bro. did you know that they make bath tubs that self heat to the exact temp you want and can maintain that temp and even self-fill to just the right volume with just a button press. standard american bathtubs are Pathetic in comparison. whenever we finally get a permanent home I'm gonna demand a fancy japanese bath. (they're super common in manga, but that does not mean they are common in reality lol) (can't help you with the drowning part tho)

@theraphos I think the best analogy I've come up with so far is that they're basically a kind of digital Clever Hans?

Clever Hans, if you're not familiar, was a horse in Italy I think? Germany allegedly capable of (relatively simple) mathematics by stomping his hoof an equal number of time to the result. Now this was like a hundred years ago, and while the owner would insist to his death that Hans really did understand maths, actual tests done concluded that the horse's ability to get the right answer was entirely dependent on whether or not he could see the person asking.

Basically, what Hans did wasn't maths, but observing subtle signals in facial expressions and body language to determine when to stop stomping his hoof - definitely clever! Just a rather different sort of clever than his owner thought.

Now of course, LLMs don't sit and intently watch the humans they're interacting with for subtle physical cues to determine what's expected of them, but the immensely complicated statistical models they build out of their training data sets kind of serve the same purpose? Rather than observing human reactions in real time, they internalize a massive library of statistically mapped human interactions and build their responses out of those. And like the horse, it is clever - it's just not intelligence - at least not in the way they're trying to sell it. Not to mention the massive computational costs or the fact that a vast majority of examples of its use is just an attempt to repackage the commons (and anything else they could get their hands on) in order to sell it back to us at a premium.

My go-to example is still that of my my cat, and doors. Basically, you can train an LLM to identify doors in pictures - heck, you can train models far simpler than LLMs to identify doors, and likely do so far more accurately than my cat can. But - the thing that my cat can do that none of these learning models can do, and why I hold to my conclusion that the "AI" being paraded around is nothing more than stochastic parrots, is that when my cat recognises an object as a door... it also comes with the understanding that a door is something that can be opened - that there can be places behind the door, places that she might want to investigate. The act of recognising something as a door is more than just simple categorizing - it tells her something about the world around her, it changes the possibilities of what she can and cannot do in a way that directly alters how she goes about interacting with said world.

And the inability of "AI" to do any of that is, to me, the one biggest signifier that they simply do not understand... anything, really. They mimic language, sure, and mimic it extremely well at that, but they don't understand it - they fundamentally can not understand it, because they're not built to have agency, they're not built to have curiosity; they are the epitome of learning without understanding.

In a way it's kind of funny, because rather than creating anything resembling true AI, LLMs are effectively a realization of the Chinese Room thought experiment, which itself is a philosophical argument against the idea that programs can be capable of understanding.

And I mean... I disagree with the conclusions of the Chinese Room on a conceptual basis - I think if you wrote a program that perfectly mimics the brain of my cat, then that program would inevitably also mimic everything her brain does, including her understanding of doors, but also that is obviously not what LLMs are. It's basically silicon valley inventing the torment nexus, but instead of the torment nexus it's the famous example of an AI that cannot think, recreated in real life as an AI that cannot think.

It makes my head hurt.

thanks! tbh my partner just handed me a steak knife and let me go, I smoothed it out some by just kinda like, jamming a finger in there to mush down any particularly jagged parts. it was a small pumpkin which probably helped.

Gaiman, I think it was, said they unfortunately had to give up the other horsemen because there wasn't room for everything, and the other horsemen could be removed without changing the story. RIP those guys :(

Thearius [Th-air-e-us] is one of the hunters for my original story im starting work on, Venatio. I'm gonna ramble on about them some more under a "keep reading" that I hope will work right because rn im on mobile.

Thearius, or as she's known by friends, Thea [th-ee-uh], or by her family, Eari [air-ee], or by her many internet followers, Rius [ree-us]. Is a 19 year old new hunter for Venatio [Ven-nah-see-o]. Even before her debut Eari was pretty popular online due to her sassy and rude personality, her wild training livestreams, and the conspiracy theory about her being the secret child of semi-retired Venatio legends Therapho [Thuh-er-a-foe] and Aries. Not many people actually believe said theory, and Eari often jokes about it herself like its wild and out there... but its actually true, she is their kid.

Eari has shown amazing skill with his axe, and was quickly accepted to be a part of the new season of Venatio. Not only is he a skilled hunter, with years of training from three of the best players under his belt, he also has an oddly charming personality, something Venationes [Ven-nah-see-o-neighs] need to keep viewers interested.

Their overconfidence shines through with their outfit, both revealing and with bright neon colors, bad for defense and camouflage. They also specifically style their hair to show off their multi-colored eye, and are showing stomach to flex that cool scar they got from a respawn glitch during training with their sister once.

They're unapologetically themselves and thats what so many people love about them. Including me. But idk if I count because I'm the writer.

Ultimately, evil Sheogorath, as written in my recent short story (which you can find on my blog), is canon. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I have headcanons for the daedra as if he were nice. Many people do. But when it comes down to it, he’s really not very nice at all. Elder Scrolls Legends does an excellent job, in my opinion, showing this. I’m not saying he doesn’t care for his people, because the Shivering Isles expansion shows that, at the very least, he cares for their morale. But whether or not that’s because he actually likes them, or simply doesn’t want them switching sides to go to Jyggalag, there’s no real way to tell. I know some people will disagree with me, and it’s fine to have headcanons as if Sheogorath were a nice guy, but ultimately, I think he’s intended to be a cruel trickster.
