (i hope you are lucky.)

and some things will change. some things will get better. some things will get good. and maybe you start to recover from the dehumanizing stress of childhood/education. maybe you learn the power of your own autonomy. maybe you learn how to walk away from bad situations (which is a superpower even if you don't realize it yet). and you get to choose your own clothes. and your own food. and which relationships to pursue! and what you do with your free time. and with your life (but don't worry you get to choose that gradually). and that's crazy! and sometimes scary. and extraordinarily, indescribably precious.
